A taxonomic study of theSesleria juncifolia complex in the Italian Peninsula is presented, with a focus on southern Italian populations here named asSesleria calabrica (Deyl)Di Pietro comb. nov. et stat. nov. Karylological, morphological and anatomical characters were used for comparative analyses with populations of closely related species, such asS. juncifolia Suffren andSesleria apennina Ujhelyi occurring in the Italian Peninsula. Multivariate and univariate morphometric analyses, and qualitative morphological characters showed a distinct position ofS. calabrica. Populations ofS. calabrica differ in respect to various morphological characters of leaf and spikelet, such as the glume, lemma and palea length, stem length, the leaf sheath, leaf width, leaf thickness, and the total number of vascular bundles. Furthermore, previous karyological studies demonstrated that all the populations of bothS. juncifolia andS. apennina examined are octopolid (2n=8x=56), whereasS. calabrica was found to be dodecaploid (2n=12x=84).S. calabrica is strictly confined to the Pollino massif and the Orsomarso mountains in southern Italy, which represent the southernmost limit of theSesleria juncifolia complex distribution area both in Italy and in Europe. In addition toS. juncifolia andS. calabrica, the recognition ofS. apennina as a taxon distinct fromS. juncifolia is supported, at least for the area of the Apuan Alps.  相似文献

We used a combination of molecular-phylogenetic inference of 82 ITS rDNA sequences and anatomical approach to describe three new west African thelephoroid species, namely Tomentella afrostuposa, T. guineensis and T. guinkoi. Anatomically, T. afrostuposa is reminiscent of T. stuposa with globose to broadly ellipsoid large basidiospores of 8–14 μm, long aculei of up to 3 μm and prominent apiculi of 2 μm width. Molecular-phylogenetically, it falls within the T. stuposa complex. However, T. afrostuposa deviates by at least 7.80–10.74% from T. stuposa in regard with the ITS rDNA sequences. Tomentella guineensis is characterised by long (up to 85 μm) utriform basidia, the presence of reniform basidiospores in lateral view (up to 9 μm) with aculei not exceeding 1 μm and a strong cyanescent reaction of the subhymenial hyphae and basidia in 2.5% KOH. It forms a sister species of the newly described species Tomentella maroana; however, deviating from the last species by at least 9.75–10.04%. The very short, inflated (up to 14 μm) and thick-walled septate (septa up to 1.5 μm) subhymenial hyphae combined with ellipsoid basidiospores (up to 8 μm) and short aculei not exceeding 0.5 μm characterise Tomentella guinkoi. Anatomically, T. guinkoi recalls T. ellisii. Genetic distance between both species ranges from 12.67 to 13.73% according to ITS rDNA sequences analyses. Tomentella guinkoi forms a sister species of the group composed of T. ellisii, T. hjortstamiana and T. pisoniae. Detailed anatomical comparisons between the newly described species and their close relatives are given.  相似文献

Understanding the drivers of species adaptations to changing environments on the one hand and the limits for hybridization on the other hand is among the hottest questions in evolutionary biology. Parasites represent one of the major selective forces driving host evolution and at least those with free‐living stages are at the same time dependent on the ecological conditions of their host's habitat. Local immunological adaptations of host species to varying parasite pressure are therefore expected and might represent the genetic basis for ecological speciation and the maintenance of recently diverged species. Madagascar provides one of the rare examples where two partially sympatric primate species (Microcebus griseorufus, M. murinus) and their hybrids, as well as an allopatric species (M. cf rufus) live in close proximity along a very steep environmental gradient ranging from southern dry spiny bush to gallery forest to evergreen eastern humid rain forest, thus mimicking the situation encountered during extensions and retreats of vegetation formations under changing climatic conditions. This system was used to study parasite infection and immune gene (MHC) adaptations to varying parasite pressure that might provide selective advantages to pure species over hybrids. Parasite burdens increased with increasing humidity. M. griseorufus, M. murinus, and their hybrids but not M. rufus shared the same MHC alleles, indicating either retention of ancestral polymorphism or recent gene flow. The hybrids had much higher prevalence of intestinal parasites than either of the parent species living under identical environmental conditions. The different representation of parasites can indicate a handicap for hybrids that maintains species identities.  相似文献

