The overwhelming predominance of dextral coiling in gastropods is an outstanding and puzzling phenomenon. A few sinistral specimens (left coiling individuals) have been found in many dextral species. Only six sinistral shells have ever been found in Cerion; we base this analysis on the five available shells. We ask whether reversed symmetry is a simple either-or switch without further consequences for shell form, or whether sinistrality engenders associated effects, making left-coiling shells unlike their dextral deme-mates in other ways. All five sinistral shells differ in features of size and coiling late in growth, leading to relatively small apertures and a slight twist in the axis of coiling. We detect and measure this effect as follows: in multivariate morphospace, sinistrals occupy peripheral positions among their dextral deme-mates; in univariate analysis, sinistrals are consistently different for a set of characters involving covariance patterns never before seen in a decade of studies on ontogenetic and age-standardized variation in dextrals; a bootstrap procedure does not recover similar patterns in randomly constituted samples of dextrals matching the true sinistral distribution; direct x-ray measures of the coiling axis detect its slight twist in sinistrals. We discuss the implications of these unsuspected associations for the issues of developmental constraint upon the evolution of morphology.  相似文献

Shell rotating behavior of the hermit crabPagurus geminus was investigated. In preliminary observations, hermit crabs motivated to change shells rotated presented shells, filled with sand, in a way that dislodged the inside material. In order to determine if this behavior is stereotyped, or flexible and dependent on shell type, hermit crabs were tested with ordinary dextral shells ofLatirulus nagasakiensis and sinistral shells ofAntiplanes contraria. Sinistral shells are not normally encountered by hermit crabs. Their rotation of the dextral shell to the left was adequate for sand discharge. Sinistral shells were rotated in both directions. Analysis of recorded videotapes showed that variation in rotation direction could be attributed to variation in the position of the crab relative to the shell. When the crab faced the shell aperture from the inner lip, it rotated the sinistral shell to the right, and to opposite direction when it faced from the outer lip side. The crab always pushed the upper side of the horizontally laid shell, regardless of shell type or its own position.  相似文献

Ovarian development in sexual and parthenogenetic geckos of the Heteronotia binoei complex was analysed quantitatively by gross and histological examination. Females were classified into one of four stages of the reproductive cycle: non-reproductive, preovulatory, postovulatory and postoviposition. Parthenogens had significantly more developing follicles present in the ovaries than sexual females in non-reproductive, preovulatory and postovulatory stages of the reproductive cycle. The larger number of developing follicles in parthenogenetic Heteronotia was correlated with the significantly larger body size of the parthenogenetic females at the localities examined. Maximum follicular size and rates of follicular atresia were not significantly different between sexual and parthenogenetic females. These findings raise the possibility that the reproductive output of the parthenogenetic females may be higher than that of sympatric sexual females at these localities due to an increase in follicular recruitment. Based on this evidence, we predict that at these localities parthenogenetic females produce more clutches of two eggs than sexual females. If viability is equal, this would enhance the reproductive advantage of parthenogens over the two-fold level already present. In all other respects, the morphology of the ovaries appeared very similar between parthenogenetic and sexual females and was typical of geckos.  相似文献

Summary

Gonadal maturation, spawning, fecundity and timing of reproduction of the snail Cerithidea cingulata in a brackish water pond in Molo, Iloilo, Philippines, are described. Snails 4–41 mm in shell length were sampled monthly from May 1997 to May 1998; 25% were <25 mm, 67% were 20–30 mm, and 8% were >30 mm. The sexes are separate and could first be distinguished at 15 mm. Males are aphallic, have narrower shells than females of the same length, and have bright yellow-orange testes overlying the digestive gland deep inside the shell. Females have more robust shells, an ovipositor at the right side of the foot, and yellow-green ovaries overlying the digestive gland. The sex ratio was one male to two females in the pond population studied. Gonadal maturation was monitored by means of gonadosomatic index (GSI, gonad weight as a percent of visceral weight); maturation stages were based on the gonad appearance (immature, developing, mature) and histology (immature, developing, mature, redeveloping). GSI increased with snail size, and reached 16% in a 33-mm female. The smallest mature males and females were 18–19 mm, and most snails >20 mm were mature, spawning, or redeveloping. Histological sections showed all stages of gametogenesis in mature male snails. The oocyte size-frequency distributions in mature females showed mostly mature oocytes and secondary oocytes, but also oogonia and primary oocytes. GSI and the frequency of snails at different maturation stages varied over the year. Both GSI and the frequency of mature snails were highest during the summer months, April to August. Nevertheless, mature snails occurred throughout the whole year, as did mating and egg-laying. Fecundity (= number of oocytes >70 pμ) increased with size in mature females 2041 mm; an average 25-mm female produced about 1,500 oocytes and larger females produced a maximum of about 2,500 oocytes. Eggs strings laid on the pond bottom were 45–75 mm long; an average 64-mm string contained 2,000 eggs 210+20 pm in diameter. The density of eggs strings was highest (80–120/m2) during March-September. Eggs hatched after 6–7 d into planktonic veligers, which in turn settle on the pond bottom 11–12 d later as juveniles. Juveniles 2–6-mm long were most abundant in the pond during August-October.  相似文献

