The wide-ranging, cumulative, negative effects of anthropogenic disturbance, including habitat degradation, exotic species, and hunting, on native wildlife has been well documented across a range of habitats worldwide with carnivores potentially being the most vulnerable due to their more extinction prone characteristics. Investigating the effects of anthropogenic pressures on sympatric carnivores is needed to improve our ability to develop targeted, effective management plans for carnivore conservation worldwide. Utilizing photographic, line-transect, and habitat sampling, as well as landscape analyses and village-based bushmeat hunting surveys, we provide the first investigation of how multiple forms of habitat degradation (fragmentation, exotic carnivores, human encroachment, and hunting) affect carnivore occupancy across Madagascar’s largest protected area: the Masoala-Makira landscape. We found that as degradation increased, native carnivore occupancy and encounter rates decreased while exotic carnivore occupancy and encounter rates increased. Feral cats (Felis species) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) had higher occupancy than half of the native carnivore species across Madagascar’s largest protected landscape. Bird and small mammal encounter rates were negatively associated with exotic carnivore occupancy, but positively associated with the occupancy of four native carnivore species. Spotted fanaloka (Fossa fossana) occupancy was constrained by the presence of exotic feral cats and exotic small Indian civet (Viverricula indica). Hunting was intense across the four study sites where hunting was studied, with the highest rates for the small Indian civet (x¯ = 90 individuals consumed/year), the ring-tailed vontsira (Galidia elegans) (x¯ = 58 consumed/year), and the fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) (x¯ = 31 consumed/year). Our modeling results suggest hunters target intact forest where carnivore occupancy, abundance, and species richness, are highest. These various anthropogenic pressures and their effects on carnivore populations, especially increases in exotic carnivores and hunting, have wide-ranging, global implications and demand effective management plans to target the influx of exotic carnivores and unsustainable hunting that is affecting carnivore populations across Madagascar and worldwide.  相似文献

α-(1→2)-L=-Fucosidase, β-D=-galactosidase and galactose oxidase are sterically hindered by certain types of branching in the oligosaccharide chains. 1) β-D=-Galactosidase will not cleave galactose when the penultimate sugar carries a sialic acid residue as in I. 2) Galactose Oxidase will not oxidize the galactose residue in trisaccharide I but will in II. Moreover, neither galactose nor N-acetylgalactosamine, glycosidically bound as in III, is susceptible to oxidation with galactose oxidase until the α-(1→2) linkage between them is cleaved by α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase. 3) α-(1→2)-L=-Fucosidase action is inhibited by α-(1→3)-N-acetylgalactosaminyl or galactosyl residue, as in III and IV. Removal of the terminal sugars makes the fucosyl residue susceptible to fucosidase action.

The origin of mammalian telocentric chromosomes is considered under the classical (fusion) and fission hypotheses using both theoretical analyses of the mechanisms proposed under the two hypotheses, and the published chromosomal data for 723 mammal species. Telocentrics are defined on the basis of short arm size (Sw) as chromosomes with Sw < 0·1(Imai, 1976). The fusion hypothesis lacks adequate models for producing these telocentrics, but their origin is readily understood under the fission hypothesis. Based on these analyses, I propose a cyclical model of chromosome change, symbolized:
in which T, A, and M are, respectively, telocentric, acrocentric, and meta-, submeta- and subtelocentric chromosomes. The chief elements of this model are centric fission (M → T + T), tandem growth of constitutive heterochromatin (T → A), and pericentric inversion (A → M). Under this model, therefore, mammalian karyotypes have an overall tendency, with occasional reversals, to evolve higher numbers of both chromosomes and chromosome arms.  相似文献

A reversed-phase, ion-pair liquid chromatographic method for the quantitative determination of quaternary acetylcholinesterase inhibitors is described. The method uses an ion-pair extraction to isolate the drugs from biological material prior to liquid chromatographic separation and online UV detection at 214 nm. Quantitation down to 5 ng/ml and within-day precision with coefficient of variation (C.V.) of 1.5% (n=10, x = 100 ng/ml) for neostigmine, C.V., 1.7% (n=10, x = 80 ng/ml) for pyridostigmine and C.V., 1.5% (n=10, x = 100 ng/ml) for edrophonium have been achieved. The assay was designed for pharmacokinetic studies of these drugs in anesthetized patients.  相似文献

For any non-negative G, time lag in these terms can not destabilize the equilibrium point in the case ? = 1. For a particular class of functions G one can obtain some insight into the consequences of time lag by relating the model to that with a longer loop of reactions. Purpose

Today's orthotics should be designed to apply the external orthosis moment to the knee joint solely during the stance phase instead of the entire gait cycle. The aim of this study was to validate the reliability of a simple device for measuring forces at the leg–orthosis interface and describe the behavior of an innovating dynamic unloader knee brace built to interrupt its mechanical action during large knee flexion (swing phase of gait).

Methods

A compression testing machine was used to apply known (standard) forces to the device (modeled forces) and the results were compared.

Results

The low absolute mean bias (4%), the narrow agreement limits associated with the Bland and Altman analysis as well as the significant linear correlation (r=0.99; p<0.001) validate the agreement between standard and modeled forces. Likewise, the low standard error of measurement between trials (1.3%) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (1.00) reflect high test-retest reliability.

Conclusion

These results demonstrate the validity of the proposed device for measuring constraints induced by the dynamic unloader knee brace. An example of an application is provided through an orthosis moment calculation using kinematic data, which reveal a changeable mechanical action, necessary to improve comfort resulting in potentially better compliance.  相似文献
