At calving, purebred animals of the Belgian Blue (BB) breed are compromised by the incompatibility in size and shape of the dam and her calf, resulting in a very high incidence of dystocia problems. To clarify which body parts of the calf are of decisive importance to allow natural delivery and to investigate both the mean value as well as the variation among these body sizes within this breed (variation being an important condition for selection), measurements of nine body parts (body weight at birth (BW), body length (BL), length of the head (LH), shoulder width (SW), hip width (HW), heart girth (HG), withers height (WH) and the circumference of the fetlock of both the front (CFF) and the hind leg (CFH)) were assessed in 147 newborn purebred BB calves on 17 farms. Simple and partial correlations were assessed and we examined whether environmental factors (gender of the calf, parity of the cow, type of calving, season of birth and time of measurement after birth) were significantly associated with these specific calf measurements. The mean BW was 49.2 ± 7.1 kg. The average BL was 56.4 ± 4.5 cm and the mean LH was 24.4 ± 2.3 cm. Measurements obtained for SW and HW were 22.4 ± 2.2 and 22.9 ± 2.1 cm, respectively, whereas the mean WH was 71.1 ± 4.7 cm. Measurements of circumferences revealed a CFF of 17.9 ± 1.1 cm, a CFH of 18.0 ± 1.0 cm and a mean HG of 78.0 ± 5.4 cm. Partial correlations of the BW with eight body measurements were significant (P < 0.01) and ranged between 0.17 and 0.85; 0.42 and 0.88; and 0.24 and 0.88 when corrected for gender, parity and type of calving, respectively. BL (P < 0.01) and the CFF and CFH (P < 0.001) are larger in bull calves than in heifer calves. Calves born through caesarean section had broader SW (P < 0.01) and HW (P < 0.01) when compared with calves born after natural calving (defined as born per vaginam without assistance or with slight traction). Sizes of calves born out of multiparous cows were generally larger than of calves born out of heifers (SW: P < 0.001; HW: P < 0.05). As SW and HW are the broadest points of a BB calf, they are both candidates for being the limiting measures for calving ease, but the difference between HW and SW for the total data set was not different from zero (P > 0.05). In contrast to male calves in which no significant difference (between HW and SW) could be found, female calves show the difference between HW and SW that was significantly different from zero (P < 0.001); thus, in female calves, the HW is the most limiting factor of the calf's body. The significant variation in some body measures between the calves and the strong correlation within these sizes raises the possibility of selection towards smaller calves aiming to limit the dystocia problem in the BB breed. Furthermore, on the basis of our results, we were able to build equations for the farmer to use at the moment of calving containing the LH, the CF and the calf's gender to estimate SW and HW, the limiting body parts of the calf to be born naturally. Together with the knowledge of the pelvic size of the dam, this information gives the obstetrician or the farmer a more accurate prediction of the probability of natural calving at parturition.  相似文献

As the proportion of sapwood (SW) transformed into heartwood(HW) is irregular both radially and longitudinally in trunksof Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.), it has been suggestedthat HW formation is a developmental process, regulated internallywithin the tree. In trees where stem growth is eccentric dueto stem lean or wind action, the number of annual growth ringsof SW transformed into HW is greater on the compressed sideof the tree. To determine the contribution to bending stiffness,if any, of this prematurely formed HW, four point bending testswere carried out on fresh HW and SW samples taken from the samegrowth ring, or neighbouring growth rings, at different cross-sectionalpositions at a height of 2 m from six 52-year-old Maritime pines.The mean (±s.e.) modulus of elasticity (E) was 7.6 ±0.3 GPa (longitudinal direction) for all samples. No significantdifferences in E were found between HW and SW; thus HW doesnot play a significant mechanical role in bending stiffness.To test a second hypothesis that early HW formation on the compressedside of trees may maintain a constant, optimal volume of SWaround the tree, the Pipe Model Theory was applied to 12 52-year-oldleaning Maritime pines (angle of lean varied from 0–22°).The surface area (S) of the SW was determined at different heightsup the trunk and correlated with crown surface area (Scrown).Regressions between SSWandScrown were highly significant, therebysupporting the theory that HW formation and extension is controlledinternally in Maritime pine. HW formation in Maritime pine thenserves to maintain an optimal proportion of functional SW whichis an important criterion for survival in a species often subjectedto severe drought for long periods. The tryptophan analog, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HW), has a significant absorbance between 310–320 nm, which allows it to act as an exclusive fluorescence probe in protein mixtures containing a large number of tryptophan residues. Here for the first time a method is reported for the biosynthetic incorporation of 5HW into an expressed protein, the Y57W mutant of the Ca2+ binding protein, oncomodulin. Fluorescence anisotropy and time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements of the interaction between anti-oncomodulin antibodies and the 5HW-incorporated oncomodulin conveniently provide evidence of complex formation and epitope identification that could not be obtained with the natural amino acid. This report demonstrates the significant potential for the use or 5HW as an intrinsic probe in the study of structure and dynamics of protein—protein interactions.  相似文献

