A quantitative evaluation of stream temperature alterations due to a commercial forest harvesting practice and a research treatment is presented. Summer maximum stream temperatures averaged 1 ° C higher in the commercial clearcut and 9 °C higher in the clearcut-herbicided watershed than in the forested control. The largest average monthly temperature increase on the commercial clearcut (2.2 °C) occurred during April; on the clearcut-herbicided basin it occurred during June (10.5 °C). Significant changes in stream temperature were observed on both watersheds as early as February and as late as November. Changes in minimum stream temperatures are presented in detail along with the impact on diel temperature fluctuations. Changes in the stream temperature regimes of the clearcut watersheds from the headwaters to the mouth of the watersheds are also given. Potential impacts of the stream temperature alterations on aquatic ecosystems are summarized in relation to stress limits for brook trout and other organisms. Comprehending the size distribution within a population and grasping its connection to tree maturation (onset of reproductive phase) is pivotal for formulating sustainable management strategies and conserving numerous tree species. The objective of this study was to compare the structure and probability of fruit production of Carapa guianensis in two types of forest (varzea, or floodplain, vs. terra firme, or upland) in the northeastern Amazon, Brazil. The study was conducted in four permanent plots of 300 × 300 m (two for each type of forest). All individuals ≥10 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) were mapped and measured for DBH, height, and canopy characteristics (shape and position), and liana infestation. Sixty-seven trees were inventoried in the upland forest and 297 in the floodplain forest. The trees were larger in the upland (33.36 ± 1.84 cm) than in the floodplain (21.92 ± 1.5 cm) and more than half (56%) of the upland trees and more than two thirds (67%) of floodplain trees were reproductive. The minimum diameter for fruit production in the floodplain (10.2 cm of DBH) was more than two times smaller than in the upland (25.5 cm of DBH). The probability of fruit production of a tree of the same size was twice as high in the floodplain compared with the upland, and trees with rounded canopies had a higher probability of fruit production in the upland. Our results showed that the probability of fruit production can be modeled with variables of tree size and canopy shape, and that intrinsic factors of the forests influence the reproductive maturity of C. guianensis which presents greater precocity and productive potential of seeds in the estuarine floodplain forest of the Amazon River.  相似文献

Gibberellin A1 (GA1), GA3 and GA4 inhibited the sprouting of nondormant bulbils of Chinese yam, Dioscorea opposita, where the effectiveness of the GAs was as follows: GA4>GA1+GA3. Uniconazole and prohexadione, plant growth retardants, promoted the sprouting of half-dormant bulbils. By contrast, these retardants inhibited the sprouting of nondormant bulbils. Gibberellin A3 (GA3) and A4 (GA4) which were applied to the stems of the sprouted bulbils, promoted stem elongation, but GAs applied to the bulbous parts inhibited this process. The effectiveness of the GAs on stem elongation was as follows: GA3+GA4 for the promotion and GA4 > GA3 for the inhibition. Uniconazole applied to the stem inhibited the stem elongation of the sprouted bulbils. These results suggest the possible involvement of endogenous GAs in the induction and maintenance of bulbil dormancy of D. opposita, as well as in the bulbil sprouting and subsequent stem elongation.  相似文献

