The metal contents of eleven black tea samples, four cultivated in Iran and seven imported, and their tea infusions were determined. Twelve elements consisting toxic metals (Al, As, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni) and essential mineral elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ca, and Mg) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Al, Ca, Mg, and Mn ranged in black tea leaves at mg g−1 levels, while Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn were at μg g−1 levels. Analysis of variance showed no statistically significant differences among most elements determined in cultivated and imported black teas in Iran except for Ni and Cu. The extraction efficiency of each element into tea infusions was evaluated. The solubility of measured metals in infusion extracts varied widely and ranged from 0 to 59.3%. Among the studied elements, Cr, Pb, and Cd showed the lowest rates of solubility and Ni had the highest rates of solubility. The amount of toxic metals and essential mineral elements that one may take up through consumption of black tea infusion was estimated. The amount of realizing each element into tea infusions and acceptable daily intake, for safety consumption of black tea, was compared.  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution, contamination status, and ecological risks of heavy metals in Tahaddart estuary were investigated. 24 surface sediment samples and two cores were collected and analyzed for major (Al and Fe), heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn), and grain size composition. The heavy metals assessment was carried out using different environmental indices. The results indicated that the spatial distribution patterns of Al, Fe, and Zn were mainly determined by the distribution of the finer grained fraction (<63?μm) in the sediment. In contrast, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb concentrations were controlled by anthropogenic activities (vehicular traffic from Highway Bridge and thermal power plant). The distribution of heavy metals in sediment cores showed an upward enrichment in heavy metals with high concentration found in the uppermost may related to the increasing in human activities. The pollution indexes confirmed that the Tahaddart estuary sediment was considerably to high contaminated by heavy metals near to different anthropogenic inputs. Similarly, the potential ecological risk index and the biological risk index present 21% probability of toxicity posing potential risk to the aquatic organisms. These results provide basic information that can be used to protect and improve the quality of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Where serpentine soils exist, variation in soil properties affects plant species distribution at both coarse and fine spatial scales. The New Idria (California, USA) serpentine mass has barren areas, supporting only sparse shrub and tree islands, adjacent to areas of densely-vegetated serpentine chaparral. To identify factors limiting growth on barren relative to vegetated serpentine soils, we analyzed soils from barren, shrub-island within barren, and vegetated areas and foliage from shrub-island and vegetated areas. We also grew Ceanothus cuneatus (native evergreen shrub), Achillea millefolium (native perennial forb), and Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens (invasive annual grass) in soils from barren and vegetated areas amended factorially with N, K, and Ca in a pot study. In well-watered pots, biomass was greater by 5-, 14-, and 33-fold for Ceanothus, Achillea, and Bromus, respectively, on vegetated-area-collected soils than on barren-collected soils, indicating a strong soil chemistry effect. Although field soil data suggested nutrient deficiency and not heavy metal toxicity, pot study plant data indicated otherwise for two of the three species. On barren-collected soils, only Ceanothus responded positively to added N and Ca and did not show greater foliar Mg or heavy metal (Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, Zn) concentrations than on vegetated-area-collected soils. Ceanothus maintained lower root Mg and heavy metal (Fe, Ni, Cr, Co) concentrations on barren soils and translocated less heavy metal (Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, Cu) from roots to foliage than Achillea and Bromus. Achillea and Bromus showed significant log-log biomass relationships with foliar Ca:Mg (+), Mg (-), and heavy metals (Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, Cu, Zn) (-), while Ceanothus showed relationships only with Ca:Mg (+) and Mg (-). The New Idria barren-vegetated pattern appears to be maintained by different factors for different species or functional types— low Ca:Mg ratios on barrens for all species tested, high heavy metal concentrations for Achillea and Bromus, and low macronutrient (N) concentrations for Ceanothus. Combined data from this and other studies suggest high heavy metal concentrations more strongly affect herbaceous than woody species, contributing to variation in species distribution on serpentine soils.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to assess the impact of wastewater on parsley (Petroselinum crispum). The parameters determined for soil were pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (SOM), nutrient elements (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Fe), and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb), while the parameters determined for the plant included pigment content, dry matter, nutrient element, and heavy metals. SOM, EC, and clay contents were higher, and pH was slightly acidic in soil treated with wastewater compared to control soil. The enrichment factors (EF) of the nutrient elements in contaminated soil are in the sequence of Na (2) > Ca (1.32) > Mn = Mg (1.17) > Cu (1.11) > Zn (1.08) > Fe (1.07) > K (0.93), while EF in parsley are Na (6.63) > Ca (1.60) > Mg (1.34) > Zn (1.15) > Fe (0.95) > Cu = K (0.90) > Mn (0.85). Application of wastewater significantly decreased dry matter, while photosynthetic pigment content increased in parsley. The enrichment of the heavy metals is in the sequence: Cd (1.142) > Pb (1.131) > Ni (1.112) > Cr (1.095). P. crispum shows a high transfer factor (TF > 1) for Cd signifying a high mobility of Cd from soil to plant. Thus, although the wastewater irrigation in parsley production aims to produce socioeconomic benefits, study results indicated that municipal wastewater is not suitable for irrigation of parsley because it has negative effects on plant and causes heavy metal accumulation.  相似文献

