In the last decades, there has been a growing interest on evaluating the effects of biological soil crusts (hereafter, biocrusts) on vascular plants. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the influence of biocrusts on Stipa tenacissima, key species in arid and semi-arid environments of the Mediterranean Basin. In fact, we explored the impact of biocrusts removal underneath S. tenacissima on soil chemical properties and leaf mineral uptake. Indeed, we studied the effect of mixed biocrusts on the seed germination of S. tenacissima under laboratory conditions. The research showed a greater availability of soil resources correlated with enhanced leaf nutrient levels of bioessential elements in the presence of intact biocrusts compared to fragmented biocrusts underneath S. tenacissima tussocks. We suggest that this is related to the loss of soil moisture as a result of biocrusts removal. In addition, we found that mixed biocrusts favored seed germination and viability of S. tenacissima. By improving soil chemical properties and leaf nutrient uptake, biocrusts can provide enhanced growth conditions for Stipa tenacissima. These findings with the positive effect on seed germination suggest that biocrusts can be used in the restoration of S. tenacissima.  相似文献

We have studied the underlying factors responsible for the heterogeneous ecophysiological status of a semiarid Stipa tenacissima L. steppe in a subcatchment of SE Spain by assessing population composition and habitat structure of S. tenacissima stands. To do this, we measured and estimated 18 variables (11 biotic and seven abiotic) in 15 plots randomly distributed in the subcatchment, and then zoned this area by plot affinity using PCA. This analysis produced three sectors determined mainly by S. tenacissima cover and soil depth variables. The linear relationship fitted between S. tenacissima tussock biomass and tussock density in monospecific stands (both logarithmic) indicated a curve close to −1, suggesting that the system is close to the maximum constant yield state. Ecophysiological measurements (gas exchange, fluorescence and individual leaf area index) were taken in two periods with different water availability in a representative plot in each sector. The intraspecific competition (inferred from the density dependence of green biomass) and rock outcrops were the main factors influencing the ecophysiological status in the study area. While, in the wet season, intraspecific competition regulated water consumption in zones where S. tenacissima tussocks (monospecific stands) are dominant, during the dry season, stands in zones with extensive rock outcrops and stone cover (tussocks in “soil pockets”) had no access to non-rainfall water gains because of the adjacent bare soil, and so in these stands, gas exchange was lower and photoinhibition higher. This article stresses the importance of considering the connection between tussocks and bare-ground interspace in the functional and structural analysis of semiarid steppes.  相似文献

Abstract. Age-states, population structure, and seedling regeneration of the grass Chionochloa pallens were investigated in eight alpine grassland stands representing the range of canopy cover (ca. 5–75 %) and basal area (112 - 3889 m2/ha-1) in the headwaters of the Avoca catchment, Canterbury, New Zealand. In open-canopy stands (< 50 % canopy cover, < 2000 m2/ha-1 basal area) C. pallens individuals were clearly distinguishable. Rela-tionshipsbetweenbasal diameter, number of tillers, height, and % crown death suggested four putative age-states: ‘seedlings‘, ‘juvenile tussocks’, ‘mature tussocks’ and ‘senescent tussocks’. Four types of population structure were identified depending onthe proportions of seedlings and juvenile and mature tussocks. C. pallens seedlings were present in seven stands at densities ranging from 0.6 to 123.4 / m2. They were most frequent on microsites protected from frost-heave by short herbaceous vegetation or litter, but with little competition from taller vegetation. Differences in seedling densities between stands partly reflected the proximity and abundance of seed sources and degree of protection from frost-heave. C. pallens population structures appear to be influenced by the frequency and magnitude of geomorphic disturbances and browsing by introduced animals.  相似文献

