Methods were developed for rearingGlypta fumiferanae Viereck on a nondiapausing laboratory colony of the western spruce budworm,Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman. Both host and parasite are univoltine and undergo diapause in nature. In this study, the parasite's voltinism was synchronized with that of a nondiapausing host.G. fumiferanae mated readily in the laboratory, and 5 consecutive generations were reared with an average generation time of less than 8 weeks-much less than the 23 weeks needed for 1 generation to develop in the field. Developmental times are reported, and some aspects of behavior described.  相似文献

A comparative study was made of the fertility, fecundity and longevity ofTrichogramma confusum Vigg. reared in the laboratory on eggs ofCorcyra cephalonica St., vs. a wild type population of the same species. Laboratory reared females showed a significantly higher degree of sterility than wild-type females while sterility amongst males did not differ significantly. Under laboratory conditions, laboratory reared females lived longer than wild-type females but produced fewer progeny as indicated by life-table data suggesting that their “effective” life is shorter. The high precentage of sterility amongst laboratory reared females should be taken into account when making inundative field releases. As size of the host may influence the fecundity and behaviour of laboratory rearedTrichogramma, the use of a suitable host which produces larger eggs would have to be considered in any mass-breeding programme.  相似文献

The ability of the braconid parasite,Iphiaulax varipalpis Cary to control the beetleDyrphya nigricornis Olivier was evaluated. Field collected samples and specimens reared in polyethylene paper tubes under laboratory conditions (23.0°C±1.0 at 70% r.h) were used. Field parasitism was low (10.72%) while laboratory parasitism was high (57.66%). The parasite detected the hosts very easily in the laboratory. This ability is minimised in thick canopies ofCoffea arabica L. Host colonization was brisk (90 seconds) and confined to a near absolute area of discovery, measuring 4.18±0.41 cm. The parasite reproduces gregariously with female lifespan being approximately double the male period. The parasites are very active at the age of 10 days. As they age their potential fecundity (232 oocytes) reduces drastically with oviposition.   相似文献

Field and laboratory choice tests in which searching adultEncarsia opulenta Silvestri were exposed to variable densities of citrus blackfly,Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, indicated the following: (1) a direct functional relationship between adult parasite aggregation and host density, resulting in (2) a direct density-dependent mortality ofA. woglumi within a single generation timespan. The implications of such nonrandom searching patterns byE. opulenta on stability of the host-parasite interaction on Texas citrus are discussed.  相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized.  相似文献

Among 6 laboratory hosts tested, the egg-larval parasitoidChelonus blackburni Cameron completed its development in only 3;Corcyra cephalonica Stainton,Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) andAchroia grisella (Fabricius). The parasitoid failed to develop inSpodoptera litura (Fabricius),Galleria mellonella L. andSitotroga cerealella (Olivier). The development period of the parasitoids obtained from permissive hosts correspond to the development period of their hosts. Development period ofP. operculella, A grisella andC. cephalonica were 24.7±2.0, 39.5±2.1 and 50.5±4.1 days respectively while the development period of the parasitoid reared from these hosts were 25.8±1.6, 36.4±3.5 and 42.5±3.5 days respectively. The fecundity of the parasitoids reared onA. grisella, P. operculella andC. cephalonica were 365.2±52.8, 287.9±101.9 and 248.7±50.8 respectively. The size of the parasitoids reared from the above 3 hosts also followed the similar trend. However, no significant difference was observed on the percent parasitism and the longevity of the parasitoids reared on different hosts. This study was conducted at a temperature of 24±2°C and 60±5% RH. Contribution No 46001 of Biological Control Centre (NCIPM), Bangalore.  相似文献

A laboratory and a field test for flight initiation ofTrichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) (synonymous toT. maidis Pintureau et Voegele) were developed with the aim to establish a simple, cheap and quick flight quality control method forTrichogramma producers. The flight quality of four strains ofT. brassicae reared onEphestia kuehniella Zeller eggs were compared. The material tested consisted of four strains: two strains reared for two (F2) and 39 to 42 (F39–42) generations onE. kuehniella eggs without storage treatment, a diapause strain reared six generations (F6) onE. kuehniella eggs and a commercial strain also reared onE. kuehniella eggs whose production and storage conditions were unknown. Clear differences in flight activity among strains were observed. Both, the F2 and commercial strain showed significantly better flight activity under laboratory conditions compared to the other strains. Flight field cage experiments were made for comparison between field and laboratory results. Similar differences among strains in field cage experiments were observed when compared to laboratory tests.  相似文献

