The distribution and abundance of the myxosporean parasite Parvicapsula minibicornis in the Klamath River mirrored that of Ceratomyxa shasta, with which it shares both its vertebrate and invertebrate host. Assay of fish held at sentinel sites and water samples collected from those sites showed that parasite prevalence was highest below Iron Gate dam, which is the barrier to anadromous salmon passage. Above this barrier parasite levels fluctuated, with the parasite detected in the free-flowing river reaches between reservoirs. This was consistent with infection prevalence in the polychaete host, Manayunkia speciosa, which was greater than 1% only in populations tested below Iron Gate dam. Although a low prevalence of infection was detected in juvenile out-migrant fish in the Trinity River, the tributaries tested did not appear to be a significant source of the parasite to the mainstem despite the presence of large numbers of infected adult salmon that migrate and spawn there. Rainbow trout became infected during sentinel exposure, which expands the host range for P. minibicornis and suggests that wild rainbow trout populations are a reservoir for infection, especially above Iron Gate dam. High parasite prevalence in the lower Klamath River is likely a combined effect of high spore input from heavily infected, spawned adult salmon and the proximity to dense populations of polychaetes.  相似文献

Kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka kennerlyi ), a landlocked subspecies of sockeye salmon, exhibited hypothalamic-pituitary interrenal (HPI, adrenal homologue) axis activation and an increase in plasma cortisol concentration up to 639 +/- 55.9 ng/ml in association with upstream migration in the upper Colorado River even though they were not exposed to a change in salinity and lengthy migration. Kokanee salmon were collected at various stages of migration and concomitant sexual maturation. The pattern of cortisol elevation in kokanee is similar to that in ocean-run sockeye salmon (O. nerka nerka). The presence of plasma cortisol elevation in an upstream migrating, landlocked Pacific salmon suggests that stressors previously considered to cause the cortisol increase, such as long-distance migration and changes in salinity, may not be primary causes of the HPI axis activation.  相似文献

Seasonal dymanic of the infestation of young landlocked salmon (Salmo salar morpha sebago, Girard) by the monogenean species Gyrodactylus salaris Malberg, 1957 was studied in the river Lizhma, Karelia. It is established, that the temperature optimal for the development and reproduction of the parasite is about 3-8 degrees C. It is stated, that the abundance of G. salaris in the river Lizhma do not reach so high values, as it was observed in the regions outside the natural area of the parasite.  相似文献

The Formosan landlocked salmon (Oncorhynchus masou formosanus) are at a high risk of extinction, and the sustained maintenance of the population will soon depend on aquaculture systems, which use cryopreservation of spermatozoa to increase genetic diversity. We investigated the effectiveness of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl-acetamide (DMA), and methanol as cryoprotectants in combination with 300 mM glucose as extender on the freezing of Formosan landlocked salmon spermatozoa. We also evaluated the morphological changes of Formosan landlocked salmon spermatozoa after their immediate dilution in the 300 mM glucose-DMSO extender and after freeze-thawing. The spermatozoa frozen with DMSO as a cryoprotectant showed significantly higher post-thaw motility and fertility than spermatozoa frozen with DMA or methanol. The fertilization capacity of frozen-thawed Formosan landlocked salmon was comparable to that of fresh spermatozoa. Intersubspecies fertilization trials between cryopreserved Formosan landlocked salmon spermatozoa and Amago salmon eggs showed high fertilization rates. Based on the findings, the potential value of using sperm bank to safeguard this endangered species is discussed.  相似文献

Parvicapsula minibicornis is a myxozoan parasite implicated in mortalities of both juvenile and pre-spawning adult salmon in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Disease severity and presentation varies between salmon species and geographical localities. To better characterize population structure of the parasite, we sought genetic markers in the P. minibicornis ribosomal RNA gene. We compared samples from California with the type specimen from British Columbia, identified sequence variations, and then sequenced 197 samples from fish, river water and the parasite's polychaete worm host. Although DNA sequences of the parasite were >98·9% similar, there was enough variation to define 15 genotypes. All genotypes were detected in fish samples, although not in all species. A single genotype only was found in sockeye and pink salmon in the Fraser River Basin, but was not detected in sockeye from the adjacent Columbia River Basin. All coho salmon, irrespective of river basin, were infected with a unique mix of 2 genotypes. These data indicated that the P. minibicornis population exhibited strong signals of structuring by both geography and salmonid host species. Particular genotypes may correlate with disease differences seen in salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

