Wistar and Holtzman rats were fed (a) control diet ad libitum (controls); (b) restricted control diet (undernourished); and (c) low-protein diet ad libitum (malnourished), from weaning to 70 days of age. Mahalanobis D2 distances between cranial groups were assessed. Besides, differences among traits were assessed by the analysis of variance and Tukey test. The relative influence of each factor yielded a decreasing sequence: protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM)-Protein deficit (PD)-race-sex. However, this sequence differed between races. The significant sexual dimorphism in Wistar controls disappeared because of PCM and PD. Race and sex, race and nutrition, and race, sex, and nutrition interacted. Traits were classified into: (a) specific, (b) nonspecific, and (c) invariable. The specific race traits were alveolar length and foraminal width. The specific nutritional traits were neurocranial and splanchnocranial lengths and heights, alveolar and neurocranial widths, and the neuro-splanchnorcranial index (NSI) and the neurocranial vertico-transversal index (NVTI). There were no specific sexual traits. It was concluded that nutritional factors can modify a taxonomic distance in three different ways: (a) evoking morphological differences among populations of the same racial group, (b) altering differences among racial groups, and (c) modifying the pattern of sexual dimorphism of a population. It is suggested that craniological studies should take into account only the set of specific traits, disregarding both specific traits due to other factors and nonspecific ones.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to measure postnatal lengthening and widening of the hard palate by use of nerve canal openings as references. The relationship of the dentition to the greater palatine foramina was also investigated. Thirty-nine medieval dry skulls were examined, 22 from children and 17 from adults. All crania were photographed at a 1:1 scale. The dimensions of the maxilla and the location of the dentition were determined from the photographs. The study showed that palatal growth in length in the sagittal plane takes place anterior to the greater palatine foramen. The growth increment in the area between the incisive foramen and the transverse palatine suture is more pronounced than the growth increment in the area between the transverse palatine suture and the greater palatine foramen. The distance from the greater palatine foramina to the posterior margin of the palate did not increase significantly with age. The growth in width seems to continue into adult life. The first permanent molars and the surrounding bone are moved forwards in relation to the greater palatine foramina during growth. The space for the developing maxillary premolars and molars therefore has to be obtained by growth in the transverse palatine suture. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Quantities of food required by Sprague-Dawley rats during gestation and lactation and in the post-lactation period were examined. Rats allowed to eat ad libitum during pregnancy consumed quantities of food only slightly greater than the amount reported to be the average intake of pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats (20 g/day). Rats delivered their pups on day 22 or day 23 of the gestation period, but regardless of the day of delivery, the food intake of each rat decreased on day 21 of pregnancy and then decreased a second time on the day of parturition. During lactation, food consumption of the rats soon exceeded the amount reported as the average intake of lactating rats (30-35 g/day). Food intake was found to escalate from 12.2 +/- 3.1 g/rat on day 0 of lactation, the lowest intake in the study, to 94.4 +/- 23.7 g on day 21 of lactation. However, in the latter part of the lactation period, the intake represented the combined food intake of dams and pups. Eight days in the post-lactation period were required for food intake of dams to return to a level near that recorded at the beginning of pregnancy.  相似文献

小型哺乳动物能量代谢和脂肪累积的适应性调节是其应对自然环境变化的主要能量学策略,但在不同的生活史阶段,脂肪组织适应性调节的特征和能量机理尚不清楚。为探讨不同繁殖阶段能量代谢和脂肪累积的变化及其内分泌机理,本文测定了黑线仓鼠哺乳期和断乳后摄食量、脂肪重量,以及血清瘦素水平、下丘脑瘦素受体(Ob-Rb)和相关神经肽的基因表达。结果显示,哺乳高峰期黑线仓鼠的脂肪重量几乎降低至零,断乳后显著增加;与非繁殖对照组相比,皮下脂肪、肾周脂肪与腹腔脂肪重量分别增长了1.5倍、37.1倍和1.9倍。断乳后摄食量、血清瘦素水平显著高于非繁殖对照组,Ob-Rb基因表达显著下调,而促食与抑食神经肽的基因表达均未发生显著变化。哺育不同胎仔数的黑线仓鼠在断乳后能量摄入、静止代谢率、身体组分未出现显著差异。研究表明,在不同的繁殖阶段脂肪累积呈现显著的适应性调节,瘦素抵抗是断乳后脂肪累积补偿性增长的重要内分泌机制之一。这对迅速恢复脂肪累积,以应对将来的能量需求增加或者食物资源短缺的环境,进而提高自身的适合度具有重要意义。  相似文献