Four gibberelJins (GAs), GA19, GA20, GA24, and GA53, were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) from the dormant bulbils of Dioscorea japonica Thunb. ex Murray (Japanese yam), suggesting that two biosynthetic pathways of GAs, early 13- and non-13-hydroxylation pathways, are operating in the bulbils. In the Pacific Northwest, previous studies have found a negative effect of timber management on the abundance of stream amphibians, but results have been variable and region specific. These studies have generally used survey methods that did not account for differences in capture probability and focused on stands that were harvested under older management practices. We examined the influences of contemporary forest practices on larval Dicamptodon tenebrosus as part of the Hinkle Creek paired watershed study. We used a mark–recapture analysis to estimate D. tenebrosus density at 100 1-m sites spread throughout the basin and used extended linear models that accounted for correlation resulting from the repeated surveys at sites across years. Density was associated with substrate, but we found no evidence of an effect of harvest. While holding other factors constant, the model-averaged estimates indicated; 1) each 10% increase in small cobble or larger substrate increased median density of D. tenebrosus 1.05 times, 2) each 100-ha increase in the upstream area drained decreased median density of D. tenebrosus 0.96 times, and 3) increasing the fish density in the 40 m around a site by 0.01 increased median salamander density 1.01 times. Although this study took place in a single basin, it suggests that timber management in similar third-order basins of the southwestern Oregon Cascade foothills is unlikely to have short-term effects of D. tenebrosus larvae. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Air potato, Dioscorea bulbifera, is an invasive, herbaceous, climbing vine, which dominates invaded native vegetation in Florida. The fortuitous discovery of Lilioceris sp. near impressa defoliating D. bulbifera vines and feeding on the bulbils (aerial tubers) in the Katmandu Valley of Nepal initiated a project to assess the potential of this leaf beetle for biological control of air potato in Florida. Quarantine host specificity tests were conducted on 41 plant species in 24 families and 13 orders, with 26 species outside of the Dioscoreaceae and 15 species within the Dioscoreaceae. Adults test fed (nibbled) on 4/12 of tested Dioscorea species, but no larval feeding or development occurred on any plant other than the target, D. bulbifera. The larvae feed gregariously and quickly skeletonize offered leaves of air potato. Air potato bulbils that received any feeding damage to the primary meristematic region did not sprout. The ability of the beetle larvae and adults to feed on the bulbils is important because in Florida, the plant rarely flowers or produces fruit, so these aerial tubers are the primary means of persistence and spread. The adults can live for several months without food. This extremely specialized herbivore from part of the weed's native range appears to have great promise as a biological control of air potato.  相似文献

As yam bulbils (Dioscorea batatas Decne.) grow on the motherplants, dormancy of the bulbils develops gradually. This isevidenced by the fact that the sproutability of bulbils decreasedin proportion to their sizes, 2–4 mm to 8–12 mmin diameter when bulbils are detached and sown in Petri dishes.This decreasing sproutability was seen until the stratificationat 5°C for dormancy release was completed. During the growth process of attached bulbils, the contentsof batatasins I and II increased markedly per surface area andper bulbil although on a fresh weight basis they remained constant.The increases of batatasin III and abscisic acid (ABA) weremore striking and were evident in all comparisons. These results corresponded to different localization of batatasinsand ABA in bulbil issues. All of 3 batatasins were localizedin the outermost layers of the bulbils, whereas ABA was distributedevenly throughout their tissues. To understand the evolution of clonal reproduction and the diversity of clonal plants, it is necessary to clarify the characteristics of each clonal habit. There has been little research on whether bulbils alter spatial genetic structure (SGS) because of the lack of connection to maternal ramets. We used simple-sequence-repeat (SSR) markers to determine the fine-scale SGS of the dioecious plant Dioscorea japonica, which disperses both as bulbils and as seeds. We also evaluated the contributions of sexual and clonal reproduction and tested for spatial sex segregation (SSS). We discovered 111 genets from 394 ramets in a 2.8-ha plot. Genotypic richness (R = 0.28) and clonal diversity (Simpson’s D = 0.94, Fager’s E = 0.90) were high. We did not find SSS, suggesting that the population does not suffer from a shortage of mating pairs due to clonal reproduction. The Sp values revealed moderate SGS at the genet level (Sp = 0.013–0.014), and the genets intermingled at a local scale. Significant SGS at the ramet level showed that ramets within the same genet tended to aggregate. We also found a skewed clonal spatial distribution. The spatial extent of genets was positively correlated with the number of ramets within a genet. The contribution of bulbil production to the variance of parent–offspring gene dispersal was about one–fifth the contribution from sexual reproduction. These results suggest that the dispersal via bulbils affects the SGS in D. japonica, although its contribution to gene dispersal is small compared to the contribution of sexual reproduction.  相似文献