The genus Hypochaeris has a recent evolutionary history caused by long‐distance dispersal in conjunction with adaptive radiation in the South American continent. Hypochaeris lutea is a perennial herb that grows mostly at altitudes of around 1000 m in cold swamps of the southern regions of Brazil. We investigated the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in 270 individuals representing 11 Brazilian populations of H. lutea to elucidate the population genetic structure of this species. The frequencies of polymorphic loci and gene diversity ranged from 83.42% to 91.66% and from 0.26 to 0.34, respectively. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that most of the genetic variability was found within (76.67%) rather than among (23.3%) populations, agreeing with the pattern of genetic distribution within and among populations observed in other allogamous species of Hypochaeris. A Mantel test showed no correlation between genetic and geographic distances when all populations were considered. Simulations performed using a Bayesian approach consistently identified two clusters with different admixture proportions of individuals, as also revealed by a UPGMA dendrogram of populations. The pattern of genetic structure observed in H. lutea is consistent with a process of successive colonization events by long‐distance dispersal resembling the rapid and recent radiation that has been proposed to explain the origin of the South American species of Hypochaeris.  相似文献

Fragmentation of the habitat due to glaciations, fires and human activities affected the distribution range of Araucaria araucana in southern South America. On the borders of the Argentinean Patagonian steppe, the species is restricted to isolated patches without natural regeneration. Our objective is to test the hypothesis that these populations are relicts of pre-Pleistocene origin. A total of 224 individuals from 16 populations were sampled. Twenty chloroplast microsatellites, 19 non-coding chloroplast DNA regions and eight mitochondrial DNA fragments were screened for polymorphisms. A low transferability rate of universal primers from Pinaceae and also a low variation were detected for this ancient species. Only one non-coding region of the chloroplast DNA showed polymorphism allowing the identification of five haplotypes. A low genetic differentiation (G ST  = 0.11; G′ ST  = 0.267) and lack of geographic structure was found. Allelic richness was lower and genetic differentiation higher among the eastern isolated populations, suggesting a long lasting persistence. Conservation guidelines are given for these relictual populations, which are located outside the limits of the National Parks.  相似文献

Dipturus wuhanlingi, a new rajid species, is described from an immature male and female collected from the southern East China Sea and off Haimen, Shantou, in the South China Sea, respectively. The specimens conform to the genus Dipturus in having the combination of the following characters: a long rostral cartilage (length more than 60% of dorsal head length), greatly depressed and laterally expanded mesocondyle, and a total length greater than 55 cm when adult. Dipturus wuhanlingi is distinct from all other Dipturus species in the following combination of characters: a pair of scapular thorns, three or four nuchal thorns, an irregular row of lumbar thorns along the dorsal midline of the disc, a single row of tail thorns in both sexes, pores of ampullae of Lorenzini extending to just anterior to the pelvic girdle, anterior fenestra of scapulocoracoid strongly horizontally elliptical, mesocondyle located at about the middle between the procondyle and metacondyle, and three pairs of obturator foramina on the pelvic girdle.  相似文献

Summary   Lecomtedoxa plumosa Burgt (Sapotaceae), a new tree species from the southern part of Korup National Park in Cameroon, is described and illustrated. The flowers show the characteristics of the genus Lecomtedoxa: for example the staminodes are free and placed alternately to the stamens and corolla lobes. The leaves of the new species are clearly different from other Lecomtedoxa spp., but they look similar to the leaves of Gluema ivorensis, especially to those of the collections from Cameroon. In total 26 trees ≥ 10 cm dbh were found. The largest trees found were 36 m high and 74 cm dbh. The trees grow in primary rain forest, in clusters of up to 10 trees on 2 ha, mixed with many other tree species. The seed dispersal is ballistic. The conservation status of the species is assessed as Endangered, EN D.  相似文献

Knowledge of threatened species’ distributions is essential for effective conservation decision‐making. Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used to map species’ geographic ranges, identify new areas of suitable habitat and guide field surveys. In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, there are grave doubts about whether populations of the critically endangered long‐footed potoroo (Potorous longipes) remain extant, and identification of occupied sites is a high priority for its conservation. We used an SDM (Maxent) to identify regions in NSW that may have suitable habitat for the potoroo. The SDM was built with seven climate layers and had strong predictive performance (cross‐validated AUC = 0.94). We then combined this information on habitat suitability with vegetation and topography, to identify 58 survey sites across NSW. From April 2016 to May 2017, we undertook six field trips deploying six to eight cameras at each site for 52–63 days, resulting in 25 120 camera trap nights. A total of 215 759 images captured 43 native and feral animal species, but no long‐footed potoroos. Following the survey, newly available, independent presence and absence data were used to validate our model. A Kruskal–Wallis H test indicated that habitat suitability values were significantly higher at presence locations than absence locations (H = 58.66, d.f. = 1, P < 0.001). Finally, we refitted the Maxent model with the new data and identified additional regions that future surveys could explore. We conclude, however, that if the long‐footed potoroo remains extant in NSW, it is extremely rare.  相似文献

