The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oils obtained from wild Sicilian rosemary plants (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) has been investigated. Samples were collected in Sicily after an ideal division of the island into three large areas, namely Val Mazara (M), Val di Noto (N) and Val Demona (D), according to an ancient and historical territorial subdivision of the island. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID-MS, identifying 100 compounds representing more than 96% of the oils. Monoterpenes, both hydrocarbons and oxygenated, were the most highly represented components: the former with a range of 21–68% and the latter with a range of 29–79%. On the basis of the results of this study, comprising a cluster analysis, and on the commonly accepted subdivision of rosemary essential oils, namely cineoliferum, verbenoniferum and camphoriferum chemotypes, most of the wild Sicilian rosemary samples must be classified as cineoliferum chemotype. 相似文献

Samples were collected from three areas of Sicily namely Val Mazara (M), Val di Noto (N) and Val Demona (D). These areas are based on historical territorial subdivision. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID-MS. Seventy eight compounds were identified representing more than 98% of the compounds in the oils. All samples are thymol-chemotype with variable percentage of γ-terpinene, p-cymene, trans-sabinene hydrate, terpinen-4-ol and carvacrol. Statistical analyses were performed in order to evaluate the variability of the essential oils. Thirty samples of wild thyme collected from as many Sicilian locations have been analysed for their qualitative and quantitative essential oil profiles. The oils, obtained by hydrodistillation, have been analysed by a combination of GC-FID-MS; in all, 46 components, representing more than 98% of the oils, were fully characterized. Monoterpenes, both hydrocarbons and oxygenated, were the most highly represented components: the former with a range of 8–61% and the latter with a range of 31–86%. Carvacrol was the main compound in 29 samples, ranging between 49 and 83%, suggesting that Thymus capitatus Hoff. et Link. [syn. Coridothymus capitatus (L.) Rchb.f., Satureja capitata L., Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav.] is the most widespread wild species in the Sicilian area. Only one sample, identified as Thymus longicaulis C. Presl., collected from the North-East of Sicily showed a different composition, p-cymene and thymol being the main compounds with 40 and 16%, respectively. Statistical analyses allowed establishing a single broad group, confirming the substantial compositional uniformity of the essential oil profiles of the wild Sicilian thyme. 相似文献

Trees from the genus Boswellia (Burseraceae) are traditionally used as a medicine, a fumigant, in various cosmetic formulations and in aromatherapy in several countries around the world. This plant produces a commercial oil known as frankincense which has a woody, spicy and haunting smell. Frankincense oil has several pharmacological properties, of which many elude to the anti-infective potential. Variation in the chemical composition of this oil has been reported in literature. These factors prompted an investigation to study the commercial frankincense oils from various international suppliers. Twenty essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Considering the major constituents, the oils were found to be qualitatively similar. However, there was immense quantitative variation for certain oil constituents. The components identified and their range in the oils include α-pinene (2.0–64.7%); α-thujene (0.3–52.4%); β-pinene (0.3–13.1%); myrcene (1.1–22.4%); sabinene (0.5–7.0%); limonene (1.3–20.4%); p-cymene (2.7–16.9%) and β-caryophyllene (0.1–10.5%). The antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibition concentration assay) of the oils was investigated against five reference test organisms and the activity ranged from 4–16 mg/ml (Staphylococcus aureus); 1.5–8.3 mg/ml (Bacillus cereus); 4.0–12.0 mg/ml (Escherichia coli); 2.0–12.8 mg/ml (Proteus vulgaris) and 5.3–12.0 mg/ml (Candida albicans). 相似文献

The essential oil of Scutellaria barbata was obtained by hydrodistillation with a 0.3% (v/w) yield and analysed by GC and GC-MS. The main compounds in the oil were hexahydrofarnesylacetone (11.0%), 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol (7.8%), menthol (7.7%) and 1-octen-3-ol (7.1%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated against 17 microorganisms using disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphlococcus aureus, were more sensitive to the oil than gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. 相似文献