Incidence of parasites ofLymantria obfuscata Walker [Lymantriidae: Lepidoptera] was studied in Kashmir during 1983 and 1984. The only egg parasite reared wasAnastatus kashmirensis Mathur parasitising between 4.49 to 11.92 percent of eggs. From 15 study sites as many as 10475 larvae of different stages and pupae were collected and reared in laboratory.Exorista rossica [Tachinidae: Diptera] was recorded to parasitize upto 8.42 per cent of larvae compared to 0.89 percent byCompsilura sp.Tetrastichus sp. [Eulophidae: Hymenoptera] was observed to be most dominant of the 6 pupal parasites, accounting for 33.41 percent of the measured parasitism, followed byPimpla sp. [Ichneumonidae: Hymenoptera] andTheronia atalantae atalantae [Ichneumonidae: Hymenoptera] which parasitized 6.84 and 4.03 per cent of pupae respectively.Brachymeria intermedia Nees [Chalcididae: Hymenoptera] was recorded to parasitize upto 2.98 per cent whereasBrachymeria lasus Walker recorded for the first time in Kashmir was found to parasitize up to 2.01 per cent, but was not widely distributed in the State.  相似文献

Biological control of eggplant pests in general, and (CPB)Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) in particular, is highly problematic.Edovum puttleri Grissell, an exotic egg parasitoid which has been found potentially effective, is being reared to this end. Frozen CPB eggs (?18°C) proved to be accepted and suitable for parasitization byE. puttleri. However, when given a choice between 20 frozen and 20 normal eggs every 2 days, the females exhibited a significant preference for the latter. Parasitization and host predation patterns related to female age are described by 2 opposing fourth-order polynomial functions. Parasitization increased up to day 10, followed by progressive decline. Average life span per female was 31.10±.58, with a recorded maximum of 56 days. High predatory behaviour of older females, which showed a decrease in parasitization, was observed in these experimental conditions.  相似文献

Rearing techniques and results of preliminary host range tests are reported forHadena perplexa (Denis & Schiffermuller) (Lep.: Phalaenidae) a candidate biocontrol agent against the weed bladder campion,Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke, in Manitoba, Canada. In the laboratory, it was necessary to pipette a 15% honey solution in water into the flowers as food for the adult moths. When reared singly to avoid cannibalism, 56% of the 1st instar larvae developed to pupae. Larvae fed on a natural diet for 10 days can then be reared on either one of 2 artificial diets. Choice oviposition tests and no-choice larval feeding tests were conducted with plant species closely related toS. vulgaris in the generaSilene, Dianthus, Gypsophila, Lychnis, Saponaria. Species in 4 of 5 of these genera were accepted for oviposition, and species in all 5 genera supported the development of 1st instar larvae to the pupal stage.H. perplexa should not be introduced into Canada.   相似文献

A diet based on bovine meat was evaluated as an alternative food source for rearing the predatory bugsPodisus maculiventris (Say) andPodisus sagitta (Fabricius). Thus far, 7 and 5 continuous generations of the respective species have been reared on this diet. In comparison to rearing on larvae of the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella (L.), however, nymphal development was prolonged with 15–40% and adult weights were lower, reaching 72–82% of the control weights. Fecundity of females reared on the meat diet was reduced to about 1/3–1/2 of that of the control, but egg weight and egg fertility were comparable with those in cultures fed live prey. Results obtained for laboratory rearing on this medium were generally better forP. maculiventris than forP. sagitta.   相似文献

The biology of the earwig,Doru taeniatum (Dohrn), a reported predator ofSpodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), was studied in the laboratory.D. taeniatum under laboratory conditions was easily reared, mated readily and females tended eggs and first instar nymphs.D. taeniatum developed through 4 nymphal instars and reached imago in approximately 30 days. It is an omnivore in the laboratory and capable of developing and reproduction on plant pollen alone, and on Lepidoptera eggs (Sitotroga carealella) (Olivier) alone. Immatures developed most rapidly and females were most fecund when fed either a combination ofS. cereallea eggs and pollen, orS. cerealella eggs alone. Tetrastichus gallerucae (Fonscolombe) was collected in southern France in 1985 and is being reared at the Division of Biological Control in Albany, Ca for use against the elm leaf beetle (ELB),Xanthogaleruca luteola (Müller) in northern California. This egg parasitoid can be reared easily by keeping the beetle eggs on a moist substrate to prevent desiccation and by inhibiting the growth of mold with air currents. A laboratory colony of ELB adults provides a constant supply of fresh eggs for the parasitoids. In 1985 and 1986 over 80,000T. gallerucae were released at 17 sites.   相似文献

