Inflorescence and floral ontogeny are described in the mimosoid Acacia baileyana F. Muell., using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The panicle includes first-order and second-order inflorescences. The first-order inflorescence meristem produces first-order bracts in acropetal order; these bracts each subtend a second-order inflorescence meristem, commonly called a head. Each second-order inflorescence meristem initiates an acropetally sequential series of second-order bracts. After all bracts are formed, their subtended floral meristems are initiated synchronously. The sepals and petals of the radially symmetrical flowers are arranged in alternating pentamerous whorls. There are 30–40 stamens and a unicarpellate gynoecium. In most flowers, the sepals are initiated helically, with the first-formed sepal varying in position. Petal primordia are initiated simultaneously, alternate to the sepals. Three to five individual stamen primordia are initiated in each of five altemipetalous sectorial clusters. Additional stamen primordia are initiated between adjacent clusters, followed by other stamens initiated basipetally as well as centripetally. The apical configuration shifts from a tunica-corpus cellular arrangement before organogenesis to a mantle-core arrangement at sepal initiation. All floral organs are initiated by periclinal divisions of the subsurface mantle cells. The receptacle expands radially by numerous anticlinal divisions in the mantle at the summit, concurrently with proliferation of stamen primordia. The carpel primordium develops in terminal position by conversion of the floral apex.  相似文献

The inflorescence of Houttuynia cordata produces 45–70 sessile bracteate flowers in acropetal succession. The inflorescence apical meristem has a mantle-core configuration and produces “common” or uncommitted primordia, each of which bifurcates to form a floral apex above, a bract primordium below. This pattern of organogenesis is similar to that in another saururaceous plant, Saururus cernuus. Exceptions to this unusual development, however, occur in H. cordata at the beginning of inflorescence activity when four to eight petaloid bract primordia are initiated before the initiation of floral apices in their axils. “Common” primordia also are lacking toward the cessation of inflorescence apical activity in H. cordata when primordia become bracts which may precede the initiation of an axillary floral apex. Many of these last-formed bracts are sterile. The inflorescence terminates with maturation of the meristem as an apical residuum. No terminal flowers or terminal gynoecia were found, although subterminal gynoecia or flowers in subterminal position may overtop the actual apex and obscure it. Individual flowers have a tricarpellate syncarpous gynoecium and three stamens adnate to the carpels; petals and sepals are lacking. The order of succession of organs is: two lateral stamens, median stamen, two lateral carpels, median carpel. The three carpel primordia almost immediately are elevated as part of a gynoecial ring by zonal growth of the receptacle below the attachment of the carpels. The same growth elevates the stamen bases so that they appear adnate to the carpels. The trimerous condition in Houttuynia is the result of paired or solitary initiations rather than trimerous whorls. Symmetry is bilateral and zygomorphic rather than radial. No evidence of spiral arrangement in the flower was found.  相似文献

The spicate inflorescence of Saururus cernuus L. (Saururaceae) results from the activity of an inflorescence apical meristem which produces 200–300 primordia in acropetal succession. The inflorescence apex arises by conversion of the terminal vegetative apex. During transition the apical meristem increases greatly in height and width and changes its cellular configuration from one of tunica-corpus to one of mantle (with two tunica layers) and core. Primordia are initiated by periclinal divisions in the subsurface layer. These are “common” primordia, each of which subsequently divides to produce a floral apex above and a bract primordium below. The bract later elongates so that the flower appears borne on the bract. All common primordia are formed by the time the inflorescence is about 4.4 mm long; the apical meristem ceases activity at this stage. As cessation approaches, cell divisions become rare in the apical meristem, and height and width of the meristem above the primordia diminish, as primordia continue to be initiated on the flanks. Cell differentiation proceeds acropetally into the apical meristem and reaches the summital tunica layers last of all. Solitary bracts are initiated just before apical cessation, but no imperfect or ebracteate flowers are produced in Saururus. The final event of meristem activity is hair formation by individual cells of the tunica at the summit, a feature not previously reported for apical meristems.  相似文献