The dwarf morph of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Telmatochromis temporalis uses empty snail shells as shelters and breeding sites in shell beds, in which many empty shells exist. Here, we assessed selection forces regulating body size in this fish. Field observations showed that large males tended to have a greater number of females in their territories, suggesting that sexual selection favours large males. Nonetheless, a transplant experiment suggested that male body size was limited by the ability to hide in empty shells from large piscivorous fish. In females, the number of ovarian eggs increased with body size, suggesting that fecundity selection favours large females. However, females are smaller than males. Females spawned eggs close to the apices inside the shells. The small space there would decrease the risk of egg predation by egg predators, and small body size of females may be a result of adaptation to spawn eggs in the small, safe spaces. This study provides support for the idea that male and female body sizes have been limited by different ecological pressures (predation on adult fish in males, predation on eggs in females), which has not been reported previously in any animal.  相似文献

The present study documents for the first time shell use by juvenile fiddler crabs in the salt marsh. Twenty visits were made to six salt marsh sites at Tybee Island, Georgia between 2007 and 2009. One hundred empty Littorina irrorata shells were collected at each site on each field trip. Juvenile carapace width was measured, crabs sexed, and species identification completed using RFLP analysis. Shell use of up to 79% was observed. Two species of fiddler crabs were found in empty shells, Uca pugnax and U. pugilator. U. pugnax was the dominant species at all sites representing 62-84% of the juvenile fiddler crab population. Juvenile sex ratios were female-biased (1.7:1) at all six sites. Juvenile size did not vary significantly between species but males of both species were significantly larger than females. Size frequency distribution of carapace width revealed that shell use varied with size and sex. In the 3 to 4 mm size class, juvenile females outnumbered juvenile males in empty L. irrorata shells while in the 5 to 6 mm size class and greater, juvenile males outnumbered juvenile females in shells. Significantly more juvenile fiddler crabs were found in empty shells during flood than ebb tide at 3 of the sites. This discovery illuminates the resourcefulness of juvenile fiddler crabs and provides another mechanism that might enhance survival.  相似文献

The lipid metabolism was investigated during six gonotrophic cycles of Aedes aegypti. Females of constant body size were analyzed for their total lipid content: large females with a body size of 41.06 (wing length cubed) and small females with 15.63. Their lipid contents at eclosion were compared to lipid values after two days of sugar-feeding, shortly before a blood meal, after oviposition, of their total egg batches, and again before the next blood meal, with intermittent access to sugar for two days for six gonotrophic cycles.Large females transferred most of their pre-blood meal lipid into the ovaries. Their low lipid content after oviposition was restored by synthesis from intermittent sugar meals. After the third gonotrophic cycle, they withheld more and more of the resynthesized lipid in their fat body, thus gradually reducing their fecundity. Since blood consumption was not altered significantly during these six cycles, age-related reduction of fecundity was clearly caused by limitations of yolk lipid.Small females transferred a considerably smaller, but constant segment of sugar-derived lipids to the ovaries. In both size classes, lipid content per oocyte was constant throughout all cycles with 9 mcal/oocyte in large and 7 mcal/oocyte in small females. Total fecundity reached 450 eggs in large and 280 eggs in small females. Large females that were maintained on water without sucrose took large blood meals from which part of the yolk lipid was synthesized. Extrapolations suggest that only one or two additional gonotrophic cycles would be possible without additional carbohydrate sources, despite lipogenesis from blood protein.  相似文献

