Zooplankton was surveyed in a tropical lagoon system of the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in high tide, December (1998) and low tide, March 1999 (northerlies season). Zooplankton biomass was measured, zooplankters were counted, and copepods were identified and quantified. Despite the fact that both months were influenced by winds from the North, they showed a different salinity gradient which developed a particular structure of the zooplankton community. Biomass tended to be accumulated in certain areas apparently because of the high residence time of water in Chelem, the forcing effect of the northerlies, and of the tidal current. Biomass values suggest a relatively high secondary production when compared with other systems of the Yucatan Peninsula. The distribution of the copepods Acartia lilljeborgii and A. tonsa is related to saline conditions and tidal flow. The overall faunistic and hydrologic data suggest that even during a single climatic season, the zooplankton community shows strong changes due to mesoscale hydrological processes.  相似文献

Phototrophic Biofilms on Ancient Mayan Buildings in Yucatan, Mexico   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Buildings at the important archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah, Mexico, are being degraded by microbial biofilms. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and chlorophyll a analyses indicated that phototrophs were the major epilithic microorganisms and were more prevalent on interior walls than exterior walls. Culture and microscopical techniques showed that Xenococcus formed the major biomass on interior surfaces, but the stone-degrading genera Gloeocapsa and Synechocystis were also present in high numbers. Relatively few filamentous algae and cyanobacteria were detected. The fatty acid analysis also showed that complex biofilms colonize these buildings. Circular depressions observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on stone and stucco surfaces beneath the biofilm corresponded in shape and size to coccoid cyanobacteria. SEM images also demonstrated the presence of calcareous deposits on some coccoid cells in the biofilm. Phototrophic biofilms may contribute to biodegradation by (1) providing nutrients that support growth of acid-producing fungi and bacteria and (2) active “boring” behavior, the solubilized calcium being reprecipitated as calcium carbonate. Many of the monuments of the Mayan civilization are suffering deterioration caused by environmental factors (high temperatures and relative humidities), increasing contamination from natural and anthropogenic sources, and by the action of micro- and macro-biological communities. Archaeological sites and historical monuments in the Mayan area were constructed with different limestones which offer different resistances to degradation by the various types of contamination. Two different sampling sites were chosen at the archaeological site of Uxmal in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria and different fungi were isolated and classified taxonomically. The other archaeological site chosen for this study was the fortress of Tulum, located at the side of the Caribbean Sea and exposed to chloride of marine spray and sand erosion. In this case, heterotrophic aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, cyanobacteria and fungi were isolated from the four sampling areas selected. In both archaeological sites crust deposits were observed by using light microscopy, SEM and ESEM. Surface analyses were made by means of EDAX and electron microprobe. Possible mechanisms of stone decay, based on the type of microorganisms isolated, the physico-chemical characteristics of the constructional materials and environmental factors are discussed.  相似文献

One year of field data on the Yucatan, Mexico, North Coast hypersalinepools and salterns revealed extreme alkalinity, salinity andtemperature conditions, hypoxia and in some instances, totaldesiccation. The four locations were similar in water temperature, nitrites, and phosphates, but differed in salinity, oxygen content, water depth, nitrates, ammonia, silicates, carbonates, sulfates, and pH. The dominant multicellular organism in these hypersalineecosystems is Artemia, the brine shrimp. Artemia abundance andpopulation dynamics were significantly correlated with specificenvironmental conditions, most often water temperature, salinity, and oxygen concentration. The different schedules of Artemiaand cyst production at each location suggest habitat partitioningamong the brine shrimp populations across the North Coast ofthe Yucatan Peninsula. Our results provide an ecological basisfor rational management of these endangered hypersaline ecosystems.  相似文献

Background

Chagas disease is a vector-borne parasitic disease of major public health importance. Current prevention efforts are based on triatomine vector control to reduce transmission to humans. Success of vector control interventions depends on their acceptability and value to affected communities. We aimed to identify opportunities for and barriers to improved vector control strategies in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

Methodology/principal findings

We employed a sequence of qualitative and quantitative research methods to investigate knowledge, attitudes and practices surrounding Chagas disease, triatomines and vector control in three rural communities. Our combined data show that community members are well aware of triatomines and are knowledgeable about their habits. However, most have a limited understanding of the transmission dynamics and clinical manifestations of Chagas disease. While triatomine control is not a priority for community members, they frequently use domestic insecticide products including insecticide spray, mosquito coils and plug-in repellents. Families spend about $32 US per year on these products. Alternative methods such as yard cleaning and window screens are perceived as desirable and potentially more effective. Screens are nonetheless described as unaffordable, in spite of a cost comparable to the average annual spending on insecticide products.

