The relationship between the size of a given mating male Carcinus maenas (L.) (Brachyura, Portunidae) and the size of the female with which it was paired was studied for 1248 pairs of crabs collected from the shore In 764 of these pairs the female was in pre-moult and so the pair were in pre-copula. In the remaining 484 pairs the female had already moulted and the pairs were in copula. There were significant correlations between the sizes of the males and females in both pre-copula and copula pairs. It was found that male Carcinus collected in mating pairs and tested in the laboratory were unable to distinguish between females in terms of their size or stage of pre-moult. The positive correlation between the sizes of males and females in mating pairs on the shore is proposed to be, in part, a function of a mechanical constraint of the size of female that a given male can hold, defend and copulate with. In addition, encounters between solitary males and males carrying females, resulting in the formation of new pairs, appear to enhance the size-related mating pattern observed.  相似文献

A large sample ofadult male Carcinus maenas was 79% right-handed and 21% left-handed. A separate sample of 207 intact adult males was divided into left-handed and right-handed crabs and four measurements were taken from all major and minor chelae. Correlation and regression analyses against carapace width on log-transformed data showed that major chelae of right-handed crabs grow proportionately higher with increasing size and the ideal mechanical advantage increases; concurrently, the fingers of the minor chelae grow proportionately longer. The data for left-handed crabs showed greater variability, especially for minor chelae, providing evidence for the concept that left-handedness arises by reversal of handedness following loss of the major chela from the right-hand side. Records of handedness in large samples of non-ocypodid heterochelous brachyuran crabs show a preponderance of right-handedness.  相似文献

The carotenoid pigments of the hepatopancreas, ovaries and epidermis of Carcinus maenas were investigated. The following pigments were identified: β-carotene, δ-carotene, echinenone, isocryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, flavoxanthin and astacene.
The relative abundance of these pigments in the three tissues and the presence of possible hydroxy and keto intermediates suggest the metabolism of astaxanthin from β-carotene. The metabolic pathway in Carcinus is discussed in relation to recent studies on other invertebrates.  相似文献

The optic ganglia neurosecretory cells of male and female Carcinus maenas during intermoult are distinguishable into six types based on size, location, appearance and method of secretory material release from the perikaryon. Release occurs via the sinus gland and also, in one case, directly into blood capillaries among the neurosecretory cells themselves. The sinus gland consists of axonal extensions of the neurosecretory cells; no secretory granules are produced there and nuclei observed between the axonal endings are those of ill-defined glial cells.  相似文献

Summary The sinus gland of Carcinus maenas consists of the swollen axonal endings of the neurosecretory cells of the major ganglia and acts as a storage release centre for the membrane bound neurosecretory material. These neurosecretory granules fall into five different types based on size and electron density. Their contents are released by exocytosis of the primary granules or smaller units budded from the primary granules.I thank Professor E. Naylor for his constant advice and Professor E. W. Major and minor chelae of Carcinus maenas were investigated with respect to mechanical advantage, angles of pennation and sarcomere lengths of the closer muscle fibres, maximum pinching forces induced by nervous stimulation and maximum stress in the closer muscles. Major chelae differed from minor chelae in all these factors. Mean mechanical advantages of major and minor chelae were 0·36 and 0·26, respectively. Angles of pennation were greater at the distal ends of closer muscles and declined proximally: in half open major and minor chelae distal to proximal angles were about 35–26° and 29–19°, respectively. Mean sarcomere lengths in closer muscles of fully closed major and minor chelae were significantly different at 7·6 and 6·0 fim, respectively; there was great variation within chelae and between crabs. Major chelae pinched more strongly than minor chelae due to higher mechanical advantages, larger closer apodemes and greater stress in the muscle. Mean maximum stresses in major and minor chelae were 677 and 474 kN/m2, respectively. The biggest stress recorded–1057 kN rrr2–was in a major chela. Pinching forces induced by injecting a high K+ and caffeine ringer were about 20% weaker than nervously stimulated pinches.  相似文献

Summary The phyllobranchiate gills of the green shore crab Carcinus maenas have been examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Each gill lamella is bounded by a chitinous cuticle. The apical surface of the branchial epithelium contacts this cuticle, and a basal lamina segregates the epithelium from an intralamellar hemocoel. In animals acclimated to normal sea water, five epithelial cell types can be identified in the lamellae of the posterior gills: chief cells, striated cells, pillar cells, nephrocytes, and glycocytes. Chief cells are the predominant cells in the branchial epithelium. They are squamous or low cuboidal and likely play a role in respiration. Striated cells, which are probably involved in ionoregulation, are also squamous or low cuboidal. Basal folds of the striated cells contain mitochondria and interdigitate with the bodies and processes of adjacent cells. Pillar cells span the hemocoel to link the proximal and distal sides of a lamella. Nephrocytes are large, spherical cells with voluminous vacuoles. They are rimmed by foot processes or pedicels and frequently associate with the pillar cells. Glycocytes are pleomorphic cells packed with glycogen granules and multigranular rosettes. The glycocytes often mingle with the nephrocytes. Inclusion of the nephrocytes and glycocytes as members of the branchial epithelium is justified by their participation in intercellular junctions and their position internal to the epithelial basal lamina.  相似文献

