Chthamalus montagui and Chthamalus stellatus are abundant barnacles in western Europe. Tidal settlement of Chthamalus in SW Ireland and SW Portugal was studied in relation to a night and day factor and at different temporal (dates) and spatial (shores and sites) scales. Based on the identifiable cyprids and metamorphs, Chthamalus settlement in SW Ireland was comprised mainly of C. stellatus but was composed of C. montagui only in SW Portugal. In SW Ireland and SW Portugal, settlement rates of Chthamalus (mean number of settlers per 25 cm2±S.E.) were higher after one day tidal cycle (597±158.7 in SW Ireland, 144±23.6 in SW Portugal) than one night tidal cycle (55±12.1 in SW Ireland, 13±2.2 in SW Portugal), but significant differences were only detected in SW Portugal. Different models were proposed for explaining this pattern related to night and day variability of the physical processes responsible for transporting cyprids to shore (1), and/or of pre-settlement behaviour (2) and/or of settlement behaviour of cyprids (3).Spatial patterns of tidal settlement of both species or at both locations seem similar with small scale variability (between sites, 5 to 30 m apart) in settlement of Chthamalus being the only spatial scale at which variability was detected in both locations. The composition of Chthamalus cohorts settling during one tidal cycle differed considerably between locations/species: settlers of C. stellatus were mainly cyprids; settlers of C. montagui during the day (when most settlement occurred) were essentially metamorphs.  相似文献

We have conducted a preliminary study of tidal and diurnal variations in the distribution of dominant larval and juvenile fishes in the Chikugo River inlet (Ariake Bay, Kyushu, Japan) to determine whether selective tidal stream transport (STST) occurs. Larval and juvenile fish were collected from the mesohaline zone of the Chikugo River inlet during spring 2002. Temperature, salinity, depth, and current velocity were measured. Larval and juvenile abundance were compared among four tidal conditions, flooding tide, high tide, ebbing tide, and low tide, and between day and night. A total of 12 families, 15 species, and 5,577 individuals were collected. Temperature did not vary significantly with tidal conditions whereas salinity, depth, and current velocity varied significantly. Salinity also was correlated significantly and positively with depth. The abundance of most of the fishes was correlated positively and significantly with salinity and depth. Lateolabrax japonicus, Trachidermus fasciatus, Acanthogobius hasta, and other gobiid larvae (Gobiidae spp.) were significantly more abundant during high tide; in contrast, Coilia nasus and Neosalanx reganius were most abundant during low tide. The abundance of most of the fishes was higher during high tides at night than during the day, indicating the existence of STST, which may be strategically associated with ascending progress to upstream nursery areas.  相似文献

The American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus (Linnaeus), typically inhabits estuaries and coastal areas with pronounced semi-diurnal and diurnal tides that are used to synchronize the timing of spawning, larval hatching, and emergence. Horseshoe crabs spawn in the intertidal zone of sandy beaches and larval emergence occurs when the larvae exit the sediments and enter the plankton. However, L. polyphemus populations also occur in areas that lack significant tidal changes and associated synchronization cues. Endogenous activity rhythms that match predictable environmental cycles may enable larval horseshoe crabs to time swimming activity to prevent stranding on the beach. To determine if L. polyphemus larvae possess a circatidal rhythm in vertical swimming, larvae collected from beach nests and the plankton were placed under constant conditions and their activity monitored for 72 h. Time-series analyses of the activity records revealed a circatidal rhythm with a free-running period of ≈ 12.5 h. Maximum swimming activity consistently occurred during the time of expected falling tides, which may serve to reduce the chance of larvae being stranded on the beach and aid in seaward transport by ebb currents (i.e., ebb-tide transport). To determine if agitation serves as the entrainment cue, larvae were shaken on a 12.4 h cycle to simulate conditions during high tide in areas with semi-diurnal tides. When placed under constant conditions, larval swimming increased near the expected times of agitation. Thus, endogenous rhythms of swimming activity of L. polyphemus larvae in both tidal and nontidal systems may help synchronize swimming activity with periods of high water and inundation.  相似文献

