Abstract Much recent work in the field of biohydrometallurgy has been directed to the study of bio-oxidation of gold ores by acidophilic iron and sulfur oxidizing microorganisms. This work has been done worldwide and has resulted in several pilot plant and commercial scale operations for gold ore bio-oxidation. Bioleaching of gold by metabolic products of microorganisms has received less attention, but also offers opportunities for industrial application, especially if future regulations restrict the use of cyanide. This paper reviews recent progress in the use of microorganisms tooxidize the sulfidic matrix in refractory gold ores (bio-oxidation) and to solubilize elemental gold (bioleaching).  相似文献

Microorganisms have been geologically active in mineral formation, mineral diagenesis and sedimentation via direct action of their enzymes or indirectly through chemical action of their metabolic products. This property of microorganisms is being harnessed during the recent years for extraction of metals from their ores, especially from low-grade ores. In the present study bioleaching of copper from its low-grade chalcopyrite ore using 26 isolates of acidophilic fungi is reported. Most of these fungal strains belonged to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium and Rhizopus. The leaching experiments were conducted in Czepek Dox minimal medium containing 1% (100 mesh) ore with shaking at room temperature for 20 days. Out of these, 4 isolates exhibited significant bioleaching activities. Maximum leaching of copper (78 mg/L) was observed with Aspergillus flavus (DSF-8) and Aspergillus niger (DOF-1). Nutritional and environmental conditions for optimum bioleaching were standardized. Present study indicates the usefulness of acidophilic fungi in bioleaching of copper from its low-grade ores.  相似文献

Summary The value of iron ore is adversely affected by phosphorus in concentrations over 0.03% by weight. The present research concerns the use of metabolic products of aPenicillium-like fungus to leach insoluble phosphates (hydroxyapatite) from ores. Ion chromatography was used to measure metabolism of glucose into acidic fragments. The rate and products of glucose degradation depended on both the chemical composition of the growth medium (buffered or not) and incubation conditions (shaken or quiescent). The principal products were identified as oxalic acid and isomers of propylene dicarboxylic acid, mainly itaconic acid. Continued, slow metabolism of itaconic acid generates more oxalic acid. Aliphatic acids were not detected. Both iron ore phosphate and calcium phosphate were partially solubilized by either the spent broth or aqueous oxalic acid. Solubilization of ore phosphorus was greatly assisted by hydrochloric acid added to the spent broth in small increments. The data suggest biological alternatives to costly leaching procedures that use only mineral acids.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted on microbial leaching of non-sulphide nickel ores not amenable to conventional mineral processing operations. The results showed that extensive low-grade laterite domestic sources are generally amenable to bioleaching when micro-organisms were cultivated in the presence of the ore. Nickel recoveries were as high as 60% using hydroxycarboxylic acid producing strains of Aspergillus and Penicillium codes A3, P2. Cobalt recovery achieved was around 50%. Losses of soluble nickel in the fungal biomass were found to be 3.5–10.8%. Chemical analysis of the leach liquors showed the presence of significant amounts of citric, oxalic and other organic acids, indicating that leaching may be ascribed to the production of these metabolic products of fungal activity.  相似文献

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is a gram-negative, highly acidophilic (pH 1.5 to 2.0), autotrophic bacterium that obtains its energy through the oxidation of ferrous iron or reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. It is usually dominant in the mixed bacterial populations that are used industrially for the extraction of metals such as copper and uranium from their ores. More recently, these bacterial consortia have been used for the biooxidation of refractory gold-bearing arsenopyrite ores prior to the recovery of gold by cyanidation. The commercial use of T. ferrooxidans has led to an increasing interest in the genetics and molecular biology of the bacterium. Initial investigations were aimed at determining whether the unique physiology and specialized habitat of T. ferrooxidans had been accompanied by a high degree of genetic drift from other gram-negative bacteria. Early genetic studies were comparative in nature and concerned the isolation of genes such as nifHDK, glnA, and recA, which are widespread among bacteria. From a molecular biology viewpoint, T. ferrooxidans appears to be a typical member of the proteobacteria. In most instances, cloned gene promoters and protein products have been functional in Escherichia coli. Although T. ferrooxidans has proved difficult to transform with DNA, research on indigenous plasmids and the isolation of the T. ferrooxidans merA gene have resulted in the development of a low-efficiency electroporation system for one strain of T. ferrooxidans. The most recent studies have focused on the molecular genetics of the pathways associated with nitrogen metabolism, carbon dioxide fixation, and components of the energy-producing mechanisms.  相似文献