Network approaches can increase our understanding of both changes in ecosystems and the role that individual species play in such changes. In ecology, networks have been applied mainly to the study of food webs and mutualistic interactions, with few studies on plant communities. This study used a network approach to examine a semi-arid plant community along a Stipa tenacissima abundance gradient at two locations in SE Spain: (1) an open shrub land where S. tenacissima is a highly competitive species, and (2) an alpha steppe where S. tenacissima forms the end stable successional community. In alpha steppe, the influence of slope was also examined. We detected that S. tenacissima influenced the network structuring process, and that network organization changed along the gradient. In open shrub land, when S. tenacissima became abundant, it dominated the community and other species disappeared. This resulted in a reduction of the number of links that S. tenacissima established. At the alpha-steppe, S. tenacissima coexists with other species, developing more links as it becomes more abundant. On gentle slope zones of alpha steppe, S. tenacissima is more competitive and becomes dominant for high abundance values, reducing its links with other species. The organization of networks varied similarly in both locations. When plant species reduce their abundance and number, links are more heterogeneously distributed in networks. This leads to a concentration of most of the links around a few species, particularly S. tenacissima, which is the most abundant in this case. We conclude that, in order to study plant communities, it is convenient to consider the properties of individual components together with the interaction between them.  相似文献

Looking for clues to explain the low rate and unpredictability of the pollination of allogamous, epiphytic orchids in the context of the success of the orchid family in general, we compared the pollination of two miniature twig epiphytes in Mexico: Notylia barkeri, a ‘weedy’, rewarding species, and Erycina crista‐galli, a rare, deceptive species. We measured the effects of the spatial organization of the flowers and various parameters of visibility and height above the ground in relation to the spatial organization of the seed capsules (which retrospectively measures the activity of the pollinators). The spatial presentation of the flowers of E. crista‐galli explained only 5% of the distribution of the seed capsules. For N. barkeri, with compound flowers, the spatial presentation, considering individual flowers or inflorescences, explained 12% and 45% of the distribution of the seed capsules, respectively, and all other interactions between the variables were insignificant. Both the deceptive and reward strategies resulted in the production of large numbers of seeds despite a low pollination percentage (1–5%). Notylia barkeri produced 11.8 (2005–6) and 53.7 (2007–8) times more seeds in total than E. crista‐galli. Furthermore, unlike E. crista‐galli, N. barkeri responded to loss of individuals after high winds with an increased production of flowers per plant. We suggest that orchids have evolved to specialize in chance, and instead of maximizing pollinator attraction, they maximize the seed production resulting from every casual encounter. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 165 , 251–266.  相似文献

Understanding the effect of disturbance and interspecific interactions on population dynamics and availability of suitable habitats for colonization and growth is critical for conservation and management of endangered species. Hypericum cumulicola is a narrowly endemic, small perennial herb virtually restricted to open areas of well-drained white sand in Florida rosemary scrub, a naturally patchy community that burns about every 20–80 years. Over 1 year (September 1994 to September 1995) we evaluated variation in survival, growth and fecundity among 1214 individuals in 14 rosemary scrub patches of different sizes (0.09–1.85 ha) and fire histories (2, 8–10, and >20 years since the last fire). Fire kills aboveground individuals of H. cumulicola, but new individuals were present a year after fire. Recruitment decreased in patches more than a decade post-fire. Survival, annual height growth rate, and fecundity (number of flowers and fruits) were higher in recently burned patches. Scrub patch size did not affect these demographic variables. Survival was positively associated with the presence of conspecifics and negatively related to proximity to the dominant shrub Florida rosemary (Ceratiola ericoides), prior reproductive output, and ground lichen cover. Since H. cumulicola and other herbaceous species in the rosemary scrub depend on sporadic fires to decrease interference of shrubs and ground lichens, its persistence may be threatened by fire suppression. Abstract

A reappraisal of the conservation status of the New Zealand frog fauna is presented using the 2008 version of the New Zealand Threat Classification System. Of New Zealand's four extant endemic species, three are judged to be ‘Threatened’ (Leiopelma hamiltoni being ‘Nationally Critical’, and L. pakeka and L. archeyi being ‘Nationally Vulnerable’) and one ‘At Risk’ (L. hochstetteri ‘Declining’). Three Leiopelma species are listed as extinct—they are known from bone deposits in caves throughout the country until some time in the last 1000 years. Three introduced and naturalised Litoria species are abundant in New Zealand although two (L. aurea and L. raniformis) are threatened in their country of origin (Australia). An additional unidentified frog taxon from northern Great Barrier Island is listed as ‘Data Deficient’.  相似文献

