Variation in the carbon isotopic composition of ecosystem respiration ('13CR) was studied for 3 years along a precipitation gradient in western Oregon, USA, using the Keeling plot approach. Study sites included six coniferous forests, dominated by Picea sitchensis, Tsuga heterophylla, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus ponderosa, and Juniperus occidentalis, and ranged in location from the Pacific coast to the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains (a 250-km transect). Mean annual precipitation across these sites ranged from 227 to 2,760 mm. Overall '13CR varied from -23.1 to -33.1‰, and within a single forest, it varied in magnitude by 3.5-8.5‰. Mean annual '13CR differed significantly in the forests and was strongly correlated with mean annual precipitation. The carbon isotope ratio of carbon stocks (leaves, fine roots, litter, and soil organic matter) varied similarly with mean precipitation (more positive at the drier sites). There was a strong link between '13CR and the vapor saturation deficit of air (vpd) 5-10 days earlier, both across and within sites. This relationship is consistent with stomatal regulation of gas exchange and associated changes in photosynthetic carbon isotope discrimination. Recent freeze events caused significant deviation from the '13CR versus vpd relationship, resulting in higher than expected '13CR values.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate how different soil types and elevated N deposition (0.7 vs 7 g N m-2a-1) influence the effects of elevated CO2 (370 vs 570 µmol CO2 mol-1) on soil nutrients and net accumulation of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn in spruce (Picea abies) and beech (Fagus sylvatica). Model ecosystems were established in large open-top chambers on two different forest soils: a nutrient-poor acidic loam and a nutrient-rich calcareous sand. The response of net nutrient accumulation to elevated atmospheric CO2 depended upon soil type (interaction soil 2 CO2, P<0.05 for N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Zn) and differed between spruce and beech. On the acidic loam, CO2 enrichment suppressed net accumulation of all nutrients in beech (P<0.05 for P, S, Zn), but stimulated it for spruce (P<0.05 for Fe, Zn) On the nutrient-rich calcareous sand, increased atmospheric CO2 enhanced nutrient accumulation in both species significantly. Increasing the N deposition did not influence the CO2 effects on net nutrient accumulation with either soil. Under elevated atmospheric CO2, the accumulation of N declined relative to other nutrients, as indicated by decreasing ratios of N to other nutrients in tree biomass (all ratios: P<0.001, except the N to S ratio). In both the soil and soil solution, elevated CO2 did not influence concentrations of base cations and available P. Under CO2 enrichment, concentrations of exchangeable NH4+ decreased by 22% in the acidic loam and increased by 50% in the calcareous sand (soil 2 CO2, P<0.001). NO3- concentrations decreased by 10-70% at elevated CO2 in both soils (P<0.01).  相似文献

Yoldia hyperborea is a deposit-feeding circumpolar protobranch that also inhabits muddy sediments of the cold water boreal system of Conception Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. Little is known about this species, despite its wide distribution and frequent high density in the benthos. The present work deals with oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion under cold ambient conditions. Y. hyperborea showed low basal metabolism [0.051 ml O2 hу·(g dry weight)у, T=у°C] and low ammonia excretion rates [4.212 µg·NH4-N·hу·(g dry weight)у, T=у°C]. Low metabolic activity could prove a useful strategy during periods of low food availability. In addition, Y. hyperborea was able to regulate its O2 consumption rate at very low pO2 levels, which may be advantageous for a species that may experience periods of hypoxia.  相似文献