Riparian forest plantings are a well‐established restoration technique commonly used to stabilize banks and intercept nutrient flow from adjacent agricultural fields. Tree species planted for these efforts may not reflect mature forest communities within the same region. Given contemporary research on links between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, we conducted a leaf‐litter decomposition study to investigate how mixing of detrital resources that reflect forest community composition would regulate in‐stream leaf litter. Leaf litter bags containing material from a mature forest (Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer rubrum, Quercus rubra, full factorial treatments = 7) and a restored riparian forest (Cornus sericea, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Platanus occidentalis, full factorial treatments = 7) were deployed in a stream reach that experienced riparian reforestation in 2004. Litter from the restored riparian community had less mass remaining (45.28 ± 2.27%) than that from the mature riparian community (54.95 ± 2.19%) after 5 weeks. In addition, mixed litter treatments in the restored riparian community had less mass remaining (40.54 ± 2.37%) than single‐species treatments (51.80 ± 4.05%), a pattern not observed in the mature forest community. Results highlight the importance of planting mixed‐species assemblages as this structure may regulate processes such as decomposition and food‐web structure, processes often not targeted in the restoration plans.  相似文献

Nitrate, ammonium, dissolved organic N, and dissolved oxygen were measured in stream water and shallow groundwater in the riparian zones of two tropical watersheds with different soils and geomorphology. At both sites, concentrations of dissolved inorganic N (DIN; NH4 +- and NO3 -N) were low in stream water (< 110 ug/L). Markedly different patterns in DIN were observed in groundwater collected at the two sites. At the first site (Icacos watershed), DIN in upslope groundwater was dominated by NO3 -N (550 ug/L) and oxygen concentrations were high (5.2 mg/L). As groundwater moved through the floodplain and to the stream, DIN shifted to dominance by NH4 +-N (200–700 ug/L) and groundwater was often anoxic. At the second site (Bisley watershed), average concentrations of total dissolved nitrogen were considerably lower (300 ug/L) than at Icacos (600 ug/L), and the dominant form of nitrogen was DON rather than inorganic N. Concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 were similar throughout the riparian zone at Bisley, but concentrations of DON declined from upslope wells to stream water. Differences in speciation and concentration of nitrogen in groundwater collected at the two sites appear to be controlled by differences in redox conditions and accessibility of dissolved N to plant roots, which are themselves the result of geomorphological differences between the two watersheds. At the Icacos site, a deep layer of coarse sand conducts subsurface water to the stream below the rooting zone of riparian vegetation and through zones of strong horizontal redox zonation. At the Bisley site, infiltration is impeded by dense clays and saturated flow passes through the variably oxidized rooting zone. At both sites, hydrologic export of nitrogen is controlled by intense biotic activity in the riparian zone. However, geomorphology appears to strongly modify the importance of specific biotic components.  相似文献

Temperature dependencies of sprouting and germination were compared for subterranean perennating organs and seeds of ten closely related species of the genusDioscorea (Dioscoreaceae), a group of monocotyledonous summer perennials which are distributed from the tropics to the subarctic. The species used wereD. nipponica Makino,D. tokoro Makino,D. japonica Thunb.,D. tenuipes Franch. et Savat.,D. septemloba Thunb.,D. quinqueloba Thunb.,D. izuensis Akahori,D. bulbifera L. f.spontanea (Makino) Makino et Nemoto,D. pentaphylla. L. andD. alata L.; they are distributed from cold northern areas to warmer southern areas approximately in this order in and around Japan. Bulbil sprouting was also studied in those forming bulbils. Subterranean organs of the tropical species sprouted faster without any prior temperature treatment, whereas those of species from the more northern areas sprouted after prechilling. Northern species required longer, periods of prechilling for sprouting. On the other hand, with seeds or bulbils, the southern species required longer periods of prior temperature treatment for dormancy breaking. This difference in the length of dormant periods between seeds or bulbils and subterranean organs among the ten species may be related to their size and position of shedding; seeds or bulbils are small and are shed on the ground surface, whereas subterranean organs are large and are located below the surface. It is important to determine in other perennials whether the above relation between dormant features of seeds or bulbils and subterranean organs are common properties or not.  相似文献

