Studies on fish behavioural and neurophysiological responses to water temperature change may contribute to an improved understanding of the ecological consequences of global warming. We investigated behavioural and neurochemical responses to water temperature in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) acclimated to three temperatures (18, 22 and 28°C). After 21 d of acclimation, three groups of 25 fish each were exposed to four behavioural challenges (foraging, olfactory, aversive and mirror tests). The expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was then analysed by Western blotting in CNS homogenates (from a subset of the same fish) as a marker for cholinergic system activity. In both foraging and olfactory tests, fish acclimated to 28°C exhibited significantly higher arousal responses than fish acclimated to lower temperatures. All specimens showed fright behaviour in the aversive test, but the latency of the escape response was significantly less in the fish at 28°C. Finally, the highest mirror responsiveness was exhibited by the fish acclimated to 22°C. As in the case of cholinergic neurotransmission, significantly higher ChAT levels were detected in the telencephalon, diencephalon, cerebellum and spinal cord of fish acclimated to 22 or 28°C in comparison with those maintained at 18°C. Lower ChAT levels were detected in the mesencephalon (optic tectum) at 22 and 28°C than at 18°C. These data indicate that neuronal functions are affected by water temperature. Increases or decreases in ChAT expression can be related to the functional modulation of brain and spinal cord centres involved in behavioural responses to temperature change. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the environmental temperature level influences behaviour and CNS neurochemistry in the European sea bass.  相似文献

The effect of water temperature on growth responses of three common seagrass fish species that co‐occur as juveniles in the estuaries in Sydney (34° S) but have differing latitudinal ranges was measured: Pelates sexlineatus (subtropical to warm temperate: 27–35° S), Centropogon australis (primarily subtropical to warm temperate: 24–37° S) and Acanthaluteres spilomelanurus (warm to cool temperate: below 32° S). Replicate individuals of each species were acclimated over a 7 day period in one of three temperature treatments (control: 22° C, low: 18° C and high: 26° C) and their somatic growth was assessed within treatments over 10 days. Growth of all three species was affected by water temperature, with the highest growth of both northern species (P. sexlineatus and C. australis) at 22 and 26° C, whereas growth of the southern ranging species (A. spilomelanurus) was reduced at temperatures higher than 18° C, suggesting that predicted increase in estuarine water temperatures through climate change may change relative performance of seagrass fish assemblages.  相似文献

The critical thermal maxima (TMAX) of threadfin shad Dorosoma petenense exposed to standardized stress (30 s handling in a dip‐net), simulating stressors endured during fish loading before transport, were measured over a range of holding temperatures (15, 20 and 25° C). Dorosoma petenense TMAX showed a significant thermal effect, displaying mean ±s.d . critical thermal maxima of 26·5 ± 1·6, 30·9 ± 1·2 and 33·3 ± 1·4° C, when tested at temperatures of 15, 20 and 25° C, respectively. Dorosoma petenense TMAX levels were also affected by stress, with handled fish showing significantly lower values than control fish exposed to 15 (mean ±s.d . TMAX = 25·6 ± 2·0° C), 20 (27·6 ± 2·8° C) and 25° C (32·0 ± 2·6° C). In addition to providing basic information on D. petenense thermal tolerance, experimental results suggest that fishery managers should consider the whole suite of potential stressors, such as air exposure during handling and fish loading, when developing management criteria.  相似文献

