Invasion by exotic plants is often associated with nutrient enrichment of soils, particularly on soils of naturally low fertility. As a consequence, it is likely that the outcome of competitive interactions between native and invasive plants may be mediated by soil nutrient availability. We independently investigated competitive effect and response as well as the occurrence of asymmetric competition among native and invasive plants on soils of varying nutrient availability, using a glasshouse experiment. Seedlings of eight co‐occurring pairs of invasive and native species from low fertility Hawkesbury Sandstone‐derived soil were grown under low and high nutrient availability. We tested the hypotheses that native species would be competitively superior at low nutrient availability and have trait values associated with a resource conservation strategy while invasive species would be competitively superior at high nutrient availability and have trait values associated with a resource acquisition strategy. We found that nutrient availability did not mediate competitive interactions between invasive and native species. Instead, two invasive and one native species were always competitively superior irrespective of nutrient availability. Competitively superior species displayed a mixture of both resource conservation and acquisition strategies at low and high nutrient availability. In support of previous studies, we found that the a priori classification of invasive and native species does not predict competitive superiority at varying nutrient levels. Rather, species specific differences in trait values provide a competitive advantage in response to nutrient availability.  相似文献

Genetic control of root exudation   总被引:12,自引:2,他引:10

The literature on genetics of root exudation and on genotypic differences in qualitative and quantitative composition of root exudates in crop and native plant species was critically assessed. Differences in exudation have been reported for genotypes that differ in tolerance to nutrient deficiencies, ion toxicities, and pathogen attack. The exudation profile of a limited number of genotypes (frequently only two genotypes with the contrasting response to the environmental stress) have been reported to date. Little is known about the variability in larger samples of the germplasm or about actual genetics behind differential qualitative and quantitative composition of root exudates. Changing the exudation profile of a given genotype may be achieved by manipulating the biosynthetic capacity and by increasing the capacity of the plasma membrane to transport the specific compound out into the rhizosphere. Overexpression of the bacterial citrate synthase gene in the cytoplasm of tobacco plants resulted in exudation of large quantities of citrate into the rhizosphere and partial alleviation of the aluminium (Al) toxicity stress. A similar strategy of transforming plants with citrate synthase gene is being tried as a way of improving plant capacity to extract phosphorus (P) from soils with notoriously low P availability.More research into the genetic basis of qualitative and quantitative differences in root exudation is warranted. Understanding the genetic control of root exudation, followed by manipulation of qualitative and quantitative composition of root exudates, will result in better adaptation of plants to environmental conditions and a greater yield of crops.  相似文献

Aluminum (Al) toxicity and phosphorus (P) deficiency often coexist in acid soils that severely limit crop growth and production, including soybean (Glycine max). Understanding the physiological mechanisms relating to plant Al and P interactions should help facilitate the development of more Al-tolerant and/or P-efficient crops. In this study, both homogeneous and heterogeneous nutrient solution experiments were conducted to study the effects of Al and P interactions on soybean root growth and root organic acid exudation. In the homogenous solution experiments with a uniform Al and P distribution in the bulk solution, P addition significantly increased Al tolerance in four soybean genotypes differing in P efficiency. The two P-efficient genotypes appeared to be more Al tolerant than the two P-inefficient genotypes under these high-P conditions. Analysis of root exudates indicated Al toxicity induced citrate exudation, P deficiency triggered oxalate exudation, and malate release was induced by both treatments. To more closely mimic low-P acid soils where P deficiency and Al toxicity are often much greater in the lower soil horizons, a divided root chamber/nutrient solution approach was employed to impose elevated P conditions in the simulated upper soil horizon, and Al toxicity/P deficiency in the lower horizon. Under these conditions, we found that the two P-efficient genotypes were more Al tolerant during the early stages of the experiment than the P-inefficient lines. Although the same three organic acids were exuded by roots in the divided chamber experiments, their exudation patterns were different from those in the homogeneous solution system. The two P-efficient genotypes secreted more malate from the taproot tip, suggesting that improved P nutrition may enhance exudation of organic acids in the root regions dealing with the greatest Al toxicity, thus enhancing Al tolerance. These findings demonstrate that P efficiency may play a role in Al tolerance in soybean. Phosphorus-efficient genotypes may be able to enhance Al tolerance not only through direct Al-P interactions but also through indirect interactions associated with stimulated exudation of different Al-chelating organic acids in specific roots and root regions.  相似文献

