Temperature and salinity tolerances were determined for larval California grunion, Leuresthes tenuis (Ayres), and compared with previous data for Gulf of California grunion, L. sardina (Jenkins & Evermann). Larvae of similar age and acclimation history showed little interspecific difference in thermal tolerance, as measured by half-hour LT50 values for 20–30 day old late postlarvae acclimated at various temperatures, and by upper and lower incipient lethal temperatures for 18°C-acclimated prolarvae. The upper incipient lethal temperature differed by 1 deg.-C (32°C for L. tenuis, 31°C for L. sardina), while the lower incipient lethal temperature for the 18°C acclimated prolarvae of both species was 7.5°C. L. tenuis larvae were much less euryhaline than L. sardina, with incipient lethal salinities of 4.2–41 %. for prolarvae and 8.6–38 %. for 20-day-old postlarvae; comparable values for L. sardina are 4–67.5 %. and 5–57.5 %. Both species show a decrease in temperature and salinity tolerance with age. The larvae of these disjunct congeners show a significant physiological divergence in euryhalinity but not in overall temperature tolerance. These tolerances are discussed in relation to the respective geographic ranges and behavioral responses of the two species.  相似文献

Prawns Palaemon serratus (Pennant) of different body sizes — from 2–6 cm. acclimated at four different temperatures (13, 17, 21, and 25 C), were tested for their tolerance of extreme high and low temperatures.Time-temperature curves based on 50%., survival show an increase in low temperature tolerance and a decline in high temperature tolerance with increasing body size, but the upper and lower lethal temperatures of the different size groups tested for each acclimation temperature arc very similar, especially for extreme high temperatures.Acclimation has a much more pronounced effect than body size on tolerance of extreme temperatures. Prawns acclimated at low temperatures are more resistant to extremely low temperatures, while acclimation to high temperatures increases survival at extreme high temperatures. In some size groups for which acclimation temperature is very close to the limit (smallest prawns acclimated at 13 C and largest prawns acclimated at 25 C) no advantage is gained by acclimation. Acclimation at 21 C appears to ensure the highest relative resistance of P. serratus to extreme high temperatures.Seasonal distribution and migratory behaviour are discussed in relation to these results; it appears that these phenomena cannot be entirely explained by tolerance of extreme temperatures.  相似文献

Gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) encounter a wide range of temperatures and salinities in nearshore and estuarine juvenile habitats. The energetic response of juvenile gray snapper to temperature and salinity was measured in laboratory experiments to determine the influence of these physicochemical factors on the potential value of different juvenile nurseries. Maximum consumption and growth rates of juvenile (25-50 mm SL) gray snapper were determined in 12-day trials at 20 temperature/salinity combinations representing conditions in juvenile habitats. Ad libitum feeding level of individual fish was measured daily. Maximum weight specific feeding rate increased significantly with temperature and salinity; however, the effect of salinity was much less than that of temperature. Linear growth rate and specific growth rate both increased with temperature, and salinity did not have a significant effect on either. Gross growth efficiency (K1, growth×consumption−1*100) increased with temperature and was significantly lower at high salinities, indicating increased energetic costs. The higher K1 at lower salinities has several implications for juvenile gray snapper in low salinity habitats: (1) they would need less food to achieve the same somatic growth as juveniles in high salinity habitats; (2) they would have higher growth at limited ration levels as compared to high salinity habitats; and (3) they would have less impact on prey populations than higher salinity habitats assuming similar gray snapper densities.  相似文献

Chicks of both sexes issued from the cross of heterozygous K/k+ cocks for the slow-feathering sex linked K allele with k+ (rapid feathering) hens, were compared from the age of 4 to 10 weeks at two ambient temperatures. In individual cages, 30 male chicks of each genotype (K/k+ and k+/k+) were raised at 21°C, and 60 others, distributed in the same way, were raised at 31°C. 71 K/W females and 69 k+/W females were raised in a floor pen at 31°C till 10 weeks of age. In the males, the body weight, feed consumption and feed efficiency at different ages were influenced only by temperature (lower growth rate and feed intake at 31°C); no significant effects of the genotype at locus K nor genotype × temperature interaction were observed. In females, all at 31°C, the genotype (K/W or k+/W) had no significant effect on growth rate. Plumage weight and weight of abdominal fat (absolute or related to body weight) were measured on half of the males of each group in individual cages, at 10 weeks of age. Moreover, on 36 males and 48 females of the two genotypes, in a group battery at 31°C, the absolute and relative weight of plumage were measured on a sample every two weeks between 4 and 10 weeks. In the first case, no significant effect of genotype appeared. In the second case, an interaction between age and genotype was suggested from plumage weight: its growth, especially in male chicks, appears to be temporarily and unexpectedly faster from 4 to 6 weeks of age for the K/k+ and K/W genotypes.  相似文献

