Meiofauna are known to live on hard substrates in association with periphytic and epiphytic algae and attached epibiota; however, the abundance, diversity and colonizing abilities of hard-substrate meiofauna have been poorly documented. We quantified meiofauna living on microalgal-covered pilings associated with a wood pier in a shallow (<2 m deep) estuarine embayment with the use of a suction sampler, and compared colonization of pier-piling and sediment-dwelling meiofauna onto collectors that capture suspended meiofauna from the water column. Collectors were small mesh pads (159 cm3) suspended at mid-water depth, and their size and structural complexity were similar to floating or drifting masses of macroalgae that may be colonized by meiofauna. Sediment was collected by coring, and copepod (to species) and nematode (to genera) colonists on mesh pads were compared with pier-piling and sediment communities. Abundance of total meiofauna averaged 124±13.6 (S.E.) on pier pilings, compared to 2092±274.6 individuals 10 cm−2 in surrounding sediment. Phytal copepods (free-living copepods with prehensile first legs and dorsoventrally and laterally compressed body forms) and copepod nauplii dominated pier-piling collections, but nematodes were dominant on faunal collectors and in sediment. Phytal copepods also were abundant on faunal collectors but were rare in sediments. Copepod and nematode diversities were similar, but species composition was largely nonoverlapping, in pier pilings and sediments. Net recruitment of meiofauna to faunal collectors averaged about 900 individuals collector−1 day−1 during the 1-week experiment. Nematode and copepod colonists on faunal collectors were both much more similar to pier-piling than to sediment assemblages. These data suggest that meiofauna are abundant and diverse on algal-covered pier pilings, and they may become more important to marine ecology as artificial hard substrates increase with increasing urbanization. Furthermore, pier-piling meiofauna appear to readily migrate into the water column and probably contribute to a rapidly dispersing pool of meiofauna in estuaries.  相似文献

Despite frequent disturbances from flow, stream meiofauna form diverse and abundant assemblages suggesting that they are resistant and/or resilient to flow disturbances. Stream flow profoundly influences benthic invertebrate communities but these effects remain poorly understood. We examined the influence of flow on meiofauna colonization at small spatial scales (2–3 m) using artificial streams in conjunction with similar sites (flow, depth, substrates) in the reference stream (Illinois River, Arkansas). Colonization of meiofauna was found to be rapid and generally increased with flow rates examined (1–2, 6–7, and 11–12 cm s−1). Six of the 10 most abundant taxa successfully completed colonization in artificial channels (equaled or exceeded reference benthic densities) within 5 days. Benthic meiofauna were more abundant in fast flows in artificial channels and in fast and slow flows in reference stream sites. A diverse assemblage of meiofauna was collected from the plankton which was dominated by rotifers, copepods (mostly nauplii), dipterans, and cladocerans. Densities of drifting meiofauna (potential colonists of the benthos) were low (5 no. l−1) and similar among artificial channels and reference sites regardless of flow rates (F 1,18 = 2.19, p = 0.1407). Although densities were low, the numbers of drifting meiofauna were more than sufficient to colonize the benthos. Less than 0.65% of the drifting meiofauna were needed to colonize the substrates of artificial streams. The benthic assemblage paralleled that of the plankton, consisting mainly of rotifers, copepods (mainly nauplii), and dipterans. Evidence for active control over dispersal was observed as meiofauna densities varied between the plankton and benthos over the diel cycle (F 1,18 = 6.02, p = 0.0001 and F 1,18 = 9.88, p = 0.006, respectively). Rotifers, copepods, and nematodes were more abundant in the plankton during the day and in the substrates at night. These results suggest that meiofauna assemblages can change rapidly in response to alterations of habitat patches by disturbance.  相似文献

