The impact of foraging byMonochamus titillator (Fab.) on within-tree populations ofDendroctonus frontalis
Zimm. was described. Total population estimates forD. frontalis and inner bark area foraged byM. titillator were computed for 89 loblolly pine,Pinus taeda L., sampled over a 3 year period. Frequency histograms were prepared for the surface area of habitat infested, area foraged
byM. titillator, and within-tree populations ofD. frontalis. These data were used to calculate the proportion of area foraged byM. titillator, the proportionalD. frontalis mortality for the entire tree, and the proportional mortality occurring in the foraged area. Histograms showing the variation
of these components were prepared and described using nonlinear mathematical models. Ca. 20% of the infested surface area
was foraged byM. titillator. Mortality toD. frontalis on a per tree basis was ca. 14%. Mortality in the area foraged byM. titillator was ca. 70%. These estimates were highly variable between individual trees and a procedure for predicting the probability
of a given level of foraging and mortality was described. Sources of variation influencing foraging byM. titillator and mortality toD. frontalis were investigated. Variation between years and season followed similar trends with both foraging and mortality increasing
from the base to the top of the infested bole. Variation between tree size-class was highly significant. Larger size-class
trees had substantially greater foraging and mortality than did the smaller size-classes. Mortality within the foraged area
was also found to be greater at the extremes of the infested bole.

Les histogrammes de fréquence ont été établis pour la surface de l’habitat infesté, la surface explorée parM. titillator et pour les populations deD. frontalis présentes dans l’arbre. A partir de ces données on a calculé la part de surface utilisée parM. titillator, la mortalité deD. frontalis extrapolée pour l’arbre entier et la mortalité se produisant dans la surface exploitée. Les histogrammes traduisant les variations de ces composantes ont été dressés en ayant recours à des modèles mathématiques non linéaires. Environ 20% de la surface infestée a été exploitée parM. titillator; la mortalité du scolyte fut d’environ 14% dans l’arbre et de 70% dans la zone attaquée parM. titillator. Ces évaluations sont très variables d’un arbre à l’autre et on a mis au point un procédé pour prévoir la probabilité d’un taux donné d’activité alimentaire du cerambycide et de mortalité du scolyte. Les causes de cette variabilité ont été étudiées. La variation suivant les années et les saisons suit les mêmes tendances à savoir l’augmentation à la fois de l’activité alimentaire et de la mortalité de la base au sommet du pin attaqué. La variation selon les classes de taille des arbres est hautement significative: les arbres les plus gros présentent une exploitation et une mortalité beaucoup plus importantes que les arbres plus petits. La mortalité du scolyte dans la zone attaquée par le cerambycide est également plus élevée aux extrémités du pin infesté.

The biology of the earwig,Doru taeniatum (Dohrn), a reported predator ofSpodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), was studied in the laboratory.D. taeniatum under laboratory conditions was easily reared, mated readily and females tended eggs and first instar nymphs.D. taeniatum developed through 4 nymphal instars and reached imago in approximately 30 days. It is an omnivore in the laboratory and capable of developing and reproduction on plant pollen alone, and on Lepidoptera eggs (Sitotroga carealella) (Olivier) alone. Immatures developed most rapidly and females were most fecund when fed either a combination ofS. cereallea eggs and pollen, orS. cerealella eggs alone. The foraging behaviour of male and female Arses telescopthalmus was studied at Brown River, Papua New Guinea. Significant differences exist between the sexes. The male mainly frequents the lower understorey and forages substantially on bare substrates, particularly vertical ones such as trunks and hanging vines. The female occurs mainly higher in the subcanopy, sallies frequently after aerial insects and forages mainly off leafy substrates. Both male and female show morphological adaptations to their specialized roles. Sexual differences in a species’foraging behaviour usually occur in depauperate avifaunas but the study area is rich in potential competitors of Arses. It is suggested that past environmental fluctuations may have initiated differentiation of male, female or both. 相似文献

We determined the effects of number of prey and the area over which they were distributed on the number of prey eaten and
the production efficiency ofMetasyrphus corollae (F.) (formelySyrphus corollae F.) larvae. We hypothesized that, for a given number of prey offered per day, increased plant size would reduce foraging
efficiency and production efficiency. Also, increased prey number was expected to increase production efficiency. Individual
larvae were offered 10, 20, 40 or 60 pea aphids each day on plants with 7.5, 35 or 73 cm2 surface area. When more aphids were offered, larvae ofM. corollae killed more of them but left larger aphid carcasses. Foraging efficiency (percentage of available aphids eaten) declined
as aphid abundance and plant size increased. Foraging costs were not decreased by increasing prey density and therefore production
efficiency was not increased.
Résumé Les effets du nombre de proies et de la surface sur laquelle elles ont été distribuées, sur le nombre de proies mangées et sur le rendement de la production des larves deMetasyrphus corollae (F.) ont été déterminés. Nous avons supposé que, pour un nombre donné de proies offertes par jour, le rendement de la quête alimentaire et de la production diminueraient avec l'augmentation de la taille de la plante. De même, on supposait que le nombre croissant de proies augmentait le rendement de la production. On offrait chaque jour à des larves individuelles 10, 20, 40 ou 50 aphides du pois, sur des plantes dont la surface était 7,5, 35 ou 73 cm2. Quand on offrait plus d'aphides, les larves deM. corollae les tuaient, mais elles laissaient alors de plus gros cadavres. Le rendement de la quête alimentaire (pourcentage d'aphides disponibles mangés) diminuait lorsque l'abondance des aphides et la taille de la plante augmentaient. Les couts de la quête alimentaire n'étaient pas réduits par l'augmentation du nombre de proies et ainsi le rendement de la production n'était pas augmenté.相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized. 相似文献

