Large storm-relocated Porites coral blocks are widespread on the reef flats of Nansha area, southern South China Sea. Detailed investigations of coral reef ecology, geomorphology and sedimentation on Yongshu Reef indicate that such storm-relocated blocks originated from large Porites lutea corals growing on the spurs within the reef-front living coral zone. Because the coral reef has experienced sustained subsidence and reef development during the Holocene, dead corals were continuously covered by newly growing coral colonies. For this reason, the coral blocks must have been relocated by storms from the living sites and therefore the ages of these storm-relocated corals should approximate the times when the storms occurred. Rapid emplacement of these blocks is also evidenced by the lack of coral overgrowth, encrustation or subtidal alteration.U-series dating of the storm-relocated blocks as well as of in situ reef flat corals suggests that, during the last 1000 years, at least six strong storms occurred in 1064±30, 1210±5-1201±4, 1336±9, 1443±9, 1685±8-1680±6, 1872±15 AD, respectively, with an average 160-year cycle (110-240 years). The last storm, which occurred in 1872±15 AD, also led to mortality of the reef flat corals dated at ∼130 years ago. Thus, the storm had significant impacts on coral reef ecology and morphology.  相似文献

The species composition of rotifers in Lake Awasa was studied and 40 species recorded. Seven species appeared in large numbers in the plankton seasonally. Brachionus and Keratella species made up more than 50% of the rotifer community by numbers during the observation period (1983–1987). The standing stock numbers of rotifer species are low with a maximum of 50 individuals L–1, and some possible reasons for this observation are discussed. Most rotifer species are distributed randomly in the lake and show 3-fold fluctuations between consecutive days.The seasonal dynamics of most rotifer species are correlated with mixing periods in the lake, and the amplitude of seasonal fluctuation may be as high as 50-fold. Clear-cut seasonal succession of rotifer species was observed during the study period, but no consistent seasonal pattern for individual species was obvious. Also, observations indicate that rotifer biomass is partly sustained by availability of carbon through the bacterial pathway and that competitive exclusion for food by nauplii and ciliates probably keeps rotifer abundance low.  相似文献

Aquatic plants were collected from different localities in the Al-Hammar marsh, southern Iraq, during late spring 1985. The marsh water is oligohaline. Typha angustata, Potamogeton pectinatus and Phragmites australis were the most abundant species in the study sites. The chemical composition of 15 aquatic plants in the study sites are given and compared with soil and water characters. These plants indicate variations among the species. All plants contain higher amounts of K than Na, while the opposite is found in the water. The Ca contents of plants and soil are higher than Mg.  相似文献

Changes in invertebrate population numbers and composition were monitored in six small shallow ephemeral pans during four consecutive inundations of spring, summer and autumn 1988/1989. The community was generally characterized by crustaceans and was invaded by insect larvae in summer. Community changes and succession were prominent in spring but less so in summer and autumn. Large pans supported more species than small pans. During longer inundation there was less difference between the initial and the final population composition than during shorter inundation, although the total population density did not increase significantly. This indicated that population composition stabilized as inundation lengthened. Population changes of six representative taxa were not correlated to changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of the water.  相似文献

The response of a nematode community to a decreasing organic matter loading was studied. Monthly observations were made at three stations at an intertidal brackish-water mudflat in the Ems estuary in 1980 (highly polluted), 1987 (moderately polluted) and 1993 (no significant pollution). Nematodes were identified and counted in the upper 1 cm of the sediment.The decrease of organic pollution was followed by an increase in species diversity, whereas numerical densities decreased. Diatom eating nematodes, being dominant under eutrophic conditions in 1980, decreased strongly, partly as a consequence of decreasing diatom standing stock. Eudiplogaster pararmatus, an indicator of organic enrichment, decreased strongly to disappear completely in 1993. Bonger's maturity index was used to describe the response of the nematode community. At 2 most polluted stations a strong response was observed from 1980 to 1987: a decrease of colonizer species. After 1987, although persister species increased, no further development towards a more natural succession type community occurred, probably due to the natural stress of the habitat (high mudflat, low salinities).  相似文献

