A late (SR 52) and an early (N × K) variety were grown, with irrigation, on well fertilized soil at three sites, Chiredzi (altitude 420 m), Henderson (1260 m) and Grasslands (1620 m). Mean incoming radiation was similar at all sites, while mean temperature decreased as altitude increased. Final total and grain dry weights were greatest at Henderson, and those of SR 52 exceeded those of N × K, although not greatly at Chiredzi. Initially, leaf area index (L) decreased with increase in altitude, but plants flowered later as altitude increased, and L at the time of flowering was greatest at Henderson. L at flowering was greater in SR 52 than in N × K, though only slightly so at Chiredzi. Leaves withered sooner after flowering at Chiredzi and Grasslands than at Henderson, but leaves of the two varieties withered at about the same time after flowering at each site. During most of the vegetative phase the efficiency of the leaves and crop growth rate (C) increased with decrease in altitude, and were greater in N × K than in SR 52. More dry matter was accumulated after flowering at Henderson than at the other sites, and more by SR 52 than by N × K at Henderson and Grasslands, but not at Chiredzi. Leaf area duration (D) after flowering was greater at Henderson than elsewhere, and greater in SR 52 than in N × K, except at Chiredzi. After flowering leaf efficiency (dry weight increase ÷D) was least at Henderson and greatest at Grasslands, but differed little between varieties at each site. The fraction in the grain of the dry matter accumulated after flowering decreased with increase in altitude and was greater in SR 52 than in N × K.  相似文献

Chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flower production was investigated in natural populations of the perennial herb Oxalis montana in southern Quebec, Canada. Every 10–12 days during two flowering seasons, we recorded the reproductive output of approximately 2,000 plants distributed among five forest sites. The percentage of plants flowering, proportion of flowering plants producing CH and CL flowers, CH and CL flower number per flowering plant, and the proportion of flowers that are CL differed significantly among sites and corresponded to site differences in forest type and habitat quality. Unlike patterns in most CL species, however, reproduction by cleistogamy increased in sites with habitat conditions favorable to plant growth and sexual reproduction, and decreased in less productive sites. Chasmogamous and CL flower production increased with increasing plant size but plant size explained a significantly greater proportion of the variation in CL flower numbers. The percentage of flowering plants producing CH flowers decreased between years while the proportion of CL flowers increased at all sites during the second flowering season. The somewhat unusual aspects of reproduction in Oxalis may stem from its perennial habit which allows use of stored resources in adjusting the balance of cleistogamy versus chasmogamy in different environmental regimes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of waterlogging on annual regeneration in the dwarf birch (Betula nana L.), and to determine which demographic factors are responsible for the absence of B. nana in the waterlogged parts of a peat-bog. Growth parameters and demographic data were collected from 2001 to 2003 at four sites in the Linje peat bog in the Chełmno Lake District in northern Poland. Three of the sites represented waterlogged open bog communities. The fourth site served as the reference. The density of first-year ramets, annual shoot growth, and the proportion of flowering shoots was significantly lower at the waterlogged sites than at the reference site. No seedlings were found during the course of the study, even though flowering and fruit production took place at the reference site. The flowering shoots were mainly between nine and thirteen years old. Ramets in this age range were found only at the reference site due to high mortality in mature ramets at the waterlogged sites. Mean ramet height was significantly lower at the waterlogged sites than at the reference site, and was strongly correlated with mean ramet age. The distribution of B. nana in peat bogs is limited primarily by two demographic factors: the high mortality rate in older ramets, and the low rate of vegetative reproduction. Another contribution factor is that the proportion of older fertile ramets is low. The effects of fluctuations in the water table on distribution of B. nana are also discussed.  相似文献