The inflorescence development of three species of Piper (P. aduncum, P. amalago, and P. marginatum), representing Sections Artanthe and Ottonia, was studied. The spicate inflorescences contain hundreds or even thousands of flowers, depending on the species. Each flower has a tricarpellate syncarpous gynoecium and 4 to 6 free stamens, in the species studied. No sepals or petals are present. In P. marginatum the apical meristem of the inflorescence is zonate in configuration and is unusually elongate: up to 1,170 μm high and up to 480 μm wide during the most active period of organogenesis. Toward the time of apical cessation both height and diameter gradually diminish, leaving an apical residuum which may become an attenuate spine or may be cut off by an abscission zone just below the meristem. The active apex produces bract primordia; when each is 40–55 μm high, a floral apex is initiated in its axil. Both bract and floral apex are initiated by periclinal divisions in cells of the subsurface layer. The bracts undergo differentiation rather early, while the floral apices are still developing. The last-produced bracts near the tip of the inflorescence tend to be sterile.  相似文献

The inflorescence of Hedychium coccineum Smith is thyrse, and the primary bracts are initiated in a spiral phyllotactic pattern on the sides of the inflorescence dome. Cincinnus primordia are initiated on the flank of the inflorescence apex, in the axils of primary bracts. This primordium subsequently develops a bract and a floral primordium. Then, the floral primordium enlarges, flattens apically, and becomes rounded. Sepals are initiated sequentially from the rounded corner of the primordium ring sepal initiation, and the floral primordium continues to enlarge and produces a ring primordium. Later, this ring primordium separates three common primordia surrounding a central cavity. The adaxial common primordium is the first separation. This primordium produces the posterior petal and the fertile stamen. The remaining two common primordia separate and produce respectively a petal and a petaloid, the inner androecial member. As the flower enlarges, the cavity of the floral cup becomes a rounded–triangular apex; these apices are the sites of outer androecial primordium initiation. The abaxial outer androecial member slightly forms before the two adaxial members develop. But this primordium ceases growth soon after initiation, while the two posterior primordia continue growth to produce the lateral petaloid staminodes. During this stage, gynoecial initiates in the floral cup and continues to grow until extending beyond the labellum.  相似文献

Cell fate in the development of the Arabidopsis flower   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The Arabidopsis flower consists of four concentric whorls of organs. The first (outermost) whorl consists of four sepals and the fourth (innermost) whorl is made up of two carpels. Cell fate in the first and fourth whorls was studied using X-ray-induced yellow ch-42 sectors. Sector boundaries were found to be non-random around the two whorls and four generalizations relating the marked and unmarked tissues were deduced. In the sepal and carpel whorls the smallest sectors of marked and unmarked tissue were found to be one half of a sepal and one half of a carpel, respectively. A detailed frequency-distance map of the floral primordium was made and found to be a ridge with the fourth whorl carpels at the summit and the first whorl transverse sepal pair at the base. Consideration of: the rate of loss of chimerism in the inflorescence meristem, the frequency-distance across the flower and the frequency-distance between successive flowers, was used to produce an abstract model of the inflorescence meristem.  相似文献