The availability of phosphorus (P) can limit net primary production (NPP) in tropical rainforests growing on highly weathered soils. Although it is well known that plant roots release organic acids to acquire P from P-deficient soils, the importance of organic acid exudation in P-limited tropical rainforests has rarely been verified. Study sites were located in two tropical montane rainforests (a P-deficient older soil and a P-rich younger soil) and a tropical lowland rainforest on Mt. Kinabalu, Borneo to analyze environmental control of organic acid exudation with respect to soil P availability, tree genus, and NPP. We quantified root exudation of oxalic, citric, and malic acids using in situ methods in which live fine roots were placed in syringes containing nutrient solution. Exudation rates of organic acids were greatest in the P-deficient soil in the tropical montane rainforest. The carbon (C) fluxes of organic acid exudation in the P-deficient soil (0.7?mol?C?m?2?month?1) represented 16.6% of the aboveground NPP, which was greater than those in the P-rich soil (3.1%) and in the lowland rainforest (4.7%), which exhibited higher NPP. The exudation rates of organic acids increased with increasing root surface area and tip number. A shift in vegetation composition toward dominance by tree species exhibiting a larger root surface area might contribute to the higher organic acid exudation observed in P-deficient soil. Our results quantitatively showed that tree roots can release greater quantities of organic acids in response to P deficiency in tropical rainforests.

The nature and quantity of low-molecular organic acids (LOAs) exuded by the roots of nine species of calcifuge and nine species of acidifuge wild plants from northern Europe were determined by ion chromatography. Particular attention was paid to differences between the calcifuge and the acidifuge species in the proportions of different LOAs in their root exudates. Great differences in mol% root exudation between the calcifuge and the acidifuge species were found in some acids. The calcifuge species exuded more acetic acid, the acidifuge species more oxalic acid and much more citric acid. In three calcifuge species, however, root exudation of oxalic acid was appreciable, whereas acetic acid exudation was low in these species. The phosphate- and Fe-solubilizing ability of eight LOAs in a rhizosphere limestone soil was also tested. Oxalic acid was the most efficient phosphate solubilizer and citric acid, by far, the most efficient Fe-solubilizer at the concentration (10 mM) tested. It might be hypothesized that acidifuge species use oxalate to solubilize phosphate and citrate to solubilize Fe, in limestone soil. The inability of calcifuge species to grow in limestone soil might, therefore, be due to low root exudation of these acids and, as a result, inability to solubilize phosphate and Fe in limestone soil.  相似文献

Under certain stress conditions roots exude organic molecules, which may facilitate the uptake of nutrients. The objective of this research was to identify and measure the effect of low P upon the exudation of organic acids by roots of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings. Surface-sterilized alfalfa seeds were grown aseptically in sterile sand using an apparatus specially designed for the addition of ±P nutrient solutions and for the collection of root exudates. Citric, malic, and succinic acids were detected in the root exudates of 24-day-old alfalfa seedlings. Citrate exudation from the roots of P-stressed alfalfa was 182% that of plants receiving a complete nutrient solution. The increased release of citrate may provide a mechanism by which P-stressed plants enhance the availability of P in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between shoot nitrate concentration, mediated by nitrate supply to roots, and root exudation from Hordeum vulgare. Plants were grown for 14 d in C-free sand microcosms, supplied with nutrient solution containing 2 mM nitrate. After this period, three treatments were applied for a further 14 d: (A) continued supply with 2 mM nitrate (zero boost), (B) supply with 10 mM nitrate (low boost), and (C) supply with 20 mM nitrate (high boost). At the end of the treatment period, a bacterial biosensor (Pseudomonas fluorescens 10586 pUCD607, marked with the lux CDABE genes for bioluminescence) was applied to the microcosms to report on C-substrate availability, as a consequence of root exudation. The nitrate boost treatments significantly affected shoot nitrate concentrations, in the order C>B>A. In treatments receiving a nitrate boost (B, C), increased shoot nitrate concentration was correlated with increased plant biomass, reduced root length, reduced number of root tips, and increased mean root diameter, relative to the no boost treatment (A). Imaging of biosensor bioluminescence (proportional to metabolic activity in response to availability of root exudates) indicated that root exudation increased with decreasing shoot nitrate concentration. Biosensor reporting of root C-flow indicated that exudation was greater from root tip regions than from the whole root, but that specific exudation rates for all sites were unaffected by treatments. Total root exudation across treatments was found to be closely correlated with total root length, indicating that increased root exudation, per unit root biomass, with decreasing nitrate supply was associated with altered root morphology, as a consequence of systemic plant responses to internal N-status.  相似文献

