The accessory reproductive glands of male mammals contribute the bulk of the secretions in which spermatozoa are transported to the female tract during copulation. Despite their morphological diversity, and the chemical complexity of their products, little is known about the possible effects of sexual selection upon these glands in mammals. Here we consider the seminal vesicles and prostate glands in a sample of 89 species and 60 genera representing 8 Orders of mammals. The sizes of the accessory glands are analysed in relation to body weight and testes weight. Both the seminal vesicles size and prostate size (corrected for body weight) correlate positively with relative testes size in this sample; this finding remains highly significant after application of procedures to correct for possible phylogenetic biases in the data set. The accessory reproductive glands are also significantly larger in those mammals which have large relative testes sizes, and in which the likelihood of sperm competition is greatest. These results support the hypothesis that sexual selection has played an important role in the evolution of the mammalian prostate gland and seminal vesicles.  相似文献

Most heavy metals and industrial chemicals such as nicotine and lead cause harm to the reproduction process through a decrease in sperm motility, fertilization process, and sperm binding to the oocyte. Salvia officinalis L. (sage) has been reported to enhance serum testosterone levels and other certain biochemical enzymes. Thus, the current study is aimed at evaluating the potential health benefits of S. officinalis L. methanol extract on lead and nicotine hydrogen tartrate-induced sperm quality degeneration in male rats and also identifying some of the non-polar volatile bioactive compounds that might be attributed to the bioactivity of S. officinalis extract using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In the study, fifty-four mature male albino rats of about 220–250 g [were divided randomly and equally into 9 groups (n=6)]. Sperm quality degeneration was induced through the oral administration of 1.5 g/L of lead acetate in drinking water or peritoneal injection of 0.50 mg/kg (animal weight) nicotine hydrogen tartrate for sixty days. Two doses (200 & 400 mg/kg b.w.) of S. officinalis L. were used. The rats were anesthetized after the experimental period and then sacrificed. Blood samples were collected while the epididymis, testicle, and accessory sex organs (prostates and seminal vesical) were taken for histopathological studies. Twelve major compounds were identified through the GC/MS analysis of S. officinalis L. methanol extract. Lead and nicotine toxicity had a great effect on the rats’ sperm quality causing a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the quantity of sperm and sperm motility as well as an upsurge in the abnormalities of the sperm and a reduction in the length & diameter of seminiferous tubules and size & weight of sexual organs (accessory sex glands, epididymis, and testis). The administration of S. officinalis L. methanol extract, however, had a positive impact on the sexual organ weights, semen quality & quantity, and rats’ fertility, thus, ameliorating the adversative effects of both lead and nicotine. Further evaluation and isolation of the bioactive components are recommended as potential drug leads.  相似文献

The ventral prostates, dorsolateral prostates, coagulating glands, seminal vesicles and/or ampullary glands were bilaterally removed from adult male hamsters. Removal of these glands did not affect the fertilization rate and cleavage of the embryos at 48 h post coitum (p.c.). Air-dried preparations of the embryos showed a delay in cleavage at 72 h p.c. and a significant number of degenerated embryos was also found in females mated with males from which all the male accessory sex glands had been removed. A significant implantation loss was also observed at 122 h p.c. The results suggest that, in the golden hamster, removal of the male accessory sex gland causes a slower cleavage rate in embryonic development and a significant embryonic loss during pregnancy.  相似文献

Molecules in male seminal fluid transferred to female insects during mating can have potent effects on their subsequent sexual and reproductive behaviour. Like many other tephritids, female Queensland fruit flies (Bactrocera tryoni) typically have diminished sexual receptivity after their first mating. Also, copulations of females that do remate tend to be shorter than those of virgins. We here find that virgin females injected with small doses (0.1, 0.2 or 0.5 male equivalents) of extracts from the male reproductive tract accessory tissues, which consist of male accessory glands, ejaculatory apodeme and ejaculatory duct (AG/EA/ED), have diminished receptivity and short copula duration very similar to naturally mated females. In contrast, virgin females injected with saline or with high doses of AG/EA/ED (1 or 2 male equivalents) that likely exceed the range of natural variation retain the higher levels of sexual receptivity and longer copulations of un-injected virgins. We conclude that reduced sexual receptivity and shorter copulations of mated female Q-flies are mediated by products in the male seminal fluid derived from the male reproductive tract accessory tissues.  相似文献

