Although numerous studies have documented changes in the behavior of nonhuman primate females around the time of ovulation, very little attention has been paid to behavior changes around the time of menstruation. Yet such information is obviously relevant to under standing the origins and etiology of the adverse mood and behavior changes experienced premenstrually by many women. Analysis of data obtained during 115 hours of observation on 13 female Amboseli (Kenya) baboons (Papio cynocephalus) during 24 menstrual periods showed that prior to and during the time of menstrual onset, these individuals exhibited distinct changes in their activity budgets, nearest-neighbor distances, and patterns of social interaction. Furthermore, in comparison to females around the time of ovulation, perimenstrual females showed increased rates of agonistic interaction and decreased (but nonzero) rates of sexual interaction with adult males. These premenstrual and perimenstrual behavior changes among female yellow baboons thus show some intriguing similarities to several commonly reported behavioral symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in women. 相似文献

Automated tracking using a satellite global position system (GPS) has major potential as a research tool in studies of primate ecology. However, implementation has been limited, at least partly because of technological difficulties associated with the dense forest habitat of many primates. In contrast, primates inhabiting relatively open environments may provide ideal subjects for use of GPS collars, yet no empirical tests have evaluated this proposition. Here, we used an automated GPS collar to record the locations, approximate body surface temperature, and activity for an adult female baboon during 90 days in the savannah habitat of Amboseli, Kenya. Given the GPS collar's impressive reliability, high spatial accuracy, other associated measurements, and low impact on the study animal, our results indicate the great potential of applying GPS technology to research on wild primates. 相似文献

Over 23 months, zinc toxicosis was diagnosed in 35 baboons aged 5-12 months in one galvanized metal and concrete cage complex with conditions that led to excessive exposure to environmental zinc. Clinical signs included reduced pigmentation of hair, skin, and mucous membranes (whiteness), alopecia, dehydration, emaciation, cachexia, dermatitis, diarrhea and, in six cases, severe gangrenous dermatitis of extremities. The syndrome was characterized by pancytopenia, elevated zinc and low copper serum concentrations, low vitamin D and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase levels, and atypical myelomonocytic proliferation of bone marrow. This syndrome emphasizes the importance of proper husbandry and cage design and indicates the potential of infant baboons as a model to study the effects of excessive zinc on development. This is the first report describing the epidemiologic and clinical presentation of zinc toxicosis in infant baboons in captivity. 相似文献

Naturally occurring admixture has now been documented in every major primate lineage, suggesting its key role in primate evolutionary history. Active primate hybrid zones can provide valuable insight into this process. Here, we investigate the history of admixture in one of the best‐studied natural primate hybrid zones, between yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) and anubis baboons (Papio anubis) in the Amboseli ecosystem of Kenya. We generated a new genome assembly for yellow baboon and low‐coverage genomewide resequencing data from yellow baboons, anubis baboons and known hybrids (n = 44). Using a novel composite likelihood method for estimating local ancestry from low‐coverage data, we found high levels of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation between the parent taxa, and excellent agreement between genome‐scale ancestry estimates and a priori pedigree, life history and morphology‐based estimates (r2 = 0.899). However, even putatively unadmixed Amboseli yellow individuals carried a substantial proportion of anubis ancestry, presumably due to historical admixture. Further, the distribution of shared vs. fixed differences between a putatively unadmixed Amboseli yellow baboon and an unadmixed anubis baboon, both sequenced at high coverage, is inconsistent with simple isolation–migration or equilibrium migration models. Our findings suggest a complex process of intermittent contact that has occurred multiple times in baboon evolutionary history, despite no obvious fitness costs to hybrids or major geographic or behavioural barriers. In combination with the extensive phenotypic data available for baboon hybrids, our results provide valuable context for understanding the history of admixture in primates, including in our own lineage. 相似文献

