Growth and reproduction are two essential life‐history traits for fungi. Understanding life‐history strategies provides insight into the environmental adaption of species. Here, we investigated the colonial morphology, vegetative growth, and asexual reproduction of the ascomycete fungus Bionectria ochroleuca in response to a variety of environmental conditions. We demonstrated that the increased temperature from 15 to 25°C induced mycelial growth and conidiation in B. ochroleuca. We also found that the optimal temperatures for mycelial growth and conidial formation in this fungus species were 25 and 30°C, respectively. However, as the temperature increased from 25 to 30°C, mycelial growth was suppressed, but the total number of conidia was significantly increased. The shift in light–dark cycles dramatically changed the morphological features of the colonies and affected both vegetative growth and asexual reproduction. Under incubation environments of alternating light and dark (16:8 and 8:16 light:dark cycles), conidiophores and conidia in the colonies formed dense‐sparse rings and displayed synchronous wave structures. When the light duration was prolonged in the sequence of 0, 8, 16, and 24 hr per day, mycelial growth was suppressed, but conidiation was promoted. Together, our results indicate that temperature and light period may trigger a trade‐off between vegetative growth and asexual reproduction in B. ochroleuca.  相似文献

Passive management to preserve endangered plant species involves measures to avoid anthropogenic disturbance of natural populations, but this approach may not sustain plants that require disturbance-maintained habitats. Active management is often necessary to maintain existing habitats or provide new habitats for endangered species recovery. Our objective was to examine the effects of two disturbances in floodplain forests, soil flooding and light availability, on survival, stem length, stem diameter and ramet production of endangered Lindera melissifolia (Walt.) Blume. We used a water impoundment facility to control the timing and duration of flooding (0, 45 or 90 days) and shade houses to vary light availability (70, 63 or 5 % ambient light). Hydroperiod had little direct effect on steckling survival, stem length growth and stem diameter growth, supporting indications that soil flooding may be important for reduction of interspecific competition in L. melissifolia habitat. Greater ramet production by stecklings receiving no soil flooding likely resulted from longer periods of favorable soil conditions during each growing season. Positive stem length growth and stem diameter growth under all light levels demonstrates the plasticity of this species to acclimate to a range of light environments, though, greatest survival and stem length growth occurred when L. melissifolia received 37 % light, and stem diameter growth was greatest beneath 70 % light. Further, female clones produced more ramets as light availability increased. These results indicate that passive management absent natural disturbance could jeopardize sustainability of extant L. melissifolia populations, and this species would respond favorably to active management practices that create canopy openings to increase understory light availability.  相似文献

Increasingly, land managers have attempted to use extreme prescribed fire as a method to address woody plant encroachment in savanna ecosystems. The effect that these fires have on herbaceous vegetation is poorly understood. We experimentally examined immediate (<24 hr) bud response of two dominant graminoids, a C3 caespitose grass, Nassella leucotricha, and a C4 stoloniferous grass, Hilaria belangeri, following fires of varying energy (J/m2) in a semiarid savanna in the Edwards Plateau ecoregion of Texas. Treatments included high‐ and low‐energy fires determined by contrasting fuel loading and a no burn (control) treatment. Belowground axillary buds were counted and their activities classified to determine immediate effects of fire energy on bud activity, dormancy, and mortality. High‐energy burns resulted in immediate mortality of N. leucotricha and H. belangeri buds (p < .05). Active buds decreased following high‐energy and low‐energy burns for both species (p < .05). In contrast, bud activity, dormancy, and mortality remained constant in the control. In the high‐energy treatment, 100% (n = 24) of N. leucotricha individuals resprouted while only 25% (n = 24) of H. belangeri individuals resprouted (p < .0001) 3 weeks following treatment application. Bud depths differed between species and may account for this divergence, with average bud depths for N. leucotricha 1.3 cm deeper than H. belangeri (p < .0001). Synthesis and applications: Our results suggest that fire energy directly affects bud activity and mortality through soil heating for these two species. It is imperative to understand how fire energy impacts the bud banks of grasses to better predict grass response to increased use of extreme prescribed fire in land management.  相似文献

The sexual and asexual reproductive features of the graminoid species Arundinella hirta growing at riversides of the Jialing River were analyzed. It was found that the total seed mass, seed number per plant, and sexual reproductive allocation of A.hirta decreased with decreasing bank elevation, and plants growing at the lowest elevations of banks subjected to intense flooding did not show sexual reproduction. The total plant biomass and the number of ramifications per plant increased with flooding intensity, which implies that, contrary to sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction of A.hirta was enhanced by flooding.  相似文献