Leaching of various types of ores, containing 12-30% manganese, by the thiobacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. Leaching of reduced ores (manganocalcite and manganiferous limestone) was mediated mainly by degradation of manganiferous minerals (by sulfuric acid produced in the course of bacterial oxidation of pyrite or sulfur). Bacterial treatment of the ores for 144 and 192 h allowed solubilization of 96-98% of manganese. Inoculation of bacteria into pulp with pyrite increased the rate of leaching of oxide ore (psilomelane) by 37%, and the degree of its extraction within 180 h increased from 80 to 97%.  相似文献

Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans was isolated in this laboratory from uranium ores mined at Jaduguda, Bihar. Investigations on a laboratory scale indicated that this organism could leach uranium from ores. Pyruvic acid (10-4 M) was found to inhibit growth of F. ferrooxidans as well as leaching of uranium ore by F. ferrooxidans . However, in the presence of a red pigmented Rhodotorula yeast isolated from the same ores, the pyruvate inhibition was found to be reversed.  相似文献

The present study investigates the isotopic composition of anthropogenic boron (B) and its potential affects on the environment. The isotopic ratios of B in synthetic products from the main ores in the world have been measured by negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The data show that the isotopic compositions of Na-borate products and washing powders overlap with those of natural Na-borate minerals. In contrast, the11B/10B ratios of synthetic Ca-borate and Na/Ca borate products are significantly lower (by 15 permil) and overlap with those of the natural Ca-borate minerals. Consequently, the original isotopic signature of natural borate minerals is not modified during the manufacturing process of synthetic products. The B isotopic composition of domestic wastewater from Israel and Riverside, California suggests that B in sewage is derived from Na-borate components used in detergents. Since B, like other inorganic ions, is not removed during conventional sewage treatment, it accumulates in domestic wastewater. Although the B concentration in pristine groundwaters is generally low (<0.05 mg/L), contaminant sources (e.g., wastewater) are relatively enriched in B (0.5–1 mg/L). The isotopically distinguished signature of borate compounds is used to trace groundwater contamination.  相似文献

Microorganisms are important in metal recovery from ores, particularly sulfide ores. Copper, zinc, gold, etc. can be recovered from sulfide ores by microbial leaching. Mineral solubilization is achieved both by 'direct (contact) leaching' by bacteria and by 'indirect leaching' by ferric iron (Fe(3+)) that is regenerated from ferrous iron (Fe(2+)) by bacterial oxidation. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is the most studied organism in microbial leaching, but other iron- or sulfide/sulfur-oxidizing bacteria as well as archaea are potential microbial agents for metal leaching at high temperature or low pH environment. Oxidation of iron or sulfur can be selectively controlled leading to solubilization of desired metals leaving undesired metals (e.g., Fe) behind. Microbial contribution is obvious even in electrochemistry of galvanic interactions between minerals.  相似文献

Product Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment Using Input-Output Techniques   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Life-cycle assessment (LCA) facilitates a systems view in environmental evaluation of products, materials, and processes. Life-cycle assessment attempts to quantify environmental burdens over the entire life-cycle of a product from raw material extraction, manufacturing, and use to ultimate disposal. However, current methods for LCA suffer from problems of subjective boundary definition, inflexibility, high cost, data confidentiality, and aggregation.
This paper proposes alternative models to conduct quick, cost effective, and yet comprehensive life-cycle assessments. The core of the analytical model consists of the 498 sector economic input-output tables for the U.S. economy augmented with various sector-level environmental impact vectors. The environmental impacts covered include global warming, acidification, energy use, non-renewable ores consumption, eutrophication, conventional pollutant emissions and toxic releases to the environment. Alternative models are proposed for environmental assessment of individual products, processes, and life-cycle stages by selective disaggregation of aggregate input-output data or by creation of hypothetical new commodity sectors. To demonstrate the method, a case study comparing the life-cycle environmental performance of steel and plastic automobile fuel tank systems is presented.  相似文献