The egg load of lab-cultured Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary koinobiont endoparasitoid of noctuid caterpillars, was determined in this study. Information on egg load may provide clues to more efficient in vivo rearing of C. marginiventris. I tested the hypothesis that egg load, defined as the number of mature oöcytes (i.e., fully chorionated eggs) found in adult females, was related to body size. Cotesia marginiventris females possessed two ovaries and two ovarioles per ovary; mature eggs were found in ovaries and oviducts. Newly-emerged females held an average of 149 mature eggs. Immature eggs were slightly visible in the distal portions of the ovarioles; they were not counted. Egg load was marginally related to body size (i.e., hind tibia length). The results of this study suggest that (1) body size can sometimes predict egg load or potential fecundity of lab-cultured C. marginiventris and (2) an efficient rearing system that exploits the potential fecundity of C. marginiventris might involve using young females and allowing them to oviposit in new hosts, each day, for up to a week.  相似文献

Chemical signals originating from the ovaries of gravid females of Musca domestica (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha: Muscidae) attract ovipositing females to common egg-laying sites. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran containing ovaries from reproductively mature houseflies. Females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran than wet wheat bran. This effect was additive with the attraction to housefly ovaries. Solvent extracts from housefly ovaries were attractive to gravid females. Extracts obtained with hexane were most attractive to gravid females for egg laying, and extracts obtained with ethyl acetate attracted more egg laying than extracts obtained by dichloromethane. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were the main components of the hexane extracts. Both tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were shown to elicit dose-dependent aggregation of gravid females in oviposition bioassays, but high doses of either chemical were not attractive.  相似文献

Specific chemicals in the environment evoke significant changes in the behavior of many aquatic organisms. We studied in the laboratory whether satiated individuals of the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus Say 1817, adjust their investigatory behavior towards an empty, optimal gastropod shell according to differences of chemical context. We also explored to what extent shell investigation by a crab in the same hunger state was affected by occupying an inadequately sized shell. Our results confirmed in part previous findings that crabs can discriminate the odor of freshly dead snails from the odor of freshly dead conspecifics. In the presence of the former odor, crabs inhabiting shells of inadequate size were more responsive and active than those in better-fitting shells. To the contrary, regardless of the quality of the inhabited shell, P. longicarpus remained practically motionless when presented with the odor of freshly dead conspecifics, possibly because the risks of incurring in predators would outweigh the benefits of acquiring a new shell. Unexpectedly, we found that crabs in both types of shell quality exhibited nearly the same behavior in control water, while crabs in adequate shells were more responsive in the presence of food odor. Individuals appeared insensitive to the odor of live snails; indeed, only one hermit crab species has been seen removing living snails from their shells. An intriguing result was that water conditioned by the odors of live conspecifics exerted a strong effect on all the individuals by inducing an intense shell investigation. Our study underlines the central role exerted by chemical detection in hermit crabs' behavior and demonstrates the existence of a complex interplay among chemical context, the physiological state of the animal, and the ecological pressures of the habitat.

The interaction between the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus, and the shell epibiont, Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, varies from mutualism to parasitism based on the environmental context. We tested the hypothesis that this interaction also varies as a function of hermit crab sex. Given that recent work showed a negative effect of Hydractinia on female reproduction, we predicted a greater frequency of males in Hydractinia shells in the field and a stronger preference by males than females for shells with Hydractinia. Field collections documented a significantly greater proportion of males than females occupying shells with Hydractinia, and a significantly greater proportion of ovigerous females than non-ovigerous females in shells with Hydractinia. In laboratory shell-switching experiments, a greater proportion of males than females chose to enter shells with Hydractinia, but there was no difference in the proportions of males and females that vacated shells with Hydractinia. We examined whether the presence of Hydractinia influenced predation rates. Blue crabs fed on more than twice as many hermit crabs in shells with Hydractinia as compared to bare shells, but there was no significant difference for stone crabs. Laboratory experiments showed that the force required to crush shells was significantly greater for shells without Hydractinia. Thus, the lower occupancy and preference exhibited by females than males for shells with Hydractinia appears to result both from the decreased reproduction shown in past studies and an increase in predation risk.  相似文献