In an effort to explore the thermal limitations of Colorado River cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus, the critical thermal maxima (Tcmax) of 1+ year Lake Nanita strain O. c. pleuriticus were evaluated when acclimated to 10, 15 and 20° C. The mean ±s.d. Tcmax for O. c. pleuriticus acclimated to 10° C was 24·6 ± 2·0°C (n = 30), for 15° C‐acclimated fish was 26·9 ± 1·5° C (n = 23) and for 20° C‐acclimated fish was 29·4 ± 1·1° C (n = 28); these results showed a marked thermal acclimation effect (Q10 = 1·20). Interestingly, there was a size effect within treatments, wherein the Tcmax of larger fish was significantly lower than that of smaller fish acclimated to the same temperature. The critical thermal tolerances of age 0 year O. c. pleuriticus were also evaluated from three separate populations: Lake Nanita, Trapper Creek and Carr Creek reared under ‘common‐garden’ conditions prior to thermal acclimation. The Trapper Creek population had significantly warmer Tcmax than the Lake Nanita population, but that of the Carr Creek fish had Tcmax similar to both Trapper Creek and Lake Nanita fish. A comparison of these O. c. pleuriticus Tcmax results with those of other stream‐dwelling salmonids suggested that O. c. pleuriticus are less resistant to rapid thermal fluctuations when acclimated to cold temperatures, but can tolerate similar temperatures when acclimated to warmer temperatures.  相似文献

Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT, E.C.2.3.1.6) catalyzes the synthesis of acetylcholine, and is considered to be a phenotypic marker specific for cholinergic neurons. In situ hybridization using a nonradioactive cRNA probe identified a large number of cell bodies expressing ChAT mRNA in the cortices of wild-type Drosophila melanogaster brain. Strong labeling is remarkable in the cortical regions associated with the lamina and antennal lobe, and also in the median neurosecretory (MNS) cells within pars intercerebralis, suggesting that some of the lamina monopolar neurons, antennal interneurons, and MNS cells are cholinergic. In two temperature-sensitive mutant alleles, Chats1 and Chats2, most hybridization signal disappears after exposure to a restrictive temperature (30°C). Loss of signal is especially evident in the optic lobes. Some centrally located neurons, however, continue to express ChAT mRNA and are thus likely to have expression controlled in a different way than the majority of cholinergic neurons. Immunocytochemistry, using a ChAT specific monoclonal antibody, identified two sets of paired neurons located in the posterior cortex of the brain. These neurons persist in ChAT immunoreactivity even in the Chats mutants exposed to restrictive temperature. ChAT mRNA is also detectable in the corresponding cell bodies when Chats mutants are held at restrictive temperature. Our findings demonstrate some specific cholinergic neurons in Drosophila brain, and indicate that ChAT expression is differentially regulated in particular sets of cholinergic neurons. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Water temperature is known to be a particularly important environmental factor that affects fish swimming performance, but it is unknow how acute temperature changes affect the fish performance of Ptychobarbus kaznakovi. P. kaznakovi in the Lancang River have declined quickly in recent years, and this species was used to examine the effects of acute temperature changes on swimming abilities and oxygen consumption in a Brett‐type swimming tunnel respirometer. The standard metabolic rate (SMR) and routine metabolic rate (RMR) showed 216% and 134% increases, respectively, at 22°C (an acute increase from 17 to 22°C) compared to those at 12°C (an acute decrease from 17 to 12°C). Moreover, the RMR was approximately 1.7, 1.6 and 1.3 times the value of the SMR at 12°C, 17°C and 22°C, respectively. The critical swimming speed (Ucrit) of P. kaznakovi at 22°C was 5.45 ± 0.45BL/S, which was 45% higher than that at 12°C (3.77 ± 0.92BL/S). The oxygen consumption rates (MO2) reached their maximum values at swimming speeds near the Ucrit for all the temperature treatments. The maximum metabolic rate (MMR) values at 12°C, 17°C and 22°C were 274.53 ± 142.60 (mgO2 kg?1 hr?1), 412.85 ± 216.34 (mgO2 kg?1 hr?1) and 1,095.73 ± 52.50 (mgO2 kg?1 hr?1), respectively. Moreover, there was a narrow aerobic scope at 12°C compared to that at 17°C and 22°C. The effect of acute temperature changes on the swimming abilities and oxygen consumption of P. kaznakovi indicated that water temperature changes caused by dam construction could directly affect energy consumption during the upstream migration of fish.  相似文献