Allorhogas pyralophagus Marsh is a recently discovered doryctine braconid with potential for field trials against stalk borers infesting both large- and small- stemmed Graminacea. This external gregarious parasite was originally reared fromEoreuma loftini (Dyar) larvae infesting Johnson grass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] and sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) from the states of Sinaloa and Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The parasite is easily reared in the laboratory using a wide range of host larvae [Diatraea spp.,E. loftini, Chilo sp. andTryporyza nivelli (F)]. Hosts are placed in grass stems or paper straws for exposure to ovipositing females.A. pyralophagus has been field released and recovered from the following hosts infesting sugar cane:E. loftini andD. saccharalis (F.) in Texas.Diatraea spp. in Trinidad,D. rufescens in Bolivia andT. nivella in Sumatra, Indonesia. Euphasiopteryx depleta (Wied) flies successfully developed in the mole cricketsScapteriscus borellii Giglio-Tos andScapteriscus vicinus Scudder, as well as in the short-tailed cricket,Anurogryllus sp., after artificially placing larvae under their pronota. Using this technique, no relation was found between the number of larvae placed on each cricket and the resulting number of puparia obtained from the cricket. In all cases, the number of flies emerging from the puparia was small, with females failing to mature reproductively. AsE. depleta has been reared from field collectedScapteriscus spp., the exact reasons for lack of maturation remain unknown.Anurogryllus sp. can be considered a probable alternate host forE. depleta.   相似文献

In vitro rearing of the aphid endoparasitoidLysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) was attempted. Successful permanent cultures ofAphis fabae Sc. andMyzus persicae Sulz. cells were not obtained. Therefore, parasitoid larvae were reared in 2 unnatural media rone of which included cells ofCeratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera, Trypetidae). A group of larvae was reared in a substrate to which parasitoid teratocytes had been added. SinceLysiphlebus fabarum females did not oviposit into paraffin droplets including the substrates, the larvae were directly transferred from parasitized aphids into the rearing media. Several larvae reached the final instar, but only 2 out of the 48 tested in the 3 substrates became adults. The meaning of teratocytes inin vitro rearing of Aphidiine, Braconids is discussed. Out of the 2 important physical factors like temperature and relative humidity, the former plays significant role in affecting the survival of adults and development of immature stages ofCheiloneurus pyrillae Mani which is an important egg parasitoid of the sugarcane leaf hopper (Pyrilla perpusilla Walker) in India. Average longevity of males and females of this parasitoid decreased from 2.47 to 0.81 days and from 4.95 to 0.84 days, respectively when the test temperature was increased from 15 to 35±1.5°C. Similarly, its mean developmental period was found to reduce from a maximum of 45.87 to a minimum of 10.12 days when the rearing temperature was increased from 15 to 30±1.5°C. The parasitoid could not be reared at or above 32.5±1.5°C because its immature stages failed to withstand this temperature. These informations will be helpful in maintaining the mass culture ofC. pyrillae in the laboratory.  相似文献

A simple method was developed to collect large numbers of the egg-larval parasite,Biosteres oophilus Fullaway for inoculative and inundative releases to enhance biological control of tephritid fruit flies. Whole papaya fruits,Carica sp., infested in the laboratory by the oriental fruit fly,Dacus dorsalis Hendel, were exposed to the parasite in the field. The flies and parasites in the fruits were reared through to adults in the laboratory. The simplicity of the method required only the labor of one person to collect large numbers ofB. oophilus of uniform age. In addition, the method can be used as a survey tool to collect other species of parasites and to determine their spatial and seasonal distribution in the field.  相似文献

The citrus whiteflyDialeurodes citri Ashmead is one of the most important insect pests of citrus groves on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus and on the Caspian Sea coast of the Talysh Mountains; it is the most important citrus pest of trench cultivation in Central Asia and in glasshouses. The parasitoidEncarsia lahorensis Howard was introduced in 1983 into Russia (Moscow) from Pakistan. It was reared in a laboratory of the All-Russian Plant Quarantine Institute. The parasitoid was released as follows: in 1985 in Adzharia (Batumi); in 1987 in a glasshouse in Russia (near Moscow) and in 1988-1990 in Central Asia - Uzbekistan (Namangan) and other regions. It established well in all places of release. The rate of parasitization ofD. citri byE. lahorensis reached 50–52% in the orchard in Batumi five years after the first release, 56–60% in the glasshouse in Moscow three years after the first release, and 50% in trenches in Namangan two years after the first release. Levels of the pest populations decreased dramatically in the glasshouse and trenches. The efficiency of the additional feeding ofE. lahorensis adults on the host larvae was evaluated to 26 to 60%. The differences between populations of the parasitoid in the three different areas are discussed.  相似文献