This paper describes inflorescence structure, including organogenesis of the panicle and flower clusters and vasculature of flowering branches, for two species of Ptychosperma, a genus of arecoid palms. The inflorescence is an infrafoliar panicle with up to four orders of branches in a spirodistichous arrangement conforming to an irregular one-half phyllotaxy. The primordium of the inflorescence is crescentic and the apex has two tunica layers, a group of central cells, and a rib meristem. The distal flower-bearing parts or rachillae of all branches develop acropetally early in ontogeny and are vertically oriented in the bud. Although these rachillae terminate branches of different sizes and orders, they are similar in size and in number of flower clusters produced. Internodes and lower parts of branches develop later. Bracts of four types are produced: a prophyll and empty peduncular bract, bracts which subtend lateral branches, bracts subtending triads, and floral bracteoles. The prophyll and peduncular bracts are tubular and completely closed around all branches until about three months before the flowers reach anthesis. Bracts subtending lateral branches and those that subtend triads enlarge by small amounts of apical, adaxial, and marginal growth to cover subtended apices during early ontogeny, but are small to absent at maturity. Flower clusters are triads of two lateral staminate and a central pistillate flower. Organogenesis indicates that the triad is a sympodial unit. Flowers develop successively, each floral apex bearing a bracteole that subtends the next flower. The vasculature of the inflorescence may be divided into two systems. Bundles of the main axis extend acropetally into the vertically oriented branches as they are initiated and form a central cylinder of larger bundles in each branch. Flower clusters are supplied by a peripheral system of smaller bundles that develop later in relation to the developing floral organs. Bundles of the peripheral system branch frequently, but branching levels are irregular. The irregular branching of peripheral bundles appears related to the phyllotaxy of the flower clusters and the random right or left position of the first flower of the triad. The level of branching of a bundle may depend on the position of a floral primordium with respect to an existing procambial strand. Three (-4) bundles supply each staminate flower and six (-10) the pistillate flower. The histologically specialized inflorescence has stomata and contains abundant starch. Tannins and raphides, spherical silica bodies, and various forms of sclerenchyma appear in sequence and apparently provide support and protection during the long exposure of the branches.

Flowering and apical meristem growth dynamics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The shoot apical meristem generates stem, leaves, and lateralshoot meristems during the entire shoot ontogeny. Vegetativeleaves are generated by the meristem in the vegetative developmentalphase, while in the reproductive phase either bracts subtendinglateral flower primordia (or paraclades), or perianth and strictlyreproductive organs are formed. Meristem growth is fully characterizedby the principal growth rates, directions, volumetric, and arealgrowth rates. Growth modelling or sequential in vivo methodsof meristem observation complemented by growth quantificationallow the above growth variables to be estimated. Indirectly, growth is assessed by cell division rates and other cell cycleparameters. Temporal and spatial changes of growth and geometrytake place at the meristem during the transition from the vegetativeto the reproductive phase. During the vegetative phase, meristemgrowth is generally indeterminate. In the reproductive phaseit is almost always determinate, but the extent of determinacydepends on the inflorescence architecture. In the vegetativephase the central meristem zone is the slowest growing region. The transition from the vegetative to the reproductive phaseis accompanied by an increase in mitotic activity in this zone. The more determinate is the meristem growth, the stronger isthis mitotic activation. However, regardless of the extent ofthe activation, in angiosperms the tunica/corpus structure ofthe meristem is preserved and therefore the mitotic activityof germ line cells remains relatively low. In the case of thethoroughly studied model angiosperm plant Arabidopsis thaliana,it is important to recognize that the flower primordium developsin the axil of a rudimentary bract. Another important featureof growth of the inflorescence shoot apical meristem is theheterogeneity of the peripheral zone. Finally, the role of mechanicalfactors in growth and functioning of the meristem needs furtherinvestigation. The characterisation of the single flower truss ( sft) mutant phenotype of tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), as well as its genetic interactions with other mutations affecting FALSIFLORA ( FA) and SELF PRUNING ( SP) genes, has revealed that SFT is a key gene in the control of floral transition and floral meristem identity. The single sft mutation produces a late-flowering phenotype in both long-day and short-day conditions. In combination with fa, a mutation affecting the tomato gene orthologous to LFY, sft completely blocks the transition to flowering in this species. Thus, the phenotype of the sft fa double mutants indicates that SFT and FA participate in two parallel pathways that regulate the switch from vegetative to reproductive phase in tomato, and that both genes are indispensable for flowering. On the other hand, the replacement of flowers by vegetative shoots observed in the sft inflorescence suggests that SFT regulates flower meristem identity during inflorescence development of tomato. In addition to these two main functions, SFT is involved in the development of both flowers and sympodial shoots of tomato. First, the mutation produces a partial conversion of sepals into leaves in the first floral whorl, and a reduction in the number of floral organs, particularly carpels. Secondly, the sympodial development in the mutant plants is altered, which can be related to the interaction between SFT and SP, a gene controlling the number of nodes in sympodial shoots. In fact, we have found that the sft phenotype is epistatic to that of sp, and that the level of SP mRNA in the apical buds of sft around flowering is reduced. SFT can therefore co-ordinate the regulation of two simultaneous developmental processes in the tomato apical shoot, the promotion of flowering in one sympodial segment and the vegetative development of the next segment.  相似文献