We investigate fundamental decisions in the design of instruction set architectures for linear genetic programs that are used as both model systems in evolutionary biology and underlying solution representations in evolutionary computation. We subjected digital organisms with each tested architecture to seven different computational environments designed to present a range of evolutionary challenges. Our goal was to engineer a general purpose architecture that would be effective under a broad range of evolutionary conditions. We evaluated six different types of architectural features for the virtual CPUs: (1) genetic flexibility: we allowed digital organisms to more precisely modify the function of genetic instructions, (2) memory: we provided an increased number of registers in the virtual CPUs, (3) decoupled sensors and actuators: we separated input and output operations to enable greater control over data flow. We also tested a variety of methods to regulate expression: (4) explicit labels that allow programs to dynamically refer to specific genome positions, (5) position-relative search instructions, and (6) multiple new flow control instructions, including conditionals and jumps. Each of these features also adds complication to the instruction set and risks slowing evolution due to epistatic interactions. Two features (multiple argument specification and separated I/O) demonstrated substantial improvements in the majority of test environments, along with versions of each of the remaining architecture modifications that show significant improvements in multiple environments. However, some tested modifications were detrimental, though most exhibit no systematic effects on evolutionary potential, highlighting the robustness of digital evolution. Combined, these observations enhance our understanding of how instruction architecture impacts evolutionary potential, enabling the creation of architectures that support more rapid evolution of complex solutions to a broad range of challenges.  相似文献

Studies on the genetic regulation of growth are confounded by the multigenic basis of growth. There is a need to isolate simplified genetic systems for the study of growth. We compared two closely related mouse strains and their F1 hybrids with regard to birth and weaning weights. The strains we used were C57BL/6 (B6) and a congenic derivative of B6 (HW54) that contains a short segment of BALB/c chromosome 7 spanning the H-24 and Gpi-1 loci. Despite the genetic similarity of these strains, they differed significantly in both birth and weaning weights. At birth, B6 pups were on average as much as 6.6% heavier than were pups from HW54. By the time of weaning, this trend was reversed; HW54 pups were as much as 13.8% heavier than were B6 pups. (B6 x HW54)F1 hybrids were intermediate between the parental strains in birth weight but were identical to B6 animals at weaning. An analysis of the F2 generation suggested that postnatal growth differences between B6 and HW54 are probably dependent on the maternal genotype. These strain-specific growth rates result from polymorphism at a restricted portion of the genome and represent a highly simplified system for the study of the genetics of growth.  相似文献

An early warning system for biological monitoring of aquatic environment is proposed, which is based on an analysis of mussel valve movements. It consists of an analog monitor of an original design (analog recorder and analyzer of opening/closing of valves in a group of mussels) and outside devices (multimeters, computers, and mobile phones). In the monitor, an analysis of the state of valve position sensors, summing/averaging of voltage values, and generation of a warning signal are performed in the analog mode. The proposed system (a) diagnoses the state of valve position sensors, (b) determines the voltage representing the average valve opening in a group of mussels (6–12 individuals), (c) generates a warning signal; and, by means of peripheral devices, (d) registers the average voltage of sensors and (e) transmits a warning signal via a mobile communication net. The system can provide an addition (and, sometimes, an alternative) to complicated digital systems analogous to MosselMonitor®.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to compare three systems for estrus detection and combinations of these systems on a large commercial dairy (1075 lactating cows) during stress of summer heat. At 37-45 days in milk (DIM), 255 cows were fitted with a HeatWatch device (HW; DDx Inc., Denver, CO), an activity sensor ALPRO (ALPRO; DeLaval Inc., Kansas City, MO), and visually observed (VO) three times daily. Pregnancy status was determined by uterine palpation per rectum 35-49 days following artificial insemination (AI). Effects of DIM, parity, standing events, inseminator, and interval between onset of estrus and AI on conception rates were determined using logistic regression. Efficiencies for detection of estrus, determined by comparing detected periods of estrus with a theoretical total of 570 periods, were 49.3% (VO), 37.2% (ALPRO), 48.0% (HW), and 80.2% for all three systems simultaneously. Conception rates (LSM+/-S.E.) for cows detected by one or more of the three systems were 6.2+/-3.9 for VO, 19.8+/-5.6 for ALPRO, 17.3+/-5.0 for HW, 22.8+/-7.0 for VO+ALPRO, 26.9+/-4.6 for VO+HW, 23.2+/-5.2 for ALPRO+HW, and 18.4+/-4.7 for VO+ALPRO+HW. Inseminations performed during no and mild heat stress (temperature-humidity index; THI< or =76) had greater conception rate (P<0.05; 38.8%) compared to AI performed during moderated heat stress conditions (THI>76; 17.6%). Number of mounts were higher for primiparous versus multiparous cows (P<0.05). Cows over 80 DIM during estrus exhibited fewer (P<0.05) standing events. The highest conception rate occurred with the combination of VO+HW, which confirms the premise that combination of multiple systems enhances both the efficiency and accuracy of estrus detection.  相似文献

