Batesian mimicry, in which a palatable organism resembles an unpalatable model, is widespread among taxa. Batesian mimics can be classified based on their level of accuracy (inaccurate or accurate). Using data on defensive strategies in more than 1000 species of spiders I investigated whether inaccurate myrmecomorphy is ancestral to accurate myrmecomorphy. I classified 233 myrmecomorphic species into four accuracy levels based on morphology, from poor inaccurate mimics to very accurate ones. I found that myrmecomorphy has evolved independently in 16 families and 85 genera. On the family‐level phylogeny, the occurrence of myrmecomorphy is confined mainly to families branching later on the tree, from the RTA clade. On the generic‐level phylogenies in Corinnidae and Salticidae, myrmecomorphy is not only of derived origin. Estimated ancestral state was non‐mimetic in Salticidae and poor inaccurate myrmecomorphy in Corinnidae. Thus, inaccurate myrmecomorphic spider mimics seem rather ancestral to accurate but additional analysis on species‐level phylogenies is needed to support this conclusion. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 97–111. 相似文献

The Dispersal Syndrome hypothesis remains contentious, stating that apparently nonrandom associations of fruit characteristics result from selection by seed dispersers. We examine a key assumption under this hypothesis, i.e. that fruit traits can be used as reliable signals by frugivores. We first test this assumption by looking at whether fruit colour allows birds and primates to distinguish between fruits commonly dispersed by birds or primates. Second, we test whether the colours of fruits dispersed by primates are more contrasting to primates than the colours of bird‐dispersed fruits, expected if fruit colour is an adaptation to facilitate the detection by seed dispersers. Third, we test whether fruit colour has converged in unrelated plant species dispersed by similar frugivores. We use vision models based on peak sensitivities of birds’ and primates’ cone cells. We base our analyses on the visual systems of two types of birds (violet and ultraviolet based) and three types of primates (trichromatic primates from the Old and the New Worlds, and a dichromatic New World monkey). Using a Discriminant Function Analysis, we find that all frugivore groups can reliably discriminate between bird‐ and primate‐dispersed fruits. Fruit colour can be a reliable signal to different seed dispersers. However, the colours of primate‐dispersed fruits are less contrasting to primates than those of bird‐dispersed fruits. Fruit colour convergence in unrelated plants is independent of phylogeny and can be better explained by disperser type, which supports the hypothesis that frugivores are important in fruit evolution. We discuss adaptive and nonadaptive hypotheses that can potentially explain the pattern we found. 相似文献

Specimens of Euproops sp. (Xiphosura, Chelicerata) from the Carboniferous Piesberg quarry near Osnabrück, Germany, represent a relatively complete growth series of 10 stages. Based on this growth sequence, morphological changes throughout the ontogeny can be identified. The major change affects the shape of the epimera of the opisthosoma. In earlier stages, they appear very spine-like, whereas in later stages the bases of these spine-like structures become broader; the broadened bases are then successively drawn out distally. In the most mature stage known, the epimera are of trapezoidal shape and approach each other closely to form a complete flange around the thoracetron (=fused tergites of the opisthosoma). These ontogenetic changes question the taxonomic status of different species of Euproops, as the latter appear to correspond to different stages of the ontogenetic series reconstructed from the Piesberg specimens. This means that supposed separate species could, in fact, represent different growth stages of a single species. It could alternatively indicate that heterochrony (=evolutionary change of developmental timing) plays an important role in the evolution of Xiphosura. We propose a holomorph approach, i.e., reconstructing ontogenetic sequences for fossil and extant species as a sound basis for a taxonomic, phylogenetic, and evolutionary discussion of Xiphosura. 相似文献

Recent population expansion and increased migration linked to urbanization are assumed to be eroding the genetic structure of human populations. We investigated change in population structure over three generations by analysing both demographic and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data from a random sample of 2351 men from 22 Iranian populations. Potential changes in genetic diversity (theta) and genetic distance (F(ST)) over the last three generations were analysed by assigning mtDNA sequences to populations based on the individual's place of birth or that of their mother or grandmother. Despite the fact that several areas included cities of over one million inhabitants, we detected no change in genetic diversity, and only a small decrease in population structure, except in the capital city (Tehran), which was characterized by massive immigration, increased theta and a large decrease in F(ST) over time. Our results suggest that recent erosion of human population structure might not be as important as previously thought, except in some large conurbations, and this clearly has important implications for future sampling strategies. 相似文献

