The divergence in reproductive features and hybrid fertility patterns between two chromosomal races (2 n  = 40, 40St, and 2 n  = 22, 22Rb) of the house mouse in Tunisia were re-assessed on a larger sample of wild and laboratory-bred individuals than studied hitherto. Results showed that litter sizes were significantly smaller in 40St than in 22Rb mice, contrary to previous analyses. This suggests that variation in litter size between the two chromosomal races is more likely related to selective and/or environmental factors acting locally than to interracial reproductive trait divergence. However, the significantly reduced litter size of F1 hybrids compared with parental individuals was confirmed, and further highlighted a sex difference in hybrid infertility, as F1 females produced fewer litters and of smaller size than males. Histological analyses of F1 and backcrosses showed a breakdown of spermatogenesis in males and a significantly reduced primordial follicle pool in females. The degree of gametogenic dysfunction was not related to the level of chromosomal heterozygosity per se , but a significant effect of two Rb fusions on follicle number was observed in hybrid females. These results suggest that genetic incompatibilities contribute to primary gametogenic dysfunction in hybrids between the chromosomal races in Tunisia.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 407–416.  相似文献

Sperm morphology can be highly variable among species, but less is known about patterns of population differentiation within species. Sperm morphology is under strong sexual selection, may evolve rapidly, and often co‐varies with other reproductive traits that differ between populations. We investigated variation in sperm morphology in the simultaneous hermaphrodite land snail Arianta arbustorum in relation to parasitic mite infection. Variation in total sperm length and sperm head length was assessed in 23 populations sampled across the distributional range of the species in Central and Northern Europe. We found a pronounced variation in total sperm length among the populations studied, with a difference of 11.0% of total sperm length between the shortest and longest population means. Differences among populations explained 62.9% of the variance in total sperm length, differences among individual snails within population 23.4% and differences within individual snail 13.7%. Mantel tests showed that interpopulation differences in total sperm length increased significantly with geographical distance between populations. A minimal adequate model revealed that parasitic infection had a positive effect and longitude a negative effect on total sperm length. Thus, independent of the population examined, mite‐infected individuals of A. arbustorum produced larger sperm than uninfected snails and total sperm length decreased from west to east. Sperm head length also varied among populations, but it was not influenced by any of the factors examined. In a subsample of 12 populations restricted to the mountains of Switzerland (elevational range 440–2485 m a.s.l.), total sperm length decreased with increasing elevation. Our results suggest that selection pressures acting among populations may differ from those acting within. Stabilizing selection might be a possible mechanism for producing the reduced variation observed in sperm length within a population. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 1036–1046.  相似文献

The Robertsonian fusion is a common chromosomal mutation among mammal species and is especially prevalent in the West European house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus. More than 40 races of the house mouse exist in Europe, including the famous “tobacco mouse” (Poschiavo race) of Val Poschiavo, Switzerland. Documented here is the discovery of an extreme case of karyotypic variation in the neighboring Upper Valtellina, Italy. In a 20-km stretch of the valley, 32 karyotypes were observed, including five chromosomal races and 27 hybrid types. One previously unknown race is reported, the “Mid Valtellina” race, with a diploid number of 2n = 24 and the Robertsonian fusions Rb(1.3), Rb(4.6), Rb(5.15), Rb(7.18), Rb(8.12), Rb(9.14), Rb(11.13), and Rb(16.17). The Poschiavo race (2n = 26), Upper Valtellina race (2n = 24), Lower Valtellina race (2n = 22) and all-acrocentric race (2n = 40) were also present. The races form a patchy distribution, which we term a “mottled hybrid zone.” Geographical position, isolation, extinction, recolonization, and selection against hybrids are all believed to be instrumental in the origin and evolution of this complex system. Previous studies of house mice from Upper Valtellina indicated that two of the races in the valley (the Upper Valtellina and Poschiavo races) may have speciated in the village of Migiondo. We discuss the possibility that there may have been a reinforcement event in this village.  相似文献

