Aims: To investigate the effectiveness of infrared (IR) radiation heating in disinfecting air filters loaded with bioaerosols. Methods and Results: An irradiation device was constructed considering the unique characteristics of IR and the physical dimensions and radiative properties of air filters. Filters loaded with test bioaerosols were irradiated with the device and flash heated to an ultra‐high temperature (UHT). A maximum of 3·77‐, 4·38‐ and 5·32‐log inactivation of B. subtilis spores, E. coli, and MS2 virus respectively was achieved within 5 s of irradiation. Inactivation efficiency could be increased by using a higher IR power. Microscopic analysis showed no visible damage from the heat treatment that would affect filtration efficiency. Conclusions: Because the disinfection was a dry heat process, a temperature greater than 200°C was found necessary to successfully inactivate the test micro‐organisms. The results demonstrate that IR is able to quickly disinfect filters given sufficient incident power. Compared to existing filter disinfection technologies, it offers a faster and more effective solution. Significance and Impact of the Study: It has been shown that IR heating is a feasible option for filter disinfection; possibly reducing fomite transmission of collected micro‐organisms and preventing bioaerosol reaerosolization.  相似文献

Aims: The major objective of the study was to evaluate the enhanced germicidal effects of low‐frequency pulsed ultraviolet A (UVA)‐light‐emitting diode (LED) on biofilms. Methods and Results: The germicidal effects of UVA‐LED irradiation (365 nm, 0·28 mW cm?2, in pulsed or continuous mode) on Candida albicans or Escherichia coli biofilms were evaluated by determining colony‐forming units. The morphological change of microbial cells in biofilms was observed using scanning electron microscopy. After 5‐min irradiation, over 90% of viable micro‐organisms in biofilms had been killed, and pulsed irradiation (1–1000 Hz) had significantly greater germicidal ability than continuous irradiation. Pulsed irradiation (100 Hz, 60 min) almost completely killed micro‐organisms in biofilm (>99·9%), and 20‐min irradiation greatly damaged both microbial species. Interestingly, few hyphae were found in irradiated Candida biofilms. Moreover, mannitol treatment, a scavenger of hydroxyl radicals (OH?), significantly protected viable micro‐organisms in biofilms from UVA‐LED irradiation. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that pulsed UVA‐LED irradiation has a strong germicidal effect (maximum at 100 Hz, over 5‐min irradiation) and causes the disappearance of hyphal forms of Candida. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study can assist in developing a low‐frequency pulsed UVA‐LED system to be applied to pathogenic biofilms for disinfection.  相似文献

Aim: During aseptic manufacturing and specifically during the transfer of items into an isolator, disinfection of surfaces is essential for reducing the risk of final product contamination. Surface disinfection can be carried out by a variety of methods, however the most accepted current practice is a combination of spraying with 70% alcohol and wiping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two wipe systems by determining their ability to remove, kill and transfer bacterial contaminants from standardized surfaces. Methods and Results: The protocol used to achieve these objectives was based on a newly published method specifically designed to test wipes. Alcohol impregnated wipes performed better at reducing microbial bioburden than the alcohol spray/dry wipe applications. Impregnated wipes drastically reduced (1–2 log10 reduction) a small bioburden (approx. 2 log10) of spores of Bacillus subtilis and methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus from the surface, but failed to remove (<0·2 log10 reduction) Staphylococcus epidermidis. The alcohol spray/dry wipes did not manage to remove (<0·2 log10 reduction) spore or bacterial bioburden from surfaces and was able to transfer some viable micro‐organisms to other surfaces. Both wipe types showed poor antimicrobial efficacy (<1 log10 reduction) against the test bacteria and spores. Conclusions: As far as the authors are aware this is the first time that such a practical study has been reported and our results suggest that the best wipes for surface disinfection in aseptic units are the alcohol (IPA) impregnated wipes when compared with the dry wipes sprayed with alcohol. Significance and Impact of the Study: The impregnated wipes performed better than the dry wipes sprayed with alcohol and should be used for surface disinfection in aseptic units.  相似文献

Aims

To assess, in a cleaned and disinfected barn environment, the efficacy of an animal disinfection strategy to reduce the livestock‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA‐MRSA) prevalence in sows, their offspring and the barn environment.