The 26 specimens of the landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. from Namsen river and its tributary Melingselva river (central Norway) were studied by the method of complete parasitological examination in the period of 1997-1998. The 15 parasite species have been recovered. Ration of parasite with a direct and complex cycle is approximately equal, 6 and 9 respectively. Larval stages of parasites predominate among the parasites with a complex cycle. The parasite fauna fond in the landlocked Atlantic salmon is most similar to that in youngsters of the lake salmon (Salmo salar morpha sebago Girard) and the migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).  相似文献

The myxosporean parasite Parvicapsula minibicornis is described from adult sockeye and coho salmon during spawning migrations in tributaries of the Columbia River in Canada and the United States. These observations extend the known distribution of this parasite from the Fraser River drainage basin. The parasite was identified in Columbia River salmonids using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and by in situ hybridization, but unlike in Fraser River salmon, it was not observed in conventional histological preparations of the kidney. Prevalence of the parasite determined by PCR was higher in spawning sockeye from the Fraser River than in those from the Okanagan River. Our ability to explain the relatively low prevalence and absence of clinical P. minibicornis infections in Columbia River salmon is hampered by our poor understanding of the life cycle of this parasite.  相似文献

Significant differences of LDH-B2*and ALAT-2*gene frequencies were detected not only among samples within the spawner and juvenile groups but also between spawners and juveniles as a whole. The average heterozygosity of sockeye salmon from the Ola River was considerably lower than the corresponding values for other Asian populations. The Ola sockeye salmon is genetically similar to the population from the Pakhach River of the northwestern Kamchatka Peninsula but different from other Kamchatka populations and the Okhota River population. Three microsatellite loci were used to examine genetic variation among 16 coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ) populations within the Fraser River drainage system, in British Columbia, Canada. Each locus was highly polymorphic with 30 alleles at the Ots 101 locus, 15 alleles at the Ots 3 locus and 38 alleles at the Ots 103 locus. Average observed heterozygosities were 86.1%, 70%, and 56.1%, respectively. With the exception of the Dunn and Lemieux River populations, Chi-square tests and F ST values indicated that all populations had significantly different allele frequencies. Two distinct population groups within the Fraser River drainage were observed. Lower Fraser River populations were strongly differentiated from populations spawning in the upper Fraser River, which includes the Thompson River (a tributary flowing into the upper Fraser) and the portion of the Fraser River beyond the precipitous Fraser River canyon. This regional population structure may have resulted from colonization of the upper and lower Fraser River regions by different founder populations following Pleistocene glaciation, and be maintained by adaptive differences between the two groups of coho salmon. Coho salmon populations in the upper Fraser and Thompson River drainages form an evolutionarily significant unit (ESU) of importance for conservation of biodiversity in coho salmon. Microsatellite DNA loci show promise as technically simple and highly informative genetic markers for coho salmon population management.  相似文献

Gyrodacrylus salaris was most probably introduced to the River Lakselva in 1975 through stocking of Atlantic salmon from an infected hatchery. The parasite population grew rapidly, and the parasite spread throughout the entire watercourse during the summer of 1976. This epidemic situation led to mortality among the young Atlantic salmon, and the density of salmon parr was heavily reduced from 1976 to 1977. The density of salmon parr has remained close to zero since then, while there are no apparent trends toward decrease or increase in the density of brown trout. In spite of the reduced density of young salmon, a new epidemic has developed each year among the few young 0+ and 1+ Atlantic salmon present in the river. Results from successive sampling during the summer of 1987, 1988 and 1989 indicate that most of the presmolt salmon are attacked during their first summer or autumn of life. The infection develops into an epidemic during the first autumn, winter or the next summer. The build-up of the parasite burden on the fish leads in turn to mortality. Norwegian Atlantic salmon probably have no resistance against G. salaris, since the parasite has recently been introduced to Norwegian rivers.  相似文献

Small populations can provide insights into ecological and evolutionary aspects of species distributions over space and time. In the Wood River system in Alaska, USA, small aggregates of Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and chum salmon (O. keta) spawn in an area dominated by sockeye salmon (O. nerka). Our objective was to determine whether these Chinook and chum salmon are reproductively isolated, self-sustaining populations, population sinks that produce returning adults but receive immigration, or strays from other systems that do not produce returning adults. DNA samples collected from adult chum salmon from 16 streams and Chinook salmon from four streams in the Wood River system over 3 years were compared to samples from large populations in the nearby Nushagak River system, a likely source of strays. For both species, microsatellite markers indicated no significant genetic differentiation between the two systems. Simulations of microsatellite data in a large source and a smaller sink population suggested that considerable immigration would be required to counteract the diverging effects of genetic drift and produce genetic distances as small as those observed, considering the small census sizes of the two species in the Wood River system. Thus, the Wood River system likely receives substantial immigration from neighbouring watersheds, such as the Nushagak River system, which supports highly productive runs. Although no data on population productivity in the Wood River system exist, our results suggest source-sink dynamics for the two species, a finding relevant to other systems where salmonid population sizes are limited by habitat factors.  相似文献

