This paper documents a newly discovered pattern of biological disjunction between NW and SE New Caledonia. The disjunction occurs in 87 (mapped) taxa, including plants, moths and lizards, and correlates spatially with the West Caledonian fault. This fault is controversial; some geologists interpret it as a major structure, others deny that it exists. It may have undergone 150–200 km of lateral movement and it is suggested that this has caused the biological disjunction by pulling populations apart. The disjunction matches similar dextral disjunctions of taxa along transform faults in New Zealand, New Guinea, California and Indonesia. Major biogeographic patterns – whether centres of diversity, boundaries of allopatric taxa or disjunctions – all include taxa with many different degrees of differentiation. Studies using a clock model of evolution will therefore interpret a biogeographic pattern as the result of many disparate events. However, this line of reasoning reaches the untenable conclusion that biogeographic patterns, including normal allopatry, are always caused by chance dispersal, never by vicariance. A more productive approach, avoiding the pitfalls of a fossil‐based molecular clock, involves a close examination of molecular clades, comparative biogeography and tectonics. The Alpine Fault biogeographic hypothesis revisited   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The New Zealand Alpine Fault is a major tectonic feature located on the mutual boundary of the Australian and Pacific Plates which is hypothesized to have undergone some 470 km of right‐lateral displacement. The Nelson and Westland provinces have moved north‐east relative to the rest of the South Island. Many plant and animal taxa show a conspicuous distribution gap in the central South Island, and traditionally this has been explained by glacial extirpation of the central populations. However, the gap is usually filled by a closely related taxon. Furthermore, the taxa involved occupy a wide ecological range, and include intertidal algae, shorefishes, lowland trees, and alpine herbs and insects that thrive around glaciers. Bot. 36, 65–69.], based on track and phylogenetic analyses, proposes that the disjunction has instead been caused by movement on the fault pulling apart plant and animal populations. Wallis and Trewick (2001 ) [ Wallis, G.P., Trewick, S.A., 2001 . Finding fault with vicariance: a critique of Heads (1998). Syst. Biol. 50, 602–609.] provided a critique of this idea and pointed out what they felt were nine problems with it. These problems are answered here and shown to result from Wallis and Trewick's misunderstanding of aspects of geology and biology involved in the hypothesis. In particular, they have confused the age of inception of the fault with the age of movement along it, and, by neglecting the related central taxa in the “gap”, have assumed the biogeographic hypothesis to be an uninformative two‐area statement, whereas in fact it is an informative three‐ or four‐area statement.  相似文献

Biogeographic disjunction patterns, where multiple taxa are shared between isolated geographic areas, represent excellent systems for investigating the historical assembly of modern biotas and fundamental biological processes such as speciation, diversification, niche evolution, and evolutionary responses to climate change. Studies on plant genera disjunct across the northern hemisphere, particularly between eastern North America (ENA) and eastern Asia (EAS), have yielded tremendous insight on the geologic history and assembly of rich temperate floras. However, one of the most prevalent disjunction patterns involving ENA forests has been largely overlooked: that of taxa disjunct between ENA and cloud forests of Mesoamerica (MAM), with examples including Acer saccharum, Liquidambar styraciflua, Cercis canadensis, Fagus grandifolia, and Epifagus virginiana. Despite the remarkable nature of this disjunction pattern, which has been recognized for over 75 years, there have been few recent efforts to empirically examine its evolutionary and ecological origins. Here I synthesize previous systematic, paleobotanical, phylogenetic, and phylogeographic studies to establish what is known about this disjunction pattern to provide a roadmap for future research. I argue that this disjunction pattern, and the evolution and fossil record of the Mexican flora more broadly, represents a key missing piece in the broader puzzle of northern hemisphere biogeography. I also suggest that the ENA–MAM disjunction represents an excellent system for examining fundamental questions about how traits and life history strategies mediate plant evolutionary responses to climate change and for predicting how broadleaf temperate forests will respond to the ongoing climatic pressures of the Anthropocene.  相似文献

