Abstract:  Age-related progeny production and sex ratio of Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson, a koinobiont, solitary, larval endoparasitoid of two lepidopteran species, Galleria mellonella (L.) and Achoria grisella Fabr., were studied at 25± 1°C, 60 ± 5% relative humidity, and a photoperiod of 12 : 12 h (L : D). The effect of host type on fecundity and sex ratio of the hyperparasitoid Dibrachys boarmiae (Walker), an idiobiont, gregarious pre-pupae or pupae ectoparasitoid on A. galleriae was also investigated. Total progeny produced by A. galleriae showed very little host-dependent variation. The mean total number of offspring produced by a female was 232.6 and 239.7 on G. mellonella and A. grisella , respectively. Progeny production and proportion of females per host by A. galleriae decreased directly with parental age. Fecundity of D. boarmiae on A. galleriae pupae reared on G. mellonella and A. grisella was 3.3 and 2.9 respectively. Host type had no significant influence on progeny production and sex ratio of D. boarmiae .  相似文献

Venturia canescens (Grav.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a solitary larval koinobiont endoparasitoid, ovipositing in several larval instars of different pyralid moth species that are pests of stored food products. After oviposition, the host larva continues to feed and grow for at least several days, the precise time doing so depending on the stage attacked. We examined the relationship between host stage and body mass on parasitoid development in late second to fifth instars of two hosts with highly variable growth potential: the wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L) and the flour moth, Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller)(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). G. mellonella is the largest known host of V. canescens, with healthy larvae occasionally exceeding 400mg at pupation, whereas those of A. kuehniella rarely exceed 40 mg at the same stage. Parasitoid survival was generally higher in early instars of G. mellonella than in later instars. By contrast, percentage adult emergence in A. kuehniella was highest in late fifth instar and lowest in late second instar. A. kuehniella was the more suitable host species, with over 45% adult emergence in all instars, whereas in G. mellonella we found less than 35% adult emergence in all instars. Adult parasitoid size increased and egg-to-adult development time decreased in a host size- and instar-specific manner from A. kuehniella. The relationship between host size and stage and these fitness correlates was less clear in G. mellonella. Although both host species were parasitized over a similar range of fresh weights, the suitability weight-range of A. kuehniella was considerably wider than G. mellonella for the successful development of V. canescens. However, in hosts of similar weight under 5 mg when parasitized, larger wasps emerged from G. mellonella than from A. kuehniella. Parasitoid growth and development is clearly affected by host species, and we argue that patterns of host utilization and resource acquisition by parasitoids have evolved in accordance with host growth potential and the nutritional requirements of the parasitoid.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Current models of insect oviposition predict that clutch size in parasitoids should correlate with host size, with a continuum from solitary species at one end to large gregarious broods at the other. This prediction is tested for the genus Apanteles (sensu lato).
2. The distribution of brood sizes in Apanteles is bimodal, with peaks at one (solitary species) and at about twenty (gregarious species).
3. Brood size of gregarious species correlates with host size, but when a measure of the total volume of a parasitoid brood is plotted against host size, solitary species do not lie on the same regression slope as gregarious species.
4. There is a relative shortage of gregarious species on small hosts, and a relative excess of solitary species on large hosts. Solitary species on large hosts do not fully consume the host resource.
5. The possible role of evolutionary constraints to adaptive progeny allocation in Apanteles is discussed.  相似文献

Sex allocation by the polyphagous solitary pupal parasitoid wasp Pimpla luctuosa Smith to a small host species, Galleria mellonella (L.), and a large host species, Mamestra brassicae L., was investigated to test whether female wasps responded to hosts of different sizes across different host species. In the experiments, both host species were presented to each test female wasp. Primary and secondary sex ratio experiments revealed that female wasps laid more female eggs in larger pupae of each host species, indicating that female wasps recognized size differences within host species. The wasp sex ratio (male ratio) from M. brassicae, however, was much higher than that expected on the basis of the sex ratio curve from different-sized G. mellonella. Larger hosts of each host species yielded larger wasps, indicating that the host size estimation by female wasps across different host species was incomplete or was not simple. These results suggested that P. luctuosa evaluated host size not only by physical measures such as dimension but also by other unknown measures. A possible explanation for the adaptiveness of different sex ratio responses by Pimpla luctuosa to different host species was discussed.  相似文献