The volatile phenylpropenes estragole and t-anethole are the major constituents of the oleoresin of the aerial parts of bitter fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill. var. vulgare, Apiaceae). The levels of estragole and t-anethole varied during plant development, being maximal in flowers and developing mericarps. Still the ratio between estragole and t-anethole remained constant throughout development. Estragole-rich types were hybridized with t-anethole rich types to examine the genetic basis of this polymorphism. A reverse correlation between estragole and t-anethole content was evident and the action of a biallelic gene with partial dominance for high estragole content was inferred. Understanding phenylpropene inheritance might explain chemical polymorphism in wild bitter fennel populations, sheds light on the molecular mechanisms that lead to chemotypes evolution and is crucial for breeding fennel varieties with desired chemical compositions. 相似文献

Cardiovascular effects of the essential oil of Croton zehntneri (EOCZ) were investigated in conscious rats. In these preparations, intravenous (i.v.) injections of EOCZ (1-20 mg kg(-1)) and its main constituents anethole and estragole (both at 1-10 mg kg(-1)) elicited brief and dose-dependent hypotension and bradycardia (phase I) that were followed by a significant pressor effect associated with a delayed bradycardia (phase II). The initial hypotension and bradycardia (phase I) of EOCZ were unchanged by atenolol (1.5 mg kg(-1), i.v.) or L-NAME (20 mg kg(-1), i.v.) pretreatment, but were respectively reversed into pressor and tachycardic effects by methylatropine (1 mg kg(-1), i.v.) pretreatment. The subsequent pressor effect and the delayed bradycardia (phase II) remained unaffected by atenolol, but were abolished by L-NAME and methylatropine pretreatment, respectively. In rat endothelium-containing aorta preparations, the vasoconstrictor responses to phenylephrine were enhanced and reduced, respectively, by the lower (1-30 microg mL(-1)) and higher (300-1000 microg mL(-1)) concentrations of EOCZ. Only the enhancement of phenylephrine-induced contraction was abolished by either the incubation with L-NAME (50 microM) or in the absence of the endothelium. These data show, for the first time, that i.v. administration EOCZ induces an initial hypotension followed by a pressor response, two effects that appear mainly attributed to the actions of anethole and estragole. The EOCZ-induced hypotension (phase I) is mediated by a cholinergic mechanism and seems to result mainly from the concomitant bradycardia. The pressor response of EOCZ (phase II) seems to be caused by an indirect vasoconstrictive action of EOCZ most likely through inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide production. 相似文献

The essential oil of aerial parts of Ruta graveolens was obtained by hydrodistillation with a 0.74% yield on a dry weight basis. Thirty-eight components were identified by GC and GC-MS analyses. 2-Ketones predominated in the essential oil, with undecan-2-one (46.8%) and nonan-2-one (18.8%) as the main constituents. The essential oil and some of its constituents were tested for their allelopathic activity in vitro on radish germination and radicle growth in light and darkness. The essential oil and some of its minor constituents were effective and dose-dependent inhibitors of both the germination and radicle growth; 2-ketones are not active. The possible allelopathic activity of rue essential oil and some its isolated constituents is reported. 相似文献

A detailed analysis of Rhaponticum carthamoides (Willd.) Iljin root essential oil was carried out by GC, GC-MS and GC-FTIR techniques. In total, 30 components were identified, accounting for 98.0% of total volatiles. A norsesquiterpene 13-norcypera-1(5),11(12)-diene (22.6%), followed by aplotaxene (21.2%) and cyperene (17.9%), were isolated and their structures confirmed by 1D and 2D-NMR spectra (COSY, ROESY, HSQC, HMBC and INADEQUATE). Selinene type sesquiterpenes and aliphatic hydrocarbons were among minor constituents of the essential oil. The oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against 5 of 9 strains of bacteria and yeast, when tested using broth micro-dilution method. Minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged between 32 and 256 μg/ml. 相似文献