Five plant communities contrasting in successional status and human impact from the southern part of the ‘Wienerwald’ (Austria) are analyzed using vegetation relevés, spectra of area types and a newly proposed disjunction quotient. A climax community (Asperulo-Fagetum), a subclimax community (Querco-Carpinetum s.l.), an anthropogenous substitute community (Mesobromion) and two natural, non-climax permanent communities (Euphorbio saxatilis-Pinetum nigrae and Fumano-Stipetum eriocaulis) are recognized. The disjunction quotient is defined as the number of partial (discontinous) areas divided by the size of the total area of distribution of a species. In particular, the average disjunction quotients of the species in the first two communities reflect relatively table environments only slightly influenced by man, with many ancient, stable taxa. These communities are characterized by species with well-delimited, stable distribution areas. The species in the Mesobromion community have very low average disjunction quotients as its component species are widely and continuously distributed and are often promoted by man. In contrast to these communities, the species linked to the natural permanent, non-climax communities of extreme habitats, have high distribution quotients i.e. small, disconinuous areas; this illustrates the relic character of these plant communities and of the eastern edge of the Alps is a whole. Using the highly variable disjunction quotient of all species and communities examined, the concepts of climax and permanent communities (of different origin) are discussed with regard to European conditions.  相似文献

The apterous genus Timarcha consists of three subgenera and more than 100 species in its Palearctic distribution, with specialized feeding on few plant families. Fifty-four sequences sampled from 31 taxa of the genus plus three outgroup leaf beetles were studied for their complete cytochrome oxidase II (COII) and a fragment of 16S rDNA mitochondrial genes, representing a total of about 1200 bp. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum-parsimony and distance methods for each gene separately and for the combined data set gave compatible topologies. The subgenus Metallotimarcha consistently appears in a basal position and is well differentiated from the remaining Timarcha, but no clear monophyletic grouping of Timarchostoma and Timarcha s. str. subgenera can be deduced from our analysis. Calibration of the molecular clock has been done using the opening of the Gibraltar Strait after the Messinian salinity crisis (about 5.5 MYA) as the biogeographic event causing disjunction of two particular taxa. Accordingly, the COII evolutionary rate has been estimated to be of 0.76 x 10(-8) substitution/site/year in Timarcha. Relation between phylogeny and host-plant use indicates widening of trophic regime as a derived character in Timarcha.  相似文献

中国高等植物多样性编目是“中国生物物种名录”项目中的重要组成部分, 旨在后植物志时代对中国高等植物的物种名录进行修订和年度更新。自2017年深圳国际植物学大会以来, 中国高等植物物种名录已进行了5次年度更新。名录参考最新的植物分类学研究进展, 对各大类群全面采用有分子证据的新分类系统, 收录5年来发表的中国植物新类群和新记录, 补充往年遗漏的部分类群, 并依据新的专科专属的修订结果对发生属间分类变动的类群进行了更新。目前的中国高等植物物种名录包含角苔类4科9属27种, 苔类62科170属1,081种94个种下等级, 藓类94科453属2,006种154个种下等级, 石松类3科12属165种4个种下等级, 蕨类38科177属2,215种228个种下等级, 裸子植物10科45属291种118个种下等级, 被子植物272科3,409属32,708种6,909个种下等级, 共计483科4,275属38,493种7,507个种下等级, 较5年前增加了19科270属2,334种。  相似文献

Plant biogeographers have long argued whether plant disjunctions result from vicariance or dispersal. One of the classic patterns of plant disjunction involves New World amphitropical disjuncts, as exemplified by Tiquilia subg. Tiquilia (Boraginaceae). Subgenus Tiquilia forms a heterogeneous group of ~20 species that is amphitropically distributed in the deserts of North and South America, with four taxa endemic to the Galápagos Islands. The current study reconstructs the biogeographic history of subg. Tiquilia in order to explore the origins of New World amphitropical disjunction and of Galápagos endemism. A strongly supported phylogeny of the subgenus is estimated using sequence data from matK, ndhF, rps16, ITS, and waxy. Biogeographic analyses using combined and individual marker data sets reveal a complex history of long-distance dispersal in subg. Tiquilia. Biogeographic reconstructions imply a North American origin of the subgenus and its three major lineages and require at least four long-distance dispersal events to explain its current distribution. The South American taxa of subg. Tiquilia result from three independent and nonsimultaneous colonization events, while the monophyly and continental origins of the Galápagos endemics are unresolved. This study contributes to a growing body of evidence that intercontinental dispersal has been more common than previously realized.  相似文献