Life-cycle and foraging patterns of native Bombus terrestris populations were investigated at two sites in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, Phassalis (0 – 100 m above sea level [a.s.l.]) and Termessos (500 – 700 m a.s.l.). Bumble-bee activity was recorded during standard bee walks from November 2003 until the end of October 2004, each site being visited three times every month during the one-year period. The yearly dynamics of flight, the flowering plant species visited, and the visitation frequencies of these plants were recorded during every bee walk at both sites. There were considerable differences between the two populations with regard to the dates when the queens emerged from diapause (the emerging season), the timing of the appearance of sexuals (young queens and males), and the total number of plant species visited. Bombus terrestris queens emerged from diapause in November-December at the Phassalis site (coastal area) and in February-March at the Termessos site. The queens aestivated at the Phassalis site, whereas they hibernated at the Termessos site. Only one generation per year was produced at each site. The duration of the queens’ diapause lasted 5 – 8 months and length of the life cycle 190 – 215 days. Native B. terrestris populations were noted to forage on 47 flowering plant species from 20 families (10 at the Phassalis site and 40 at the Termessos site) during the study period. Two of the plant species (Arbutus unedo L. and Vitex agnus-castus L.) have long flowering periods and play a crucial role in the life cycle of native B. terrestris populations. The emergence of queens at the aestivation site was synchronized with the flowering of Arbutus unedo L., while the emergence of sexuals coincided with the flowering of Vitex agnus-castus L. at both sites. The timing and abundance of flower production is important to the reproductive success of angiosperms as well as pollinators and floral and seed herbivores. Exotic plants often compete with native plants for space and limiting resources, potentially altering community floral dynamics. We used observations and a biomass-removal experiment to explore the effects of an invasive exotic flowering plant, Linaria vulgaris, on community and individual species flowering phenology and abundance in subalpine meadows in Colorado, USA. Invasion by L. vulgaris was associated with a shift in both the timing and abundance of community flowering. Invaded plant communities exhibited depressed flowering by 67% early in the season relative to uninvaded communities, but invaded sites produced 7.6 times more flowers than uninvaded sites once L. vulgaris began flowering. This increase in flowers at the end of the season was driven primarily by prolific flowering of L. vulgaris. We also found lower richness and evenness of resident flowering species in invaded plots during the period of L. vulgaris flowering. At the species level, a common native species (Potentilla pulcherrima) produced 71% fewer flowers in invaded relative to uninvaded plots, and the species had reduced duration of flowering in invaded relative to uninvaded sites. This result suggests that L. vulgaris does not simply alter the flowering of subordinate species but also the flowering of an individual common species in the plant community. We then used observational data to explore the relationship between L. vulgaris density and resident floral production but found only partial evidence that higher densities of L. vulgaris were associated with stronger effects on resident floral production. Taken together, results suggest that a dominant invasive plant can affect community and individual-species flowering.  相似文献

Continually flowering plants bloom continuously throughout the year, as often seen in plants distributed along the roadsides or in the understory layers in Southeast Asia's tropical rain forests. Dillenia suffruticosa (Griff. ex Hook. f. & Thomson) Martelli (Dilleniaceae) is one such continually flowering shrub that flowers during periods of community‐wide mass flowering, general flowering (GF), and non‐GF. During irregularly occurring GF periods, when species of all forest layers flower synchronously for several months, some pollinators migrate to the canopy layer, where GF promotes the pollination success of participating plants. Continually flowering plants share the available pollinator community with GF plants, and the reproductive success of continually flowering plants may be affected during the GF period. To assess the effects of GF on the reproductive success of a diverse range of continually flowering plants, we examined the differences in pollinator density and reproductive success between GF and non‐GF periods in D. suffruticosa at four different research sites. Although the seed set differed among the four research sites, pollinator density and fruit set did not differ between GF and non‐GF periods or research sites. Our results suggest that the reproductive success of D. suffruticosa was maintained at an approximately constant level, regardless of the flowering phenology of the canopy layer or other vegetation components.  相似文献

We have examined the surface (0–10 cm) soil characteristics of sites after bamboo (Cephalostachyum pergracile) mass flowering and death (DB sites) in comparison with sites with living bamboo (Bambusa tulda) (LB sites) in a seasonal tropical forest in Thailand. One year after bamboo flowering the DB sites were acidic with lower concentrations of exchangeable Ca and Mg and soil nitrogen than the LB sites. Therefore, although leaf and root litter of the dead bamboo was deposited in the DB sites after bamboo flowering, soil nutrient status decreased.  相似文献