Abstract Mummified pistachios containing fully grown diapause larvae of Eurytoma plotnikovi Nikol'skaya (Hym., Eurytomidae) were collected in early August and late September in coastal northern Greece and subjected to various photoperiod and temperature treatments, then maintained at 19 or 26°C and a long-day (LD 16:8 h), a changing, or a short-day (LD 10:14 h) photoperiod until pupation. In larvae of early August (beginning of diapause) subjected for 20 weeks to 19°C under a long, a changing, or a short photophase, followed by 19°C and a long photophase, 50% of the larvae pupated after 24, 18 and 13 weeks respectively. After exposure for 20 or even 12 weeks to a short photophase and low temperatures (10 or 4°C), pupation occurred after only 7–8 weeks and was more synchronous. The ranges of temperature for diapause development and post-diapause morphogenesis overlap. After exposure for 12 weeks to short days and low temperature, larvae of late September pupated much sooner under long days than under short days and sooner at 26° than at 19°C. E.plotnikovi depends on both temperature and photoperiod for diapause development, low temperature having a strong favourable effect on the earlier part and long day on the later part of diapause. In a few larvae of another pistachio seed wasp, Megastigmus pistaciae Walker, after a long enough period of low temperatures, diapause was terminated normally at 26°C and long days, or at 19°C and long or short days.  相似文献

Abstract With recent climate warming trends, both the increase in thermal variance (i.e., diurnal temperature range; DTR) as well as increased mean temperature may impact many different organisms, especially poikilothermic invertebrates. Predictions of insect developmental rates using degree‐days (thermal unit accumulations above the developmental base threshold of the insect) are based on daily mean temperatures, regardless of DTR. However, non‐linearity and variance in the means and extremes are often ignored. The role of thermal variance (e.g., daily temperature extremes and DTR) was evaluated experimentally for two swallowtail butterfly sister species using a common day/night photoperiod of 18: 6 h photo: scoto‐phase and corresponding daytime thermophase and nighttime cryophase periods of 22: 22°C (constant 22°C), 24: 16°C, and 26: 10°C (all three treatments had the same daily mean and the same degree‐day accumulations). Although developmental rates of post‐diapause pupae were largely unaffected for both species, our results show that sizes in P. canadensis females (but not males) were smaller in the treatments with more variance (26°C: 10°C) compared to constant 22°C. Such potentially significant impacts of size reduction in P. canadensis females were not observed in P. glaucus males or females under the same series of thermo‐period treatments.  相似文献

Many species of mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) are serious pests of economically important crops worldwide. We evaluated the influence of constant temperatures: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34°C on the life history and demographic parameters of Spalgis epius (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), a candidate biological control agent of various species of mealybugs. No eggs completed their development at 14 and 34°C. Egg-to-adult developmental time significantly decreased from 89.9 days at 16°C to 20.4 days at 32°C. The estimated lower temperature threshold of 10.2°C and 416.6 degree-days were required to complete egg-to-adult development. The mortality of immature stages was maximum at 16 and 32°C and minimum at 28°C. The highest lifetime fecundity was recorded at 28°C and it significantly decreased at 32°C. The longevity of adults was about three times more at 16°C than at 30 and 32°C. The net reproductive rate (R 0) significantly increased with increased temperatures up to 28°C and significantly decreased at 32°C. The mean generation time (T) significantly decreased with increased temperature up to 30°C, but it significantly increased at 32°C. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r m ) was highest at 30°C. The finite rate of increase (λ) was significantly greater at 30°C than at other temperatures. These data suggest that S. epius can develop, reproduce and survive in a wide range of temperatures and thus could be regarded a potential biological control agent of mealybugs.  相似文献