Plant community dynamics in Mediterranean basin ecosystems are mainly driven by an alternation of episodes of human intervention and land abandonment. As a result, a mosaic of plant communities has evolved following different stages of degradation and regeneration. Some authors has relate secondary succession to abandoned culture lands and regeneration to natural systems with abandonment of livestock or forestry exploitation. In this paper, the dynamics of shrublands in mid-mountain areas in the South of Spain after disturbance and land abandonment has been studied. The plant cover and 13 environmental variables of 137 selected sites on the Grazalema mountains was analysed to determine the vegetation pattern in relation to environmental factors and the succession types, either regenerative or secondary succession. The results show that today the Grazalema mountains have a heterogeneous vegetation pattern. Besides physical factors such as altitude or soil , human disturbance has modulated current vegetation patterns and dynamics. Two main types of vegetation dynamics can be distinguished in the study area. In areas affected by cutting, regeneration results in rich and dense shrub land, with resprouters as dominant species. In areas affected by recurrent wildfires or agriculture, secondary succession became dominant, resulting in less diverse shrubland, due to the dominance of seeders and decrease in resprouter species richness and cover.  相似文献

Synopsis Geographical colour variation and distribution of 48 common cichlid fish species were studied at 20 sites along an 85 km shoreline at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika, Africa. Sixteen species had two or more colour morphs and 11 species showed a limited distribution in the study area. They were all rock-dwellers. Distributional borders of the color morphs and species with a limited distribution mostly lay in two long sandy beaches, 7 and 13 km long. We suggest that the long sandy beaches can be effective barriers against dispersal of shallow-water rock-dwelling cichlid fishes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of duration and the concomitant ventilatory drift of heavy exercise on the changes in ventilation following the cessation of exercise. Seven male subjects ran on a motor-driven treadmill at a constant work-rate of 90% of VO2max for either 5 min or 7 min on 60 occasions. The exercise was terminated abruptly by stopping the treadmill with a remote switch while recording inspired minute ventilation (VI) breath by breath. The fast drop in VI at the end of exercise is significantly less than the corresponding increase at the onset of exercise (P less than 0.05) and this difference is greater with longer duration of exercise. The time constants of the slow ventilatory decline are significantly increased following 7 min of exercise (P less than 0.05). They are also positively related to the drift in VI that occurs with the continuation of heavy exercise beyond 3 min. This relationship is however not statistically significant (P greater than 0.05). These results indicate that the rate of ventilatory decline is slower after the end of a longer duration of exercise and this is caused by mechanism/s that also contribute/s to the ventilatory drift of heavy exercise. As, of the many different possibilities, only the respiratory after-discharge (central neural reverberatory) mechanism is likely to be more activated with a longer duration of exercise and on the basis of our previous observations (Jeyaranjan et al. 1988, 1989), the results suggest that the mechanism of after-discharge is an important mediator of ventilatory response during as well as after the cessation of heavy exercise.  相似文献

The role of secondary vegetation in restoring soil fertility during shifting cultivation in the tropics is well known. Yet the effect of secondary succession on the spatial patterns of soil properties has received little attention. To determine whether changes in the plant community as a result of shifting cultivation affect the scale of spatial dependence for biologically important soil nutrients, we sampled three dry tropical forest stands in Campeche, Mexico. These stands represented a gradient of cultivation history: one mature forest stand, a forest fallow that had undergone one cultivation-fallow cycle, and a forest fallow that had undergone two cultivation-fallow cycles. We used an analysis of semivariance to quantify the scale and magnitude of spatial dependence for organic matter content (OM), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and aluminum (Al) in each stand. The scale of spatial dependence varied with cultivation history, but the degree of spatial dependence did not differ among stands. In the mature forest P and K were autocorrelated over distances >7.5 m. In the forest fallows 48–88% of the variation in soil P and K was autocorrelated over distances up to 1.1–5.1 m. In contrast, the range of autocorrelation for Al (∼2.5 m) did not differ among stands. We conclude that shifting cultivation changes the range of autocorrelation for biologically important soil nutrients at a scale that may influence plant growth. The finer scaled pattern of soil nutrients in forest fallows is likely to persist with continued shifting cultivation, since fallows are cleared every 3–15 years.  相似文献