Marine sediments can contain B vitamins, presumably incorporated from settled, decaying phytoplankton and microorganisms associated with decomposition. Because B vitamins may be advantageous for the energetically intensive processes of metamorphosis, post-metamorphic growth, and reproduction, we tested several B vitamins to determine if they would stimulate larvae of the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella teleta to settle and metamorphose. Nicotinamide and riboflavin individually stimulated larvae of C. teleta to settle and metamorphose, generally within 1–2 hours at nicotinamide concentrations as low as 3 µM and riboflavin concentrations as low as 50 µM. More than 80% of the larvae metamorphosed within 30 minutes at a nicotinamide concentration of 7 µM. The pyridine channel agonist pyrazinecarboxamide also stimulated metamorphosis at very low concentrations. In contrast, neither lumichrome, thiamine HCl, pyridoxine HCl, nor vitamin B12 stimulated larvae of C. teleta to metamorphose at concentrations as high as 500 µM. Larvae also did not metamorphose in response to either nicotinamide or pyrazinecarboxamide in calcium-free seawater or with the addition of 4-acetylpyridine, a competitive inhibitor of the pyridine receptor. Together, these results suggest that larvae of C. teleta are responding to nicotinamide and riboflavin via a chemosensory pyridine receptor similar to that previously reported to be present on crayfish chela and involved with food recognition. Our data are the first to implicate B vitamins as possible natural chemical settlement cues for marine invertebrate larvae.  相似文献

A study has been made of the processes of extra- and intracellular digestion in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) over two 24-h cycles in winter and summer. The results show that the digestive processes are discontinuous and related to the tidal cycle. Variations in tidal height resulting from a diurnal inequality of the tide affect both the relative dissolution of the crystalline style and the relative lengths of the constituent phases of the intracellular digestive process in the digestive diverticula. On a seasonal basis the style is present for a greater length of time in winter and, conversely, remains dissolved longer in summer. A seasonal variation in the structure of the digestive tubules has also been found. The results confirm conclusions reached earlier that the processes of extracellular digestion in the stomach and intracellular digestion in the digestive diverticula of intertidal bivalves are both discontinuous, alternate, and irrevocably interrelated since breakdown of the digestive cells of the digestive diverticula following intracellular digestion results in the dissolution of the crystalline style. The arrival of food in the stomach has a minimal effect upon the style. Moreover, the cytological structure of the digestive diverticula of C. gigas undergoes a series of synchronized changes related to the tidal cycle.  相似文献

The mudprawn, Upogebia africana is common in intertidal regions of many South African estuaries. The life cycle is complex, incorporating a marine phase of development during the larval stages. Breeding peaks are in summer and first-stage larvae are released into the plankton at night. Maximum release activity and export to the marine environment follow a semi-lunar cycle synchronized to the time when high water in the estuary is crepuscular. This occurs after peak spring tidal amplitude. Estuarine reinvasion by postlarvae is also nocturnal, and maximum return occurs after neap's when low water at sea occurs around sunset. Rhythmic cycles of larval export and postlarval estuarine reinvasion are therefore asynchronous during the lunar cycle and are best explained by the timing of the change in light intensity relative to high and low water respectively. If maximum activity rhythms of Stage 1 and postlarvae are independent of tidal amplitude, then timing of maximum release and reinvasion during the lunar cycle would alter as the time of sunset shifts between solstices. Much of southern Africa experiences a semi-arid type climate and most estuaries close off from the sea for varying periods owing to sandbar development across tidal inlets. Larvae do not metamorphose if trapped in estuaries and recruitment ceases. Thus, mudprawn populations are directly affected by tidal inlet dynamics. In extreme cases populations become locally extinct if inlets remain closed for extended periods.  相似文献

Population dynamics of many intertidal organisms are strongly affected by the abundance and distribution of larvae arriving on the shore. In particular, not only absolute numbers of settlers but also the degree of synchronisation of settlement can have a strong influence on whether density-dependent or density-independent processes shape adult shape populations. Temporal variation in rates of settlement and recruitment of the mussel Perna perna on the south coast of South Africa was investigated using a nested spatial design at different temporal scales. Variability in settlement at spring tides was examined at two temporal scales: lunar (to investigate the effect of state of the moon on settlement) and tidal (to investigate the influence of state of the tide on mussel settlement). Recruitment over neap tides was examined at one temporal scale, fortnight (to investigate the effect of date on mussel recruitment).Strong temporal variation was evident for both settlement and recruitment, but not at all time scales. Distinct peaks of settler/recruit abundance were observed during the lunar and neap tide studies. Recruitment intensity differed over the course of the year, and pulsing of recruitment was generally synchronised among locations. However, the strength of pulsing differed dramatically among locations, giving a significant interaction between fortnight and location. The finest temporal scale, investigated in the tidal study, did not reveal a significant effect of the state of the tide on settlement. The state of the moon (new or full) was not significant as a main factor (p = 0.052), although generally more settlers arrived on the shore during new moon. Phase of the moon appeared to have an effect on settler abundances, but only when and where densities were high.  相似文献