1. Hyssopus pallidus Askew (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) is a gregarious ectoparasitoid of the two tortricid moths species Cydia molesta Busck and C. pomonella L. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae). It paralyses and parasitizes different larval instars of both species inside the apple fruit, which leads to the death of the caterpillar. 2. We assessed the influence of host species characteristics and host food on the performance of the parasitoid female in terms of clutch size decisions and fitness of the F(1) generation. 3. A comparison of clutch size revealed that female parasitoids deposited similar numbers of eggs on the comparatively smaller C. molesta hosts as on the larger C. pomonella hosts. The number of parasitoid offspring produced per weight unit of host larva was significantly higher in C. molesta than in C. pomonella, which is contrary to the general prediction that smaller hosts yield less parasitoid offspring. However, the sex ratio was not influenced by host species that differed considerably in size. 4. Despite the fact that less host resources were available per parasitoid larva feeding on C. molesta caterpillars, the mean weight of emerging female wasps was higher in the parasitoids reared on C. molesta. Furthermore, longevity of these female wasps was neither influenced by host species nor by the food their host had consumed. In addition we did not find a positive relationship between adult female weight and longevity. 5. Parasitoid females proved to be able to assess accurately the nutritional quality of an encountered host and adjust clutch size accordingly. These findings indicate that host size is not equal to host quality. Thus host size is not the only parameter to explain the nutritional quality of a given host and to predict fitness gain in the subsequent generation.  相似文献

Many aspects of a parasitoid's biology may be affected by its host. Host size, for example, could affect parasitoid fitness, especially in gregarious parasitoids, in which the resource is used by multiple siblings. Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a gregarious larval–pupal endoparasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), a major pest of crucifers worldwide, and is able to superparasitize the host. This study focuses on the hypothesis that because resource availability is higher in larger hosts, parasitoids developing in larger hosts will fare better. However, superparasitized hosts are expected to yield larger numbers of parasitoid offspring of smaller body size. Results showed that superparasitism increased the number of parasitoid offspring produced per host and increased offspring longevity, but decreased offspring body size. However, developmental time and sex ratio of parasitoid offspring was similar among hosts parasitized once, twice, or three times. Regardless of superparasitism, parasitoids emerging from larger hosts that were fed honey solution lived longer than similarly fed progeny from smaller hosts (36.4 vs. 22.1 days). The results partially support the hypothesis that Oomyzus gained fitness from an increase in host size; moreover, superparasitism seems advantageous for Oomyzus due to increased offspring numbers and longevity.  相似文献

In this study the authors give immunocytochemical evidence for the presence of interleukin (IL)-1alpha- and tumour necrosis factor (TNF) alpha-like molecules in the haemocytes of last instar larvae from the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella. Similar results are demonstrated in a continuous haemocyte line (BTI-EA-1174-A) from the salt marsh caterpillar Estigmene acraea. In Galleria mellonella larvae granular cells show a strong positive reaction with both primary antibodies, whereas plasmatocytes are stained to a lesser extent. Cell line haemocytes also react positively with both antibodies. After activating the cells with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) staining of Estigmene acraea cells is decreased, whereas Galleria mellonella haemocytes show no visible reaction in comparison to non-activated cells.  相似文献

【目的】对性比的研究有助于我们理解自然界生物的选择压力及其所产生的原因和结果,榕树和榕小蜂之间的互惠共生关系以及生物学和生态学特性使其成为研究性比和局域配偶竞争模型(local mate competition)的理想材料。本研究旨在探明榕小蜂性比调节和进化机制。【方法】对分布于西双版纳地区的鸡嗉子榕Ficus semicordata进行了人工控制性放蜂实验。测定了母代雌蜂数量及其进果时间间隔、非传粉小蜂Sycoscapter trifemmensis数量对传粉榕小蜂Ceratosolen gravelyi后代数量(成蜂数量)和性比的影响,并分析了小蜂后代数量和性比的相关性。【结果】在榕果发育期一致的前提下,随着母代雌蜂数量的增加,每头雌蜂的平均后代数量明显下降(P<0.001),后代性比显著升高(P<0.001),后代数量和性比呈显著负相关(P<0.05);随着雌蜂进果间隔的延长,后代数量亦呈现下降趋势,且性比增大,放2头雌蜂和3头雌蜂的处理呈同样趋势,但差异均不显著(P=0.87; P=0.49),小蜂后代数量与性比无显著相关性(P=0.86)。此外,非传粉小蜂数量与传粉小蜂后代数量呈显著负相关(P<0.001),与传粉小蜂性比呈正相关(P<0.001),小蜂后代数量和性比同样呈现显著负相关(P<0.001)。【结论】本实验模拟了自然界中榕 蜂的相互作用,所得结果有助于我们理解自然状态下榕小蜂性比调节模式和机制,以及榕 蜂互利共生系统的进化机制。  相似文献