Fig choice by the pollinator of a gynodioecious fig: selection to rush,or intersexual mimicry? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Due to selection to maximise the benefits accrued, conflicts of interest exist between mutualists. An extreme conflict occurs between gynodioecious fig trees and their pollinating wasps. Female wasps, which are required for pollination, cannot reproduce in female figs and should be selected to avoid them. We investigate fig choice in Liporrhopalum tentacularis , pollinator of Ficus montana . We show that entry rates are independent of fig sex and diameter, with wasps instead entering the first fig encountered (although significant between-tree differences in entry rates to figs were observed). This suggests that wasps are unable to discriminate between the sexes because of selection for inter-sexual fig mimicry. In conjuction with data on other species pairs, these findings imply that that the resolution of the conflict is ultimately under the tree's control, with the level of mimicry evolving in response to both the propensity of wasps to discriminate and the costs of them doing so. 相似文献

Males of the midge Chironomus plumosus fly solely to mate. They maintain station for long periods in moving air. Females patrol in search of males and, after receiving a spermatophore, fly to oviposition sites. The requirements of flight in males and females are therefore fundamentally different. Females are larger than males, on average, so these differences could stem from scaling rules governing the geometry of space. The same explanation might apply to flight differences within the sexes and even to peculiarities of flight architecture in C. plumosus compared to other flying animals. In other words, might flight design be accounted for entirely by mechanical constraints without recourse to natural selection?
To test this hypothesis, the power output of C. plumosu was measured as size-specific muscle mass. Contrary to expectation, little evidence was found of scaling effects in this measure of power. Despite its being among the smallest of animals to fly, C. plumosus turns out to have the largest mass of flight muscle, relative to body size, yet found among animals. Differences both between C. plumosus and other species and within C. plumosus are, in general, more readily accounted for by the requirements of the mating system within the viscous universe encountered by small flying animals. We conclude that it is natural selection rather than mechanical constraint that is the primary influence determining the architecture of flight in this small animal. 相似文献

From some life-history traits, avian egg size can be postulated as potentially affected by climate change. In this paper, we present and discuss the potential effect of mean temperature in the breeding season on egg size of the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio). During the 1971–2002 study period, egg volume of the red-backed shrike decreased significantly, birds arrived at the breeding site significantly earlier, and arrival date was correlated with the earliest first egg date. To our knowledge, we present the first evidence that avian egg size decreased significantly in a long-term study. However, we do not have experimental manipulations in support of our data and we can only conclude that the decrease in egg volume in the studied population might result as a consequence of a number of factors, including changes in temperature, as well as in food supply. Therefore climate change effects on a birds life-history traits can be more complex than just the simple direct effect of temperature.Communicated by F. Bairlein 相似文献

Background and Aims
The maternal gametophytic calyptra is critical for moss sporophyte development and ultimately sporogenesis. The calyptra has been predicted to protect the sporophyte apex, including the undifferentiated sporogenous region and seta meristem, from desiccation. We investigate the hypothesis that this waterproofing ability is due to a waxy cuticle. The idea that moss calyptrae are covered by a cuticle has been present in the literature for over a century, but, until now, neither the presence nor the absence of a cuticle has been documented for any calyptra. Methods
The epidermis of the calyptra, leafy gametophyte and sporophyte sporangia of the moss Funaria hygrometrica were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Thicknesses of individual cuticle layers were quantified and compared statistically. The immunochemistry antibody (LM19) specific for pectins was used to locate cell wall material within the cuticle.Key Results
A multi-layered cuticle is present on the calyptra of F. hygrometrica, including layers analogous to the cuticular layer, cell wall projections, electron-lucent and electron-dense cuticle proper observed in vascular plants. The calyptra rostrum has a cuticle that is significantly thicker than the other tissues examined and differs by specialized thickenings of the cuticular layer (cuticular pegs) at the regions of the anticlinal cell walls. This is the first documentation of cuticular pegs in a moss. Conclusions
The calyptra and its associated cuticle represent a unique form of maternal care in embryophytes. This organ has the potential to play a critical role in preventing desiccation of immature sporophytes and thereby may have been essential for the evolution of the moss sporophyte. 相似文献9.
Aim The transferability of species distribution models requires that species show climatic equilibrium throughout their entire distribution area. We test this assumption for the case of the spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta, a large carnivore that has shifted its distribution over the last 100,000 years from a widespread Eurasian and African range to its current geographical distribution, restricted to the Sub‐Saharan areas of the African continent. Location Western Eurasia and Africa. Methods The current realized distribution of C. crocuta was estimated using presences and reliable absences as well as climatic, land‐cover and anthropic variables as predictors. The potential distribution was estimated using presences and a set of pseudo‐absences selected from localities outside climatically suitable localities, with only climatic variables serving as predictors. The current potential distribution was transferred to the Last Interglacial period (126,000 yr bp ) using the palaeoclimatic data yielded by the GENESIS 2 general circulation model, and validated with European fossil data. Generalized linear models were used on all occasions. Results Climatic variables are able to predict the current distribution of the species with high accuracy. The geographical projection of this model indicates that the species is distributed over almost all of its potential suitable area, which allows us to suppose that the current distribution of this species is in climatic equilibrium. However, the time transference of model predictions for the western Eurasian region reveals almost no suitable conditions for hyenas, despite the widespread presence of C. crocuta fossil remains on this continent during the Last Interglacial period. Main conclusions Our results indicate that, even when model results suggest a climatic equilibrium for a species distribution, the time transferability of such models does not necessarily provide realistic results. This occurs because the current geographical range does not allow estimations of all of the environmental requirements of a species. Therefore, any model trained with current data risks underestimating the potential suitable environmental and geographical range for species in a new area or time period. 相似文献