Behavioural correlations are at the heart of understanding how conflicting demands shape the evolution of ecologically important behaviours. Many studies have focused on the effects of negative behavioural correlations generated by time budget conflicts within situations. We examined an alternative possibility that involves positive behavioural correlations due to behavioural carryovers across situations. Specifically, we examined the role of behavioural carryovers in governing antipredator responses of streamside salamander larvae, Ambystoma barbouri, to predatory green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus. Earlier work showed that these larvae suffer heavy sunfish predation due to high larval exposure to fish (high proportion of time spent out of refuge). Earlier work also showed that paradoxically, despite selection pressure from fish, these larvae show higher exposure in the presence of fish (poorer antipredator behaviour) than a sister species that inhabits fishless, ephemeral ponds. The standard time budget trade-off between feeding and antipredator behaviour does not appear to explain the observed antipredator behaviours. Instead, the present study shows that the relatively large proportion of time that larvae spend out of refuge (exposed) in fish pools in the daytime can be explained in part by behavioural correlations across situations. Specifically, larvae showed positive correlations among individuals in their daytime exposure in fish pools, nighttime exposure in fish pools, and exposure in fishless pools. The benefits of high exposure in fishless conditions (associated with high feeding and developmental rates) and high exposure in fish pools at night (necessary to drift out of fish pools) have apparently overridden the predation cost of being exposed in fish pools in the day. Behavioural correlations across situations might often result in ecologically important behaviours that appear maladaptive in an isolated context. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] plants were exposed to three temperature regimens during seed development to investigate the effect of temperature on the expression of eight defense-related genes and the accumulation of two fungal pathogens in inoculated seeds. In seeds prior to inoculation, either a day/night warm (34/26°C) or a cool temperature (22/18°C) relative to normal (26/22°C) resulted in altered patterns of gene expression including substantially lower expression of PR1, PR3 and PR10. After seed inoculation with Cercospora kikuchii, pathogen accumulation was lowest in seeds produced at 22/18°C in which of all defense genes, MMP2 was uniquely most highly induced. For seeds inoculated with Diaporthe phaseolorum, pathogen accumulation was lowest in seeds produced at 34/26°C in which of all defense genes, PR10 was uniquely most highly induced. Our detached seed assays clearly demonstrated that the temperature regimens we applied during seed development produced significant changes in seed defense-related gene expression both pre- and post inoculation and our findings support the hypothesis that global climate change may alter plant–pathogen interactions and thereby potentially crop productivity.  相似文献

Halophilic archaeal strains R26T and R22 were isolated from the brown alga Laminaria produced at Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. Cells from the two strains were pleomorphic rods and Gram negative, and colonies were red pigmented. Strains R26T and R22 were able to grow at 20–50°C (optimum 37°C) in 1.4–5.1 M NaCl (optimum 3.1–4.3 M) at pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum pH 8.0–8.5) and neither strain required Mg2+ for growth. Cells lyse in distilled water and the minimum NaCl concentration required to prevent cell lysis was 8% (w/v) for strain R26T and 12% (w/v) for strain R22. The major polar lipids of the two strains were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester and minor phosphatidylglycerol sulfate; glycolipids were not detected. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes and rpoB′ genes revealed that strains R26T and R22 formed a distinct clade with the closest relative, Natronoarchaeum mannanilyticum. The DNA G+C content of strains R26T and R22 was 65.8 and 66.4 mol%, respectively. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains R26T and R22 was 89%. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties suggest that the strains R26T and R22 represent a novel species in a new genus within the family Halobacteriaceae, for which the name Salinarchaeum laminariae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R26T (type strain R26T = CGMCC 1.10590T = JCM 17267T, reference strain R22 = CGMCC 1.10589).  相似文献