The gastropod Terebralia palustris (Linnaeus) isone of the largest prosobranchs found in tropical intertidal habitats. Theadults form feeding aggregations and frequently dominate the surface of muddysubstrates, where they clearly destabilize the sediment surface. We tested thefollowing hypotheses: 1. The gastropod has negative effects on the density ofinfaunal animals because of potential food competition and/or surface sedimentdisturbance. 2. The disturbance exerted by T. palustrisresults in more variable infaunal assemblages, especially where intensity ofdisturbance is high. To address these hypotheses gastropods were eitherenclosedor excluded from experimental cages, which were randomly assigned to blocks asfar as 300 m apart on an intertidal mudflat in East Africa. Afternine weeks of enclosure the gastropod at high densities clearly affected themeiofauna assemblages. Several meiofauna groups were found in significantlyreduced densities in the presence of the gastropod compared with control cageswithout the gastropods, supporting our primary hypothesis. In cages withoutT. palustris a cyanobacterial carpet developed while thiswas not evident in enclosure cages. T. palustris had nosignificant impact on the macrofauna assemblage. In support of our secondhypothesis, multidimensional scaling ordination (MDS) suggested that there wasan increased variability of meiofauna within cages with high density ofT. palustris.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of different levels of paint-derived tributyltin (TBT), and different modes of exposure, on the diversity, feeding mode and assemblage structure of estuarine nematodes. Estuarine meiofauna were exposed to two types of treatments (mixture and deposit), containing uncontaminated sediment and sediment spiked with paint-derived TBT at 1 and 10 mg kg−1 for a duration of 4 and 8 weeks. In the mixture treatments, meiofauna assemblages were incubated in clean and contaminated sediments. In the deposit treatments meiofauna assemblages were exposed to the deposition of clean and contaminated sediments simulating the disposal of TBT-contaminated dredged material at sea. Effects of TBT on nematode species are likely to occur by (a) the uptake of leached TBT from the sediment pore water through their permeable cuticle, resulting in decreased diversity and increased changes in assemblage structure with increasing levels of TBT contamination, and (b) direct ingestion of paint-particles with food, resulting in a significant decline of nonselective deposit feeders in contaminated sediments. The numbers of many species differed greatly between mixture and deposit treatments. Results from multivariate analyses showed an immediate and dominant effect of burial on most nematode species in the deposit treatments compared to the longer-term effect of TBT contamination. The survival rates of nematode species in the top layer of these sediments depended on their ability to withstand TBT contamination as well as their potential to migrate, survive and reproduce in the deposit. This study unambiguously showed that the response of nematode species depended not only on the level of TBT contamination but also on the duration and mode of exposure to contaminated sediment, which should be taken into account when assessing the effects of TBT on aquatic communities.  相似文献

Benthic invertebrates in a tropical river (Menik Ganga) recolonised denuded substrates within 2–3 weeks, though full diversity was not achieved until 4 weeks. No well defined succession was observed. All taxa apparently colonised at random from drift, upstream and vertical sources. Traps colonised from only one of these sources developed as abundant and diverse a fauna as control traps in 5 weeks. Strong spatial heterogeneity in the number and composition of colonisers was observed between replicate traps. It is suggested that colonisation resulted from random foraging activities and most colonists were derived from veryshort distances.  相似文献

If the primary goal of artificial reef construction is the creation of additional reef habitat that is comparable to adjacent natural rocky-reef, then performance should be evaluated using simultaneous comparisons with adjacent natural habitats. Using baited remote underwater video (BRUV) fish assemblages on purpose-built estuarine artificial reefs and adjacent natural rocky-reef and sand-flat were assessed 18 months post-deployment in three south-east Australian estuaries. Fish abundance, species richness and diversity were found to be greater on the artificial reefs than on either naturally occurring reef or sand-flat in all estuaries. Comparisons within each estuary identified significant differences in the species composition between the artificial and natural rocky-reefs. The artificial reef assemblage was dominated by sparid species including Acanthopagrus australis and Rhabdosargus sarba. The preference for a range of habitats by theses sparid species is evident by their detection on sand-flat, natural rocky reef and artificial reef habitats. The fish assemblage identified on the artificial reefs remained distinct from the adjacent rocky-reef, comprising a range of species drawn from naturally occurring rocky-reef and sand-flat. In addition, some mid-water schooling species including Trachurus novaezelandiae and Pseudocaranx georgianus were only identified on the artificial reef community; presumably as result of the reef''s isolated location in open-water. We concluded that estuarine artificial reef assemblages are likely to differ significantly from adjacent rocky-reef, potentially as a result of physical factors such as reef isolation, coupled with species specific behavioural traits such as the ability of some species to traverse large sand flats in order to locate reef structure, and feeding preferences. Artificial reefs should not be viewed as direct surrogates for natural reef. The assemblages are likely to remain distinct from naturally occurring habitat comprised of species that reside on a range of adjacent natural habitats.  相似文献

The use of fine-grained maintenance dredged material for habitat enhancement has increased in recent years, particularly recharge schemes which provide a means of combating the erosion of intertidal flats and saltmarsh. This article investigates the development of meiofaunal nematode communities following a natural experiment in 2003, when fine-grained dredged material was deposited concurrently at four adjacent intertidal recharge sites on the southeast coast of the United Kingdom. A 12-month survey of nematode assemblages was carried out to compare univariate, multivariate, allometric and functional attributes of colonist communities in relation to the different environmental conditions prevailing at the four sites. Developing assemblages were increasingly affected by the spatial differences in the elevation, consolidation and exposure of bed material. The results indicated that the colonisation sequence was the result of random settling of suspended nematodes, sequential reproduction and differential survival and reproductive success of colonising species. For the first time, this experiment provided insights into the development of adaptive and functional types of meiofaunal nematodes following the intertidal deposition of uncontaminated fine-grained dredged material. This, in turn, will contribute considerably to the development of ecological models of the evolution of the large-scale placement of muddy dredged material in the intertidal environment.  相似文献