Abstract: Plant root exudates play important roles in the rhizosphere. We tested three media (nutrient solution, deionized water and CaSO4 solution) for three periods of time (2, 4 and 6 h) for collecting root exudates of soil‐grown rice plants. Nutrient culture solution created complications in the analyses of exudates for total organic C (TOC) by the wet digestion method and of organic acids by HPLC due to the interference by its components. Deionized water excluded such interference in analytical analyses but affected the turgor of root cells; roots of four widely different rice cultivars excreted 20 to 60 % more TOC in deionized water than in 0.01 M CaSO4. Furthermore, the proportion of carbohydrates in TOC was also enhanced. Calcium sulfate solution maintained the osmotic environment for root cells and did not interfere in analytical procedures. Collection for 2 h avoided under‐estimation of TOC and its components exuded by rice roots, which occurred during prolonged exposure. By placing plants in 0.01 M CaSO4 for 2 h, root exudates of soil‐grown traditional, tall rice cultivars (Dular, B40 and Intan), high‐yielding dwarf cultivars (IR72, IR52, IR64 and PSBRc 20), new plant type cultivars (IR65598 and IR65600) and a hybrid (Magat) were collected at seedling, panicle initiation, flowering and maturity and characterized for TOC and organic acids. The exudation rates were, in general, lowest at seedling stage, increased until flowering but decreased at maturity. Among organic acids, malic acid showed the highest concentration followed by tartaric, succinic, citric and lactic acids. With advancing plant growth, exudation of organic acids substituted exudation of sugars. Root and shoot biomass were positively correlated with carbon exudation suggesting that it is driven by plant biomass. As root exudates provide substrates for methanogenesis in rice fields, large variations in root exudation by cultivars and at different growth stages could greatly influence CH4 emissions. Therefore, the use of high‐yielding cultivars with lowest root excretions, for example IR65598 and IR65600, would mediate low exudate‐induced CH4 production. The screening of exciting rice cultivars and breeding of new cultivars with low exudation rates could offer an important option for mitigation of CH4 emission from rice agriculture to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Growth-survival trade-offs play an important role in niche differentiation of tropical tree species in relation to light-gradient partitioning. However, the mechanisms that determine differential species performance in response to light and soil resource availability are poorly understood. To examine responses to light and soil nutrient availability, we grew seedlings of five tropical tree species for 12 mo at < 2 and 18 percent full sunlight and in two soil types representing natural contrasts in nutrient availability within a lowland dipterocarp forest in North Borneo. We chose two specialists of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor soils, respectively, and one habitat generalist. Across all species, growth was higher in high than low light and on more nutrient rich soil. Although species differed in growth rates, the ranking of species, in terms of growth, was consistent across the four treatments. Nutrient-rich soils improved seedling survival and increased growth of three species even under low light. Slower-growing species increased root allocation and reduced specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) in response to decreased nutrient supply. All species increased LAR in response to low light. Maximum growth rates were negatively correlated with survival in the most resource-limited environment. Nutrient-poor soil specialists had low maximum growth rates but high survival at low resource availability. Specialists of nutrient-rich soils, plus the habitat generalist, had the opposite suite of traits. Fitness component trade-offs may be driven by both light and belowground resource availability. These trade-offs contribute to differentiation of tropical tree species among habitats defined by edaphic variation.  相似文献

We investigated some mechanisms, which allow maize genotypes to adapt to soils which are low in available P. Dry matter production, root/shoot-ratio, root length and root exudation of organic acids and acid phosphatase were investigated in four maize genotypes grown under P-deficient and P-sufficient conditions in sterile hydroponic culture. A low-P tolerant, an acid-tolerant and a low-P susceptible genotype of maize were compared with a Swiss commercial cultivar. The study found increased root development and increased exudation of acid phosphatase under P-deficient conditions in all maize genotypes, except for the Swiss cultivar. Effects on root formation and acid phosphatase were greater for the low-P tolerant than for the low-P susceptible, and the acid soil tolerant genotypes. Organic acid contents in root tissues were increased under P deficiency and related to increased PEPC activity. However, the increase in contents was associated with an increase in exudation for the low-P tolerant genotype only. The low-P susceptible genotype was characterized by high organic acid content in roots and low organic acid exudation. The organic acids content in the phloem exudates of shoots was related to root exudation under different P supply, to the difference between lines in organic acids root content, but not to the low-P tolerance or susceptibility of maize genotypes.  相似文献