Conclusion/Significance

Further education campaigns and possibly financing schemes may lead families to redirect their current vector control spending from insecticide products to window screens. Also, synergism with mosquito control efforts should be further explored to motivate community involvement and ensure sustainability of Chagas disease vector control.  相似文献

A study was done of the relationship between hydrographic variables and the composition, abundance, community structure and biomass spectrums of coastal phytoplankton at scales greater than 100 km on the Yucatan Peninsula (SE Gulf of Mexico). This was done during the season of greatest environmental instability in the region, the northwind season (late fall to winter). Samples were collected at stations in the west (Campeche), north (Yucatan), and east (Quintana Roo) zones of the Peninsula. Measurements were taken of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate) and chlorophyll a, and samples were taken for phytoplankton analysis. The hydrographic results showed the Campeche zone as having the lowest salinity (<35 psu) values, as well as the highest inorganic nutrient and chlorophyll a values, all of which are related to continental water contributions. The Yucatan zone had the lowest temperatures and the lowest inorganic nutrient values, indicating influence from the Yucatan Current and the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 159 phytoplankton species were identified, dominated by diatoms (>80%) and dinoflagellates. Phytoplankton exhibited greater concentration, richness, equitability and diversity in Campeche, while the lowest community structure values were had in the Quintana Roo zone. The ordination analysis demonstrated that the dominant genera were the diatoms Chaetoceros, Pseudonitzschia and Thalassionema. The biomass spectrums exhibited the lowest slope in environments of higher heterogeneity, with Campeche being the most disturbed and heterogeneous zone and Quintana Roo that with the least heterogeneity.  相似文献

A total of 20 plants belonging to different genera (Acalypha, Ageratum, Ambrosia, Bidens, Blechum, Caesalpinia, Calea, Carlowrightia, Croton, Eugenia (2), Furcraea, Stenandrium, Tephrosia, Trichilia (2), Randia (3), and Vitex) were selected from native flora of the Yucatan peninsula. All plants selected were collected and separated in to leaves, stems and roots. These were then extracted with ethanol and their crude extracts (54) were evaluated against Alternaria tagetica, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizopus sp. using the filter paper disc diffusion assay. Results lead to the selection of 33 crude extracts active against at least one of the target strains, which were assessed to determine their ability to inhibit the mycelial growth of the pathogenic fungi in a second antifungal assay. The results of this assay indicated that extracts from the roots of Croton chichenensis were the most promising, with a wide activity spectrum against all pathogens tested in both assays with inhibition percentages of greater than 60%. Furthermore, extracts from leaves of Ambrosia hispida, Trichilia minutiflora, and roots of Acalypha gaumeri were able to cause growth inhibition against two or three pathogen strains (≥50%). Studies of these active extracts should be continued at different levels. In general, results revealed a good bioactive potential of the flora from the Yucatan peninsula to produce metabolites with potential applications as botanical pesticides in the near future.  相似文献

Extracts from 48 marine macroalgae species (17 Chlorophyta, 8 Phaeophyta and 23 Rhodophyta) from the coasts of Yucatan and Quintana Roo (Mexico) were evaluated for antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was measured with the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrasyl) method, and the phenolic content of each extract were also evaluated. All species exhibited a DPPH radical scavenging activity, and three species (Avrainvillea longicaulis, Chondria baileyana and Lobophora variegata) demonstrated great antioxidant potential with very low oxidation index EC50 (1.44 ± 0.01, 2.84 ± 0.07 and 0.32 ± 0.01 mg mL−1, respectively), significantly equivalent to EC50 of some commercial antioxidants such as α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, BHA and BHT. Moreover, extracts of the most active species exhibited reducing activities, superoxide anion radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that some macroalgae from the Yucatan peninsula have a great antioxidant potential which could be considered for future applications in medicine, food production or cosmetic industry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A survey in a major Mexican city (Merida) and three rural communities was conducted to generate information regarding the size and structure of the owned-dog populations and people's opinions about the dogs and how they took care of them. Household characteristics and dog population size, health and reproductive issues were compared between the two kinds of communities: urban and rural. A telephone survey was conducted in Merida city whereas personal interviews were used in the rural communities. Local veterinarians were also interviewed to evaluate their influence on the dog populations in Merida city. The ratio of people to dogs was 3.4:1 in the city, and 1.7:1 to 4.6:1 in the different rural communities. In general it was more common to find a dog-owning household in the city of Merida (72.8%) than in the rural areas (63.6%, 65.5% and 71.1%), and in the city more households had adequate fences to restrain dogs. Larger families were more likely to own a dog than small families. Households of medium socio-economic status had a significantly higher probability of owning a dog than households of low or high socio-economic status. Of the dogs in the city, 90.1% were vaccinated against rabies compared with 62.3% of the dogs in the rural communities. Most animals were intact; the frequency of neutering/spaying was 3.1% in Merida and 1.8% in the rural communities. Few private veterinary practitioners were involved in the control of dog overpopulation. It is concluded that dogs are popular pets both in urban and rural Yucatan. People's opinions about dogs and the level of supervision varied with socio-economic status, and people in the city provided better food, shelter and preventive medicine. The veterinary practitioners did little to promote the control of dog breeding or to reduce the relinquishing of unwanted dogs in the city. Better client education and the promotion of sterilization of pets at low cost would improve the situation.  相似文献

