The relationship between an isolate of Schistosoma bovis from Iringa, Tanzania, and various species of the host snail genus Bulinus from East Africa was studied using the total cercarial production per 100 exposed snails over a period of 4 weeks following patency as an index of the compatibility. All populations of Bulinus forskalii and B. africanus tested exhibited a high level of susceptibility while the populations of B. truncatus and B. globosus tested were either refractory or of low to moderately low susceptibility. All populations of B. abyssinicus, B. canescens, B. nasutus and B. tropicus tested were refractory. It is suggested that B. africanus is the most important host snail for S. bovis in East Africa, that B. forskalii at least locally may contribute significantly to the transmission and that B. truncatus and B. globosus only play a limited role in the transmission.  相似文献

The results from the infection experiments with Schistosoma intercalatum from Cameroun and from Za?re and the intermediate hosts, belonging to B. forskalii and B. globosus, could be divided into groups according to the degree of compatibility with the schistosomes. This was indicated by the total cercariae production per 100 exposed snails (TCP/100 exp. snails). B. forskalii from Kinshasa, Za?re were the snails which were most compatible with S. intercalatum from Cameroun, and B. globosus populations tested were refractory. The TCP/100 exposed snails was about 300,000 for the populations of B. forskalii from Kinshasa compared with the low production for B. forskalii from Cameroun of 125,000. B. wrighti from South Arabia produced 155,000 cercariae per 100 exposed snails. B. cernicus from Mauritius could be separated into two types according to the compatibility with S. intercalatum from Cameroun, the TCP/100 exposed snails was 31,000 and 267,000, respectively. B. globosus from Kinshasa, Za?re, was very compatible with S. intercalatum from Za?re and the TCP/100 exposed snails was very high, and 300,000. An albino strain of B. globosus from Rhodesia was the most compatible snail having a TCP/100 exposed snails of 2.4 million cercariae. Other strains of B. globosus from Cameroun and Togo were refractory and less susceptible. It was also possible to infect B. africanus and the two tested populations from Kenya and Tanzania, producing 15,000 and 179,000 cercariae per 100 exposed snails, respectively.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To ascertain the annual incidence of diabetes requiring treatment with insulin in children and adolescents aged 0-19 years in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during a 10 year period from 1 January 1982 to 31 December 1991. DESIGN--Prospective registration at a major urban hospital of all patients with newly diagnosed diabetes who were resident in Dar es Salaam. SETTING--Muhimbili Medical Centre, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. PATIENTS--86 patients: 45 male, 41 female. RESULTS--The annual incidence of juvenile diabetes for both sexes was 1.5 per 100,000 population aged 0-19 years (95% confidence interval 1.3 to 1.7). Incidence per 100,000 population per year increased with age: 0.6 (0.0 to 0.13) in the age group 0-4 years, 0.5 (0.3 to 0.7) at 5-9 years, 2.2 (1.8 to 2.6) at 10-14 years, and 3.4 (2.9 to 3.9) at 15-19 years. CONCLUSION--Juvenile diabetes mellitus is fairly rare in sub-Saharan Africa. If environmental factors such as infection and material deprivation were important determinants of insulin dependent diabetes in Africans, as they may be in Europeans, much higher rates would have been expected unless genetic factors possibly exert a protective role. The eightfold greater incidence in African Americans than in Tanzanians may be related to greater genetic admixture in African Americans with people from countries in Europe with a high incidence.  相似文献