Abstract

The bioleaching efficiency and mechanism of recovery of cobalt (Co) and nickel from laterites and pyritic ores by Aspergillus niger were investigated. Recoveries of Co from laterites and pyritic ores by direct bioleaching were 65.9?±?1.8% and 4.9?±?2.7%, respectively, while 30.9?±?0.6% and 10.9?±?6.2% recovery of Ni were obtained from laterites and pyritic ores, respectively. Recovery of Co via indirect bioleaching in the absence of the fungal biomass from laterite was significantly lower when compared with Co released by direct bioleaching. In the latter, hyphal penetration and colonization of the laterites were clearly observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis of mineral phases before and after bioleaching indicated that cobalt-bearing goethite was the main phase bioleached in the laterites. No significant difference was found between Co recoveries from synthesized cobalt-bearing goethite by both direct and indirect bioleaching. Therefore, we propose that two processes are involved in bioleaching from laterites: (1) cobalt-bearing goethite was exposed via direct interactions between the fungus and the minerals and (2) cobalt-bearing goethite was dissolved by released metabolites of A. niger, such as organic acids. An incongruent pattern of Co and Fe bioleaching from the laterites was also a feature of the metal recovery process.  相似文献

Recently, there is strong interest on microbe-mineral interactions. This is related also to recent expanded knowledges on extremely severe environments in which microbes live. Interaction between microbes and minerals contains biomineralization processes. Varieties of biomineralization products are found not only in various geologic materials and processes in the earth's history but also in present surface environments. Some hot springs represent such environments similar to those of unique and extremely severe environments for life. In this short review, the author briefly shows some examples of biomineralizations at some hot springs and mineral springs, Japan. In such environments, iron ore was formed and some varieties of growing stromatolites were found. The varieties of stromatolite are siliceous, calcic and manganese types. Cyanobacteria and the other bacteria are related to form the stromatolite structure. In the Gunma iron ore, sedimentary iron ores were mineralogically described in order to evaluate the role of microorganisms and plants in ore formation. The iron ore is composed of nanocrystalline goethite. Algal fossils are clearly preserved in some ores. Various products of biomineralization are found in the present pH 2-3, Fe2(+)- and SO4(2-)-rich streams. Bacterial precipitation had variations from amorphous Fe-P-(S) precipitates near the outlet of mineral spring, to Fe-P-S precipitates and to Fe-S-(P) precipitates. Mosses and green algae are also collecting Fe precipitates in and around the living and dead cells. The Gunma Iron Ore can be said as Biologically Induced Iron Ore. At Onikobe and Akakura hot springs, growing stromatolites of siliceous and calcareous types, were found, respectively. At Onikobe, The stromatolites grow especially near the geyser. Cyanobacterial filaments in stromatolite were well preserved in the siliceous and calcic stromatolites. The filaments oriented in two directions which form the layered structures were found. At Yunokoya hot spring, black and brittle stromatolitic structures which were composed of amorphous Mn minerals are growing. The form of these structures are hemispherical. Many bacteria that were coated with amorphous Mn minerals were found on these structures. Furthermore, Precambrian (Proterozoic : Wittenoom-Chichester region, western Australia) manganese stromatolite was briefly shown in comparison. The black stromatolite has been clarified to be composed of todorokite. Small spotty and donuts-like shaped todorokite aggregates which are very similar to biologically induced Mn-precipitates were found in massive dolomite layers.  相似文献

The phosphate deposits are used mainly as raw materials in the fertilizer industry. However, toxic elements content in both phosphate ores and final mining products has received little attention. The present study used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine levels of toxic elements in phosphate deposits in Al-Hisa and Al-Abyad mines, Jordan. Concentrations of elements were converted into rock content based on the ICP-MS results and compared using an enrichment-factor (EF) method that normalized to the mean concentration of elements in crustal rock. The results showed that the U, V, and Hg were enriched in the Jordanian deposits compared to the average worldwide phosphate (AWP), whereas lower enrichments of Pb were found in the Jordanian deposits (JP). Other trace elements had similar levels in Jordanian deposits comparable to worldwide averages of phosphates. Concentrations of U, V, and Cd in Jordanian phosphate deposits were greater than the permissible limits for soils for growing crops established by the European Community (EC) and World Health Organization (WHO). Finally, Jordanian phosphate deposits show the highest enrichment of Hg and U, thus can be regarded as U-bearing.  相似文献

Organic acids that are excreted by microorganisms dissolve nickel from lateritic ores. In chemical leaching experiments, fifteen organic acids were tested in the concentration range of 0.05–0.5 M. The most effective were hydroxycarboxylic acids. The leaching of nickel is dependent on the type of mineralization. With completely limonitized ore, no mobilization occurred, while up to 90% of the nickel was extracted from silicate-bearing laterites by 0.5 M citric acid. In biological leaching tests, Penicillium was found to be the most effective microorganism. After improvement of the leaching conditions, up to 70% of the nickel was extracted at considerably lower citric acid concentrations than with the chemical leaching process. Generally, leaching of nickel from lateritic ores with heterotrophic microorganisms is possible and seems to be promising. Possibilities for future investigations are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Three cyanobacterial isolates (two LPP-B forms and one Anabaena or Nostoc species) from different environments could mobilize uranium from low-grade ores. After 80 days, up to 18% uranium had been extracted from coal and 51% from carbonate rock by the filamentous cyanobacterium OL3, a LPP-B form. Low growth requirements with regard to light and temperature optima make this strain a possible candidate for leaching neutral and alkaline low-grade uranium ores.  相似文献