对重庆市种子植物区系进行了研究,其区系特征如下:(1)植物种类和区系组成丰富,共分布有野生种子植物208科1 127属4 764种,其科包含12种分布型和13个变型,属包含15种分布型和23个变型;(2)科的区系组成以热带成分占主要,总共包含83科,达到重庆地区种子植物总科数的39.90%,这说明重庆种子植物区系带有一定的热带亲缘关系.属的区系组成以热带成分最多,达到454属,占重庆市种子植物总属数的40.28%,表明重庆地区种子植物区系的热带亲缘关系较强;(3)特有现象明显,虽然本地区分布的特有科属相对较少,但特有种丰富.  相似文献

区域性维管植物编目对于该区域内植物多样性保护及植物资源可持续利用具有重要意义。北京作为中国首都, 尽管编目工作早在20世纪60年代就得以开展, 但近30年来没有进行系统更新。现有数据零散、不系统, 相关编目进展甚至已经落后于周边地区。本文在《北京植物志(1992年修订版)》的基础上, 结合多年实际野外调查, 通过系统检索文献资料对现有编目数据进行查漏补缺(补充新分类群、新记录)、修订名称(基于新分类修订成果)、更新分类系统(采用基于分子数据的新分类系统), 并添加物种等级、分布状态、生长状态、室内/室外、分布区、了解程度及保护状况等相关信息, 最终完成北京维管植物编目和分布数据集(分为本土植物和外来植物两个表单, 其中外来植物主要基于志书和文献记载)。截至2021年12月31日, 该数据集共有数据2,883条(本土1,680条, 外来1,203条), 其中包含北京本土野生维管植物134科611属1,597个类群(1,440种3天然杂交种46亚种97变种11变型), 与《北京植物志(1992年修订版)》相比增加3科26属173种4亚种28变种11变型, 其中列入《国家重点保护野生植物名录(2021)》的有16种(一级仅1种), 列入《北京市重点保护野生植物名录(2008)》的有90种3亚种4变种; 收录外来维管植物137科581属1,184个类群(含992种及其他种下等级), 其中栽培植物854种19杂交种15亚种29变种2变型87栽培品种38栽培群, 逸生植物132种1亚种, 归化植物77种2变种, 入侵植物27种。编目数据显示, 北京本土野生维管植物多样性整体上并不高, 主要以广泛分布的常见种为主, 特有种、狭域种以及珍稀濒危种数量不多; 同时, 北京存在大量的外来植物(许多种类在《北京植物志》各版中已经收录), 这些植物也是北京维管植物多样性的重要组成部分, 但现有数据尚不完整。  相似文献

植物的间断分布格局及其形成机制是植物地理学研究的重要问题之一。本文在对中国大陆与台湾名录整理比较的基础上,对中国西南与台湾地区的植物间断分布格局及形成机制进行了分析。结果表明,两地同种型间断分布的维管植物有198种(包括变种和亚种),隶属于56科129属,其中蕨类植物86种,裸子植物3种,双子叶植物56种,单子叶植物53种;两地异种型间断分布的维管植物有22属,隶属于15科,其中蕨类植物6属,裸子植物1属,双子叶植物7属,单子叶植物兰科8属。间断分布类群以草本植物为主,主要是蕨类和兰科植物。间断分布类群在台湾地区主要分布在中部到东北部,在大陆的分布主要集中在川东–鄂西地区、川西–滇西北地区–藏东南地区和滇东南–桂西–黔西南地区。在垂直高度上,海拔1,550–2,350m是间断分布类群最集中分布的海拔范围。我们推测中国西南与台湾地区的间断分布类群有3种来源:北半球温带、中国西南和热带亚洲来源。  相似文献

Senecio pauciflorus and S. indecorus (= Packera pauciflora and P. indecora ) are autogamous, high polyploid species with similar geographic ranges in North America. Their east-west distribution pattern including a disjunction in California is unusual within the aureoid Senecio complex and may provide insights into the origins of the aureoid complex. Taxonomic treatment of the two taxa has varied in the past due to the similarity and variability of the taxa. Results of morphological analyses of 192 herbarium specimens show that the taxa are best treated as two distinct species and that infraspecifìc variation is not related to geographical distribution. Separation of taxa remains difficult. California specimens are the most difficult to classify and may represent the ancestral group. Based on morphology and chromosome number it is suggested that the 5. pauciflorus-S. indecorus group may have originated from the arctic-alpine aureoid group including S. cymbalaria .  相似文献