Selected trace metals were analyzed in human malignant and nonmalignant (benign) breast tissue samples by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In malignant tissues, dominant mean concentrations were revealed by Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Al at 927, 552, 231, 61.7, 36.5, 18.3, and 8.94 microg/g, respectively, while the mean metal levels in benign tissues were 903, 435, 183, 63.3, 24.7, 14.5, and 10.1 microg/g, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, K, Ca, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the malignant tissues compared with the benign tissues. Significantly strong correlations (r > 0.50) in malignant tissues were observed between Mn and Co, Mn and Cd, Cd and Cr, Fe and Mn, Cd and Co, Fe and Co, Mg and Pb, Cd and Fe, Mg and Ni, Pb and Ni, Ni and Sr, and Fe and Pb, whereas, Cd and Co, Cd and Mn, Co and Mg, Co and Mn, Cu and Mn, Co and Ni, Mg and Ni, Cd and Cu, Cd and Ni, Ca and Mg, Mn and Pb, Cu and Ni, Fe and Ni, Cd and Mg, Co and Cu, Cr and Na, and Cd and Cr revealed strong and significant relationships in benign tissues at p < 0.001. Principal component analysis of the metals data yielded six principal components for malignant tissues and five principal components for benign tissues, with considerably different loadings, duly supported by cluster analysis. The study revealed a considerably different pattern of distribution and mutual correlations of trace metals in the breast tissues of benign and cancerous patients.  相似文献

