1. Seasonal variation in microhabitat use and activity of 14 giant kokopu Galaxias argenteus, a drift‐feeding galaxiid fish, was compared using radiotelemetry. 2. During winter giant kokopu predominantly used low velocities and intermediate depths by night and day. Activity recorded during 24 and 72 h periods indicated that fish were consistently active at night and inactive during the day. Activity data corresponded with point‐in‐time habitat use data, both of which indicated that fish were concealed amongst cover during the day and used open water habitats at night. 3. During summer, giant kokopu used higher water velocities, shallower depths and coarser substrata, particularly at night but also occasionally during the day relative to winter. Giant kokopu were active by both day and night in summer, although periods of activity were less defined and less predictable than during winter. 4. Adults used predictable home reaches at base‐flow, with most individuals repeatedly using of one or two cover locations within their ‘home’ reach. Reaches used by fish were relatively short (rarely exceeding 26 m) irrespective of season and always included a single pool‐riffle sequence. 5. Diel and seasonal behaviour of giant kokopu was generally comparable with that exhibited by other drift feeding fish species in small temperate streams. However, the nocturnal activity of giant kokopu contrasts with activity patterns in various salmonids, indicating that the impact of predation by different drift feeding fish may vary considerably.

Predation risk can affect habitat selection by water column stream fish and crayfish, but little is known regarding effects of predation risk on habitat selection by benthic fish or assemblages of fish and crayfish. I used comparative studies and manipulative field experiments to determine whether, (1) habitat selection by stream fish and crayfish is affected by predation risk, and (2) benthic fish, water column fish, and crayfish differ in their habitat selection and response to predation risk. Snorkeling was used to observe fish and crayfish in, (1) unmanipulated stream pools with and without large smallmouth bass predators (Micropterus dolomieui >200 mm total length, TL) and (2) manipulated stream pools before and after addition of a single large smallmouth bass, to determine if prey size and presence of large fish predators affected habitat selection. Observations of microhabitat use were compared with microhabitat availability to determine microhabitat selection. Small fish (60–100 mm TL, except darters that were 30–100 mm TL) and crayfish (40–100 mm rostrum to telson length; TL) had significantly reduced densities in pools with large bass, whereas densities of large fish and crayfish (> 100 mm TL) did not differ significantly between pools with and without large bass. Small orangethroat darters (Etheostoma spectabile), northern crayfish (Orconectes virilis), and creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus) showed significantly greater densities in pools without large bass. The presence of large smallmouth bass did not significantly affect depths selected by fish and crayfish, except minnows, which were found significantly more often at medium depths when bass were present. Small minnows and large and small crayfish showed the greatest response to additions of bass to stream pools by moving away from bass locations and into shallow water. Small darters and sunfish showed an intermediate response, whereas large minnows showed no significant response to bass additions. Response to predation risk was dependent on prey size and species, with preferred prey, crayfish and small minnows, showing the greatest response. Small benthic fish, such as darters, are intermediate between small water column fish and crayfish and large water column fish in their risk of predation from large smallmouth bass.

1. Numerous interacting abiotic and biotic factors influence niche use and assemblage structure of freshwater fishes, but the strength of each factor changes with spatial scale. Few studies have examined the role of interspecific competition in structuring stream fish assemblages across spatial scales. We used field and laboratory approaches to examine microhabitat partitioning and the effect of interspecific competition on microhabitat use in two sympatric stream fishes (Galaxias‘southern’ and Galaxias gollumoides) at large (among streams and among sites within streams) and small (within artificial stream channels) spatial scales. 2. Diurnal microhabitat partitioning and interspecific competition at large spatial scales were analysed among three sympatry streams (streams with allotopic and syntopic sites; three separate catchments) and four allopatry streams (streams with only allotopic sites; two separate catchments). Electro‐fishing was used to sample habitat use of fishes at 30 random points within each site by quantifying four variables for each individual: water velocity, depth, distance to nearest cover and substratum size. Habitat availability was then quantified for each site by measuring those variables at each of 50 random points. Diet and stable isotope partitioning was analysed from syntopic sites only. Diel cycles of microhabitat use and interspecific competition at small spatial scales were examined by monitoring water velocity use over 48 h in artificial stream channels for three treatments: (i) allopatric G. ‘southern’ (10 G. ‘southern’); (ii) allopatric G. gollumoides (10 G. gollumoides) and (iii) sympatry (five individuals of each species). 3. One hundred and ninety‐four G. ‘southern’ and 239 G. gollumoides were sampled across all seven streams, and habitat availability between the two species was similar among all sites. Galaxias‘southern’ utilised faster water velocities than G. gollumoides in both the field and in channel experiments. Both species utilised faster water velocities in channels at night than during the day. Diet differences were observed and were supported by isotopic differences (two of three sites). No interspecific differences were observed for the other three microhabitat variables in the field, and multivariate habitat selection did not differ between species. Interspecific competition had no effect on microhabitat use of either species against any variable either in the field (large scale) or in channels (small scale). 4. The results suggest that niche partitioning occurs along a subset of microhabitat variables (water velocity use and diet). Interspecific competition does not appear to be a major biotic factor controlling microhabitat use by these sympatric taxa at any spatial scale. The results further suggest that stream fish assemblages are not primarily structured by biotic factors, reinforcing other studies de‐emphasising interspecific competition.