Methods and Results

On each farm, six sow rounds were sampled; sows were divided into either a test or control group. Per round, 20 sows and 40 of their piglets were sampled at different time points together with the barn environment. The disinfection strategy of the test groups consisted of washing the sows with a shampoo followed by disinfection of the skin with a solution containing chlorhexidine digluconate and isopropanol. On the first day of disinfection and 6 days after stopping the disinfection, a significant decrease (P < 0·01) of on average 68 and 66% in sow MRSA prevalence was observed on both farms, whereas no decrease was seen in the control groups. Just before weaning, 21–28 days after the end of the disinfection strategy, the difference in MRSA prevalence between both groups was reduced to 4% and no longer significant (P = 0·20). The MRSA prevalence of the piglets in the test groups was significantly lower (26%; P < 0·01) 6 days after the end of disinfection. Just before weaning, this difference was reduced to 5% but still significant (P < 0·01). In the swine nursery unit, no significant difference (P = 0·99) was seen between both groups. Based on semi‐quantitative counts, a relationship (r2 > 0·6; P < 0·01) was seen between MRSA contamination in the barn environment and the MRSA prevalence in pigs.

Conclusion

Results show that the tested disinfection strategy reduces temporarily the sow and piglet MRSA status, but does not result in a final reduction in MRSA at weaning or in the nursery unit.

Aims: Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize a protective medium for enhancing the viability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus E/N cells during lyophilization. Methods and Results: Spirulina, sucrose and lactulose were selected, on the basis of a Plackett‐Burman factorial design, as important protectants having the following protective effects on cell viability: 102·025, 36·885 and ?34·42, respectively. A full‐factorial central composite design was applied to determine optimal levels of three used agents. Conclusion: The optimal protective medium composition was determined to be: Spirulina 1·304% (w/v), lactulose 5·48% (w/v), and sucrose 13·04% (w/v) (Polish Patent P‐393189). The predictive value of cell viability in this medium was 89·619%, and experimental viability obtained during freeze‐drying was 87·5%. Significance and Impact of the Study: In this study, Spirulina was used for the first time as the protective agent in freeze‐drying medium, significantly increasing lactobacilli viability and giving synbiotic character of the final product.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and proportions of opportunistic pathogens harboured on orthodontic retainers. Methods and Results: First, Staphylococcus spp. and Candida spp. were isolated from the retainer’s inner surface and from other mucosal surfaces of the subject’s mouth by routine bacterial culture. The prevalence and proportions of these micro‐organisms on retainers was compared in different areas of the mouth within a group of retainer wearers, and mucosal carriage was compared to a group of nonretainer wearers. Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from 50% of the retainers and comprised on average 8·4% of the viable microbiota. Candida spp. comprised 0·13% of the viable microbiota and were recovered from 66·7% of the retainers. Neither genus was isolated from nonretainer wearers. Second, the two most commonly worn retainers manufactured from different materials were sampled; again Staphylococcus spp. and Candida spp. were recovered; however, no statistical differences were observed between the devices. Conclusions: Opportunistic, nonoral, pathogenic micro‐organisms were recovered from orthodontic retainers. Significance and Impact of the Study: It is possible that an orthodontic retainer could be a reservoir for opportunistic pathogens and act as a source of cross‐, self‐ and re‐infection.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between the hygienic practice of slaughterhouse workers and the microbiological contamination level of carcasses. In 5 Finnish slaughterhouses the workers’ hygienic practice was observed and the carcasses were sampled by the swabbing method. The overall means (log10 cfu cm−2) of the aerobic plate count in pork and beef carcasses were 3.23 and 2.65, respectively. Hygienic practice was found to be associated with the carcass contamination level, especially the disinfection frequency. In those slaughterhouses, where the disinfection frequency was low, the contamination level of carcasses was high. Designing slaughtering lines so as to make hygienic working possible is evidently very important. However, the enforcement of hygienic practice, such as the regular disinfection of working tools, is also important in reducing the microbiological contamination of carcasses.  相似文献

