Nhlabane coastal lake and estuary system in South Africa is divided by a permanent barrage constructed at the outlet of the lake. This study compared the zooplankton assemblages of the lake and estuary systems after 15 years of separation. Before sampling commenced the mouth of the estuary closed and remained so throughout the duration of the study. The lake was completely fresh and the estuary had a low salinity not exceeding 4‰. Both the estuary and lake are shallow systems (less than 2 m) and were well mixed. Turbidity levels were generally below 10 NTUs. Temperature fluctuated seasonally between 18.5 and 30°C. Oxygen levels ranged between 4.3 and 9.9 mg/l but were mostly above 5 mg/l for both systems. The estuarine and lake plankton was dominated by copepod instars, especially of the calanoid Pseudodiaptomus hessei. During the entire study period the lake also supported high densities of rotifers. Rotifers only appeared in the estuarine plankton at the end of the sampling period. During the first sampling sessions zooplankton diversity in the estuary was higher but declined thereafter to levels within the range calculated for the lake. Estuarine relict species recorded reflect the estuarine history of the lake. Multivariate analyses indicated a change in the composition of the zooplankton community in the estuary during the duration of the study, while that of the lake remained comparatively stable. Species composition analyses showed that this change in the estuary was due to a shift from an estuarine to a more freshwater zooplankton assemblage. During this change some estuarine species declined in abundance or were not recorded anymore. These changes in the zooplankton community of the estuary may well illustrate the changes that occurred in the lower (south) section of the lake after completion of the barrage which isolated it from the estuary. Behaviour of large perch Perca fluviatilis was studied in two lakes differing in environmental state i.e. mesotrophic v. hypereutrophic. A total of 20 adult perch P. fluviatilis (29–42 cm total length) in each lake were tagged with radio‐transmitters, tracked and located eight times a day during six 24 h tracking periods over a year, enabling detection of differences in diel activity patterns and habitat use during summer and winter under two different environmental regimes. During summer, P. fluviatilis in the mesotrophic lake showed a distinct crepuscular activity pattern and a change from pelagic residency during daytime towards the littoral zone at night. In contrast, P. fluviatilis in the hypereutrophic lake were active during the entire diel cycle and were spread throughout the lake also during dark. During winter, crepuscular patterns of activity were seen in both lakes. Condition factor of large P. fluviatilis did not differ between the two lakes. Thus, it is suggested that P. fluviatilis in the hypereutrophic turbid lake adopted an alternative behaviour for successful foraging, being uniformly active throughout the diel cycle.  相似文献

The active volcano El Chichón (Chiapas, Mexico) hosts a shallow acidic crater lake. During the period 2001–2007, 26 photographs of the crater lake were taken from the same spot at the eastern crater rim, ~160 m above the crater floor. The size of the lake was extremely variable. Using a GPS track from around the lake shore as a reference, 26 digitized lake outlines were corrected simultaneously for the perspective angle. The corrected lake outlines were superposed, leading to a “morphological map” of a large section of the lake bottom. This map provides insight into the erosive–sedimentary regime of the lake floor. The inner section of the lake is more stable due to the precipitation of sealing clays. This is probably one of the reasons why the El Chichón crater lake has never disappeared during the past 28 years. The sealing clays at the lake bottom can be considered the superficial analog of impermeable clay caps at the depths of hydrothermal systems. The photographic procedure presented here may be useful for other limnological and (volcanic) lake studies aimed at describing lake morphology, and for eventually deducing the surface area and volume of the lake.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of primary production and phytoplankton was studied in a polyhumic brownwater lake and in an oligo-mesohumic lake. During summer both lakes were thermally, chemically and biologically stratified. In the brownwater lake primary production was restricted to the uppermost layer of 1–1.5 m of epilimnion. In the oligo-mesohumic lake noticeable primary production was detected down to depths of 2–3 m. The ice-free period primary production was about 20% higher in the oligo-mesohumic lake, though occasionally the surface production was 2–3 times higher in the brownwater lake. Epilimnetic total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were higher in the brownwater lake, while nitrate-nitrite, ammonium and phosphate concentrations were very low in both lakes.
Phytoplankton was confined to the uppermost productive layer in the brownwater lake. In the oligo-mesohumic lake phytoplankton was distributed more evenly, though the mean maximum biomass was at the depth of 3–4 m. Below the oxic water layer biomass decreased abruptly in both lakes. In the oligo-mesohumic lake chlorophyll concentration was extremely high (max. 320 mg chl a m−3) in the anoxic hypolimnion, due to green sulphus bacteria.
Flagellated chlorophytes and thrysophytes dominated in the brownwater lake; in spring Chlamydomonas species, followed by Mallomonas caudata . In the oligo-mesohumic lake small coccal green algae, such as Oocystis, Scenedesmus and Westella -like species, dominated in mid-summer, and chrysophytes and cryptomonads in autumn.  相似文献

