Colour ornamentation in animals is exceptionally diverse, but some colours may provide better signals of individual quality or more efficient visual stimuli and, thus, be more often used as sexual signals. This may depend on physiological costs, which depend on the mechanism of colour production (e.g. exogenously acquired colouration in passerine birds appears to be most sexually dichromatic). We studied sexual dichromatism in a sample of 27 Australasian parrot species with pigment- (melanin and psittacofulvin) and structural-based colouration, to test whether some of these types of colouration are more prominent in sexual ornamentation. Unlike passerines, in which long wavelength colouration (yellow to red) usually involves exogenous and costly carotenoid pigments, yellow to red colouration in parrots is based on endogenously synthesized psittacofulvin pigments. This allows us to assess whether costly exogenous pigments are necessary for these plumage colours to have a prominent role in sexual signalling. Structural blue colouration showed the largest and most consistent sexual dichromatism, both in area and perceptually relevant chromatic differences, indicating that it is often ornamental in parrots. By contrast, we found little evidence for consistent sexual dichromatism in melanin-based colouration. Unlike passerines, yellow to red colouration was not strongly sexually dichromatic: although the area of colouration was generally larger in males, colour differences between the sexes were on average imperceptible to parrots. This is consistent with the idea that the prominent yellow to red sexual dichromatism in passerines is related to the use of carotenoid pigments, rather than resulting from sensory bias for these colours. 相似文献

Body coloration is sexually dimorphic in many vertebrate species, including lizards, in which males are often more conspicuous than females. A detailed analysis of the relative size of coloured patches and their reflectance, including the ultraviolet (UV) range, has rarely been performed. In the present work we quantified sexual dimorphism in body traits and surface area of all lateral patches from adult females and males of two subspecies of Gallotia galloti (G. g. galloti and G. g. eisentrauti). We also analysed the magnitude of sexual dichromatism in the UV‐visible reflectance of such patches and the changes in patch size and brightness during the reproductive season (April–July). Males had significantly larger patch areas (relative to their snout‐vent length) and higher brightness (mainly in the UV‐blue range) than did females in both subspecies. The comparison of relative patch areas among months did not reach statistical significance. However, patch brightness significantly changed during the breeding season: that of the UV‐blue (300–495 nm) range from lizards of the two subspecies was significantly larger in June than in April, while brightness in the 495–700 nm range in G. g. galloti was larger in May, June, and July than in April. A different pattern of dichromatism was also detected in the two populations, with G. g. eisentrauti being more sexually dichromatic than G. g. galloti. We discuss the results in terms of possible evolutionary causes for the sexual dichromatism related to different ecological characteristics of the habitats where each subspecies live. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 556–569. 相似文献

The throat and belly of both sexes of the common wall lizard Podarcis muralis exhibit a polymorphic coloration with three morphs (white, yellow and red). We documented the occurrence of this polymorphism in 11 populations of northern Italy, and investigated the morphometric features of the three morphs in both sexes. The white morph was more frequent (56.6%), while yellow and red morphs accounted for 28.7 and 14.7% of the lizards, respectively. Moreover, the red morphotype was more frequent among males while the white one was more frequent among females. The occurrence of the three morphs varied microgeographically from populations with a higher proportion of white individuals to those where all morphs were more equally represented. The comparisons of morphometry between morphs did not reveal any significant difference among males, while snout–vent length and head height in females increased from the white-throated to the yellow-throated morph, and from the yellow-throated morph to the red-throated one. Possible functions of this polymorphic coloration are discussed. 相似文献

Condition-dependence is a central but contentious tenet of evolutionary theories on the maintenance of ornamental traits, and this is particularly true for structural plumage colour. By providing diets of different nutritional quality to moulting male and female blue tits, we experimentally manipulated general condition within the natural range, avoiding deprivation or stressful treatments. We measured reflectance of the structural-coloured UV/blue crown, a sexually selected trait in males, and the white cheek, a nonpigmented structural colour, directly after moult and again during the following spring mating season. We employed a variety of colour indices, based on spectral shape and avian visual models but, despite significant variation in condition and coloration, found no evidence for condition-dependence of UV/blue or white plumage colour during either season. These and previously published results suggest that structural colour might be sensitive to stress, rather than reduced body condition, during moult. 相似文献