黄土高原在中国植物区系分区上属于泛北极植物区,中国-日本森林植物亚区的华北地区黄土高原植物亚地区,是东西、南北旱生、中生和水生植物交汇和聚集区域。计有种子植物147科864属3224种,其中裸子植物7科13属41种,被子植物140科851属3183种,具有中国特有属32个,黄土高原地区特有属4个,特有种164个。黄土高原地区种子植物区系的基本特征为:植物种类相对丰富,在全国植物区系上占有重要地位;植物区系起源古老,原始类群丰富;地理成分复杂多样,以温带成分占优势;与周边地区区系的联系广泛,是多种成分汇集和过渡的地区;特有性程度相对低,稀有濒危植物丰富。  相似文献

Seed germination triggered by light exposure (positive photoblastism) has been determined in quantitative studies for numerous plant families and species. For Cactaceae, positive photoblastism is thought to be associated with life form and seed mass, but this association has never been evaluated. To explore hypotheses on associations between seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, life form, taxa and plant height with Relative Light Germination (RLG) in Cactaceae, we evaluated the effect of light on seed germination of 136 taxa. The taxa studied are native to several countries: México, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Perú, USA, and Venezuela. Seed traits contrasted with RLG were life form, seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, adult plant height and taxon. We found some differences between RLG among taxa; Cacteae, Pachycereeae and Trichocereeae had higher RLG than Notocacteae. RLG was lower for seeds from taller than for shorter taxa, and lower for taxa with heavier seeds than for taxa with lighter seeds. Dispersal syndrome groups varied with RLG. RLG did not differ between cylindrical and globose taxa. Trends found here were in agreement with expectations for small-seeded species to have a light requirement to germinate more often than large-seeded species. This is the first time that cactus height is related to photoblastism. It is possible that seeds from tall plants are larger and thus have the capacity to produce taller seedlings than those from small plants, and that seedlings from large seeds with more resources have the ability to emerge from greater soil depths than those from small seeds.  相似文献

The Cape Peninsula (area: 471 km2), situated at the south-western extremity of the Cape Floristic Region, has exceptionally high plant species richness (2285 species and infraspecific taxa) and numbers of endemic (90; 88 species and two infraspecific) and threatened (141; 138 species and three infraspecific) taxa (termed species from here on). This biodiversity is threatened by urban development and the spread of invasive alien plants. Peninsula endemics are concentrated in a few, predominantly species-rich families and these correspond well with endemic-rich families in other areas of the Cape Floristic Region. A high level of similarity exists between families with threatened and families with endemic species. A frequency analysis of the biological traits of both endemic and threatened species shows that low growing, ant-dispersed shrubs are over-represented in both groups. Endemics are most likely to be non-sprouters, but threatened plants do not have a specific post-fire regeneration strategy. Threatened species have higher frequencies of geophytes, sprouters and wind-dispersed species compared to endemic species. Numbers of endemic and threatened species are not randomly distributed with regard to occurrence in vegetation types and patterns are similar for both groups. The habitat and biological profiles of both endemic and threatened species suggest that they are highly vulnerable to extinction as a result of increasing rates of alien plant infestation, urbanization and inappropriate fire regimes.  相似文献

A survey of the size and form of the midgut caeca in relation to diet has been carried out on 173 species from 21 families and subfamilies of Acridoidea (grasshoppers). Although differences exist in the size of the anterior caecal arms relative to body length, these differences are not related to the type of food eaten. Assuming that the anterior arms have a key role in digestive and absorptive processes, this suggests that different foods make similar demands on these processes. The posterior caecal arms are smaller in graminivorous species than in species eating other types of plants as a whole or part of their diet. This is true across all the taxa, including those families and subfamilies that are predominantly forb-feeding. It is suggested that the posterior caecal arms have a special role in the detoxification of plant secondary compounds and that the requirement for this is reduced in graminivorous species because of the lower levels of toxic secondary compounds in grasses. A specialized pocket region is present in the posterior caecal arms of some forb-feeding species. Its occurrence across the taxa is spasmodic. It may be concerned with the removal of phenolic compounds.  相似文献