In January 2004, Lake St Lucia, a major part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, was reduced to a fraction of its normal capacity as a result of a severe drought in this region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. After rains in the area, the lake level rose and then fluctuated considerably over the next 42 months. During the first 38 months the mouth of the estuary into the sea was closed. The area entered a second severe period of prolonged drought from mid 2005 through to the spring of 2006. Great white pelican ( Pelecanus onocrotalus Linnaeus, 1758 ) numbers and lake levels were monitored during these 42 months. Pelican numbers were highly variable ranging from 0 to 6000. When lake levels were very low or too high, no pelicans were present. Pelican numbers appeared more indicative of food availability. Implications of these trends to the management of the lake and the conservation of the avifauna are discussed. It is suggested that the great white pelican could be used as an indicator species for the fish dynamics of the lake at medium to low lake levels.  相似文献

In connection with the liming of an acid lake in southern Norway, a series of litter bags was placed in a pH-gradient in the limed lake and a nearby unlimed lake. During the experiments, which lasted two years, no significant differences in decomposition rates between the various localities at the same depth were noticed. The chironomid collector Tanytarsus pallidicornis was the dominant invertebrate species in the benthic samples. This demonstrates the importance of fine particulate organic matter as a food source in the lake. Collector dominance was lower in the leaf packs, which consisted mostly of coarse particulate organic matter. A poor fauna of detritus grazers probably contributed to the unchanged rates of decomposition of the leaves after liming.  相似文献

We tested whether increased phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations would affect a lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) population in a small oligotrophic lake with a benthically dominated food web. From 1990 to 1994, nitrogen and phosphorus were added to Lake N1 (4.4 ha) at the arctic Long-Term Ecological Research site in Alaska. We used mark/recapture methods to determine the lake trout population size, size structure, recruitment, and individual growth from 1987 to 1999. Data were also collected on water chemistry and food availability. Fertilization resulted in increased pelagic primary productivity, chlorophyll a, turbidity, snail density, and hypoxia in summer and winter. Lake trout density was not affected by the manipulation however growth and average size increased. Recruitment was high initially, but declined throughout the fertilization. These results suggest that lake trout were affected through increased food availability and changes to the physical characteristics of the lake. During fertilization, hypoxia near the sediments may have killed over-wintering embryos and decreased habitat availability. Although lake trout responded strongly to increased nutrients, loss of recruitment might jeopardize lake trout persistence if arctic lakes undergo eutrophication.  相似文献