In mice bearing the Rb(6.16) or Rb(6.15) Robertsonian translocation (Rb), sperm dysfunction associated with the Rbs has been shown to lead to transmission ratio distortions (TRDs) in heterozygotes. The severity of the TRDs is directly related to the severity in the alteration of expression of the gene for the Sperm Adhesion Molecule 1 (Spam1), which maps to proximal mouse Chromosome 6 (Chr 6) near the translocation junction and encodes a sperm antigen with hyaluronidase activity. Here we demonstrate that there is a significantly reduced fertility in the Rb homozygotes (P < 0.001), based on litter size; and that with the Sperm Select Penetration assay Rb-bearing sperm have significantly decreased (P < 0.02–0.001) rates of penetration of hyaluronic acid. Catalytic kinetics studies indicate that reduced Spam1 (PH-20) hyaluronidase activity in the Rb(6.15) mice results from a qualitative defect, while for Rb(6.16) with the greater TRD both a qualitative and a quantitative deficiency (confirmed by Western analysis) of Spam1 exist. Six point mutations were shown to be clustered in the Spam1 hyaluronic acid-binding domain in Rb(6.15). For Rb(6.16) which has a gross genomic alteration at the Spam1 locus, 11 point mutations are scattered in the 5′ and 3′ UTRs and the coding region, where one leads to the replacement of a conserved residue. Entrapment of spontaneous Spam1 mutations, owing to recombination suppression near the Rb junctions, is proposed as the major underlying defect of the sperm dysfunction. In wild populations of the house mouse from Tunisia, fluctuating asymmetry and character size of tooth traits were compared between chromosomal races (2n = 40, all acrocentric standard karyotype, and 2n = 22, with nine fixed Robertsonian fusions) and their natural hybrids. Developmental stability was impaired in hybrids compared to both parental groups. Because genetic divergence measured by allozyme markers was low, genomic incompatibilities were not expected between the chromosomal races. This suggests that differentiation of gene systems specifically involved in development may have occurred between the chromosomal races. Support for the latter was found in the study of character size which showed that the 2n = 22 mice had smaller teeth than either the hybrid or the standard mice. The study of Tunisian chromosomal races thus shows that chromosomal evolution may lead to important changes in coadapted gene systems without involving extensive genic differentiation.  相似文献

The central coastal region of Tunisia harbours two chromosomal races of the house mouse (2 n  = 22, 22Rb; 2 n  = 40, 40Std), which are genetically differentiated and show a high level of reproductive isolation. This study presents an allozyme analysis of house mice from the inland city of Kairouan 75 km from the coastal region. Results showed that the 22Rb and 40Std mice from Kairouan shared the same high degree of variability, and were not genetically differentiated. This contrasts with the genetic data registered for the two chromosomal races from the coastal towns, in which a particularly low genic diversity was observed in the 22Rb populations. As the two races in Kairouan show the same low hybridization rates as the populations in the coastal region, these results argue in favour of a local differentiation of the Rb race in Tunisia, most likely originating in Kairouan. The data further suggest that the decrease in variability observed in the coastal 22Rb populations is related to a founder effect or a bottleneck following the introduction of mice from Kairouan into one of these localities, prior to their dispersion throughout the coastal region.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 515–521.  相似文献

Sperm packages are widespread in the order Scorpiones, but absent in the family Buthidae. The morphology of sperm packages is diverse and apparently has phylogenetic information. The objectives of this work were to show diversity of sperm packages and to provide a quantitative basis for using sperm packages’ morphology as a taxonomic character. For this, we conducted a morphological analysis and comparison of the different sperm packages of species of the family Bothriuridae. The seminal content from males of species of Bothriuridae was studied. Specimens from Iuridae, Buthidae, Euscorpiidae, Liochelidae, Scorpionidae, Vaejovidae, Chaerilidae, and Chactidae were used for comparison. Digital images of sperm packages were measured and statistically analysed based on the following variables: total length, head width, head–body angle, total area, and head length. Pairs of variables were also contrasted, and all the variables were correlated with the current phylogenetic hypothesis for Bothriuridae. High morphological diversity and variability in measures was observed. In general, measurements were similar within each genus, but differed amongst genera. Cane‐like sperm packages are very common in species of the family Bothriuridae. Species from Bothriurus show a wide range of sperm package shapes, some of them shared with Timogenes and Vachonia species, supporting the idea of nonmonophyly of the genus. Many species showed sperm package dimorphism inside a single male. Some of the analysed features fit well with the phylogenetic hypothesis in Bothriuridae, and the general package shape shows high correlation with scorpion phylogeny in other families. Bent and round packages are the most common amongst the different families. Sperm packages are not developed in Chaerilidae, as in Buthidae. This is the first morphological and comparative analysis of sperm packages in scorpions, and reveals much greater diversity in this trait than previously known. Our results reinforce the idea that the study of morphology of sperm packages would contribute characters for scorpion phylogeny at different levels. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 161 , 463–483.  相似文献

