Oxygen uptake in relation to body size during the early life of the fish Channa punctatus shows a significant two-component curve: one related to the fully aquatic phase and the other to the bimodal phase of respiration. The onset of the air-breathing habit around the 18–20th day after hatching brings about a 45% drop in O2 uptake through the gill/skin in water.  相似文献

The O2 consumption (mg/hr) through water in case of Anabas testudineus during development and growth has been measured and its relationship to body weight or length studied.The logarithmic plot of 02 uptake through water either against body weight or length suggested a statistically significant (P > 3.53) two-component curve, the point of intersection being at 11 mg body weight and 1.78 cm body length. These are the theoretical values of weight or length at which the responsibility of supplementing nearly 40% of the total O2 demand through the newly developed air breathing organ falls in the early life of the fish. One of the impelling causes forcing developing fry of Anabas to adopt a bimodal gas exchange machinery seems to be 4 fold increase in the diffusion distance at the gills.  相似文献

The pituitary of Heteropneustes fossilis is divisible into rostral (RPD) and proximal (PPD) pars distalis, and pars intermedia (PI). Neurohypophysis extensively ramifies in the PI. The RPD is formed of acidophilic prolactin cells and lead hematoxylin (H. Pb) positive ACTH cells. The latter is arranged around the neurohypophysial extensions. The PPD is comprised of thyrotrophs (TSH) and gonadotrophs which are stainable with PAS, AF, and aniline blue. Acidophilic somatotrophs (STH) and chromophobes are scattered throughout the PPD. In the pars intermedia PAS positive and H. Pb positive cells are present. The latter is believed to secrete MSH whereas the function of the former is yet to be confirmed. In the partly and completely thyroidectomised H. fossilis the TSH cells exhibited marked hypertrophy. They are located in the middle of the PPD flanked by the gonadotrophs on either side. Hypertrophy of the ACTH cells were also evident. But the other cell types did not show any marked changes as compared to the controls.  相似文献

No significant changes in plasma cortisol and plasma osmolarity (the indicators of primary and secondary response respectively) were observed when the blood samples were obtained from unanaesthetized, anaesthetized and stressed catfish, H. fossilis. The results suggest that the catfish is fairly hardy and not easily susceptible to stress by routine laboratory handling. The sustained plasma glucose levels and decreased liver and muscle glycogen concentrations during cessation of feeding of the catfish suggest that during period of food deprivation, it draws its energy through glycogenolysis. Hence, in any study dealing with carbohydrate metabolism, the catfish needs to be fed during acclimation and experimental periods.  相似文献

Summary The gill secondary lamellae are generally covered with epithelial cells whose outer surfaces form numerous microvilli. The surface of the primary lamellae is characterised by microridges. A particular type of surface sculpturing seems to be associated with given cell boundaries.Further evidence for the derivation of the air tube and fans which guard its entrance by modification of the basic gill structure has been obtained from both the gross surface architecture and microstructure of the individual cell surfaces. Secondary lamellae are represented by stubby projections which generally have a biserial arrangement. The outer surfaces of the epithelia overlying the capillaries of these respiratory islets are coated with microvilli as in the secondary lamellae. On the other hand, the relatively smooth-surfaced lanes between groups of respiratory islets have a microridged surface similar to that of the primary gill lamellae.It is suggested that previous estimates of surface area, and consequently diffusing capacities of the air-breathing organ, have been low in view of the increased surface, due to both their gross and microstructure. Summary Localization and characterization of different lipids in the cellular constituents of the skin of Heteropneustes fossilis has been made using several histochemical techniques.High contents of cholesterol, its esters and phospholipids have been correlated with the metabolically active state of the basal cells undergoing cell proliferation and differentiation.The polygonal cells in the outermost layer of the epidermis, though rich in phospholipid contain small amounts of cholesterol and its esters. This has been correlated with the metabolically less active state of these cells.Neutral lipids and phospholipids in the polygonal cells of the outermost layer may contribute to the contents of surface slime and act as an efficient barrier for the penetration of water through the skin.The deposits of neutral lipids in the subcutis may provide energy during the period of fasting, act as a barrier for water diffusion through the skin and serve as shock absorbing pads protecting the fish from mechanical injury.Supported by a post doctoral fellowship sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of IndiaSupported by a research scholarship sponsored by Banaras Hindu University  相似文献

