Propliopithecus ankeli is described as a new species of hominoid from the early Oligocene of Egypt. The new species occurs at a stratigraphic level 80 m below quarries yielding P. chirobates and Aegyptopithecus zeuxis. P. ankeli differs from other species of the genus in its large size, relatively robust canines, larger and proportionally broader premolars, and M1 that has as great or greater mesiodistal length than M2. Thus, P. ankeli is characterized by increased relative size and robustness of the antemolar dentition, which contrasts with the pattern observed in the Fayum's other large hominoid, A. zeuxis. P. ankeli probably represents a lineage not ancestral to other Fayum hominoids. Discovery of this new species emphasizes the diversity of anthropoid primates that had already evolved by the early Oligocene.  相似文献

The primates have the reputation of being essentially arboreal, forest-adapted animals. Yet there are many genera and species that inhabit an extremely wide array of non-forest habitats. Nevertheless, palaeoprimatologists often tend to depict fossil primate habitats as being more arboreal and more forest-like than is justified by the facts. It is worthwhile, therefore, to reconsider some current interpretations. In this paper, evidence of the Fayum Oligocene primate deposits are reviewed and discussed. The following conclusions emerge:(1) The large number of primate species indicates that the Fayum ecosystem was an optimum or near-optimum habitat for primates. (2) The lithological characteristics point to a sahélien type of climate. (3) The calcified and silicified root systems, having diameters up to 4 cm, suggest a sahélien type of shrub, bushland and/or small-tree vegetation. (4) The large fossilized logs cannot have grown on the spot and apparently represent driftwood from a more humid climatic belt in the south, as is indicated by damage resulting from fluvial transportation and by palaeobotanical data. (5) There may have been some minor patches or strips of medium-height forests and/or wood-lands in the Fayum delta, but there is no evidence of these. Thus the tall forest in which the earliest known African primates are currently supposed to have lived probably never existed. Grounds for this conclusion were presented by Unger 121 years ago, by Beadnell 75 years ago and by Kräusel 41 years ago, but sank into oblivion. The classic image of the primates as arboreal specialists seems to have interfered with seeing the facts. However, more extensive verification of the evidence by means of palaeobotanical research is still required. The fossil material to do so is readily available.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the familySphaerophoraceae (Caliciales, lichenized ascomycetes) has resulted in a new generic classification. Notes on character evolution are given. The generaSphaerophorus s. str.,Bunodophoron andLeifidium, gen. nov., are accepted.Pleurocybe andPseudosphaerophorus are considered synonyms ofBunodophoron andThysanophoron is considered synonym toSphaerophorus. The nomenclatural history of the generic nameParmeliopsis is reviewed. Its correct citation is found to beParmeliopsis (Nyl. exStizenb.)Nyl., dating from 1866, not 1869 as commonly cited, withP. placorodia (Ach.)Nyl. as holotype species. There is consequently no nomenclatural problem to the adoption ofForaminella Fricke Meyer, typified byF. ambigua (Wulfen)Fricke Meyer for theParmeliopsis species with falcate conidia. A synopsis of the nomenclature of the North American and European species of both these genera is included.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the late Eocene anthropoids Catopithecus browni and Proteopithecus sylviae are currently a matter of debate, with opinion divided as to whether these taxa are stem or crown anthropoids. The phylogenetic position of Catopithecus is of particular interest, for, unlike the highly generalized genus Proteopithecus, this taxon shares apomorphic dental and postcranial features with more derived undoubted catarrhines that appear in the same region 1-2 Ma later. If these apomorphies are homologous and Catopithecus is a stem catarrhine, the unique combination of plesiomorphic and apomorphic features preserved in this anthropoid would have important implications for our understanding of the crown anthropoid morphotype and the pattern of morphological character transformations that occurred during the early phases of stem catarrhine evolution.Well-preserved astragali referrable to Proteopithecus, Catopithecus, and the undoubted early Oligocene stem catarrhine Aegyptopithecus have provided additional morphological evidence that allows us to further evaluate competing hypotheses of interrelationships among Eocene-Oligocene Afro-Arabian anthropoids. Qualitative observations and multivariate morphometric analyses reveal that the astragalar morphology of Proteopithecus is very similar to that of early Oligocene parapithecids and living and extinct small-bodied platyrrhines, and strengthens the hypothesis that the morphological pattern shared by these taxa is primitive within crown Anthropoidea. In contrast, Catopithecus departs markedly from the predicted crown anthropoid astragalar morphotype and shares a number of apomorphic features (e.g., deep cotylar fossa, laterally projecting fibular facet, trochlear asymmetry, mediolaterally wide astragalar head) with Aegyptopithecus and Miocene-Recent catarrhines. The evidence from the astragalus complements other independent data from the dentition, humerus and femur of Catopithecus that support this taxon's stem catarrhine status, and we continue to maintain that oligopithecines are stem catarrhines that constitute the sister group of a clade containing propliopithecines and Miocene-Recent catarrhines.  相似文献