Galaxias maculatus, broadly distributed in the southern hemisphere, presents both diadromic and landlocked populations. The upstream migration of larvae and juveniles from the sea to freshwater habitats is a characteristic phenomenon of diadromous populations, but upstream migration has never been reported in those that are landlocked. The objective of this study was to establish the population dynamics of a peculiar riverine landlocked population that presents an upstream migration at the larvae–juvenile transition from the Piedra del Águila Reservoir to the Caleufú River (Argentina). A spawning season from September to November and the arrival of shoals of metamorphic larvae and juveniles from February to April to the adult habitat were coincidental with lacustrine landlocked populations, but not with diadromous populations. Growth rate and age at migration, 147 ± 22.6 days, were also similar to other landlocked and diadromous populations. The arrival of these shoals produced a 20‐fold increase in fish density while the two cohorts of G. maculatus overlapped in time and space. No significant differences in morphology or vertebrae number were detected when riverine and reservoir adults were compared. The great life history plasticity of G. maculatus, shown to be even greater in our results, could be the key to explain the wide distribution of this species in the southern hemisphere. Likewise, discovering this juvenile potamodromous behaviour in a landlocked population will provide a new view for the analysis of the ways of this species’ dispersion in continental waters.  相似文献

Thiamin is an essential water-soluble B vitamin known for its wide range of metabolic functions and antioxidant properties. Over the past decades, reproductive failures induced by thiamin deficiency have been observed in several salmonid species worldwide, but it is unclear why this micronutrient deficiency arises. Few studies have compared thiamin concentrations in systems of salmonid populations with or without documented thiamin deficiency. Moreover, it is not well known whether and how thiamin concentration changes during the marine feeding phase and the spawning migration. Therefore, samples of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were collected when actively feeding in the open Baltic Sea, after the sea migration to natal rivers, after river migration, and during the spawning period. To compare populations of Baltic salmon with systems without documented thiamin deficiency, a population of landlocked salmon located in Lake Vänern (Sweden) was sampled as well as salmon from Norwegian rivers draining into the North Atlantic Ocean. Results showed the highest mean thiamin concentrations in Lake Vänern salmon, followed by North Atlantic, and the lowest in Baltic populations. Therefore, salmon in the Baltic Sea seem to be consistently more constrained by thiamin than those in other systems. Condition factor and body length had little to no effect on thiamin concentrations in all systems, suggesting that there is no relation between the body condition of salmon and thiamin deficiency. In our large spatiotemporal comparison of salmon populations, thiamin concentrations declined toward spawning in all studied systems, suggesting that the reduction in thiamin concentration arises as a natural consequence of starvation rather than to be related to thiamin deficiency in the system. These results suggest that factors affecting accumulation during the marine feeding phase are key for understanding the thiamin deficiency in salmonids.  相似文献

Synopsis Age at maturity in male Atlantic salmon parr from landlocked populations in the Watshishou and Musquaro Rivers is significantly greater than in anadromous populations from the same rivers. We conclude that high post-smolt mortality in anadromous stocks is conducive to male parr maturity at an early age. We also suggest that the lower proportion of maturing male parr in landlocked stocks may be related to competition among males for mates and the smaller ultimate size of spawning adult landlocked salmon.  相似文献

Myxospores consistent with species of Parvicapsula were observed in kidney of 15 of 95 (15.8%) adult pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, collected from the Quinsam River, British Columbia, Canada. The spores were elongate and curved with unequal valves, and 2 spherical-to-subspherical polar capsules within a highly refractile capsular region. The spores were unlike those of P. minibicornis found in nearby populations of Pacific salmon, Oncorhynchus spp. The spore dimensions were similar to those of Parvicapsula pseudobranchicola from Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in Norway, and the spores seemed similar to an undescribed Parvicapsula sp. from several Oncorhynchus spp. in Puget Sound, Washington. A sequence of 1,480 base pairs (bp) of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) of the parasite from pink salmon was most similar to, but distinct from, that of other Parvicapsula spp. The parasite is described as a new species, Parvicapsula kabatai n. sp. Polymerase chain reactions amplified a 158-bp sequence, unique to P. kabatai n. sp., from 22 of 93 (23.7%) adult pink salmon kidney samples, from 3 of 3 juvenile pink salmon collected in the ocean 125 km north of the Quinsam River, and from 2 of 5 archival coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, samples from Puget Sound. The parasite occurs within the lumen and epithelium of renal tubules and ducts, and within the renal interstitium. Concurrent infections with extrasporogonic stages of the myxosporean CKX, the microsporidian Loma salmonae, and a Myxidium sp. also were observed in the adult pink salmon.  相似文献