The topic addressed is that of combining self-constructing chemical systems with electronic computation to form unconventional embedded computation systems performing complex nano-scale chemical tasks autonomously. The hybrid route to complex programmable chemistry, and ultimately to artificial cells based on novel chemistry, requires a solution of the two-way massively parallel coupling problem between digital electronics and chemical systems. We present a chemical microprocessor technology and show how it can provide a generic programmable platform for complex molecular processing tasks in Field Programmable Chemistry, including steps towards the grand challenge of constructing the first electronic chemical cells. Field programmable chemistry employs a massively parallel field of electrodes, under the control of latched voltages, which are used to modulate chemical activity. We implement such a field programmable chemistry which links to chemistry in rather generic, two-phase microfluidic channel networks that are separated into weakly coupled domains. Electric fields, produced by the high-density array of electrodes embedded in the channel floors, are used to control the transport of chemicals across the hydrodynamic barriers separating domains. In the absence of electric fields, separate microfluidic domains are essentially independent with only slow diffusional interchange of chemicals. Electronic chemical cells, based on chemical microprocessors, exploit a spatially resolved sandwich structure in which the electronic and chemical systems are locally coupled through homogeneous fine-grained actuation and sensor networks and play symmetric and complementary roles. We describe how these systems are fabricated, experimentally test their basic functionality, simulate their potential (e.g. for feed forward digital electrophoretic (FFDE) separation) and outline the application to building electronic chemical cells.  相似文献

Migratory divides are thought to facilitate behavioral, ecological, and genetic divergence among populations with different migratory routes. However, it is currently contentious how much genetic divergence is needed to maintain distinct migratory behavior across migratory divides. Here we investigate patterns of neutral genetic differentiation among Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) populations with different migratory strategies across Europe. We compare the level of genetic divergence of populations migrating to southwestern (SW) or southeastern (SE) wintering areas with birds wintering in the British Isles following a recently established northwesterly (NW) migration route. The migratory divide between SW and SE wintering areas can be interpreted as a result of a re-colonization process after the last glaciation. Thus we predicted greater levels of genetic differentiation among the SW/SE populations. However, a lack of genetic differentiation was found between SW and SE populations, suggesting that interbreeding likely occurs among Blackcaps with different migratory orientations across a large area; therefore the SW/SE migratory divide can be seen as diffuse, broad band and is, at best, a weak isolating barrier. Conversely, weak, albeit significant genetic differentiation was evident between NW and SW migrants breeding sympatrically in southern Germany, suggesting a stronger isolating mechanism may be acting in this population. Populations located within/near the SW/SE contact zone were the least genetically divergent from NW migrants, confirming NW migrants likely originated from within the contact zone. Significant isolation-by-distance was found among eastern Blackcap populations (i.e. SE migrants), but not among western populations (i.e. NW and SW migrants), revealing different patterns of genetic divergence among Blackcap populations in Europe. We discuss possible explanations for the genetic structure of European Blackcaps and how gene flow influences the persistence of divergent migratory behaviors.  相似文献

The paper recommends a broadening of Howard Pattee's seminal distinction between a dynamic and a linguistic mode of living systems. It is observed that even the dynamic mode is always a semiotic mode although indexical and analogically coded rather than symbolic and digitally coded. The analogically coded messages corresponds to a kind of tacit knowledge hidden in macromolecular structure and shape (e.g. molecular complementarity) and in organismic architecture and communication, i.e. in the semiotic interactions of the body. It is claimed that the origin of referential processes is tied to the flow of historical singularities. The function of analog and digital codes in evolutionary systems is discussed.  相似文献

Results of clinical studies suggest that there is a relationship between breathing-related sleep disorders and behavioral disorder and health effects. Apnea is considered one of the major sleep disorders with great accession in population and significant impact on patient's health. Symptoms include disruption of oxygenation, snoring, choking sensations, apneic episodes, poor concentration, memory loss, and daytime somnolence. Diagnosis of apnea and breath disorders involves monitoring patient's biosignals and breath during sleep in specialized clinics requiring expensive equipment and technical personnel. This paper discusses the design and technical details of an integrated low-cost system capable for preliminary detection of sleep breath disorders at patient's home utilizing patient sound signals. The paper describes the proposed architecture and the corresponding HW and SW modules, along with a preliminary evaluation.  相似文献

