The Phylogeny and Classification of Tapiromorph Perissodactyls (Mammalia)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Despite an excellent fossil record, the phylogeny of Perissodactyla is not well understood, in terms of both the relationships within Perissodactyla and the position of the Perissodactyla among the orders of mammals. This paper provides a phylogenetic analysis of one major perissodactyl lineage, the Tapiromorpha. This analysis combines a more comprehensive sampling of characters and taxa with rigorous tree-searching methods to create a new hypothesis of tapiromorph relationships. The phylogeny of tapiromorph perissodactyls is analyzed using 45 characters of the skull, postcranial skeleton, and dentition scored for 29 taxa, including three nontapiromorph outgroups. Phylogenetic taxonomic definitions are constructed for suprageneric taxa. According to the results of this analysis, the Chalicotherioidea cannot be unequivocally assigned to the Tapiromorpha, nor can Homogalax or Cardiolophus. Isectolophus , Tapiroidea, and Rhinocerotoidea are unequivocal members of the Tapiromorpha. Heptodon is included in a monophyletic Tapiroidea. Amynodontid rhinocerotoids come out as the sister group to rhinocerotids, and indricotheres do not fall within the Hyracodontidae. The results of this study provide further arguments that tapiromorphs (and putative tapiromorphs) may be important for understanding the ancestral morphology of Perissodactyla.  相似文献

Summary Quantitative ultrastructural morphometric studies were made on the prolactin cells of Poecilia latipinna adapted to freshwater (FW), one-third seawater (1/3 SW) and full-strength seawater (SW), and at various times after transfers between 1/3 SW and FW.In fully-adapted fish the rates of prolactin (PRL) synthesis and PRL release are inversely related to environmental salinity. During adaptation to a new salinity the two rates are temporarily uncoordinated, with release increasing or decreasing more readily than synthesis. Synthesis appears to take 30 h or longer to come into balance with the increased release rate following transfer from 1/3 SW to FW, and 72 h or longer to adjust to the reduction in release rate that follows the reverse transfer. The excess PRL granules that accumulate in the latter situation appear to be removed by lysosomal digestion. As in other teleosts, in fish adapted to the external medium the size of the stored PRL granules is inversely related to external salinity, but this relationship breaks down during adaptation to a new salinity.The stellate cells which penetrate between the PRL cells are more prominent, more extensively ramified, and appear more metabolically active in FW-adapted fish than in the other groups. ABSTRACT. Three new species of fossil Anisoptera (dragonflies) are reported from Tiffanian (Late Palaeocene) sediments of the Paskapoo Formation, near Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The three species are all assigned to the new genus Alloaeschna , which is classified in the subfamily Gomphaeschninae.
Phylogenetic analysis of gomphaeschnine wing venation suggests that the subfamily is paraphyletic, with derived gomphaeschnines such as Boyeria and Linaeschna more closely related to the Brachytroninae and Aeshninae than are other gomphaeschnines. One of the most primitive gomphaeschnines, and the oldest fossil form, is the Jurassic Morbaeschna. Parallelism, convergence and reversal in the evolution of features of the wing venation is common.
The new genus Alloaeschna is at about the same evolutionary grade as the old-world genus Oligoaeschna and the new-world genus Gomphaeschna , and is one of the more primitive known members of the Gomphaeschninae. The new species are the first recorded Palaeocene gomphaeschnines and the oldest known gomphaeschnines from the Americas.
Several extant genera have fossil representatives on continents different from those on which they now survive, suggesting repeated crossing of land bridges and/or widespread ancestral species prior to the separation of the continents, and subsequent extinction leading to present relict distributions.  相似文献

The genus Pilgnmella , known from the medial Eocene of Pakistan and northwest India, is a primitive perissodactyl, not an artiodactyl as previously identified. Upper cheek teeth of Pilgrimella , when compared with those of primitive representatives of the Equoidea, Brontotherioidea, Chalicotherioidea, Tapirioidea and Rhinocerotoidea, suggest, however, that Pilgnmella cannot on present evidence be referred to any of the five accepted perissodactyl superfamilies. Pilgrimella may represent a short-lived and hitherto unknown perissodactyl lineage.  相似文献