How does asexual reproduction influence genome evolution? Although is it clear that genomic structural variation is common and important in natural populations, we know very little about how one of the most fundamental of eukaryotic traits—mode of genomic inheritance—influences genome structure. We address this question with the New Zealand freshwater snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, which features multiple separately derived obligately asexual lineages that coexist and compete with otherwise similar sexual lineages. We used whole-genome sequencing reads from a diverse set of sexual and asexual individuals to analyze genomic abundance of a critically important gene family, rDNA (the genes encoding rRNAs), that is notable for dynamic and variable copy number. Our genomic survey of rDNA in P. antipodarum revealed two striking results. First, the core histone and 5S rRNA genes occur between tandem copies of the 18S–5.8S–28S gene cluster, a unique architecture for these crucial gene families. Second, asexual P. antipodarum harbor dramatically more rDNA–histone copies than sexuals, which we validated through molecular and cytogenetic analysis. The repeated expansion of this genomic region in asexual P. antipodarum lineages following distinct transitions to asexuality represents a dramatic genome structural change associated with asexual reproduction—with potential functional consequences related to the loss of sexual reproduction.  相似文献

In long‐lived polygynous species, male reproductive success is often monopolized by a few mature dominant individuals. Young males are generally too small to be dominant and may employ alternative tactics; however, little is known about the determinants of reproductive success for young males. Understanding the causes and consequences of variability in early reproductive success may be crucial to assess the strength of sexual selection and possible long‐term trade‐offs among life‐history traits. Selective pressures driven by fluctuating environmental conditions may depend on age class. We evaluated the determinants of reproduction in male bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) aged 2–4 years using 30 years of individual‐level data. These young males cannot defend estrous ewes and use alternative mating tactics. We also investigated how the age of first detected reproduction was correlated to lifetime reproductive success and longevity. We found that reproductive success of males aged 3 years was positively correlated to body mass, to the proportion of males aged 2–4 years in the competitor pool, and to the number of females available per adult male. These results suggest that reproductive success depends on both competitive ability and population age–sex structure. None of these variables, however, had significant effects on the reproductive success of males aged 2 or 4 years. Known reproduction before the age of five increased lifetime reproductive success but decreased longevity, suggesting a long‐term survival cost of early reproduction. Our analyses reveal that both individual‐level phenotypic and population‐level demographic variables influence reproductive success by young males and provide a rare assessment of fitness trade‐offs in wild polygynous males.  相似文献

Facultative sexual organisms combine sexual and asexual reproduction within a single life cycle, often switching between reproductive modes depending on environmental conditions. These organisms frequently inhabit variable seasonal environments, where favorable periods alternate with unfavorable periods, generating temporally varying selection pressures that strongly influence life history decisions and hence population dynamics. Due to the rapidly accelerating changes in our global environment today, understanding the population dynamics and genetic changes in facultative sexual populations inhabiting seasonal environments is critical to assess and prepare for additional challenges that will affect such ecosystems. In this study, we aimed at obtaining insights into the seasonal population dynamics of the facultative sexual freshwater cnidarian Hydra oligactis through a combination of restriction site‐associated sequencing (RAD‐Seq) genotyping and the collection of phenotypic data on the reproductive strategy of field‐collected hydra strains in a standard laboratory environment. We reliably detected 42 MlGs from the 121 collected hydra strains. Most of MLGs (N = 35, 83.3%) were detected in only one season. Five MLGs (11.9%) were detected in two seasons, one (2.4%) in three seasons and one (2.4%) in all four seasons. We found no significant genetic change during the 2 years in the study population. Clone lines were detected between seasons and even years, suggesting that clonal lineages can persist for a long time in a natural population. We also found that distinct genotypes differ in sexual reproduction frequency, but these differences did not affect whether genotypes reappeared across samplings. Our study provides key insights into the biology of natural hydra populations, while also contributing to understanding the population biology of facultative sexual species inhabiting freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