Recognition that beavers are integral components of stream ecosystems has resulted in an increase in beaver‐mediated habitat restoration projects. Beaver restoration projects are frequently implemented in degraded stream systems with little or no beaver activity. However, selection of restoration sites is often based on habitat suitability research comparing well‐established beaver colonies to unoccupied stream sections or abandoned colonies. Because beavers dramatically alter areas they occupy, assessing habitat conditions at active colonies may over‐emphasize habitat characteristics that are modified by beaver activity. During 2015–2017, we conducted beaver activity surveys on streams in the upper Missouri River watershed in southwest Montana, United States, to investigate habitat selection by beavers starting new colonies in novel areas. We compared new colony locations in unmodified stream segments to unsettled segments to evaluate conditions that promoted colonization. Newly settled stream segments had relatively low gradients (β ± SE = ?0.72 ± 0.27), narrow channels (β = ?1.31 ± 0.46), high channel complexity (β = 0.76 ± 0.42), high canopy cover of woody riparian vegetation (β = 0.56 ± 0.21), and low‐lying areas directly adjacent to the stream (β = 0.36 ± 0.24), where β denotes covariate effect sizes. Habitat selection patterns differed between our new settlement site analysis and an analysis of occupied versus unoccupied stream segments, suggesting that assessing habitat suitability based on active colonies may result in misidentification of suitable site conditions for beaver restoration. Our research provides recommendations for beaver restoration practitioners to select restoration sites that will have the highest probability of successful colony establishment.  相似文献

It is known that dormancy of the genus Dioscorea is induced by application of gibberellin (GA) A3. To understand the role of GAs in dormancy induction, endogenous GAs have been identified by Kovats retention indices and full mass spectra from capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of purified extract from dormant bulbils of Dioscorea opposita Thunb. These include GA4, GA9, GA12, GA19, GA20, GA24, GA36, and GA53; their presence suggests the occurrence of two biosynthetic pathways in D. opposita bulbils, the early 13-hydroxylation pathway and the non-13-hydroxylation pathway.  相似文献

We calculated carbon budgets for a chronosequence of harvested jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands (0‐, 5‐, 10‐, and~29‐year‐old) and a~79‐year‐old stand that originated after wildfire. We measured total ecosystem C content (TEC), above‐, and belowground net primary productivity (NPP) for each stand. All values are reported in order for the 0‐, 5‐, 10‐, 29‐, and 79‐year‐old stands, respectively, for May 1999 through April 2000. Total annual NPP (NPPT) for the stands (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) was 0.9±0.3, 1.3±0.1, 2.7±0.6, 3.5±0.3, and 1.7±0.4. We correlated periodic soil surface CO2 fluxes (RS) with soil temperature to model annual RS for the stands (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) as 4.4±0.1, 2.4±0.0, 3.3±0.1, 5.7±0.3, and 3.2±0.2. We estimated net ecosystem productivity (NEP) as NPPT minus RH (where RH was calculated using a Monte Carlo approach as coarse woody debris respiration plus 30–70% of total annual RS). Excluding C losses during wood processing, NEP (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) for the stands was estimated to be ?1.9±0.7, ?0.4±0.6, 0.4±0.9, 0.4±1.0, and ?0.2±0.7 (negative values indicate net sources to the atmosphere.) We also calculated NEP values from the changes in TEC among stands. Only the 0‐year‐old stand showed significantly different NEP between the two methods, suggesting a possible mismatch for the chronosequence. The spatial and methodological uncertainties allow us to say little for certain except that the stand becomes a source of C to the atmosphere following logging.  相似文献

以山药、日本薯蓣和黄独3种薯蓣属植物为材料,研究珠芽育苗中其茎叶生长与珠芽内的干物质、淀粉、可溶性糖、还原糖含量和淀粉酶活性变化的关系.结果表明: 3种薯蓣在茎蔓生长过程中珠芽内的干物质和淀粉含量均逐渐降低.山药和黄独的珠芽可溶性糖含量在茎蔓生长初期不断增加,随着茎蔓节数继续增加又逐渐降低,而还原糖含量在叶片展开前不断增加,叶片展开后又急剧降低;日本薯蓣珠芽的可溶性糖和还原性糖含量随着茎蔓节数增加逐渐上升,但保持相对较低水平.3种薯蓣珠芽内α-淀粉酶活性均强于β-淀粉酶,其在茎蔓和叶片生长中发挥重要作用.研究发现,薯蓣珠芽内淀粉主要在α-淀粉酶作用下转化分解为还原糖和可溶性糖,从而为茎蔓和叶片生长提供能量,且还原糖含量与叶片生长的关系更为密切.  相似文献