We radio-tracked fifteen reproductive females (5 pregnant, 5 lactating, 5 in post-lactation) of the Daubenton’s bat in summer 2005 in order to reveal the effect of reproductive state on their foraging and roosting activity. Spatial activity of females decreased from pregnancy to lactation and increased again in the post-lactation period. Overall time spent foraging did not differ among the three study periods. However, while pregnant and lactating females spent similar proportion of the night length foraging, females in the post-lactation period were foraging for shorter part of night. The frequency of nightly visits to roosts was highest during lactation but there was a trend towards shortening of particular visits during that period. All but one roost were in tree hollows excavated by woodpeckers in spatially restricted area of ca 0.7 km2. Tree cavities used during pregnancy were located higher on a tree trunk and had larger entrance area than the cavities used in the two later periods. Bats switched roosts every 2–3 days (range 1–8) and moved to a new roost up to 800 m apart. Pregnant females tended to switch roosts more frequently than females in the two later periods. We did not observe a significant effect of minimum nightly temperature on the activity of radio-tracked Daubenton’s bats. Therefore, we suggest that observed seasonal changes in the pattern of behaviour of Daubenton’s bat females were driven by their changing energetic demands rather than by some extrinsic factors (e.g. weather conditions).  相似文献

Changes in rat plasma composition in post-partum period were studied from day 1 to post weaning recovery situation (day 40). Urea levels showed a significant increase at the peak of lactation, and glycerol levels showed a decrease towards late lactation. Changes in the plasma aminogram were more marked during the maximal intensity of lactation (days 10-20) and in postlactation. Low trypthophan levels were sustained throughout the lactation period. The combined amino acids showed significant increases on day 10 of lactation, and increases in non-essential and total amino acids in post-lactation (40 days). These results point towards increased amino-acid utilization during lactation.  相似文献

The efficacy of central leptin therapy on weight homeostasis through various phases of reproduction, pregnancy outcome and postnatal, prepubertal and pubertal growth of offspring was assessed. Enhanced leptin transgene expression after a single intracerebroventricular injection of recombinant adeno-associated virus vector encoding the leptin gene (rAAV-lep) decreased calorie intake and weight in adult nulliparous female rats. rAAV-lep treated rats conceived normally, displayed unremarkable pregnancy rate, parturition and delivered normal sized litters. Significantly lower weight was maintained through gestation, lactation, and post-lactation periods. The maintenance of a modest weight reduction was accompanied by voluntarily reduced calorie intake, increased thermogenic energy expenditure, decreased adiposity as reflected by drastically reduced leptin levels, and suppressed insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels through lactation and post-lactation in rAAV-lep treated dams. The offspring at birth weighed significantly less than those of controls and this lower weight range was sustained during postnatal, prepubertal, pubertal and adult (3 months old) periods, contemporaneous with metabolic circulating hormones in the normal range. For the first time we show the persistent efficacy of central leptin gene therapy to suppress weight gain through all phases of reproduction, lactation and post-lactation in dams and reveal the potential imprinting link to producing lower weight in the F1 generation.  相似文献

Holtzman rats were subjected to food restriction during gestation or lactation, or both periods (overall stress). At weaning, male pup skulls were measured and female brains and cranial masticatory muscles were weighed and a neuromuscular index was calculated. It was found that gestational protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) without suckling restoration accounted for about 30% of the growth delay observed under overall stress. That effect disappeared after a normal suckling restoration. Under the same conditions of maternal food restriction in both periods, growth delay in the offspring was greater during lactation than gestation. As in lactation, craniofacial changes during gestational restriction were due to an adjustive response of bone growth to PCM. This response seemed to accrue from an altered relationship between the growth of the brain-less sensitive and highly restorable-and the growth of the masticatory muscles-more sensitive and less restorable. Some degree of delay in orthocephalization would be the skeletal outcome of such adjustive neuromuscular response.  相似文献