A mutation endowing herbicide resistance is often found to induce a parallel morphological or fitness penalty. To test whether such 'cost' of resistance to herbicides is expressed through lower resource acquisition, changes in resource allocation, or both, is of ecological significance. Here, we analysed 12 morphological traits in 900 plants covering three herbicide resistance mutations at genes AUX1 , AXR1 and AXR2 in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana . Comparing these 2,4-D herbicide-resistant homozygous (RR) and heterozygous (RS) plants to homozygous susceptible (SS) plants, this analysis estimates the dominance level of the resistance allele on morphology. We also demonstrated that the herbicide resistance cost was primarily expressed as a change in resource acquisition (62.1-94% of the analysed traits). Although AUX1 , AXR1 and AXR2 genes act in the same metabolic pathway of auxin response, each resistance factor was found to have its own unique signature in the way the cost was expressed. Furthermore, no link was observed between the absolute fitness penalty and the respective modifications of resource acquisition and/or resource allocation in the resistant plants. These results and their implications for herbicide resistance spread and establishment are discussed. 相似文献

This paper addresses the question of how to understand the relationship between Cultural Evolutionary Science (CES) and the social sciences, given that they coexist and both study cultural change. I argue that CES is best understood as having a unificatory or integrative role between evolutionary biology and the social sciences, and that it is best characterized as a bridge field; I describe the concept of a bridge field and how it relates to other non-reductionist accounts of unification or integration used in the philosophy of science literature. 相似文献

Eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) exhibit a distinct thermal preference that might be related to the thermal optimum for physiological performance. Sprint speed and treadmill endurance of S. undulatus were insensitive to body temperature in the ranges of 28–38°C and 25–36°C, respectively. Both locomotor and digestive performances are optimized at the preferred body temperature of S. undulatus, but thermoregulatory behavior is more closely related to the thermal sensitivity of digestive performance than that of locomotor performance. 相似文献

Seedbanks are expected to buffer populations against disturbances, such as fire, thatcould alter the genetic composition of smaller, ephemeral adult populations. However, seedling genotypes may be influenced by the spatially heterogeneous nature of both theseedbank and the disturbance (for example, germination may vary with local disturbance)and also by selection acting on germination and post-germination performance. We usedmicrosatellite-DNA surveys of seedlings emerging from the soil-stored seedbanks ofGrevillea macleayana after wildfire to compare diversity and spatial structurein seedlings and adults, and through resampling of the seedling data set, to determinewhether the resultant adult population reflected the effects of selection or randomseedling mortality. The large post-fire seedling cohorts captured the full allelicdiversity of the pre-fire adult population. However, we found a mismatch in the genotypicstructure of adults and seedlings. Seedlings displayed larger heterozygous deficits thanadults; however, over the ensuing 11 years, seedling heterozygosity eventually matchedvalues for the pre-fire adults. Increasing heterozygosity among adults has generally beenattributed to heterosis and/or reduction in Wahlund effects via self-thinning.Resampling of early post-fire seedlings to generate samples of equivalent size tosurvivors at 11 years showed that increases in heterozygosity must be driven by selectionfavouring outcrossed seed. This finding is important in an evolutionary context but alsohas implications for the restoration of natural or managed populations where a seedbank isa viable source of recruits. 相似文献