2009年4月至2010年1月,对西藏南部羊卓雍错的水鸟资源状况进行了调查。采用定点观察的方法,沿湖选择了24个观察点,分别在繁殖前期、中期和后期,以及秋季和冬季进行了6次调查。采用核密度分析(Kernel analysis)的方法,对两只卫星跟踪斑头雁(Anser indicus)的活动区进行了分析。调查期间,记录到水鸟32种31044只,隶属于6目10科。雁鸭类和鸥类分别占水鸟总数73.9%和19.1%,主要是斑头雁、赤嘴潜鸭(Rhodonessa rufina)、赤麻鸭(Tadorna ferruginea)、棕头鸥(Larus brunnicephalus)等。水鸟多样性较高的季节是春秋迁徙季节。羊卓雍错夏季主要的繁殖种群是斑头雁和棕头鸥,也有少量黑颈鹤(Grus nigricollis)的繁殖个体;冬季主要物种是赤嘴潜鸭,经常聚集在融化的冰面上。春季斑头雁的数量增加趋势较为明显;进入繁殖期后,斑头雁处于孵卵阶段,繁殖种群的数量达到2000余只;繁殖后期,斑头雁换羽结束,成鸟带领幼鸟在鸟岛附近的湖边取食,此时观察到斑头雁的数量又有明显的增加;秋季斑头雁的南迁致使种群数量呈下降趋势;冬季许多斑头雁从北方如青海湖等地迁来越冬使得种群数量有所增加,多分布于湖西浪卡子县城附近的沼泽湿地和湖南部的绒波臧布河流的入口处。卫星跟踪结果表明,羊卓雍错是青海湖繁殖的斑头雁重要的越冬地之一,湖西部沼泽湿地和湖南部的河流入口处是其主要活动区域,而且该湖与雅鲁藏布江河谷之间通过斑头雁的往来移动存在着联系,因而是西藏南部禽流感监测的重要地点。  相似文献

During the late eighties, the eutrophic shallow lake Neusiedlersee located at the austrian – hungarian border showed a massive development of cyanobacteria, which coincided with a strong decline of chlorococcales. Besides a change in nutrient conditions, allelopathy may have contributed to the dominance of cyanobacteria, too. To get a first insight into potential allelopathic effects, 13 cyanobacteria strains were tested originating for the most part from lake Neusiedlersee. Plate diffusion assays showed allelopathic activity of 6 strains indicating chemical interactions between cyanobacteria and other algae.  相似文献

From September 1978 till October 1979 limnological investigations of Lake Bled, Slovenia, were carried out at monthly intervals. Vertical profiles of physical and chemical variables and phytoplankton were determined. The effect of artificial inflow from the River Radovna on the lake was studied. The results indicate that the lake is still very eutrophic. During summer stratification the Radovna's inflow positively affects those variables whose dynamics depend on the lake's anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

The Naajaat lake in the Nuussuaq Basin on Disko and Nuussuaq formed in a geological setting between cratonic crystalline Precambrian rocks overlain by Cretaceous sediments and an actively forming Paleocene volcanic province. The lacustrine deposits, shales as well as hyaloclastite breccias, accumulated in low-lying areas inundated by fresh water and sealed off from marine transgressions by a broad subaerial volcanic terrain. Foreset-bedded hyaloclastite breccias demonstrate water depths of up to 450 m, and the area of the lake was 2500 km2 at its maximum extent. The lake probably existed for less than 0.5 million years. The lake received clay and silt from two provenance areas. Quartz contents of more than 25% in the majority of the sediment samples indicate that large amounts of material were continuously supplied to the lake from the crystalline terrain, whereas the volcanic terrain supplied smectite and mixed-layer minerals to the lake. High kaolinite contents stem from the crystalline or both provenance areas. The shales are characterized by high TOC (up to 11%), lack of pyrite, presence of terrestrial spores and pollen and lack of marine dinoflagellates. The lacustrine sediments rest on an erosional unconformity and its correlative conformity. The unconformity developed during the latest Cretaceous and Early Paleocene. Five stages are recognized in the geological development of the lake. Stages 1–4 are characterized by accumulation of hyaloclastite breccias, rise in lake level, and eventual transgression of subaerial terrains. The rises in lake level were caused by stemming of fluvial run-off behind the aggrading volcanic pile. Stage 5 corresponds to cessation of volcanic activity, a stable lake level, and progradation of clastic sediments, resulting in infilling of the lake. During the lacustrine transgression only sediment in suspension was transported into the central parts of the lake.  相似文献