Schistosoma bovis from Morocco was used in infection experiments with several populations of Bulinus truncatus. The snails from Libya, Malawi, Morocco and Senegal were very compatible with the schistosome since the infection rates were approximately 90%, the mortality was low, and a very high production of cercariae, approximately 1.2 million per 100 exposed snails, was observed. Only a very few B. truncatus (2n = 36) from Rhodesia became infected. B. permembranaceus and B. forskalii were refractory.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To measure age and sex specific mortality in adults (15-59 years) in one urban and two rural areas of Tanzania. DESIGN--Reporting of all deaths occurring between 1 June 1992 and 31 May 1995. SETTING--Eight branches in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania''s largest city), 59 villages in Morogoro rural district (a poor rural area), and 47 villages in Hai district (a more prosperous rural area). SUBJECTS--40,304 adults in Dar es Salaam, 69,964 in Hai, 50,465 in Morogoro rural. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Mortality and probability of death between 15 and 59 years of age (45Q15). RESULTS--During the three year observation period a total of 4929 deaths were recorded in adults aged 15-59 years in all areas. Crude mortalities ranged from 6.1/1000/year for women in Hai to 15.9/1000/year for men in Morogoro rural. Age specific mortalities were up to 43 times higher than rates in England and Wales. Rates were higher in men at all ages in the two rural areas except in the age group 25 to 29 years in Hai and 20 to 34 years in Morogoro rural. In Dar es Salaam rates in men were higher only in the 40 to 59 year age group. The probability of death before age 60 of a 15 year old man (45Q15) was 47% in Dar es Salaam, 37% in Hai, and 58% in Morogoro; for women these figures were 45%, 26%, and 48%, respectively. (The average 45Q15s for men and women in established market economies are 15% and 7%, respectively.) CONCLUSION--Survivors of childhood in Tanzania continue to show high rates of mortality throughout adult life. As the health of adults is essential for the wellbeing of young and old there is an urgent need to develop policies that deal with the causes of adult mortality.  相似文献

Chaetogaster limnaei, an oligochaete was always found infesting Bulinus (Phy.) globosus, B.(B.) forskalii and Lymnaea natalensis in Bo, Sierra Leone, living below the shell or embedded in the mucus of the foot. The worms had no preference for snails with trematode infection. The population was highest in the dry season when fewer snails were infected by trematodes. This is suggested to be a result of the protection the worms give to snails against invading miracidia.  相似文献

Background

The use of larval source management is not prioritized by contemporary malaria control programs in sub-Saharan Africa despite historical success. Larviciding, in particular, could be effective in urban areas where transmission is focal and accessibility to Anopheles breeding habitats is generally easier than in rural settings. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a community-based microbial larviciding intervention to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania.

Methods and Findings

Larviciding was implemented in 3 out of 15 targeted wards of Dar es Salaam in 2006 after two years of baseline data collection. This intervention was subsequently scaled up to 9 wards a year later, and to all 15 targeted wards in 2008. Continuous randomized cluster sampling of malaria prevalence and socio-demographic characteristics was carried out during 6 survey rounds (2004–2008), which included both cross-sectional and longitudinal data (N = 64,537). Bayesian random effects logistic regression models were used to quantify the effect of the intervention on malaria prevalence at the individual level. Effect size estimates suggest a significant protective effect of the larviciding intervention. After adjustment for confounders, the odds of individuals living in areas treated with larviciding being infected with malaria were 21% lower (Odds Ratio = 0.79; 95% Credible Intervals: 0.66–0.93) than those who lived in areas not treated. The larviciding intervention was most effective during dry seasons and had synergistic effects with other protective measures such as use of insecticide-treated bed nets and house proofing (i.e., complete ceiling or window screens).

Conclusion

A large-scale community-based larviciding intervention significantly reduced the prevalence of malaria infection in urban Dar es Salaam.  相似文献

Between November 1998 and October 2000, freshwater snails were collected monthly from the highveld and lowveld areas of Zimbabwe to determine the occurrence of larval trematodes. A total of 13,789 snails, representing ten species, were collected from 21 sites and 916 (6.6%) harboured patent trematode infections. Eight morphologically distinguishable types of cercariae were identified. Bulinus tropicus had the highest overall prevalence of infection (13.1%). The echinostome was the most common type of cercaria recovered, contributing 38.2% of all infections. Schistosoma cercariae were recovered mainly from the highveld and comprised 8.0% of all infections. Amphistome cercariae contributed 37.6% of all infections and were recorded from both the highveld and lowveld areas with a peak prevalence occurring during the post-rainy period (March-May). The main intermediate host for amphistomes was B. tropicus. Infections in B. globosus, B. forskalii and Biomphalaria pfeifferi with amphistome cercariae are new records for Zimbabwe.  相似文献

The offspring from hybridization experiments between Schistosoma intercalatum, Cameroun (intermediate host Bulinus forskalii) and S. intercalatum, Za?re (intermediate host B. globosus) was investigated. Reciprocal crosses between the two forms were performed. F1- and F2-miracidia developed in both parental intermediate hosts. The minimum prepatent period was 24 days at 26 degrees C, an average of the prepatent periods for the two parental strains. The total cercariae production per 100 exposed snails decreased sharply from 121 000 for the parental strain from Cameroun in B. forskalii to 21 000 and 5000 from the F1- and F2-generations, respectively. The figures for S. intercalatum, Za?re in B. globosus were 270 000, 134 000 and 3000, respectively. F1- and F2-generations were from the cross between males from Cameroun and females from Za?re. The viablility of the four cross-breeding experiments carried out (two with each combinations of the parental strains) were low. It was only possible to obtain F2-cercariae. No miracidia were hatched from eggs produced by the F2-gerneation.  相似文献