The northern salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris halicoetes) is an endangered species endemic to the San Francisco Bay Estuary. Using a conservation behavior perspective, we examined how salt marsh harvest mice cope with both natural (daily tidal fluctuations) and anthropogenic (modification of tidal regime) changes in natural tidal wetlands and human-created diked wetlands, and investigated the role of behavioral flexibility in utilizing a human-created environment in the Suisun Marsh. We used radio telemetry to determine refuge use at high tide, space use, and movement rates to investigate possible differences in movement behavior in tidal versus diked wetlands. We found that the vast majority of the time salt marsh harvest mice remain in vegetation above the water during high tides. We also found no difference in space used by mice during high tide as compared to before or after high tide in either tidal or diked wetlands. We found no detectable difference in diurnal or nocturnal movement rates in tidal wetlands. However, we did find that diurnal movement rates for mice in diked wetlands were lower than nocturnal movement rates, especially during the new moon. This change in movement behavior in a relatively novel human-created habitat indicates that behavioral flexibility may facilitate the use of human-created environments by salt marsh harvest mice.  相似文献

Zooplankton abundance at a station in the Ria Formosa (SouthernPortugal) was monitored every week or second week over 18 monthsat incoming tide, high tide, ebb tide and low tide. The watersamples were filtered by 32µ mesh and examined under aninverted microscope. The proportion of planktonic larvae washigh all year round. They formed 50–70% of the metazoicplankton organisms during winter and 80 to >90% during summer. An extrapolation implied that this corresponds to 40–80%of the biomass in summer and <20% in winter. On average, roughly three-quarters of the larvae were nauplius larvae; theremaining quarter were meroplanktonic stages, especially ofgastropods, bivalves and polychaetes. Larval abundances variedindependently of tide (high tide-low tide), but showed a significantlynegative correlation with the tidal elevation (spring tide-neaptide) for total larval number and for most larval groups separately. It is outlined that next to a geographical component, theserelatively high larval figures are the result of the mesh sizeused. When treated as a component of the mesozooplankton, larvalnumber and biomass will always be greatly underestimated.  相似文献

Facultative paedomorphosis is the ability of a salamander to either metamorphose into a terrestrial, metamorphic adult or retain a larval morphology to become a sexually mature paedomorphic adult. It has been hypothesized that density and initial body size variation within populations are instrumental in cueing metamorphosis or paedomorphosis in salamanders, yet few studies have adequately tested these hypotheses in long-term experiments. Beginning in the spring of 2004, 36 experimental ponds were used to manipulate three body size variation levels (low, medium, high) and two density levels (low, high) of Ambystoma talpoideum larvae. Larvae were individually marked using visible implant elastomers and collected every 2 weeks in order to measure snout–vent length and mass. Bi-nightly sampling was used to collect new metamorphs as they appeared. Analysis revealed significant effects of density, size variation and morph on body size of individuals during the summer. Individuals that metamorphosed during the fall and following spring were significantly larger as larvae than those becoming paedomorphic across all treatments. These results support the Best-of-a-Bad-Lot hypothesis, which proposes that the largest larvae metamorphose in order to escape unfavorable aquatic habitats. Large larvae may metamorphose to leave aquatic habitats, regardless of treatment, due to the colder climate and lower productivity found in Kentucky, which is in the northern-most part of A. talpoideum’s range. By maintaining a long-term experiment, we have provided evidence for the transition of both larvae and paedomorphs into metamorphs during fall and spring metamorphosis events. Furthermore, the production of similar morphs under different environmental conditions observed in this research suggests that the ecological mechanisms maintaining polyphenisms may be more diverse that first suspected. This study tests the hypothesis that potted sweet orange plants show a significant variation in photosynthesis over seasonal and diurnal cycles, even in well-hydrated conditions. This hypothesis was tested by measuring diurnal variations in leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf water potential, and the responses of CO2 assimilation to increasing air CO2 concentrations in 1-year-old ‘Valência’ sweet orange scions grafted onto ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin rootstocks during the winter and summer seasons in a subtropical climate. In addition, diurnal leaf gas exchange was evaluated under controlled conditions, with constant environmental conditions during both winter and summer. In relation to our hypothesis, a greater rate of photosynthesis is found during the summer compared to the winter. Reduced photosynthesis during winter was induced by cool night conditions, as the diurnal fluctuation of environmental conditions was not limiting. Low air and soil temperatures caused decreases in the stomatal conductance and in the rates of the biochemical reactions underlying photosynthesis (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation and RuBP regeneration) during the winter compared to the values obtained for those markers in the summer. Citrus photosynthesis during the summer was not impaired by biochemical or photochemical reactions, as CO2 assimilation was only limited by stomatal conductance due to high leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (VPD) during the afternoon. During the winter, the reduction in photosynthesis during the afternoon was caused by decreases in RuBP regeneration and stomatal conductance, which are both precipitated by low night temperature.  相似文献