For plants with mixed reproductive capabilities, asexual reproduction is more frequent in rare species and is considered a strategy for persistence when sexual recruitment is limited. We investigate whether asexual reproduction contributes to the persistence of two co-occurring, rare sedges that both experience irregular seed set and if their differing geographic distributions have a role in the relative contribution of clonality. Genotypic richness was high (R=0.889±0.02) across the clustered populations of Lepidosperma sp. Mt Caudan and, where detected, clonal patches were small, both in ramet numbers (⩽3 ramets/genet) and physical size (1.3±0.1 m). In contrast, genotypic richness was lower in the isolated L. sp. Parker Range populations, albeit more variable (R=0.437±0.13), with genets as large as 17 ramets and up to 5.8 m in size. Aggregated clonal growth generated significant fine-scale genetic structure in both species but to a greater spatial extent and with additional genet-level structure in L. sp. Parker Range that is likely due to restricted seed dispersal. Despite both species being rare, asexual reproduction clearly has a more important role in the persistence of L. sp. Parker Range than L. sp. Mt Caudan. This is consistent with our prediction that limitations to sexual reproduction, via geographic isolation to effective gene exchange, can lead to greater contributions of asexual reproduction. These results demonstrate the role of population isolation in affecting the balance of alternate reproductive modes and the contextual nature of asexual reproduction in rare species.  相似文献

Facultative asexual reproduction is a trait commonly found in invasive species. With a combination of sexual and asexual reproductive modes, such species may adapt to new environments via sexual recombination during range expansion, while at the same time having the benefits of asexuality such as the maintenance of fitness effects that depend upon heterozygosity. In the Western United States, native species of Rubus (Rosaceae) reproduce sexually whereas exotic naturalized Rubus species reproduce by pseudogamous apomixis. We hypothesized that new asexual lineages of Rubus could arise from hybridization in this range. To detect hybridization between native and exotic Rubus, we genotyped 579 individuals collected across California, Oregon and Washington with eight nuclear microsatellites and two chloroplast markers. Principal Coordinate Analysis and Bayesian clustering revealed a limited amount of hybridization of the native R. ursinus with the exotic R. armeniacus and R. pensilvanicus, as well as cultivated varieties. Genetic distances between these hybrids and their offspring indicated that both R. ursinus × R. armeniacus and R. ursinus × R. pensilvanicus produced a mix of apomictic and sexual seeds, with sexual seeds being more viable. Although neither of these hybrid types is currently considered invasive, they model the early stages of evolution of new invasive lineages, given the potential for fixed heterosis and the generation of novel genotypes. The hybrids also retain the ability to increase their fitness via sexual recombination and natural selection. Mixed reproductive systems such as those described here may be an important step in the evolution of asexual invasive species.  相似文献

Physiological responses to light availability and soil flooding on Lindera melissifolia (Walt.) Blume were studied. Shrubs were grown under 70, 37 or 5% of full sunlight with either 0, 45, or 90 d of soil flooding. We measured leaf photosynthetic rate (PN) to test the hypothesis that soil flooding reduces P N in L. melissifolia following shrub acclimation to low light availability. Results showed that light availability and soil flooding interacted to affect P N. In the 0 d and 45 d flooding regimes (flood water removed 36–39 d prior to measurement), P N was similar between shrubs receiving 70% or 37% light, and these shrubs had 147% greater P N than shrubs receiving 5% light. Shrubs receiving 90 d of soil flooding had similar low rates of area-based P N regardless of light level. Similar P N between 0 d and 45 d flooded shrubs indicated physiological recovery following removal of flood water.  相似文献

Four populations of Pratylenchus penetrans did not differ (P > 0.05) in their virulence or reproductive capability on Lahontan alfalfa. There was a negative relationship (r = -0 .7 9 ) between plant survival and nematode inocula densities at 26 ± 3 C in the greenhouse. All plants survived at an inoculum level (Pi) of 1 nematode/cm³ soil, whereas survival rates were 50 to 55% at 20 nematodes/cm³ soil. Alfalfa shoot and root weights were negatively correlated (r = - 0.87; P < 0.05) with nematode inoculum densities. Plant shoot weight reductions ranged from 13 % at Pi 1 nematode/cm³ soil to 69% for Pi 20 nematodes/cm³ soil, whereas root weight reductions ranged from 17% for Pi 1 nematode/cm³ soil to 75% for Pi 20 nematodes/cm³ soil. Maximum and minimum nematode reproduction (Pf/Pi) for the P. penetrans populations were 26.7 and 6.2 for Pi 1 and 20 nematodes/cm³ soil, respectively. There were negative correlations between nematode inoculum densities and plant survival (r = 0.84), and soil temperature and plant survival (r = -0 .7 8 ). Nematode reproduction was positively correlated to root weight (r = 0.89).  相似文献

