Ungava Bay is ice covered 6–7 months of the year and evidence of ice scouring of seaweeds is extensive in the intertidal and
shallow subtidal. Maximum tidal amplitudes of 16 m, among the highest in Canadian waters, compound this impact. Despite this
level of annual perturbation, very extensive and dense beds of fucoids in the intertidal and laminarians in the subtidal are
common on the western shores of Ungava Bay. Ground surveys of 24 intertidal stations combined with satellite images delineated
82,000 tons standing crop of Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus evanescens in Payne Bay, of which 36,000 tons were considered harvestable. Subtidally, kelp cover reached peak biomass at 5–10 m consisting
of three primary species, Saccharina longicruris, Laminaria digitata, and Laminaria solidungula. In the area of Payne Bay, kelp beds of 100 ha were common, averaging 9–12 kg m−2 wet weight. The productivity of brown algae at these latitudes has been assumed to be low relative to southern latitudes.
Direct measurement of lineal growth indicates productivity is intermediate between arctic and temperate populations. The potential
for medium level industrial harvest exists under conservative management strategies within the constraints of subarctic logistics. 相似文献

Western Prince Edward Island Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) has been intensively dragraked since 1966. As well, most unattached fronds removed by wave surge, ice, etc. are brought to shore by waves and currents, where they are harvested eagerly. Accurate annual fishing yields were recorded between 1966 and 1981 inclusive. Given that herbivore densities are reduced, likely due to the intensive raking, and that mean annual bycatch (non-Irish moss seaweeds) (23.4 %) and commercial bed sizes (873 ha) were known, the fishing yields thus were considered a unique database from which to calculate net primary production (NPP). Factors used to convert from wet to dry wt (DW), and from dry wt to carbon were 0.22 an 0.31, respectively. Calculated mean annual NPP values were as follows: 2.101 ± 0.654 t (DW) ha–1 y–1; 210.1 g DW m–2 yr–1 and 63.0 g C m–2 yr–1. These values are much lower than those calculated for northwest Atlantic kelp and rockweed but similar to that determined for northeast Atlantic Gracilaria verrucosa. The interannual variability pattern for NPP was similar for both the wild Irish moss harvest and that of experimental Chondrus crispus outplants placed in one of the 14 commercial beds. 相似文献

The term seaweed industry is employed in a broad sense and includes production both of commercial seaweeds such as Laminaria and Porphyra by phycoculture and of processed seaweed products, such as algin, agar and carrageenan. Before the founding of the People's Republic, China had a very insignificant seaweed industry, producing small quantities of the purple laver Porphyra and the glueweed Gloiopeltis by the primitive rock-cleaning method and the kelps Laminaria and Undaria by the primitive stone-throwing method, both aiming at enhancing the growth of the wild seaweeds. Also, a small quantity of agar was manufactured by the traditional Japanese method of gelling, freezing, thawing and drying the product. The small production was not sufficient to meet the demand of the Chinese people who for ages have appreciated seaweeds and their products for food. Therefore, large quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products had to be imported from various countries, for instance, Eucheuma and Gracilaria from Indonesia and other southeastern Asian countries, Laminaria and agar from Japan, even Porphyra from the USA. Annual Laminaria import from Japan generally amounted to over 10 000 tons and in some years approached 20 000–30 000 tons. Some quantities of the glueweed Gloiopeltis and the vermifuge weed Digenea simplex were exported, mainly to Japan.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in October, 1949, China has exerted efforts to build up a self-supporting seaweed industry. Now after a lapse of 30-some years, a sizable seaweed industry has been developed. China is now able to produce by phycoculture more than one million tons of fresh seaweeds, including Laminaria, Undaria, Porphyra, Eucheuma, Gracilaria etc. and several thousand tons of seaweed extracts, including algin, agar, carrageenan, mannitol and iodine. At present, China still imports some quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products from various countries but is able to produce sufficient quantities to meet the people's need and even to export some quantities of the seaweeds Laminaria, Undaria and Porphyra and the seaweed products algin and mannitol. At the Tenth International Seaweed Symposium, I presented a paper on the Marine Phycoculture of China, in which I emphasized on the methods of cultivation (Tseng 1981b). Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to supplement the last lecture by presenting a paper on the role of phycological research in the development of China's seaweed industry. 相似文献