The infectivity, time to first emergence of infective juveniles (IJs), total number of IJs per insect and IJs body length of the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis megidis (strain NLH-E87.3) after development in larvae of two insect hosts, Galleria mellonella (greater wax moth) and Otiorhynchus sulcatus (vine weevil) was studied. At a dose of 30 IJs, larvae of G. mellonella show to be significantly more susceptible than O. sulcatus larvae. At a dose of one IJ, vine weevil larvae were more susceptible. The number of invading infective juveniles (IJs) increased with host size while the host mortality at a dose of one IJ decreased with the increase of host size. Time to first emergence was longer at a dose of one IJ per larva and increased with the increase of host size in both insect species. Reproduction of IJs differed between host species, host sizes and doses of nematodes. Generally, the IJs body size increased with an increasing host size. The longest infective juveniles were produced at the lowest IJ doses. Results are discussed in relation to the influence of different host species and their different sizes on the performance of H. megidis (strain NLH-E87.3) as a biological control agent.  相似文献

A 10-wk study of the avocado seed-feeding moth Stenoma catenifer Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae), was conducted in a commercial 'Hass' avocado (Persea americana Miller [Lauraceae]) orchard in Guatemala. Up to 45% of fruit in the orchard were damaged by larval S. catenifer. Larval-to-adult survivorship for 1,881 S. catenifer larvae in Hass fruit was 37%, and adult sex ratio was 51% female. Four species of larval parasitoid were reared from field-collected S. catenifer larvae. The most common parasitoid reared was a gregarious Apanteles sp., which parasitized 53% of larvae and produced on average eight to nine cocoons per host. Apanteles sp. sex ratio was 47% female and 87% of parasitoids emerged successfully from cocoons. Apanteles sp. longevity was approximately equal to 1.5 d in the absence of food, and when provisioned with honey, parasitoids survived for 5-7 d. The mean number of cocoons produced by Apanteles sp. per host, and larval parasitism rates were not significantly affected by the number of S. catenifer larvae inhabiting seeds. Oviposition studies conducted with S. catenifer in the laboratory indicated that this moth lays significantly more eggs on the branch to which the fruit pedicel is attached than on avocado fruit. When given a choice between Hass and non-Hass avocados, S. catenifer lays up to 2.69 times more eggs on Hass.  相似文献

Abstract: Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with a probe mixture of differently labeled genomic DNA from females and males highlighted the W chromosomes in mitotic plates and the W chromatin in polyploid interphase nuclei of the silkworm Bombyx mori, the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella, and the wax moth Galleria mellonella. The overproportionate fluorescence signal indicated an accumulation of repetitive sequences in the respective W chromosomes. Measurements of the fluorescence signals revealed two components, one that is present also in male DNA (non-W chromosomes) and another one that is present only in or preponderantly in female DNA (W chromosomes). While the W chromosomes of E. kuehniella and G. mellonella had both components, that of B. mori appeared to lack the latter component. Our results show that CGH can be applied to obtain a first estimate of the sequence composition of sex chromosomes in species from which otherwise little is known on the molecular level.  相似文献

Hemolymph coagulation stops bleeding and protects against infection. Clotting factors include both proteins that are conserved during evolution as well as more divergent proteins in different species. Here we show that several silk proteins also appear in the clot of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella. RT-PCR analysis reveals that silk proteins are expressed in immune tissues and induced upon wounding in both Galleria and Ephestia kuehniella, a second pyralid moth. Our results support the idea that silk proteins were co-opted for immunity and coagulation during evolution.  相似文献

Gregarious parasitic wasps, which lay more than one egg into or onto a host arthropod’s body, are usually assumed to lay an optimal number of eggs per host. If females would lay too few eggs, some resources may be wasted, but if females lay too many eggs, offspring may develop into substantially smaller-sized adults or may not develop successfully and die. The availability of hosts can further influence a female’s clutch size decision, as more eggs should be laid when hosts are scarce. Here, we analyzed clutch size decisions and the fitness consequences thereof in the ectoparasitic wasp Bracon brevicornis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a potential biocontrol agent against pest moth species. For experiments, larvae of the Mediterranean flower moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were used. Using artificially created as well as naturally laid clutches of eggs, the effects of clutch size on fitness of first (F1) and second (F2) generation offspring were investigated. Our results revealed that the fitness consequences of large clutches included both increased mortality and smaller adult sizes of the emerging offspring (F1). Smaller F1 females matured fewer eggs during their lifetime and their offspring (F2) had reduced egg-to-adult survival probability. Naturally laid clutches varied with host size up to a maximum, which probably reflects egg limitation. Clutches remained smaller than the calculated optimal (Lack) clutch size and females responded to high host availability with a decreased number of eggs laid. We thus conclude that large clutches may result in significantly smaller offspring with reduced fitness, and that host size as well as host availability influence the clutch size decision made by B. brevicornis females.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The lesser wax moth, Achroia grisella (Fabricius) (Pyralidae: Galleriinae), uses an altrasonic communication system for mate calling The male produces a 100 kHz sound by striking its tegula with the forewing. This calling sound induces virgin females to orient toward males. Although the pheromone released from the male's wing glands may stimulate kinesis in females, it does not elicit orientation. Female moths are attracted toward synthetic 40 and 72 kHz sounds which simulate the pulse length and repetition rate of the male's calling signal.  相似文献