Fresh aerial parts of Angelica glauca, growing wild in Kashmir valley in higher Himalaya (Jammu and Kashmir, India), collected at flowering stage from different locations, on hydro-distillation provided a refreshing light pale coloured essential oil with characteristic floral woody flavour. The oil was found to be a complex mixture of mono- and sesquiterpenes and 34 compounds accounting for nearly 97.4% of the oil were characterized with the help of capillary GC, GC-MS, and NMR. Major compounds of the oil were characterized as alpha-phellandrene (13.5%), trans-carveol (12.0%), beta-pinene (11.7%), thujene (7.5%), beta-caryophyllene oxide (7.2%), beta-caryophyllene (7.0%), gamma-terpinene (6.7%), nerolidol (6.5%), beta-bisabolene (5.2%) and germacrene D (4.5%). Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), one of the most popular aromatic plants, shows great variation in both morphology and essential oil components. In this study, the composition of 18 Turkish basil essential oils was investigated by GC and GC–MS. Variation of essential oils in the landraces was subjected to cluster analysis, and seven different chemotypes were identified. They were (1) linalool, (2) methyl cinnamate, (3) methyl cinnamate/linalool, (4) methyl eugenol, (5) citral, (6) methyl chavicol (estragol), and (7) methyl chavicol/citral. Methyl chavicol with high citral contents (methyl chavicol/citral) can be considered as a “new chemotype” in the Turkish basils. Because methyl eugenol and methyl chavicol have structural resemblance to carcinogenic phenylpropanoids, chemotypes having high linalool, methyl cinnamate or citral contents and a mixture of these is suitable to cultivate for use in industry. 相似文献

The essential oils of Guatteriopsis blepharophylla, Guatteriopsis friesiana and Guatteriopsis hispida were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC/MS. The main compound found in the leaf oil of G. blepharophylla was caryophyllene oxide (1) (69.25%). The leaf oil of G. friesiana contained predominantly beta-eudesmol (2) (51.60%), gamma-eudesmol (3) (23.70%), and alpha-eudesmol (4) (14.56%). The major constituents identified in the leaf of G. hispida were beta-pinene (38.18%), alpha-pinene (30.77%) and (E)-caryophyllene (20.59%). The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was evaluated against 11 species of microorganisms. The oil of G. friesiana exhibited significant antimicrobial activity for all microorganisms tested, whereas that of G. hispida and G. blepharophyla had potent activity against Rhodococcus equi with MIC of 50 microg mL(-1). The major constituents of each oil were also tested separately, and showed lower activity compared to the oils. Moreover, mixtures of the main constituents, in the same proportions found in G. friesiana and G. hispida oils, did not show the same activity as the original oils. 相似文献

Volatile oils of Eremophila longifolia F. Muell. (Myoporaceae) leaves were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed using GC-MS. A total of 33 compounds were identified in the oils examined and a high degree of intraspecific variability in chemical composition between specimens occurring in separate geographic localities was found. Analysis of the essential oil of the liverwort Radula perrottetii afforded two novel viscidane diterpenes, viscida-3,9,14-triene (1), viscida-3,11(18),14-triene (2), four bisabolane sesquiterpenes, bisabola-2,6,11-triene (3), bisabola-1,3,5,7(14),11-pentaene (4), bisabola-1,3,5,7,11-pentaene (5), 6,7-epoxybisabola-2,11-diene (6), and 1-methoxy-4-(2-methylpropenyl)benzene (7) as new natural products. In addition, the known compounds bisabola-1,3,5,7(14),10-pentaene (8), ar-tenuifolene (9), alpha-helmiscapene (10), and beta-helmiscapene (11) were also isolated. Isolation was carried out by preparative gas chromatography, and the structures were established by extensive NMR analysis. This is the first finding of viscidane diterpenes in liverworts. Compounds 8, 9 and the rarely encountered eudesmane sesquiterpene hydrocarbons 10 and 11 are reported for the first time from R. perrottetii. 相似文献