The southern blue‐ringed octopus, Hapalochlaena maculosa (Hoyle, 1883) lacks a planktonic dispersal phase, yet ranges across Australia's southern coastline. This species’ brief and holobenthic life history suggests gene flow might be limited, leaving distant populations prone to strong genetic divergence. This study used 17,523 genome‐wide SNP loci to investigate genetic structuring and local adaptation patterns of H. maculosa among eight sampling sites along its reported range. Within sites, interrelatedness was very high, consistent with the limited dispersal of this taxon. However, inbreeding coefficients were proportionally lower among sites where substructuring was not detected, suggesting H. maculosa might possess a mechanism for inbreeding avoidance. Genetic divergence was extremely high among all sites, with the greatest divergence observed between both ends of the distribution, Fremantle, WA, and Stanley, TAS. Genetic distances closely followed an isolation by geographic distance pattern. Outlier analyses revealed distinct selection signatures at all sites, with the strongest divergence reported between Fremantle and the other Western Australian sites. Phylogenetic reconstructions using the described sister taxon H. fasciata (Hoyle, 1886) further supported that the genetic divergence between distal H. maculosa sites in this study was equivalent to that of between established heterospecifics within this genus. However, it is advocated that taxonomic delineations within this species should be made with caution. These data indicate that H. maculosa forms a clinal species pattern across its geographic range, with gene flow present through allele sharing between adjacent populations. Morphological investigations are recommended for a robust resolution of the taxonomic identity and ecotype boundaries of this species.  相似文献

Hypnea has an intricate nomenclatural history due to a wide pantropical distribution and considerable morphological variation. Recent molecular studies have provided further clarification on the systematics of the genus; however, species of uncertain affinities remain due to flawed taxonomic identification. Detailed analyses coupled with literature review indicated a strong relationship among H. aspera, H. cervicornis, H. flexicaulis, and H. tenuis, suggesting a need for further taxonomic studies. Here, we analyzed sequences from two molecular markers (COI‐5P and rbcL) and performed several DNA‐based delimitation methods (mBGD, ABGD, SPN, PTP and GMYC). These molecular approaches were contrasted with morphological and phylogenetic evidence from type specimens and/or topotype collections of related species under a conservative approach. Our results demonstrate that H. aspera and H. flexicaulis represent heterotypic synonyms of H. cervicornis and indicate the existence of a misidentified Hypnea species, widely distributed on the Brazilian coast, described here as a new species: H. brasiliensis. Finally, inconsistencies observed among our results based on six different species delimitation methods evidence the need for adequate sampling and marker choice for different methods.  相似文献

