The leaching of phthalate plasticizers from four types of blood platelet bags was investigated. The anticoagulant solutions used in the blood collection bags had pH values of 5.64 +/- .04 and contained no detectable amounts of phthalates. Platelet bag materials from each bag were soaked in normal salines for up to 5 days. The salines were tested for the leached phthalates from the bags but none could be found. However, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) leached out of the PL-146 and Terumo bags into bovine calf serum used for soaking the bag materials. There was an increase in the amount of DEHP leached from about 1.1 mg at the end of one day to about 3.3 mg per gm of bag material at the end of a five day extraction with the serum. In PL-732 sets, a platelet bag made of a specialty polyolefin, the amount of DEHP leached out was less than 0.02 mg per g of bag material. CLX bags, which contained tri-(2-ethylhexyl) trimelliate (TETM) as a plasticizer, showed a negligible amount of it leaching into the calf serum. Infra-red spectra showed that PL-146 bags had been coated with a layer of a fatty acid amide while the Terumo bags contained a layer of a silicone fluid on their inner surfaces. CLX bags showed a coating of stearates, which were probably soaps of calcium or zinc. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the inner surfaces of each brand of the bag were distinctly different morphologically. The two PVC bags were very similar whereas the surfaces morphology of PL-732 was rougher. Terumo bag had a different surface morphology than those of the other bags whereas the CLX bags had a very regular surface pattern. The exact significance of the surface morphology is not certain but excessively rough surfaces may not be desirable for the bags.  相似文献

The present study was designed to determine whether a bag made from ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EV) with superior flexibility at subzero temperature is suitable for a storage container of single-donor apheresis platelets. Apheresis platelets were stored with 100 ml plasma in 1-liter bags made of EV or standard polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic at 22 degrees C with constant agitation. The oxygen permeability of the 1-liter EV bag averaged 1447 nmol/min/atm, which was about 1.5 times higher than that of PVC bags. The partial oxygen tension (PO2) of platelet concentrates (PC) has linearly decreased to 16 mm Hg with increasing platelet counts. The level of the partial carbon dioxide was always higher in EV bags than in PVC bags. Oxygen consumption rates of platelets stored in EV and PVC bags with a sufficient oxygen supply averaged 1.25 and 1.20 nmol/min/10(9) platelets, respectively. The rates of glucose consumption and lactate production were not changed in two bags. Ninety percent of the total ATP production of about 8 nmol/min/10(9) platelets were generated through the aerobic metabolism. The platelet counts in the 1-liter EV and PVC bags, at which PO2 is 16 mm Hg, were 2.2 and 1.5 x 10(11) platelets, respectively. The study indicates that apheresis platelets stored in EV bags at 22 degrees C have no different metabolic changes when compared with those of PVC bags. In addition, the number of platelets maintaining the aerobic metabolism is 1.5 times higher than that of PVC bags.  相似文献

研究了套袋苹果果实发育过程中不同类型果袋内温、湿度的变化以及果袋对果实外观品质的影响.结果表明:果袋内的温度和湿度变化呈负相关,一天中袋内温度从9:00开始迅速升高,最高温度在春秋季一般出现在13:00-14:00,盛夏一般出现在13:00-17:00,最低温度出现在5:00前后,最高湿度出现在6:00前后.不同类型的果袋温、湿度变化不同,特别在高温和阴雨天差异明显,最高温度表现为双层袋》单层袋,而最高湿度表现为单层袋》双层袋.高温往往伴随极度干燥,当袋内温度超过35 ℃时,微域湿度一般低于40%.套袋对苹果果实品质有重要影响,果实外观品质以双层袋较好、单层袋较差;而双层袋中又以XL袋效果最好.  相似文献