Sperm morphology is highly diversified among species and at higher taxonomic levels. In birds, there is also increasing evidence of geographical differentiation in sperm traits within species, especially in those with strong sperm competition. Geographical divergences in sperm traits might imply the formation of a reproductive barrier in a speciation process. Here we study sperm morphology variation of willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus in a geographical context in Scandinavia, across the range of two subspecies that are differentiated in certain genetic markers, morphology and migratory routes. We describe geographical patterns in genotypes (two previously described single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and four polymorphic microsatellites); in wing length, tarsus length and body mass; and in sperm traits of 330 male willow warblers sampled at 33 localities across Norway (58°N–69°N). Birds were on average larger and longer‐winged in the north (spp. acredula) than in the south (spp. trochilus), and showed a sigmoid change in the SNP allele frequencies and body morphology around 65°N. We found no evidence of genetic structuring in the microsatellites. There was no geographical variation in sperm traits across Norway, except that sperm heads were on average longer in the south. Sperm head length was also associated with the two SNP markers, with longer sperm heads for the southern alleles, and midpiece length was weakly associated with one of the SNP markers. Similar among‐male variances in total sperm length among the 33 sampling sites indicate uniform levels of sperm competition across Norway. We conclude that sperm morphology remains a rather undifferentiated trait between the two willow warbler subspecies in Scandinavia, which is consistent with a pattern of a shallow genetic divergence. This indicates that sperm morphology is not a reproductive barrier maintaining the narrow hybrid zone.  相似文献

The karyotype of the Cretan spiny mouse Acomys minous was examined with chromosome banding techniques in 53 individuals from 12 localities of Crete, aiming to gain a more detailed knowledge on the chromosomal constitution and variability of its natural populations. We found that it consists of three Robertsonian (Rb) populations with 2n = 38, 2n = 40 and 2n = 42, respectively, the last one being reported for the first time, and with stable fundamental number (FNa = 66, FN = 68). The G‐banding pattern proves that the Rb populations are closely linked phylogenetically by the many common Rb fusions and the lack of monobrachial homologies. In addition, they appear to freely mate at their contact areas, producing viable and fertile hybrids. No other type of chromosomal rearrangement appears to have played part in the chromosomal evolution of this species, at least in the recent past, as indicated also by the study of the telomeric sequences. Heterochromatin appears to be restricted to the pericentromeric position of all acrocentric and most biarmed autosomes, as well as of the X chromosome, whereas the Y chromosome is uniformly, yet faintly heterochromatic. Chromosome banding comparison of the karyotypes in A. minous with those of the other species in the cahirinus group (i.e. Acomys cahirinus, Acomys cilicicus, and Acomys nesiotes) proves their very close phylogenetic relationship, further reinforced by the study of the cytochrome b sequences, and that A. minous possesses the ancestral karyotype of the group. It is suggested that at least two of the karyotypes that characterize A. minous today, pre‐existed in North Africa before it colonized Crete and that the specific status of the four members in the cahirinus group may need to be revisited. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 498–509.  相似文献

The West European house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, is a particularly suitable model to investigate the role of chromosomal rearrangements in reproductive isolation. In fact, it exhibits a broad range of chromosomal polymorphism due to Robertsonian (Rb) fusions leading to various types of contact zones between different chromosomal races. In the present study, we analyzed a parapatric contact in central Italy between the Cittaducale chromosomal race (CD: 2n= 22) and the surrounding populations with standard karyotype (2n= 40) to understand if Rb fusions play a causative role in speciation. One hundred forty‐seven mice from 17 localities were genotyped by means of 12 microsatellite loci. A telomeric and a pericentromeric locus situated on six chromosome arms (four Rbs and one telocentric) were selected to detect differences in the amount of gene flow for each locus in different chromosomal positions. The analyses performed on the two subsets of loci show differences in the level of gene flow, which is more restricted near the centromeres of Rb chromosomes. This effect is less pronounced in the homozygotes populations settled at the border of the hybrid zone. We discuss the possible cause of the differential porosity of gene flow in Rbs considering “hybrid dysfunctions” and “suppressed recombination” models.  相似文献