Although ovipositing insects may predominantly use resources that lead to high offspring quality, exceptions to this rule have considerably aided understanding of oviposition decisions. We report the frequency of host species use by a solitary facultative hyperparasitoid, Brachymeria subrugosa Blanchard (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae). In our samples, the wasp attacks the large pupae of the moth Gonioterma indecora Zeller (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae), as well as the considerably smaller, and rarer, pupae of two of its other parasitoids. Consistent with conditional sex allocation models, the wasp produced mainly female offspring on the largest (moth) host, an unbiased sex ratio on the middle‐sized (parasitoid) host, and only males on the smallest (parasitoid) host. Adult offspring size was correlated with the size of the host attacked. These features strongly suggest that the two smaller, primary parasitoid, hosts produce lower‐quality offspring. Despite being more common, the proportion of hosts from which parasitoids emerged was lowest (14%) on the largest host species, and highest on the rarer middle‐sized (34%) and smallest (30%) hosts. This suggests that costs or constraints on attacking high‐quality primary hosts may be a selective force favouring the evolution of hyperparasitism.  相似文献

The parasitoid wasp genus Achrysocharoides (Eulophidae) is unusual in that many of its species lay male and female eggs in single-sex clutches. The average clutch size of female broods is always greater than that of male broods, and in some species male clutch size is always one. We constructed models that predicted that severely egg-limited wasps should produce equal numbers of male and female eggs while severely host-limited wasps should produce equal numbers of male and female broods (and hence an overall female-biased sex ratio). Theory is developed to predict clutch size and sex ratio across the complete spectrum of host and egg limitation. A comparison of 19 surveys of clutch composition in seven species of Achrysocharoides showed a general pattern of equal numbers of male and female broods with a female-biased sex ratio (suggesting host limitation) although with considerable heterogeneity amongst collections and with a number of cases of unexpectedly low frequencies of male broods. Using a previous estimate of the relationship between fitness and size in the field, we predicted the maximally productive (Lack) clutch size for female broods of Achrysocharoides zwoelferi to be three. Of clutches observed in nature, 95% were equal to or smaller in size than the predicted Lack clutch size. When we manipulated local host density in the field, and as predicted by our models, clutch size and the proportion of female broods of A. zwoelferi decreased as hosts became more common, but the absolute frequency of male clutches was lower than expected. The host preference and sex allocation of two ichneumond parasitoids, Xanthocryptus novozealandicus (Dalla Torre) and Campoplex sp., and one braconid parasitoid, Apsicolpus hudsoni Turner of the longicorn borer, Oemona hirta , were studied in New Zealand. The size of the borer larvae attacked by the parasitoids can be determined by measuring the gallery width of the borers. These parasitoids are idiobionts and their secondary sex ratio is female-biased. Females of these species are significantly larger than males, and the females allocate the sex of offspring depending on the size of host larvae, by laying female-producing eggs on significantly larger host larvae. Xanthocryptus novozealandicus is larger in body size and shorter in ovipositor length than Campoplex sp. and A. hudsoni , and consumes late instar larvae or prepupae in shallow galleries whereas the latter two utilize early to middle instar larvae in deep galleries. Campoplex sp. and A. hudsoni preferred host larvae in significantly larger tree twigs than X. novozealandicus .  相似文献

Summary Host type choice and sex allocation were examined using the solitary parasitic waspDinarmus basalis (Pteromalidae, Hymenoptera) parasitizing larvae or pupae of the bean weevilCallosobruchus chinensis (Bruchidae, Coleoptera) within azuki beans (Vigna angularis). The wasps were offered two types of host; one was hard for the mother to lay eggs in, but was more beneficial for the offspring; the other was easy for the mother to lay eggs in, but was less beneficial for the offspring. The two types of host were one large host (17-day old host) in one bean and 6 small hosts (12-, or 13-day old hosts) in one bean. The same number of each host was presented at the same time to female wasps. The wasps accepted more 17-day old hosts than 12-day old hosts, and more 13-day old hosts than 17-day old hosts in each pair-wise choice experiment. The proportions of accepted host types were different from the proportions predicted by optimization models of random prey encounter with known or unknown prey densities. The wasps showed partial preference of host types. Incomplete information about prey densities, and about the costs and benefits of the two types of host may have generated the partial preference. Two predictions of host sizemodels, that (1) there should be a negative relationship between host size and offspring sex ratio (proportion of male offsprings), and (2) the sex ratio in each size host changes with the relative frequency of each size host utilized, were qualitatively supported.  相似文献