A major component of sexual maturation in the male rat is a progressive decline in serum concentrations of 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (3α-diol) and a concomitant increase in testicular testosterone biosynthesis and secretion. Chronic administration of synthetic luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) or luteinizing hormone (LH)/human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to immature male rats has been shown to result in a delay in sexual maturation as evidenced by decreased sex accessory gland weights and altered testicular testosterone production. We have examined the postulate that such treatments may either reverse or retard the normal developmental pattern of serum testosterone and 3α-diol concentrations. Chronic in vivo treatment of 28 day old immature male rats for 2 weeks with daily injections of either 0.5 μg of LHRH, 1.0 μg of LHRH, or 30 μg of LH was found to result in significant reductions in weights of the seminal vesicles and ventral prostate glands and diminutions in serum testosterone concentrations. Serum content of 3α-diol was either unchanged or slightly elevated in the LHRH treated animals and increased significantly in the LH treated animals. These data suggest that either a reversal of or retardation in the normal developmental pattern of serum testosterone and 3α-diol content has been achieved in the immature male rat by chronic LHRH or LH treatment.  相似文献

The antiandrogenic effect of levorin on immature castrated rats treated with exogenic testosterone was studied. In a dose of 200 mg/kg levorin lowered the cholesterin blood levels in the rats, inhibited the testosterone-induced increase in RNA concentration in the ventral and dorsal prostate and the seminal vesicles and to a less extent suppressed the growth of the accessory sexual glands. However, the antiandrogenic effect was observed with the use of levorin in the dose producing a pronounced toxic action evident from death of a part of the animals and a marked decrease in the animal body weight. This fact casts doubt on specificity of the levorin effect. Apparently, in high doses levorin impairs metabolism as a whole which cannot but affect the response of the sexual glands to administration of testosterone.  相似文献

Estrus female behind holed transparent partition produced sexual motivation and sexual arousal in males. It was manifested in behavioral changes (an increase in time spent near the partition) and the testosterone level augmentation in blood. Female mice were exposed to stress (1 h/day restraint) in the last week of gestation. Prenatal stress was shown to decrease the blood corticosterone level as well as to diminish sexual motivation and sexual arousal in adult male mice. Estrus female exposure produced a lesser behavioral response and a lesser testosterone level augmentation. No changes in weight of testicles, seminal vesicles or adrenal glands were found, but preputial gland weight increased. In prenatally stressed males, a female preference decrease and a male preference increase were revealed in the partner preference test. These data suggest that prenatal stress decreases sexual motivation in males and leads to clear predisposition to homosexuality, although it does not produce complete inversion of sexual orientation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Using an in vitro radiochemical assay, juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis by corpora allata was screened during the first 2 weeks of adult maturation in both male and female migratory locusts, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.). The patterns of change of glandular activities in the sexes were different, but the overall rates of JH production were similar. Testisectomy did not appear to affect corpus allatum activity, male sexual behaviour, or yellow coloration. Removal of the testes together with the seminal vesicle and the accessory glands resulted in a disturbance of the pattern of JH biosynthesis, but had no effect on sexual behaviour or coloration. These observations are discussed in relation to available evidence on JH-mediated sexual events in the adult.  相似文献

Perinatal exposure to the synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES), affects the structure of both male and female reproductive systems. Changes may also occur in the levels of steroid hormone receptors. Cytosolic and nuclear androgen and estrogen receptor levels (expressed per mg DNA) from the sex accessory glands of male BALB/c mice exposed neonatally to DES were analyzed by exchange assays. Neonatal DES exposure caused significant decreases in: (1) cytosolic androgen and cytosolic and nuclear estrogen receptor levels in the anterior prostate and (2) cytosolic estrogen receptor levels in the ventral prostate. A significant increase was seen in the cytosolic estrogen receptor levels in the seminal vesicle. Significant decreases in cytosolic protein levels occurred in all DES-exposed glands.  相似文献

The beetle family Lampyridae (fireflies) encompasses ~100 genera worldwide with considerable diversity in life histories and signaling modes. Some lampyrid males use reproductive accessory glands to produce spermatophores, which have been shown to increase female lifetime fecundity. Sexual dimorphism in the form of neotenic and flightless females is also common in this family. A major goal of this study was to test a hypothesized link between female flight ability and male spermatophore production. We examined macroevolutionary patterns to test for correlated evolution among different levels of female neoteny (and associated loss of flight ability), male accessory gland number (and associated spermatophore production), and sexual signaling mode. Trait reconstruction on a molecular phylogeny indicated that flying females and spermatophores were ancestral traits and that female neoteny increased monotonically and led to flightlessness within multiple lineages. In addition, male spermatophore production was lost multiple times. Our evolutionary trait analysis revealed significant correlations between increased female neoteny and male accessory gland number, as well as between flightlessness and spermatophore loss. In addition, female flightlessness was positively correlated with the use of glows as female sexual signal. Transition probability analysis supported an evolutionary sequence of female flightlessness evolving first, followed by loss of male spermatophores. These results contribute to understanding how spermatophores have evolved and how this important class of seminal nuptial gifts is linked to other traits, providing new insights into sexual selection and life-history evolution.  相似文献