The modern theories of sexual selection predict that male sexual ornaments may have evolved as reliable signals of male fertilization efficiency. However, among the studies of fishes with external fertilization, the results have yielded ambiguous evidence. In the present study, we present data on the phenotypic relationships between red spawning coloration and ejaculate quality (spermatocrit, sperm motility) from Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus. We studied two generations (F1 and F2) of males from a large lake population, reared in a standardized hatchery environment, to determine whether differential hatchery history, or duration of hatchery selection, affected the variation in ejaculate characteristics or abdominal coloration. After controlling for body length, there was no difference between the hatchery generations in these traits. However, the degree of redness increased with fish size. We found a positive correlation between sperm velocity and sperm longevity, indicating a functional integration between these sperm features across generations. Sperm velocity was also positively correlated with male redness. Therefore, the finding obtained in the present study suggests that the carotenoid‐based ornamentation in Arctic charr may provide information about differences between males in their fertilization potential. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 794–802.  相似文献

One of the simplest models of chromosomal speciation is speciation by monobrachial centric fusion. This model is based on the assumption that a sterility barrier can develop between populations, in which fixed centric fusions show monobrachial homology, i.e. share only one chromosome arm. However, studies aimed at delineating intermediate stages of transition to reproductive isolation are lacking. In this paper, we describe a new area of chromosomal polymorphism in the house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus Schwarz and Schwarx, 1943, in Sicily (Italy). We trapped 79 mice at eighteen localities in an area of approximately 500 Km2 surrounding the largest active European volcano, Mount Etna. Combining G‐banding and chromosome painting we identified twelve different Robertsonian (Rb) metacentrics. Considering the high number of Rb fusions, some of them shared with other documented areas, the presently studied area of chromosomal polymorphism is very likely to represent a mixture of allochthonous and autochthonous Rb fusions. The Rb(9.16) is the most widespread metacentric (overall frequency 0.80). Two Rb metacentrics, Rb(4.10) and Rb(5.6), have similar overall frequency, 0.29 and 0.37, respectively, and are narrowly co‐distributed in ten populations. Nine fusions – Rb(2.13), Rb(1.3), Rb(12.17), Rb(8.17), Rb(2.14), Rb(10.14), Rb(11.17), Rb(3.15), and Rb(11.14) – show a low frequency (0.04–0.01) and mostly non‐overlapping localization, but each of them shares monobrachial homology with at least one other metacentric. The overall geographical distribution of different Rb fusions seems to match an early stage of race formation. The eventual role of the presently studied hybrid zone in the context of chromosomal speciation by monobrachial centric fusions is discussed. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 722–731.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels were assessed within the Barcelona Robertsonian polymorphic zone of Mus musculus domesticus as a measure of developmental instability (DI). This zone is characterized by populations with a reduced diploid number (2n = 27–39) surrounded by others with standard karyotype (2n = 40). Mice were distributed into four classes according to mean diploid number at each collecting site, and differences in their FA levels were studied. Three different FA indices were calculated on interlandmark distances from two major morphogenetic units of the mandible: the teeth and muscular areas. Three kinds of analysis were performed: trait‐by‐trait, considering the two regions separately and pooling all traits. In univariate analyses few differences were detected between classes. Nevertheless, when characters were pooled, differences in FA values were found between one Robertsonian group and standard mice, and between several Robertsonian classes. Teeth area traits showed higher FA levels in Rb I mice, i.e. those geographically close to the standard populations. However, FA levels decreased in more introgressed Robertsonian groups and showed significant differences with Rb I. Muscular area traits showed lower DI levels in the Robertsonian mice, especially those with an intermediate mean diploid number (Rb II). When all traits were pooled, FA levels increased in Rb I, whilst the other Robertsonian groups showed similar, or even lower, FA values to those of the standard mice. The higher FA levels found in Rb I suggest an increase in the disruption of genetic coadaptation. Furthermore, in Rb I the presence of metacentrics is more recent than in more introgressed populations; we therefore suggest that Rb I have had less time to restore genetic coadaptation. In addition, the teeth region of the mandible seems to be more sensitive to genomic stress than the muscular region. In the light of these results we suggest that hybrids should be separated into groups and that mandible morphogenetic units be differentiated when using FA in hybrid zones to analyse DI.  相似文献

This work aims to give the first comprehensive morphometric analysis of intraspecific variation for the different populations of the western house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus), in the Robertsonian (Rb) system of the N-NW Peloponnisos. Furthermore, we study all-acrocentric karyotype populations (2n = 40) of the species coming from several localities of Greece. We apply 2D shape analysis, i.e. landmark analysis and Elliptic Fourier Analysis, on the dorsal and ventral side of skull and the occlusal view of the first upper molar (M1), respectively. Although significant genetic divergence between typical and Rb populations and even ongoing speciation processes have been reported for this species, this was not the case for the Greek populations studied. However, our analyses herein reveal morphologically differentiated chromosome groups in N-NW Peloponnisos Rb system and a clear geographical discrimination of the all-acrocentric (2n = 40) populations for all characters studied. We suggest that in all-acrocentric (2n = 40) karyotype mice the geographical distance drives their differentiation while within the Rb system of N-NW Peloponnisos, karyotype is the key factor that acts on their phenotypic variation.  相似文献