The seasonal histories and phenological relationships of European corn borer,Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), and its 2 parasitoids,Macrocentrus grandii (Goidanich) andEriborus terebrans (Gravenhorst) were studied in southcentral Minnesota. Both parasitoids overwintered in mature borer larvae, broke diapause, completed development, and emerged at the same time as did borer adults. Thus the 1st generation parasitoids coincided with the peak abundance of their preferred larval instars of the 1st host generation. Both parasitoids had a 2nd generation, matching the bivoltinism ofO. nubilatis in Minnesota. The activity of 2nd generationE. terebrans was before the peak 2nd generation borer moth flight and was not synchronized with the peak abundance of 2nd generation borer larvae. The peak activity of 2nd generationM. grandii occurred after the peak 2nd generation borer moth flight and was fully synchronized with the peak abundance of 2nd generation borer larvae. Thus,M. grandii has both generations synchronized with the host seasonal history, and was the more effective of the 2 parasitoids. 相似文献

Kinetics of growth and fumonisin production by Fusarium moniliforme MRC 826 in corn "patty" cultures were investigated, and a technique was developed for the production of [14C]fumonisin B1 ([14C]FB1) by using L-[methyl-14C]methionine as the precursor. A significant (P < 0.01) correlation exists between fungal growth and FB1 (r = 0.89) and FB2 (r = 0.87) production in corn patties, beginning after 2 days and reaching the stationary phase after 14 days of incubation. [14C]FB1 was produced by adding L-[methyl-14C]methionine daily to cultures during the logarithmic phase of production. Incorporation of the isotope occurred at C-21 and C-22 of the fumonism molecule and was enhanced in the presence of unlabeled L-methionine. Although the concentration of exogenous unlabeled methionine is critical for incorporation of the 14C label, optimum incorporation was achieved by adding 50 mg of unlabeled L-methionine and 200 mu Ci of L-[methyl-14C]methionine to a corn patty (30 g) over a period of 9 days, yielding [14C]FB1 with a specific activity of 36 mu Ci/mmol. 相似文献

Stereoselectivity of the binding sites for the specific kappa-opioid agonist [3H]U-69593, a benzeneacetamido based ligand was investigated in membrane suspension prepared from frog and rat brain, as well as guinea pig cerebellum, using the pure chiral forms of different unlabelled opiates. The ligand binding sites showed stereospecificity with at least three orders of magnitude differences in the affinities (measured as Ki values) of the opioid stereoisomer pairs both in rat and guinea pig membrane fractions. However, in frog brain membranes there was no substantial difference in potencies of the (-) and (+) isomers competing for the [3H]U-69593 binding sites. Another type of the kappa-site preferring opioid ligand, [3H]ethylketocyclazocine, a benzomorphan derivative was able to discriminate between (-) and (+) forms of the same compounds even in frog brain membrane preparation. Our data concerning binding profile of [3H]U-69593 in frog brain membranes are consistent with the observation that kappa opioid binding sites in frog (Rana esculenta) brain differ from those kappa-sites found in mammalian brains. 相似文献

Laboratory and field studies were conducted to study the suitability and efficacy ofBrinckochrysa scelestes Banks as a predator onMyzus persicae Sulzer in tobacco fields. Laboratory bred 2nd instar larvae ofB. scelestes at 6 per tobacco plant reduced the aphid population to the extent of 78% in 2 weeks. The movement of the predatory larvae
on the tobacco plant and leaf was not at all hampered by the glandular trichomes and their secretions. The larvae moved freely
and fed well and their pupae were recovered from all over the plant.

Many animal species segregate by sex. Such segregation may be social in nature, or ecological, or both. Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), like many large mammals, are sexually size dimorphic. In size dimorphic species, allometric differences in morphology, metabolic rate and reproductive costs are likely. Such differences may require the sexes to use different foraging strategies or different habitats. To investigate sexual segregation of habitat in grey seals, we used satellite tracks from 95 (male 46; female 49) adults breeding at Sable Island, Nova Scotia (44 degrees N, 60 degrees W) collected from 1995 to 2005. Location estimates were made from satellite fixes using a state-space movement model to estimate true locations and regularize them in time. Location estimates were used to calculate home range kernels of male and female habitat use each month. Month by sex kernel home ranges revealed striking differences and dynamics in habitat use between males and females on spatial scales broader than most terrestrial examples and at temporal and spatial resolutions rarely available for marine species. Differences were most pronounced just before (October-December) and immediately after breeding (February-March). During both periods, males primarily used areas along the continental shelf break, while females mainly used mid-shelf regions. Coupled with previously identified sex-specific seasonal patterns of energy storage, diving and diet, our findings suggest that males and females differ profoundly in their spatial foraging strategies. These differences may serve to maximize fitness by reducing intersexual competition during key foraging periods. 相似文献