Conifers decrease the amount of biomass apportioned to leaves relative to sapwood in response to increasing atmospheric evaporative demand. We determined how these climate-driven shifts in allocation affect the aboveground water relations of ponderosa pine growing in contrasting arid (desert) and humid (montane) climates. To support higher transpiration rates, a low leaf:sapwood area ratio (AL/AS) in desert versus montane trees could increase leaf-specific hydraulic conductance (KL). Alternatively, a high sapwood volume:leaf area ratio in the desert environment may increase the contribution of stored water to transpiration. Transpiration and hydraulic conductance were determined by measuring sap flow (JS) and shoot water potential during the summer (June-July) and fall (August-September). The daily contribution of stored water to transpiration was determined using the lag between the beginning of transpiration from the crown at sunrise and JS. In the summer, mean maximum JS was 31.80LJ.74 and 24.34Dž.05 g m-2 s-1 for desert and montane trees (a 30.6% difference), respectively. In the fall, JS was 25.33NJ.52 and 16.36dž.64 g m-2 s-1 in desert and montane trees (a 54.8% difference), respectively. JS was significantly higher in desert relative to montane trees during summer and fall (P<0.05). Predawn and midday shoot water potential and sapwood relative water content did not differ between environments. Desert trees had a 129% higher KL than montane trees in the summer (2.41᎒-5 versus 1.05᎒-5 kg m-2 s-1 MPa-1, P<0.001) and a 162% higher KL in the fall (1.97᎒-5 versus 0.75᎒-5 kg m-2 s-1 MPa-1, P<0.001). Canopy conductance decreased with D in all trees at all measurement periods (P<0.05). Maximum gC was 3.91 times higher in desert relative to montane trees averaged over the summer and fall. Water storage capacity accounted for 11 kg (11%) and 10.6 kg (17%) of daily transpiration in the summer and fall, respectively, and did not differ between desert and montane trees. By preventing xylem tensions from reaching levels that cause xylem cavitation, high KL in desert ponderosa pine may facilitate its avoidance. Thus, the primary benefit of low leaf:sapwood allocation in progressively arid environments is to increase KL and not to increase the contribution of stored water to transpiration.  相似文献

Carbon isotope discrimination in photosynthetic bark   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We developed and tested a theoretical model describing carbon isotope discrimination during photosynthesis in tree bark. Bark photosynthesis reduces losses of respired CO2 from the underlying stem. As a consequence, the isotopic composition of source CO2 and the CO2 concentration around the chloroplasts are quite different from those of photosynthesizing leaves. We found three lines of evidence that bark photosynthesis discriminates against 13C. First, in bark of Populus tremuloides, the '13C of CO2 efflux increased from -24.2‰ in darkness to -15.8‰ in the light. In Pinus monticola, the '13C of CO2 efflux increased from -27.7‰ in darkness to -10.2‰ in the light. Observed increases in '13C were generally in good agreement with predictions from the theoretical model. Second, we found that '13C of dark-respired CO2 decreased following 2-3 h of illumination (P<0.01 for Populus tremuloides, P<0.001 for Pinus monticola). These decreases suggest that refixed photosynthate rapidly mixes into the respiratory substrate pool. Third, a field experiment demonstrated that bark photosynthesis influenced whole-tissue '13C. Long-term light exclusion caused a localized increase in the '13C of whole bark and current-year wood in branches of P. monticola (P<0.001 and P<0.0001, respectively). Thus bark photosynthesis was shown to discriminate against 13C and create a pool of photosynthate isotopically lighter than the dark respiratory pool in all three experiments. Failure to account for discrimination during bark photosynthesis could interfere with interpretation of the '13C in woody tissues or in woody-tissue respiration.  相似文献

Seed production and seedling recruitment were measured over 2 years under ambient (360 ppm) and elevated (475 ppm) atmospheric CO2 in a free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) experiment, carried out in a sheep-grazed pasture on dry, sandy soil in New Zealand. In both years elevated CO2 led to more dispersed seeds of the grasses Anthoxanthum odoratum, Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis, the legumes Trifolium repens and T. subterraneum and the herbs Hypochaeris radicata and Leontodon saxatilis. The increased seed dispersal in A. odoratum, H. radicata, Leontodon saxatilis and T. repens reflected both more inflorescences per unit area and more seeds per inflorescence under elevated CO2. The increased seed dispersal in Lolium perenne, P. pratensis and T. subterraneum was due solely to more inflorescences per unit area. The number of seedlings that emerged and survived to at least 7 months of age was increased by elevated CO2 for H. radicata, Leontodon saxatilis, T. repens and T. subterraneum in both years and for A. odoratum and Lolium perenne in the first year. For species where increased seedling recruitment was noted, there was a significant positive correlation between seed production in summer and seedling emergence in the following autumn and winter, and sowing 200 extra seeds per species m-2 resulted in more seedlings compared to unsown controls. Elevated CO2 did not affect seedling survival in any species. There was no measurable effect of elevated CO2 on canopy and soil surface conditions or soil moisture at the time of seedling emergence. The results suggest the dominant effect of elevated CO2 on seedling recruitment in this pasture was an indirect one, reflecting effects on the number of seeds produced. The biomass of H. radicata, Leontodon saxatilis, T. repens and T. subterraneum in the above-ground vegetation was greater under elevated than ambient CO2. However, the size of individual seedlings and mature plants of these four species was unaffected by elevated CO2. The results indicate an important way elevated CO2 influenced plant species composition in this pasture was through changes in the pattern of seedling recruitment.  相似文献