This study focuses on the strategy for the conservation of masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, in the northern part of the species range (via the masu populations in Sakhalin Oblast), based on data of its population structure. It is shown that masu populations that inhabit different rivers genetically differ from each other in allele frequencies at microsatellite markers. In the Naiba River basin, at least two genetically distinct masu populations exist: in the upper reaches and in a tributary, the Bolshoy Takoy River. The masu populations on Iturup Island significantly differ from those on Sakhalin Island; within Sakhalin, the masu salmon from the Chernaya River in the southwestern part of the island is genetically distinct from the southeastern Sakhalin and Aniva Bay populations. The genetic diversity of Iturup populations is substantially lower than that on Sakhalin, probably due to their small sizes. The measures for the conservation and recovery of masu salmon populations should be based primarily on their own genetic resources, or, in the case of a lack of spawners, on the base populations of their ecological/geographical region. In the latter case, masu populations of large rivers can be considered as base ones: for southeastern Sakhalin, this is masu salmon of the Naiba River; for Aniva Bay, this is masu salmon of the Lyutoga River. Transplantation of fish, fertilized eggs, or any other genetic material from a population that is different genetically and inhabits the waters with different ecological gradients should be strongly restricted. The formosan masu salmon from Taiwan Island is studied as an example of a strict genetic isolate.  相似文献

The myxozoan parasite Ceratomyxa shasta is a significant pathogen of juvenile salmonids in the Pacific Northwest of North America and is limiting recovery of Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and coho (O. kisutch) salmon populations in the Klamath River. We conducted a 5-year monitoring program that comprised concurrent sentinel fish exposures and water sampling across 212 river kilometers of the Klamath River. We used percent mortality and degree-days to death to measure disease severity in fish. We analyzed water samples using quantitative PCR and Sanger sequencing, to determine total parasite density and relative abundance of C. shasta genotypes, which differ in their pathogenicity to salmonids. We detected the parasite throughout the study zone, but parasite density and genetic composition fluctuated spatially and temporally. Chinook and coho mortality increased with density of their specific parasite genotype, but mortality-density thresholds and time to death differed. A lethality threshold of 40% mortality was reached with 10 spores liter(-1) for Chinook but only 5 spores liter(-1) for coho. Parasite density did not affect degree-days to death for Chinook but was negatively correlated for coho, and there was wider variation among coho individuals. These differences likely reflect the different life histories and genetic heterogeneity of the salmon populations. Direct quantification of the density of host-specific parasite genotypes in water samples offers a management tool for predicting host population-level impacts.  相似文献

Data on the parasite diversity in Salmonidae fish parr from different parts of the Utsjoki River obtained during 1993-1995 and 2006-2007 are presented. Three fish species, Salmo salar L., S. truttae L., and Salvelinus alpinus L., were examined on the presence of helminthes. Twenty species of salmon parasites were found, the majority of which are the parasites with complicated life cycles. Infusorians C apriniana piscium, myxosporidia Chloromyxum januaricus and Myxobolus neurobius, metacercaria of the genera Diplostomum and Apatemon, and the nematode Raphidascaris acus larvae were the most numerous in salmon parasite fauna. Brown trout had the most number of specific parasite species, whereas char was infested by protozoan parasites only.  相似文献

Anadromous Atlantic salmon swim-up fry were stocked into a small pond (surface area 4.0 ha; maximum depth 3.6 m; mean depth 1.9m) in urban St John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The outlet from the pond was placed underground about 15 years ago. The growth rate of young salmon in this pond was two to five times as fast as in populations in insular Newfoundland. Females matured after a size at which they should have smolted and emigrated to sea. Growth, fecundity, and egg size of transplanted females are compared with those of the donor stock and with those reported for populations of landlocked salmon in insular Newfoundland. The evolutionary implications of the study are discussed.  相似文献