Questions : How do species diversity, frequency and composition in tussocks differ from those in similar sized plots outside tussocks? Does the extent of the differences depend on community types or environmental conditions? Location : A sub‐alpine grassland in the Swiss National Park. Methods : In each of the two communities (short grass and tall graminoid) differing in species composition, grazing intensity and soil nutrient availability, relevés were made in 40 pairs of small circular plots, with one plot located inside a randomly selected Carex sempervirens tussock and the other outside. Results : We found 92 vascular species, of which 46 had a frequency higher than 5%. Species richness (S), pooled cover, Shannon's diversity (H) and cumulative species number (CS) were higher outside than inside the C. sempervirens tussocks, but evenness (J) was lower. S, H and CS differed more in the tall graminoid community than in the short grass community. However, dissimilarity between the paired relevés inside and outside tussocks did not differ between the two communities. Of the 46 most frequent species, 12 were statistically more and only one less frequent outside than inside the tussocks. Vegetation inside and outside tussocks could be clearly distinguished in the ordination space. Conclusion : Vegetation inside C. sempervirens tussocks is different from that in the surrounding area and represents an impoverished but homogenized version of the surrounding vegetation. Although tussocks of C. sempervirens were systematically avoided by grazers, there is little evidence that tussocks facilitate the species growing inside them.  相似文献

Background and aims

In Mediterranean steppes, Stipa tenacissima tussocks facilitate the establishment of vascular plants. We hypothesized that this effect may partially reflect the indirect interaction between Stipa tenacissima, biological soil crusts (BSC), and seeds.

Methods

We explored the relationship between BSC composition and soil surface conditions (surface roughness and hydrophobicity by using the water drop penetration time test), and seed germination and seedling rooting in a S. tenacissima steppe in southeastern Spain. We explored the causal factors of seed germination at two spatial scales and used SADIE index to represents the soil surface heterogeneity.

Results

Microsites strongly differed in BSC composition and soil surface conditions. Germination of two key species, Pistacia lentiscus and Brachypodium retusum, was not affected by BSC type. In contrast, rooting was lower on soil from open areas covered by BSC than on soil from open areas dominated by bare soil and soil collected under the tussocks. The effect was similar in both species. Lichens were probably responsible for the decrease in rooting.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that lichen cover and the cover of bare soil and mosses may hamper and facilitate rooting, respectively. By affecting seedling rooting, BSC may contribute to the facilitative effect of Stipa tenacissima.  相似文献

A new species Microchirita ruthiae Rafidah (Gesneriaceae) from limestone in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia, is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by having a branched stem, inflorescences with 1–4 flowers, the flowers with a white corolla (rarely faintly tinged with pale purple), glistening pale brown glandular hairs inside the throat, free anthers, and hairy capsules. Its conservation status following IUCN categories and criteria is assessed as ‘Endangered’ (EN).  相似文献

We studied floral biology and the role of flower visitors in fruit set of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.). Muskmelon produced Staminate (hereafter ‘S’) and Hermaphrodite (hereafter ‘H’) flowers with a ratio of 18:1. Flowers opened around 40 days after planting and flowering continued for another 40 days. Longevity of both types of flowers was one day. Anthesis in S flowers was earlier (0545–0700 h) than that of H flowers (0700–0830 h). Anther dehiscence occurred 10–15 min after anthesis in both the flowers. The number of pollen grains in H flowers was significantly lower (2715 ± 143) than S flowers (4968 ± 398). Pollen viability and stigma receptivity was maximum between 1600 and 1800 h. The pollen tube of pollen grains from H flowers grew very slowly and never reached the ovary. There were two peaks in nectar production in a day (1000–1200 h and 1400–1800 h). Sixteen species of insects belonging to Hymenoptera (81.25%), Diptera (12.50%) and Lepidoptera (6.5%) visited muskmelon flowers. Major visitors were honeybees, Apis cerana F. and A. florea F. and both were efficient pollinators. Diversity and abundance of flower visitors positively correlated with floral abundance. In pollination exclusion experiments, no fruit set was observed in bagged, self-pollinated and the flowers artificially crossed only with other H pollen. But, those flowers hand pollinated with pollen from S flowers and ones that were allowed for open pollination set maximum fruits. The crop needs a minimum of 8–10 bee visits per flower to achieve the same level of pollination efficiency provided with natural/unrestrained visits.  相似文献