Asexual reproduction s. l. is widespread in plants and also a basic reproductive mechanism in bryophytes. Today, three types of asexual reproduction are recognized: (1) the asexual reproduction s. str. by regeneration from ± specialized caducous organs (leaves, leaf apices, shoots, branches, bulbils) and by production of specialized propagules (gemmae, protonemal brood cells, tubers), (2) fragmentation of plants, resp. part of plants into ± unspecialized fragments, and (3) clonal reproduction (cloning). The latter occurs in bryophytes by protonema decay, by disintegration of modules, resp. formation of ramets (dividuals, “daughter plants”) that leads to self-cloning or forced-cloning of parts of the gametophyte (shoots, stoloniferous and rhizomatous axes, rhizoid wicks, basiscopic innovation plants). Clonal reproduction (cloning), in former time scarcely noted, gained great interest within the last decade mainly in vascular plants showing clonal growth. This reproduction mechanism is thought to be a keystone factor for asexual reproduction, habitat colonization and habitat maintenance. Species which reproduce clonally are able to colonize and maintain habitats in an effective way by the so-called “consequent vegetative multiplication”. The review presents an overview of the current state of knowledge of asexual reproduction types in bryophytes, with a focus on fragmentation and clonal reproduction (cloning), the mechanisms of habitat colonization and habitat maintenance, which all are of important significance in the dynamic processes of development of bryophyte populations.  相似文献

Variations in offspring production according to feeding strategies or food supply have been recognized in many animals from various ecosystems. Despite an unusual trophic structure based on non‐photosynthetic primary production, these relationships remain largely under‐studied in chemosynthetic ecosystems. Here, we use Rimicaris shrimps as a study case to explore relationships between reproduction, diets, and food supply in these environments. For that, we compared reproductive outputs of three congeneric shrimps differing by their diets. They inhabit vents located under oligotrophic waters of tropical gyres with opposed latitudes, allowing us to also examine the prevalence of phylogenetic vs environmental drivers in their reproductive rhythms. For this, we used both our original data and a compilation of published observations on the presence of ovigerous females covering various seasons over the past 35 years. We report distinct egg production trends between Rimicaris species relying solely on chemosymbiosis—R. exoculata and R. kairei—and one relying on mixotrophy, R. chacei. Besides, our data suggest a reproductive periodicity that does not correspond to seasonal variations in surface production, with substantial proportions of brooding females during the same months of the year, despite those months corresponding to either boreal winter or austral summer depending on the hemisphere. These observations contrast with the long‐standing paradigm in deep‐sea species for which periodic reproductive patterns have always been attributed to seasonal variations of photosynthetic production sinking from the surface. Our results suggest the presence of an intrinsic basis for biological rhythms in the deep sea, and bring to light the importance of having year‐round observations in order to understand the life history of vent animals.  相似文献

The invasion by three different Utah populations of Pratylenchus neglectus (UTI, UT2, UT3) was similar in single and interplantings of ''Lahontan'' alfalfa and ''Fairway'' crested wheatgrass at 24 ñ 3 °C. Population UT3 was more pathogenic than UT1 and UT2 on both alfalfa and crested wheatgrass. Inoculum density was positively correlated with an invasion by P. neglectus. Invasions by UT3 at all initial populations (Pi) exceeded that of UT1 and UT2 for both single and interplanted treatments. The greatest reductions in shoot and root weights of alfalfa and crested wheatgrass were at a Pi of 8 P. neglectus/cm³ soil. Pi was negatively correlated with alfalfa and crested wheatgrass shoot and root growth and nematode reproduction. The reproductive factor (Rf) for UT3 exceeded that of UT1 and UT2 in single and interplantings at all inoculum levels. There were no differences in Rfin the Utah populations in single or interplantings. A nematode invasion increased with temperature and was greatest at 30 °C. Population UT3 was more pathogenic than UT1 and UT2 and reduced shoot and root growth at all soil temperatures. Populations UT1 and UT2 reduced shoot and root growth at 20-30 °C. Soil temperature was negatively correlated with shoot and root growth and positively correlated with nematode reproduction. Reproduction of UT3 exceeded that of UT1 and UT2 at all soil temperatures.  相似文献