We examine the effects of spacing and layout on the growth and form of 3- to 4-year-old Eucalyptus globulus in a farm forestry context. Four planting layouts were chosen. These represented the range commonly in use in farm forestry: block plantings (2Ǹ m), triple rows (2Ǹ m) at 10-m intervals, single rows (2᎒ m) and isolated trees (10᎒ m). The physiological significance of key results is interpreted in terms of changes in the parameters of a simple plantation growth model. Under conditions where levels of direct light are high, for example during summer, block-planted trees intercepted only 38% of the light intercepted by isolated trees. On a stand basis, however, the combination of incident radiation and ground coverage declined with lower stand densities. While stand leaf area index declined from around 6 to 1 with increased spacing, individual tree leaf areas rose from around 50 m2 in block plantings to 150 m2 in isolated trees. The proportion of above-ground biomass found in stems declined with increasing spacing as the mass in foliage and branches increased. Stems accounted for 65% of above-ground biomass in block-planted trees but only 35% in isolated trees. The contributions of leaves and branches correspondingly rose from 19% to 35% and from 16% to 29%, respectively. Changes in biomass distribution were accompanied by increasing branch number, branch thickness, flatter branch angles and the longer retention of lower branches with greater spacing. These changes have implications for the merchantability of the timber. The efficiency of above-ground radiation conversion was constant at 0.67 g MJ-1 irrespective of spacing. We estimated that foliar maintenance respiration (Rm) accounted for about 90% of above-ground Rm. On a stand basis Rm costs block plantings 23.90 t DM ha-1 year-1 (50% annual above-ground photosynthetic production) compared with 6.22 t DM ha-1 year-1 (40% annual above-ground photosynthetic production) in stands of isolated trees.  相似文献

Water availability and carbon isotope discrimination in conifers   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
The stable C isotope composition ('13C) of leaf and wood tissue has been used as an index of water availability at both the species and landscape level. However, the generality of this relationship across species has received little attention. We compiled literature data for a range of conifers and examined relationships among landscape and environmental variables (altitude, precipitation, evaporation) and '13C. A significant component of the variation in '13C was related to altitude (discrimination decreased with altitude in stemwood, 2.53‰ km-1 altitude, r2=0.49, and in foliage, 1.91‰ km-1, r2=0.42), as has been noted previously. The decrease in discrimination with altitude was such that the gradient in CO2 partial pressure into the leaf (Pa-Pi) and altitude were generally unrelated. The ratio of precipitation to evaporation (P/E) explained significant variation in Pa-Pi of stemwood (r2=0.45) and foliage (r2=0.27), but only at low (<0.8) P/E. At greater P/E there was little or no relationship, and other influences on '13C probably dominated the effect of water availability. We also examined the relationship between plant drought stress (O) and '13C within annual rings of stemwood from Pinus radiata and Pinus pinaster in south-western Australia. Differential thinning and fertiliser application produced large differences in the availability of water, nutrients and light to individual trees. At a density of 750 stems ha-1, O and '13C were less (more negative) than at 250 stems ha-1 indicating greater drought stress and less efficient water use, contrary to what was expected in light of the general relationship between discrimination and P/E. The greater '13C of trees from heavily thinned plots may well be related to an increased interception of radiation by individual trees and greater concentrations of nutrients in foliage - attributes that increase rates of photosynthesis, reduce Pi and increase '13C. '13C was thus modified to a greater extent by interception of radiation and by nutrient concentrations than by water availability and the '13C-O relationship varied between thinning treatments. Within treatments, the relationship between '13C and O was strong (0.38<r2<0.58). We conclude that '13C may well be a useful indicator of water availability or drought stress, but only in seasonally dry climates (P/E<1) and where variation in other environmental factors can be accounted for.  相似文献