Habitat selection decisions by consumers has the potential to shape ecosystems. Understanding the factors that influence habitat selection is therefore critical to understanding ecosystem function. This is especially true of mesoconsumers because they provide the link between upper and lower tropic levels. We examined the factors influencing microhabitat selection of marine mesoconsumers – juvenile giant shovelnose rays (Glaucostegus typus), reticulate whiprays (Himantura uarnak), and pink whiprays (H. fai) – in a coastal ecosystem with intact predator and prey populations and marked spatial and temporal thermal heterogeneity. Using a combination of belt transects and data on water temperature, tidal height, prey abundance, predator abundance and ray behavior, we found that giant shovelnose rays and reticulate whiprays were most often found resting in nearshore microhabitats, especially at low tidal heights during the warm season. Microhabitat selection did not match predictions derived from distributions of prey. Although at a course scale, ray distributions appeared to match predictions of behavioral thermoregulation theory, fine-scale examination revealed a mismatch. The selection of the shallow nearshore microhabitat at low tidal heights during periods of high predator abundance (warm season) suggests that this microhabitat may serve as a refuge, although it may come with metabolic costs due to higher temperatures. The results of this study highlight the importance of predators in the habitat selection decisions of mesoconsumers and that within thermal gradients, factors, such as predation risk, must be considered in addition to behavioral thermoregulation to explain habitat selection decisions. Furthermore, increasing water temperatures predicted by climate change may result in complex trade-offs that might have important implications for ecosystem dynamics.

The selection of habitat by macroinvertebrates living in running waters may be influenced by the physical characteristics of the substratum, as well as by the presence of other species. In this study, an artificial river with three different substrata (pebbles, detritus, and leaves) was utilized to analyze the microhabitat preference of two Plecoptera prey species (Amphinemura sulcicollis and Brachyptera risi), both in absence and in presence of a Plecoptera predator species (Perla marginata). In the absence of predators, both prey species showed a clear preference for the leaf microhabitat. When the predators were present, only Brachyptera risi showed a change of microhabitat selection, with a decrease of leaves and an increase of pebbles and detritus utilization. Amphinemura sulcicollis did not change their substratum utilization. This study demonstrates that the presence of a predator may affect microhabitat selection through a switch from the preferred to the less preferred substrata, although not all species change their habitat utilization in response to predator presence. Microhabitat suitability models are useful tools to enhance the reintroduction success of fish. Since 2008, a translocation and reintroduction program has been carried out in Flanders to prevent substantial loss of genetic variability in the Cottus perifretum (bullhead) population, and to meet the goals set by the Habitat Directive. To this end, habitat suitability of potential headstreams was assessed on a macrohabitat and microhabitat scale prior to the reintroduction. On a macrohabitat scale, water quality, habitat structure, food availability, and fish community were screened. Based on microhabitat models for bullhead in the summer period, microhabitat suitability was assessed in headstreams where macrohabitat characteristics showed a high potential for success. Both macro‐ and microhabitat assessment showed that reintroduction of bullheads in the Nellebeek, Bruelbeek, and Mollendaalbeek would most likely lead to self‐sustaining populations. For the Sint‐Annabeek, the microhabitat suitability model, considering depth and stream velocity, estimates that 7.5–9.5% of the headstream is suitable for bullhead. However, when substratum is taken into account, the microhabitat suitability index shows that only 4.3–5.8% of the brook is suitable. The current habitat quality and quantity in the Sint‐Annabeek is estimated to support a mean total population of 812 bullheads. However, the microhabitat suitability can be substantially improved by the artificial deposition of medium‐sized gravel (5–50 mm) and large gravel (50–100 mm). By doing so, the mean estimated population size could increase up to 1,330 individuals. Our results show that habitat improvement is necessary prior to the reintroduction of bullheads in the Sint‐Annabeek.