Background

Use of plant resources and ecosystems practiced by indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica commonly involves domestication of plant populations and landscapes. Our study analyzed interactions of coexisting wild and managed populations of the pitaya Stenocereus pruinosus, a columnar cactus used for its edible fruit occurring in natural forests, silviculturally managed in milpa agroforestry systems, and agriculturally managed in homegardens of the Tehuacán Valley, Mexico. We aimed at analyzing criteria of artificial selection and their consequences on phenotypic diversity and differentiation, as well as documenting management of propagules at landscape level and their possible contribution to gene flow among populations.

Methods

Semi-structured interviews were conducted to 83 households of the region to document perception of variation, criteria of artificial selection, and patterns of moving propagules among wild and managed populations. Morphological variation of trees from nine wild, silviculturally and agriculturally managed populations was analyzed for 37 characters through univariate and multivariate statistical methods. In addition, indexes of morphological diversity (MD) per population and phenotypic differentiation (PD) among populations were calculated using character states and frequencies.

Results

People recognized 15 pitaya varieties based on their pulp color, fruit size, form, flavor, and thorniness. On average, in wild populations we recorded one variety per population, in silviculturally managed populations 1.58 ± 0.77 varieties per parcel, and in agriculturally managed populations 2.19 ± 1.12 varieties per homegarden. Farmers select in favor of sweet flavor (71% of households interviewed) and pulp color (46%) mainly red, orange and yellow. Artificial selection is practiced in homegardens and 65% of people interviewed also do it in agroforestry systems. People obtain fruit and branches from different population types and move propagules from one another. Multivariate analyses showed morphological differentiation of wild and agriculturally managed populations, mainly due to differences in reproductive characters; however, the phenotypic differentiation indexes were relatively low among all populations studied. Morphological diversity of S. pruinosus (average MD = 0.600) is higher than in other columnar cacti species previously analyzed.

Conclusions

Artificial selection in favor of high quality fruit promotes morphological variation and divergence because of the continual replacement of plant material propagated and introduction of propagules from other villages and regions. This process is counteracted by high gene flow influenced by natural factors (pollinators and seed dispersers) but also by human management (movement of propagules among populations), all of which determines relatively low phenotypic differentiation among populations. Conservation of genetic resources of S. pruinosus should be based on the traditional forms of germplasm management by local people.  相似文献