Little is known about past vegetation dynamics in Eastern Tropical South America (ETSA). Here we describe patterns of chloroplast (cp) DNA variation in Plathymenia reticulata, a widespread tree in the ETSA Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, but not found in the xeromorphic Caatinga. Forty one populations, comprising 220 individuals, were analysed by sequencing the trnS‐trnG and trnL‐trnL‐trnF cpDNA regions. Combined, they resulted in 18 geographically structured haplotypes. The central region of the sampling area, comprising Minas Gerais and Goiás Brazilian states, is a centre of genetic diversity and probably the most longstanding area of the distribution range of the species. In contrast, populations from northeastern Brazil and the southern Cerrados showed very low diversity levels, almost exclusively with common haplotypes which are also found in the central region. Coupled with a long‐branched star‐like network, these patterns suggest a recent range expansion of P. reticulata to those regions from central region sources. The recent origin of the species (in the early Pleistocene) or the extinction of some populations due to drier and cooler climate during the last glacial maximum could have been responsible for that phylogeographic pattern. The populations from northeastern Brazil originated from two colonization routes, one eastern (Atlantic) and one western (inland). Due to its high diversity and complex landscape, the central region, especially central‐north Minas Gerais (between 15°–18° S and 42°–46° W), should be given the highest priority for conservation.  相似文献

Geospatial and field data were merged to characterize the invasion of an exotic macrophyte into a large (∼6192 ha), reservoir, the Chippewa Flowage, Wisconsin, USA. Multi-scale analyses provided data for quantitative models of human, abiotic and biotic influences that would explain the presence and abundance of Myriophyllum spicatum L., a widespread, aquatic species. Human and abiotic factors were analysed in a geographic information system and additional abiotic and biotic factors were sampled at 2778 sample points. Using multivariate logistic and multiple linear regressions the relationships between 29 factors and the species’ presence and abundance were quantified. M. spicatum occurred at 181 of 992 vegetated points. M. spicatum abundance was significantly influenced by two geospatial variables (wave action and water-level drawdown) and two site variables (water depth and native species presence). Separate models for shallow and deep water explained 32% and 30% of M. spicatum abundance, respectively (compared to 22.8% using all 181 points). The species’ vertical distribution (range = 0.30-4.27 m) was related to depth of winter drawdown (∼1.3 m on average) and to water depth (an indicator of decreasing light), as well as to shading by floating-leaved macrophytes. Spatial extrapolation of model predictions for M. spicatum presence indicated that a total 940 hectares are at risk for M. spicatum invasion (∼15% of the Chippewa Flowage; about 2.5 times larger than the current distribution).  相似文献

于2015年和2018年12月初调查珠江河网4个江段(左滩、小塘、外海和榄核)的典型水草床群落生物量时空变化特征,同时调查了相应江段的水草床、邻近非水草床区域的主要贝类生物量时空变化,并利用CCA分析其与主要水文、水质及沉积环境因子的相关性。结果表明:珠江河网典型水草床群落主要以刺苦草为优势种,偶伴生金鱼藻、穗状狐尾藻和轮叶黑藻等种类;对比两次调查结果发现,除小塘江段水草床生物量(以鲜重计)维持较稳定,高达9 kg·m-2以外,其余3个江段的水草床均有种类减少、生物量下降的消落趋势。小塘江段贝类生物量最高,均值达968.8 g·m-2,显著高于其他江段;所调查江段水草床区域中的贝类均高于非水草床区域;在由浅至深的水草床区域,虽然水草生物量逐增,但其贝类生物量却逐减;相同江段非水草床区域的贝类生物量显著低于水草床区域,表明珠江河网水草床为贝类提供良好的栖息、生长和繁育生境。径流量和水位变化可能是驱动珠江河网典型水草床群落年际演替的主要因素,而水草优势种类的保持可能受沉积物粒径组分和水体流速等因子的调控。  相似文献

Background: Treeline ecotones represent environmental boundaries that fluctuate in space and time and thus induce changes in plant taxonomic and functional diversity.

Aims: To study changes through time in taxonomic and functional plant diversity patterns along the treeline ecotone.

Methods: In 2002, vegetation was sampled along a gradient from upper montane forest to the treeline–alpine transition in the South Ural Mountains, Russia. In 2014, vegetation was resampled and plant functional traits were collected. We studied spatial and temporal changes in plant species composition, functional composition and functional diversity.

