Males often exhibit elaborate ornamentation that contributes to their fitness. Similarly, females can also exhibit elaborate ornamentation, but we have a relatively limited understanding of its function. Recent studies have demonstrated that female ornamentation can function in both intrasexual competition and male mate choice, but few studies have been conducted on lekking species. We therefore investigated the possibility that female ornamentation provides information about the dominance status of the bearer, which could mediate intrasexual competition. We examined this possibility using Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), a sexually dimorphic lekking species in which females exhibit elaborate ornamentation in the form of iridescent green neck plumage. We tested whether female ornamentation predicts dominance status using an information theoretic model averaging approach. We found that females with brighter ornamentation are more socially dominant than females with darker ornamentation. These results suggest that female ornamentation in this species provides social information about the dominance status of the bearer. This study provides insight into the evolution of conspicuous female traits by suggesting a potential role for female ornamentation in intrasexual competition in a lekking species.  相似文献

The quality of day old chicks is crucial for profitable broiler production, but a difficult trait to define. In research, both qualitative and quantitative measures are used with variable predictive value for subsequent performance. In hatchery practice, chick quality is judged on a binomial scale, as chicks are divided into first grade (Q1-saleable) and second grade (Q2) chicks right after hatch. Incidences and reasons for classifying chicks as Q2, and potential of these chicks for survival and post-hatch performance have hardly been investigated, but may provide information for flock performance. We conducted an experiment to investigate (1) the quality of a broiler flock and the relation with post-hatch flock performance based on a qualitative score (Pasgar©score) of Q1 chicks and based on the incidence of Q2 chicks and (2) the reasons for classifying chicks as Q2, and the potential of these chicks for survival and post-hatch growth. The performance was followed of Q1 and Q2 chicks obtained from two breeder flocks that hatched in two different hatching systems (a traditional hatcher or a combined hatching and brooding system, named Patio). Eggs were incubated until embryo day 18, when they were transferred to one of the two hatching systems. At embryo day 21/post-hatch day 0, all chicks from the hatcher (including Q2 chicks) were brought to Patio, where the hatchery manager marked the Q2 chicks from both flocks and hatching systems and registered apparent reasons for classifying these chicks as Q2. Chick quality was assessed of 100 Q1 chicks from each flock and hatching system. Weights of all chicks were determined at days 0, 7, 21 and 42. There were no correlations between mean Pasgar©score and post-hatch growth or mortality, and suboptimal navel quality was the only quality trait associated with lower post-hatch growth. Growth was clearly affected by breeder flock and hatching system, which could not be linked to mean Pasgar©score or incidence of Q2 chicks. Q2 chicks showed lower post-hatch growth compared to Q1 chicks but effects on flock performance at slaughter weight were limited because early mortality in Q2 chicks was high (62.50% at 7 days). We concluded that chick qualitative scores and the incidence of Q2 chicks may be informative for the quality of incubation, but are not predictive for post-hatch flock performance. Culling Q2 chicks after hatch is well-founded in terms of both animal welfare and profitability.  相似文献

Carotenoid-based ornamentation and status signaling in the house finch   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:5
The status signaling hypothesis (SSH) was devised primarilyto explain the adaptive significance of avian ornamental colorationduring the nonbreeding season. It proposes that conspicuousmale plumage serves as an honest signal of social status withina population of birds. However, to date this hypothesis hasbeen well tested and supported for only one type of plumage coloration, melanin-based coloration. Carotenoid-based pigmentationis known to positively reveal male health and condition duringmolt in a variety of species, but it is poorly understood whetherthis ornament type can also function as a status signal duringthe winter. We tested the SSH in male house finches (Carpodacusmexicanus) by manipulating the carotenoid-based plumage brightnessof first-year males and then pairing unfamiliar birds of differingcoloration in a series of dominance trials in captivity. Manipulated plumage color was unrelated to win/loss outcome in these trials.Similarly, the natural pigmentation of males was a poor predictorof winter dominance; as in other studies with this species,we found only a weak tendency for naturally drab males to dominatenaturally bright males. These results suggest that carotenoid-basedcoloration is not a reliable indicator of social status inmale house finches during the nonbreeding season. In fact, carotenoid-based coloration may function only in mate choice in this species, and it may be retained throughout the year either because timeconstraints preclude a second plumage molt or because it aidsin pair formation that begins in late winter.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence of a maternal hen influences the quality, quantity, and distribution of activity in young chicks. Brooded and nonbrooded chicks were observed during the entire light phase when they were 4 d of age. Our results revealed that although both brooded and nonbrooded chicks expressed the same behavioral items and in quite the same quantity, activity bouts were much longer in brooded chicks. However, only brooded chicks presented a high level of ultradian rhythmicity. Moreover, the brooded chicks made greater use of the space. The presence and the behavior of maternal hens appeared to provide structuring factors for the expression of the chicks' behavior.  相似文献