Metabolic and ventilatory parameters were measured for the smallest and largest Isoodon bandicoots; the arid-adapted Barrow Island golden bandicoot (Isoodon auratus barrowensis) and the tropical northern brown bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus). I. a. barrowensis has a number of physiological characteristics that aid its tolerance of high Ta and survival in a hot and dry climate, including a low and labile body temperature, a very low basal metabolic rate, low total evaporative water loss, and an effective panting mechanism. I. macrourus generally has an “average” physiology for a bandicoot despite its size, although a number of its physiological characteristics aid survival in (sub)tropical conditions. These include a low body temperature, low total evaporative water loss and minute ventilation at high ambient temperatures, and an average thermal conductance. These data support the theory that phylogeny is a more important predictor of bandicoot physiology than habitat/distribution.  相似文献

White oaks (Quercus section, Quercus subgenus) are widely distributed in Europe. Quercus petraea (sessile oak), an economically important species is predicted to be affected by climate change. Q. pubescens (pubescent oak) and Q. virgiliana (Italian pubescent oak) are economically less important, drought tolerant species. Frequent hybridization of white oaks was observed and currently the introgression of Q. pubescens and Q. virgiliana in non-mediterranean regions of Europe has been reported. Our goal was to use tissue cultures established from individual trees of the above taxa and their putative hybrids, all present in the forest stand of Síkf?kút LTER Research Area (NE Hungary) as simple experimental model systems for studying drought/osmotic stress tolerance. Tissue cultures are more suitable models for such studies, than seedlings, because they are genetically identical to the parent plants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG6000) treatments were used for this purpose. The identification of taxa was based on leaf morphological traits and microsatellite analysis and showed that Q. petraea is genetically distinct to all other taxa examined. We established six callus lines of Quercus. As expected, in Q. petraea cultures PEG6000 induced severe loss of fresh weight and the ability to recover after removal of the osmoticum, which was not characteristic for Q. pubescens and Q. virgiliana. Putative hybrids exhibited an intermediate response to osmotic stress. Activity gels showed the increase of single-strand preferring (SSP) nuclease and no significant change of guaiacol-peroxidase activities in drought-sensitive genotypes/cultures and no significant increase of SSP nuclease activities accompanied with increases of guaiacol-peroxidase activities in drought-tolerant ones. This indicates that drought/osmotic stress tolerance is associated to increased capacity of scavenging reactive oxygen species and hence less susceptibility to DNA damage. Our results confirm that tissue cultures of oak are suitable model systems for studying drought/osmotic stress responses.  相似文献

The effects of water stress were investigated in two Tunisian Medicago truncatula populations collected from arid (Mt-173) and sub-humid (Mt-664) climates and two Tunisian M. laciniata populations originating from arid (Ml-173) and semi-arid (Ml-345) regions. After a pre-treatment phase (24 days after sowing, DAS) of watering at 100% of field capacity (FC), the plants were either irrigated at 100% FC or at only 33% FC. After 12 days of treatment (36 DAS), one lot of dehydrated plants was rewatered at 100% FC. A final harvest was carried out after 24 days of treatment (48 DAS). Measured parameters were total dry weight (TDW), root shoot ratio (RSR), leaf relative water content (RWC), osmotic potential (OP), photosynthetic parameters (CO2 net assimilation A, stomatal conductance gs and transpiration E), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and leaf contents in inorganic (Na+ and K+) and organic solutes (proline and soluble sugars). Under water deficit conditions, compared to M. laciniata, M. truncatula populations showed a higher reduction in TDW, A, gs and RWC associated with a higher increase in MDA concentration. Thus, the relative tolerance of M. laciniata populations to water shortage would be related to their lower intrinsic growth rate and stomatal control of gas exchange. TDW, A, gs, E and RWC were more decreased by water deficit in Ml-345 than in Ml-173. Drought tolerance of Ml-173 was found to be associated with a more pronounced decrease of OP and a lower reduction in RWC due to the accumulation of solutes such as proline, soluble sugars and K+. In addition, Ml-173 showed the highest water use efficiency values (WUE) and the lowest MDA concentrations under water deficit stress.  相似文献