A cytological observation, using conventional fixing and staining, is made on the hemopoietic tissue in the crab, Carcinus maenas. The hemopoietic organ is formed by nodules grouping different cell types; nodules are surrounded by a limiting layer including collagenous filaments and material looking like basal lamina. Some fibrocytes and semi-granulous hemocytes are lining this limited layer. These hemocytes, more or less flattened, are transforming in fibrocytes. Fibroblast-like cells, with well developed intercellular junctions, are the first cell type: their dedifferentiation gives rise to isolated mitoting cells. We have named these mitoting cells "hemocytoblast". They are stem cells for hyaline hemocytes. Fibroblast-like cells can be compared with "reticular cells" in Insects. Uncertainty exists as to the formation and evolution of nodules.  相似文献

Ilyoplax pusillus (De Haan, 1835) was sometimes found to build an earthen structure, termed a barricade, close to its neighbour's burrow. Most barricaders were males > 6.4 mm in carapace width. Either males or females were barricaded and almost all of them were smaller than their barricaders. Burrow to burrow distance between a barricader and its barricaded neighbour ranged from 1.6 to 7.2 cm. The home range of a barricaded crab was biased toward the areas devoid of the barricade, i.e. to other directions than the barricader's burrow, in either the presence or absence of the barricader. When a barricade was removed, the crab freed from it extended its home range towards the barricader's burrow. If the crab freed from a barricade moved towards the barricader, the former was frequently repelled by the latter. These findings suggest that barricades function as an aid to territorial defence by deterring invasion by a neighbour.  相似文献

An assessment of the global freshwater crab diversity is presented. A total of 1,476 species in 14 families are currently known from all zoogeographical regions (except Antarctica), including 1,306 species in eight exclusively freshwater families (Pseudothelphusidae, Trichodactylidae, Potamonautidae, Deckeniidae, Platythelphusidae, Potamidae, Gecarcinucidae and Parathelphusidae). Estimates of true freshwater crab diversity including likely numbers of undescribed taxa suggest that the field remains largely in a “discovery” phase. Main ideas on the origins, diversification, and phylogeny of true freshwater crabs are briefly discussed. The economic importance of freshwater crabs is also highlighted. Guest editors: E. V. Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 is a widespread coastal crab species throughout the Mediterranean Sea with a pelagic larval phase. This species tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions and typically inhabits fragmented habitats, such as embayments, lagoons and estuaries. It is therefore a good candidate species for studying and testing different phylogeographical hypotheses in the Mediterranean Sea. By contrast to its Atlantic sister species, Carcinus maenas, studies on the population genetic structure of C. aestuarii in its native range are still scarce. In the present study, specimens from along the European Mediterranean Sea were collected and DNA‐sequenced and analyses were applied to discriminate between present day and historical factors influencing the population genetic structure of this species. The results obtained demonstrate the existence of two genetically distinct geographical groups, corresponding to the eastern and western Mediterranean, with further subdivision within the East Mediterranean Basin. A strong asymmetric gene flow was recorded toward the Eastern Basin, which may play a crucial role in shaping the present day biogeographical patterns of this species and potentially other sympatric ones with pelagic larvae. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 771–790.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Estimation of the activity of pyruvate kinase and pyruvate carboxylase in the hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas gave values of 28.5 and 7.4 units/g wet wt tissue respectively.
  • 2.2. The concentrations of substrates, products and allosteric effectors of these enzymes in hepatopancreas were measured.
  • 3.3. The activities of pyruvate kinase and pyruvate carboxylase were redetermined using the approximate physiological range of substrate and effectors.
  • 4.4. Under these conditions the effective activity of pyruvate kinase could be decreased to less than 2 units/g wet wt tissue whereas that for the pyruvate carboxylase was 2.6 units/g wet wt tissue indicating that a net synthesis of phosphoenolpyruvate could occur in vivo.

Leverage and muscle type in crab chelae (Crustacea: Brachyura)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The chelae of Cancer pagurus and Macropipus depurator were examined with respect to mechanical advantage. The closer muscles were investigated with respect to sarcomere length in the constituent fibres and to the force developed by the whole muscle during isometric contraction. Cancer chelae have a relatively high mechanical advantage, 0.329 ± 001. Cancer closer muscles contain a high proportion of fibres with long sarcomeres, mean lengths mostly falling between 12 and 15 μm, and develop a maximum stress of about 496 kN.m−2 during contraction. These figures are typical for "slow" crustacean muscle. The chelae of M. depurator are dimorphic. In one, the strong chela, the mechanical advantage is 0.248 ± 0.066 while in the other, the fast chela, the mechanical advantage is 0.177 ± 0.006. M. depurator closer muscles contain fibres with mean sarcomere lengths mostly falling between 6 and 10 μm. The muscle develops a maximum stress of about 145 kN.m2 during contraction. These figures are typical of "intermediate" crustacean muscles. "Fast" muscle fibres with short sarcomeres (about 30 um) were found in the chelae of both Cancer and M. depurator but were much commoner in the latter. Thus in Cancer a high mechanical advantage is correlated with slow muscle while in M. depurator lower mechanical advantages are broadly correlated with faster muscle. Consistent correlation between mechanical advantage and muscle type in the dimorphic chelae of M. depurator , however, is lacking. No consistent regionation of fibres with similar properties was found in the muscles.  相似文献