Plant growth and reproductive output of the winter annual invasive thistle, Carthamus lanatus was characterised in relation to plant size in three native populations in southern France. The effects of the rosette-crown feeding fly Botanophila turcica on these plant characteristics were assessed by comparing unattacked with naturally attacked plants at each site and by a field experiment. Indirect effects of B. turcica on plant seed production were also compared with direct seed loss caused by a guild of capitulum-feeding insects that incidentally attacked the marked plants at these sites. C. lanatus showed no size or weight requirement for flowering, but larger flowering plants produced less total receptacle surface and less seed production (female reproductive potential) in proportion to plant weight than smaller flowering plants. B. turcica did not select hosts on the basis of size or density. B. turcica reduced plant relative growth rate (RGR) in all situations, but attacked plants compensated fully at two of three sites as attack failed to halt rosette growth. Attacked plants suffered 12 % mortality, and 71 % lower seed production than unattacked plants at the site with the lowest RGR. This corresponded to 9 % lower seed production for the whole thistle population compared to 8.6–19.5 % direct seed loss to capitulum insects across all sites.  相似文献

Phenological studies in combination with aerobiological studies enable one to observe the relationship between the release of pollen and its presence in the atmosphere. To obtain a suitable comparison between the daily variation of airborne pollen concentrations and flowering, it is necessary for the level of accuracy of both sets of data to be as similar as possible. To analyse the correlation between locally observed flowering data and pollen counts in pollen traps in order to set pollen information forecasts, pollen was sampled using a Burkard volumetric pollen trap working continuously from May 1993. For the phenological study we selected the main pollen sources of the six pollen types most abundant in our area: Cupressaceae, Platanus, Quercus, Plantago, Olea, and Poaceae with a total of 35 species. We selected seven sites to register flowering or pollination, two with semi-natural vegetation, the rest being urban sites. The sites were visited weekly from March to June in 2007, and from January to June in 2008 and 2009. Pollen shedding was checked at each visit, and recorded as the percentage of flowers or microsporangia in that state. There was an association between flowering phenology and airborne pollen records for some of the pollen types (Platanus, Quercus, Olea and Plantago). Nevertheless, for the other types (Cupressaceae and Poaceae) the flowering and airborne pollen peaks did not coincide, with up to 1 week difference in phase. Some arguments are put forward in explanation of this phenomenon. Phenological studies have shown that airborne pollen results from both local and distant sources, although the pollen peaks usually appear when local sources are shedding the greatest amounts of pollen. Resuspension phenomena are probably more important than long-distance transport in explaining the presence of airborne pollen outside the flowering period. This information could be used to improve pollen forecasts.  相似文献

植物物候是指示生态系统对气候变化响应的重要证据。已有研究多基于代表性站点的物候观测数据研究物候特征及其对气候变化的响应规律。同一气候区内,不同站点的物候变化及对温度变化响应的敏感度是否一致仍需深入探讨。本文选择同属于暖温带湿润区汾渭平原气候区的西安和宝鸡为研究区,利用"中国物候观测网"在两个站点21个共有物种的开花始期和开花末期数据,比较了1987—2016年两站点各植物花期物候变化特征及其对温度变化响应的敏感度差异。结果表明,西安和宝鸡各物种的开花始期和开花末期均以提前趋势为主。大部分物种开花始期在西安的提前趋势(平均趋势-0.57 d/a)明显强于在宝鸡的提前趋势(平均趋势-0.29 d/a),但开花末期趋势差异不显著。除紫薇和迎春的敏感度差异较大外,其他物种开花始期和开花末期的温度敏感度在两站点间非常接近,无显著差异。由此可见,在同一气候区的不同站点,因增温幅度不同,植物的始花期变化存在较大差异,不能用单站点的物候变化反映整个气候区的物候变化。但同一植物在单站点的温度敏感度可以较好的反映同一气候区其他站点的植物物候-气候关系。本文研究结果可为利用有限站点的物候观测数据分析区域物候变化及对气候变化的响应提供科学依据。  相似文献