We used a five-gene data set (mtDNA: 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, cyt-b; nDNA: Cmos, Rag2) comprising approximately two-thirds of all extant testudinid species and, for the first time, including all five Testudo species to investigate the question of whether all western Palaearctic testudinids are monophyletic. Further, we examined whether the recently suggested allocation of the African Geochelone pardalis in the otherwise exclusively South African genus Psammobates and of the Malagasy G. yniphora in the monotypic genus Angonoka is justified in the face of considerable morphological evidence against such placements. Our phylogenetic analyses do not support the paraphyly and generic break-up of Testudo, as suggested by previous papers using a smaller taxon sampling and mtDNA data only. We propose a continued usage of the generic name Testudo for all five western Palaearctic tortoise species. Within Testudo, two monophyletic subclades are present, one containing T. hermanni+T. horsfieldii, and the other comprising (T. kleinmanni+T. marginata)+T. graeca. Nomenclaturally, we demonstrate that Eurotestudo Lapparent de Broin et al., 2006, which was recently erected with the type species T. hermanni, is an objective junior synonym of Chersine Merrem, 1820 and Medaestia Wussow, 1916. Recognition of a monotypic genus Angonoka for G. yniphora is unwarranted according to both our re-analysis of sequence data and morphological data. Acknowledging the strong morphological similarity between G. yniphora and G. radiata, we suggest placing both species into the genus Astrochelys. Although sequence data for only one of the three Psammobates species was available for analysis, there is currently no cause to challenge the monophyly of this genus as established on the basis of morphological evidence. Thus, we hypothesize that G. pardalis is sister to a monophyletic Psammobates. In light of the clear morphological gap between G. pardalis and Psammobates species, the recognition of a distinct genus Stigmochelys for the former seems justified.  相似文献

Intergeneric crosses were made between representatives of the genomically-defined generaElymus, Agropyron, Elytrigia, Pseudoroegneria, andThinopyrum. The genomic constitution ofElytrigia repens, the type species ofElytrigia, is shown to be SSH, a genomic combination otherwise found only inElymus. The S genome ofPseudoroegneria has almost always a dominant influence on the morphology of the taxa of which it is a component.Wang (1989) showed that the J genome inThinopyrum and the S genome have considerable homoeology, with a mean c-value of 0.35 in diploid SJ hybrids. A genetic coherence from S to SJe, Je, JeJb, and Jb can be expected, agreeing with the continuous morphologic variation pattern observed. Because of the absence of morphological discontinuities between the taxa,Pseudoroegneria (S),Elymus (SH, SY, sometimes with additional genomes),Elytrigia (SSH, SSHX), andThinopyrum (SJ, SJJ, J) are best treated as a single genus,Elymus, following the generic concept ofMelderis in Flora Europaea and Flora of Turkey. The basic genomic constituents ofElymus will then be the S and/or J genomes.Agropyron, with diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids based on the P genome is morphologically distinct from other genera inTriticeae. In a few species ofElymus andPseudoroegneria, a P genome is an additional constituent. In these cases the P genome has a negligible morphological influence. Therefore, it seems reasonable to maintainAgropyron as a separate genus.  相似文献

Based on 18S, 5.8S, and 28S rDNA sequences, the phylogenetic position of Uncinula septata within the Erysiphales has been inferred. Although appendages of the ascomata are uncinula like, i.e., unbranched with curved-coiled apices, U. septata is situated at the very base of the large Erysiphales cluster, far away from the pseudoidium clade (Erysiphe emend., including Microsphaera and Uncinula). Morphologically, U. septata differs from the species of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula (Uncinula) in having terminal, pluriseptate ascoma appendages, curved ascospores, and the absense of an anamorph. This species is a basal, tree-inhabiting powdery mildew with some additional ancestral characteristics, viz., uncinula-like appendages and 8-spored asci. The new genus Parauncinula with U. septata as the type species is proposed. Uncinula curvispora (U. septata var. curvispora) is tentatively maintained as a separate species, which is also assigned to Parauncinula.  相似文献