In-situ estimates of fast-ice algal productivity at Cape Evans, McMurdo Sound, in 1999 were lower than at the same site in previous years. Under-ice irradiance was between 0 and 8 µmol photons m-2 s-1; the ice was between 1.9 and 2.0 m thick and the algal biomass averaged 150 mg chl a m-2, although values as high as 378 mg chl a m-2 were recorded. Production on 11 and 12 November was between 0.053 and 1.474 mg C m-2 h-1. When the data from 11 November were fitted to a hyperbolic tangent function, a multilinear regression gave estimates for Pmax of 0.571 nmol O2 cm-2 s-1, an ! of 0.167 nmol O2 cm-2 s-1 µmol-1 photons m-2 s-1 and an Ek of 3.419 µmol photons m-2 s-1. A Pmax of 2.674 nmol O2 cm-2 s-1, an ! of 0.275 nmol O2 cm-2 s-1 µmol-1 photons m-2 s-1, r of 0.305 nmol O2 cm-2 s-1 and an Ek of 9.724 µmol-1 photons m-2 s-1 were estimated from the 12 November data. The sea-ice algal community was principally comprised of Nitzschia stellata, Entomoneis kjellmanii and Berkeleya adeliensis. Other taxa present included N. lecointei, Fragilariopsis spp., Navicula glaciei, Pleurosigma spp. and Amphora spp. Variations in the method for estimating the thickness of the diffusive boundary layer were not found to significantly affect the measurements of oxygen flux. However, the inability to accurately measure fine-scale variations in biomass is thought to contribute to the scatter of the P versus E data.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forests of northern Sweden are often considered to be N limited. This limitation may have been exacerbated by the elimination of wildfire as a natural disturbance factor in these boreal forests. Phenolic inhibition of N mineralization and nitrification (due to litter and exudates of ericaceous shrubs) has been proposed as a mechanism for N limitation of these forests, but this hypothesis remains largely untested. N mineralization rates, nitrification rates, and sorption of free phenolic compounds were assessed along a fire-induced chronosequence in northern Sweden. A total of 34 forest stands varying in age since the last fire were identified and characterized. Overstorey and understorey vegetative composition and depth of humus were analysed in replicated plots at all 34 sites. Eight of the forest stands aged 3-352 years since the last fire were selected for intensive investigation in which ten replicate ionic resin capsules (used to assess net N mineralization and nitrification) and non-ionic carbonaceous resin capsules (used to assess free phenolic compounds) were installed at the interface of humus and mineral soil. A highly significant correlation was observed between site age and net sorption of inorganic N to resin capsules. Net accumulation of NH4+ and NO3- on resin capsules followed a linear decrease (R2=0.61, P<0.01) with time perhaps as a result of increased N immobilization with successional C loading. NO3- sorption to resin capsules followed a logarithmic decrease (R2=0.80, P<0.01) that may be related to a logarithmic increase in dwarf shrub cover and decreased soil charcoal sorption potential along this chronosequence. A replicated field study was conducted at one of the late successional field sites to assess the influence of charcoal and an added labile N source on N turnover. Three rates of charcoal (0, 100, and 1,000 g M-2) and two rates of glycine (0 and 50 g N as glycine M-2) were applied in a factorial design to microplots in a randomized complete block pattern. Net ammonification (as assessed by NH4+ sorption to resins) was readily increased by the addition of a labile N source, but this increase in NH4+ did not stimulate nitrification. Nitrification was stimulated slightly by the addition of charcoal resulting in similar levels of resin-sorbed NO3- as those found in early successional sites. Resin-sorbed polyphenol concentrations were decreased with charcoal amendments, but were actually increased with N amendments (likely due to decomposition of polyphenols). Net N mineralization appears to be limited by rapid NH4+ immobilization whereas nitrification is limited by the lack of an appropriate environment or by the presence of inhibitory compounds in late successional forests of northern Sweden.  相似文献