Exploitation of the commercially-important species of Gelidium in Spain (G. sesquipedale and G. latifolium) and development of the industry occurred after World War II, as a consequence of their use as resources for the extraction of agar. This resulted in the implementation of several harvesting methods, the most important of which is the gathering of cast seaweeds, both from the shore and the sea. From the very beginning, direct exploitation of these species (i.e. plucking) was controversial because of possible adverse ecological effects. Consequently, several biological and ecological studies of both species of Gelidium were begun. This included such aspects as growth, biomass production, productivity, reproduction, regeneration capacity and agar yield. Recently, the growing interest in using and conserving this resource has led to increased knowledge of the biology and ecology of these species. In this paper, we provide an overview of the research carried out by different Spanish groups and suggest guidelines for rational management of these resources. 相似文献

Carrageenan analyses were conducted on vegetative female clones of Chondrus crispus that were cultured to provide tissues with differing growth rates. Tissue dry weights increased from apex to base of fronds. Total carrageenan contents were lower in apical 1 to 2 cm segments than elsewhere in the frond, except when the alga was grown at high photon irradiances. Clone 373A contained more carrageenan than clone G8. The proportion of 0.3 M KCl-soluble polymers in the total native carrageenans varied from 44 to 92%, being highest in older tissues of fronds cultured at high photon irradiances. The apical 1 cm segments contained less KCl-soluble carrageenans than other tissues from the corresponding fronds. The KCl-soluble carrageenans, when alkali-modified and refractionated, afforded the expected kappa-iota carrageenan in > 79% yields. The remainder consisted of a polymer containing 23.1% SO3Na and 8.4% 3,6-anhydrogalactose. Lambda carrageenan was not detected. Variations in carrageenan distribution between the apical region and other parts of the frond may reflect the increasing influence of medullary tissue developed as the immature cells differentiate. 相似文献

Two species of Gelidium, provisionally referred to as G. pusillum and G. latifolium, are included in the Scandinavian flora and reach their northern limit of distribution on the Norwegian west coast. Small frond sizes due to adverse growth conditions, extreme phenotypic variability and lack of sexual reproduction make identification of specimens very difficult. Both species were isolated into unialgal culture and were compared with cultured strains referable to G. pusillum from Ireland and France. Temperature and salinity requirements and tolerance ranges were determined and discussed in view of distribution along the Norwegian coast. Little or no growth occurs below 9 °C, corresponding to a northern summer growth limit. On the Norwegian Skagerrak coast, low winter temperature rather than reduced salinity is the limiting factor. 相似文献

The success of introduced species is often attributed to release from co-evolved enemies in the new range and a subsequent decreased allocation to defense (EICA), but these hypotheses have rarely been evaluated for systems with low host-specificity of enemies. Here, we compare herbivore utilization of the brown seaweed, Fucus
evanescens, and its coexisting competitors both in its native and new ranges, to test certain predictions derived from these hypotheses in a system dominated by generalist herbivores. While F. evanescens was shown to be a preferred host in its native range, invading populations supported a less diverse herbivore fauna and it was less preferred in laboratory choice experiments with important herbivores, when compared to co-occurring seaweeds. These results are consistent with the enemy release hypothesis, despite the fact that the herbivore communities in both regions were mainly composed of generalist species. However, in contrast to the prediction of EICA, analysis of anti-grazing compounds indicated a higher allocation to defense in introduced compared to native F.
evanescens. The results suggest that the invader is subjected to less intense enemy control in the new range, but that this is due to an increased allocation to defense rather than release from specialized herbivores. This indicates that increased resistance to herbivory might be an important strategy for invasion success in systems dominated by generalist herbivores. 相似文献