Basic equations have been derived linking the electrophoretic migration in a stationary pH gradient of simple, singly charged cations or anions and of mono- mono- valent ampholytes with the pKs of their ionizable groups. In the case of diprotic ampholytes, an equation and a curve are described calculating a correction factor to be applied to the mobility measurements, accounting for the influence of the opposite charge species on the mobility curve of the ion being measured. This correction factor is a function of ΔpK and increases exponentially with decreasing values of ΔpK. These theoretical considerations have been experimentally verified by running pH-mobility curves of colored compounds, such as methyl red, neutral red and dexorubicin. The pKs thus measured were in excellent agreement with the pKs obtained independently by spectrophotometric titrations.  相似文献

The salinity, temperature and pH tolerance of Procephalothrix simulus Iwata, 1952, were experimentally studied. In hypo-media, the nemerteans could survive 96 h in 3.3‰ solution at 10 °C (median lethal salinity [LS50] was not determined at this temperature), and 96 h LS50 were 7.3‰ and 13.5‰ at 20 °C and 30 °C, respectively. In hyper-media, 96 h LS50 values were 53.9‰, 47.1‰ and 41.4‰ at 10 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C, respectively. The trend of body weight changes in diluted media indicated that this nemertean is a volume regulator. During a 96-h exposure in media at 0 °C, worms were thanatoid but could recover if the temperature was gradually elevated to 20 °C. In thermal tolerance experiments, the nemertean survived 96 h in seawater of 30 °C, and worms suffered high mortalities when the temperature exceeded 32 °C. Present results suggest that the interaction of temperature and salinity on the lethal effects on P. simulus is significant (P < 0.05). Elevated temperature (range 10-30 °C) decreased the worm's solute tolerance, and elevated salinity (range 18-38‰) decreased the worm's thermal tolerance. The survival pH level for this nemertean ranged from 5.00 to 9.20.  相似文献

Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) which are thiol-based peroxidases have been implicated in the toxic reduction and intracellular concentration regulation of hydrogen peroxide. In Arabidopsis thaliana At2-CysPrxB (At5g06290) has been demonstrated to be essential in maintaining the water-water cycle for proper H2O2 scavenging. Although the mechanisms of 2-Cys Prxs have been extensively studied in Arabidopsis thaliana, the function of 2-Cys Prxs in rice is unclear. In this study, a rice homologue gene of At2-CysPrxB, OsPRX2 was investigated aiming to characterize the effect of 2-Cys Prxs on the K+-deficiency tolerance in rice. We found that OsPRX2 was localized in the chloroplast. Overexpressed OsPRX2 causes the stomatal closing and K+-deficiency tolerance increasing, while knockout of OsPRX2 lead to serious defects in leaves phenotype and the stomatal opening under the K+-deficiency tolerance. Detection of K+ accumulation, antioxidant activity of transgenic plants under the starvation of potassium, further confirmed that OsPRX2 is a potential target for engineering plants with improved potassium deficiency tolerance.  相似文献

We studied the thermal tolerances of Rhinella arenarum during the dry and wet seasons of the Monte Desert in San Juan Province, Argentina. This toad had differences in CTmax between dry and wet seasons, and the CTmax values were higher in the wet season (Austral summer). Operative temperature, body temperature, environmental maximal temperature, and relative humidity were related to CTmax, suggesting seasonal acclimatization of R. arenarum. Additionally, the CTmax recorded for R. arenarum was 36.2 °C, and the maximum ambient temperature recorded during the toads' activity time was 37 °C. Also, the CTmin recorded for R. arenarum was 5.3 °C and the minimum environmental temperature recorded was 7.2 °C. The wide thermal tolerance range recorded and the relationship between tolerance limits and the environmental extremes indicate that seasonal acclimatization is an effective mechanism by which toads can raise their thermal tolerance, allowing them to survive in the challenging conditions of the Monte Desert. Additional studies are needed to understand the relationship between the thermal tolerance of this desert amphibian and the environmental parameters that influence its thermal physiology.  相似文献