Symphurus hondoensis Hubbs, 1915, originally described only from the holotype taken in 390–542 m in Suruga Bay Japan, has long been considered a junior synonym ofS. strictus Gilbert, 1905, known from waters off Hawaii, Japan, the Philippine Islands, and South Africa. Based on new information from the holotype and a specimen recently captured from deep waters (789–815 m) off Amami-Oshima Island, southern Japan,S. hondoensis is now established as a valid species.Symphurus hondoensis is unique among congeners in having the combination of a 1–2–3 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal pterygiophores and neural spines, 10 abdominal vertebrae, 14 caudalfin rays, 111–113 dorsal-fin rays, 95 anal-fin rays, 59 total vertebrae, 105–106 scales in longitudinal series, blind side nearly as darkly pigmented as the ocular surface, and a black peritoneum. Recognition ofS. hondoensis increases the number of described species ofSymphurus in waters off Japan to three (S. orientalis Bleeker,S. strictus, andS. hondoensis), with at least one more underscribed species occurring in deepwater hydrothermal vent areas off southern Japan.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) were determined for nine fish species occurring in the Three Gorges Reservoir(28°56′–31°44′N, 106°14′–111°28′E). Fish were collected using gill nets, including two of 1.0 m depth, 100 m long, and mesh size of 0.5 cm; two of 1.0 m deepth, 150 m long, and mesh size of 2.0 cm; and one of 1.5 m deepth, 100 m long, and mesh size of 6.0 cm. Gill nets were set over night including different habitats (riffles and pools, vegetated and non vegetated zones) from seven sites seasonally from January 2014 to January 2018. The first LWR reference for Jinshaia abbreviata (Günther, 1892), and Triplophysa tanggulaensis (Zhu, 1982) and new maximum lengths for other seven species are provided when comparing with records given in the international electronic databank FishBase (Froese & Pauly, FishBase. We conducted this study to find genetic evidence to distinguish the members of Pacific abalone species complex (Haliotis discus hannai, H. discus discus, H. madaka, and H. gigantea) based on microsatellite DNA markers, illustrating the potential of microsatellites for species-assignment. First, we addressed the transferability of H. discus hannai microsatellites to the three other members of Pacific abalone and five additional species (H. diversicolor aquatilis, H. midae, H. corrugata, H. fulgens, and H. rubra). Second, using the microsatellites we applied two types of individual assignment testing (the distance-based assignment and Bayesian model-based clustering) to individuals from the Pacific abalone species. A total of 24 microsatellites were subjected to PCR trials for nine Haliotis species, and the cross-species amplification performance of these markers turned out to drop precipitously even for less divergent congeners. Within the Pacific abalone species complex, four of the 24 markers were not transferable to H. gigantea, suggesting a solid genetic boundary between H. gigantea and H. discus hannai, H. discus discus, and H. madaka. Among the three latter abalones, both assignment tests achieved approximately 90% or more success rate of assignment. The feasibility of the microsatellite markers to classify species sheds light on the genetic management of the Pacific abalone species complex. The systematics of the eelpout genus Bothrocara Bean 1890 is reviewed on the basis of 941 specimens. Eight mostly eurybathic, demersal species are recognized, distributed mainly along the continental slopes of the North and South Pacific oceans, with one species entering the South Atlantic. Distributions are: B. brunneum ranges from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Gulf of Panama at depths of 199–1,829 m; B. elongatum ranges from the Gulf of Panama to Chile at depths of 720–1,866 m; B. hollandi ranges from the Sea of Japan to the southeastern Bering Sea at depths of 150–1,980 m; B. molle ranges from the western Bering Sea to the South Atlantic at depths of 106–2,688 m; B. nyx is known only from the eastern Bering Sea at depths of 790–1,508 m; B. pusillum ranges from the northern Bering Sea to British Columbia, Canada, at depths of 55–642 m; B. tanakae is found along the northern coasts of Honshu and Hokkaido islands, Japan, at depths of 274–892 m; B. zestum ranges from the Izu Islands, Japan, and central Honshu, Japan, to the Gulf of Alaska at depths of 199–1,620 m (an unidentifiable specimen from off Taiwan may be B. zestum). The species are distinguished from one another mainly on the basis of head pore patterns, gill raker morphology, coloration and various meristic and morphometric values. Montane ecosystems are more prone to invasions by exotic plant species than previously thought. Besides abiotic factors, such as climate and soil properties, plant-plant interactions within communities are likely to affect the performance of potential invaders in their exotic range. The biotic resistance hypothesis predicts that high indigenous species richness hampers plant invasions. The biotic acceptance hypothesis, on the other hand, predicts a positive relationship between indigenous and exotic species richness. We tested these two hypotheses using observational data along an elevational gradient in a southern African biodiversity hotspot. Species composition data of indigenous and exotic plants were recorded in 20 road verge plots along a gradient of 1775–2775 m a.s.l. in the Drakensberg, South Africa. Plots were 2?×?50 m in size and positioned at 50 m elevational intervals. We found a negative correlation between indigenous and exotic richness for locations with poorly developed mineral soils, suggesting biotic resistance through competitive interactions. A strong positive correlation for plots with very shallow soils at high elevations indicated a lack of biotic resistance and the possibility of facilitating interactions in harsher environments. These results suggest that biotic resistance is restricted to the lower and mid elevations while biotic acceptance prevails in presence of severe abiotic stress, potentially increasing the risk of plant invasions into montane biodiversity hotspots.

