The response pattern and orientation detection of "timer" and "scanner" neurons were investigated in awake, immobilized cats with reduced contrast (2.3 and 10.0) between the light stimulus and the background. These two divisions had already been made [3, 5] at a high contrast level of 100. During this action, all scanners were found to retain their properties: they did not change into timers. The number of timers, however, dropped to 40% of their original total. The relationship between the properties of neurons belonging to these groups remained as it was during maximum contrast: with timers, response began and peaked earlier; it was also of higher frequency and briefer, while its capacity for orientation detection was far inferior to that of scanners. The neurons leaving the timer group following a reduction in contrast manifested a pattern somewhere between timer and scanner cells, resembling the latter in a number of parameters. Findings confirmed the deduction that both timer and scanner neurons are present and operate consistently under a wide range of conductions in the cat visual cortex; the former fulfill the functions of synchronizers and the latter of directional filters which are rearranged in time [5].Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. The mathematical model for evolution of the plant-microbe facultative mutualistic interactions based on the partners’ symbiotic feedbacks is constructed. Using the example of rhizobia-legume symbiosis, we addressed these feedbacks in terms of the metabolic exchange resulting in the parallel improvements of the partners’ fitness (positive feedbacks). These improvements are correlated to the symbiotic efficiency dependent on the ratio of N2-fixing bacterial strains (“genuine mutualists”) to the non- N2-fixing strains (“symbiotic cheaters”) in the root nodules. The computer experiments demonstrated that an interplay between the frequency-dependent selection (FDS) and the Darwinian (frequency-independent) selection pressures implemented in the partners’ populations ensures an anchoring or even domination for the newly generated host-specific mutualists (which form N2-fixing nodules only with one of two available plant genotypes) more successfully than for the non-host-specific mutualists (which form N2-fixing nodules with both plant genotypes). The created model allows us to consider the mutualistic symbiosis as a finely balanced polymorphic system wherein the equilibrium in bacterial population may be shifted in favor of “genuine mutualists” due to the partner-stipulated selection for an improved symbiotic efficiency implemented in the plant population.  相似文献

The mutants referred to as facultative dominant lethals were selected in the progeny of gamma-irradiated Drosophila males. The mutant males were viable and fertile, though their crosses with females of the yellow line yielded no daughters. The mutations obtained differed from the common mutations by (1) extremely varying penetrance of F1 hybrids from crosses with various lines; (2) the uncertain relationships between the mutant and normal alleles; (3) the different expression in somatic and germ cells; (4) the dependence of the expression on the sex of the parent carrying the donor mutations; (5) the mass morphosis formation and (6) the frequent reversal to the norm. These mutations are assigned to the regulatory group and their specific expression (see above) can be helpful in identifying regulatory gene mutations. We assume that the specific expression of the mutations studied is related to specific properties of the regulatory genes. These properties are as follows: (1) only one out of two homologous regulatory genes located on one homolog is in an active state, (2) in the haploid chromosome set the regulatory gene is represented by several alleles (cys-alleles); (3) only one allele ensures the regulatory gene activity.  相似文献

A total 12 consecutive children with secondary deformities following total obstetric brachial plexus palsy were included in this retrospective study. In all patients, the main complaints were two socially disabling hand postures: the "beggar's" hand and/or the "unshakable" hand. All children had a supinated forearm with no active pronation and were teased by their friends, who called them "beggars." When the impairment was severe and involved the right hand and wrist, children also complained that they were not able to shake hands. The management approach to these children was described, with the main aim of surgery being the correction of the abnormal posture. Other simultaneous tendon transfers were also performed to improve hand function if there were suitable musculotendinous units. Successful reconstruction was accomplished in all patients. Preoperatively, some children refused to go to school because of teasing, and most did not want to interact socially. After surgery, all children attended school regularly, and parents reported much better social interaction. However, the functional gain was never enough to dramatically improve the daily use of the limb. The contralateral normal limb remained the dominant one for all daily activities, including writing and eating.  相似文献

