Malladaites nov. gen. et Spinammatoceras (Hammatoceratidae,Ammonitina) de l'Aalénien de la zone subbétique,Sud de l'Espagne

The aim of this paper is to remark some morphologicaldifferences among the type-species of the genus ZurcheriaDouvillé and those species attributed to this genuf by Buckman & Brasil: the group of H. pugnaxVacek for which Schindewolf (1964) defined the genus Spinammatoceras, and the group of H. pertinaxVacek for which we propose Malladaites gen. nov.; new species of both genera are described. The stratigraphical range of these species is established in the Betic Cordillera.     

Epidémie de dysentérie bacillaire.

An outbreak of bacillary dysentery in 1978 affecting 928 persons, most of whom were living in the village of St-Jacques, PQ, is described. An epidemiologic study suggested the water supply as the source of the infection, and it was established that the water carried by the municipal aqueduct was contaminated by feces containing the causal agent, Shigella sonnei. This epidemic, the largest mentioned in he Canadian medical literature, demonstrates how contagious this infection is.     

Ultrastructure des disques de patte de drosophile cultivésin vitro. Evagination,sécrétion de la cuticule nymphale et apolysis

Summary Ultrastructural observations were made on imaginal leg discs ofDrosophila cultured in vitro in Mandaron's medium M in the presence of - or -ecdysone.During evagination of discs in vitro the tight epidermal folds of the disc flatten out progressively and the cells change their shape.As the discs evaginate, the pupal cuticle is secreted at the apex of the cells: it comprises a three-layered cuticulin, an epicuticle and a thick endocuticle. Secretion of pupal cuticle always starts by the appearance of dense deposits at the apex of microvilli. Only the latter apparently participate in the construction of the three successive layers of the pupal cuticle.During disc development an abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum is formed. Nuclei and nucleoli become progressively enlarged. At the same time, the nucleus, initially located near the base of the cell, moves closer to the apical cell surface. Microtubules become fragmented as soon as evagination begins and are reorientated parallel to the cell surface (i.e. parallel to the new long axis of the cell) at the end of evagination.

List of the specimens of Hepaticae collected by R.P. Assel in Ivory Coast. Data include 11 species of Hepaticae recorded for the first time from this bryologically underexplored area.

The protohistoric rock engravings of the region of Mount Bego, located in the Alpes-Maritimes, in the municipality of Tende, include more than 40,000 figurative engravings, such as corniforms, daggers, halberds, axes, reticulates, appendage reticulate, rectangular or oval beaches, anthropomorphs, geometric figures and radiant circles that we consider as an ideogram and more than 60,000 non-figurative signs, such as isolated cupules, isolated cupules of cells, small beaches of cupules, scattered clouds of cupules, bars, which although not figurative are all highly significant. All these engravings, inscribed on more than 4150 rocks spread over 1500 hectares, in eight high mountain valleys, most often made with small cups, were not carried out at random. They have been traced in relation to economic concerns, cosmogonic myths and cultural traditions of the farming and pastoral peoples of the Copper Age and the Early Bronze Age of the Southern Alps during propitiatory rites. It was a period corresponding to the climatic optimum of Chalcolithic where during the summer, in the lower valleys, cultivated fields and pastures dried up. The economic preoccupations of the populations who then occupied the regions located on both sides of the Southern Alps were essentially turned towards the search for water to irrigate cultivated fields and pastures, as evidenced by the petroglyphs inscribed on the rocks: sinuous lines evoking creeks or irrigation canals, rectangular or oval beaches, water catch basins, isolated wells, isolated wells, wells or scattered cups of rain or reticulates, which represent cultivated fields and pastures connected to natural holes or cracks that evoke springs and streams. During propitiatory rites, the engravers addressed the god of the storm, master of the lightning and dispenser of the fertilizing rain, to the great goddess, goddess-mother or goddess-Earth, arms raised in a position of receptivity for collect rain from the sky and bring in spring, with the return of vegetation, abundance to humans.

Peroxidase catalase, IAA-oxidase and polyphenol content of growing barley coleoptile. Effect of kinetin. - Kinetin strongly inhibits root and coleoptile growth of germinating barley in the dark. Treated coleoptiles become senescent before the untreated ones. Soluble proteins content, peroxidase, catalase and IAA-oxidase activity were greatly increased in treated coleoptiles while the level of polyphenols was reduced. These biochemical effects joined with the other property of kinetin to diminish α-amylase synthesis in the endosperm are discussed in relation to growth and in connection with the classic view of a cytokinin retarded senescence.