This paper aims to set the foundations for an integration of digital photography into the broader framework of visual representation. The current climate seems to be marked by a preoccupation with contrasting the digital with the analog image. An alternative cross‐cultural approach is proposed, employing “systems of representation” characterized by the wide range of strategies for communicating through the visual image that can be found in the anthropology of art. These take into account the optical principles of depiction and their cultural determinants. The paper aims to place the practice of the digital generation and manipulation of photographs at a point of convergence with a variety of other means of transcribing the three‐dimensional world onto a two‐dimensional flat surface.  相似文献

The suppressor of Hairy-wing [SU(HW)] binding region disrupts communication between a large number of enhancers and promoters and protects transgenes from chromosomal position effects. These properties classify the SU(HW) binding region as an insulator. While enhancers are blocked in a general manner, protection from repressors appears to be more variable. In these studies, we address whether repression resulting from the Polycomb group genes can be blocked by the SU(HW) binding region. The effects of this binding region on repression established by an Ultrabithorax Polycomb group Response Element were examined. A transposon carrying two reporter genes, the yellow and white genes, was used so that repression and insulation could be assayed simultaneously. We demonstrate that the SU(HW) binding region is effective at preventing Polycomb group repression. These studies suggest that one role of the su(Hw) protein may be to restrict the range of action of repressors, such as the Polycomb group proteins, throughout the euchromatic regions of the genome.  相似文献

A flexible system has been developed for on-line breath-by-breath measurements of variables commonly included in studies of breathing pattern and mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1). The system, utilizing analog signals for mouth pressure and inspiratory flow as inputs, includes a breathing pattern monitor and a pneumatically driven occlusion device designed to be compatible with a low-cost microcomputer and analog and/or digital readout instruments. The design of the system permits accurate breathing pattern and P0.1 measurements even at the highest flow and breathing frequency encountered in muscular exercise studies.  相似文献

Both load cell and mechanical scale-based hydrostatic weighing (HW) systems are used for the measurement of underwater weight. However, there has been no direct comparison of the 2 methods. The purpose of the current investigation was to simultaneously compare a load cell and mechanical scale for use in HW. Twenty-seven men and women (mean ± SD, age: 22 ± 2 years) participated in the 2-day investigation. Each subject completed 2 HW assessments 24 hours apart. Single-day comparisons of all trials for both days revealed no significant difference between the mechanical scale and the load cell (mean difference < 0.016 kg, p > 0.05). True underwater weight values were not significantly different between methods for either days (mean difference < 0.014 kg, p > 0.05) and accounted for a mean difference in percent fat (%FAT) of <0.108%. The 95% limits of agreement indicated a maximum difference between methods of 0.53% FAT. Both methods produced similar reliability SEM values (mechanical SEM < 0.72%FAT, load cell SEM < 0.75%FAT). In conclusion, there was no difference between mechanical scale and load cell measurements of underwater weights and the added precision of the load cell only marginally (<0.16%FAT) improved day-to-day reliability. Either a mechanical scale or load cell can be used for HW with similar accuracy and reliability in young adults with a body mass index of 18.7-34.4 (5-25%FAT).  相似文献

The direct interaction of drugs with the cell membrane is often neglected when drug effects are studied. Systematic investigations are hindered by the complexity of the natural membrane and model membrane systems can offer a useful alternative. Here some examples are reviewed of how model membrane architectures including vesicles, Langmuir monolayers and solid supported membranes can be used to investigate the effects of drug molecules on the membrane structure, and how these interactions can translate into effects on embedded membrane proteins.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the potential for the use of engineering methods that were originally developed for the design of embedded computer systems, to analyse biological cell systems. For embedded systems as well as for biological cell systems, design is a feature that defines their identity. The assembly of different components in designs of both systems can vary widely. In contrast to the biology domain, the computer engineering domain has the opportunity to quickly evaluate design options and consequences of its systems by methods for computer aided design and in particular design space exploration. We argue that there are enough concrete similarities between the two systems to assume that the engineering methodology from the computer systems domain, and in particular that related to embedded systems, can be applied to the domain of cellular systems. This will help to understand the myriad of different design options cellular systems have. First we compare computer systems with cellular systems. Then, we discuss exactly what features of engineering methods could aid researchers with the analysis of cellular systems, and what benefits could be gained.  相似文献