Sea turtles (Chelonioidea) are a prominent group of modern marine reptiles whose early history is poorly understood. Analysis of exceptionally well preserved fossils of Bouliachelys suteri gen. et sp. nov. a large-bodied basal protostegid (primitive chelonioid) from the Early Cretaceous (Albian) of Australia, indicates that early sea turtles were both larger and more diverse than previously thought. The analysis implies at least five distinct sea turtle lineages existed around 100 million years ago. Currently, the postcranially primitive Ctenochelys and Toxochelys are interpreted as crown-group sea turtles closely related to living cheloniids (e.g. Chelonia); in contrast, the new phylogeny suggests that they are transitional (intermediate stem-taxa) between continental testudines and derived, pelagic chelonioids.  相似文献

Based on embryological and morphological evidence, Lophophorata was long considered to be the sister or paraphyletic stem group of Deuterostomia. By contrast, molecular data have consistently indicated that the three lophophorate lineages, Ectoprocta, Brachiopoda and Phoronida, are more closely related to trochozoans (annelids, molluscs and related groups) than to deuterostomes. For this reason, the lophophorate groups and Trochozoa were united to Lophotrochozoa. However, the relationships of the lophophorate lineages within Lophotrochozoa are still largely unresolved. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses were performed based on a dataset comprising 11,445 amino acid positions derived from 79 ribosomal proteins of 39 metazoan taxa including new sequences obtained from a brachiopod and a phoronid. These analyses show that the three lophophorate lineages are affiliated with trochozoan rather than deuterostome phyla. All hypotheses claiming that they are more closely related to Deuterostomia than to Protostomia can be rejected by topology testing. Monophyly of lophophorates was not recovered but that of Bryozoa including Ectoprocta and Entoprocta and monophyly of Brachiozoa including Brachiopoda and Phoronida were strongly supported. Alternative hypotheses that are refuted include (i) Brachiozoa as the sister group of Mollusca, (ii) ectoprocts as sister to all other Lophotrochozoa including Platyzoa, and (iii) ectoprocts as sister or to all other protostomes except chaetognaths.  相似文献

The nonmarine mammal fauna of the Maghreb region of north‐west Africa is related to that from three potential source areas: the northern Palaearctic (Europe and south‐west Asia; here referred to as the European fauna), subsaharan Africa (the African fauna) and the arid Palaearctic (Sahara Desert: the desert fauna). On the basis of geographical distribution patterns, this fauna divisible into two groups: the bats, whose affinities are most closely related to southern Europe and south‐west Asia, and nonflying species, most closely related to subsaharan Africa but with an appreciable northern Palaearctic element. These affinities are even more pronounced if desert fauna are removed from the analysis. The nonflying European fauna probably colonized via south‐west Asia and north Africa, rather than direct from western Europe. The results demonstrate that terrestrial habitat barriers are less of an impediment to dispersal, for all mammals except bats, than even narrow stretches of water. The fauna of the Maghreb may be undergoing faunal relaxation, following immigration from tropical Africa and south‐west Asia during mesic phases in the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene.  相似文献

A review of Schizopera Sars indicates that four species are so much more primitive in the antenna and leg setation that they should be removed to a new genus, Eoschizopera, which can be considered as a direct and immediate ancestor of Schizopera. A further, new, species is described in this new genus. The relationships within this branch of the family Diosaccidae are discussed and the scheme of family evolution proposed by Lang is modified to include Eoschizopera and other genera not considered by him (Goffinella, Protopsammotopa, Psammotopa, Actopsyllus, Balucopsylla, Schizoperoides). Actopsyllus hartmannorum Kunz is removed to a further new genus- Helmutkunzia.  相似文献

本文在研究高海拔锄足蟾的属间分类及分布规律的基础上,对所属的齿蟾属Oreolalax、齿突蟾属Scutiger的齿突蟾亚属Scutiger,(Scutiger)和猫眼蟾亚属Scutiger(Aelurophryne)的成体外形和骨骼、蝌蚪的形态以及核型等24个性状进行综合分析,同时探讨了属间亲缘关系。结果表明:齿蟾属较原始,齿突蟾属较特化,它们可能起源于共同的祖先——原始齿蟾。在齿突蟾属中猫眼蟾亚属比齿突蟾亚属更为特化,后者与齿蟾属的亲缘关系相对较近。它们的分化与青藏高原的抬开有密切关系。  相似文献