Aims: To develop a new instrument of great versatility for recovering micro‐organisms from all types of food samples and to compare the effects with existing sample preparation methods. Methods and Results: To detach micro‐organisms from large‐size unbroken food samples such as apples, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes without preprocessing, the Spindle apparatus was newly developed. The Spindle was used to effectively detach micro‐organisms from large‐size samples. In a comparative study involving 51 food samples, treatment with the Spindle and Stomacher showed that recovery of total aerobic micro‐organisms (naturally occurring mesophilic microflora) and foodborne pathogens (from samples inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes) for both methods was highly correlated (R2 = 0·98). Furthermore, diluents treated by the Spindle contained much less food debris than those treated by stomaching. Conclusions: These results indicate that Spindle is a novel, effective alternative method for detaching micro‐organisms from food samples including four kinds of large‐size samples without the need for preprocessing. Significance and Impact of Study: The Spindle might be used to widely detaching micro‐organisms from all types of food samples for microbiological assay.  相似文献

Aims: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis of machinists associated with metalworking fluids (MWF) was recently linked to Mycobacterium immunogenum. In addition to Mycobacterium, impacts of continuous and massive contact to other micro‐organisms, such as Pseudomonas, were little studied. This report intended to quantify and characterize the microbial load of 44 in‐use MWF. Methods and Results: The main biodiversity of MWF was assessed using cultural methods, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Total bacteria concentrations ranged from undetectable to 109 16S rRNA gene copies per millilitre. Concentrations obtained by qPCR were up to five orders of magnitude higher than by culture, suggesting that MWF contamination is generally underestimated. Two samples showed high concentrations of Myco. immunogenum (1·55 × 107 and 3·49 × 105 16S rRNA gene copies per millilitre). The overall biodiversity was low, as observed by culture and DGGE, and was comparable to data found in the literature. Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes was by far the main bacteria found in MWF samples (33 out of 44), followed by Ochrobactrum anthropi (32 out of 44). There was no significant relationship between the biodiversity profiles and the kind of MWF or equipment used, making it difficult to predict which micro‐organisms will colonize each particular MWF. Conclusions: Very high concentrations of bacteria were found in most MWF studied and limited biodiversities were observed. Many species of micro‐organisms were retrieved from MWF samples, but they were mostly colonized by Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes and Ochrobactrum anthropi. Significance and Impact of the Study: The major micro‐organisms observed or recovered in this study from in‐use MWF were present in very high concentrations, and thus further studies are needed to confirm their role in workers’ respiratory disorders or health‐related problems.  相似文献

Aim: To develop an inactivation kinetic model to describe ultraviolet (UV) dose‐response behaviour for micro‐organisms that exhibit tailing using two commonly referenced causes for tailing: physical shielding of micro‐organisms and phenotypic persistence. Methods and Results: Dose‐response data for Escherichia coli, Mycobacterium terrae and Bacillus subtilis spores exposed to UV radiation were fit to the phenotypic persistence and external shielding (PPES) model. The fraction of persistent micro‐organisms in the original population (Npersistent/Ntotal) that exhibited reduced sensitivity to UV radiation was estimated by the PPES model as approx. 10?7, 10?5 and 10?4 for E. coli, B. subtilis spores and Myco. terrae, respectively. Particle shielding effects were evaluated for Myco. terrae and resulted in additional reduction in UV sensitivity. Conclusions: Tailing occurred in laboratory experiments even when clumping and shielding were eliminated as major factors in UV resistance, suggesting that phenotypic persistence in addition to shielding may be important to consider when evaluating dose‐response curves for disinfection applications. Significance and Impact of the Study: The PPES model provides a mechanistically plausible tool for estimating the dose–response behaviour for micro‐organisms that exhibit tailing in dispersed and aggregated settings. Accurate dose‐response behaviour (including the tailing region) is critical to the analysis and validation of all UV disinfection systems.  相似文献

Aims: Poor butanol tolerance of solventogenic stains directly limits their butanol production during industrial‐scale fermentation process. This study was performed to search for micro‐organisms possessing elevated tolerance to butanol. Methods and Results: Two strains, which displayed higher butanol tolerance compared to commonly used solventogenic Clostridium acetobutylicum, were isolated by evolution and screening strategies. Both strains were identified as lactic acid bacteria (LAB). On this basis, a LAB culture collection was tested for butanol tolerance, and 60% of the strains could grow at a butanol concentration of 2·5% (v/v). In addition, an isolated strain with superior butanol tolerance was transformed using a certain plasmid. Conclusions: The results indicate that many strains of LAB possessed inherent tolerance of butanol. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study suggests that LAB strains may be capable of producing butanol to elevated levels following suitable genetic manipulation.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate physicochemical characteristics and especially genotypic diversity of the main culturable micro‐organisms involved in fermentation of sap from Borassus akeassii, a newly identified palm tree from West Africa.