Abstract:  For their simplicity and effectiveness, pitfall traps have become a standard technique to measure the activity and relative abundance of ground-dwelling arthropods. Permeable screen or mesh bags filled with plant material, referred to as litter bags, have also recently been employed as a complementary sampling technique for epigeal taxa. The anticipated need for increased field research on arthropod populations, particularly in transgenic crops with insecticidal properties, suggests that a relative assessment of both sampling methods could contribute to the design of future studies. Comparisons among pitfall traps, and litter bags placed above- or below-ground indicated that above-ground litter bags most frequently succeeded in collecting certain groups of arthropods associated with moisture and sheltered areas, including centipedes (Chilopoda) and beetle larvae (Carabidae, Staphylinidae). Conversely, pitfall traps most often captured taxa considered active at ground level, such as adult carabids or harvestmen (Opiliones). For taxa collected in >40% of all three trap types, bootstrap confidence intervals for the coefficient of variation (CV; used to assess precision or sampling efficiency) showed that above-ground litter bags were significantly more precise than pitfall traps for sampling elongate springtails (Collembola) and adult rove beetles (Staphylinidae), but only during the first year of sampling. While below-ground litter bags often appeared similar to one or both of the other trap types, in no case were below-ground litter bags best based on frequency of collection or CV. Though differences were not always consistent between years, results suggest that the additional effort required to sample using litter bags may be justified for the collection of some ground-dwelling taxa.  相似文献

The effects of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl on decomposition of plant material still remain unknown. We predicted that decomposition rate would be reduced in the most contaminated sites due to an absence or reduced densities of soil invertebrates. If microorganisms were the main agents responsible for decomposition, exclusion of large soil invertebrates should not affect decomposition. In September 2007 we deposited 572 bags with uncontaminated dry leaf litter from four species of trees in the leaf litter layer at 20 forest sites around Chernobyl that varied in background radiation by more than a factor 2,600. Approximately one quarter of these bags were made of a fine mesh that prevented access to litter by soil invertebrates. These bags were retrieved in June 2008, dried and weighed to estimate litter mass loss. Litter mass loss was 40 % lower in the most contaminated sites relative to sites with a normal background radiation level for Ukraine. Similar reductions in litter mass loss were estimated for individual litter bags, litter bags at different sites, and differences between litter bags at pairs of neighboring sites differing in level of radioactive contamination. Litter mass loss was slightly greater in the presence of large soil invertebrates than in their absence. The thickness of the forest floor increased with the level of radiation and decreased with proportional loss of mass from all litter bags. These findings suggest that radioactive contamination has reduced the rate of litter mass loss, increased accumulation of litter, and affected growth conditions for plants.  相似文献

The number of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) shot in the UK has declined by 50% during the 20th century This decline has coincided with reductions in the area of suitable habitat and recoveries in the populations of some avian predators. Here we use long-term records of shooting bags and a large-scale manipulation of raptor density to disentangle the effects of habitat loss and raptor predation on grouse populations. The numbers of grouse harvested on the Eskdale half of Langholm Moor in southern Scotland declined significantly during 1913-1990 and grouse bags from the whole moor from 1950 to 1990 exhibited an almost identical but non-significant trend. Hen harriers (Circus cyaneus) and peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were absent or bred at low densities on this moor throughout this period but heather-dominant vegetation declined by 48% between 1948 and 1988. Harrier and peregrine breeding numbers on Langholm Moor increased to high levels following protection in 1990 whilst grouse density and grouse bags declined year after year until shooting was abandoned in 1998. The prediction of a peak in grouse bags on Langholm Moor in 1996 based on the patterns of bags during 1950-1990 was supported by the observed peaks in 1997 on two nearby moors with few raptors which formerly cycled in synchrony with Langholm Moor. This study demonstrates that, whilst long-term declines in grouse bags were most probably due to habitat loss, high levels of raptor predation subsequently limited the grouse population and suppressed a cycle. This study thus offers support to theoretical models which predict that generalist predators may suppress cycles in prey populations.  相似文献

Attempts to arrest seagrass loss through numerous rehabilitation methods have traditionally produced inconsistent results. On Australia's southern coast, hessian bags made from biodegradable jute fibers show promise for rehabilitating Amphibolis antarctica by facilitating recruitment of seedlings in situ. Testing ways to improve the performance of bags (i.e. increasing seagrass recruitment and establishment) showed that bags with a coarse outer weave of hessian facilitated greater seedling densities (approximately 1700 individuals/m2) than bags with a fine outer weave, but the content of bags (sand vs. sand and rubble mixture) had little effect. Isolated bags facilitated greater longer term densities than bags grouped together, while similar densities were sampled up to 80 m away from a natural meadow. Lastly, bags that had spent less time in situ initially facilitated more recruits than older bags, but longer term (21–32 months) retention was similar among bag ages. Collectively, the results suggest hessian bags can be a relatively simple, cost‐effective, and environmentally friendly method for rehabilitating Amphibolis seagrass, with few considerations in their use other than their physical architecture and arrangement (e.g. isolated coarse‐weave bags).  相似文献