The seasonal change in size of Laurencia brongniartii was observed for the year 2002 at Banshobana Park, Satsuma Peninsula and Tsuchihama Beach, Amami Oshima, both in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Additionally, the vertical distribution of this species was also studied at Tsuchihama Beach (second site), where the largest populations were found. Maximum lengths were observed in October ‐ November with a size of 100 ± 6 mm at Banshobana Park and 111 ± 5 mm at Tsuchihama Beach. Line‐transects conducted at Tsuchihama Beach, were analyzed to determine the vertical distribution of L. brongniartii due to depth and the slope of the substrate. Alga was found growing in areas restricted to low levels of light.  相似文献

Water quality in Upper Sandy Creek, a headwater stream for the Cape Fear River in the North Carolina Piedmont, is impaired due to high N and P concentrations, sediment load, and coliform bacteria. The creek and floodplain ecosystem had become dysfunctional due to the effects of altered storm water delivery following urban watershed development where the impervious surface reached nearly 30% in some sub-watersheds. At Duke University, an 8-ha Stream and Wetland Assessment Management Park (SWAMP) was created in the lower portion of the watershed to assess the cumulative effect of restoring multiple portions of stream and former adjacent wetlands, with specific goals of quantifying water quality improvements. To accomplish these goals, a three-phase stream/riparian floodplain restoration (600 m), storm water reservoir/wetland complex (1.6 ha) along with a surface flow treatment wetland (0.5 ha) was ecologically designed to increase the stream wetland connection, and restore groundwater wetland hydrology. The multi-phased restoration of Sandy Creek and adjacent wetlands resulted in functioning riparian hydrology, which reduced downstream water pulses, nutrients, coliform bacteria, sediment, and stream erosion. Storm water event nutrient budgets indicated a substantial attenuation of N and P within the SWAMP project. Most notably, (NO2 + NO3)-N loads were reduced by 64% and P loads were reduced by 28%. Sediment retention in the stormwater reservoir and riparian wetlands showed accretion rates of 1.8 cm year−1 and 1.1 cm year−1, respectively. This paper presents a record of the live and carcass weights of the African giant rat Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse and the domestic rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus L. Male and female giant rats have an average killing out percentage of 51.4% (n= 10, S.D. ± 3.8) and 516% (n = 7, S.D. ± 3.47) respectively. The difference between the killing-out percentages of both sexes was not statistically significant at 5% probability level. There was also no significant difference at 5% probability level between the killing-out percentages of giant rats and domestic rabbit. Very low fat content was observed in the carcasses of wild giant rats.  相似文献

Recent attention has focused on riparian forest buffer systems for filtering sediment, nutrients, and pesticides entering from upland agricultural fields. This paper summarizes the results of a field monitoring study done in Tokachikawa watershed in Hokkaido, Japan, Cisadane, Cianten and Citamyang sub-watersheds in Indonesia and Cauvery watershed, India to quantify the impact of riparian buffer zones on changes in stream water quality. A watershed approach was used to compare land use indicators – uplands, forests, riparian forest, livestock areas – to a wide range of surface water physical and chemical properties. Stream water physical property values increased from upstream to the confluence point, influenced by the upland and livestock land use activities. The greatest reduction in impairment of water quality was observed in buffer zones located along higher order streams where the gradient is very low, leading to slow groundwater movement. The lower stream water temperature in riparian buffer zones suggests that the shading effect is most pronounced in this area of the watershed. The results demonstrate the positive impact of forest buffer zones in reducing the influence of agricultural nutrients and chemicals on surface stream waters. Design and management considerations for establishing riparian zone land use are discussed.  相似文献