Warmer temperatures are accelerating the phenology of organisms around the world. Temperature sensitivity of phenology might be greater in colder, higher latitude sites than in warmer regions, in part because small changes in temperature constitute greater relative changes in thermal balance at colder sites. To test this hypothesis, we examined up to 20 years of phenology data for 47 tundra plant species at 18 high‐latitude sites along a climatic gradient. Across all species, the timing of leaf emergence and flowering was more sensitive to a given increase in summer temperature at colder than warmer high‐latitude locations. A similar pattern was seen over time for the flowering phenology of a widespread species, Cassiope tetragona. These are among the first results highlighting differential phenological responses of plants across a climatic gradient and suggest the possibility of convergence in flowering times and therefore an increase in gene flow across latitudes as the climate warms.  相似文献

Phytophagous insects use a wide range of indicators or associated cues to avoid laying eggs in sites where offspring survival is low. For insects that lay eggs in flowers, these unsuitable sites may be created by the host plant's resource allocation to flowers. In the sequentially flowering host plant, Yucca glauca, late‐opening distal flowers are more likely to be aborted in the presence of already‐initiated basal fruits because they are strong resource sinks. If flowers are aborted, all eggs of the phytophagous insect, Tegeticula yuccasella, within the flower die. We used the phytophagous insect T. yuccasella that lays eggs in and pollinates host plant Y. glauca flowers to test the hypothesis that phytophagous insect females are less likely to invest eggs in host plant flowers if basal fruits are present because they are more likely to be aborted. We also investigated potential predictors of arrival of T. yuccasella at inflorescences at the onset of flowering. These factors may influence a phytophagous insect's decisions to select oviposition sites. We carried out a behavioral experiment using wild‐caught T. yuccasella females on manipulated inflorescences with distal flowers with basal fruits and without fruits. As potential predictors of T. yuccasella arriving at inflorescences, we used floral display size and day of onset of flowering. In support of our hypothesis, our experimental results showed that T. yuccasella was significantly less likely to oviposit in distal flowers on inflorescences with basal fruits. We also found that T. yuccasella arrival was higher at inflorescences with larger floral display size and earlier in the flowering season. These findings uncover a novel indicator of unsuitable oviposition sites—the presence of basal fruits, that phytophagous insects use to make oviposition decisions. Further, our study contributes to the growing body of evidence that shows that females prefer sites that increase the probability of survival of their offspring.  相似文献

Fluctuations of pungent principles of hot pepper fruits (capsaicinoid), chlorophylls, carotenoid, and fresh fruit weight in Capsicum annuum var. annuum cv. Karayatsubusa at different growth stages after flowering were examined. Capsaicinoid was first detected 20 days after flowering, and reached maximal level around 40 days after flowering, then later decreased gradually. The capsaicinoid composition did not show any appreciable change throughout the stages after flowering. CAP and DC were the major components in all of the stages examined. By using radioisotopic technique, it was found that the main formation and accumulation sites of capsaicinoid are in the placenta of the fruits.  相似文献

The flowering of Myristica insipida R. Br. was studied in two rain forest communities in northern Queensland. This dioecious, subcanopy tree had a male-biased sex ratio at both study sites. In the lowland population the male-bias could be attributed to males (trees producing staminate flowers) starting to flower at a smaller average size than females (trees producing pistillate flowers). There were no intersexual differences in spacing or distribution within the study sites. Males trees flowered earlier, flowered longer, and produced over twice as many flowers as females during the study season. Although the onset of flowering was rather variable, 18–22 days following heavy rains, most trees had a synchronous period of maximum flowering. Pollination manipulations determined that there was no fruit development without pollination, and that increasing pollen loads resulted in increased fruit set with diminishing effect. Taking into account the sex-ratios and intersexual differences in flower production, the pollen-ovule ratio was calculated to be 16,000–19,000. Male trees were found to expend more energy on flowering than female trees. Open-pollination resulted in 1.0% of female flowers setting fruit. The much greater cost of fruit production resulted in females expending 421% more energy on reproduction than males. Fruit and seed production were judged to be pollination-limited. Nonetheless, this species exhibited several characteristics that are predicted if dioecy evolved by means of sexual selection.  相似文献