Results: Species composition and diversity changed along the elevational gradient. The functional composition in height, leaf area, specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen content decreased with elevation, whereas functional composition of leaf carbon content increased. We found a temporal shift towards shorter plants with smaller leaves in treeline sites. Functional richness varied in several traits along the elevational gradient, while functional dispersion showed a trend towards increased functional dispersion in height, specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen in the treeline–tundra transition.

Conclusions: Tree encroachment across the treeline ecotone has resulted in a shift in plant species relative abundances and functional diversity, possibly affecting plant community assembly patterns.  相似文献

Phytoliths are microscopic amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2.H2O) particles occurring in leaves, internodes, glumes and inflorescence within all members of the grass family Poaceae. Phytoliths of grasses are of particular interest, as they possess morphological features which have encouraged many investigators to identify these plants from which fossil phytoliths might have originated. The present study is a step towards preparing a systematic inventory of grass phytoliths in western tropical Africa. Morphology and dimensions of phytoliths from 66 species belonging to the tribe Paniceae have been studied. Four shape categories of lobate phytoliths have been determined in leaf blade spodograms: bilobate, nodular bilobate, polylobate, quadra-lobate. Bilobate shaped phytoliths are frequently represented in all genera of Paniceae. 13 groups of lobate phytoliths have been distinguished based on significant morphological criteria like shape of outer margins, shape of the shank and number of lobes. A size category system of lobate phytolith dimensions (length, width; length and width of shanks) has been developed by the analysis of average, minimum and maximum values of these dimensions. Application of the size category system results on classifying the major groups into 25 subgroups. The study proves that size and shape can be used to assign some of the lobate phytoliths to their respective genera. Some rarely produced lobate shapes like nodular bilobate and polylobate types could be used together on assemblage basis as markers for definite genera in the tribe Paniceae, e.g. Brachiaria, Panicum, Pennisetum and Setaria. Also, bilobate phytoliths with concave margins have been recorded in five species. Bilobate phytoliths with flattened and convex margins and quadra-lobate shapes are produced by almost all species which therefore resulted in an inconsistent and indefinite relationship with the taxa that produce them. The study shows a correlation between width dimensions of bilobate shapes and their shanks. Greater width dimensions usually connected to thick shanks while short ones are attached to thin shanks. A spectrum on percentages of species producing each type of lobate phytolith has been designed. It is recommended that such spectrum should be carried out for all tribes of Poaceae on phyto-geographical basis which might eliminate the effect of redundancy and multiplicity on the classification of grass phytoliths.  相似文献

To examine the seasonal succession of the entire zooplankton community in Lake Biwa, zooplankton biomass (on an areal basis) and its distribution patterns among crustaceans, rotifers and ciliates were studied in the north basin from April 1997 to June 1998. Seasonal changes in phytoplankton and population dynamics of Daphnia galeata were also examined to assess food condition and predation pressure by fish. From March to November, crustaceans dominated zooplankton biomass, but rotifers and ciliates were dominant from December to February. Among crustaceans, Eodiaptomus japonicus was the most abundant species, followed by D. galeata. Zooplankton biomass increased from January to a peak in early April, just before the spring bloom of phytoplankton, then decreased in mid-April when mortality rate of D. galeata increased. From mid-June, zooplankton increased and maintained a high level until the beginning of November. During this period, both birth and mortality rates of D. galeata were relatively high and a number of rotifer and crustacean species were observed. However, their abundances were very limited except for E. japonicus which likely preys on ciliates and rotifers. In Lake Biwa, food sources other than phytoplankton, such as resuspended organic matter from the sediments, seems to play a crucial role in zooplankton succession from winter to early spring, while zooplankton community seems to be regulated mainly by fish predation from summer to fall.  相似文献