The conditions for optimal steam decontamination of polypropylene bags half loaded with laboratory biomedical waste were studied (276 bags were processed). Controls were single-closed bags without water added or incisions made in the top, standing freely in an autoclave set at 121°C. The average time required to reach 121°C at the load center was 46 min for controls. A significant increase in this time occurred following addition of water to bags without incisions (60 min), with double bagging (60 min), or when using vertical containers (82 min). A significant decrease occurred when bags were slashed (37 min) or processed at 123°C (32 min) or 132°C (19 min). Horizontal containers or addition of water to slashed bags had no significant effect.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were carried out in the Department of Biological Sciences, Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, southwestern Nigeria, to determine the extent of fungal deterioration of melon seeds stored in two types of storage bags viz; jute and polyethylene bags. Melon seeds of varieties Tc139 and V2 were stored in jute and polyethylene bags under ambient conditions using the 2 × 2 factorial design (variety vs type of bag) for 12 months. The moisture content (mc), incidence of visible mouldiness (ivm) and germinability of the stored seeds were determined monthly. The mc of Tc139 ranged from 6.1 to 6.7% in jute and 6.2 to 6.5% in polyethylene bags. The ivm which was initially 2.1% increased to 10.7% and 5.5% in jute and polyethylene bags respectively, after 12 months in storage. The germination percentage decreased from 96.3% to 28.7% and 45.3% in jute and polyethylene bags, respectively. The mc of V2 stored in jute and polyethylene bags varied from 5.9 to 6.4%, and 5.8 to 6.2%, respectively. The ivm increased from 1.8% before storage to 8.9% and 4.8% in jute and polyethylene bags, respectively, after 12 months. The percentage seed germination declined from 98.0%to 37.3% in jute and 48.7% in polyethylene bags after 12 months. Decreased incidence of field fungi namely: Alternaria, Botryodiplodia theobromae, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Macrophomina phaseolina was accompanied by simultaneous increase in storage fungi viz: Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Rhizopus with prolonged storage. Increasing drying time adversely affects attachment of tissue proteins and prion-associated amyloid to surgical stainless steel, and reduces the efficacy of commercial cleaning chemistries. This study tested the efficacy of commercial humidity retention bags to reduce biofouling on surgical stainless steel and to improve subsequent cleaning. Surgical stainless steel surfaces were contaminated with ME7-infected brain homogenates and left to dry for 15 to 1,440 min either in air, in dry polythene bags or within humidity retention bags. Residual contamination pre/post cleaning was analysed using Thioflavin T/SYPRO Ruby dual staining and microscope analysis. An increase in biofouling was observed with increased drying time in air or in sealed dry bags. Humidity retention bags kept both protein and prion-associated amyloid minimal across the drying times both pre- and post-cleaning. Therefore, humidity bags demonstrate a cheap, easy to implement solution to improve surgical instrument reprocessing and to potentially reduce associated hospital acquired infections.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fabrics used in pollination bags may exclude pollen carried by biotic vectors, but have varying degrees of permeability to wind-borne pollen. The permeability of bags to wind-borne pollen may have important consequences in studies of pollination and reproductive biology. The permeability of four fabrics commonly used in the construction of pollination bags was examined. METHODS: Deposition of wind-borne pollen on horizontally and vertically oriented microscope slides was assessed on slides enclosed in pollination bags, as well as on control slides. KEY RESULTS: It was found that the permeability of fabrics to wind-borne pollen, as measured by deposition on both horizontally and vertically oriented slides, decreased with pore size. However, deposition on horizontal slides was always greater than on vertical slides for a given fabric; this could manifest itself as differential success of pollination of flowers in bags-dependent on flower orientation. CONCLUSIONS: Obviously, bags with mesh size smaller than most pollen grains are impermeable to pollen. However, material for such bags is very expensive. In addition, it was also observed that bags with even moderately small pore size, such as pores (approx. 200 microm) in twisted fibre cotton muslin, offered highly significant barriers to passage of wind-borne pollen. Such bags are sufficiently effective in most large-sample-size reproductive biology studies.  相似文献