In Batesian mimicry, a harmless prey species imitates the warning coloration of an unpalatable model species. A traditional suggestion is that mimicry evolves in a two-step process, in which a large mutation first achieves approximate similarity to the model, after which smaller changes improve the likeness. However, it is not known which aspects of predator psychology cause the initial mutant to be perceived by predators as being similar to the model, leaving open the question of how the crucial first step of mimicry evolution occurs. Using theoretical evolutionary simulations and reconstruction of examples of mimicry evolution, we show that the evolution of Batesian mimicry can be initiated by a mutation that causes prey to acquire a trait that is used by predators as a feature to categorize potential prey as unsuitable. The theory that species gain entry to mimicry through feature saltation allows us to formulate scenarios of the sequence of events during mimicry evolution and to reconstruct an initial mimetic appearance for important examples of Batesian mimicry. Because feature-based categorization by predators entails a qualitative distinction between nonmimics and passable mimics, the theory can explain the occurrence of imperfect mimicry.  相似文献

Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.  相似文献

Scramble competition models of begging predict that junior nestlingswill be more affected by food limitation than seniors. Thesemodels assume that food allocation is under offspring controland, hence, predict that this change in food distribution iscaused by a differential behavioral response by seniors andjuniors. By using the bluethroat (Luscinia svecica svecica)as our model species, we induced food limitation by removingthe male parent temporarily. We found that, as predicted, fooddistribution became more biased in disfavor of juniors whenfood was limited. However, there was no significant differencein the behavioral responses of seniors and juniors (i.e., positioningin the nest or begging postures) to food limitation that couldexplain the change in food distribution. Hence, there was noevidence that seniors controlled food distribution. As predictedif parents preferentially fed seniors, nestling rank affectedfood distribution when controlling for variation in nestlingbehaviors. Furthermore, as expected if the increased skew infood distribution under food limitation was caused by activefood allocation by parents, nestling rank had a greater effecton food distribution under food limitation than under normalconditions. The present study suggests that food distributionin passerine birds is determined not only by nestling behaviors(begging posture and positioning) alone but also by parentalpreferences for seniors based on nonsignaling cues, such asbody size.  相似文献

I compared the mate preferences of female house finches (Carpodacusmexicanus) from populations in which males differ in both plumagecoloration and the extent of ventral pigmentation (patch size).Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the small patch of ventralcoloration displayed by males in some populations is derivedfrom a larger-patched ancestral state. Regardless of the appearanceof males in their own populations, however, females from allpopulations showed a preference for the most brightly coloredmales and males with the largest patches. A reduction in patchsize independent of a change in female mate preference is notconsistent with sensory-bias or reproductive isolation modelsof sexual selection or with general predictions of runaway modelsof sexual selection. In contrast, a lack of congruence betweenfemale mate preference and male trait expression is predictedby the honest advertisement model, with house finches respondingto variation in regional and local access to carotenoid plumagepigments.  相似文献

Ultraviolet (UV) signals are suggested to be sexually selectedin a wide range of taxa. Most research, however, has focusedon the role of UV signals in mate choice, whereas possible functionsin intraspecific competition remain largely untested. Studieson other colors indicate that ornaments preferred by femalescan also function as signals of social status in competitiveinteractions between individuals. Whereas these colors are mainlypigment based, UV reflectance is generally caused by selectivereflectance of light from surface structures. Here we test experimentallywhether the structurally based UV-reflective crown plumage inthe blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) serves as a signal of statusin interindividual competition. We reduced the crown UV reflectanceof free-living blue tits in winter and compared their probabilityof winning conflicts over food at a feeding table with control-treatedand untreated individuals. Although we controlled for effectsof sex, age, and distance from territory, we found no effectof reduced UV reflectance on the probability of winning norwere conflicts involving UV-reduced individuals more likelyto escalate. Therefore, we conclude that the UV reflectanceof the blue tit's crown does not serve as a signal of statusin competition over food in winter. We suggest that the observedsite-dependent dominance structure may constrain the opportunityfor a status signal to evolve and that enhancing attractivenessin mate choice may be the sole function of the crown's UV reflectance.  相似文献