We have introduced the Apetala2 (Ap2) gene of Arabidopsis thaliana into Petunia hybrida. Four out of 10 Ap2 transgenic plants flowered and exhibited an altered inflorescence architecture. Internode elongation suggests that the transition from the vegetative to the inflorescence phase does occur, although flower formation is delayed and the cymose branching pattern is not established. Instead, the inflorescence continues to produce bracts and eventually terminates in an aberrant flower with an excess of floral organs. New inflorescence branches then develop from the axillary meristems of the bracts, repeating the formation of a number of bracts before conversion into a terminal, aberrant flower. These results indicate that the Ap2 gene plays a role in the determination of inflorescence meristem identity, but not as a typical A-like function, adding to the existing doubt about the general role of Ap2 gene(s) in floral development.  相似文献

FLO/LFY homologue genes were initially characterized as floral meristem identity genes and play a key role in flower development among diverse species. The inflorescence organization of chrysanthemum differs from typical dicotyledons such as Arabidopsis and Antirrhinum as clear sepals are absent, and instead, a pappus, a rudimentary sepal, is formed. To understand the mechanism of reproduction of chrysanthemum at the molecular level, DFL, a FLORICAULA/LEAFY homologous gene, was cloned from Dendranthema lavandulifolium, which is one of the original species of chrysanthemum. The DFL gene consists of a 1,236-bp open reading frame and encodes a putative protein of 412 amino acids, which is 63% identical to LFY and 70% to FLO. The expression patterns of DFL during the flower development were analyzed, and RT-PCR results showed that DFL was strongly expressed in the flower bud. In situ hybridization experiments showed that it is strongly expressed in the inflorescence bract, petal and stamen primordial tissues throughout the inflorescence development. Its expression signals were also detected in stems, leaf primordial tissues and developing inflorescence bracts.  相似文献

Initiation of axillary and floral meristems in Arabidopsis   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Shoot development is reiterative: shoot apical meristems (SAMs) give rise to branches made of repeating leaf and stem units with new SAMs in turn formed in the axils of the leaves. Thus, new axes of growth are established on preexisting axes. Here we describe the formation of axillary meristems and floral meristems in Arabidopsis by monitoring the expression of the SHOOT MERISTEMLESS and AINTEGUMENTA genes. Expression of these genes is associated with SAMs and organ primordia, respectively. Four stages of axillary meristem development and previously undefined substages of floral meristem development are described. We find parallels between the development of axillary meristems and the development of floral meristems. Although Arabidopsis flowers develop in the apparent absence of a subtending leaf, the expression patterns of AINTEGUMENTA and SHOOT MERISTEMLESS RNAs during flower development suggest the presence of a highly reduced, "cryptic" leaf subtending the flower in Arabidopsis. We hypothesize that the STM-negative region that develops on the flanks of the inflorescence meristem is a bract primordium and that the floral meristem proper develops in the "axil" of this bract primordium. The bract primordium, although initially specified, becomes repressed in its growth.  相似文献