The evolutionary significance of sex-determining mechanisms, particularly temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) in reptiles, has remained unresolved despite extensive theoretical work. To investigate the evolutionary significance of this unusual sex-determining mechanism, I incubated eggs of the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) at a male-producing temperature (26°C), a female-producing temperature (30°C), and an intermediate temperature that produced both sexes about equally (28°C). Laboratory experiments indicated that two performance variables, but no morphological measurements, were significantly influenced by incubation temperature (P ≤ 0.05): hatchlings from cooler incubation treatments swam faster than turtles from warmer incubation treatments, and hatchlings from 28°C exhibited a greater propensity to run than did individuals from 26°C and 30°C. In the field, hatchlings from the all-male and all-female producing temperatures had significantly higher first-year survivorship than did consexuals from the incubation temperature that produced both sexes (G = 6.622, P = 0.03). Significant directional selection was detected on propensity of hatchlings to run (β′ = –0.758, P = 0.05): turtles that tended to remain immobile had a higher probability of first-year survivorship than did individuals that moved readily. Thus, the effects of the gender × incubation temperature interaction on survivorship of hatchling turtles observed in the field experiment may have been mediated by temperature-dependent antipredator behavior. These results provide a possible functional explanation for the evolutionary significance of TSD in turtles that is consistent with predictions of theoretical models.  相似文献

The successful use of the predatory bug Orius spp. (Hemiptera:Anthocoridae) for the biological control of pests, namely western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), in greenhouses during winter depends on overcoming the obstacles of short photoperiods and low temperatures which limit the efficacy of the predators through diapause induction, slowed development, reduced survival and reproduction. Thus, research has focused on determining the insect species least vulnerable to these problems. This study investigated the effect of varying day-lengths (9, 11, 13 and 16 h) at 26°C as well as constant (18, 22, 26 and 30°C) and fluctuating (10/22°C) temperatures on biological characteristics of Orius niger (Wolff). Photoperiod did not induce reproductive diapause and did not significantly affect development, survival of eggs and nymphs, longevity, fecundity or sex ratio; with the exception of the 16 h day-length which led to a shorter duration of nymphal development. Fluctuating temperatures and a constant temperature of 18°C increased the incubation period, duration of nymphal development, total developmental time, generation time and longevity, compared to the constant temperatures of 22, 26 and 30°C, but decreased fecundity compared to 22 and 26°C. On the other hand, sex ratio was not influenced by 10/22 and 18°C. Egg hatch rate and nymph survival differed significantly between temperature regimes, being lower at 18 and 10/22°C. These results suggest that O. niger would be able to survive and reproduce under winter conditions in unheated Mediterranean greenhouses and is a candidate for use in the biological control of pests.  相似文献

We investigated in this study the influence of an endophytic fungus, Paecilomyces formosus LHL10, on the thermotolerance of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) upon exposure to high (38°C) and low (8°C) temperature stresses. The results showed that endophyte-inoculated plants had significantly higher plant growth attributes under high-temperature stress. However, they were either low or insignificant in non-inoculated control and inoculated plants with 8°C treatments. Lower stress-promulgated water deficit and cellular membrane damage were observed in endophyte-treated plants after 38°C treatment than in control plants under 8°C stress. Total polyphenol, reduced glutathione, and lipid peroxidation activities were reduced in endophyte-associated plants after exposure to 38°C as compared with control and 8°C-treated plants. The concentration of saturated fatty acids (palmitic-C16:0; stearic-C18:0) was lower in endophyte-treated plants with or without low-temperature stress, but after 8°C treatment increased compared with controls. Unsaturated fatty acids (oleic-C18:1; linoleic-C18:2; linolenic-C18:3 acids) were similar at normal conditions; however, at 38°C, C18:2 and C18:3 were decreased, and C18:1 was increased in endophyte-treated plants compared with controls, while the inverse relationship was found at 8°C. Low levels of abscisic acid in P. formosus-associated plants after 38°C treatments revealed stress tolerance compared with control and 8°C-treated plants. In contrast, salicylic acid was pronounced in endophyte-treated plants after low-temperature stress as compared to other treatments. The results provide evidence that the response to P. formosus association was beneficial at normal growth temperature and had varying effects in response to temperature stress.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Oxygen consumption at 18°C was 60% of the rate at 22 and 26°C.
  • 2.2. Critical points, where the rate of oxygen consumption changed, were defined at 22°C (2.89 mg DO) and 26°C (3.46 mg DO). Linear regressions were fitted showing that oxygen consumption declined significantly (81.5% ±4.5) below the critical point.
  • 3.3. Oxygen consumption was proportional to weight. Allometric relationships resulted in variable temperature-related coefficients for respiratory dependence on weight, a reflection of the crayfish adaptation towards re-establishment of a new equilibrium state.
  • 4.4. Heart beat rate was lower at 18°C, and highest at the acclimation temperature (22°C). Stress at 26°C was evident.