Plant roots constantly secrete compounds into the soil to interact with neighboring organisms presumably to gain certain functional advantages at different stages of development. Accordingly, it has been hypothesized that the phytochemical composition present in the root exudates changes over the course of the lifespan of a plant. Here, root exudates of in vitro grown Arabidopsis plants were collected at different developmental stages and analyzed using GC-MS. Principle component analysis revealed that the composition of root exudates varied at each developmental stage. Cumulative secretion levels of sugars and sugar alcohols were higher in early time points and decreased through development. In contrast, the cumulative secretion levels of amino acids and phenolics increased over time. The expression in roots of genes involved in biosynthesis and transportation of compounds represented in the root exudates were consistent with patterns of root exudation. Correlation analyses were performed of the in vitro root exudation patterns with the functional capacity of the rhizosphere microbiome to metabolize these compounds at different developmental stages of Arabidopsis grown in natural soils. Pyrosequencing of rhizosphere mRNA revealed strong correlations (p<0.05) between microbial functional genes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and secondary metabolites with the corresponding compounds released by the roots at particular stages of plant development. In summary, our results suggest that the root exudation process of phytochemicals follows a developmental pattern that is genetically programmed.  相似文献

The present study investigated the amounts of root exudates and composition of organic acids released from two wetland plants (Typha latifolia and Vetiver zizanioides) under two nutrient treatments: low level (0.786 mM N and 0.032 mM P) and high level (7.86 mM N and 0.32 mM P) and two types of plant cultivation: monoculture and co-culture of the two plants. Low nutrient treatment significantly (p < 0.05) increased the root exudates of T. latifolia during the initial growth period (1-21 d) and those of V. zizanioides and the co-culture during the whole growth period. The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in the root exudates of the co-culture in the low nutrient treatment were 3.23-7.91 times of those in the high nutrient treatment during the medium growth period (7-28 d). The compositions of organic acids varied between the two plant species and between the two nutrient treatments. The pattern of organic acids was also different between the co-culture and the monoculture. Oxalic acid was by far the major organic acid exuded from the two wetland plants. The present study on root exudates suggests that co-culture of wetland plant species would be more useful in the reclamation of waste water than a monoculture system.  相似文献

The invasion of non-native plants can alter the diversity and activity of soil microorganisms and nutrient cycling within forests. We used field studies to analyze the impact of a successful invasive groundcover, Alliaria petiolata, on fungal diversity, soil nutrient availability, and pH in five northeastern US forests. We also used laboratory and greenhouse experiments to test three mechanisms by which A. petiolata may alter soil processes: (1) the release of volatile, cyanogenic glucosides from plant tissue; (2) the exudation of plant secondary compounds from roots; and (3) the decomposition of litter. Fungal community composition was significantly different between invaded and uninvaded soils at one site. Compared to uninvaded plots, plots invaded by A. petiolata were consistently and significantly higher in N, P, Ca and Mg availability, and soil pH. In the laboratory, the release of volatile compounds from the leaves of A. petiolata did not significantly alter soil N availability. Similarly, in the greenhouse, the colonization of native soils by A. petiolata roots did not alter soil nutrient cycling, implying that the exudation of secondary compounds has little effect on soil processes. In a leaf litter decomposition experiment, however, green rosette leaves of A. petiolata significantly increased the rate of decomposition of native tree species. The accelerated decomposition of leaf litter from native trees in the presence of A. petiolata rosette leaves shows that the death of these high-nutrient-content leaves stimulates decomposition to a greater extent than any negative effect that secondary compounds may have on the activity of the microbes decomposing the native litter. The results presented here, integrated with recent related studies, suggest that this invasive plant may change soil nutrient availability in such a way as to create a positive feedback between site occupancy and continued proliferation.  相似文献

Plant roots serve a multitude of functions in the plant including anchorage, provision of nutrients and water, and production of exudates with growth regulatory properties. The root–soil interface, or rhizosphere, is the site of greatest activity within the soil matrix. Within this matrix, roots affect soil structure, aeration and biological activity as they are the major source of organic inputs into the rhizosphere, and are also responsible for depletion of large supplies of inorganic compounds. Roots are very complicated morphologically and physiologically, and their metabolites are often released in large quantities into the soil rhizosphere from living root hairs or fibrous root systems. Root exudates containing root-specific metabolites have critical ecological impacts on soil macro and microbiota as well as on the whole plant itself. Through the exudation of a wide variety of compounds, roots impact the soil microbial community in their immediate vicinity, influence resistance to pests, support beneficial symbioses, alter the chemical and physical properties of the soil, and inhibit the growth of competing plant species. In this review, we outline recent research on root exudation and the role of allelochemicals in the rhizosphere by studying the case of three plants that have been shown to produce allelopathic root exudates: black walnut, wheat and sorghum  相似文献