We have studied the matrilineal genetic composition of the Madeira and Açores north Atlantic archipelagos, which were settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Both archipelagos, and particularly Madeira, were involved in a complex commercial network established by the Portuguese, which included the trading of slaves across the Atlantic. One hundred and fifty-five mtDNAs sampled from the Madeira and 179 from the Açores archipelagos were analysed for the hypervariable segment I (HVS-I), and for haplogroup-diagnostic coding-region RFLPs. The different settlement histories of both groups of islands are well reflected in their present day mtDNA pool. Although both archipelagos show identical diversity values, they are clearly different in their haplogroup content. Madeira displays a stronger sub-Saharan imprint, with haplogroups L1–L3 constituting about 13% of the lineages. Also, the relative frequencies of L sub-clusters in Madeira and mainland Portugal suggests that, at least in part, African presence in Madeira can be attributed to a direct gene flow from West Africa and not via Portugal. A comparison of the genetic composition of these two archipelagos with the Canary Islands, specially taking into account that their European source population was essentially from the Iberian Peninsula, testifies the stronger impact of the North African U6 cluster in the Canaries. This group is present in Madeira at a moderate frequency, but very reduced in the Açores. Nevertheless the recorded introduction of Canary native Guanches, who are characterized by the presence of particular sub-clade U6b1, has left no detectable imprints in the present day population of Madeira.  相似文献

Formulations of Bacillus sphaericus products were applied in 1-m columns of clean water and sewage water in tubes. Samples taken through valves attached to the walls of the tubes showed that spores settled as a function of application method, droplet size, particle size, and water characteristics. In a mixture of deionized and tap water, the slowest sedimentation rate was obtained with a primary powder sonicated in water with 0.1% detergent. This product and a commercial fluid product settled faster in sewage water than in clean water and after 4 weeks, most spores were found in the sediment. In clean water, most spores remained suspended during the 4 weeks but the density was highest at the bottom. Calculation of total spore numbers in the columns after 4 weeks indicated that about 90% of spores disappeared in clean water, and 95-97% disappeared in sewage water. Bioassays showed that toxicity declined in parallel with the sedimentation, but at a higher rate, indicating a loss of toxicity from the residual spores.  相似文献

Urban ores can be classified into two types—those made up of items that were in the possession of consumers, such as end‐of‐life home appliances, and those that were not, such as manufacturing wastes. The dephosphorization slag generated at some steelmaking plants is an example of a manufacturing waste. In this study, the potential for this slag to become a new phosphorous resource is evaluated in terms of total material requirement (TMR). To do this, we compare two types of TMR—natural ore TMR (NO‐TMR) and urban ore TMR (UO‐TMR)—defined respectively as the TMR to obtain or recycle 1 kilogram of phosphoric acid from natural phosphate ore or dephosphorization slag. In the dephosphorization slag process, the slag is magnetically separated into a phosphorous‐rich (PR) phase and an iron‐rich (IR) phase, and the phosphorous in the PR phase is subsequently converted to phosphoric acid. We included case studies that considered generation of potentially useful by‐products, such as phosphogypsum and the IR phase. The effect of declines in natural phosphate ore grade on the potential recyclability of phosphoric acid from dephosphorization slag was also explored. In addition, the effect of changes in the slag's contribution to the UO‐TMR of phosphoric acid was considered. We found that, in many scenarios, the UO‐TMR for phosphoric acid was lower than its NO‐TMR. This indicates that dephosphorization slag has the potential to be a new phosphorous resource. We also found that recycling of the IR phase by recharging it to the blast furnace plays an important role in improving the potential feasibility of slag as a new phosphorous resource. The value of the slag stream, relative to the value of the pig iron stream, is also a key parameter, with low relative values improving the potential for production of phosphoric acid. Evaluating the UO‐TMR of materials recovered from manufacturing waste streams promises to be a useful tool for assessing the potential of these waste streams to serve as urban ores.  相似文献