Sperm competition is a pervasive selective force in evolution, shaping reproductive anatomy, physiology and behaviour. Here, we present comparative evidence that varying sperm competition levels account for variation in the male reproductive anatomy of rodents, the largest and most diverse mammalian order. We focus on the sperm-producing testes and the accessory reproductive glands, which produce the seminal fluid fraction of the ejaculate. We demonstrate a positive association between relative testis size and the prevalence of within-litter multiple paternity, consistent with previous analyses in which relative testis size has been found to correlate with sperm competition levels inferred from social organization and mating systems. We further demonstrate an association between sperm competition level and the relative size of at least two accessory reproductive glands: the seminal vesicles and anterior prostate. The size of the major product of these glands-the copulatory plug-is also found to vary with sperm competition level. Our findings thus suggest that selection for larger plugs under sperm competition may explain variation in accessory gland size, and highlight the need to consider both sperm and non-sperm components of the male ejaculate in the context of post-copulatory sexual selection.  相似文献

Production of secretion in the accessory reproductive glands of male Melanoplus sanguinipes has been examined by electrophoresis and radiolabelling. The secretion of each group of tubules (long hyaline glands, white glands, short hyaline glands, and seminal vesicles) can be resolved into more than 20 protein bands and includes several glycoproteins and, in the long hyaline and white glands only, lipoproteins. Each group of tubules has a characteristic pattern of synthesis and accumulation of proteins; that is, specific proteins appear in the secretion at particular times during sexual maturation. In allatectomized insects, the long hyaline glands accumulate very little secretion; the white glands and short hyaline glands accumulate about one-third the normal amount; and accumulation in the seminal vesicles is not affected by the operation. Allatectomy exerts its effect by inhibiting the synthesis of particular proteins. The observations are discussed in terms of juvenile hormone-specific protein synthesis in the accessory reproductive glands.  相似文献

The sexual maturation in the male house musk shrew, Suncus murinus, was investigated by weighing gonads, accessory sexual organs and various other organs, and measuring testosterone concentrations in the plasma from birth to 50 days of age. The histological and histochemical studies of the testis were also carried out. Testicular weight increased markedly from 10 days of age. On 15 days of age, the activity of delta 5-3 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) was detected in Leydig cells. In accordance with an increase of HSD activity, the concentrations of plasma testosterone raised rapidly from 15 days of age and reached a peak on Day 30. Growth of prostate glands and seminal vesicles showed a sigmoidal pattern and their significant growth began from Day 25. Sperms were detected first in the seminiferous tubules on Day 28, and most tubules were filled with many sperms on Day 33. From these results, the beginning of sexual maturation, i.e. puberty, of the male shrew is considered to be around Day 25. The weight gain of testes, accessory sexual organs and the body became slower on Day 40. The male animal of Day 40 could mate and impregnate the female. Therefore, the male shrew seems to attain to the sexual maturity between days 35 and 40.  相似文献

The fine structure of the seminal vesicle and reproductive accessory glands was investigated in Bittacidae of Mecoptera using light and transmission electron microscopy. The male reproductive system of Bittacidae mainly consists of a pair of testes, a pair of vasa deferentia, and an ejaculatory sac. The vas deferens is greatly expanded for its middle and medio-posterior parts to form a well-developed seminal vesicle. The seminal vesicle is composed of layers of developed muscles and a mono-layered epithelium surrounding the small central lumen. The epithelium is rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and secretes vesicles and granules into the central lumen by merocrine mechanisms. A pair of elongate mesodermal accessory glands opens into the lateral side of the seminal vesicles. The accessory glands are similar to the seminal vesicle in structure, also consisting of layers of muscle fibres and a mono-layered elongated epithelium, the cells of which contain numerous cisterns of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and a few Golgi complexes. The epithelial cells of accessory glands extrude secretions via apocrine and merocrine processes. The seminal vesicles mainly serve the function of secretion rather than temporarily storing spermatozoa. The sperm instead are temporarily stored in the epididymis, the greatly coiled distal portion of the vas deferens.  相似文献

Effects of 2-bromo-alpha-ergocryptine (CB 154) on plasma prolactin, luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone levels, accessory reproductive glands, and spermatogenesis were studied in lambs during puberty. 18 lambs born during normal lambing season (February and 10 lambs born during the nonlambing period (October) and received a daily injection of CB 154 (2 gm) from the 10th week after birth until the 21st week. Treatment resulted in a highly significant (p less than .001) decrease in the concentration of plasma prolactin, but did not affect LH or testosterone levels. There was no marked decrease in testis weight in the treated animals and the establishment of spermatogenesis was not delayed by the treatment. However, there was a significant decrease in the weight of the seminal vesicles (p less than .01) and in their fructose concentration (p less than .01 and p less than .05). These results indicate that prolactin may play a role in the secretory activity of these glands in the male lamb.  相似文献