In order to evaluate serum copper and zinc status in children with iron deficiency anemia (IDA), 60 children with IDA aged
1–14 yr and 64 healthy children as controls aged 1–14 yr were included the study. Serum copper levels were higher in children
with IDA (189 ± 49 (Μg/dL) than those of controls (163 ± 37 Μg/dL) (p = 0.001). Serum zinc levels were lower in the patient group (109 ± 59 Μg/dL) than those of control subjects (135 ± 56 Μg/dL)
(p = 0.017). In addition, there were statistically significant negative correlations between hematological parameters and serum
copper levels in the patient group, but not in controls. No correlation between hematological parameters and serum zinc levels
were found in both patient and control groups, except positive correlation between mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and serum
zinc level in patients.
It was concluded that at the time of managing children with IDA, zinc deficiency must be borne in mind and if necessary treatment

In the current study, the effects of marginal Zn deficiency on myelin protein profiles in neonatal rats and rhesus monkeys
were investigated. Following mating, rats were fed a Zn-adequate diet,ad libitum (50 μg Zn/g; 50 Zn AL), or a marginal Zn diet (10 μg Zn/g) from day 0 (10 Zn d0) or day 14 (10 Zn d14) of gestation to day
20 postnatal. An additional group of dams was restricted-fed the control diet to the food intake of the 10 Zn d0 group (50
Zn RF). Day 20 pup plasma and liver Zn concentrations in the 10 Zn groups were lower than in the 50 Zn groups. In a parallel
experiment, rhesus monkeys were fed a Zn-adequatead libitum diet (100 μg Zn/g) or a marginal Zn diet (4 μg Zn/g diet; MZD) throughout gestation and lactation. Day 30 monkey infant plasma
and liver Zn levels were similar in the MZD and control groups. Rat brain and monkey brain cortex weights were similar among
the dietary groups. The amount of myelin recovered (mg protein/g brain) from day 20 rat pups from the 10 Zn groups was lower
than that recovered from the 50 Zn rat pups. Myelin recovery from the MZD and control monkey infants was similar. When myelin
protein profiles were characterized, it was found that the percentages of high-molecular-weight (HMW) proteins and Wolfgram
protein were higher, whereas the percentages of small and large basic proteins were lower in myelin from the 10 Zn d0 and
50 Zn RF pups compared to the distribution in the 50 Zn AL rat pups. Results for the 10 Zn d0 and 10 Zn d14 pups were similar
for all of the parameters studied. The percentage of HMW proteins was higher and that of basic protein lower in myelin from
MZD monkey infants compared to the percentage of these proteins in myelin from controls. Although the interpretation of the
rat data is complicated because of the anorexia associated with the Zn deficiency, the observed changes in monkey myelin protein
profiles provide strong evidence that maternal Zn deficiency affects myelination in the offspring. 相似文献

Regional distribution of metallothionein, zinc, and copper in the brain of different strains of rats 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The regional brain distribution of metallothionein (MT), zinc, and copper in the brain was determined in nine anatomical regions
(olfactory bulb, cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, thalamus plus hypothalamus, pons plus medulla oblongata, cerebellum,
midbrain, and white matter) and was compared between two different strains of rat (Sprague-Dawley [SD] and Lewis). No significant
difference was observed in the whole-brain MT level between the two strains (17.8 ± 3.4 μg/g in SD rats and 20.3 ± 2.3 μg/g
in Lewis rats). In SD rats, however, MT was more highly expressed in the white matter than in the other regions studied. In
contrast, MT concentration was highest in the cortex and lowest in the olfactory bulb in Lewis rats. The MT levels in the
cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, and thalamus plus hypothalamus were significantly lower in SD rats than in Lewis rats.
In both strains, the olfactory bulb contained markedly higher levels of both zinc and copper than the other regions (27.9
±6.8 μg/g zinc in SD rats and 27.6 ± 6.9 μg/g zinc in Lewis rats, and 5.2 ± 1.5 μg/g copper in SD rats and 11.1 ± 4.8 μg/g
copper in Lewis rats). The next high-est zinc levels were seen in the hippocampus, whereas the next highest copper levels
were in the corpus striatum in both SD and Lewis rats. The high levels of zinc and copper in the olfactory bulb were not accompanied
by concomitant high MT concentrations. These results indicate that the strain of rat as well as the anatomical brain region
should be taken into account in MT and metal distribution studies. However, the highest concentrations of zinc and copper
in olfactory bulb were common to both SD and Lewis rats. The discrepancy between MT and the metal levels in olfactory bulb
suggests a role for other proteins in addition to MT in the homeostatic control of zinc and copper. 相似文献