Synthesis of [N]glutamate from [N]h(4) and [N]glycine by mitochondria isolated from pea and corn shoots

Metabolically competent mitochondria were isolated from pea and corn shoots on Percoll discontinuous density gradients. Rates of synthesis of [15N]glutamate were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after the incubation of mitochondria with either 2 millimolar [15N] H4+ or [15N]glycine in the presence of 1 millimolar citrate as the respiratory substrate. When [15N]H4+ was provided, mitochondria isolated from light-grown pea shoots synthesized [15N]glutamate with a rate of 2.64 nanomoles per hour per milligram mitochondrial protein. Corn mitochondria produced [15N]glutamate at a rate approximately 11 times greater than the pea mitochondria. Dark treatment during growth for the last 24 hours caused a slight reduction in the rate of synthesis in both species. When [15N]glycine was used, pea mitochondria synthesized [15N]glutamate with a rate of 6.32 nanomoles per hour per milligram protein. Rapid disappearance of [15N]glycine and synthesis of [15N]serine was observed with a molar ratio of 2 glycine to 0.78 serine. The rate of glutamate synthesis was only 0.2% that of serine, due in part to the dilution of [15N]H4+ by the [14N]H4+ pool in the mitochondria. The majority of the [15N]H4+ released from glycine appears to have been released from or remains unmetabolized in the mitochondria. Corn mitochondria showed no apparent disappearance of [15N]glycine and little synthesis of [15N]serine, indicating that our preparation originated primarily from mesophyll cells. Under our conditions of glycine/serine conversion, [15N]glutatmate was synthesized at a rate of 7% of that of [15N]serine synthesis by corn mitochondria. 相似文献

Artificial and modified natural hosts were exposed to females of the gypsy moth [Lymantria dispar (L.)] hyperparasite,Eurytoma appendigaster (Swederus), to investigate its host recognition behavior on the primary host, which are cocooned larvae of the gypsy moth parasite,Cotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg). Material(s) which caused drilling behavior by the hyperparasite on host cocoons were extracted with both polar and non-polar solvents. However, cocoons washed with large volumes of solvent still caused substantial drilling activities by females, suggesting that additional cues may be important. The activities of periventricular-hypophysial dopaminergic (DA) neurons were compared in male and female rats by measuring dopamine synthesis (accumulation of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine [DOPA] after inhibition of L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase) and metabolism (concentrations of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid [DOPAC]) in terminals of these neurons in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary. For comparison, the synthesis and metabolism of dopamine in the neural lobe of the pituitary and median eminence were also determined. The concentrations of DOPAC and accumulation of DOPA were higher in females than in males in both the intermediate lobe and median eminence, revealing a sexual difference in the basal activity of periventricular-hypophysial and tuberoinfundibular DA neurons. In contrast, there were no differences between male and female rats in activity of DA neurons terminating in the neural lobe. One week following gonadectomy, DOPA accumulation in the median eminence was decreased in females and increased in males, but remained unchanged in the intermediate lobe. These results indicate that sexual differences in the activity of periventricular-hypophysial DA neurons terminating in the intermediate lobe are not dependent upon the presence of circulating gonadal steroids, and in this respect, these neurons differ from tuberoinfundibular DA neurons. 相似文献

Experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of the insect parasitic nematodeHeterorhabditis sp. (HW79) as a biological control agent ofOtiorrhynchus salicicola. This weevil species is reported as a pest of ornamental plants in Switzerland and Italy. Dipping plastic boxes containing
heavily infested cuttings of laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) in a nematode suspension resulted in approximately 100% parasitisation of full-grown larvae, pupae and non-emerged young
adults. The average dose resulting from dipping varied between 56,000 and 62,000 nematodes per liter soil. This experiment
was run under natural outdoor conditions. In a further outdoor experiment, pottedLigustrum plants were inoculated with eggs ofO. salicicola and later 20,000 infective juvenile nematodes per liter soil were added to the soil surface. The resulting weevil mortality
in the treated pots was 78%. In seven greenhouse tests using the same nematode dose in pots with horticultural soil to which
weevil larvae had been added, weevil mortality varied between 76% and 100%, the arithmetic average being 90%. These results
indicate that Heterorhabditid nematodes may provide an effective means of controllingO. salicicola.
In an other experiment usingO. sulcatus larvae, the influence of application time on nematode efficacy was investigated. When nematodes were added a few days before
weevil larvae had hatched from the eggs, no parasitic effect was obtained. Nematode applications done shortly after larval
hatching however, resulted in complete weevil control. These results are of significance in timing nematode applications in
practice.