Lake Tana has a remarkable fish diversity, including 17 endemic Labeobarbus species, of which nine spawn in the inflowing rivers. Three of the migratory species are threatened, namely the endangered Labeobarbus macrophtalmus and the vulnerable L. acutirostris and L. platydorsus. In July–November 2016 during the wet season netting upstream and downstream of large weirs in two rivers and in two undammed rivers showed that weirs had a severe negative effect on migratory Labeobarbus, including the three threatened species. Of eight Labeobarbus species caught below the Gelda River weir, only L. intermedius was recorded above the weir, and in the Shini River, five Labeobarbus species were caught below the weir, but none above it. Labeobarbus diversity below the Gelda River weir (H’?=?1.4) was significantly different to that above the weir (H’?=?0), whereas in the two rivers without any weirs, Labeobarbus diversity downstream (H’?=?1.39 and 1.55) was not significantly different from that upstream (H’?=?1.52 and 1.40). Therefore, specific mitigation measures, such as fishways, need to be designed from the outset of proposed weir and instream dam construction.  相似文献

Described and illustrated is Warneckea cordiformis R. D. Stone, an evidently localized endemic of coastal dry forest in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Province. In ‘Flora Zambesiaca’ the new species would key to W. sansibarica (Taub.) Jacq.‐Fél., from which it is readily distinguished by the much smaller, ovate to cordiform leaves and white, short‐pedicellate flowers. Because of its evidently very limited occurrence as well as on‐going anthropogenic threats, Warneckea cordiformis is here assessed as ‘Critically Endangered’ (CR) B1a,b(iii) according to IUCN criteria. Geckos in the genus Hoplodactylus visit flowers to feed on nectar. I examined the patterns of flower visitation exhibited by two gecko species (H. maculatus and H. duvauceli) having access to two plant species: pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa: Myrtaceae) and flax (Phormium tenax: Agavaceae). Individual geckos were not observed to visit both plant species; individuals visiting flax tended to revisit the same plant. Geckos visiting pohutukawa were larger than those visiting flax and exhibited an early night peak in plant visitation, while lizards on flax displayed a more even pattern of activity throughout the night. On flax, geckos were more likely to be found on plants with a greater number of male flowers. Male flax flowers were of greater diameter than female flowers and produced nectar at higher rates and with greater concentrations of sugars. Experimental manipulation of pohutukawa nectar volumes suggested that the distribution of geckos is influenced by the pattern of nectar availability.  相似文献