The present study was performed at a heavy-traffic affected soil to examine the efficacy of bioaccumulation and translocation potentials of heavy metals by the naturally growing weed Plantago major. Heavy metals were analyzed in soil as well as in plant below- and above-ground parts along different distances from a heavy-traffic highway. All the investigated soil heavy metals, except Cd, varied significantly, while pH and E.C had no significant difference, with increasing distance from the highway. Likewise, there was a significant decrease of heavy metals in plant below- and aboveground parts. In addition, no significant difference between most soil and root heavy metals at 20 and 100 m as well as those at 500 and 750 m distance from the highway. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) of all heavy metals, except Cd and Sr, were less than unity at most distances. However, Cd showed relative BF decline with the distance in contrast to Sr, which increases as distance from the highway increases. On the other hand, the translocation factors (TF) of Cd, Co, Cu, Pb and Zn were higher at the distances far from the highway, while that of Fe, Cr and Sr were higher near the highway. Furthermore, the enrichment factor (EF) showed small variations, among the investigated heavy metals, with varying distances from the pollution source. It was found that soil Fe, Al, Cr, Ni, Sr, V and Zn had significant positive correlation with all investigated heavy metals in P. major roots. The higher TFs of Cd, Fe and Pb in P. major shoots makes it suitable for phytoextraction from soil, while the lower ratios of Al, Mn, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu and Sr make it suitable for their phytostabilization. Therefore, this plant can be used as a bioindicator and biomonitor for traffic related heavy metals.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine the potential of multidimensional analysis, and in particular of correspondence analysis (CA), in bringing to light the influence of sex and age on trace element (TE) concentrations in hair from an unselected French population. Sixteen elements (S, Hg, Se, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Cr, Mg, Al, Ca, Cu, Ag) were assayed by inductively coupled argon plasma (ICAP) emission specrroscopy in the scalp hair of 135 men and 346 women. In spite of the high background noise, CA was able to reveal the differing patterns in males and females. For instance, in this population, higher relative levels of the essential elements, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Cu, but also of Ag, characterized women’s hair, whereas higher relative levels of the heavy metals, Fe and Pb, were associated with men’s hair. Al and Ag were unexplainedly high in the hair of the youngest members of the population. The Cu and Co of youth seemed to give way to a predominance of Zn in maturity. The hair of individuals in their forties tended to be richest in Ca and Mg, but these elements decreased with advancing age. Heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Fe) accumulated with age, whereas Se, Mn, and Cr seemed independent of age. CA is manifestly a very useful tool for revealing underlying dimensions in complex dynamic systems and unsuspected relationships among variables. Clearly, the significance of the high Al and Ag contents in the hair of certain members of the population, especially of the very young, needs to be investigated from both physiological and toxicological aspects.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation and rhizofiltration potential of P. stratiotes for heavy metals were investigated to mitigate water pollution in the Egyptian wetlands. Plant and water samples were collected monthly through nine quadrats equally distributed along three sites at Al-Sero drain in Giza Province. The annual mean of the shoot biomass was 10 times that of the root. The concentrations of shoot heavy metals fell in the order: Fe < Mn < Cr < Pb < Cu < Zn < Ni < Co < Cd, while that of the roots were: Fe < Mn < Cr < Pb < Zn < Ni < Co < Cu < Cd. The bio-concentration factor (BCF) of most investigated heavy metals, except Cr and Pb, was greater than 1000, while the translocation factor (TF) of most investigated metals, except Pb and Cu, did not exceed one. The rhizofiltration potential (RP) of heavy metals was higher than 1000 for Fe, and 100 for Cr, Pb and Cu. Significant positive correlations between Fe and Cu in water with those in plant roots and leaves, respectively were recorded, which, in addition to the high BCF and RP, indicate the potential use of P. stratiotes in mitigating these toxic metals.  相似文献

Heavy metals are known to induce Fe chlorosis in different plantspecies. Heavy-metal-induced chlorosis is generally correlatedwith low plant Fe contents, suggesting effects of heavy metalson Fe mobilization and uptake. Under Fe-deficient conditions, dicotyledonous plants enhance root Fe(lll) reductase activity, thus increasing the capacity to reduce Fe(MI) to Fe(ll), theform in which roots absorb Fe. We studied the effect of severalheavy metals (Mn, Pb, Zn, Mo, Ni, Cu, and Cd) on the inductionof enhanced root Fe(lll) reductase by 11-d-old Fe-deficientcucumber [Cucumis sativus L. cv. Ashley). The effect of theseheavy metals on the function of the induced Fe(lll) reductasewas also investigated. Results showed that some heavy metalscan inhibit both the induction and function of root Fe(lll)reductase. Ni, at 20//M, and Cu and Cd, at 5 fiM concentrationor higher, severely inhibited the induction of root Fe(lll)reductase while Mn, Pb, Zn, and Mo had little effect, even atconcentrations higher than 20 //M. Function of the induced rootFe(lll) reductase only was negatively affected by Cu and Ni. Key words: Cucumis sativus, iron deficiency, iron reduction, heavy metals  相似文献

Metal determination in human tissues is the most common application of biological monitoring for screening, diagnosis and assessment of metal exposures and their risks. Various biopsy-materials may be used. This paper deals with the quantitative determination of Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn concentrations in nails of male subjects exposed to these metals alongwith their respective controls, while working in locomotive, carriage and roadways workshops, and lead battery factories. The levels of Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn in fingernails, assayed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, were compared with their respective controls by student ‘t’ test. All the obtained values were correlated to the personal and medical history of the subjects under study. Significantly high levels of Cd, Pb, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn were present in smokers, compared to nonsmokers. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn and Fe were not significantly high in vegetarian subjects. It was also observed that there is no contribution of liquor towards nail-metal concentration. Significant correlations were observed between skin disease and Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu; hypertension and Cd, Mn, Cu; mental stress and Cd, Pb, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn; diabetes and Cr, Mn, Ni; chest pain and Pb; respiratory trouble and Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn; tuberculosis and Zn; acidity and Cd; and ophthalmic problems and Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn  相似文献