There has been an increasing interest in using the brackish water mysid Neomysis integer as a toxicological test species for Western European estuarine systems. In this respect, more data on growth, moulting and development in this species is needed. The influence of prevailing environmental variables (e.g. temperature, salinity) and age on these processes as well as their optimal range have to be known in order to develop optimal laboratory cultures and to differentiate between chemically induced variability and natural variability in toxicity testing. Individual post-marsupial growth (size, intermoult period, growth factor) was studied from first day neonates until adulthood at eight environmentally relevant temperature-salinity conditions. Three salinities (5, 15 and 30 psu) were tested at 15 and 20 °C, and two more extreme temperatures (8 and 25 °C) were tested at a salinity of 5 psu.Survival and growth of N. integer were detected within the whole range tested, but sexual maturation was only possible in the narrower range of 15-25 °C and 5-15 psu. The size at maturity of N. integer increased with decreasing temperature and increasing salinity. Salinity seems to have a stronger effect than temperature on the duration of maturation. The sigmoid von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted to the individual and pooled data, except for the 8 °C experiment where growth was linear. Estimates from pooled data were comparable with individually based estimates, but generally underestimated the asymptotic length. Temperature was negatively correlated with the asymptotic length and positively correlated with the growth constant K. Higher temperatures caused smaller intermoult periods but had no effect on the growth increment, while salinity effects were less straightforward and dependent on the water temperature. A tool is provided to estimate the age, moult number, intermoult period, growth factor and growth rate from the body standard length of N. integer. Experimentally derived von Bertalanffy parameter estimates resulted in a higher growth performance index compared with field-based estimates for the Schelde estuary and Galgenweel populations of N. integer.  相似文献

The acute oxygen consumption of Donax vittatus (da Costa) freshly collected at different times from a beach at Barrassie, Ayrshire, Scotland, has been measured at different temperatures. The logarithmic relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight showed a significant difference on only one occasion, and a common regression coefficient (b) of 0.865 could be used for regressions of oxygen consumption on weight. Over the temperature range 2.9–20 °C oxygen consumption rose with temperature. There was a linear decline of Q10 with temperature in the range 2.9 –20 °C. Differences in values of the constant (a) in the regression equation suggest that there is some acclimation to temperature, resulting in rotation of the rate/temperature curve counterclockwise for warm-acclimated animals, and a reduction of Q10 in cold-acclimated animals. The differences in oxygen consumption which result are small and appear to have little practical significance. High levels of metabolically-inactive materials such as stored glycogen reserves lead to a reduction in the weight-specific oxygen consumption. Spawning animals show an increased oxygen consumption.  相似文献

Thirty-six kangaroo rats were captured in the Mojave Desert near Las Vegas. Eight rats, group A, were kept at room temperature, 25 ± 2 °C. Ten, Group B, were kept at 13–15 °C and fed ad libitum. Eighteen, group C, were kept at 13–15 °C and fed only 2 g of dry oats daily. Rate of O2 consumption, VO2, food intake, rectal temperature, Tre., body weight and composition were measured in all groups. Group B showed a significant increase in VO2, and food intake and no change in Tre body weight as compared to group A. After 2 days on the limited food intake group C began to lose weight, and Tre then began to fluctuate ranging between 14 and 36 °C; the animals exhibited hibernation when the Tre was low. Eight of the 18 rats of group C reached Tre values of 14 °C or below; only one of these survived. The lowest Tre in the other 10 was 15 °C; all survived. Chemical analysis of the homogenized rats showed a significant decrease in body fat in group C to average 1.0% contrasted with 7.8% in group B and 3.7% in group A. The VO2 ranged from 1.9 ml/g hr at a Tre of 36.5 to 0.2 ml/g hr at a Tre of 15 °C. In conclusion D. merriami utilizes hibernation as an effective adaptive mechanism to carry out their essential body functions when on a limited food intake. It seems that maintaining a level of more than 1.5% of body fat is essential for successful arousal from hibernation.  相似文献

S-adenosylmethionine synthetase was studied from bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei, the agent of African sleeping sickness. Two isoforms of the enzyme were evident from Eadie Hofstee and Hanes-Woolf plots of varying ATP or methionine concentrations. In the range 10–250 μM the Km for methionine was 20 μM, and this changed to 200 μM for the range 0.5–5.0 mM. In the range 10–250 μM the Km for ATP was 53 μM, and this changed to 1.75 mM for the range 0.5–5.0 mM. The trypanosome enzyme had a molecular weight of 145 kDa determined by agarose gel filtration. Methionine analogs including selenomethionine, L-2-amino-4-methoxy-cis but-3-enoic acid and ethionine acted as competitive inhibitors of methionine and as weak substrates when tested in the absence of methionine with [14C]ATP. The enzyme was not inducible in procyclic trypomastigotes in vitro, and the enzyme half-life was > 6 h. T. b. brucei AdoMet synthetase was inhibited by AdoMet (Ki 240 μM). The relative insensitivity of the trypanosome enzyme to control by product inhibition indicates it is markedly different from mammalian isoforms of the enzyme which are highly sensitive to AdoMet. Since trypanosomes treated with the ornithine decarboxylase antagonist DL-α-difluoromethylornithine accumulate AdoMet and dcAdoMet (final concentration ≈ 5 mM), this enzyme may be the critical drug target linking inhibition of polyamine synthesis to disruption of AdoMet metabolism.  相似文献