The susceptibility of 13 different B. forskalii strains from Zaire, Cameroun, Gabon, Senegal, Rhodesia and Tanzania and B. reticulatus wrighti Aden has been tested to infection with Schistosoma intercalatum from Cameroun. The most common prepatent period was 23-28 days. B. forskalii from Zaire, Cameroun and Gabon were excellent intermediate hosts with infection rates varying from 59-0 to 97-4% and with very low death rates, 0-28-4%. The strains from Senegal and Rhodesia had infection rates from 50-0 to 58-4%. B forskalii from Tanzania was refractory. 53-0% of the exposed B. reticulatus wrighti was infected. The total cercariae production per snail varied from 1000-11000. The duration of the infection varied from 8 to 174 days.  相似文献

Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to score mobilities of seven different enzymes in species of Bulinus from North and West Africa. An account of the intra- and inter-population variation observed was given. Based on the data obtained it was suggested that enzymic data should be used as taxonomic characters in parallel with morphological and anatomical characters. It is suggested that enzymic characters could be used to place taxa into synonymy if the data are collected in such a way that one can write up an enzyme profile for the single individual. The nine taxa of Bulinus known to occur in North and West Africa were revised, the taxon B. jousseaumei was synonymized with B. globosus , and the two taxa B. guernei and B. rohlfsi were synonymized with B. truncatus. As a result of the revision only six species could be recognized as valid from the area, these being B. forskalii, B. globosus, B. senegalensis, B. truncatus, B. ugandae and B. umbilicatus. Finally, some enzymic characters are suggested that may be used for a reliable identification of these morphologically very difficult taxa.  相似文献

Background

Successful malaria vector control depends on understanding behavioural interactions between mosquitoes and humans, which are highly setting-specific and may have characteristic features in urban environments. Here mosquito biting patterns in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania are examined and the protection against exposure to malaria transmission that is afforded to residents by using an insecticide-treated net (ITN) is estimated.

Methods

Mosquito biting activity over the course of the night was estimated by human landing catch in 216 houses and 1,064 residents were interviewed to determine usage of protection measures and the proportion of each hour of the night spent sleeping indoors, awake indoors, and outdoors.

Results

Hourly variations in biting activity by members of the Anopheles gambiae complex were consistent with classical reports but the proportion of these vectors caught outdoors in Dar es Salaam was almost double that of rural Tanzania. Overall, ITNs confer less protection against exophagic vectors in Dar es Salaam than in rural southern Tanzania (59% versus 70%). More alarmingly, a biting activity maximum that precedes 10 pm and much lower levels of ITN protection against exposure (38%) were observed for Anopheles arabiensis, a vector of modest importance locally, but which predominates transmission in large parts of Africa.

Conclusion

In a situation of changing mosquito and human behaviour, ITNs may confer lower, but still useful, levels of personal protection which can be complemented by communal transmission suppression at high coverage. Mosquito-proofing houses appeared to be the intervention of choice amongst residents and further options for preventing outdoor transmission include larviciding and environmental management.  相似文献

Schistosoma curassoni has been recovered from cattle in northern Nigeria. Rectal scrapings of 90 cows slaughtered at the Kano abattoir, Kano, Nigeria during March and April 1986 revealed a prevalence of 7.8% S. bovis and 2.2% S. curassoni. Further examination of the mesenteric and rectal veins of 502 cows showed that the overall prevalence of schistosomiasis was 31.1%. Local Bulinus globosus were infected successfully in the laboratory with s. bovis miracidia.  相似文献

The diet of the cockle Anadara antiquata L. was studied along Dar es Salaam coast during the N-E Monsoon season. No zooplankton were found in the 80 cockle guts examined. 27 phytoplankton genera were identified, an indication of wide phytophagy. Members of classes Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Pyrophyceae and Prasnophyceae were very prevalent in the diet. Scenedesmus, Chlamydomonas, Palmeria, Exuviella, and Coscinodiscus showed the highest recurrence frequencies per gut.  相似文献