As activin is believed to be a key signalling factor during early pancreatic development, its influence on the proliferation and/or determination of insulin cells in the developing chick dorsal pancreatic bud was investigated. Dorsal pancreatic buds of 5-day-old chick embryos were explanted on to Matrigel and cultured in serum-free medium (Ham's F12.ITS), to which 1 or 10ng/ml activin was added. After 7 days in culture, the explants were processed for immunocytochemistry and the insulin-positive cells were scored and expressed as a proportion of the sum of insulin and glucagon cells. When compared to the control cultures (Hams F12.ITS alone), activin treatment resulted in respective increases in the proportion of insulin cells of 1.6 and 1.9 fold. It is suggested that activin treatment favours differentiation of the insulin cell pathway relative to glucagon cells.  相似文献

Two molecular species of α-galactosidase with apparent MWs of 134 000 and 43 000 were separated and partially purified from germinating Cicer arietinum seeds. The two forms of the enzyme showed different kinetic and thermodynamic properties, and responses towards the specific inhibitors, but their pH optima and pH stabilities were almost identical.  相似文献

Carotenoid-based plumage ornaments are typically consideredto be sexually selected traits, functioning as honest condition-dependentsignals of phenotypic quality, but few studies have addressedthe function of carotenoid color variation in male contestcompetition. Using two experiments, we investigated the statussignaling function of the variable (ranging from yellow tored) carotenoid throat patch (collar) in the polygynous, sexually dimorphic red-collared widowbird (Euplectes ardens). First,we tested if the red collar functions as a dominance signalby painting spectrometrically controlled collar patches ontothe brown plumage of nonbreeding males and staging dyadic malecontests over food resources. Red-collared males dominatedorange males, which in turn dominated the control brown andnovel blue collars. Red dominance persisted when the collar manipulations were reversed within dyads and also when testedagainst testosterone implanted males. In the second experimentthe collar size and color of breeding males were manipulatedin the field before and after territories were established. All males with enlarged red and most with enlarged orange orreduced red collars obtained territories, whereas most maleswith reduced orange and all with blackened (removed) collarsfailed to establish or retain territories. In addition, amongthe territorial males, those with reduced signals defendedsmaller territories, received more intrusions, and spent moretime in aggressive interactions. Redness and, to a lesser extent, size of the carotenoid ornament both seem to independently indicate male dominance status or fighting ability in male contest competition.  相似文献

Conspicuous coloration is often used in combination with chemical defenses to deter predators from attacking. Experimental studies have shown that the avoidance inducing effect of conspicuous prey coloration increases with increasing size of pattern elements and with increasing body size. Here we use a comparative approach to test the prediction from these findings, namely that conspicuous coloration will evolve in tandem with body size. In our analysis, we use a previously published mitochondrial DNA-based phylogeny and comparative analysis of independent contrasts to examine if evolutionary shifts in color pattern have been associated with evolutionary changes in body size in aposematic poison frogs (Anura: Dendrobatidae). Information on body size (snout to vent length) and coloration were obtained from the literature. Two different measures of conspicuousness were used, one based on rankings by human observers and the other based on computer analysis of digitized photographs. The results from comparative analyses using either measure of coloration indicated that avoidance inducing coloration and body size have evolved in concert in poison frogs. Results from reconstruction of character change further indicate that the correlated evolution of size and coloration has involved changes in both directions within each of the different clades of the phylogenetic tree. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that selection imposed by visually guided predators has promoted the evolution of larger body size in species with conspicuous coloration, or enhanced evolution of conspicuous coloration in larger species.  相似文献

Fertilized hens' eggs were externally treated, before starting incubation, with a single dose of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic butyl ester (2,4-D b.e., 3.1 mg/egg). Chicks at different developmental stages were examined, extending from 10 day embryos to one day after hatching. Previously, we demonstrated that 2,4-D b.e. produces hypomyelination in chicks born from treated eggs. In search of the causes of this hypomyelination, myelin markers such as sulphatides, cerebrosides and 2 3-cyclic nucleotide 3-phosphohydrolase (CNPase) activity, as well as protein and nucleic acid contents were determined in the embryonic brains. We have shown in the present study that the chemical alterations occurred even before the period of active myelination, since myelin appears in chicken brain stem and cerebrum approximately after 17 days of incubation, and most of the chemical parameters studied are diminished before that time. The DNA content in brain of treated group is increased from the 14th embryonic day (with a transient diminution at 12th day) to the first hatching day, when compared to the control, suggesting a proliferation of glial cells, possibly oligodendrocytes.  相似文献