The present paper describes the results of a study on the salinity tolerance of two freshwater fishes, Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard) and Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch). The two species were treated with various concentrations of sea water and three most common salts found in the saline waters of Iraq, namely sodium chloride, calcium chloride and potassium chloride. The mortality rates following these treatments were recorded. Both species showed the highest degree of resistance for sea water and sodium chloride, and the lowest degree of tolerance to potassium chloride. Gambusia affinis was more resistant to these salts and sea water than H. fossilis .  相似文献

The surface architecture of the olfactory rosette ofHeteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. The olfactory rosette is an oval structure composed of a number of lamellae arranged pinnately on a median raphe. The raphe is invested with epithelial cells and pits which represent goblet cell openings. On the basis of cellular characteristics and their distribution the lateral surface of each olfactory lamella is identified as sensory, ciliated non-sensory and non-ciliated non-sensory epithelium. The sensory epithelium is provided with receptor and supporting cells. The ciliated non-sensory epithelium is covered with dense cilia obscuring the presence of other cell types. The non-ciliated non-sensory epithelium is with many polygonal areas containing cells.  相似文献

A single injection of L-triiodothyronine (T3) in different doses (0.25, 0.5, 5, 20 and 50 micrograms/g) increased the hepatic mitochondrial cytochrome-linked alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (alpha-GPD) activity and mitochondrial protein content of Singi fish, as observed on the 3rd day. A non-linear dose-response relationship with respect to enzyme activity was observed with different doses of T3. A low dose of 0.1 micrograms of T3 per g failed to cause any change in alpha-GPD activity and mitochondrial protein content of the liver. The enhancement of alpha-GPD activity over the control level with a low and a high dose of T3, viz., 0.5 and 5 micrograms/g, was followed from the 1st to the 7th day, when it was found that enzyme activity reached the maximum level on the 3rd day and then gradually declined to the control value on the 7th day. The percentage increase in enzyme activity with 5 micrograms/g was higher than that with 0.5 microgram/g from the 2nd to 5th day. Compared to the control, these two doses of T3 caused an increase in alpha-GPD activity from the 1st to the 6th day. Cycloheximide inhibited the T3-induced increase in alpha-GPD activity, mitochondrial and total protein content of liver. Immersion of Singi fishes in thiourea-containing (1 mg/ml) medium for 30 days showed a fall in hepatic alpha-GPD activity in comparison to the euthyroid control. A single injection of T3 (0.5 microgram/g) to the hypothyroid fish recovered alpha-GPD activity to more than the euthyroid control level. An increase in mitochondrial protein content in the T3-injected hypothyroid fish has been observed. DNA content of the fish liver remained unchanged in every experimental condition. The results thus showed the significant responsiveness of the fish liver to thyroid hormone.  相似文献

The administration of acid extract of corpuscles of Stannius has no effect on the plasma calcium level, in the normal fish, whereas the same dose shows typical hypocalcemic response in hypercalcemic fish, H. fossilis. The catfish, H. fossilis, survives for long periods after hypophysectomy, although with impaired osmoregulatory mechanisms. Plasma osmolarity and cortisol levels decline significantly within 2 hr after hypophysectomy and attain the lowest values by about 27 hr. Hypophysectomy also results in a marked decrease in urine flow rate principally due to reduced glomerular filtration. The reduction in the ability of the kidney of hypophysectomized catfish to eliminate water results in hyperhydration of blood and muscle. Urine osmolarity and sodium concentration increase due to reduced tubular reabsorption of sodium. There is, however, no net change in the total urinary sodium loss. The catfish survives in fresh water after hypophysectomy presumably because its tissues can tolerate significant dilution of the body fluids.  相似文献