The accessory reproductive glands of the male desert locust were studied with the electron microscope from the time of adult emergence until full sexual maturity was attained (10 days). Observations on the changes in the nucleus and the cytoplasm of the glandular epithelium, particularly those organelles involved in the elaboration of cell secretions, were made during the maturation of the accessory glands. Cells of gland 16 (the functional seminal vesicle) exhibit numerous ribosomal aggregates, have a concentration of mitochondria along their luminal surface, and show some secretory activity, even at the time of adult emergence. On the other hand, all other accessory glands show very little development of the secretory apparatus (rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, polyribosomes, Golgi elements, elaborate mitochondria, etc.) until after the fifth adult day. These changes parallel changes in the secretory activity of the adult corpus allatum; and it is suggested that the corpus allatum hormone regulates the maturation of the truly glandular accessory glands of the locust, but not that of the functional vesicle.  相似文献

Summary Two male sex accessory glands of the mouse, seminal vesicle and coagulating gland, were compared with the aim of relating differences in the morphology of organelles to the kinetics of the secretory process. The epithelial cells of the two glands were assessed by morphometric analysis, cytochemical staining, and electron-microscopic autoradiography after administration of a labeled amino acid. The rough endoplasmic reticulum of the seminal vesicle comprised narrow parallel cisternae, while that of the coagulating gland was greatly distended and occupied a much larger percentage of the cytoplasmic volume. Radioactively labeled products were secreted much more rapidly in the seminal vesicle than in the coagulating gland. The primary point of difference in kinetics of intracellular transport between the two glands was in exit of material from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The more rapid drainage of the rough endoplasmic reticulum may be related to its relatively greater membrane surface density and lesser internal volume. In contrast, similarities in size and cytochemical staining in the Golgi apparatus of the two glands were accompanied by similar kinetics of intracellular transport of secretory protein through this organelle.  相似文献

Anatomically the male reproductive organs of Hemiechinus auritus collaris are of considerable interest and present a unique pattern of arrangement of different glands. The testes are inguinal and a true scrotum is absent. A pair of accessory glands, the seminal vesicles, are situated dorsal to the bladder. A pair of obviously lobulated glands, ventral to the bladder, represent the internal prostate and a pair of compact glands situated outside the pelvis in para-anal position the external prostate. The Cowper's gland and the gland of ampulla are absent. The present studies also concern enzymes of the phosphatase group, including both specific and non-specific phosphatases, in the testes and the sex accessory glands during both active and inactive periods in this insectivore.  相似文献

The cytological changes occurring in the gonadotropic cells of the anterior lobe of the pituitary in 30 male rats and 30 male gerbils after administration of alpha-chlorohydrin were compared with those occurring following bilateral gonadectomy. A decline in the weights of testes and accessory sex glands and inhibited spermatogenesis were noted in rats and gerbils following alpha-chlorohydrin administration. Alpha-cholorohydrin changed the appearance of the delta-basilphils, cell cytoplasm showed fine granulation and vacuolization, and castration vacuoles appeared in many delta-basiphils of the anteroir lobe of the pituitary. The compound brought about transient changes resembling those of castration in the anterior lobe of the pituitary of male rats and gerbils. In gerbils, there was also a marked decrease in the number of acidophils. The results show that alpha-chlorohydrin exerts its effects on androgen-dependent structures, e.g., seminal vesicles, ventral prostrate, epididymides, and perineal complex.  相似文献

A systematic histochemical study of the complex carbohydrates of the lateral prostate and seminal vesicle of the guinea pig has been made. The complex carbohydrates of the guinea pig male accessory sex glands were partially characterized by various conventional carbohydrate histochemical methods including periodic acid-Schiff, selective periodate oxidation-Schiff reaction, Alcian blue staining at pH 2.5 and 1.0, and high iron diamine. The results indicated that neutral glycoconjugates with 1,2-glycol groups and sialic acids were present in the luminal border and apical cytoplasm of the glandular cells, basement membrane and connective tissue in the lamina propria of the lateral prostate. Similar patterns were demonstrated in the seminal vesicle except that there were relatively fewer or no neutral carbohydrates in the apical cytoplasm of the vesicular epithelial cells. The epithelial basement membrane and connective tissue at the epithelial-stromal interface of both glands were rich in acidic and sulphated glycosaminoglycans. Partial characterization by bovine testicular hyaluronidase indicated the presence of chondroitin sulphates in the lamina propria of the glands.  相似文献