It has been claimed that olenellids, long regarded as trilobites, are more closely related to chelicerates than to the rest of the trilobite clade (Lauterbach 1980). This was based on an interpretation of the homologies of segmental arrangement in the thorax, and of the thoracic axial spine. It is shown that there are more synapomorphies uniting accepted trilobites with the olenellids, than there are uniting olenellids with chelicerates. At least seven characters serve to define Trilobita as a natural, monophyletic group. These include the presence of a pygidium, the unique optical system, the presence of eye ridges, circum‐ocular ecdysial sutures, and the construction of the hypostome. Olenelloids include the most primitive of the trilobites, retaining three (possibly four) primitive characters, including the permarginal suture, flange‐like thoracic articulation and highly expressed segmentation on the larval cranidia. If facial sutures are primitively absent in the Trilobita there is no obvious olenelloid autapomorphy, and they may constitute a paraphyletic group.  相似文献

Cytochrome b sequences of 15 species of Viverridae were used to investigate the systematic relationships of the Asiatic Viverridae and their affinities to African viverrid species. Phylogenetic analyses (maximum parsimony and neighbour-joining) supported the hypothesis of paraphyly of the subfamily Viverrinae, whereas the data suggests the monophyly of the two Viverridae subfamilies endemic to Asia. The Asiatic viverrids do not appear to have a unique origin. Results indicate that the Asiatic linsang is less closely related to the other Asiatic taxa, whereas the African civet ( Civettictis ) groups with the Asiatic civets ( Viverra , Viverricula ). The relationships between the three clades — civets, Paradoxurinae, Hemigalinae — cannot be firmly established, but they appear to be closely related together.  相似文献

A brief survey is presented on fossil reproductive structures of early Angiosperms from the Lower and mid-Cretaceous and at the same time on the reproductive structures of those extant Angiosperms which resemble most closely these fossils and which seem to be especially primitive also on other grounds: a first group (Degeneriaceae, Himantandraceae, Eupomatiaceae, Austrobaileyaceae) possessing relatively complicated and conspicuous flowers with elaborated inner staminodes, a second group (Chloranthaceae, Trimeniaceae, Amborellaceae) possessing small and relatively simple, inconspicuous flowers with peculiar features in the carpels, and a third group (Winteraceae) possessing flowers with unusual variability in organ number and size. The three groups exhibit a certain diversity in pollination biology, although cantharophily seems to prevail, however different the cantharophily character syndromes may be between the groups. In the extant primitiveMagnoliidae variability occurs on other morphological levels than in the higher advanced Angiosperms. This has to be taken into consideration in evaluations of the systematic relationships of the various groups of theMagnoliidae. Presumably often their relationships are closer than it may appear at first sight. This is also true for the three groups here discussed.  相似文献

The catfish (Siluroidei) appear to have evolved from an ancestor which, in most respects other than the form of its teeth, resembled primitive Characinoidei. In the first part of this paper it is shown that most of the numerous and profound anatomical changes which have occurred in the course of their evolution from this ancestor can be related to one or other of three basic changes: depression of the body in adaptation to bottom-feeding habits, sensory modification in adaptation to nocturnal habits, and the evolution of defensive fin spines. Diplomystes is more primitive than other known catfish in the form of its maxilla and pectoral girdle, and in the posterior position of its dorsal fin.
The second part of the paper is concerned with some of the more specialized families of catfish (Mochokidae, Siluridae, Schilbeidae, Malapteruridae, Clariidae, Callichthyidae and Loricariidae). The specializations in each case are described, and related to the habits of the fish.  相似文献

Though the dictyosome of the Golgi apparatus appears to be generally distributed in plant and animal cells, it is here described for the first time in the fungi. The present report illustrates, in electron micrographs of thin sections, the characteristic structure of the Golgi dictyosome in a special cell type of a supporting pseudo-tissue (the inner ectal excipulum) of a highly evolved Ascomycete, Neobulgaria pura (Fr.) Petrak, a monotypic discomycete. This organelle may secrete the gelatinous matrix filling the cup formed by the inner ectal excipulum. All the other cells in this species appear more typical of fungal cells; i.e., they have no dictyosome and, unlike the cup-forming cells, they show characteristic continuities of the plasma membrane with the perinuclear cisternae. The dictyosome, in those cells in which it appears in this fungus, is formed by a series of vesiculations of the outer component of the nuclear envelope that align to form a stack of sacs. The sacs near the nucleus are flattened (by what appears to be an intermembrane cement) while those near the plasma membrane are more distended. These observations suggest three possibilities: first, fungi may be more closely related to other eukaryotic cells than previously suspected from electron microscopic studies; second, the outer nuclear membrane may have been the primitive precursor of the dictyosome; and third, the inverse relationship of the occurrence of the nuclear membrane plasma membrane continuities and the dictyosome suggests that the latter may have evolved as a means of removing from the cell the products of reactions occurring on a discontinuous membrane system.  相似文献