Temporary overexpansion of the tissues at each filling session increased the actual inflation volume by about 59 percent. This shortened the process of tissue expansion considerably. "Overexpansion" means that the pressure in the expander is increased to a point where the dermal capillary flow is zero or the patient experiences so much discomfort that inflation cannot be carried out any further. The pressure in the expander is thereafter gradually decreased by taking out saline until both the capillary refill and all other clinical criteria are sufficient for safe dermal circulation. Comparison of the expander volume at the final pressure to the initial filling volume at the same pressure before the "overfilling" confirmed an average gain of about 59 percent in 14 patients.  相似文献

It is known from earlier work that two conserved Glu residues, designated "catalytic carboxylates," are critical for function in P-glycoprotein (Pgp). Here the role of these residues (Glu-552 and Glu-1197 in mouse MDR3 Pgp) was studied further. Mutation E552Q or E1197Q reduced Pgp-ATPase to low but still measurable rates. Two explanations previously offered for effects of these mutations, namely that ADP release is slowed or that a second (drug site-resetting) round of ATP hydrolysis is blocked, were evaluated and appeared unsatisfactory. Thus the study was extended to include E552A, -D, and -K and E1197A, -D, and -K mutants. All reduced ATPase to similar low but measurable rates. Orthovanadate-trapping experiments showed that mutation to Gln, Ala, Asp, or Lys altered characteristics of the transition state but did not eliminate its formation in contrast e.g. with mutation of the analogous catalytic Glu in F1-ATPase. Retention of ATP as well as ADP was seen in Ala, Asp, and Lys mutants. Mutation E552A in nucleotide binding domain 1 (NBD1) was combined with mutation S528A or S1173A in the LSGGQ sequence of NBD1 or NBD2, respectively. Synergistic effects were seen. E552A/S1173A had extremely low turnover rate for ATPase, while E552A/S528A showed zero or close to zero ATPase. Both showed orthovanadate-independent retention of ATP and ADP. We propose that mutations of the catalytic Glu residues interfere with formation and characteristics of a closed conformation, involving an interdigitated NBD dimer interface, which normally occurs immediately following ATP binding and progresses to the transition state.  相似文献

Online resources for the bovine genome analysis are provided at the most important Web sites. Nonetheless, retrieval of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-related information is not always easy when searches must focus on complementary features. In this work, we present the Bovine SNP Retriever: a user-friendly tool for bovine SNP retrieval that also facilities the retrieval of SNP-related information within user-selected quantitative traits loci regions and reverse electronic polymerase chain reaction analysis on the bovine genome. Host-parasite relationship and associated biochemical changes in the “Green ear” disease of Bajra {Pennisetum typhoides Stapf and Hubb.} caused by Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet. have been studied in this laboratory for the past few years (SINHA 1965). To make further progress in the understanding of digenean immune evasive tactics in their snail host, we compared the haemopoietic parameters and haemocyte functional potencies in the prosobranch Littorina littorea, which were either healthy or infected with echinostome trematode Himasthla elongata. The haemocyte concentration in the circulation of infected individuals was significantly higher than in uninfected ones, 3300 microl(-1) and 1882 microl(-1), respectively. Intense haemopoiesis in haemolymph of infected snails was evidenced by 4-fold higher BrdU incorporation into nuclei of haemocytes as well as elevated level of cyclin D expression in these cells. Evident skewing of the haemocyte population toward a higher frequency of immature, undifferentiated haemocytes in infected L. littorea was found. Haemocytes in infected snails had a much lower functional potency in production of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) and cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Correlation analysis shows that both cytotoxic and ROI generation values were significantly and negatively correlated with proportion of juvenile cells in circulation. Experimental injection of H. elongata excretory/secretory products modulated haemopoiesis toward increasing a juvenile cells proportion by 7th day post-injection. This can be considered a haemogram "left-shift" by analogy to that seen in the human neutrophil compartment, when more immature bandforms are found in blood during acute inflammation or bone marrow disorders. We hypothesize that echinostomatide trematodes may interfere in the normal neuroendocrine management of haemopoiesis in the host and cause a haemopoietic signal to initiate multiplication to near neoplastic levels.  相似文献