Reproductive females manipulate offspring phenotypes by modifying conditions during embryogenesis. In ectotherms, the environmental control over embryogenesis is often realized by changes in maternal thermoregulation during gravidity. To determine if reproduction influences thermoregulatory behavior in species where females lay eggs shortly after fertilization (strict oviparity), we compared preferred body temperatures (Tp) between reproductive (egg-laying) and non-reproductive female newts, Ichthyosaura alpestris. Next, we exposed reproductive females to temperatures mimicking Tp ranges of reproductive and non-reproductive individuals to find out whether the maternally modified thermal regime influences ovum and jelly coat volume, and early cleavage rates at the time of oviposition. In the thermal gradient, reproductive females maintained their body temperatures within a narrower range than non-reproductive individuals. The exposure of ovipositing females to temperatures preferred during their reproductive and non-reproductive period had a negligible influence on egg size and early cleavage rates. We conclude that the modification of maternal thermoregulatory behavior provides a limited opportunity to manipulate egg traits in newts.  相似文献

Summary Sixty female Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) spawned in shipboard experiments and the interval between egg-laying and ecdysis was noted. The number of eggs laid per female ranged from 263–3662, most females produced only one batch of eggs before moulting, and the post-spawn ovaries of all females contained few, if any, mature oocytes. As reported in other studies, the total number of eggs produced per female was not well correlated with body size. Females appeared to spawn at all times during the moulting cycle and although no diurnal rhythm in spawning was observed, moulting occurred mainly at night-time despite the animals being kept in near-constant darkness. No evidence of synchronous moutling was detected.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Effects of egg availability on daily ovipositional activity were determined for Coccophagus atratus Compere (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). Females were observed for 6 h per day for their entire adult lives. Observed ovipositional activity was analysed in relation to egg maturation before and after emergence, egg depletion during oviposition and egg replenishment after oviposition. Ovipositional activity, including oviposition, inconsequential probes and searching for hosts, occurred predominantly in the first 30 min of exposure to hosts on the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th and 13th days after emergence. The remaining time was spent on non-ovipositional activities (preening, drinking honeydew and sitting on the glass of the experimental arena). Peaks of ovipositional activity were associated with high numbers of mature eggs in the ovaries. Eggs that remained in the ovaries after a bout of oviposition were apparently not mature even though they had attained their maximum size. Non-ovipositional activity continued until females had built up a reserve of about eighteen mature eggs. After each successive bout of oviposition, the rate of oogenesis slowed down. Consequently females took longer to accumulate a supply of eggs and periods of non-ovipositional activity increased.
We conclude that (1) the availability of eggs and the tendency of females to store mature eggs influences ovipositional activity, (2) full-sized eggs are not necessarily mature, (3) future experiments with C.atratus could be restricted to days of high ovipositional activity, and (4) the terms syn- and pro-ovigenic formulated by Flanders (1950) to describe apparent differences in oogenesis between various parasitic Hymenoptera do not apply to C. atratus and are therefore not universally applicable.  相似文献

Summary The genetics of body asymmetry inLymnaea peregra follows a maternal mode of inheritance involving a single locus with dextrality being dominant to sinistrality. Maternal inheritance implies that all members of a brood have the same phenotype, however, some broods contain a few individuals of opposite coil. One purpose of this paper is to explain the origin of these anomalous individuals. Genetic analyses of sinistral broods with a few dextral individuals have led to the development of a cross-over model, with the anomalous dextrals originating as a consequence of crossing over either during meiosis or mitosis in the female germ line. The crossover either reconstitutes the dextral gene from previously dissociated parts, or creates a dextral gene by means of a position effect. The probability of a crossover event depends upon the appropriate combination of complementary sinistral chromosomes. Each crossover event has the potential of creating a unique dextral gene. Genetic analyses of dextral broods containing a few sinistral individuals have demonstrated that different dextral genes vary in penetrance. The dextral gene produces a product during oogenesis which influences the pattern of cleavage in the embryo; this cleavage pattern is translated into the appropriate body asymmetry. The other purpose of this paper is to provide an assay for this gene product. Cytoplasm from dextral eggs injected into uncleaved sinistral eggs causes these eggs to cleave in a dextral pattern. Cytoplasm from sinistral eggs has no effect on the cleavage pattern of dextral eggs. While the dextral gene product is made during oogenesis, it does not function in controlling cleavage until just before this process begins.  相似文献