The cold tolerance mechanism of the Antarctic terrestrial mite Alaskozetes antarcticus (Michael) was investigated in cultured animals. Freezing is fatal in this species and winter survival occurs by means of supercooling, which is enhanced by the presence of glycerol in the body. There is an inverse, linear relationship between the concentration of glycerol and the supercooling point, which may be as low as ?30°C. Feeding detracts from supercooling ability by providing ice nucleators in the gut which initiate freezing at relatively high sub-zero temperatures. Experiments on the effects of various environmental factors showed that low temperature acclimation gave rise to increased glycerol concentrations and suppressed feeding, while desiccation also stimulated glycerol production. Photoperiod had no effect on cold tolerance in this species. The juvenile instars of A. antarcticus were found to possess a greater degree of low temperature tolerance than adults.  相似文献

We examined the effects of increasing salt concentrations on the decay of the common aquatic angiosperm, Triglochin procerum R. Br. (Juncaginaceae) from a freshwater wetland close to Gippsland Lakes, eastern Vic., Australia. Rate of decay, measured as leaf mass loss, and microbial enzymatic activity, used as a surrogate for microbial activity, were measured on leaves placed in mesocosms ranging in electrical conductivity from 100 to 45,000 EC. The rate of leaf mass loss was up to three times slower in salt concentrations of 45,000 EC (∼69% ash-free dry leaf weight remaining after 21 days), compared to salt concentrations of 100 EC (∼23%). Enzymatic activity on the leaves at 45,000 EC (0.56, A490) was about one-half that on leaves in 100 EC (1.00, A490). A second experiment measured the same variables for leaves placed in solutions of NaCl, marine salt, or an organic osmoticum, polyethylene glycol (200 Da molecular weight). Results indicated that the inhibition of leaf mass loss was ∼1.5 times greater in NaCl (∼39% remaining after 21 days) than an organic osmoticum, polyethylene glycol (∼24% remaining after 21 days), indicating a role for ionic toxicity in the salt effects. Enzymatic activity on leaves was significantly inhibited in NaCl (0.50, A490) compared with marine salt (0.74, A490) or polyethylene glycol (0.72, A490). Our findings suggest several implications for the effects of acute secondary salinisation on organic matter decomposition. Inhibition of decay rates due to acute increase in salt concentration is related to decreased enzymatic activity on decaying leaves. This relationship has ramifications for microzoan food webs based on a microbial loop of bacterial production and consumption and availability of degraded organic matter entering metazoan food webs.  相似文献

Daily ingestion rates of the pelagic hyperiid amphipod Themisto libellula were studied in the marginal ice zone of the Arctic Fram Strait by feeding experiments, respiration measurements and an allometric approach based on body mass. Amphipods were collected by stratified multiple opening/closing net hauls and Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 8) in August 2000 during the expedition ARK XVI/2 of R/V “Polarstern”. T. libellula occurred with abundances of 0.043 and 0.015 ind. m−3 in the upper 30 m of the water column at two RMT 8 stations. Based on respiration data, the daily ingestion necessary to cover metabolic energy demands measured 1.9±0.6% of body carbon per day. Actual prey consumption during feeding experiments with Calanus copepodids as prey was very similar and accounted for 1.9±1.5% day−1, indicating that feeding on Calanus can meet the energy demands of T. libellula. In general, experimental results were slightly lower than the maximum potential ingestion (2% day−1 for an individual of median body dry mass of 32 mg) estimated by an allometric equation based on body mass, but feeding experiments showed a strong variability. Reduced metabolism and low ingestion rates of T. libellula are consistent with low ambient temperature, large body size, slow growth and long life span of this polar species. The effect of the active pelagic life style of T. libellula on metabolism and ingestion rate is discussed in comparison to the sympagic (i.e. ice-associated) amphipod Gammarus wilkitzkii of similar body size living in the same environment. In relation to the mesozooplankton biomass in the investigation area, the predation impact by T. libellula was low. However, high-Arctic conditions also limit the secondary production of principal prey species, such as Calanus glacialis and Calanus hyperboreus, so that even low predation rates may affect the growth of prey populations.  相似文献