In many anthropoid primates, mating activity is not restricted to the ovarian cycle but also occurs during pregnancy. Although it has been suggested that the main function of this post-conception mating is to confuse paternity, studies showing whether or not male primates can distinguish between the fertile phase of the conception cycle (FPCC) and the period of peak post-conception mating (peak PCM) are almost non-existent. Here, we examine whether the pattern of female sexual traits (specific sexual behaviors, sexual swelling) and female attractiveness to males differ between FPCC and peak PCM in 6 wild female long-tailed macaques. We also use fecal hormone analysis to investigate whether female traits during peak PCM are related to changes in female sex hormones. All females exhibited a distinct period of heightened mating activity around days 45-60 of gestation. During peak PCM, swelling size and frequency of female solicitations (but not reaching back) were significantly correlated with changes in the estrogen to progestogen ratio. Swelling size, frequency of female sexual behaviors and copulations and proportion of male-initiated copulations and ejaculations were not significantly different between FPCC and peak PCM. Although males spent significantly less time consorting females during peak PCM, all (particularly low-ranking and non-resident males) invested heavily in terms of reproductive costs associated with mate-guarding and mating during pregnancy. We conclude that post-conception mating in wild long-tailed macaques is not merely a by-product of endocrine changes and devoid of adaptive function. Our results more strongly support the hypothesis that it may form part of a female reproductive strategy to confuse paternity, which appears to apply particularly to low-ranking and extra-group males.  相似文献

In mammals, reproduction, especially for females is energetically demanding. Therefore, during the reproductive period females could potentially adjust patterns of thermoregulation and foraging in concert to minimise the energetic constraints associated with pregnancy and lactation. We assessed the influence of pregnancy, lactation, and post-lactation on torpor use and foraging behaviour by female little brown bats, Myotis lucifugus. We measured thermoregulation by recording skin temperature and foraging by tracking bats which carried temperature-sensitive radio-tags. We found that individuals, regardless of reproductive condition, used torpor, but the patterns of torpor use varied significantly between reproductive (pregnant and lactating) females and post-lactating females. As we predicted, reproductive females entered torpor for shorter bouts than post-lactating females. Although all females used torpor frequently, pregnant females spent less time in torpor, and maintained higher skin temperatures than either lactating or post-lactating females. This result suggests that delayed offspring development which has been associated with torpor use during pregnancy, may pose a higher risk to an individual’s reproductive success than reduced milk production during lactation. Conversely, foraging behaviour of radio-tagged bats did not vary with reproductive condition, suggesting that even short, shallow bouts of torpor produce substantial energy savings, likely obviating the need to spend more time foraging. Our data clearly show that torpor use and reproduction are not mutually exclusive and that torpor use (no matter how short or shallow) is an important means of balancing the costs of reproduction for M. lucifugus.  相似文献

The mammary gland is subjected to major morphological and biochemical changes during the lactation cycle. It is therefore not surprising that this dynamic process is strictly controlled. The importance of the sex steroid hormones 17beta-estradiol and progesterone for normal development of the mammary gland was recognized several decades ago and has been unequivocally confirmed since. Furthermore, it is now also established that the influence of sex steroids is not restricted to mammogenesis, but that these hormones also control involution. Another important regulatory role is played by growth factors that have been shown to modulate survival (epidermal growth factor, amphiregulin, transforming growth factor alpha, insulin like growth factor, and tumor necrosis factor alpha) or apoptosis (tumor necrosis factor alpha, transforming growth factor beta) of mammary cells. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the influence of sex steroid hormones and/or growth factors on the development and function of the mammary gland remains largely unknown to date. Also scarce is information on the interaction between both groups of modulators. Nevertheless, based on the current indications compiled in this review, an important functional role for sex steroid hormones in the lactation cycle in co-operation with growth factors can be suggested.  相似文献

镰刀龙类化石主要分布于亚洲白垩纪地层 (RussellandDong ,1 993;Xuetal.,1 999a ;KirklandandWolfe ,2 0 0 1 )。最近发现于内蒙古上白垩统二连组的杨氏内蒙古龙(Neimongosaurusyangi)代表这一类群中较为原始的属种 (张晓虹等 ,2 0 0 1 )。通过研究产自同一化石地点的镰刀龙类新材料 ,我们鉴定出一个不同于杨氏内蒙古龙的新属种 ,美掌二连龙(Erliansaurusbellamanusgen .etsp .nov.)。依据以下特征将Erliansaurusbellamanus归入镰刀龙超科 :肩胛骨干远端狭窄、肱骨近端角状、肱骨有后转子、肱骨的尺骨髁和桡骨髁位于肱骨干前部、肠骨髋臼后支远端加厚、距骨髁小和腓骨近端后缘窄。Erliansaurusbellamanus的以下自近裔特征区别于其他镰刀龙类 :前部尾椎具加大的滋养孔、肱骨后转子嵴状、肱骨后转子内侧有一卵形凹陷、肠骨外侧面坐骨柄上方有一多皱的肿状突起、腓骨近端后缘明显高于前缘以及腓骨前转子大、位置靠远端。本文对镰刀龙类的系统关系进行了初步的分析 ,结论如下 :北票龙 (Beipiaosaurus)代表除Eshanosaurus外最原始的属种 ,它没有以下一些其他镰刀龙类的进步性状 :掌爪近端深、胫骨短于股骨、非常短的骨以及第一骨关连跗骨。Erliansaurus、Alxasaurus、Neimongosaurus和Nothronychus比Bei  相似文献