Monitoring data were used to assess causes behind a recent shift from a clear-water to a turbid-water state in Lake Major, a 10 ha shallow lake in Hungary. In 1999–2000, fish manipulation was conducted in this hypertrophic lake. Reduced fish stock resulted in clearing water and the development of a dense (>80% coverage) submerged vegetation in 2005. During the recent abrupt shift, which occurred in 2007, submerged vegetation subsequently declined after a two-year period of clear water and abundant vegetation. An intense decay of macrophytes within the lake produced a rapid transition between the clear- and turbid-water states. During the clear-water state in 2005–2006, the most important variables predominantly correlating with macrophyte cover were Secchi transparency, temperature and TN, while TN, temperature, Secchi depth and chlorophyll-a were the most significant variables during the turbid-water state in 2007. Nitrogen may play a significant role in the cover of submerged macrophytes when TP is moderate. We argue that several factors in concert are necessary to initiate a shift. Water temperature likely has contributed to triggering shift through inter-year-dependent changes in cover of macrophytes, with fish recruitment having key roles in the dynamics of shallow lakes. The diel mixing patterns of two small floodplain lakes, Lago Jacaretinga in the Amazon drainage, and Lago Cristalino in the Rio Negro system, were investigated during both the high-water and low-water states of the Amazon River hydrograph. Measurements included temperature, oxygen, ammonia, phosphate, and chlorophyll. In both lakes thermal stratification developed during the day and was eroded at night. During the low-water period when the lakes were shallow, nocturnal circulation extended to the lake bottom, whereas when the lakes were deeper (greater than about 5 m), circulation did not reach the bottom and an anoxic hypolimnion developed. During the low-water period, percent of oxygen concentrations were relatively high but always less than saturation. Low oxygen concentrations were observed during the high-water period. At all times nocturnal mixing supplied a significant amount of oxygen to the lake ecosystems. Nighttime upward mixing of recycled nitrogen and phosphorus also appeared to be important nutrient sources for algal productivity.  相似文献

In order to compare riverine bacteria input with lake water bacterial production and grazing loss with output loss, a bacterial cell budget was constructed for humic Lake ?rtr?sket in northern Sweden. The riverine input of bacterial cells in 1997 represented 29% of the number of bacterial cells produced within the layer of the lake affected by inlet water. A large share of the in situ lake bacterial production was consumed by grazers, mainly flagellates, which stresses the importance of bacteria as energy mobilizers for the pelagic food web in the lake. The bacterial production in Lake ?rtr?sket, which is almost entirely dependent on humic material as an energy source, was clearly stimulated by high flow episodes which brought high amounts of little degraded material into the lake. During base flow condition the bacterial production in the inlet rivers was high, which led to an input of more degraded material to the lake. This material did not stimulate the lake bacterial production. Internal factors that determined the utilization of the allochthonous DOC in the lake were the retention time and the exposure to light and high temperatures. Thus, the potential for in situ production of bacteria in Lake ?rtr?sket was to a large extent a function of how precipitation and runoff conditions affected terrestrial losses and river transport of humic material.  相似文献

During 1980/1981, a twelve month study was carried out on the phytoplankton of Lough Corrib, a large freshwater lake in western Ireland. Cell counts indicated low phytoplankton productivity and this was reflected in low chlorophyll a values and high Secchi readings. Diatoms predominated in spring and were succeeded by blue-green algae in late summer. The spring diatom crop was apparently limited by either silicate or nitrogen. Mineral uptake by rooting macrophytes and benthic algae and phosphate recycling as a result of bottom sediment disturbance may be important elements in the nutrient cycling regime of the lake. Differences in morphology between the upper and lower basins of the lake are reflected, to some extent, in species composition and areal productivity.  相似文献