This paper describes a flow dilution olfactometer which allowsthe odorization of large stimulation areas and the easy manipulationof several odorants and/or concentrations. Generation of theodorized air is performed by mixing in two steps the odor vaporcontained in Tedlar bags with a pure air stream flowing continuouslyout of a nozzle. Discrete concentration values are obtainedby using pre-adjusted needle valves to change the vapor flowsampled in the bags. This kind of olfactometer was utilizedto study odor coding in the olfactory bulbs of rats and rabbits.Five Odorants were delivered at concentrations ranging from2 x 10-4 to 1.5 x 10-2 of the saturated vapor pressure. Measurementsshowed that lower concentrations can be obtained by fillingthe bags with a more diluted odor vapor. Furthermore, the numberof test odorants can be increased at low cost by increasingthe number of Tedlar bags.  相似文献

1. The exposure of mesh litter bags has been widely used to investigate the role of benthic macroinvertebrates in leaf processing in freshwaters. In this sense, several studies have related litter bag breakdown rates to the presence of colonizing invertebrates. A possible confounding factor in such experiments is that the litter bags trap suspended particulate organic matter that can itself attract invertebrate colonists, irrespective of the intended experimental treatment.
2. We attempted to quantify the accumulation of particulate organic matter (POM) within litter bags and to investigate its possible impact on macroinvertebrate density and richness. In seven headwater forested streams we exposed mesh bags filled either with beech leaves ( Fagus sylvatica ) or with plastic strips of an equal surface area.
3. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that bag type and stream were the main explanatory variables for invertebrate colonization and POM accumulation within the bags. In contrast, there was little variation among sampling dates (6.4% of the total inertia).
4. The accumulated POM within the bags was substantial (up to 8.83 g ash-free dry mass (AFDM)) but highly variable among sites (mean from 0.32 to 4.58 g AFDM). At each of the seven sites, both richness and abundance of invertebrates were positively correlated with the mass of accumulated POM in bags. Macroinvertebrate colonization (notably taxon richness) was directly linked with the quantity of POM accumulated.
5. Our findings provide evidence of a potential pitfall in linking invertebrates to litter processing in mesh bags, particularly when large amounts of POM, entrained in stream flow, accumulate within the bags. An evaluation of the POM mass trapped in litter bags could account for the erratic patterns sometimes observed in their colonization by invertebrates.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) provide nutrients to their hosts by means of hyphae that extend beyond nutrient-depleted rhizosphere soil. Soil bacteria may compete with EMF for nutrients or may act synergistically to enhance nutrient supply to hosts. To assess the interactions between hyphae and bacteria, two types of small, sand-filled mesh bags were incubated in a Pseudotsuga menziesii/Betula papyrifera forest. The bags allowed ingrowth by EMF (35-μm mesh) or excluded hyphae (0.5-μm mesh), while allowing migration of soil bacteria. After incubation, bacteria were isolated from bags using a method to enrich for Gram-positive bacteria. Isolates were assayed for phosphatase and N-acetyl glucosaminidase (NAGase) activities to assess the potential to access organic phosphorus and nitrogen. The average phosphatase activities were higher in exclusion than ingrowth bags, while NAGase activities did not differ. Streptomyces isolates, which are expected to be strong competitors and antagonists of EMF, were more prevalent in ingrowth bags and yet had lower phosphatase activities. Furthermore, there were no indications of antagonism between fungi and Streptomyces, as there were no increases in NAGase activities in ingrowth bags. We conclude that fungal hyphae can structure components of the soil bacterial community for decreased extracellular enzyme production.  相似文献