Available ethnobotanical information on Pteronia onobromoides (first recorded in 1685) indicates that the plant was once of considerable cultural and commercial importance and that it was powdered, mixed with fat, and applied to the skin for cosmetic and/or medicinal purposes. Sâb, as well as Son or San, are considered to be the original Nama names for this aromatic bush and also the origin of various names for San people, such as Sonqua and Bushman. A study of the leaf anatomy showed that essential oil is produced in globose oil glands situated below some of the vascular bundles in the spongy parenchyma, adjacent to the palisade parenchyma. The oil is relatively complex but contains a combination of myrcene, limonene, 1,8-cineole and p-cymene as main compounds, with smaller amounts of sabinene, trans-linalooloxide, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, eugenol, thymol and α-phellandrene. Dichloromethane extracts exhibited antibacterial activity (especially against Staphylococcus epidermidis) with MIC values as low as 0.83 mg/ml. Other solvent extracts and the essential oil itself were less active. The results show that the traditional method of mixing powdered leaves with fat and applying it to the skin may have had deodorant, disinfectant and medicinal benefits. 相似文献

The essential oil profile of maca (Lepidium meyenii) obtained from Lima, Peru, was examined. Steam distillates of the aerial parts of L. meyenii were continuously extracted with pentane and the pentane extracts analyzed by GC/MS. Retention indices and mass spectral data were used to identify 53 oil components. Phenyl acetonitrile (85.9%), benzaldehyde (3.1%), and 3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile (2.1%) were the major components of the steam distilled oil. The oil of L. meyenii was tested for phytotoxic, cyanobactericidal, and antitermite activity. The oil was selectively toxic towards the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata compared to the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum, with complete growth inhibition at 100 microg/ml. Mortality of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus, was numerically, but not significantly, higher when held on filter paper treated with maca oil. At 1% (w/w), maca oil also appeared to act as a feeding deterrent to termites. Several minor components of the essential oil of maca including 3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile and benzylthiocyanate were significantly active against the Formosan termite. The essential oils of air-dried Centaurea sessilis and Centaurea armena obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Forty and twenty components were identified in the essential oils and the main component of these taxons was beta-eudesmol in the ratios of 12.4% and 19.3% from C. sessilis and C. armena, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the isolated essential oil of the plants was also investigated. They showed moderate antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but no antifungal activity was observed against two yeastlike fungi. 相似文献

Twenty components extracted from the essential oil in the leaves of 172 samples of Perilla frutescens var. crispa (vegetable crop form), P. frutescens var. frutescens (oil crop form), the wild/weedy form of P. frutescens, and three wild Perilla species, Perilla citriodora, Perilla hirtella and Perilla setoyensis were analyzed using GC/MS. A wide range of essential oil components were found among the wild/weedy form of P. frutescens, whereas distinctive components were detected in each wild Perilla species. Egomaketone, asaron, methyleugenol and 4,6-dimethoxy- or 4,7-dimethoxy-5-(2-propenyl)-1,3-dioxaindan were detected from Perilla for the first time. Limonene derivatives, piperitone and piperitenone, were detected from P. citriodora. Discovery of the limonene derivatives in this Perilla species provides evidence of this wild species being a genome donor of P. frutescens, while limonene synthase has been considered to be a specific enzyme in cultivated P. frutescens. These results will be useful for the evaluation and utilization of Perilla genetic resources. 相似文献

The leaf essential oils of 10 species of Ocotea (Lauraceae) from Monteverde, Costa Rica (Ocotea floribunda, Ocotea holdridgeana, Ocotea meziana, Ocotea sinuata, Ocotea tonduzii, Ocotea valeriana, Ocotea veraguensis, Ocotea whitei, and two undescribed species, Ocotea new species “los llanos”, and Ocotea new species “small leaf”) have been obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC–MS in order to discern the differences and similarities between the volatile chemical compositions of these species.