The effect of low protein diet on rat brain AChE activity has been studied during gestation, lactation and postweaning periods. There was decrease in enzyme activity of pups undernourished either during gestation and lactation or lactation alone, the decrease being maximum in 18-day-old pups. In postweaning rats, a significant decrease was observed after 2 and 4 weeks of undernutrition compared to the control. However, the effect of undernutrition was annuled by 2-week rehabilitation, thereby indicating that imposed undernutrition only delays the normal level of the enzyme. Moreover, it appears that the enzyme activity depends both on the nutritional status and the development age.  相似文献

Daily torpor can provide significant energy and water savings in bats during cold ambient temperatures and food scarcity. However, it may reduce rates of foetal and juvenile development. Therefore, reproductive females should optimize development by minimizing times in torpor. To test this hypothesis, the use of torpor by female and male free-ranging Daubenton’s bats (Myotis daubentonii) during reproduction (gestation, lactation, and post-lactation period) was investigated in 1998 and 1999. Temperature-sensitive radio transmitters were attached to the bats to measure skin temperature. Simultaneously, ambient temperature was recorded. While both sexes became torpid during daytime, male bats used daily torpor (>6°C below individual active temperature) significantly more often during reproductive period (mean: 78.4 % of day time in May and 43 % in June) than females. Female bats went into daily torpor, particularly in late summer when juveniles were weaned (mean: 66.6 % of daytime). Lowest skin temperatures occurred in a female bat with 21.0°C during post-lactation. Skin temperatures of male bats fluctuated from 16.8°C in torpor to 37.2°C during times of activity. There was a significant effect of reproductive period on skin temperature in females whereas mean ambient temperature had no significant effect. However, mean ambient temperature affected mean skin temperatures in males. Our findings indicate that female Daubenton’s bats adopt their thermoregulatory behaviour in particular to optimize the juvenile development.  相似文献

Prenatal sex ratio (through exposure to hormones from siblings in utero) can influence sexually dimorphic traits of many mammals; but research on viviparous reptiles has contrasting outcomes, which have yet to be resolved. The thermal environment experienced during gestation has a strong effect on the phenotype of reptiles, but whether this thermal effect overrides that of prenatal sex ratio has yet to be explored. We experimentally investigated whether the gestation temperature, or litter sex ratio, influences sexually dimorphic traits (head width and axilla-groin length) in a viviparous skink (Oligosoma maccanni). We found that gestation temperature had a significant influence on sexually dimorphic traits of neonates, and at 3 months of age still influenced head width. We found no evidence that traits in either sex were masculinized or feminized in response to litter sex ratio. The development of external sexual dimorphisms increased gradually (all thermal regimes pooled), with neonates showing no sexual dimorphism, 3-month-old juveniles showing some sexual dimorphism in head width, and adults having stronger, but incompletely separated, sexual dimorphism for both traits. We suggest that the overlap in sexually dimorphic traits of adult O. maccanni (and perhaps other reptiles) may be better explained by natural variation in temperatures experienced during embryonic development, rather than hormonal effects arising from litter sex ratio. The interaction of hormones and temperature during gestation and the effect of these factors on sexual dimorphism within reptiles deserve further exploration.  相似文献

Captive wapiti hinds were observed during seven periods between June 1996 and November 1997. We investigated their activity and foraging behaviour on two pastures, heavily and lightly grazed, during four phases of the reproductive cycle (early gestation, late gestation, peak lactation, and late lactation). Within season, differences in forage availability between pastures had little apparent effect on wapiti feeding behaviour (p0.05). However, within each pasture, hinds tended to select locations of higher phytomass than the pasture average. Among seasons, effects of forage availability on feeding behaviour were pronounced. Hinds grazed longest in late lactation (12.8 h/day), when they spent 94% of their active time foraging, whereas during early gestation they foraged fewer hours (8.2 h/day) and less intensively (66% of active time). The longest foraging bouts also occurred in late lactation (100 min) and decreased linearly as the number of bouts per day increased (R(2)=0.88). The annual peak bite rate (BR) was in late lactation (62 bites/min), whereas the annual nadir occurred in early gestation (37 bites/min). Smallest bite sizes (BS) (mg) were recorded in late gestation (127 mg), and increased linearly with forage availability (R(2)=0.46), with largest BS occurring during peak lactation (280 mg). This study demonstrated how seasonal modifications in activity and foraging behaviour enabled gestating and lactating wapiti hinds to satisfy their changing nutritional requirements on seasonal pastures. Knowledge of behavioural compensation in response to nutritional demand and pasture conditions will be useful in designing supplementation program for farmed wapiti.  相似文献