Although the regulation of Arabidopsis floral meristem patterning and determinacy has been studied in detail, very little is known about the genetic mechanisms directing development of the pedicel, the short stem linking the flower to the inflorescence axis. Here, we provide evidence that the pedicel consists of a proximal portion derived from the young flower primordium, and a bulged distal region that emerges from tissue at the bases of sepals in the floral bud. Distal pedicel growth is controlled by the KNOTTED1-like homeobox gene BREVIPEDICELLUS (BP), as 35S::BP plants show excessive proliferation of pedicel tissue, while loss of BP conditions a radial constriction around the distal pedicel circumference. Mutant radial constrictions project proximally along abaxial and lateral sides of pedicels, leading to occasional downward bending at the distal pedicel. This effect is severely enhanced in a loss-of-function erecta (er) background, resulting in radially constricted tissue along the entire abaxial side of pedicels and downward-oriented flowers and fruit. Analysis of pedicel vascular patterns revealed biasing of vasculature towards the abaxial side, consistent with a role for BP and ER in regulating a vascular-borne growth inhibitory signal. BP expression in a reporter line marked boundaries between the inflorescence stem and lateral organs and the receptacle and floral organs. This boundary expression appears to be important to prevent homeotic displacement of node and lateral organ fates into underlying stem tissue. To investigate interactions between pedicel and flower development, we crossed bp er into various floral mutant backgrounds. Formation of laterally-oriented bends in bp lfy er pedicels paralleled phyllotaxy changes, consistent with a model where the architecture of mutant stems is controlled by both organ positioning and vasculature patterns. Collectively, our results indicate that the BP gene acts in Arabidopsis stems to confer a growth-competent state that counteracts lateral-organ associated asymmetries and effectively radializes internode and pedicel growth and differentiation patterns.  相似文献

The initiation and development of the floral organs of Brassica napus L. (cv. Westar) were examined using the scanning electron microscope. After transition of the vegetative apex into an inflorescence apex, flower primordia were initiated in a helical phyllotactic pattern. The sequence of initiation of the floral organs in a flower bud was that of sepals, stamens, petals and gynoecium. Of the four sepal primordia, the abaxial was initiated first, followed by the two lateral and finally the adaxial primordium. The four long stamens were initiated simultaneously in positions alternating with the sepals. The two short stamens were initiated basipetal to and outside the long stamens, and opposite the lateral sepals. The petals arose on either side of the two short stamens and the gynoecium was produced from the remainder of the apex. During development, the sepal primordia curved sharply at the tips and tightly enclosed the other organs. Stamen primordia developed tetralobed anthers at an early stage while filament elongation occurred just prior to anthesis. A unique pattern of bulbous cells was present on the abaxial surface of the anther. Growth of petal primordia lagged relative to the other floral organs but expansion was rapid prior to anthesis. The gynoecium primordium was characterized by an invagination early in development. At maturity, there was differentiation of a papillate stigma, an elongated style and a long ovary marked externally by sutures and divided internally by a septum. Distinct patterns of cuticular thickenings were observed on the abaxial and adaxial surfaces of the petals and stamens and on the surface of the style. The patterns were less obvious on the sepals and ovary. Stomata were present on both surfaces of the mature sepals, on the style and restricted areas on the abaxial surface of the anthers and nectaries but were absent from the petals, the adaxial surface of the stamens and the ovary. No hairs were present on any of the floral organs.  相似文献

Myristica fragrans and M. malabarica are dioecious. Both staminate and pistillate plants produce axillary flowering structures. Each pistillate flower is solitary, borne terminally on a short, second-order shoot that bears a pair of ephemeral bracts. Each staminate inflorescence similarly produces a terminal flower and, usually, a third-order, racemose axis in the axil of each pair of bracts. Each flower on these indeterminate axes is in the axil of a bract. On the abaxial side immediately below the perianth, each flower has a bracteole, which is produced by the floral apex. Three tepal primordia are initiated on the margins of the floral apex in an acyclic pattern. Subsequent intercalary growth produces a perianth tube. Alternate with the tepals, three anther primordia arise on the margins of a broadened floral apex in an acyclic or helical pattern. Usually two more anther primordia arise adjacent to each of the first three primordia, producing a total of nine primordia. At this stage the floral apex begins to lose its meristematic appearance, but the residuum persists. Intercalary growth below the floral apex produces a columnar receptacle. The anther primordia remain adnate to the receptacle and grow longitudinally as the receptacle elongates. Each primordium develops into an anther with two pairs of septate, elongate microsporangia. In pistillate flowers, a carpel primordium encircles the floral apex eventually producing an ascidiate carpel with a cleft on the oblique apex and upper adaxial wall. The floral ontogeny supports the morphological interpretation of myristicaceous flowers as trimerous with either four-sporangiate anthers or monocarpellate pistils.  相似文献