This study investigated the concurrent accumulation of eight heavy metals by two floating aquatic macrophytes (Lemna minor and Azolla filiculoides) cultivated in ambient media and blended wastewaters in the semiarid regions of Ethiopia. Both species accumulated heavy metals in varying degrees with a significant concentration gradient within the immediate water media. Highest bioconcentration factor (BCF) was determined for Mn and Fe in both plants. Results revealed that L. minor was high phytoaccumulator for Fe, Mn, Zn, and Co but moderate for Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr. On the other hand, A. filiculoides was a high accumulator for Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu, but its potency was moderate for Co, Cr, and Ni, but lower for Cd. Both species exhibited significant difference in accumulating Co, Zn, and Mn (p < 0.05). In general, the BCFs for both plants were comparable within the same treatment. In this study, stronger associations between the heavy metal concentrations in the plant tissues and in the grown water media were observed for A. filiculoides.  相似文献

The influence of the endogenous micronutrient chelator, nicotianamine(NA), and of Cu nutrition on the distribution of Cu, Fe, Mn,Zn, and NA was investigated in eight different shoot organs, roots, and in xylem exudates of the NA-containing tomato wildtype Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Bonner Beste and itsNA-less mutant chloronerva. Contrary to the other heavy metals, copper transport in thexylem was inefficient in the mutant and was enhanced by an applicationof NA to the roots or leaves in proportion to the applied NAconcentration. Also, with NA application, the Cu concentrationin mutant roots decreased significantly, and increased in theshoot. Fe and Mn transport in the xylem was greater in the mutantthan in the wild type, and was decreased in the mutant by theapplication of NA to the leaves. Zn transport in the xylem wasthe same in both genotypes and was unaffected by NA application. After application of NA to leaves and roots of the mutant itwas possible to detect NA in the xylem exudate (up to 2nmolNA(g–1 root FWh–1). High Cu supply (3 µM) resulted in higher Cu and Mn concentrationsin all organs of the wild type as compared to mutant organs, but Fe concentrations were not influenced. Under high Cu supply(3µM) the NA concentrations of roots and the three youngestleaves of the wild type were higher than under normal Cu supply(0.3 µM). The highest concentrations were found in theshoot apex under both Cu conditions (up to 361 nmol NAg–1FW). It is concluded from our experiments and from the high stabilityconstant of the NA-Cu-complex (log K= 18.6) that NA is involvedin Cu translocation whereas for the translocation of Fe, Mn,and Zn, NA is not essential. Abstract

The purpose of the study was to acquire the source and evaluate the risk posed by heavy metals in road dust of steel industrial city (Anshan), Liaoning, Northeast China. Potential ecological risk index (RI), pollution index (PI) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were applied to evaluate the heavy metal pollution level, and the carcinogenic risk (RI) and hazard index (HI) were calculated to estimate the human health risk. The geographic information system maps clearly reveal the hot spots of heavy metal spatial distribution. Principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) classified heavy metals into three groups. The metal Zn and Pb originate from the traffic emission, while Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni and Sb primarily come from industrial activities. These two pathways were the major source of heavy metals pollution by positive matrix factorization (PMF). The Igeo and PI values of heavy metals were decreased in the following order: Cd?>?Sb?>?Zn?>?Fe?>?Pb?>?Cu?>?Cr?>?Sn?>?Mn?>?Ni. The RI index showed the heavy metals were moderate to very high potential ecological risk. The HI values for children and adults presented a decreasing order of Cr?>?Pb?>?Ni?>?Cu?>?Cd?>?Zn. The HI also predicted a possibility of non-carcinogenic risk for children living in urban areas in comparison with adults.  相似文献

Pteris vittata L. subsp. vittata, a potential arsenic hyperaccumulator fern, growing naturally in the vicinity offly ash was analyzed for the concentration of nine heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn Ni, Al, Cr, Pb, Si, and As) from five different sites around of Kanti Thermal Power Station at Muzaffarpur in Bihar State, India. Metal accumulation in P. vittata was correlated with the level of pollution at five selected sampling sites. The results revealed significantly more accumulation of these metals in the above ground parts of the plant than the parts below ground. Statistical parameters such as the coefficient of variation (CV%) showed a higher for As, Cu, Cr, and a lower one for Fe, Ni, Al. There was high spatial variability in the total metal concentration at different sites. The present study confirmed that P. vittata is a heavy metals accumulator and that it is a highly suitable candidate for phytoremediation of metal contaminated wastelands.  相似文献