Although the effects of abiotic factors on species distributions and habitat selection have been widely investigated, studies have rarely succeeded at identifying the factors behind selection at the microhabitat level. Spider webs are extended phenotypes expected to be subject to fitness trade-offs. We tested the hypothesis that spiders with three-dimensional webs (tangle and sheet-and-tangle), which require more material to be built than two-dimensional orbicular webs, occupy microhabitats where they are better protected from strong rains. We show that tangle and sheet-and-tangle webs were indeed significantly more likely to be under immediate cover than expected by chance and than orb webs. Tangle webs occurred closest to the cover and were largely protected, whereas sheet-and-tangle webs, likely due to their larger size and mostly horizontal position, tended to be more exposed. Sheet-and-tangle webs, however, occurred more often against tree trunks, where we show rain to be less intense. We further show that the proportion of 3D webs under immediate cover increased with annual precipitation along a dry to wet gradient in western Ecuador, an effect absent for 2D webs. The latter finding suggests that, in addition to using leaves for structural support, spiders with 3D webs seek microhabitat locations to shelter themselves and their webs from strong rains. Our findings illustrate how microhabitat selection may allow organisms to cope with abiotic factors at broader geographical scales, thus influencing organismal fitness and community structure.

This study examined how habitat associations changed with ontogeny in the tiger tail seahorse Hippocampus comes Cantor, 1850, over four reef zones in a coral reef ecosystem. Hippocampus comes showed ontogenetic differences in their use of habitat at the scale of reef zones (macrohabitat) and holdfasts (microhabitat). Across reef zones, juvenile size classes (25–105 mm standard length, L S) were most abundant in wild macroalgal beds ( Sargassum spp.) (55·7%), while adults (>105 mm L S) occupied both coral reefs (39·7%) and macroalgal beds (42·7%). Microhabitat use also varied with ontogeny. Juveniles generally used macroalgal holdfasts, while adults >135 mm L S used a greater diversity of specialized microhabitats that included branching sponges, branching corals and tall seagrass. Ontogenetic changes in habitat association, as well as size-related shifts in crypsis and aggregation, suggest that H. comes experiences fitness trade-offs that vary with size; juveniles may associate with habitat that reduces predation, while larger individuals may use distinct microhabitat in reef zones to optimize reproductive success. Results are discussed in the context of targeted exploitation, expanding artisanal mariculture, habitat damage from illegal fishing and reserve design.

This study analysed the microhabitat use of three endangered fish species, Andalusian toothcarp Aphanius baeticus , Iberian loach Cobitis paludica and sand smelt Atherina boyeri , in a coastal stream stretch. Plastic minnow traps were set both during daytime and at night on the bottom and at the surface. Depth and presence of effective refuge were recorded for each trap. To assess size‐related changes in microhabitat use individuals of each species were classified in three size classes. The three species preferentially used bottom positions in the water column, though this behaviour was more evident in the case of Iberian loach. While large Iberian loach remained active at night Andalusian toothcarp and sand smelt were strongly diurnal, especially larger individuals. The three species showed a clear ontogenetic change in microhabitat preferences towards deeper waters. Small Andalusian toothcarp and medium‐sized Iberian loach used deeper microhabitat in the presence of refuge. Large Andalusian toothcarp consistently preferred exposed microhabitat at any time. Andalusian toothcarp using refuge were smaller at any time, while Iberian loach followed this pattern only at night. The differential vulnerability of these species to different predators (aerial and aquatic; diurnal and nocturnal) could explain the observed patterns in microhabitat use. Fish tended to co‐occur in microhabitats either due to habitat characteristics independently of species or due to species independently of habitat. Andalusian toothcarp segregated spatio‐temporally from sand smelt and Iberian loach, but these species occurred independently of each other. According to these co‐occurrence patterns, Andalusian toothcarp would be more sensitive than Iberian loach or sand smelt to interspecific interactions.

Habitat selection by fluvial lamprey larvae, Lethenteron reissneri (Petromyzontidae), was studied in a natural stream and an experimental aquarium to clarify microhabitat requirements for future conservation of natural populations. A gross collection survey of lamprey larvae in the Monbetsu River, southeastern Hokkaido, Japan, revealed a remarkable bias toward distribution in sandy-mud beds. An analysis using Jacobs' electivity index showed that the larvae selectively utilized spaces having regard to shallow water, weak current, deep sandy-mud, and fine substrate particles. A comparison of microhabitat use between small- (≤5 cm) and large-sized larvae (>5 cm) indicated that the latter utilized the space with greater ranges in both water depth and substrate particle size than the former. Both the field survey and laboratory experiments on larval selectivity of physical habitat variables clearly demonstrated that substrate particle size was the most important variable for small-sized larvae whereas both water depth and substrate depth were more important for large larvae. These findings should be applicable in directing attempts at fluvial habitat restoration for conservation of this endangered lamprey species. Three main hypotheses have been put forward to explain size-assortative pairing in gammarid amphipods: microhabitat separation, sexual selection and loading constraint. In order to determine which hypothesis best explains this phenomenon in the estuarine species Gammarus zaddachi, I first measured the body lengths and dry weights of precopula pairs collected from two field sites with substantially different current speeds. Second, I performed three laboratory experiments in order to estimate the importance of the following processes: (1) male choice; (2) male–male competition and (3) male–female acceptability. The loading constraint hypothesis seemed best supported by the data in that field-collected male G. zaddachi size correlated well with female size in precopula pairing in both fast and slow flowing water. In the laboratory, males preferred females of their same size group (large versus small), and ‘won’ them in the male–male competition experiments. Size-assortative pairing is thus likely a consequence of the loading constraints imposed upon these males by virtue of them having to carry and manoeuvre their partners through flowing water, while attempting to maintain station in an optimal microhabitat. Males may therefore forego the largest, most fecund females, in favour of a practicable payload (small male–large female pairings were rare). However, there seems to be a lower limit to this selection, indicated by the high degree of cannibalism on small females by large males.