An overview of seaweed resources in Chile 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The seaweed harvest in Chile has doubled during the past decade, and export values have increased by 300% because of diversification
and increase in the volume of products with greater value added. The export value of seaweed products increased from US $18
million in 1980 to $52 million in 1991. During the past decade, the successful cultivation of Gracilaria was implemented, and this has compensated for the large decrease in yields from natural beds. In the short term, it will
be necessary to develop techniques for the cultivation of other resources such as Iridaea, Gigartina, Lessonia and Gelidium. Alternative biotechnological methods must also be developed, such as the use of Gracilaria strains with increased quality and production for growth in cultivation centers. 相似文献

High levels of phenotypic variation in kelp species necessitate the use of taxonomic markers that are independent of morphology. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of nuclear DNA can provide such markers. In this paper we present the results of an RFLP analysis of cytoplasmic ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in three Laminaria species (L. agardhii, L. digitata, L. groenlandica). Comparison of the restriction maps of the nontranscribed spacer (NTS) in the rDNAs suggests that this method should be useful for the differentiation of these taxa. These results are discussed, as are the applications of RFLP mapping to the identification of field-collected, morphologically variable plants. 相似文献

Agar, floridean starch, protein, ash and water content in Gelidium latifolium from nature were followed monthly over one year. Comparison of variations in these contents, algal growth and cytological observations enable us to establish a cycle for agar synthesis. In autumn, after reproduction of alga, there is an active algal growth period with agar synthesis and utilization of floridean starch. In winter, synthesis is shifted toward protein accumulation while there is a partial agar hydrolysis. In spring another active growth period of the alga occurs with accumulation of floridean starch and synthesis of agar. In summer and during reproduction, there is a depletion of thalli nitrogen content while the agar synthesis pauses. 相似文献

A model of seaweed growth in an outdoor culture in Israel 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The agarophyte red seaweed Gracilaria conferta was used as a model plant to study the relationship between growth and environmental factors. This species was cultured in small outdoor tanks with continuous seawater supply during three years. Seaweeds were kept under constant density by weekly thinning and were also pulse-fed weekly with nitrogen and phosphate. Water temperature and underwater irradiance increase had opposite effects on the weekly growth rate in two seasons: negative in summer and positive in non-summer. Therefore, a dichotomic separation between summer (June–August) and non-summer (September–May) seasons was utilized in the proposed linear model. The linear model, of the analysis of covariance type, accounted for an explained percentage of total variation (R2) of 0.567, with significant coefficients of all variables included. A standardized model showed that season was the dominant variable, with its coefficient being twice that of temperature in summer, and zero in the non-summer season. Water temperature affected the growth rate twice as much as irradiance, and epiphytes showed a significant negative effect on growth only in the summer. This model aids in the prediction of growth on a seasonal basis under local conditions. 相似文献

Field observations in sublittoral Prince Edward Island, Canada, indicated that on a friable sandstone substratum Chondrus crispus was more commonly associated with Phymatolithon sp. than with bare rock. Thus, a substantial proportion of the population of Irish moss along the coast of Prince Edward Island occurs on this encrusting coralline. These observation may be explained on the basis of the relative stability of the substratum in contrast to other studies in which sloughing of epithallial cells by species of both Phymatolithon and Lithothamnium has been reported to limit epiphytism by fleshy macrophytes.Issued as NRCC 31426. 相似文献

In the last fourteen years the production of seaweeds in Chile has ranged from 74 000 to 229 000 wet metric tons per year and has included about twenty species belonging to Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. The only source of this production has been the exploitation of natural beds, except for Gracilaria, which is the only case of commercial cultivation and contributes significant quantities to total production. Initially most of the raw material was exported but currently important quantities of Gracilaria and several carrageenophytes are being processed by local industry. Changes in production of the main resources are analyzed with consideration of potential demand, level of knowledge about natural beds, and the situation of total Gracilaria farming, in order to attempt predictions for the supply. Current possibilities of applying new technologies to cultivate other economically important Chilean seaweeds are also analyzed and discussed. 相似文献