Meiofauna are ubiquitous in estuaries worldwide averaging 106 m?2. Abundance and species composition are controlled primarily by three physical factors: sediment particle size, temperature and salinity. While meiofauna are integral parts of estuarine food webs, the evidence that they are biologically controlled is equivocal. Top down (predation) control clearly does not regulate meiofaunal assemblages. Meiofauna reproduce so rapidly and are so abundant that predators cannot significantly reduce population size. Food quantity (bottom up control) also does not appear to limit meiofaunal abundance; there is little data on the effect of food quality. In estuarine sediments meiofauna: (i) facilitate biomineralization of organic matter and enhance nutrient regeneration; (ii) serve as food for a variety of higher trophic levels; and (iii) exhibit high sensitivity to anthropogenic inputs, making them excellent sentinels of estuarine pollution. Generally mineralization of organic matter is enhanced and bacterial production stimulated in the presence of meiofauna. Tannins from mangrove detritus in northern Queensland appear to inhibit meiofaunal abundance and therefore the role of meiofauna in breakdown of the leaves. Meiofauna, particularly copepods, are known foods for a variety of predators especially juvenile fish and the meiofaunal copepods are high in the essential fatty acids required by fish. The copepod’s fatty acid composition is like that of the microphytobenthos they eat; bacterial eaters (nematodes?) do not have the essential fatty acids necessary for fish. Most contaminants in estuaries reside in sediments, and meiofauna are intimately associated with sediments over their entire life-cycle, thus they are increasingly being used as pollution sentinels. Australian estuarine meiofauna research has been concentrated in Queensland, the Hunter River estuarine system in New South Wales, and Victoria’s coastal lagoons. Studies in northern Queensland have primarily concentrated on the role of nematodes in mineralization of organic matter, whereas those from southern Queensland have concentrated on the role of meiofauna as food for fish and as bacterial grazers. The New South Wales studies have concentrated on the Hunter River estuary and on the structure and function of marine nematode communities. In Victoria, several fish have been shown to eat meiofauna. The Australian world of meiofaunal research has hardly been touched; there are innumerable opportunities for meiofaunal studies. In contaminated estuarine sediments reduced trophic coupling between meiofauna and juvenile fish is a basic ecological question of habitat suitability, but also a question with relevance to management of estuarine resources. Because meiofauna have short lifecycles, the effects of a contaminant on the entire life-history can be assessed within a relatively short time. The use of modern molecular biology techniques to assess genetic diversity of meiofauna in contaminated vs uncontaminated sediments is a promising avenue for future research. Much of the important meiofaunal functions take place in very muddy substrata; thus, it is imperative to retain mudflats in estuaries.  相似文献

The nasopharyngeal commensal bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae is also a frequent cause of serious infections. Nasopharyngeal colonisation with S. pneumoniae inhibits subsequent re-colonisation by inducing Th17-cell adaptive responses, whereas vaccination prevents invasive infections by inducing antibodies to S. pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides. In contrast, protection against invasive infection after nasopharyngeal colonisation with mutant S. pneumoniae strains was associated with antibody responses to protein antigens. The role of colonisation-induced Th17-cell responses during subsequent invasive infections is unknown. Using mouse models, we show that previous colonisation with S. pneumoniae protects against subsequent lethal pneumonia mainly by preventing bacteraemia with a more modest effect on local control of infection within the lung. Previous colonisation resulted in CD4-dependent increased levels of Th17-cell cytokines during subsequent infectious challenge. However, mice depleted of CD4 cells prior to challenge remained protected against bacteraemia, whereas no protection was seen in antibody deficient mice and similar protection could be achieved through passive transfer of serum. Serum from colonised mice but not antibody deficient mice promoted phagocytosis of S. pneumoniae, and previously colonised mice were able to rapidly clear S. pneumoniae from the blood after intravenous inoculation. Thus, despite priming for a Th17-cell response during subsequent infection, the protective effects of prior colonisation in this model was not dependent on CD4 cells but on rapid clearance of bacteria from the blood by antibody-mediated phagocytosis. These data suggest that whilst nasopharyngeal colonisation induces a range of immune responses, the effective protective responses depend upon the site of subsequent infection.  相似文献