In the present study, the serum and hair levels of zinc, selenium, and copper were determined in children with iron-deficiency
anemia (IDA). A total of 52 anemic children aged 1–4 yr constituted the study group. Fortysix healthy children acted as controls.
The copper and zinc levels were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophometer. Serum and hair selenium was determined
by a spectroflourometric method. The serum zinc and selenium concentrations in the IDA group were found to be significantly
lower and serum copper significantly higher than those in the controls (p<0.05). Lower iron, zinc, and selenium concentrations (p<0.001) but not copper were found in hair (p>0.05). 相似文献

A copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) was inserted transabdominally into the uterine cavity of eight Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata) for 4 to 6 months, and effects on various organ functions were examined. Results showed no significant effects on the menstrual cycle length, serum levels of LH, estradiol-17 beta, progesterone or clinical biochemical data such as serum copper, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, and blood urea nitrogen. In the estuaries near Falmouth (Cornwall, UK) levels of dissolved copper and zinc are high, due to drainage of copper and tin mines. Phytoplankton species composition in the autumn of 1989 deviated in the metal-contaminated Restronguet Creek from that in other estuarine branches,viz. Fal, Tresillian and Percuil. In the riverine part of Restronguet Creek (Carnon River)Euglena mutabilis, known as an acidophilic (pH 3) metal-resistant flagellate, occurred at micromolar Cu and Zn, whereas in the clean riversChlamydomonas sp. andOocystis sp. occurred at nanomolar Cu and Zn. An ordination analysis revealed the following patterns in Cu, Zn and phytoplankton species composition in the poly- and euhaline waters. Seston-bound Zn and dissolved Zn were in equilibrium,Katodinium rotundatum is Zn-tolerant, andSkeletonema costatum occurred in water with high contents of Cu in seston. However, none of the variables in these patterns correlated at a significant level (p>0.05). The hypothesis was tested that there are interactions of marginal copper and vitamin A deficiency regarding iron and zinc
status. Copper restriction (1 vs 5 mg Cu/kg diet) significantly lowered copper concentrations in plasma and tissues of rats
and reduced blood hemoglobin, hematocrit, and iron concentrations in tibia and femur, but raised iron concentrations in liver.
Vitamin A restriction (0 vs 4000 IU vitamin A/kg diet) reduced plasma retinol concentrations and induced a fall of blood hemoglobin
and hematocrit. Neither copper nor vitamin A restriction for up to 42 d affected feed intake and body wt gain. There were
no interrelated effects of vitamin A and copper deficiency on iron status. Copper deficiency slightly depressed liver, spleen,
and kidney zinc concentrations. Vitamin A deficiency lowered zinc concentrations in heart, but only when the diets were deficient

To evaluate the species specificity of Cd accumulation and the relationship of Cd with other essential metals and metallothionein
(MT), the concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Fe in the liver and kidney and the MT concentrations in the soluble fractions
of the liver and kidney were determined in Cd-uncontaminated nonhuman primates (11 species, 26 individuals) kept in a zoo
and two wild-caught Japanese macaques. The compositions of metal-binding proteins in the soluble fractions were also investigated
by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The hepatic Cd concentration was 0.03–14.0 μg/g and the renal Cd concentration was 0.35–99.0 μg/g, both varying greatly and being higher in nonhuman primates, which were more closely related to man. The hepatic Zn concentration
was 24.0–176 μg/g and the renal Zn concentration was 13.5–138 μg/g, showing 7- to 10-fold differences, and a correlation (r=0.558, p<0.01) was found between renal Zn and renal Cd concentrations.
It was proved that in the liver, MT is more closely correlated with Zn (r=0.795, p<0.001) than with Cd (r=0.492, p<0.01) and that in the kidney MT is correlated with both Cd (r=0.784, p<0.001) and Zn (r=0.742, p<0.001). HPLC analysis of metals bound to MT-like protein in chimpanzees, de Brazza’s monkeys, and Bolivian squirrel monkeys
showed that more than 90% of Cd in both the liver and kidney, approx 40% of Zn in liver and 28–69% of Zn in kidney were bound
to MT-like protein. The higher percentage Zn was bound to high-molecular protein. 相似文献