The pollen type ofPlanchonioideae is unique among the angiosperms in its syntricolpatism associated with the marginal ridge, marginal groove, and polar cushion; it has been studied byJ. Muller, who classified it into three types, mainly with a light microscope. In the present study, pollen grains of the six constitutent genera were studied with a scanning electron microscope, five additional pollen types were recognized. Of the eight pollen types the one with sealed polar ectoapertures and weakly developed marginal ridges, without marginal grooves and polar cushions is regarded as the most primitive. Evolutionary trends proceeded with the opening of the polar ectoapertures, the complication of the polar cushions and marginal grooves. In the most advanced form, the marginal ridges and marginal grooves coalesced to form two concentric rings, whereas the polar cushions were secondarily reduced.  相似文献

Re-thinking the classification of corticioid fungi   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Corticioid fungi are basidiomycetes with effused basidiomata, a smooth, merulioid or hydnoid hymenophore, and holobasidia. These fungi used to be classified as a single family, Corticiaceae, but molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that corticioid fungi are distributed among all major clades within Agaricomycetes. There is a relative consensus concerning the higher order classification of basidiomycetes down to order. This paper presents a phylogenetic classification for corticioid fungi at the family level. Fifty putative families were identified from published phylogenies and preliminary analyses of unpublished sequence data. A dataset with 178 terminal taxa was compiled and subjected to phylogenetic analyses using MP and Bayesian inference. From the analyses, 41 strongly supported and three unsupported clades were identified. These clades are treated as families in a Linnean hierarchical classification and each family is briefly described. Three additional families not covered by the phylogenetic analyses are also included in the classification. All accepted corticioid genera are either referred to one of the families or listed as incertae sedis.  相似文献

A study was conducted on the structure of extracellular, water-soluble polysaccharides from 5 different strains ofRhizobium viz. R. trifolii J60 andR. meliloti strains J7017, 202, 204 and 207. All these polysaccharides were found to contain glucose and galactose in the approximate molar ratio of 7:1. Methylation analysis revealed these polysaccharides to contain (1 → 3), (1 → 6), (1 → 4), (1 → 4, 1 → 6)-linked D-glucose residues, (1 → 3)-linked D-galactose and nonreducing terminal D-glucose attached to pyruvate. These polysaccharides were also found to be acylated by both acetyl and succinyl residue. This structure was found to be similar to that of succinoglycan, a succinic acid-containing water-soluble, extra-cellular polysaccharide elaborated byAlcaligenes faecalis var.myxogenes 10C3. This similarity in structure of polysaccharides from two different species ofRhizobium and also the polysaccharide produced byAlcaligenes has been discussed.  相似文献

Complete sequences for the 18S-rRNA gene of 22 bryophytes (12 completely new) were determined and used to construct phylogenetic trees. The evaluation of sequence data according to the maximum parsimony principle (PAUP 3.1.1) and the neighbor-joining method (MEGA) results in similar phylogenetic trees in which theBryopsida appear as a sister group to theJungermanniopsida, and both together as a sister group to theMarchantiopsida. Among theMarchantiopsida, theSphaerocarpales diverge early as a separate clade. TheMetzgeriales andJungermanniales are monophyletic. They belong to one clade and cannot be separated by either method of evaluation.  相似文献

The interrelationships within theHeliantheae s. lato and the closely relatedEupatorieae are analyzed and discussed. The basis to this discussion is a cladistic analysis of 141 morphological characters (172 apomorphic states) scored for 97 genera. TheHeleniae s. lato, a subgroup of theHeliantheae s. lato, are paraphyletic, and a monophyletic group corresponding largely to theHeliantheae s. str. is recognized. TheEcliptinae sensuRobinson are polyphyletic. TheCoreopsidinae form an ingroup in theHeliantheae s. str. TheTageteae (Pectidinae) and theMadieae (Madiinae) are two separate branches within the helenioid assemblage of taxa.  相似文献