Coarse woody debris (CWD) is an important component of the forest carbon cycle, acting as a carbon pool and a source of CO2 in temperate forest ecosystems. We used a soda-lime closed-chamber method to measure CO2 efflux from downed CWD (diameter ≥5 cm) and to examine CWD respiration (R CWD) under field conditions over 1 year in a temperate secondary pioneer forest in Takayama forest. We also investigated tree mortality (input to the CWD pool) from the data obtained from the annual tree census, which commenced in 2000. We developed an exponential function of temperature to predict R CWD in each decay class (R 2 = 0.81–0.97). The sensitivity of R CWD to changing temperature, expressed as Q 10, ranged from 2.12 to 2.92 and was relatively high in decay class III. Annual C flux from CWD (F CWD) was extrapolated using continuous air temperature measurements and CWD necromass pools in the three decay classes. F CWD was 3.0 (class I), 17.8 (class II), and 13.7 g C m?2 year?1 (class III) and totaled 34 g C m?2 year?1 in 2009. Annual input to CWD averaged 77 g C m?2 year?1 from 2000 to 2009. The budget of the CWD pool in the Takayama forest, including tree mortality inputs and respiratory outputs, was 0.43 Mg C ha?1 year?1 (net C sink) owing to high tree mortality in the mature pioneer forest. The potential CWD sink is important for the carbon cycle in temperate successional forests.  相似文献

Leaves from several desert and woodland species, including gymnosperms and angiosperms with both C3 and C4 physiology, were analyzed to detect trends in '13Cleaf with elevation and slope aspect along two transects in southeastern Utah and south-central New Mexico, USA. The main difference between the two transects is the steeper elevational gradient for mean annual and summer precipitation in the southern transect. For any given species, we found that isotopic differences between individual plants growing at the same site commonly equal differences measured for plants along the entire altitudinal gradient. In C3 plants, '13Cleaf values become slightly enriched at the lowest elevations, the opposite of trends identified in more humid regions. Apparently, increasing water-use efficiency with drought stress offsets the influence of other biotic and abiotic factors that operate to decrease isotopic discrimination with elevation. For some species shared by the two transects (e.g., Pinus edulis and Cercocarpus montanus), '13Cleaf values are dramatically depleted at sites that receive more than 550 mm mean annual precipitation, roughly the boundary (pedalfer-pedocal) at which soils commonly fill to field capacity in summer and carbonates are leached. We hypothesize that, in summer-wet areas, this may represent the boundary at which drought stress overtakes other factors in determining the sign of '13Cleaf with elevation. The opposition of isotopic trends with elevation in arid versus humid regions cautions against standard correction for elevation in comparative studies of '13Cleaf.  相似文献

Shoot architecture was quantified by measuring the "maximum silhouette area ratio" (Rmax). Rmax was calculated from the maximum silhouette area (or projected area) of the intact shoot, divided by the silhouette area of the leaves or phylloclades (leaf-like flattened stems) when they are removed from the shoot and laid out flat. Like conifers of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) with non-appressed foliage, the Rmax of shade-adapted shoots ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 in New Zealand (NZ) conifers with non-appressed foliage. Defining a "leaf" to mean either a true leaf or a phylloclade, the following was found: leaf area/leaf dry weight, leaf area/shoot dry weight, and leaf dry weight/shoot dry weight, were all similar in the shade-shoots of NZ and NH conifers. None of these variables were significantly correlated with Rmax in the NZ conifers, unless species with leaves averaging less than 4 mm2 in size were excluded from the analyses. Foliage dry weight/shoot projected area was strongly correlated with Rmax. NZ conifers had both smaller and larger mean leaf sizes in comparison to NH conifers. The mean projected area per shade-adapted leaf of NZ conifers varied from 2.7 to 436 mm2. In NH conifers, the mean projected area per shade leaf varied from 12 to 83 mm2. Except for the strikingly larger range in leaf size in NZ conifers, the data support a hypothesis of strong convergent evolution of shade-shoot architecture in NZ and NH conifers. The results are discussed in relation to photosynthesis, stand production, and the ecological distribution of conifers.  相似文献