To clarify the changes of mineral levels in different tissues of riboflavin-deficient rats, Wistar rats were separated into
three groups. One group was fed a diet ad libitum that was deficient in riboflavin. The other two were fed either the complete
diet that was weight-matched to the riboflavin-deficient group or fed a complete diet ad libitum. In riboflavin-deficient
rats, the hemoglobin concentration and riboflavin contents of blood, liver, and kidney were significantly decreased, compared
with weight-matched and ad libitum-fed controls. The mineral concentrations of tissues are summarized as follows: The iron
(Fe) concentration in the heart, liver, and spleen was decreased in the riboflavin-deficient group compared with the other
groups. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations in tibia were decreased in the riboflavin-deficient group compared
with the other two groups. Copper (Cu) concentration was increased in the heart and liver when the riboflavin-deficient group
was compared with the other groups. Zinc (Zn) concentration was increased in tibia when the riboflavin-deficient group was

Cultured cells of a variety of different types from human Menkes' syndrome patients and brindled mouse mutants exhibit similarly altered responses to changes in extracellular copper concentration. This suggests that the mutations in the mouse and human are very similar and that mutant gene expression is occurring in many different tissues. Intracellular copper levels are markedly elevated in mutant cells in normal medium and in medium containing a hundredfold higher copper. Some cell lines from heterozygotes possess elevated copper levels. Elevated extracellular copper and zinc are significantly more toxic to mutant cells. Mutant cells exhibit normal rates of uptake of copper-64 over a 10-min period but abnormally high accumulation over 24 hr and low rates of efflux. Menkes' fibroblasts become saturated with copper-64 at lower extracellular concentrations than for normal fibroblasts. The frequency of zinc deficiency, copper toxicity and low zinc/copper in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) may indicate decrement in metallothionein system functioning. A retrospective review of plasma zinc, serum copper and zinc/copper was performed on data from 230 children with autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-NOS and Asperger’s syndrome. The entire cohort’s mean zinc level was 77.2 μg dl?1, mean copper level was 131.5 μg dl?1, and mean Zn/Cu was 0.608, which was below the 0.7 cut-off of the lowest 2.5% of healthy children. The plasma zinc/serum copper ratio may be a biomarker of heavy metal, particularly mercury, toxicity in children with ASDs. 相似文献

Although endemic goiter has been shown to have a high prevalence in Turkey, little is known about the concentration of urinary
iodine, plasma selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in these patients. We studied on 140 male patient with endemic goiter
(mean age: 22.2 ± 0.19 yr) and 140 healthy male subjects (mean age: 21.8 ± 0.28 yr). Daily urinary iodine excretion was determined
by the ionometric method. Plasma Se, Zn, and Cu were determined by using atomic absorption spectrometry. Daily urinary iodine
excretion was found to be significantly lower in the patient group (38.7 ± 2.26 μg/d) than that of controls (50.73 ± 2.56
μg/day,p = 0.001). Plasma Zn concentrations were also found to be significantly lower in the patient group (1.04 ± 0.03 μg/mL) than
that of controls (1.16 ± 0.02 μg/mL,p = 0.001). No significant difference was determined in Se and Cu concentrations between the patient and control groups. Our
study shows that a moderate iodine deficiency exists in both patients with endemic goiter and control subjects, which indicates
the important role of iodine deficiency in the etiopathogenesis of endemic goiter in Turkey. Zinc deficiency may also contribute
to the pathogenesis of endemic goiter. However, Se and Cu do not seem to have any role in the etiopathogenesis of endemic
goiter in Turkey. A community-based iodine fortification program throughout the country may be proposed to take over the problem,
which also can prevent the contributing effects of other element deficiencies that occur when iodine deficiency is the prevailing