Aims In the Core Cape Subregion (CCR), a Mediterranean-climate ecosystem with infertile soils, the legume species Podalyria calyptrata and P. burchellii are in a separate clade to P. leipoldtii and P. myrtillifolia. The closely related species are allopatric, and with the west-east climate gradient and variation in soil nutrient availability in the CCR, it was hypothesized that the two closely related allopatric species would differ in their ecological niche and root:shoot ratio, specific root length (SRL) and organic acid exudation responses to phosphorus (P) supply. Methods With increasing P supply in the glasshouse, we measured plant biomass, leaf nitrogen ([N]), [P], root morphology and release of organic acids. We determined species soil and leaf [N] and [P] and climate in field sites.Important findings At low P supply, P. calyptrata roots exuded more organic acids than P. burchellii which instead produced roots with a greater SRL, and P. myrtillifolia allocated more biomass to roots than P. leipoldtii. In the field, leaf [P] and climate suggested that P. leipoldtii occupied the most oligotrophic niche followed by P. burchellii and then P. calyptrata and P. myrtillifolia. Closely related allopatric species differed in their mechanisms for P-acquisition and ecological niche, indicating that the environment overrides phylogeny in determining P-acquisition traits for these species, and suggesting that climate regulates nutrient availability, driving distribution and speciation.  相似文献

Higher plant diversity is often associated with higher soil microbial biomass and diversity, which is assumed to be partly due to elevated root exudate diversity. However, there is little experimental evidence that diversity of root exudates shapes soil microbial communities. We tested whether higher root exudate diversity enhances soil microbial biomass and diversity in a plant diversity gradient, thereby negating significant plant diversity effects on soil microbial properties. We set up plant monocultures and two‐ and three‐species mixtures in microcosms using functionally dissimilar plants and soil of a grassland biodiversity experiment in Germany. Artificial exudate cocktails were added by combining the most common sugars, organic acids, and amino acids found in root exudates. We applied four different exudate cocktails: two exudate diversity levels (low‐ and high‐diversity) and two nutrient‐enriched levels (carbon‐ and nitrogen‐enriched), and a control with water only. Soil microorganisms were more carbon‐ than nitrogen‐limited. Cultivation‐independent fingerprinting analysis revealed significantly different soil microbial communities among exudate diversity treatments. Most notably and according to our hypothesis, adding diverse exudate cocktails negated the significant plant diversity effect on soil microbial properties. Our findings provide the first experimental evidence that root exudate diversity is a crucial link between plant diversity and soil microorganisms.  相似文献

Successful reclamation of acid mine sites may be enhanced by revegetating with species that are tolerant to acid mine spoil conditions. This study was conducted to assess the response of four native shrub species, Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt., Symphoricarpos albus (L.) Blake, Berberis repens Lindl., and Ceanothus sanguineus Pursh, to 1) pyritic acid mine spoil amended with various levels of lime and composted sewage sludge with added ammonium nitrate (CSS+N) and 2) acidified granitic spoil, with and without CSS+N. Species responded to soil acidity and nutrient supply similarly in both spoil materials. Berberis and Amelanchier exhibited acid soil tolerance, Symphoricarpos grew poorly in acidic soils but had low mortality, and Ceanothus responded to low pH with very poor growth, high mortality, or both. Amelanchier was conservative in growth and did not respond to either soil pH or nutrient supply with significant differences in biomass accumulation. Symphoricarpos varied in response to CSS+N but was most productive at neutral or higher pH. Berberis responded to nutrient availability with substantial increases in biomass production, including significant growth in strongly acidic spoil. Ceanothus responded to nutrient availability with large increases in biomass and was most productive with added CSS+N at neutral or higher pH. Nitrogen fixing nodules developed on the roots of Ceanothus plants grown in granitic spoil without CSS+N. The results indicated that these species differ significantly in acid soil tolerance and in their potential for growth, stress tolerance, and resource acquisition.  相似文献