Begging in avian nestlings is a highly conspicuous behaviorwith important implications for the study of parent–offspringconflict. In some species, nestlings also call for long boutsin the absence of parents, and it has been proposed that thisbehavior is used by nestlings as a means of negotiating accessto food. We studied this phenomenon in the spotless starling(Sturnus unicolor). We found that parent-absent calls were acousticallydistinct from parent-present calls. Observations showed thatthe probability of parent-absent begging increased with nestlingage and brood size, whereas it decreased with increasing bodycondition. This result was confirmed by an experiment that showedthat nestlings produced higher parent-absent begging rates whenfood deprived than when satiated. Finally, we carried out aplayback experiment to test the reaction of nestlings to parent-absentbegging by fellow nestlings. Principle components analyses yielded2 independent components of begging: 1) a general begging componentand 2) a second factor that measures the relative contributionof communicative begging over competitive begging. Nestlingsexposed to playback decreased their general begging levels andsimultaneously increased the relative contribution of communicativeover competitive begging. This behavior may favor needy nestlingsto obtain impending feedings while keeping high levels of foodsolicitation from parents and is consistent with a cooperativestrategy among nestlings. Future research should consider theactual response of parents to these signals.  相似文献

Although the evolution of genetic color polymorphisms has receivedmuch theoretical interest, few empirical studies have investigatedthe adaptive function of alternative color morphs. Furthermore, most studies have focused almost exclusively on the evolutionand adaptive expression of male coloration, leaving the roleof conspicuous female coloration largely unknown. Using thecolor polymorphic Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae), thisstudy experimentally tests the status signaling function ofhead color (red, yellow, and black) among the 3 female colormorphs. In standardized dominance contests between unfamiliarfemales of different head colors, red-headed females dominatedboth black- and yellow-headed females. During contests betweenthe morphs, red-headed females passively displaced black- andyellow-headed opponents, whereas interactions between red-headeddyads were particularly aggressive and more frequent than interactionswithin dyads of the other color morphs. This effect of red dominancefurther persisted when head color was experimentally altered;red-manipulated females (of the other morphs) dominated bothblack- and yellow-headed females, whereas blackened red-headedfemales were dominated by naturally red-headed birds. Togetherwith similar dominance-related differences among male morphs, these results suggest that the 3 color morphs may display alternativestrategies in dominance behavior.  相似文献

To investigate the, interaction between -aminobutyric acid (GABA) and benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor sites during development, the time-course of appearance of flunitrazepam (FNZ) binding sites and their pharmacological characterization were studied in developing chick optic lobe. At the earliest stage examined, embryonic day (Ed) 12, the receptor density was 30.9 % (0.05±0.01 pmol/mg protein) of that found in the chick optic lobes of adult chicks. The adult value was achieved on Ed 16 (0.16±0.01 pmol/mg protein). After this stage there was a sharp and transient increase in specific [3H]FNZ binding of about two-fold reaching a maximal value between hatching and the postnatal day (pnd) 2 (0.33±0.01 pmol/mg protein). Scatchard analysis at different stages of development revealed the presence of a single population of specific FNZ binding sites. The increase in [3H]FNZ binding during development was due to a large number of binding sites while their affinity remained unchanged. Competition experiments in the chick optic lobe revealed that the order of potency for displacement of specific [3H]FNZ binding paralleled the pharmacological potency of the BZDs tested. The IC50 s for clonazepam, flunitrazepam, Ro 15-1788 and chlordiazepoxide were 3.02, 4.30, 0.32, and 4778.64 nM respectively. Ro 5-4864, a potent inhibitor of BZD binding to peripheral tissues, had no effect on specific [3H]FNZ binding indicating that only central BZD binding sites are present in the chick optic lobe. The peak of maximal expression of BZD receptor sites precedes in 5–6 days the peak of GABA receptor sites indicating a precocious development of BZD receptor sites. The different appearance of both peaks may represent important events during development probably related to synaptogenesis.  相似文献