The solum nasi of Microcebus murinus is characterized by the presence of a zona annularis, continuity between the anterior transverse lamina and the paraseptal cartilage, a continuous paraseptal cartilage, a palatine cartilage and a posterior transverse lamina. It lacks a fibula reuniens and possibly a cartilage of the nasopalatine duct as well as a palatine papillary cartilage. The morphology in M. murinus closely resembles that seen in Tupaia and Galago. This affinity results from the retention of primitive traits. However, Galago is reported to lack a zona annularis, thus displaying a specialization not shared with M. murinus. Therefore, the zona annularis provides a useful trait for distinguishing between the ontogenies of M. murinus and Galago.  相似文献

Organisms in the wild are constantly faced with a wide range of environmental variability, such as fluctuation in food availability. Poor nutritional conditions influence life-histories via individual resource allocation patterns, and trade-offs between competing traits. In this study, we assessed the influence of food restriction during development on the energetically expensive traits flight metabolic rate (proxy of dispersal ability), encapsulation rate (proxy of immune defence), and lifespan using the Glanville fritillary butterfly, Melitaea cinxia, as a model organism. Additionally, we examined the direct costs of flight on individual immune function, and whether those costs increase under restricted environmental conditions. We found that nutritional restriction during development enhanced adult encapsulations rate, but reduced both resting and flight metabolic rates. However, at the individual level metabolic rates were not associated with encapsulation rate. Interestingly, individuals that were forced to fly prior to the immune assays had higher encapsulation rates than individuals that had not flown, suggesting that flying itself enhances immune response. Finally, in the control group encapsulation rate correlated positively with lifespan, whereas in the nutritional restriction group there was no relationship between these traits, suggesting that the association between encapsulation rate on adult lifespan was condition-dependent. Thus stressful events during both larval development (food limitation) and adulthood (forced flight) induce increased immune response in the adult butterflies, which may allow individuals to cope with stressful events later on in life.  相似文献

As a result of the genetic selection for prolificacy and the improvements in the environment and farms management, litter size has increased in the last few years so that energy requirements of the lactating sow are greater. In addition, selection for feed efficiency of growing pigs is also conducted in maternal lines, and this has led to a decrease in appetite and feed intake that is extended to the lactation period, so the females are not able to obtain the necessary energy and nutrients for milk production and they mobilize their energetic reserves. When this mobilization is excessive, reproductive and health problems occur which ends up in an early sow culling. In this context, it has been suggested to improve feed efficiency at lactation through genetic selection. The aim of this study is to know, in a Duroc population, the genetic determinism of sow feed efficiency during lactation and traits involved in its definition, as well as genetic and environmental associations between them. The studied traits are daily lactation feed intake (dLFI), daily sow weight balance (dSWB), backfat thickness balance (BFTB), daily litter weight gain (dLWG), sow residual feed intake (RFI) and sow restricted residual feed intake (RRFI) during lactation. Data corresponded to 851 parities from 581 Duroc sows. A Bayesian analysis was performed using Gibbs sampling. A four-trait repeatability animal model was implemented including the systematic factors of batch and parity order, the standardized covariates of sow weight (SWf) and litter weight (LWs) at farrowing for all traits and lactation length for BFTB. The posterior mean (posterior SD) of heritabilities were: 0.09 (0.03) for dLFI, 0.37 (0.07) for dSWB, 0.09 (0.03) for BFTB, 0.22 (0.05) for dLWG, 0.04 (0.02) for RFI and null for RRFI. The genetic correlation between dLFI and dSWB was high and positive (0.74 (0.11)) and null between dLFI and BFTB. Genetic correlation was favourable between RFI and dLFI and BFTB (0.71 (0.16) and −0.69 (0.18)), respectively. The other genetic correlations were not statistically different from zero. The phenotypic correlations were low and positive between dLFI and dSWB (0.27 (0.03), dSWB and BFTB (0.25 (0.04)), and between dLFI and dLWG (0.16 (0.03)). Therefore, in the population under study, the improvement of the lactation feed efficiency would be possible either using RFI, which would not have unfavourable correlated effects, or through an index including its component traits.  相似文献