This study investigates evidence of changes and continuities in ancient Maya violence and warfare in inland northwest Yucatan, Mexico from the Middle Preclassic (600–300 BC) to the Postclassic (AD 1050–1542) through bioarchaeological analysis of cranial and projectile trauma. It is hypothesized that the frequency of violence increases before the Classic Maya collapse and remains high during the Postclassic period. It is also hypothesized that the flat, open terrain was conducive to warfare and resulted in higher trauma frequencies than in other parts of the Maya area. Results show that the frequency of cranial trauma decreases before the Classic collapse and increases in the Postclassic, partially matching the expected chronological trends. The frequency of cranial trauma does not differ significantly from other Maya regions but the pattern does: for all periods, males have more healed injuries than females and they are concentrated on the left side of the anterior of the skull. Some injuries appear to be from small points hafted in wooden clubs. In addition, projectile trauma is evident in a scapula with an embedded arrowhead tip, the first such case reported in a Maya skeleton. Overall, these results suggest greater reliance on open combat and less on raids in this region compared with other parts of the Maya area, possibly due to the flat, open terrain, though the identification of perimortem trauma in both women and men indicates surprise raids on settlements were also practiced. Aqueous leachates and a CHCl3-MeOH (1:1) extract of roots of Stauranthus perforatus showed a significant phytotoxic effect on Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Echinochloa crus-galli. Bioassay-directed fractionation of the active organic extract led to the isolation and characterization of ten secondary metabolites, which included two pyranocoumarins [xanthyletin (1) and 3-(1',1'-dimethylallyl)-xanthyletin (2)], four furanocoumarins [chalepensin (3), ammirin (4), chalepin (5) and 2'-isopropyl-psoralene (6)], two lignans [asarinin (7) and fargesin (8)], one sesquiterpene [4,5-epoxi-beta-caryophyllene (9)], and one alkamide [pellitorine (10)]. From these compounds, 2'-isopropyl-psoralene (6) or anhydromarmesin, is reported for the first time as a natural product, whereas compounds 4-10 are now reported as being present in S. perforatus. Metabolites 1, 3-5 and 10 caused significant inhibition of radicle growth of A. hypochondriacus and E. crus-galli. Furthermore, in a greenhouse experiment the decomposition of the leaves and roots in the soil had a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of weeds. The allelopathic action of the decomposition of roots was evident up to the sixth week of the experiment. The effect of leaves was comparable to that of DPCA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate), a commercial herbicide. Finally different concentrations of Stauranthus root powder were combined with maize kernels and used to feed corn weevil. The treatments resulted in high mortality of this insect.  相似文献

Weaving hats withjipi,Carludovica palmata (Cyclanthaceae) has built the local economy and cultural identity for the people of Becal, in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. They obtain most material from cultivated sources, weave in man-made caves, and market the goods to commercial centers. BecauseJipi does not appear to deplete the soil, they do not need to clear more land for sustainable production. Although weaving traditionally served as the main source of income and social activity in Becal, interest in weaving is declining as the town modernizes. Although profits gained from weaving add to family earnings, because of the many hands through which the hat passes, this income remains low compared to the final selling prices. Thus, many who have the opportunity to pursue other careers are doing so. However, for rural communities, without other earning options, weaving may provide an economically and environmentally advantageous way to use the land.  相似文献

A quantitative comparative assessment was used to decide the best route for constructing a gas pipeline in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. Two alternative routes were assessed. The focus of the analysis was to develop an integrated assessment that would help minimize land degradation by economic development activities, taking into account the impact on physical and biological resources, and on human population. The ecological impact, the potential risk of an accident, and the cost for both alternatives were considered. The significance of the impact depends on the relative importance and quantity of components to be affected by the pipeline along both routes. In this work, a method for the ecological assessment of the alternative routes was used and an index was used for risk assessment considering the possibilities of pipeline damage by local people, the amount of agricultural activities, inflexion points, and topography along the route. The analysis indicated that the ecological impact, risk of accident, and cost are lower by constructing the pipeline along the recommended route. Population density along the alternative route was higher than on the recommended one. The results of the analysis were submitted to the Mexican Environmental Ministry and the pipeline project was approved in 1997.  相似文献

This study tests the ecological and physico-chemical effect of sharp density boundaries of meromictic lakes. The investigation was carried out in Nohoch Hol, an anchialine meromictic cenote situated 2.0 km inland from the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. In situ physico-chemical parameters were recorded with a water quality datalogger at depth intervals of 0.5 m. In addition, seven water samples for determination of nutrients, bacterioplankton and phytoplankton in the water column were obtained using SCUBA. Bacterioplankton and phytoplankton densities are low, with concentrations consistent with the oligo- to ultraoligotrophic status of Nohoch Hol indicated by the low nutrient concentrations. The phytoplankton was dominated by the chlorophyte Scenedesmus. Maximum concentrations of bacterio- and phytoplankton were found at 10.0 m depth, the top of the chemolimnion. The similarity analysis clustered the samples in three defined groups: (a) the mixolimnion, (b) the mid- and bottom of the chemolimnion and the monimolimnion, and (c) the top of the chemolimnion. The principal component analysis explained over 85% of the total variance in two components (PC). PC1 was related to turbidity and the aggregation of the chlorophytes at the top of the chemolimnion. PC2 was related to dissolved oxygen and the accumulation of filamentous and total bacteria also at the top of the chemolimnion. The top of the chemolimnion acts as a boundary within the water column to the exchange of dissolved and particulate matter between the mixo and the monimolimnion and as an ecological zone with a crucial role in the biogeochemistry of Nohoch Hol.  相似文献