Estuarine meiofauna communities have been only recently considered to be good indicators of ecological quality, exhibiting several advantages over macrofauna, such as their small size, high abundance, rapid generation times and absence of a planktonic phase. In estuaries we must account not only for a great natural variability along the estuarine gradient (e.g. sediment type and dynamics, oxygen availability, temperature and flow speed) but also for the existence of anthropogenic pressures (e.g. high local population density, presence of harbors and dredging activities).Spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns of meiofauna and free-living marine nematodes were studied in the Mondego estuary (Portugal). Both taxonomic and functional approaches were applied to nematode communities in order to describe the community structure and to relate it with the environmental parameters along the estuary. At all sampling events, nematode assemblages reflected the estuarine gradient, and salinity and grain size composition were confirmed to be the main abiotic factors controlling the distribution of the assemblages. Moreover, the low temporal variability may indicate that natural variability is superimposed by the anthropogenic pressures present in some areas of the estuary. The characterization of both meiofauna and nematode assemblages highlighted the usefulness of the integration of both taxonomic and functional attributes, which must be taken into consideration when assessing the ecological status of estuaries.  相似文献

Long-term changes in a benthic assemblage associated with artificial reefs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term development of a hard bottom benthic assemblage over a period of 20 years in an area off the mouth of a large river. The artificial reef of Fregene was selected because benthic assemblage data were available for the period 1981–1992. This artificial reef is located in the mid Tyrrhenian Sea, 5 nautical miles north of the two mouths of the Tevere River (Latium, Italy) and 1.5 nautical miles offshore from Fregene (Rome, Italy). The artificial reef was deployed in March 1981 for fisheries enhancement in 10–14 m of water on a sandy-silty seabed. The Tevere River carries suspended materials and a heavy load of organics since it transports Rome’s effluent, resulting in the eutrophic state of area waters. Benthic sampling was conducted in 2001 by SCUBA diving; two standard surfaces of 400 cm2 were scraped from the vertical walls of the same uppermost block in four different periods. All organisms were identified and counted. The methodology used is the same as that adopted in the previous periods, so that the 2001 data could be compared with past collected data. The benthic assemblage was analysed by cluster analysis using the Bray-Curtis index and clustered using the group average clustering algorithm. The SIMPER procedure was used to identify those taxa that characterize each station group identified by cluster analysis. Changes in benthic assemblages and hydrological trends of the Tevere River were investigated using the cumulative sum series method. The 20-year development of the benthic community, starting from the new substratum, is composed of different phases characterised by different benthic assemblages. In particular five different phases were distinguished: 1. Pioneer species recruitment (May 1981–June 1981); 2. Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussel) dominance (August 1981–November 1983); 3. M. galloprovincialis regression (July 1984–October 1985); 4. M. galloprovincialis absence (91–92); 5. Bryozoans bioconstruction dominance (2001). The dynamic succession of the observed benthic assemblages exhibited a good relation with the Tevere River flow. The Tevere River flow, and the subsequent sedimentation process, seems to have strongly influenced the benthic assemblage succession of the Fregene artificial reef. Guest editors: G. Relini & J. The surface sediments collected from the intertidal and shallow marine (0–20 m) regimes of Jason Bay, South China Sea contain calcareous nannoplankton assemblages in whichGephyrocapsa oceanica comprises 99% of the assemblage. The calcareous nannoplankton diversity is very low and the abundance of species tends to increase with both depth and distance offshore and becomes abundant in samples from water depths of 18 m and 20 m.Emiliania huxleyi is absent from all studied samples. The sediments from the intertidal regime contained rare calcareous nannoplankton.  相似文献

Trampling paths are a feature of estuarine habitats in southeastern Australia. An experimental investigation quantified the impact of trampling over a 3 year period on the microhabitat features and macrofaunal assemblages in a temperate mangrove forest in New South Wales, Australia. The magnitude of the impact varied between 0 and 25 passes (representing a visit by 25 people), which reduced the biomass of the Bostrychia–Caloglossa algal association by 50%. The frequency of trampling varied between one and four, simulating a single and seasonal visits by a group of people to the mangrove forest. The main impact of trampling was an alteration to the microhabitat structures of the forest floor including a decrease in the number and vertical height of pneumatophores, an increase in the proportion of bent and broken pneumatophores in trampled lanes and a decrease in the biomass of the epiphytic Bostrychia–Caloglossa algal association. The macrofauna most impacted by trampling were the gastropods most commonly associated with the pneumatophores and algal assemblages and included Ophicardelus spp. and Assiminea buccinoides. Those gastropods least impacted by trampling were commonly associated with the surface of the sediment or were known to move over the surface and included Bembicium auratum and Cassidula zonata. There was little impact on the main burrowing crab, Heloecius cordiformis. There were some indirect impacts of trampling with the recruitment of Ophicardelus spp. Assiminea buccinoides and Salinator solida reduced in the subsequent year after trampling had ceased. People can create walking paths in mangrove forests that have long term effects on the habitat. An appropriate management emphasis may lie in maintaining the structural features of the habitat.  相似文献