This study evaluated how water temperature (26, 28, and 30°C), number of meals per day (one or two meals), and protein percent in diet (20, 25 and 30%) impact growth performance, biometric indices, and feeding behavior of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Fish were randomly allocated into 18 equal replicate groups. Higher final body weight was observed in fish reared at 30°C and fed one meal per day containing 30% crude protein. Better weight gain, weight gain %, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, and condition factor were recorded in fish reared at 26°C and fed one meal per day containing 30% protein. The best length weight relationship was obtained in fish reared at 26°C and fed one meal per day containing 30% crude protein. Shorter feeding duration and duration of appetite inhibition latency were recorded in fish reared at 30°C, fed one meal per day, and given a diet containing 30% protein. The highest proactivity was recorded in fish reared at 30°C, received one meal per day, and with 25% crude protein in their diet. Conclusively, rearing Nile tilapia at 26–30°C with a lower feeding frequency (one meal/day) and a 30% crude protein diet achieved better performance and feeding behavior.  相似文献

In this study, the hypothesis is tested that continuous increases in ambient temperature (Ta) during daytime would give elevated core and skin temperatures, and consequently better thermal sensation and comfort. Rectal temperature (Tre), skin temperatures and regional dry heat losses at 7 sites were continuously measured for 10 Japanese male subjects in three thermal conditions: cond. 1, stepwise increases in Ta from 26 °C at 9 h00 to 30 °C at 18 h00; cond. 2, steady Ta at 28 °C from 9 h00 to 18 h00 and cond. 3, stepwise decreases in Ta from 30 °C at 9 h00 to 26 °C at 18 h00. Oxygen consumption was measured and thermal sensation and comfort votes were monitored at 15 min intervals. Body weight loss was measured at 1 h intervals. While Tre increased continuously in the morning period in any condition, it increased to a significantly greater (p?<?0.05) 36.9?±?0.3 °C at 18 h00 in cond. 1 relative to 36.7?±?0.28 °C in Cond. 2 and 36.5?±?0.37 °C in cond. 3. Better thermal comfort was observed in the afternoon and the evening in Cond.1 as compared with the other 2 conditions. Thus, a progressive and appropriate increase in Ta may induce optimal cycle in core temperature during daytime, particularly for a resting person.  相似文献

For the first time, ciliates have been found to activate rather than inactivate a virus, chum salmon reovirus (CSV). Activation was seen as an increase in viral titre upon incubation of CSV at 22 °C with Tetrahymena canadenesis and two strains of T. thermophila: wild type (B1975) and a temperature conditional mutant for phagocytosis (NP1). The titre increase was not likely due to replication because CSV had no visible effects on the ciliates and no vertebrate virus has ever been shown unequivocally to replicate in ciliates. When incubated with B1975 and NP1 at 30 °C, CSV was activated only by B1975. Therefore, activation required CSV internalization because at 30 °C only B1975 exhibited phagocytosis. CSV replicated in fish cells at 18 to 26 °C but not at 30 °C. Collectively, these observations point to CSV activation being distinct from replication. Activation is attributed to the CSV capsid being modified in the ciliate phagosomal‐lysosomal system and released in a more infectious form. When allowed to swim in CSV‐infected fish cell cultures, collected, washed, and transferred to uninfected cultures, T. canadensis caused a CSV infection. Overall the results suggest that ciliates could have roles in the environmental dissemination of some fish viral diseases.  相似文献