The pattern of transmission of human schistosomiasis was studied in Amagunze Village, eastern Nigeria, during 1986-1987. The prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium in 119 schoolboys aged 5-12 years was 79%. The geometric mean of intensity of infection was 49 eggs/10 ml urine and the frequency of visible haematuria was 25.2%. No S. mansoni infections were demonstrated. A marked seasonality in population density of Bulinus truncatus, B. forskalii and Biomphalaria pfeifferi was demonstrated with reduced densities during the late rainy and early dry seasons. Schistosoma sp. infected B. truncatus were found in the late dry and early rainy seasons in 2 out of 7 major human water contact sites studied. Seasonality and focality of transmission of S. haematobium and its high endemicity in the area were thus demonstrated.  相似文献

Utricularia inflexa Forsk. growing in a shallow lake near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania was found to be abundantly associated with blue-green algae and other microorganisms, though blue-green algae were not found in the lake water. The epiphytes occurred both on the outer surfaces of the macrophyte and inside its traps. Seven genera of the Cyanophyta were observed, amongst which Anabaena was the most abundantly and consistently associated. Both epiphytes on the outer surfaces of the macrophyte and those inside mature traps fixed nitrogen in situ. Mature parts of the macrophyte fixed nitrogen at higher rates than immature parts, indicating the former was associated with a greater abundance of nitrogen fixers. The Utricularia-Cyanophyta association showed a nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) rate of 2012 nmol C2H4 g–1 dry weight h–1 or, in terms of lake area, of 4 500 nmol C2H4 m–2 h–1. The relative contributions of blue-green algae and bacteria were not determined. It is proposed that the association may involve a degree of physiological interdependence and that the association has potential as a biofertilizer for rice.Based on an M.Sc. thesis by G. In some populations of the African butterfly, Acraea encedon, there are two kinds of females, one producing offspring in a normal 1:1 sex ratio, the other producing females only; in other populations the sex ratio is apparently normal. All-female broods had hitherto been mainly associated with populations in which field sampling revealed an excess of females. The all-female brood trait is described from a population at Dar es Salaam which field sampling suggested was normal, and this indicates that the trait may be much more widespread and common than had previously been supposed. This discovery also extends the known distribution of the trait across Africa from Sierra Leone to eastern Tanzania. The butterfly is also a polymorphic Müllerian mimic of Danaus chrysippus, which is a highly unusual phenomenon as Müllerian mimicry is almost invariably monomorphic. The relative frequencies of two corresponding colour forms of the two species of butterflies at Dar es Salaam adds support to the hypothesis that they are indeed Mullerian mimics. The results of breeding experiments suggest that the polymorphic forms in Acraea encedon are allelic with dominance.  相似文献

Hypolimnas misippus, a sexually dimorphic, nymphalid butterfly with a very variable female, was sampled for 41 consecutive months, along with its supposed model, Danaus chrysippus (Danaidae), at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Hypolimnas larvae collected in the field were reared to compare their range of variation with that of the wild adult population. Some breeding data are presented. Although I show that the colour variations in Danaus and Hypolimnas are remarkably similar, the frequency rankings of the analogous forms within each species differ markedly in the long term. Moreover, 24% of Hypolimnas are transitional forms which are poor mimics. As the range of variation at Dar es Salaam is similar to that reported from Ghana, where the “model” is of quite different appearance, I conclude that mimetic resemblance is not of over-riding importance to its maintenance and perpetuation. The continuous variation in both fore- and hindwing coloration in the field is reflected in reared broods which fail to segregate into discontinuous phenotypes so that H, misippus is not truly polymorphic at Dar es Salaam. Females with transitional forewings have white on their hindwings more often than do the two extreme phenotypes, misippus and inaria. Transitional or white winged females are abundant only at times of high population density, whereas inaria larvae seem to have an advantage in crowded conditions. The extreme rarity of association between the inaria forewing and white hindwing suggests disruptive selection, the former being associated with the conditions of K selection and the latter with r selection. The calculation of selection coefficients supports this interpretation. Phenotypic diversity is greatest at high population density when the proportion of poor mimics is also maximal. At these times, apostatic selection may be important. At low density, diversity is minimal. Recent evidence concerning the efficiency of D. chrysippus as a model is discussed. The origin of colour variation in H. misippus probably owed much to mimicry but other selective forces such as apostatic selection or perhaps sexual selection are now of greater importance in maintaining it.  相似文献