Methods and Results

Physicochemical characterization was performed using conventional methods. Identification of micro‐organisms included phenotyping and sequencing of: 26S rRNA gene for yeasts, 16S rRNA and gyrB genes for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and acetic acid bacteria (AAB). Interspecies and intraspecies genotypic diversities of the micro‐organisms were screened respectively by amplification of the ITS1‐5.8S rDNA‐ITS2/16S‐23S rDNA ITS regions and repetitive sequence‐based PCR (rep‐PCR). The physicochemical characteristics of samples were: pH: 3·48–4·12, titratable acidity: 1·67–3·50 mg KOH g?1, acetic acid: 0·16–0·37%, alcohol content: 0·30–2·73%, sugars (degrees Brix): 2·70–8·50. Yeast included mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae and species of the genera Arthroascus, Issatchenkia, Candida, Trichosporon, Hanseniaspora, Kodamaea, Schizosaccharomyces, Trigonopsis and Galactomyces. Lactobacillus plantarum was the predominant LAB species. Three other species of Lactobacillus were also identified as well as isolates of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Fructobacillus durionis and Streptococcus mitis. Acetic acid bacteria included nine species of the genus Acetobacter with Acetobacter indonesiensis as predominant species. In addition, isolates of Gluconobacter oxydans and Gluconacetobacter saccharivorans were also identified. Intraspecies diversity was observed for some species of micro‐organisms including four genotypes for Acet. indonesiensis, three for Candida tropicalis and Lactobacillus fermentum and two each for S. cerevisiae, Trichosporon asahii, Candida pararugosa and Acetobacter tropicalis.

Conclusion

fermentation of palm sap from B. akeassii involved multi‐yeast‐LAB‐AAB cultures at genus, species and intraspecies level.

Significance and Impact of the Study

First study describing microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of palm wine from B. akeassii. Genotypic diversity of palm wine LAB and AAB not reported before is demonstrated and this constitutes valuable information for better understanding of the fermentation which can be used to improve the product quality and develop added value by‐products.  相似文献

The antimicrobial activity of five samples of Taxandria fragrans essential oil was evaluated against a range of Gram‐positive (n= 26) and Gram‐negative bacteria (n= 39) and yeasts (n= 10). The majority of organisms were inhibited and/or killed at concentrations ranging from 0.06–4.0% v/v. Geometric means of MIC were lowest for oil Z (0.77% v/v), followed by oils X (0.86%), C (1.12%), A (1.23%) and B (1.24%). Despite differences in susceptibility data between oils, oils A and X did not differ when tested at 2% v/v in a time kill assay against Staphylococcus aureus. Cytotoxicity assays using peripheral blood mononuclear cells demonstrated that T. fragrans oil was cytotoxic at 0.004% v/v but not at 0.002%. Exposure to one or more of the oils at concentrations of ≤0.002% v/v resulted in a dose responsive reduction in the production of proinflammatory cytokines IL‐6 and TNF‐α, regulatory cytokine IL‐10, Th1 cytokine IFN‐γ and Th2 cytokines IL‐5 and IL‐13 by PHA stimulated mononuclear cells. Oil B inhibited the production of all cytokines except IL‐10, oil X inhibited TNF‐α, IL‐6 and IL‐10, oil A inhibited TNF‐α and IL‐6, oil C inhibited IL‐5 and IL‐6 and oil Z inhibited IL‐13 only. IL‐6 production was significantly inhibited by the most oils (A, B, C and X), followed by TNF‐α (oils A, B and X). In conclusion, T. fragrans oil showed both antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory activity in vitro, however, the clinical relevance of this remains to be determined.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyse the micro‐organisms present in the conjunctival secretion in anophthalmic cavities of wearers of ocular prostheses, as well as on the prostheses used by them, correlating them with the microbiota of the contralateral eye. Nine patients with maxillofacial abnormalities, wearers of an acrylic resin ocular prosthesis participated in the study. Collections of conjunctival secretions and biofilm were performed on the prosthesis, anophthalmic cavity and contralateral eye for the mycological and bacterial analyses. The data were submitted to statistical analysis, performing a Kendall correlation test to identify the correlation between the collection site and the identified micro‐organism (< 0·05). It was verified that the most prevalent micro‐organisms were the Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, independent of the collection site, and that negative cultures for fungi were encountered in 85·2% of collections, independent of the region. It was not possible to establish a correlation among the types of micro‐organisms and the collection sites.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Some evidence suggests that the surface roughness of ocular prostheses can influence interactions with micro‐organisms, with greater prejudicial consequences, such as the establishment of biofilms, which could lead to infections. Thus, it becomes extremely important to identify the micro‐organisms present on the acrylic surfaces of ocular prostheses, as well as the microbiota of the anophthalmic cavity and contralateral eye of wearers of the same, so that subsequent control measures promote the homeostatic maintenance of the ocular region.  相似文献