Longfin eels Anguilla dieffenbachii caught by electrofishing, in Lee Stream, a tributary of the Taieri River, New Zealand, were significantly longer in pools than in riffles, particularly in summer. Longfin eels were generally shorter in sites with willow. More longfin eels were caught at pasture sites than tussock sites with fewest at sites with willow. Sites judged difficult to access by commercial fishermen had longfin eels that were significantly longer than those in easy-access sites. More than 80% of longfin eels were captured within 270 mm of banks. The first three components of a principal component analysis explained 40·3% of the variability in microhabitat character recorded at both the capture location and within 0·5 m of capture, and from random locations in each riparian category. Variables strongly associated with longfin eel capture locations were maximum depth (longfin eels used microhabitat of intermediate depth), distance to pool (intermediate), sediment size (finer), sediment depth (deeper), stream idth (intermediate) and flow velocity (slower). Overall there was a greater icrohabitat range in tussock sites but diurnal microhabitat use was most similar to what was available in pasture streams. Winter longfin eel locations were characterized by deeper and finer sediments in contrast to summer and spring locations.

Migratory banded kokopu Galaxias fasciatus juveniles exhibited an attraction to adult odours and an avoidance towards suspended sediment with a turbidity of 25 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) in a two-choice chamber apparatus. When the adult odours were mixed with suspended sediment at a turbidity of 25 or 35 NTU, an attraction towards the odour and suspended sediment chamber resulted. When adult odours were paired with turbid water at 50 NTU, juveniles would avoid the odour and suspended sediment chamber. These results demonstrate adult pheromones can increase the threshold for an avoidance response to suspended sediment in banded kokopu juveniles. This provides supporting evidence that odours released by adult conspecifics may provide an important migratory cue for juveniles in stream and habitat selection.

Microhabitat selectivity, resource partitioning, and niche shifts in five species of grazing caddisfly larvae (Glossosoma califica, G. penitum, Dicosmoecus gilvipes, Neophylax rickeri, and N. splendens) were quantified by underwater measurement of microhabitat availability and utilization in three northern California streams. The microhabitat parameters water depth and velocity and rock size, roughness, and slope were measured. Comparisons of habitat available to habitat used revealed significant selection for at least two microhabitat parameters by each population, with depth and velocity being the most important. Comparisons of habitat used by different species showed significant partitioning of at least two microhabitat parameters at each site, with depth being partitioned at all sites. Non-parametric discriminant analysis revealed significant microhabitat partitioning on a multivariate level at two sites. Comparisons of habitat used at different sites quantified a major niche shift by D. gilvipes in its preference for riffles versus pools. Size-selective predation by dippers (Cinclus mexicanus) and steelhead (Salmo gairdneri gairdneri) is proposed as a hypothesis to explain the observed resource partitioning and niche shift.

Synopsis The hypothesis that Sacramento suckers, Catostomus occidentalis, compete with rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, for space in streams was examined by measuring microhabitat utilization of both species in three California streams. Two streams were similar in most respects except one contained only trout and one contained trout and a large population of suckers. The third stream, formed by the union of the first two, contained trout and a small population of suckers. The species overlapped in five of the six microhabitat variables measured: maximum depth, mean water column velocity, focal point velocity, surface water velocity, and substrate type. However, the species had strong vertical segregation; there was little overlap between species in focal point depth. Mean focal point velocities were also significantly different. Suckers roamed over and generally remained in contact with the bottom while trout held position in the water column. Microhabitat utilization by trout in the stream without suckers was similar to in the stream with a higher sucker density. Differences in microhabitat utilization by trout between the third stream and the other two was attributed to the larger size of the third stream. Both sucker and trout showed a similar within-species segregation of size classes - fish under 50 mm in length sought shallow water. Size-specific trends indicated ontogenic shifts in resource utilization which reduced overlap within species. These results suggest that competition for space between trout and suckers was not a major factor regulating microhabitat utilization of trout, although the possibility that larger suckers may displace small trout needs further study.