Hurricane disturbance may have strong effects on plant-animal interactions important in plant reproductive success. Components of reproductive success (flowering, pollination, seed predation) in the tropical shrub Ardisia escallonioides (Myrsinaceae) were examined from 1991–1994 in four southern Florida populations. Hurricane Andrew struck three of the four populations on 24 August 1992. Hurricane Andrew delayed flowering by two months in 1992. In 1993 and 1994, the three hurricane-damaged populations had increased flowering and inflorescence production compared to 1991 and 1992, while the undamaged population had no flowering. Hurricane disturbance had different effects on generalist versus specialist plant-animal interactions. Species composition and relative abundance of the generalist pollinator community that visits A. escallonioides was similar before and after the hurricane, indicating little effect of the disturbance on this interaction. In contrast, populations of a specialist flower galling moth (Periploca sp., Cosmopterigidae) declined in 1992 following Hurricane Andrew. Although moth populations increased at two of the three sites in 1993, the relative impact of moth predation on seed production was low due to extensive flower production. One moth population suffered local population extirpation for two years, reestablishing itself in November 1994. Hurricane disturbance resulted in a window of opportunity for massive seed production of Ardisia escallonioides in south Florida. Total seed production in 1993 increased twelve to seventy-three times the 1992 levels. Total seed production declined in 1994, but remained high compared to prehurricane levels.  相似文献

Landraces often contain genetic diversity that has been lost in modern cultivars, including alleles that confer enhanced local adaptation. To comprehensively identify loci associated with adaptive traits in soya bean landraces, for example flowering time, a population of 1938 diverse landraces and 97 accessions of the wild progenitor of cultivated soya bean, Glycine soja was genotyped using tGBS®. Based on 99 085 high‐quality SNPs, landraces were classified into three sub‐populations which exhibit geographical genetic differentiation. Clustering was inferred from STRUCTURE, principal component analyses and neighbour‐joining tree analyses. Using phenotypic data collected at two locations separated by 10 degrees of latitude, 17 trait‐associated SNPs (TASs) for flowering time were identified, including a stable locus Chr12:5914898 and previously undetected candidate QTL/genes for flowering time in the vicinity of the previously cloned flowering genes, E1 and E2. Using passport data associated with the collection sites of the landraces, 27 SNPs associated with adaptation to three bioclimatic variables (temperature, daylength, and precipitation) were identified. A series of candidate flowering genes were detected within linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks surrounding 12 bioclimatic TASs. Nine of these TASs exhibit significant differences in flowering time between alleles within one or more of the three individual sub‐populations. Signals of selection during domestication and/or subsequent landrace diversification and adaptation were detected at 38 of the 44 flowering and bioclimatic TASs. Hence, this study lays the groundwork to begin breeding for novel environments predicted to arise following global climate change.  相似文献

Abstract. Empirical data on many species of terrestrial orchids suggest that their flowering pattern over the years is extremely irregular and unpredictable. A long search for the reason has hitherto proved inconclusive. Irregular flowering was attributed to costs associated with sexual reproduction, to herbivory, or to the chaotic behaviour of the system represented by difference equations describing growth of the vegetative and reproductive organs. Data on the seasonal growth of leaves and inflorescence of Dactylorhiza majalis are used here to test alternative explanations of the irregular flowering patterns of orchids. These patterns are found to be extremely rare in our data set. Neither costs of reproduction nor grazing seem to explain the rare events of a transition from flowering one year to sterility or absence the next year. These transitions are almost exclusively characteristic of one of four experimental sites, the only unmown site, where the mean leaf area and incidence of flowering in the whole population is also in decline. It is therefore hypothesized that irregular flowering regimes may be characteristic of sites with temporarily or steadily declining populations and that they are usually not present in prosperous ones - at least for D. majalis.  相似文献

In 2013, a project to reintroduce Cypripedium calceolus in the Swiss Jura was organised between the Swiss Orchid Foundation at the Herbarium of Jany Renz, Basel, Switzerland and Anthura B.V., Bleiswijk, Holland with the approval of the Nature Conservation authorities of nine cantons in the Swiss Jura. Seed was legally collected from sites in the nine cantons and was successfully grown to flowering size by the commercial nursery in the Netherlands. Three thousand flowering sized plants were successfully reintroduced to 43 sites in the summer of 2018. Monitoring in successive years has shown a success rate of over 50% and much higher in some sites. The successful collaboration of conservation authorities, a charitable foundation (Swiss Orchid Foundation) and a commercial company (Anthura B.V.) in the conservation of an endangered plant might serve as a model of how other projects might be run.