Aims: The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) contamination of retail meat and to determine the level of contamination. Methods and Results: Pork (pork chops and ground pork), ground beef and chicken (legs, wings and thighs) were purchased at retail outlets in four Canadian provinces and tested for the presence of methicillin‐resistant Staph. aureus using qualitative and quantitative methods. MRSA was isolated from 9·6% of pork, 5·6% of beef and 1·2% of chicken samples (P = 0·0002). Low levels of MRSA were typically present, with 37% below the detection threshold for quantification and <100 CFU g?1 present in most quantifiable samples. All isolates were classified as Canadian epidemic MRSA‐2 (CMRSA‐2) by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), with two different PFGE subtypes, and were spa type 24/t242. Conclusions: MRSA contamination of retail meat is not uncommon. While CMRSA‐2, a human epidemic clone, has been found in pigs in Canada, the lack of isolation of livestock‐associated ST398 was surprising. Significance and Impact of the Study: The relevance of MRSA contamination of meat is unclear but investigation is required because of the potential for exposure from food handling. Sources of contamination require investigation because these results suggest that human or animal sources could be involved.  相似文献

Aims: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of different disinfection methods in eliminating Salmonella contamination from turkey houses. Methods and Results: Fifty depopulated turkey houses which had all housed Salmonella‐positive flocks were visited after cleaning and disinfection. A minimum of 45 swab samples from different surfaces were taken per house and analysed for the presence of Salmonella. The sampled surfaces included intact floor surfaces, floor cracks, walls, feeders, drinkers, anteroom, nestboxes and miscellaneous items. Houses were grouped according to the disinfectant which had been used and the efficacy of the different groups of disinfectants was compared. Sixty‐eight % of houses tested positive for Salmonella after C&D. Out of 4440 samples, 207 tested positive for Salmonella, giving an overall sample prevalence of 4·7%. There was no significant difference in the level of residual contamination between breeding, rearing and finishing houses. Products containing a mixture of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) performed significantly better than products containing hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid. Cleaning and disinfection was least effective in nestboxes and anterooms. Conclusions: Thorough cleaning and the choice of a suitable disinfectant are crucial if Salmonella contamination of turkey houses is to be eliminated. Significance and impact of the study: This study shows that disinfectants containing a mixture of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and QAC perform significantly better under field conditions than oxidising products and should therefore be the first choice for disinfection of turkey premises where Salmonella is present.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of 11 samples of stingless bee honey compared to medicinal, table and artificial honeys. Methods and Results: Activity was assessed by agar diffusion, agar dilution, broth microdilution and time‐kill viability assays. By agar dilution, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges were 4% to >10% (w/v) for Gram‐positive bacteria, 6% to >16% (w/v) for Gram‐negative bacteria and 6% to >10% (w/v) for Candida spp. By broth microdilution, all organisms with the exception of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata were inhibited at ≤32% (w/v). Geometric MIC (w/v) means for stingless bee honeys ranged from 7·1% to 16·0% and were 11·7% for medicinal honey and 26·5% for table honey. Treatment of organisms with 20% (w/v) stingless bee honey for 60 min resulted in decreases of 1–3 log for Staphylococcus aureus, >3 log for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and <1 log for C. albicans. Similar treatment with each control honey resulted in decreases of <1 log for all organisms. Conclusions: Stingless bee honey has broad‐spectrum antibacterial activity although activity against Candida was limited. Stingless bee honey samples varied in activity and the basis for this remains to be determined. Significance and Impact of the Study: Stingless bee honey had similar activity to medicinal honey and may therefore have a role as a medicinal agent.  相似文献