以‘巨峰’葡萄为试材,研究白袋、绿袋、红袋、蓝袋4种不同颜色果袋对葡萄成熟期果实中挥发性成分的影响,为葡萄专用果袋的研发提供理论依据.结果表明:不同颜色果袋可为葡萄果实的发育提供特定的光环境,不同套袋处理葡萄成熟期果实中的挥发性成分差异显著.‘巨峰’葡萄成熟期果实中检测到酯、醛、醇、酮类、萜烯类和芳香族化合物,对照、白袋、绿袋、红袋和蓝袋处理成熟期果实检测到的挥发性组分分别为33、37、38、32和34种.与对照相比,白袋处理乙酸乙酯、己酸乙酯等酯类物质含量降低,己醛、反式-2-己烯醛、癸醛含量增加;绿袋处理除3-己烯酸乙酯、反式-2-己烯酸乙酯、3-羟基丁酸乙酯、反式-2-己烯醛、(反,反)-2,4-己二烯醛、癸醛、苯乙醇外,其他共有组分的含量均出现降低;红袋处理乙酸乙酯、己酸乙酯等酯类物质含量降低,己醛、反式-2-己烯醛等的含量出现降低;蓝袋处理乙酸乙酯、己酸乙酯等主要酯类物质的含量未发生较大变化,己醛、反式-2-己烯醛等的含量出现升高.在非共有组分中,套袋处理中醇类组分的种类减少,萜烯类、芳香族化合物的种类增加.总体上,蓝袋处理果实中主要的‘果香型’酯类组分含量最高,白袋处理果实中主要的酯类组分及‘青草香型’的醛类组分含量较高,绿袋、红袋处理果实主要香气组分含量较低.  相似文献

The influence of nature of the feed sample, feeding frequency and pore size on the influx of bacteria and protozoa into synthetic fiber bags suspended in the rumens of sheep fed different diets was studied. Counts of total culturable bacteria in bags with a pore size of 10 microns were less than 30% of the ruminal counts for animals that were fed the lucerne hay and high-roughage diets. The maximum count (62 and 82% of the ruminal count) for these specific diets was obtained by using bags with a pore size of 53 microns. Protozoal counts in bags with pore sizes of 30 and 53 microns were equal to or higher than the ruminal counts for the lucerne hay and high-roughage diets but less than half of the ruminal count for the low-roughage diet. An interaction between incubation time, feeding frequency of the host animals, and the microbial populations developing inside the bags was also demonstrated. The results clearly show that the microbial population inside the bag differed from that of the surrounding ruminal ingesta and that caution must be taken in interpreting results on feed evaluation and especially on rates of degradation when using the in sacculus technique. Factors influencing the influx of bacteria and protozoa into bags with different pore sizes and containing a variety of substrates are discussed together with suggestions for the use of this technique.  相似文献

A modified litter bag design and handling procedure were tested to establish whether these reduced the exaggerated fragmentation losses that occur with standard litter bags. The modified design was compared with standard coarse (5 mm) and fine (0.25 mm) mesh litter bags using Phragmitesleaf litter. All were positioned in a section of a reedbed subject to water level management but negligible water flow. Breakdown rates were significantly reduced with the modified design but these were still significantly greater than those in the fine mesh bags. Owing to the extended period, results were influenced by invertebrates colonising the fine mesh bags. The significance of bag design and invertebrate colonisation are discussed.  相似文献

Due to acid rain and nitrogen deposition, there is growing concern that other mineral nutrients, primarily potassium and phosphorus, might limit forest production in boreal forests. Ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi are important for the acquisition of potassium and phosphorus by trees. In a field investigation, the effects of poor potassium and phosphorus status of forest trees on the production of EcM mycelium were examined. The production of EcM mycelium was estimated in mesh bags containing sand, which were buried in the soil of forests of different potassium and phosphorus status. Mesh bags with 2% biotite or 1% apatite in sand were also buried to estimate the effect of local sources of nutrients on the production of EcM mycelium. No clear relation could be found between the production of EcM mycelium and nutrient status of the trees. Apatite stimulated the mycelial production, while biotite had no significant effect. EcM root production at the mesh bag surfaces was stimulated by apatite amendment in a forest with poor phosphorus status. The contribution of EcM fungi to apatite weathering was estimated by using rare earth elements (REE) as marker elements. The concentration of REE was 10 times higher in EcM roots, which had grown in contact with the outer surface of apatite-amended mesh bags than in EcM roots grown in contact with the biotite amended or sand-filled mesh bags. In a laboratory study, it was confirmed that REE accumulated in the roots with very low amounts <1 translocated to the shoots. The short-term effect of EcM mycelium on the elemental composition of biotite and apatite was investigated and compared with biotite- and apatite-amended mesh bags buried in trenched soil plots, which were free from EcM fungi. The mesh bags subjected to EcM fungi showed no difference in chemical composition after 17 months in the field. This study suggests that trees respond to phosphorus limitation by increased exploitation of phosphorus-containing minerals by ectomycorrhiza. However, the potential to ameliorate potassium limitation in a similar way appears to be low.  相似文献