Use of ri-mediated transformation for production of transgenic plants   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
Summary Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation has been used to obtain transgenic plants in 89 different taxa, representing 79 species from 55 genera and 27 families. A diverse range of dicotyledonous plant families is represented, including one Gymnosperm family. In addition to the Ri plasmid, over half these plants have been transformed with foreign genes, including agronomically useful traits. Plants regenerated from hairy roots often show altered plant morphology such as dwarfing, increased rooting, altered flowering, wrinkled leaves and/or increased branching due to rol gene expression. These altered phenotypic features can have potential applications for plant improvement especially in the horticultural industry where such morphological alterations may be desirable. Use of A. rhizogenes and rol gene transformation has tremendous potential for genetic manipulation of plants and has been of particular benefit for improvement of ornamental and woody plants.  相似文献

Nuclear DNA Amounts in Angiosperms and their Modern Uses--807 New Estimates   总被引:14,自引:4,他引:10  
The DNA amount in the unreplicated haploid nucleus of an organismis known as its C-value. C-values differ about 1000-fold amongangiosperms and are characteristic of taxa. The data are usedin many biological fields, so they should be easily available.Values for 2802 angiosperm species (1%) were estimated during1950–1997, and five collected lists of C-values were publishedfor reference purposes during 1976–1997. Numbers of newangiosperm C-values published recently remained high, necessitatinga further supplementary list. This paper lists DNA C-valuesfor 807 angiosperm species from 70 original sources, including520 (75.2%) from sources published after 1996, and 691 for speciesnot included in any of the previous five lists. There is a continuingneed to estimate accurate DNA C-values for plant taxa, as shownin a workshop on this biodiversity topic sponsored by Annalsof Botany and held at Kew in 1997. Its key aim was to identifymajor gaps in our knowledge of plant DNA amounts and to recommendtargets and priorities for new work to fill them. A target ofestimating first C-values for the next 1% of angiosperm speciesin 5 years was set. The proportion of such C-values in the presentwork (85.6%) is very high; and the number being published (approx.220 per annum) has never been exceeded. In 1997, C-values werestill unknown for most (68%) families, so a target of completecoverage was set. Modern agricultural practices pose serious threats to biodiversity worldwide. Species losses from habitat conversion are well documented, but indirect impacts such as reduced water availability to adjacent ecosystems are less known. San Quintín is an important agricultural valley in the mediterranean climate region of Baja California, Mexico. The region is also a hotspot of plant species richness and endemism. Plant species in the region are here analyzed by comparison of the contemporary flora to historical botanical collections to identify extirpations. Historical collections indicate that habitat loss to agriculture has been a direct cause of species losses. As importantly, the unsustainable extraction of groundwater has apparently led to salt water intrusion, resulting in the loss of 22 native plant taxa, including 13 rare plants. Seventy-eight percent of all the vernal pool taxa have been lost from the flora (including 85 % of the rare taxa) and 11 % of plants of riparian and pond habitat (including 25 % of the rare taxa) are no longer found in the region. Unsustainable agricultural practices continue to threaten fragile coastal ecosystems and are a serious challenge to current and future conservation efforts. Ironically, these same practices frequently result in abandonment of cultivated areas. Owing to indirect impacts, conservation of biodiversity and large-scale agricultural operations are even less compatible on a regional scale than indicated by direct impacts. It is vital that sustainable agricultural practices be adopted locally and globally to avoid further losses of biodiversity.  相似文献

1. The megadiverse herbivores and their host plants are a major component of biodiversity, and their interactions have been hypothesised to drive the diversification of both. 2. If plant diversity influences the diversity of insects, there is an expectation that insect species richness will be strongly correlated with host‐plant species richness. This should be observable at two levels (i) more diverse host‐plant groups should harbour more species of insects, and (ii) the species richness of a group of insects should correlate with the richness of the host groups it uses. However, such a correlation is also consistent with a hypothesis of random host use, in which insects encounter and use hosts in proportion to the diversity of host plants. Neither of these expectations has been widely tested. 3. These expectations were tested using data from a species‐rich group of insects – the Coccidae (Hemiptera). 4. Significant positive correlations were found between the species richness of coccid clades (genera) and the species richness of the host‐plant family or families upon which the clades occur. On a global scale, more closely related plant families have more similar communities of coccid genera but the correlation is weak. 5. Random host use could not be rejected for many coccids but randomisation tests and similarity of coccid communities on closely related plant families show that there is non‐random host use in some taxa. Overall, our results support the idea that plant diversity is a driver of species richness of herbivorous insects, probably via escape‐and‐radiate or oscillation‐type processes.  相似文献