In order to assess the importance of sexual and asexual reproduction during the life history of Scirpus mariqueter, its reproductive and growth characters were concurrently examined along an elevational gradient (from low elevation to high elevation). The proportions of flowering shoot and inflorescence mass, seed : flower ratio and seed weight were used to quantify the investment in sexual reproduction. The proportions of current-year shoot and rhizome mass were used to quantify the investment in asexual reproduction, and the proportion of corm mass was used for growth, respectively. It was found that vegetative propagation predominated at low elevation, whereas sexual reproduction predominated at high elevation; and that sexual reproduction increased with declining asexual reproduction along the gradient. The results suggest that asexual reproduction is relatively favored in the early life stage, whereas sexual reproduction is favored when the population becomes mature and aged, probably because of the functional differentiation between the two reproductive types. Sexual productive characters (i.e. the proportions of flowering shoot and inflorescence mass) were negatively correlated to both growth and asexual reproductive characters along the gradient, indicating there might exist some trade-offs among growth, sexual and asexual reproduction during the life history. However, no obvious pattern was found between asexual reproductive characters and growth characters along the elevational gradient, possibly because of the varied relationships between them at different life stages. The variations in sexual and asexual reproduction in the species and the relationship between them are thought to be of great significance for local population growth, species persistence and evolution.  相似文献

Ecological theories of sexual reproduction assume that sexuality is advantageous in certain conditions, for example, in biotically or abiotically more heterogeneous environments. Such theories thus could be tested by comparative studies. However, the published results of these studies are rather unconvincing. Here, we present the results of a new comparative study based exclusively on the ancient asexual clades. The association with biotically or abiotically homogeneous environments in these asexual clades was compared with the same association in their sister, or closely related, sexual clades. Using the conservative definition of ancient asexuals (i.e., age >1 million years), we found eight pairs of taxa of sexual and asexual species, six differing in the heterogeneity of their inhabited environment on the basis of available data. The difference between the environmental type associated with the sexual and asexual species was then compared in an exact binomial test. The results showed that the majority of ancient asexual clades tend to be associated with biotically, abiotically, or both biotically and abiotically more homogeneous environments than their sexual controls. In the exploratory part of the study, we found that the ancient asexuals often have durable resting stages, enabling life in subjectively homogeneous environments, live in the absence of intense biotic interactions, and are very often sedentary, inhabiting benthos, and soil. The consequences of these findings for the ecological theories of sexual reproduction are discussed.  相似文献

Non-vascular plants rely on sperm to cross the distance between male and female reproductive organs for fertilization and sexual reproduction to occur. The majority of non-vascular plants have separate sexes, and thus, this distance may be a few millimetres to many metres. Because sperm need water for transport, it has been assumed that sperm lifespans are short and that this type of sexual reproduction limits the expansion of non-vascular plants in terrestrial environments. However, little data is available on the lifespan of sperm in non-vascular plants, and none is available for bryophytes, the group thought to have first colonized terrestrial habitats. Here, we documented the lifespan of sperm of Pohlia nutans, collected from a geothermal spring''s area, and tested the effects of variation under environmental conditions on this lifespan. Surprisingly, 20 per cent of the sperm were still motile after 100 h, and sperm lifespan was not significantly affected by temperature variation between 22 and 60°C. Lifespan was significantly affected by sperm dilution and temperatures above 75°C. These results suggest the need to reconsider the importance of sperm motility in bryophyte fertilization.  相似文献

In many insect taxa, there is a well‐established trade‐off between flight capability and reproduction. The wing types of Acridoidea exhibit extremely variability from full length to complete loss in many groups, thus, provide a good model for studying the trade‐off between flight and reproduction. In this study, we completed the sampling of 63 Acridoidea species, measured the body length, wing length, body weight, flight muscle weight, testis and ovary weight, and the relative wing length (RWL), relative flight muscle weight (RFW), and gonadosomatic index (GSI) of different species were statistically analyzed. The results showed that there were significant differences in RWL, RFW, and GSI among Acridoidea species with different wing types. RFW of long‐winged species was significantly higher than that of short‐winged and wingless species (p < .01), while GSI of wingless species was higher than that of long‐winged and short‐winged species. The RWL and RFW had a strong positive correlation in species with different wing types (correlation coefficient r = .8344 for male and .7269 for female, and p < .05), while RFW was strong negatively correlated with GSI (r = −.2649 for male and −.5024 for female, and p < .05). For Acridoidea species with wing dimorphism, males with relatively long wings had higher RFW than that of females with relatively short wings, while females had higher GSI. Phylogenetic comparative analysis showed that RWL, RFW, and GSI all had phylogenetic signals and phylogenetic dependence. These results revealed that long‐winged individuals are flight capable at the expense of reproduction, while short‐winged and wingless individuals cannot fly, but has greater reproductive output. The results support the trade‐off between flight and reproduction in Acridoidea.  相似文献