Aims: A major problem in industrial fermentation of organic acids with micro‐organisms is to ensure a suitable pH in the culture broth. To circumvent this problem, we investigated the effect of citrate, which is a widely used auxiliary energy co‐substrate, on cell growth, organic acid production and pH homeostasis among extracellular environment, cytoplasm and vacuole, in the pyruvic acid production by Candida glabrata CCTCC M202019 under different pH conditions. Methods and Results: Analysis of intracellular ATP regeneration, cytoplasmic and vacuolar pH values under different culture conditions points towards a relief of stress when C. glabrata is exposed to lower pH, if citrate is added. When 50 mmol l?1 citrate was added to the culture medium, the intracellular ATP concentrations increased by 20·5% (pH 5·5), 20·4% (pH 5·0) and 39·3% (pH 4·5), and higher pH gradients among the culture broth, cell cytoplasm and vacuoles resulted. As a consequence, the cell growth and pyruvic acid production of C. glabrata CCTCC M202019 were significantly improved under pH 5·0 and 4·5. Conclusions: The acid tolerance of yeast can be improved by enhancing the ATP supply, which helps to maintain higher pH gradients in the system. Significance and Impact of the Study: The results presented here expand our understanding of the physiological characteristics in eukaryotic micro‐organisms under low pH conditions and provide a potential route for the further improvement of organic acids production process by process optimization or metabolic engineering.  相似文献

Aims: To develop a colorimetric colony‐screening assay to facilitate the isolation of micro‐organisms capable of defluorination. Methods and Results: A metal‐dye chelate, zirconium‐xylenol orange was used to detect fluoride ions released from a fluorinated substrate through microbial metabolism. Depolymerised zirconium reagent gave the greatest visual contrast for the presence of fluoride compared to more polymerised forms of zirconium reagent. The sensitivity of the assay was greatest when the molar ratio of depolymerised zirconium to xylenol orange was 1 : 2. Using depolymerised zirconium and xylenol orange (150 and 300 nmol l?1 respectively), the assay could detect a fluoride application spot (5 mmol l?1) containing 50 nmoles of fluoride ions. Most media constituents were well tolerated by the assay, although phosphate ions needed to be restricted to 0·1 g l?1 and some proteins digest to between 1 and 5 g l?1. A microbial enrichment culture growing on solidified medium containing 20 mmol l?1 fluoroacetate was screened using the assay, and defluorinating bacteria belonging to the genus Burkholderia isolated. Conclusions: A method was developed that is sensitive, rapid and reliable for detecting defluorination by micro‐organisms growing on solidified medium. Significance and Impact of the Study: This method can be used to facilitate the isolation of micro‐organisms capable of defluorination.  相似文献

A total of 19 pathogenic bacterial species was isolated from uterine swabs of 498 out of 1539 mares over 4 years. The swabs were taken by 5 veterinary clinicians using 2 different techniques. Bacterial contamination during swabbing was minimized by scrupulous attention to cleansing of the external genitalia and the perineal area, and in the handling of the culture specimen. The most prevalent organisms isolated were beta-haemolytic streptococcus (39%), Escherichia coli (27%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (7%). Interpretation of microbiological findings correlated well with clinical findings when number of organisms isolated and endometrial cytology were considered. The use of a bacterial transport medium combined with sophisticated culture methods reflects a more accurate picture of the uterine microflora than can be obtained by previous techniques. Streptococci isolated were uniformly sensitive to penicillins. The sensitivity of E. coli and K. pneumoniae towards chloramphenicol, gentamicin and polymyxin was nearly 100%. The selection of an appropriate antibacterial agent depends upon sensitivity, pharmacological action, genital tract status and cost. This study shows that a Gram stain of uterine cytology can be used to diagnose quickly and select an appropriate antibiotic for treatment prior to culture results if sufficient numbers of organisms are present.  相似文献
