In the last two years, we have seen a remarkable intensification in the response to AIDS in China. A number of organizations have joined and contributed to the efforts of the Chinese government in responding the AIDS epidemic in China. This article specifically describes the role of the United Nations in supporting and strengthening those responses. Achievements of the United Nations (UN) highlighted in the article include: strengthened leadership and political commitment to respond to AIDS; improved HIV/AIDS surveillance and information; expanded prevention efforts; improved treatment, care and support to people living with HIV and increased resources for AIDS programs. Additional roles of the United Nations system in the near future include strengthening national leadership by supporting the ‘three ones', i. e., one national plan on AIDS; one national coordinating authority for AIDS; and one monitoring and evaluation system for AIDS. In addition, the UN system is expected to strengthen alignment and harmonization of activities of all international organizations and improved accountability and oversight. Remaining challenges identified include increasing awareness of AIDS and reducing stigma and discrimination; reducing vulnerability and risk behaviour among specific groups; providing improved treatment, care and support for people living with HIV; promoting stronger engagement by civil society, and; addressing the gender dimensions of AIDS.  相似文献

Major advances have been made over the last decade in our understanding of the molecular basis of several cardiac conditions.Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy(HCM)was the first cardiac disorder in which a genetic basis was identified and as such,has acted as a paradigm for the study of an inherited cardiac disorder.HCM can result in clinical symptoms ranging from no symptoms to severe heart failure and premature sudden death.HCM is the commonest cause of sudden death in those aged less than 35 years, including competitive athletes.At least ten genes have now been identified,defects in which cause HCM.All of these genes encode proteins which comprise the basic contractile unit of the heart,i.e.the sarcomere.While much is now known about which genes cause disease and the various clinical presentations,very little is known about how these gene defects cause disease,and what factors modify the expression of the mutant genes.Studies in both cell culture and animal models of HCM are now beginning to shed light on the signalling pathways involved in HCM,and the role of both environmental and genetic modifying factors.Understanding these mechanisms will ultimately improve our knowledge of the basic biology of heart muscle function,and will therefore provide new avenues for treating cardiovascular disease in man.  相似文献

To determine which subtype of α1-adrenergic receptors plays a role in the regulation of blood pressure, with α1A-adrenergic receptor-mediated vasoconstriction in perfused hindlimb as a control, we compared the inhibitory effects of various ai-adrenergic receptor selective antagonists on the vasopressure responses to phenylephrine between the mean arterial pressure and hindlimb perfusion pressure in anesthetized rats. In Normotensive Wistar rats, the results showed that the inhibitory effects (dose ratios of ED50, Dr) of α1-adrenoceptor selective antagonist (prazosin, Dr 13.5±3.6 vs.15.1±4.3, n = 11), α1A-adrenoceptor selective antagonist (5-methyl-urapidil, Dr 2.4±0.9 vs. 3.7±2.3, n = 12; RS-17053, Dr 3.2±1.6 vs. 4.4±3.3, n =12) and α1D-adrenoceptor selective antagonist (BMY7378, Dr 1.9±0.9 vs. 2.2±0.8, n = 8) on phenylephrine- induced increases of perfusion pressure in the autoperfused femoral beds were the same as that in the mean arterial blood pressure in normotensive Wistar rats. The nucleolus is the most prominent compartment in the nucleus and known as the site for ribosome biogenesis ineucaryotes.In contrast,there is no such equivalent structure for ribosome synthesis in procaryotes.This raises twoconcerns that how does the nucleolus evolve and that whether the nucleolus remains playing a single role in ribosomebiogenesis along the evolution.Increasing data support new nucleolus functions,including signal recognition particleassembly,small RNA modification,telomerase maturation,cell-cycle and aging control,and cell stress sensor.Multiplefunctions of the nucleolus possibly result from the plurifunctionality of nucleolar proteins,such as nucleolin and Nopp 140.Proteomic analyses of human and Arabidopsis nucleolus lead a remarkable progress in understanding the evolution andnew functions of nucleoli.In this review,we present a brief history of nucleolus research and new concepts and unre-solved questions.Also,we introduce hepatitis D virus for studying the communication between the nucleolus and othersubnuclear compartments,and Caenorhabditis elegans for the role of nucleolus in the development and the epistaticcontrol of nucleologenesis.  相似文献