The interplay between colour vision and animal signalling is of keen interest to behavioural ecologists and evolutionary biologists alike, but is difficult to address in terrestrial animals. Unlike most avian lineages, in which colour vision is relatively invariant among species, the fairy‐wrens and allies (Maluridae) show a recent gain of ultraviolet sensitivity (UVS). Here, we compare the rates of colour evolution on 11 patches for males and females across Maluridae in the context of their visual system. We measured reflectance spectra for 24 species, estimating five vision‐independent colour metrics as well as metrics of colour contrast among patches and sexual dichromatism in a receiver‐neutral colour space. We fit Brownian motion (BM) and Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) models to estimate evolutionary rates for these metrics and to test whether male coloration, female coloration or dichromatism was driven by selective regimes defined by visual system or geography. We found that in general male coloration evolved rapidly in comparison with females. Male colour contrast was strongly correlated with visual system and expanded greatly in UVS lineages, whereas female coloration was weakly associated with geography (Australia vs. Papua New Guinea). These results suggest that dichromatism has evolved in Maluridae as males and females evolve at different rates, and are driven by different selection pressures. 相似文献

Why do some bird species show dramatic sexual dichromatism in their plumage? Sexual selection is the most common answer to this question. However, other competing explanations mean it is unwise to assume that all sexual dichromatism has evolved by this mechanism. Even if sexual selection is involved, further work is necessary to determine whether dichromatism results from competition amongst rival males, or by female choice for attractive traits, or both. Here, we test whether sexually dichromatic hihi (Notiomystis cincta) plumage is currently under sexual selection, with detailed behavioural and genetic analyses of a free‐living island population. Bateman gradients measured for males and females reveal the potential for sexual selection, whilst selection gradients, relating reproductive success to specific colourful traits, show that there is stabilizing selection on white ear tuft length in males. By correlating colourful male plumage with different components of reproductive success, we show that properties of yellow plumage are most likely a product of male–male competition, whilst properties of the black and white plumage are an outcome of both male–male competition and female choice. Male plumage therefore potentially signals to multiple receivers (rival males and potential mates), and this may explain the multicoloured appearance of one of the most strikingly dichromatic species in New Zealand. 相似文献

Both intra- and inter-sexual selection may crucially determine a male's fitness. Their interplay, which has rarely been experimentally investigated, determines a male's optimal reproductive strategy and thus is of fundamental importance to the understanding of a male's behaviour. Here we investigated the relative importance of intra- and inter-sexual selection for male fitness in the common lizard. We investigated which male traits predict a male's access to reproduction allowing for both selective pressures and comparing it with a staged mating experiment excluding all types of intra-sexual selection. We found that qualitatively better males were more likely to reproduce and that sexual selection was two times stronger when allowing for both selective pressures, suggesting that inter- and intra-sexual selection determines male fitness and confirming the existence of multi-factorial sexual selection. Consequently, to optimize fitness, males should trade their investment between the traits, which are important for inter- and intra-sexual selection. 相似文献

Conspicuous colouration increases male reproductive success through female preferences and/or male–male competition. Despite the advantages of conspicuous colouration, inconspicuous male morphs can exist simultaneously in a population due to genetic diversity, condition dependence or developmental constraints. We are interested in explaining the male dichromatism in Xanthagrion erythroneurum damselflies. We reared these damselflies in outdoor insectaries under natural conditions and showed that this species undergoes ontogenetic colour changes. The younger males are yellow and change colour to red 6–7 days after their emergence. We took red and yellow male reflectance spectra and found that red males are brighter than yellow males. Next, we aimed to determine whether ontogenetic colour change signals sexual maturity with field observations and laboratory experiments. Our field observational data showed that red males are in higher abundance in the breeding territory, and they have a higher mating frequency than yellow males. We confirmed these field observations by enclosing a red and a yellow male with two females and found that yellow males do not mate in presence of red males. To determine whether colour change signals sexual maturity, we measured mating success of males before and after colour changes by enclosing a single male at different age (day 3-day 7) and colour (yellow, intermediate and red) with a single female in a mating cage. Males did not mate when yellow but the same male mated after it changed colour to red, suggesting the ontogenetic colour change signals sexual maturity in this species. Our study shows that male dichromatism can be age-dependent and ontogenetic colour change can signal age and sexual readiness in non-territorial insects. 相似文献