The biosorption of several toxic heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Co, Ni, Zn and Cu) by the exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Paenibacillus jamilae, a potential biosorbent for metal remediation and recovery was studied. Firstly, the biochemical composition of this bacterial polymer was determined. Glucose was the most abundant neutral sugar, followed by galactose, rhamnose, fucose and mannose. The polymer presented a high content of uronic acids (28.29%), which may serve as binding sites for divalent cations. The presence of carboxylic groups was also detected by infrared spectroscopy. The EPS presented an interesting affinity for Pb in comparison with the other five metals. Lead biosorption (303.03 mg g−1) was tenfold higher (in terms of mg of metal adsorbed per gram of EPS) than the biosorption of the rest of metals. Biosorption kinetics, the effect of pH and the effect of competitive biosorption were determined. Finally, we found that the EPS was able to precipitate Fe(III), but the EPS-metal precipitate did not form with Fe(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II).  相似文献

This study evaluates heavy metal removal associated with phytomass management in a Typic Hapludox after three applications of pig slurry. Like humic acids in pig slurry were characterized through physics and chemical spectroscopy technics. Heavy metal levels were determined in ration that was offered to pigs, anaerobically digested pig slurry, and plant tissues from pig slurry-fertilized black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) intercrop. Soil contamination was evaluated by the pseudo-total heavy metal levels in six soil layers and the bioavailable levels in the top soil layer. Results indicate that the ration is the origin of heavy metals in the pig slurry. The approximate levels in the ration were as follows (mg kg?1): Cu 23.9, Zn 92.02, 153.15, Mn 30.98, Ni 0.23, Pb 10.75, Cr 0.34, Co 0.08, and Cd 0.05. The approximate levels of these metals in the pig slurry were as follows (mg kg?1): Cu 71.08, Zn 345.67, Fe 83.02, Mn 81.71, Ni 1.13, Pb 4.35, Co 0.28, and Cd 0.16. Like humic acids contained 55% aliphatic chains, 14% oxygenated aliphatic chains, and 15% carboxyls, demonstrating their high capacity for interaction with heavy metals by forming soluble complexes. Soil contamination was indicated by the accumulation of heavy metals in the six soil layers in relation to the applied pig slurry dose (ranged as follows (mg kg?1): Cu 110 to 150, Zn 50 to 120, Ni 20 to 40, and Pb 12 to 16) and as bioavailable forms (levels ranged as follows (mg kg?1): Cu < 1, Zn 1.0–1.5, Ni 0.1–1.5, and Pb 1.9–6.3). The positive correlation between heavy metal accumulation in the plants and soil bioavailable heavy metal levels and the lowest heavy metal levels under higher intensity of phytomass removal demonstrate the ability of phytomass management to reduce soil contamination.  相似文献

Effects of simulated acid rain and heavy metal deposition onthe ultrastructure of the lichenBryoria fuscescens(Gyeln.) Brodoand Hawksw. were examined in a field study conducted in northernFinland. Lichens were exposed to simulated rain containing twolevels of a mixture of copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni2+) ionsalone or in combination with acid rain (H2SO4) at pH 3 over2 months in addition to ambient rainfall. The algal and fungalcomponents responded differently to pH and there was an interactionwith metal toxicity. The algal partner was the most sensitiveto acid rain and heavy metal combinations and had more degeneratecells than the fungal partner. Damage was apparent in chloroplastsand mitochondria, where thylakoid and mitochondrial cristaewere swollen. The fungal partner was the more sensitive to highconcentrations of metal ions in the absence of acidity, suggestingan ameliorating interaction between the metals and acidity. For algae, critical metal concentrations in the thallus were>50 µg g-1for Cu and >7 µg g-1for Ni in thepresence of acidity, and >20 µ g g-1for Ni in the absenceof acidity. Detrimental effects of heavy metals on fungal ultrastructurewere seen when thallus metal concentrations exceeded 400 µgg-1for Cu and 100 µg g-1d. wt for Ni. The results suggestthat acid wet deposition containing metal ions may reduce survivalof lichens in northern environments.Copyright 1998 Annals ofBotany Company.