Ogelube is a tropical oligotrophic lake having a desmid dominated phytoplankton with maximum density during the warmest season. During the rainy season, the lake cools, phytoplankton declines and dominance shifts to algae other than desmids. The lake cools further as harmattan advances, while phytoplankton reaches its minimum, suggesting water temperature to be more important than other environmental conditions. Decrease in phytoplankton density with falling water temperature was probably due to slower reproduction, rather than to increased death rate.  相似文献

During summer stratification,Metallogenium personatun was found exclusively in the hypolimnion of Lake Washington where the oxygen tension was below 8 ppm. Numbers of the organism decreased in the lake immediately following turnover in October. Significant concentrations ofMetallogenium microcolonies did not recur until spring, after the lake had stratified. During stratification the distribution of particulate manganese closely followed the distribution ofMetallogenium. EDAX analysis, confirmed by electron microprobe analyses of the encrustation, showed that the primary component was manganese. Iron and some trace elements were also precipitated on the organism but to a lesser degree. In addition, phosphate, the primary substance limiting phytoplankton growth in Lake Washington, was found in the encrustation, indicatingMetallogenium maybe important in limiting algal blooms in the lake. Attempts to growMetallogenium in the laboratory were unsuccessful. This inability, combined with the negative results of thin-sectioning and acridine orange staining ofMetallogenium microcolonies, suggests that the microcolonial structures seen in Lake Washington are not a living form of an organism.  相似文献

Synopsis Winterkill lakes often have a characteristic fish community, presumably composed of species able to survive winter hypoxia. Our research on a small winterkill lake in northern Wisconsin indicates that fishes common in winterkill lakes have behavioral adaptations for tolerating or avoiding winter hypoxia. We examined the distribution of fishes within the lake during one winter (December through May), and fish migrations into and out of the lake for two consecutive years. As DO within the lake declined in late fall, adult-sized fishes of four species, brook stickleback, finescale dace, redbelly dace, and fathead minnow, moved to the ice-water interface where DO levels were highest. Stickleback, and to a lesser extent, fathead minnows, also moved toward the more highly oxygenated water near the inlet. During the first year, young-of-the-year fishes of blacknose shiner, Iowa darter, redbelly dace, and fathead minnow, avoided hypoxic conditions by emigrating from the lake via the outlet stream in late fall and early winter while DO within the lake was still relatively high. Blacknose shiner, redbelly dace, and fathead minnow returned to the lake in spring. Almost no fishes were trapped leaving the lake in the second fall-winter season. Central mudminnows neither moved to the ice-water interface nor emigrated from the lake as DO dropped. Mudminnows survive winter hypoxia by breathing oxygen-containing bubbles trapped beneath the ice. These relatively simple behavioral adaptations allow fishes to survive or avoid hypoxic conditions lethal to other species and may help explain the consistency in fish communities of winterkill lakes.  相似文献

Migration among populations is widely thought to undermine adaptive divergence, assuming gene flow arises from random movement of individuals. If individuals instead differ in dispersal behavior, phenotype‐dependent dispersal can reduce the effective rate of gene flow or even facilitate divergence. For example, parapatric populations of lake and stream stickleback tend to actively avoid dispersing into the adjoining habitat. However, the behavioral basis of this nonrandom dispersal was previously unknown. Here, we show that lake and stream stickleback exhibit divergent rheotactic responses (behavioral response to currents). During the breeding season, wild‐caught inlet stream stickleback were better than lake fish at maintaining position in currents, faced upstream more, and spent more time in low‐current areas. As a result, stream fish expended significantly less energy in currents than did lake fish. These divergent rheotactic responses likely contribute to divergent habitat use by lake and stream stickleback. Although rheotactic differences were absent in nonbreeding fish, divergent behavior of breeding‐season fish may suffice for assortative mating by breeding location. The resulting reproductive isolation between lake and stream fish may explain the fine‐scale evolutionary differentiation in parapatric stickleback populations.  相似文献