Pathogens switching to new hosts can result in the emergence of new infectious diseases, and determining which species are likely to be sources of such host shifts is essential to understanding disease threats to both humans and wildlife. However, the factors that determine whether a pathogen can infect a novel host are poorly understood. We have examined the ability of three host-specific RNA-viruses (Drosophila sigma viruses from the family Rhabdoviridae) to persist and replicate in 51 different species of Drosophilidae. Using a novel analytical approach we found that the host phylogeny could explain most of the variation in viral replication and persistence between different host species. This effect is partly driven by viruses reaching a higher titre in those novel hosts most closely related to the original host. However, there is also a strong effect of host phylogeny that is independent of the distance from the original host, with viral titres being similar in groups of related hosts. Most of this effect could be explained by variation in general susceptibility to all three sigma viruses, as there is a strong phylogenetic correlation in the titres of the three viruses. These results suggest that the source of new emerging diseases may often be predictable from the host phylogeny, but that the effect may be more complex than simply causing most host shifts to occur between closely related hosts.  相似文献

In this paper the authors describe the ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon and the spermatid in Struthio camelus and Dromaius novaehollandiae. The first species is characterized by a rod-like perforatorium within an endonuclear canal in the anterior third of the nucleus, while the second is characterized by an extremely reduced completely extranuclear perforatorium. Other differences are in the sperm dimensions, the number of mitochondria and the length of the axonemal accessory fibers. Considering both the present data and previous findings, Palaeognath birds appear to be a peculiar and monophyletic group, characterized by: 1), a conical acrosome surrounding the nucleus; 2), a fibrous sheath around most of the axoneme; and 3), an elongated distal centriole occupying the entire midpiece. Within this group, Tinamiformes seem to be more primitive than Struthioniformes. In the latter order Dromaius is distinctly different from the reduced Struthio and Rhea which are closely related to one another by the presence of a rod-like endonuclear perforatorium.  相似文献

For the Uppermost Miocene the already known zones MN 9 to MN 13 are used without any change; they prove to be particularly useful for the study of fossil rhinocerotids. The Plio-Villafranchian age corresponds to the zones 14 to 19, the definition of the first five being completed and the last being new. The genetic relationships among New and Old World coregonid fishes were studied by electrophoresis. The genetic composition of 60 populations, representing perhaps nine commonly recognized species of Coregonus and Stenodus from Europe and North America was determined for 37 genetic loci. Six distinct genetic groups were evident. The first contained only populations of the inconnu, Stenodus leucichthys (Güldenstadt). The Nei genetic distance between Stenodus and Coregonus was 0.305, a relatively small value as compared to other salmonid inter-generic comparisons. The second genetic grouping contained the Arctic cisco, C. autumnalis (Pallas), the N. American lake cisco, C. artedii Lesueur, and the Irish pollan, C. autumnalis pollan Thompson. These three taxa appear to be conspecific on the basis of genetic distances. The third genetic grouping contained the European whitefish, C. lavaretus (L.), and the N. American lake whitefish, C. clupeaformis (Mitchill). European and lake whitefish may be conspecific. Lake whitefish from northwestern N. America were more closely related to European whitefish (genetic distance 0.038) than to lake whitefish from central N. America (genetic distance 0.098). The fourth group contained the broad whitefish, C. nasus (Pallas), which is perhaps more closely related to the European/lake whitefish groups than other coregonids. The fifth genetic grouping contained only the Asian endemic, C. peled (Gmelin), and the sixth contained the least cisco, C. sardinella Valenciennes, and vendace, C. albula (L.), which also appear to be conspecific. The widespread genetic groupings obtained for ciscoes indicate that they do not constitute a single closely related group within the genus Coregonus.  相似文献