Aims Several bird‐pollinated or ornithophilous flowers are present on the Macaronesian archipelagos, the Canary Islands and Madeira, but absent from nearby NW Africa and Europe. In Macaronesia, no specialist nectar‐feeding birds are found, but several generalist passerine bird species visit flowers for nectar. Two hypotheses attempt to explain the origin and evolution of ornithophily in the Macaronesian flora. According to ‘the island de novo hypothesis’, bird‐flowers evolved from mainland insect‐pollinated ancestors after island colonization. Alternatively, ancestors of the ornithophilous Macaronesian plant species evolved bird‐flowers before reaching the islands (‘the relict hypothesis’). In this study we first compile information of Macaronesian bird–flower interactions from the literature and our own field observations. Secondly, we discuss the two hypotheses of origin of ornithophily in the light of evidence from recent molecular plant phylogenies, palaeontology, historical biogeography of the African avifauna and flora, and present‐day ecological patterns. Location Madeira and Canary Islands. Results At least eleven endemic Macaronesian plant species from six genera have typical ornithophilous floral traits. These genera are: Canarina and Musschia (Campanulaceae), Isoplexis (Scrophulariaceae), Echium (Boraginaceae), Lotus (Fabaceae) and Lavatera (Malvaceae). These lineages have clear affinities to the Mediterranean region, except for Canarina whose closest relatives grow in East African mountains. Six generalist passerine bird species of Sylvia, Phylloscopus (Sylviidae), Serinus (Fringillidae) and Parus (Paridae) visit this flora for nectar. Main conclusion We suggest that the origin and evolution of ornithophilous traits in these plant species took place mostly in mainland areas prior to island colonization. In Canarina and Lavatera, it is well supported that ornithophily is a relict condition, which originated in mainland areas possibly in association with specialist nectar‐feeding birds. For the remaining plant species except Echium wildpretii bird floral traits probably also are a relict condition. These species may be derived from ancestors, which were visited by specialist nectar‐feeding birds during geological periods when the Mediterranean and the Ethiopian vegetation were intermingled in mainland Africa. Probably, these mainland ancestors went extinct due to severe climatic fluctuations, while their Macaronesian descendants survived in ‘refuge’ on the islands. Finally, the island de novo hypothesis may explain the evolution of a mixed bird/insect‐pollination system in the neo‐endemic red‐flowered Echium wildpretii.  相似文献

In the present paper we studied the life history traits related to seed germination of Stipa tenacissima, a key species in semiarid environments of western Mediterranean areas. S. tenacissima is a perennial tussock grass, which has traditionally been considered to expand mainly by vegetative propagation with little or no sexual reproduction. We analysed seed longevity as well as the type of seed dormancy and the role of the seed covers from seeds collected from different populations in SE Spain. We also studied the variation in seed germinability among populations, individuals, and years and the ability of seeds of S. tenacissima to form soil seed banks. There was significant variation in seed germination among individuals, populations and years. Lemma and palea were the main factor controlling these differences since their removal promoted higher and faster germination and eliminated the differences in germination parameters among populations. However, the control of dormancy by lemma and palea was independent of their weight, suggesting that their chemical nature plays a more important role than does size in controlling seed germination. Mechanical scarification treatments (via abrasion with sand) did not affect seed germination. The decay in seed germinability two years after seed collection and the low density of viable seeds in soils one year after seed dispersal indicated that S. tenacissima forms transient soil seed banks.  相似文献

Two new species of Hedysarum, H. alii Haidar Ali & Qaiser sp. nov. and H. shahjinalense Haidar Ali & Qaiser sp. nov. are described from Chitral in Pakistan. As far as known, both new species are endemic to Chitral and are categorized as ‘Critically Endangered’ (CR). In addition, three other species of Hedysarum are recorded from Pakistan for the first time, viz. H. volkii Rech. f., H. brahuicum Boiss. and H. sericeum M. Bieb. These are also ‘Critically Endangered’ (CR) at a national level. A key to all 12 species of Hedysarum occurring in Pakistan is provided.  相似文献

The new species Spiradiclis jingxiensis R. J. Wang is described here. It is similar to S. danxiashanensis with respect to its prostrate habit, small leaves, and terminal inflorescence with 1–3 salverform flowers, but is readily distinguished by pinkish flowers, and included stamens and stigmas in long‐ and short‐styled flowers. The conservation status of the new species was preliminarily assessed as ‘EN’ according to IUCN categories and criteria.  相似文献

Psychotria elephantina Lachenaud & Cheek is described as a new species. It is placed in P. sect. Involucratae (Petit) Verdc., endemic to the South West Region of Cameroon and is assessed as ‘Endangered’ (EN) using the IUCN criteria. The species is distinctive in P. sect. Involucratae due to its long petioles (6.5–12.0 cm), involucres of two pairs of large free bracts and green corollas with included stamens in both longistylous and brevistylous flowers.  相似文献