Sexual selection is often viewed as a promoter of population divergence, although some forms of sexual selection could rather hamper divergence. In the present study, we investigated whether sexual selection promotes divergence in sexually‐selected traits. We studied population variation in sexual selection in relation to colour morph and body size in islet and mainland populations of the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae). Females were most likely to mate with orange‐throated males with small body sizes, and male body size and coloration were therefore subject to correlational sexual selection. By contrast, male mating probabilities were not affected by any female phenotypic character. We also found variation in a female resistance trait (escape propensity), with females being more prone to escape when exposed to males from other habitats. Sexual selection could potentially affect the frequencies of throat colour morphs in this species by favouring orange‐throated males of small body size, although there was no evidence of sexual selection for local mates or rare phenotypes. The results obtained in the present study thus do not support a role for sexual selection as a promoter of population divergence in this species. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 374–389. 相似文献

Patterns of latitudinal variation in the phenotype or genotype of an organism may provide evidence for natural selection. In this study, we investigated seven populations of swallowtail Sericinus montelus Gray, 1798 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), a non‐migratory species, to explore the latitudinal variation of morphological characteristics in adults. The results showed that body size and the development of dark pigmentation on wings in this species responded strongly to latitude. The body size of both male and female adult of S. montelus was negatively correlated with latitude. These findings provided solid evidence to support the converse Bergmann's rule. We considered that the observed variation in morphological characteristics was most likely mediated by the seasonal length and thermoperiod to adapt to different latitudinal environment (e.g. shortened developmental time of immature stages for smaller body size at higher latitude). Moreover, the tendency towards progressively darker colour patterns (only in adult males) at increasingly low latitudes was consistent with Gloger's rule. We suggested that the observed colour variation was most likely associated with thermoregulation. Slight variation in the morphology of the W‐shaped stripe on the forewing of adult females was also found, and we presumed that the functions of sexual preferences, mimicry and thermoregulation might be involved. 相似文献

Variation within populations is a prerequisite for the action of selection on morphological traits. Darwin assumed that there was much greater variation in sexual ornament size than in body size, but this may not be generally true of natural populations. I analyse field data on variation in body size and the length, area and mass of tail ornaments in paradise (Vidua paradisaea) and shaft-tailed whydahs (V. regia). Whydahs are promiscuous, brood parasitic African finches with elaborate tail ornaments in breeding males. The short, unadorned tails of male shaft-tailed whydahs, which carry a wire-like tail ornament, are non-significantly (1%) longer than female tails, but male paradise whydahs, which carry a large, broad ornament, have unadorned tails 10% longer than those of conspecific females. Fully grown ornament length, mass and area vary little more (CVs = 1.8-6.4%) than male or female body size traits (CVs = 1.7-6.1%). Instead, there is high variation in the timing of ornament development during prenuptial moult (CVs = 30.8–39.5% for paradise whydahs and 12.6–23.8% for shaft-tailed whydahs when corrected to a standard date). This temporal variation in development probably has greater significance for sexual selection in whydahs than maximum ornament size. 相似文献

In theory, selection for effective camouflage (i.e. dull coloration) in fish should be strongest when the conditions for visual predation are most favourable, such as in structurally simple pelagic habitats. By contrast, in more sheltered (e.g. littoral) habitats, selection may favour effective intra‐specific communication (i.e. bright coloration) (at the expense of crypsis). Poor transparency, as in highly humic waters, should constrain colour adaptations. We investigated phenotypic variation in body coloration of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in littoral and pelagic habitats of four humic boreal lakes. Perch from the most transparent lake had the lightest and less coloured belly and perch were more colourful in the littoral habitats than in the pelagic areas, with the pattern being clearest in the most transparent lake. In addition, perch in the most transparent lake exhibited sexual dichromatism, with males having a more colourful belly than the females, whereas no indications of sexual dichromatism were found in more humic lakes. Moreover, in the most transparent lake, the condition of fish correlated with bright belly coloration in the littoral, but with dull belly coloration in the pelagic habitat. The results obtained in the present study suggest that selection on perch coloration may differ between lakes as a result of visual properties of the water, and within lakes as a result of divergent selection for camouflage and communication in pelagic and littoral habitats. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 47–59. 相似文献