The effects of root applications of kinetin, gibberellic acid (GA3) and indoleacetic acid (IAA) on photosynthesis was measured using an open infrared CO2 gas-exchange system. There was a 30–35% increase in the photosynthetic rates (mg CO2/dm2/hr) of attached leaves within 8 hr following root treatment with 0.47 M kinetin. On a short-term basis (up to 2 days) 0.47 M kinetin was shown to have the optimal stimulatory effect on photosynthesis, relative growth rate (RGR) and total plant dry weight. If the roots were in contact with 0.47 M kinetin for longer than two days there was severe branching of the root system and growth was severely decreased. When plants were left in contact with the kinetin treatment for up to 7 days the optimal stimulatory concentration was considerably lower (0.0047 M) . Plants receiving a 4, 8, or 12 hr pulse with 0.47 M kinetin to the roots exhibited higher leaf photosynthetic rates than the control. Plants receiving an 8 or 12 hr pulse with 0.47 M kinetin maintained photosynthetic rates higher than the control for the duration of the experiment (8 days) while the 4 hr pulse remained higher than the control for only 5 days. A sharp decrease in the photosynthetic rate, RGR and total plant dry weight was observed two days following continual treatments with 0.47 M kinetin to the roots. At low light levels there was approximately a 100% increase in the photosynthetic rate two days following treatment with 0.47 M kinetin while at a saturating irradiance there was a 30 to 35% increase. Indoleacetic acid either showed no effect on the photosynthetic rate, RGR and total plant dry weight or an inhibitory effect was observed. Either GA3 or kinetin alone were shown to stimulate photosynthesis, RGR and total plant dry weight, however, when GA3 at a 1.4 M concentration was applied in combination with kinetin at a 0.0047 M concentration to the roots of tomato plants there was no additive effect. In all cases kinetin dramatically reduced leaf resistance whereas GA3 had no effect.By supplying either GA3 or kinetin to the roots of tomato plants a highly reproducible stimulation in the photosynthetic rate, RGR and total plant dry weight can be achieved at physiologically relevant concentrations, whereas IAA appears to have an inhibitory effect.Approved for publication on July 29, 1981 as paper number 6281 in the journal series of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station.Research Assistant and Assistant Professor, respectively.  相似文献

In excised stem segments of floating rice (Oryza sativa L.), as well as in intact plants, submergence greatly stimulates the elongation of internodes. The differences in the composition of cell wall polysaccharides along the highest internodes of submerged and air-grown stem segments were examined. The newly elongated parts of internodes that had been submerged for two days contained considerably less cellulosic and noncellulosic polysaccharides than air-grown internodes, an indication that the cell walls of the newly elongated parts of submerged internodes are extremely thin. In the young parts of both air-grown and submerged internodes, the relative amounts of noncellulosic polysaccharides were equal to those of -cellulose, whereas the relative amounts of -cellulose were higher than those of noncellulosic polysaccharides in the upper, old parts. In the cell-elongation zones of both air-grown and submerged internodes, glucose was predominant among the noncellulosic neutral sugars of cell wall. The relative amount of glucose in noncellulosic neutral sugars decreased toward the upper, old parts of internodes, whereas that of xylose increased.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics in streams is important, yet few studies focus on DOC dynamics in Midwestern streams during storms. In this study, stream DOC dynamics during storms in two Midwestern watersheds with contrasting land uses, the change in character of stream DOC during storms, and the usability of DOC as a hydrologic tracer in artificially drained landscapes of the Midwest are investigated. Major cation/DOC concentrations, and DOC specific UV absorbance (SUVA) and fluorescence index (FI) were monitored at 2–4 h intervals during three spring storms. Although DOC is less aromatic in the mixed land use watershed than in the agricultural watershed, land use has little impact on stream DOC concentration during storms. For both watersheds, DOC concentration follows discharge, and SUVA and FI values indicate an increase in stream DOC aromaticity and lignin content during storms. The comparison of DOC/major cation flushing dynamics indicates that DOC is mainly exported via overland flow/macropore flow. In both watersheds, the increase in DOC concentration in the streams during storms corresponds to a shift in the source of DOC from DOC originating from mineral soil layers of the soil profile at baseflow, to DOC originating from surficial soil layers richer in aromatic substances and lignin during storms. Results also suggest that DOC, SUVA and FI could be used as hydrologic tracers in artificially drained landscapes of the Midwest. These results underscore the importance of sampling streams for DOC during high flow periods in order to understand the fate of DOC in streams.  相似文献