Two chromosomal races of the house mouse occur in Tunisia, a standard morph (40St) found all over the country, and a derived morph (22Rb) occurring only in central Tunisia. In this region, habitat partitioning between the two morphs was investigated by a microgeographical analysis of their distribution, assessing habitat characteristics and demographic parameters. Results showed that the 22Rb mice always occurred in the oldest sections of towns (medinas), often extending to more recent surrounding neighbourhoods where the 40St morph was most abundant. The latter was never trapped within the medinas. The transition between the two morphs was located within cities in the more recent areas, the hybrid zone being estimated at less than 0.5 km in width by a clinal analysis of chromosomal data. Although differences between habitats exist, almost no demographic differences were found between populations of the two morphs when they occurred in the same or in different habitats. Two hypotheses are discussed to account for the origin of habitat partitioning. The first relies on competitive exclusion of the 40St mice from the medinas by the derived 22Rb mice; the second is based on stochastic processes related to historical evolution of Tunisian urban communities.  相似文献

Sperm morphology is highly diversified across the animal kingdom and recent comparative evidence from passerine birds suggests that postcopulatory sexual selection is a significant driver of sperm evolution. In the present study, we describe sperm size variation among 20 species of African greenbuls and one bulbul (Passeriformes: Pycnonotidae) and analyze the evolutionary differentiation of sperm size within a phylogenetic framework. We found significant interspecific variation in sperm size; with some genera exhibiting relatively long sperm (e.g. Eurillas) and others exhibiting short sperm head lengths (e.g. Phyllastrephus). However, our results suggest that contemporary levels of sperm competition are unlikely to explain sperm diversification within this clade: the coefficients of inter‐male variation (CVbm) in sperm length were generally high, suggesting relatively low and homogeneous rates of extra‐pair paternity. Finally, in a comparison of six evolutionary or tree transformation models, we found support for both the Kappa (evolutionary change primarily at nodes) and Lambda (lineage‐specific evolutionary rates along branches) models in the evolutionary trajectories of sperm size among species. We therefore conclude that African greenbuls have more variable rates of sperm size evolution than expected from a neutral model of genetic drift. Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of sperm diversification remains a future challenge.  相似文献

The study of intraspecific variation of acoustic signals and its relationship with genetic divergence is important for understanding the origin of divergence in communication systems. We studied geographical variation in the acoustic structure of advertisement calls from five populations of the four‐eyed frog, Pleurodema thaul, and its relationship with the genetic divergence among these populations. By analyzing temporal and spectral parameters of the advertisement calls, we report that the signals of northern, central, and southern populations have remarkable differences between them. A phylogeographical analysis from a mitochondrial DNA fragment demonstrated three phylogenetic groups coincident with those found with the bioacoustics analysis. Furthermore, bioacoustic and genetic distances show significant correlations after controlling for geographical distance. These results suggest that behavioural divergence among populations of P. thaul has a phylogenetic basis, supporting three evolutionary units within this species, as well as prompting the exploration of divergence processes in the sound communication system of this species. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 142–155.  相似文献

Asexual lineages derived from dioecious taxa are typically assumed to be all female. Even so, asexual females from a variety of animal taxa occasionally produce males. The existence of these males sets the stage for potential gene flow across asexual lineages as well as between sexual and asexual lineages. A recent study showed that asexual triploid female Potamopyrgus antipodarum, a New Zealand freshwater snail often used as a model to study sexual reproduction, occasionally produce triploid male offspring. Here, we show that these triploid male P. antipodarum (1) have testes that produce morphologically normal sperm, (2) make larger sperm cells that contain more nuclear DNA than the sperm produced by diploid sexual males, and (3) produce sperm that range in DNA content from haploid to diploid, and are often aneuploid. Analysis of meiotic chromosomes of triploid males showed that aberrant pairing during prophase I probably accounts for the high variation in DNA content among sperm. These results indicate that triploid male P. antipodarum produce sperm, but the extent to which these sperm are able to fertilize female ova remains unclear. Our results also suggest that the general assumption of sterility in triploid males should be more closely examined in other species in which such males are occasionally produced. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 227–234.  相似文献