An enduring challenge for community ecologists is to understand how different assemblages of species are derived from a common pool of potential colonists. Early colonisers can affect the ability of subsequent arrivals to colonise and persist, and thereby influence the development and structure of the resulting assemblage. In two independent experiments, we tested for such historical effects of priority on the assemblages of mobile fauna colonising artificial seagrass initially occupied by epibiota (algae and sessile invertebrates) and/or predatory Palaemonid shrimp. Multivariate analyses detected strong priority effects of both epibiota and Palaemonids on the structure of faunal assemblages as early as 5 days, and up to 45 days after experimental treatments were established, even though initial conditions (i.e. abundances of epibiota and Palaemonids) had become similar among treatments. The abundances of key taxa, identified by SIMPER analyses as those taxa contributing the most to multivariate differences among treatments, were typically enhanced where epibiota were initially present. In contrast, prior colonisation by Palaemonid shrimp produced subtle and variable effects on individual taxa. Nevertheless, these experiments provide evidence for priority effects and demonstrate how variation in the structure of contemporary assemblages can be intimately linked with key historical events that occurred during their development, but may no longer be apparent. Consequently, our ability to interpret variation among contemporary assemblages may be enhanced when contemporary patterns are viewed within an historical context.  相似文献

Artificial benthic collectors have been widely used for the assessment of settlement rates of decapod crustaceans. However, to date no consistent works have addressed spatial patterns of settlement in different estuarine habitats, and no specific studies targeted the interaction of artificial surfaces with the surrounding natural substrate. It may be expected that the artificial surface may produce a different thigmotactic response when compared to the natural substrate, which may limit the use of this technique for assessment of natural settlement rates. In this study the settlement rates of megalopae of the estuarine crab Carcinus maenas were addressed, specifically deploying artificial benthic collectors in different habitats both intertidal and subtidal in the lower Mira estuary. A number of experiments were performed concerning stratification and temporal fluctuations of settlement. Further, the interaction of collector surface with the surrounding substrate was investigated, by comparing settlement rates in natural and artificial substrates in different habitats. Results have shown significant differences in settlement between different estuarine habitats, both in spatially replicated experiments and in a high-resolution temporal experiment. However, comparison between settlement rates in artificial and natural substrates has shown that there is a strong interference between collectors and surrounding substrate, limiting interpretation of results concerning settlement rates in artificial substrate alone.  相似文献

Plants that lack floral rewards may nevertheless attract pollinators by mimicking the flowers of rewarding plants. It has been suggested that both mimics and models should suffer reduced fitness when mimics are abundant relative to their models. By manipulating the relative densities of an orchid mimic Disa nivea and its rewarding model Zaluzianskya microsiphon in small experimental patches within a larger population we demonstrated that the mimic does indeed suffer reduced pollination success when locally common relative to its model. Behavioural experiments suggest that this phenomenon results from the tendency of the long-proboscid fly pollinator to avoid visits to neighbouring plants when encountering the mimic. No negative effect of the mimic on the pollination success of the model was detected. We propose that changes in pollinator flight behaviour, rather than pollinator conditioning, are likely to account for negative frequency-dependent reproductive success in deceptive orchids.  相似文献

The meiobenthos inhabiting an intertidal mud bar were disturbed by hand-turning the sediment of a 9-m2 area with a shovel and monitoring the subsequent recolonization process. The immediate impact of the disturbance on this community dominated by Nematoda (91%), Copepoda (4%) and Foraminifera (4%), was to remove more than 70% of the meiofauna. However, after only one tidal cycle, total numbers of nematodes, copepods, foraminiferans and other meiofauna taxa were at predisturbance and control (similar 9-m2 site on the same flat) density values. Nematode species assemblages rapidly adapted to the disturbance and changed little over time. Foraminifera showed insignificant fluidized flocculent upper layer of sediment was probably the major dispersal mechanism in this community, and foraminiferans seem to be the least able to use this mechanism. The meiobenthos of this habitat is described as a well-dispersed and dynamic community able to rapidly adjust to small-scale disturbances. However, the meiobenthos may not recover from all disturbances, because resilience was only determined for a limited physical disturbance.  相似文献