Settlement of benthic marine invertebrates is determined by the interaction between physical factors and biological processes, in which the tide, wind, and predation can play key roles, especially for species that recruit within estuaries. This complexity promotes high variability in recruitment and limited predictability of the size of annual cohorts. This study describes the settlement patterns of megalopae of the commercially important crab Cancer edwardsii at three locations (one in the center and two at the mouth of the estuary) within the Valdivia River estuary (~39.9°S), over three consecutive years (2006–2008). At each location, 12 passive benthic collectors with a natural substratum were deployed for 48?h at 7-day intervals, over a lunar cycle. Half of the collectors were covered with mesh to exclude predators. The main findings were as follows: (1) circulation changes due to upwelling relaxation or onshore winds controlled crab settlement at sites within the mouth of the estuary, (2) at the internal estuarine site, settlement was dominated by tidal effects, and (3) the effect of predation on settlement was negligible at all scales. The results show that the predominant physical factor controlling the return of competent crab larvae to estuarine environments varies spatially within the estuary. The lack of tidal influence on settlement at the mouth of the estuary can be explained by the overwhelming influence of the intense upwelling fronts and the micro-tidal regime in the study area.  相似文献

Gelatinous zooplankton is more abundant in the Wadden Sea area of North Sylt than in the adjacent North Sea. The hypothesis is tested that medusae maintain their position in the North Sylt Wadden Sea by ascending to the surface at flood tides and descending to the bottom during ebb tides, thus avoiding the strong ebb currents which could carry them out of this food-rich area. Surface sampling at a main tidal channel revealed great differences between high tide and low tide abundances of five species of medusae in the surface layer.Rathkea octopunctata, Sarsia tubulosa, Eucheilota macultata andPleurobrachia pileus were all more abundant around high tide than during low tide. Bongo net sampling in different depth layers revealed thatPleurobrachia pileus, Bougainvillia ramosa andEucheilota maculata showed a preference for the surface layers around high tide, whereas most of the individuals were found in the deepest layer around low tide. The results suggest tidally-induced vertical migration of medusae in tidal channels. This may assist maintenance of the populations in the Wadden Sea area near Sylt.  相似文献

Colonial hydroid Laomedea flexuosa inhabits the narrow belt of low littoral zone in the White Sea. What is a reason of so limited habitat? The authors studied the time of planulae release and its behavior during free swimming stages and settlement of larvae in nature and under laboratory conditions. Three methods were used to registrate the tidal dependent dynamic of planulae release: 1) plankton collecting bags around Fucus inflatus kelp with mature hydroids colonies; 2) active stirring kelps with hydroids in container with water, which is an old way to stimulate planulae release; 3) direct account of the mature planulae into gonangia. The dynamic of intensity of L. flexuosa planulae release was investigated according 3-4 phases of tidal cycle. All data were statistically tested. For L. flexuosa a moment of general larvae release was found in phase with the period of low water. This correlation could explain strict limitation in occurrence of L. flexuosa only in the lower part of intertidal zone. Laboratory experiments show that planulae release is stimulated by littoral drainage, and renewal of water movement during the beginning of tide. The decrease in time of planulae settlement is an affective way for marine sedentary species to stay in a narrow zone of optimal habitat.  相似文献

Intertidal sandflats inhabited by fiddler crabs are ideal systems in which to study the effects of physical and biological processes. This study addressed two questions: (1) Do fiddler crab feeding and tidal inundation have measurable effects on the sandflat over one tidal cycle? (2) Does the sandflat change over the course of a year? In field exclusion/inclusion experiments, fiddler crabs reduced sediment organic content by 40%, Chlorophyll a levels by 20% and meiofaunal density by 60% in one tidal cycle. Effects were most pronounced in the spring when organic content and meiofaunal densities were maximal. Effects of foraging were not erased by the tide and accumulated over time. The sandflat had highest levels of all variables in spring and minimal levels during summer and fall. Crabs graze the sandflat to minimum levels in the spring. Due to crab foraging, the flat is barren during the summer and fall, and recovers during the winter when crabs are minimally active.  相似文献

Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt is an invasive species that is firmly established on intertidal and subtidal rocky shores of Europe and the Pacific coast of North America. Local success and spread of S. muticum is thought to rely on its reproductive potential that seems dependent on exogenous factors like tidal and lunar cycles. This study is the first to compare the reproductive patterns (periodicity of egg expulsion and embryo settlement) of this invader in two different habitats: the middle and low intertidal. The combination of monthly, daily, and tidal samples at triplicate sites within each habitat showed a semilunar periodicity of egg expulsion and embryo settlement coincident with increasing tidal amplitude just before full and new moons. In both habitats, duration of each egg expulsion event was ~1 week, and embryo settlement occurred during the first daily low tide and with the incoming high tide during spring tides. However, both expulsion and settlement started 1–2 d earlier, expulsion saturation was faster, and settlement was higher in the mid‐ compared to the low intertidal. Our results suggest that the exact timing of gamete expulsion and embryo release of S. muticum responds to local factors, including tidal cues, which result in differences between mid‐ and low‐intertidal habitats.  相似文献

Atlantic tidal fluctuations drive pressure head variations in shallow offshore wells drilled into the limestone subsurface on both the Florida Bay and Atlantic sides of Key Largo, Florida, USA. We tested the hypothesis that these pressure head variations influence groundwater flow and that flux rate variability is associated with tidal variability. We used an automated Rn monitor to make continuous measurements of 222Rn, a natural tracer of groundwater discharge, in Florida Bay waters. We also deployed three types of seepage meters, including an automated heat pulse meter to collect a continuous record of seepage from the sediments. Drum type seepage meters inserted into soft sediments and fiberglass meters cemented to the rocky bay floor were utilized with pre-filled 4-l bag collectors, and monitored on an hourly basis. Maximum Rn inventories in Florida Bay waters were associated with high tide on the Atlantic side of the island. Modeling of the Rn variation indicated variable groundwater discharge rates with maximum flux occurring at high Atlantic tide. Seepage meter results in Florida Bay were consistent with 222Rn modeling. Florida Bay seepage meter rates showed positive correlation with Atlantic tide, meter 1, r?=?0.63, n?=?12, p?<?0.025 and meter 2, r?=?0.67, n?=?12, p?<?0.025. A seepage meter offshore of the Atlantic side of Key Largo exhibited rates that were inversely correlated with Atlantic tide (r?=?0.87, n?=?9, p?<?0.005) showing negative rates when the tide was high, and positive rates when the tide was low. Overall, our results are consistent with the hypothesis of Reich et al. (2002), that pressure head variations driven by Atlantic tide influence groundwater seepage rate variability in Florida Bay off Key Largo. Effectively, as proposed by Reich et al. (2002), Key Largo functions as a semi-permeable dam separating Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

The use of tidal pools during early ontogeny is likely to enhance growth, condition and survival chances of the transient marine fish larvae and juveniles that use them. However, the diet of such individuals within tidal pools is poorly known; this knowledge is important to understand why such high numbers of individuals use these environments in spring and summer on the Portuguese coast. Transient marine fishes were sampled monthly over a two‐year period in four tidal pools of a rocky reef on the west Portuguese coast. The diet composition in the tidal pools of the most abundant marine fish larvae/juveniles, Diplodus sargus and Atherina spp., were investigated. Stomach and gut contents of 483 individuals (354 D. sargus ranging in total length from 9 to 87 mm and 134 Atherina spp. ranging in total length from 10 to 31 mm) were analyzed and dietary indices estimated for the different developmental stages. The diet of D. sargus composed mainly harpacticoid copepods, chironomid larvae, ostracods, chironomid adults and amphipods; whereas the diet of Atherina spp. was mainly harpacticoid copepods, ostracods and gastropods. Along the ontogenetic development, the proportions and diversity of food items in the D. sargus diet varied. Importance of the harpacticoid copepods decreased with increasing fish size, while that of amphipods and isopods increased. Larvae and juvenile D. sargus and Atherina spp. found in rocky reef tidal pools are opportunistic consumers of a wide range of prey and thus take advantage of the high prey availability in these habitats.  相似文献