Selection on body size in a raptor with pronounced reversed sexual size dimorphism: are bigger females better? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An overabundance of hypotheses have been proposed to accountfor reversed sexual size dimorphism (RSD; females the largersex) in raptors. Previous research principally focused on examininginterspecific patterns of RSD, rarely testing predictions ofvarious hypotheses within populations. To redress this, we useddata from both sexes of a large brown falcon, Falco berigora, population to evaluate the importance of size and body conditionindices on the hunting prowess of males and the reproductivesuccess, recruitment, and survival probabilities of both sexes.Female-female competition for territorial vacancies was likelyto be intense as the floating population was female-biased andintrasexual agonistic interactions were frequently observed. In this competitive population, larger adult females were morelikely to be recruited, indicating directional selection favoringincreased female body size. Furthermore, after recruitment largerfemales were more likely to successfully fledge offspring, providinga mechanism by which RSD is maintained in the population. Incontrast, male recruitment was unrelated to either body sizeor condition indices. Smaller immature males more often heldtheir territories (survived) over two breeding seasons thandid their larger counterparts; however, they also took smallprey more frequently, a diet related to poor reproductive success. We argue that, together, these results are indicative of selectionfavoring an increase in female body size and a reduction ormaintenance in male body size. Of all the hypotheses proposedto account for the maintenance and evolution of RSD in raptors, this scenario is consistent only with the predictions of theintrasexual competition hypothesis. 相似文献

Intraspecific variation in ejaculate traits of the northern watersnake (Nerodia sipedon) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of more than one male compete to fertilize the eggs of a female. In reptiles, sperm competition is particularly prevalent and is an important agent of sexual selection in males. Spermatogenesis in reptiles can be energetically expensive, suggesting that there may be costs to producing high-quality ejaculates. The northern watersnake Nerodia sipedon has a mating system characterized by aggregations in which a single female mates with multiple males, resulting in high levels of multiple paternities. Under these circumstances sperm competition is likely important, and selection should favour sperm and ejaculate traits that enhance a male's reproductive success. In this study, we examined intraspecific variation in ejaculate quality (sperm length, motility, sperm density, spermactocrit) in male watersnakes and determined whether ejaculate traits varied with body size and condition, using both size-corrected mass and haematocrit as indices of condition. We found large variation among males in all these traits, except for sperm length. Although there was significant variation in sperm length among males, the majority of variation in sperm length occurred within rather than among individuals. Males with high haematocrit had sperm that were less variable with respect to length, and large males produced ejaculates that were less concentrated with respect to sperm than small males. The lack of condition dependence of most ejaculate traits is consistent with previous studies that indicate that male reproductive effort in this species is generally not energy limited, perhaps because of opportunistic foraging during the mating season. 相似文献

Permanent female mimicry, in which adult males express a female phenotype, is known only from two bird species. A likely benefit of female mimicry is reduced intrasexual competition, allowing female-like males to access breeding resources while avoiding costly fights with typical territorial males. We tested this hypothesis in a population of marsh harriers Circus aeruginosus in which approximately 40 per cent of sexually mature males exhibit a permanent, i.e. lifelong, female plumage phenotype. Using simulated territorial intrusions, we measured aggressive responses of breeding males towards conspecific decoys of females, female-like males and typical males. We show that aggressive responses varied with both the type of decoys and the type of defending male. Typical males were aggressive towards typical male decoys more than they were towards female-like male decoys; female-like male decoys were attacked at a rate similar to that of female decoys. By contrast, female-like males tolerated male decoys (both typical and female-like) and directed their aggression towards female decoys. Thus, agonistic responses were intrasexual in typical males but intersexual in female-like males, indicating that the latter not only look like females but also behave like them when defending breeding resources. When intrasexual aggression is high, permanent female mimicry is arguably adaptive and could be seen as a permanent 'non-aggression pact' with other males. 相似文献

Sperm competition studies typically identify copulation duration as an important predictor of paternity as it may determine the quantity of sperm transferred and thus paternity success. This study explores the relationship between copulation duration, male body size, male age and sperm transfer in the golden orb‐weaving spider, Nephila edulis. Paternity in this species is strongly associated with the relative frequency and duration of copulation, which is also influenced by male size. We determined the number of sperm transferred during copulation, by performing sperm counts in both the male copulatory organs (palps) and female sperm receptacle (spermatheca) of recently mated pairs. The total number of sperm recorded (the sum in the male palps and female spermathecae) was greater for younger males than older males, but did not vary with male body size. In general, younger males transferred more sperm and a greater proportion of their sperm supplies than older males and, among these younger males, larger individuals transferred more sperm. However, there were no significant size effects for older males. More sperm was transferred with longer copulations, but in contrast with previous studies, we found that larger males copulated for longer. The rate of sperm transferred was negatively correlated with the duration of copulation, suggesting that the variation in copulation duration in N. edulis may represent strategic investment by males to alter patterns of paternity, in addition to transferring additional sperm. 相似文献