The tropical Andes are a global hotspot of avian diversity that is characterized by dramatic elevational shifts in community composition and a preponderance of recently evolved species. Bird habitats in the Andes span a nearly twofold range of atmospheric pressure that poses challenges for respiration, thermoregulation, water balance and powered flight, but the extent to which physiological constraints limit species' elevational distributions is poorly understood. We report a previously unknown hybrid zone between recently diverged flycatchers (Aves, Tyrannidae) with partially overlapping elevational ranges. The southern Anairetes reguloides has a broad elevational range (0–4200 m), while the northern Anairetes nigrocristatus is restricted to high elevations (>2200 m). We found hybrids in central Peru at elevations between ~3100 and 3800 m, with A. nigrocristatus above this elevation and A. reguloides below. We analysed variation in haematology, heart mass, morphometrics, plumage and one mitochondrial and three nuclear loci across an elevational transect that encompasses the hybrid zone. Phenotypic traits and genetic markers all showed steep clines across the hybrid zone. Haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, mean cellular haemoglobin concentration and relative heart mass each increased at altitude more strongly in A. reguloides than in A. nigrocristatus. These findings suggest that A. nigrocristatus is more resistant than A. reguloides to high‐altitude hypoxic respiratory stress. Considering that the ancestor of the genus is suggested to have been restricted to high elevations, A. reguloides may be secondarily adapted to low altitude. We conclude that differential respiratory specialization on atmospheric pressure combined with competitive exclusion maintains replacement along an elevational contour, despite interbreeding.  相似文献

The structure of spermatozoa is described for two species of polynoid polychaete,Harmothoe imbricata andHarmothoe impar, from material fixed and examined by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The two species undergo spermiogenesis within discrete testes. The testis ofH. imbricata is shown to have a layer of epithelial cells which possess an outer cuticular layer and a microvillous inner surface. Spermatocytes of both species are spherical but there are marked differences in the shape and size of the spermatozoa of the two species.H. impar has a classical primitive spermatozoon with a rounded head (2 μm long) and a button-shaped acrosome. Fully differentiated spermatozoa ofH. imbricata are modified from the primitive form by having a long head (10 μm length) with a pointed acrosome about 6 μm in length. Spermatozoa ofH. imbricata have a ring of up to fourteen mitochondria around a centrally inserted flagellum at the posterior whereasH. impar has a ring of four or five spherical mitochondria. Spermiogenesis is well synchronised inH. imbricata but all developmental stages can be found simultaneously in the testis ofH. impar. The differences in sperm structure of the two species may be related to differences in breeding biology which are hitherto unknown.  相似文献

Changes in the physical environment with elevation can influence species distributions and their morphological traits. In mountainous regions, steep temperature gradients can result in patterns of ecological partitioning among species that potentially increases their vulnerability to climate change. We collected data on species distributions, relative abundance and body size for three grasshopper species of the genus Kosciuscola (K. usitatus, K. tristis and K. cognatus) at three locations within the mountainous Kosciuszko National Park in Australia (Thredbo, Guthega and Jagungal). All three species showed differences in their distributions according to elevation, with K. usitatus ranging from 1400 to 2000 m asl, K. tristis from 1600 to 2000 m asl and K. cognatus from 1550 to 1900 m asl. Decreasing relative abundance with increasing elevation was found for K. usitatus, but the opposite pattern was found for K. tristis. The relative abundance of K. cognatus did not change with elevation but was negatively correlated with foliage cover. Body size decreased with elevation in both male and female K. usitatus, which was similarly observed in female K. tristis and male K. cognatus. Our results demonstrate spatial partitioning of species distributions and clines in body size in relation to elevational gradients. Species‐specific sensitivities to climatic gradients may help to predict the persistence of this grasshopper assemblage under climate change.  相似文献

Dongjiang River, a main tributary of the Pearl River, is geographically situated in South China. The present study describes the length–weight relationships (LWRs) of six fish species (Acrossocheilus paradoxus, Barbodes semifasciolatus, Onychostoma elongatum, Microphysogobio fukiensis, Microphysogobio kiatingensis, Metzia lineata) from the headstream region of the river including five Chinese endemic species (A. paradoxus, B. semifasciolatu, O. elongatum, Mi. fukiensis, Mi. kiatingensis). Fish species of five genera of the same family were collected quarterly from April 2012 to October 2014 by using non‐selective fishing gears: drag nets (5 m, mesh‐size 3 cm), drift gillnets (30 × 15 m, mesh‐size 5 mm), fish cages (4 m, mouth opening 40 × 40 cm), scoop nets (mesh‐size 0.5‐1 cm), and electro‐fishing (12V, 200 Hz). The parameter a and b in the LWR equations (W = a Lb) ranged from 0.0014 to 0.0228, and 2.89 to 3.18, respectively. Compared with FishBase, this study provides the first LWR records for four cyprinids (A. paradoxus, B. semifasciolatu, O. elongatum, Me. lineata) and a new record of maximum body length for O. elongatum.  相似文献