The epigean amphipod Gammarus lacustris possessed a rate of oxygen uptake (MO2) three times greater that of the hypogean amphipod
Stygobromus sp. While much of the difference between these two species could be attributed to different feeding regimes, the
hypogean amphipod still exhibited a lower rate of metabolism than the epigean species. This suggests that there can be both
a genetic and an environmental (reduced food availability and/or hypoxia) component to the reduced metabolism characteristic
of many hypogean animals. The results of this study have re-emphasised the pitfall of making species comparisons without knowledge
of the extent of physiological variation within a species.

Hybridization, natural or artificial, is considered disadvantageous for species biodiversity when it threatens the population integrity of endangered species. Frequently, studies investigating whether hybridization poses a legitimate risk to rare species are based on genetic data obtained in molecular biology laboratories. In this study, we used field research to approach the problem that hybridization could cause for the viability of a population of a rare species and to be able to propose the most appropriate initial conservation strategy. Specifically, using the model genus Antirrhinum, the reproductive barriers between the rare A. pulverulentum and its common congener A. litigiosum have been analysed under the reproductive isolation index (RI). A. pulverulentum had a high value of total RI, indicating that there are barriers to gene flow from A. litigiosum towards this species, and also had a high value for the intrinsic RI, reflecting a low inherent capacity for production of hybrid plants; in addition, the possibility of successful backcrosses between this species with hybrids produced from A. litigiosum ovules were low, given the high intrinsic RI of A. litigiosum. These data indicate the current existence of strong and permanent barriers to hybridization between the two species, suggesting that hybridization does not seem to be a serious problem for the conservation of A. pulverulentum in the studied population, nor for the near future. This study shows how the RI index can provide useful information for conservation purposes and proposes different management recommendations. 相似文献

Summary It has been known for many years that when a wing disc ofDrosophila is bisected, and the fragments cultured in adult females, regulation occurs and either a complete disc is regenerated or the fragment is duplicated. We have investigated how this regeneration process occurs. To establish which cells contribute to the regenerate, and thus determine if regeneration is the result of epimorphic regulation, fragments of discs, after culture in an adult for one to five days, were exposed to3H-thymidine to label replicating cells. Imaginal discs, both whole and as regenerating fragments, undergo some DNA replication which is distributed throughout the disc, but cut discs frequently show clusters of labelled cells around the wound, indicating that regeneration is probably epimorphic. 相似文献

The possibility to use acetylcholinesterase as biomarker of exposure to deltamethrin insecticide in the honeybee, Apis mellifera were considered. Joined actions of deltamethrin and pirimicarb (carbamate), alone or in association (dual treatment), were investigated on AChE activity in surviving and dead honeybees in order to test its reliability as biomarker. All treatments induced a reduction in tissue AChE activity in dead bees. In surviving bees, deltamethrin treatment induced an important increase of AChE activity that is not abolished by pirimicarb treatment. The analysis of AChE forms revealed an increase in the soluble form in surviving and dead bees and an increase of the membrane form in surviving bees. No direct effect of deltamethrin on soluble and membrane AChE was observed in vitro. The important increase in AChE activity in response to deltamethrin, not altered by pirimicarb treatment, suggests that AChE activity could represent a robust biomarker specific to deltamethrin exposure in living bees. 相似文献

The theory of adaptive senescence, or phenoptosis (“altruistic suicide” of the organism), implies that mutations enhancing mortality growth with age (“senescence genes”) can be favored by selection under some circumstances, although the nature of these circumstances and the frequency of their occurrence are not clear. Here I demonstrate by means of computer simulation that senescence genes can spread in the population’s gene pool via the mechanism of kin selection if two conditions are met. First, the population must have high viscosity (low intermixing), which provides positive correlation between spatial proximity of individuals and their relatedness, an important precondition for kin selection. Second, prior to acquisition of the senescence genes, there must be a sufficiently fast decline in the reproductive potential with age, while viability should decrease slower or remain constant. These conditions are probably met in some territorial and social species with severe competition for social rank and mating partners. 相似文献