The paucity of sinistral (left-coiling) relative to dextral (right-coiling) species of gastropods in the marine realm is an enigma. In Conus , one of the most diverse marine animal genera, sinistral shell coiling has evolved as a species-wide character only once. Fossils of this species, Conus adversarius , are found in Upper Pliocene and lowermost Pleistocene deposits in the southeastern USA. Conus adversarius had nonplanktonic larval development; this may have been a critical factor for the early establishment of the species, as well as sinistral marine species in other clades. Notably, most specimens of aberrantly sinistral modern Conus are derived from typically dextral species that have nonplanktonic development. If C. adversarius was reproductively isolated from dextral conspecifics, then this species may provide an example of nearly instantaneous sympatric speciation in the fossil record. Furthermore, the common and widespread – while geologically short-lived – fossil shells of C. adversarius show large amounts of variability in form and this variation may be related, at least in part, to a pleiotropic effect associated with the reversed coiling direction of this species.  相似文献

Females of Lucilia cuprina from field populations and from normally maintained laboratory cultures are anautogenous. Normal anautogenous females were compared with females from a laboratory selected autogenous strain especially as regards protein storage and ovarian protein content. The following differences were found: (1) autogenous females at emergence from the puparium contain about 1 mg (20%) more protein than anautogenous females of equal fresh weight, (2) about 70% of this additional protein is accounted for by increased protein content of the abdominal larval fat body, (3) the larval fat body of autogenous females has greater volume and greater protein content per unit volume than that of anautogenous females, (4) the greater volume of larval fat body in autogenous females is the result of increased cell size rather than cell number, (5) the protein content of the ovaries of mature non-protein-fed autogenous females is about 1 mg. That of non-protein-fed anautogenous females of similar age is negligible, (6) the larval fat body of non-protein-fed anautogenous females disappears more rapidly after emergence than does that of autogenous females.  相似文献

Females of the yellow swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus, were reared in the laboratory. They were divided into four groups held under different mating conditions: nonmating (virgin) and mated once, twice, and three times. The number of eggs in the ovaries was counted by dissection. Virgin females produced increasing numbers of mature eggs, up to about 30, in the week following emergence. When the female had mated once, the number of mature eggs was significantly higher than that of virgin females by the second day after emergence. However, the double- and triplemated females did not increase the number of eggs in each state further than the singlemated females. The double-mated females deposited significantly more eggs than the singlemated females in the laboratory. The triplemated females also deposited more eggs on the day after the third mating than the doublemated females. Thus, multiple matings increased the number of eggs deposited. The change in the hatchability and the morphology of the spermatophore in the bursa copulatrix suggested that the sperm from the last mating had precedence.  相似文献

Ovigerous hermit crabs, Clibanarius vittatus (Bosc), were examined in the laboratory to (1) determine if the time of larval release is a synchronous event, (2) determine the influence of a damaged gastropod shell during the egg hatching process, and (3) describe larval release behaviors. Ovigerous hermit crabs from natural light:dark (LD) and tidal cycles were moved to constant conditions 2-3 days prior to the predicted time of larval release. Larval release was synchronous, occurring near the time of expected sunset. Females with early-stage embryos placed under constant conditions displayed a free-running circadian rhythm, suggesting that the rhythm is under endogenous control. Hermit crabs with early-stage embryos that were placed under a shifted LD cycle (advanced 12 h relative to the ambient photoperiod) before being placed under constant conditions advanced their larval release rhythm by 12 h, indicating the rhythm can be entrained by the LD cycle. Hermit crabs with an intact shell released larvae in bursts at sunset over several consecutive nights (period = 24.2 h). In contrast, hermit crabs with damaged shells released larvae at different times over the course of a single day. Ovigerous females with intact shells exhibit several stereotypical hatching behaviors. The female stands on her walking legs and thrusts her abdomen, moving the shell in an oscillating motion. This movement may assist in breaking the outer membrane of the egg case. The female generates a water current inside the shell with her scaphognathite and mouthparts, which transports the newly hatched larvae out of the shell. Females in damaged shells did not display these behaviors; instead, larval release was a prolonged event with little movement of the female, and often the newly hatched larvae were not viable. These results indicate that an intact shell plays an important role in the hatching process for this hermit crab.  相似文献