Wastewater generated in the elaboration of table olives has been treated using activated sludge from a municipal wastewater plant after adequate acclimation. To avoid bactericide properties of some chemical structures present in this type of effluents, synthetic urban wastewater has been used to dilute the original wastewater. The main parameters affecting efficiency of biological processes have been studied. Thus, initial biomass concentration, temperature up to 303 K (upper working temperature limit = 313 K) and initial substrate concentration exerted a positive influence on COD degradation rate. The optimum pH was found to be around 7, experiencing a slight inhibition on cell activity at pH 4. Under the experimental conditions investigated other parameters like polyphenol content, absorbance at 254 nm and total organic carbon were also reduced to some extent. Only nitrates amount was increased after the biological process took place. A kinetic model based on Monod equation was proposed and applied to experimental results. The maximum specific growth rate was calculated by means of the aforementioned kinetic model. The value of this parameter as a function of temperature was fitted to an Arrhenius expression, wmax = 9.43 2 1010 exp(72021/RT) hу (R in J molу Kу283 K < T < 303 K, pH , 7-10).  相似文献

An earliness per se gene, designated Eps-Am1, was mapped in diploid wheat in F2 and single-seed descent mapping populations from the cross between cultivated (DV92) and wild (G3116) Triticum monococcum accessions. A QTL with a peak on RFLP loci Xcdo393 and Xwg241, the most distal markers on the long arm of chromosome 1Am, explained 47% of the variation in heading date (LOD score 8.3). Progeny tests for the two F2:3 families with critical recombination events between Xcdo393 and Xwg241 showed that the gene was distal to Xcdo393 and linked to Xwg241. Progeny tests and replicated experiments with line #3 suggested that Eps-Am1 was distal to Xwg241. This gene showed a large effect on heading date in the controlled environment experiments, and a smaller, but significant, effect under natural conditions. Eps-Am1 showed significant epistatic interactions with photoperiod and vernalization treatments, suggesting that the different classes of genes affecting heading date interact as part of a complex network that controls the timing of flowering induction. Besides its interactions with other genes affecting heading date, Eps-Am1 showed a significant interaction with temperature. The effect of temperature was larger in plants carrying the DV92 allele for late flowering than in those carrying the G3116 allele for early flowering. Average differences in heading date between the experiments performed at 16 °C and 23 °C were approximately 11 days (P < 0.001) for the lines carrying the Eps-Am1 allele for early flowering but approximately 50 days (P < 0.0001) for the lines carrying the allele for late flowering. The large differences in heading time (average 80 days) observed between plants carrying the G3116 and DV92 alleles when grown at 16 °C, suggest that it would be possible to produce very detailed maps for this gene to facilitate its future positional cloning.  相似文献

C4 plants are uncommon in cold environments and do not generally occur in the alpine tundra. In the White Mountains of California, however, the C4 grass Muhlenbergia richardsonis is common in the alpine zone at 3,300-3,800 m, with the highest population observed at 3,960 m (13,000 feet) above sea level. This is the highest reported C4 species in North America and is near the world altitude limit for C4 plants (4,000-4,500 m). Above 3,800 m, M. richardsonis is largely restricted to southern slope aspects, with greatest frequency on southeast-facing slopes. In open tundra, M. richardsonis formed prostrate mats with a mean height of 2.5 cm. Neighboring C3 grasses were two to three times taller. Because of its short stature, leaf temperature of M. richardsonis was greatly influenced by the boundary layer of the ground, rising over 20°C above air temperature in full sun and still air and over 10°C above air temperature in full sun and wind velocity of 1-4 m s-1. Thus, although air temperatures did not exceed 15°C, midday leaf temperatures of M. richardsonis were routinely between 25°C and 35°C, a range favorable to C4 photosynthesis. At night, leaf temperature of M. richardsonis was often 5-12°C below air temperature, resulting in regular exposure to subzero temperatures and frosting of the leaves. No visible injury was associated with exposure to freezing night temperatures. The presence of M. richardsonis in the alpine zone demonstrates that C4 plants can tolerate extreme cold during the growing season. The localization to microsites where leaf temperatures can exceed 25°C during the day, however, indicates that even when cold tolerant, C4 plants still require periods of high leaf temperature to remain competitive with C3 species. In this regard, the prostrate growth form of M. richardsonis compensates for the alpine climate by allowing sufficient heating of the leaf canopy during the day.  相似文献