Summary Mutants of E. coli, completely devoid of nitrite reductase activity with glucose or formate as donor were studied. Biochemical analysis indicates that they are simultaneously affected in nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, fumarate reductase and hydrogenase activities as well as in cytochrome c₅₅₂ biosynthesis. The use of an antiserum specific for nitrate reductase shows that the nitrate reductase protein is probably missing. Prévalence d'Aeromonas spp. dans les gastro-entérites de l'enfant.

A selective medium and biochemical tests were used to search for Aeromonas spp. in the stools of 536 children, more than 90% of whom had "gastroenteritis", seen at Sainte-Justine Hospital, Montreal, in June or July 1986. The organism was found in seven children, six of whom had bloody diarrhea. One of the six, a 6 1/2-year-old boy, required intravenous alimentation and later manifested ulcerative colitis; the other five recovered. The remaining child, a 14-year-old boy, had synovitis of the knee and spondylarthritis. Two of the seven carried other enteric pathogens. The authors discuss the pathogenicity of Aeromonas spp., which is not very marked in temperate climates, in human summer diarrhea and its possible role in the development of ulcerative colitis.     

Testostérone circulante et cancer de la prostate. Revue de données récentes

In vitro andin vivo studies show that androgens stimulate prostate cancer. However, evidence from epidemiological studies of an association between circulating levels of androgens and prostate cancer risk has been inconsistent, but most studies have likely been undersized given that the association may be relatively weak. We review prospective studies on the association of serum levels of free and total testosterone, the principal androgen in circulation with risk of prostate cancer. No significant association between total or free testosterone and risk of prostate cancer was found in studies that together included 1,525 cases of prostate cancer and 4,349 controls. No support was found for the hypothesis that high levels of circulating testosterone within a physiological range stimulate development and growth of prostate cancer. Intraprostatic androgen metabolism may still be of importance for prostate cancer development.     

Variations de l'incidence des fractures de l'extrémité supérieure du fémur chez les personnes agées de la région de Québec.

To estimate the incidence of fracture of the proximal end of the femur in people aged 50 years or older living in the Quebec area in 1971, 1976 and 1981 we determined the number of admissions for such fractures to the 15 acute care hospitals in the region. From 1971 to 1981 the number of fractures increased by 71%; the increases for those aged 75 to 84 years and 85 years or over were 98% and 118% respectively. The variation is only partly explained by changes in sex and age distribution of the population; the incidence rates also increased. Among men aged 75 to 84 years the incidence rate per 1000 person-years rose from 2.63 in 1971 to 5.22 in 1981, an increase of 98%; the corresponding figures for men aged 85 years or more were 9.76 and 16.91, an increase of 73%. Among women aged 75 to 84 years the rate rose from 7.28 to 8.81, an increase of 21%; the corresponding figures for women aged 85 years or more were 20.40 and 24.27, an increase of 21% and 19% respectively.     

Quelques données sur l'ultrastructure de récepteurs gustatifs de l'antenne de la fourmi Camponotus vagus scop. (Hymenoptera,Formicinae)

Résumé Le dernier article du funicule de l'antenne de Camponotus vagus possède un petit nombre de soies sensorielles articulées, innervées chacune par six neurones.Les six dendrites sont d'abord emballés dans une gaine cuticulaire commune; cette dernière, par un processus d'invagination se divise en deux. L'une des deux gaines ainsi formées accompagne l'un des dendrites — de gros diamètre — jusqu'à l'articulation; à ce niveau le dendrite présente une densification apicale tout à fait caractéristique des mécanorécepteurs. L'autre enveloppe cuticulaire entoure les cinq dendrites restants et les accompagne jusqu'à l'extrémité de la soie perforée par un pore unique qu'ils atteignent sans jamais se ramifier. Le role de la double fonction sensorielle de ces récepteurs est discuté.

Some ultrastructural results obtained on the antennal gustative receptors of Camponotus vagus Scop. (Hymenoptera, Formicinae)

Summary The antennae of the worker of Camponotus vagus bears sensory articulated setae on the last article of the funiculus; each of them is innervated by six neurons. The six dendrites are initially surrounded by a common cuticular sheath which divides into two by an invaginating process. One, with the largest dendrite inside, extends to the articulation, and shows an apical densification characteristic of mechanoreceptors. The second cuticular sheath surrounds the five other dendrites and reaches the apex of the seta, which is open by only one pore. The dendrites are not ramified. The double sensory function of the receptor is discussed.