The mixing behaviour of the liquid phase in concentric-tube airlift bioreactors of different scale (RIMP: VL=0.070 m3; RIS-1: VL=2.50 m3; RIS-2: VL=5.20 m3) in terms of mixing time was investigated. This mixing parameter was determined from the output curves to an initial Dirac pulse, using the classical tracer response technique, and analyzed in relation to process and geometrical parameters, such as: gas superficial velocity, xSGR; top clearance, hS; bottom clearance, hB, and ratio of the resistances at downcomer entrance, Ad/AR. A correlation between the mixing time and the specified operating and geometrical parameters was developed, which was particularized for two flow regimes: bubbly and transition (xSGRА.08 m/s) and churn turbulent flow (xSGR> 0.08 m/s) respectively. The correlation was applied in bioreactors of different scale with a maximum error of ᆲ%.  相似文献

Changes in the stem radius of young Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were related to changes in stem water content in order to investigate the relationship between diurnal stem size fluctuations and internally stored water. Experiments were performed on living trees and on cut stem segments. The defoliated stem segments were dried under room conditions and weight (W), volume (V), and xylem water potential (Os) were continuously monitored for 95 h. Additionally, photos of cross-sections of fresh and air-dried stem segments were taken. For stem segments we found that the change in V was linearly correlated to the change in W as long as Os was >-2.3ǂ.3 MPa (phase transition point). Stem contraction occurred almost solely in the elastic tissues of the bark (cambium, phloem, and parenchyma), and the stem radius changes were closely coupled to bark water content. For living trees, it is therefore possible to estimate the daily contribution of "bark water" to transpiration from knowledge of the stem size and continuous measurements of the stem radius fluctuations. When Os reaches the phase-transition point, water is also withdrawn from the inelastic tissue of the stem (xylem), which - in the experiment with stem segments - was indicated by an increasing ratio between (V and (W. We assume that for Os below the transition point, air is sucked into the tracheids (cavitation) and water is also withdrawn from the xylem. Due to the fact that in living P. abies Os rarely falls below -2.3ǂ.3 MPa and the xylem size is almost unaffected by radius fluctuations, dendrometers are useful instruments with which to derive the diurnal changes in the bark water contents of Norway spruce trees.  相似文献

The stomatal characteristics, length and dry weight as well as stable carbon isotope composition (i13C) of needles and tree rings of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) at different altitudes in the Qilian mountains were investigated. The results showed that stomatal density, distribution pattern on epidermis, and length and dry weight of needles all increased with altitude below 3,000 m. In contrast, these parameters all decreased with increasing altitude above 3,000 m. Furthermore an assay of tree rings showed that near 3,000 m in altitude was the optimum zone for growth and development of Qinghai spruce. Although atmospheric CO2 concentration influences stomatal density, the effects of many environmental factors, such as temperature, light and rainfall, could obscure the effects of changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration on stomatal density at altitudes higher than the optimum for growth. The correlation of stomatal density with atmospheric CO2 concentration and i13C of Qinghai spruce needles was significant below 3,000 m, but was insignificant above 3,000 m altitude. The i13C value of needles, however, was negatively correlated with atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Therefore, the influence of altitude should be considered in research on plant physiological ecology and the relationship of stomatal density with i13C value or atmospheric CO2 concentration.  相似文献

Buoyancy was measured for 258 specimens representing 13 species of adult and sub-adult nototheniids, bathydraconids, and channichthyids from the South Shetland Islands. Measurements were expressed as percentage buoyancy (%B)=Wwater/Wair2. There were no neutrally buoyant species and mean values for %B were 3.07-6.11%, with channichthyids at the low end and benthic nototheniids and bathydraconids at the high end. All species showed an ontogenetic decrease in %B with increasing body weight. With the exception of Champsocephalus gunnari, there was no sexual dimorphism in %B within this sample. With some exceptions, values for %B were consistent with life-history information. Sub-adult Dissostichus mawsoni were not neutrally buoyant, as are large adults. Notothenia rossii had a significantly lower %B than closely related N. coriiceps. Benthic Gobionotothen gibberifrons had a lower %B than semipelagic Lepidonotothen larseni. Although they exhibit some diversification in life history, the four channichthyids in the sample were similar in %B. Neutral buoyancy is rare in notothenioids and may be confined to a single nototheniid clade.  相似文献
