An SIS epidemic model with variable population size and a delay   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The SIS epidemiological model has births, natural deaths, disease-related deaths and a delay corresponding to the infectious period. The thresholds for persistence, equilibria and stability are determined. The persistence of the disease combined with the disease-related deaths can cause the population size to decrease to zero, to remain finite, or to grow exponentially with a smaller growth rate constant. For some parameter values, the endemic infective-fraction equilibrium is asymptotically stable, but for other parameter values, it is unstable and a surrounding periodic solution appears by Hopf bifurcation.Research Supported in part by NSERC grant A-8965 and the University of Victoria Committee on Faculty Research & Travel  相似文献

An epidemiological model with both a time delay in the removed class and a nonlinear incidence rate is analysed to determine the equilibria and their stability. This model is for diseases where individuals are first susceptible, then infected, then removed with temporary immunity and then susceptible again when they lose their immunity. There are multiple equilibria for some parameter values, and, for certain of these, periodic solutions arise by Hopf bifurcation from the large nontrivial equilibrium state.Research supported in parts by Centers for Disease Control Contract 200-87-0515Research supported in part by NSERC A-8965  相似文献

An susceptible-infective-removed epidemic model incorporating media coverage with time delay is proposed. The stability of the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium is studied. And then, the conditions which guarantee the existence of local Hopf bifurcation are given. Furthermore, we show that the local Hopf bifurcation implies the global Hopf bifurcation after the second critical value of delay. The obtained results show that the time delay in media coverage can not affect the stability of the disease-free equilibrium when the basic reproduction number is less than unity. However, the time delay affects the stability of the endemic equilibrium and produces limit cycle oscillations while the basic reproduction number is greater than unity. Finally, some examples for numerical simulations are included to support the theoretical prediction.  相似文献

Two complementary analyses of a cyclic negative feedback system with delay are considered in this paper. The first analysis applies the work by Sontag, Angeli, Enciso and others regarding monotone control systems under negative feedback, and it implies the global attractiveness towards an equilibrium for arbitrary delays. The second one concerns the existence of a Hopf bifurcation with respect to the delay parameter, and it implies the existence of nonconstant periodic solutions for special delay values. A key idea is the use of the Schwarzian derivative, and its application for the study of Hill function nonlinearities. The positive feedback case is also addressed.  相似文献

A system of 13 ordinary differential equations with 42 parameters is presented to model hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle. For an excellent fit to clinical data, the model requires a 36 h time delay for the effect of inhibin on the synthesis of follicle stimulating hormone. Biological and mathematical reasons for this delay are discussed. Bifurcations with respect to changes in three important parameters are examined. One parameter represents the level of estradiol adequate for significant synthesis of luteinizing hormone. Bifurcation diagrams with respect to this parameter reveal an interval of parameter values for which a unique stable periodic solution exists and this solution represents a menstrual cycle during which ovulation occurs. The second parameter measures mass transfer between the first two stages of ovarian development and is indicative of healthy follicular growth. The third parameter is the time delay. Changes in the second parameter and the time delay affect the size of the uniqueness interval defined with respect to the first parameter. Saddle-node, transcritical and degenerate Hopf bifurcations are studied.  相似文献

In this paper, a nutrient–phytoplankton model described by a couple of reaction-diffusion equations with delay is studied analytically and numerically. The aim of this research is to provide an understanding of the impact of delay on the nutrient–phytoplankton dynamics. Significantly, the delay can not only induce instability of a positive equilibrium, but also promote the formation of patchiness (an irregular pattern) via Hopf bifurcation. However, if the delay does not exist, the positive equilibrium is always globally asymptotically stable when it exists. In addition, the numerical analysis indicates that the input rate and the loss rate of nutrient also play an important role in the growth of phytoplankton, which supports that eutrophic conditions may be a significant reason inducing phytoplankton blooms. Numerical results are consistent with the analytical results.  相似文献

A technique is discussed for locating the Hopf bifurcation of an n-dimensional system of delay differential equations which arises from a model for control of protein biosynthesis. Certain parameter values are shown to allow a Hopf bifurcation to periodic orbits. A model of time-delay recurrently coupled spatially segregated neural assemblies is here proposed. We show that it operates like some of the hierarchical architectures of the brain. Each assembly is a neural network with no delay in the local couplings between the units. The delay appears in the long range feedforward and feedback inter-assemblies communications. Bifurcation analysis of a simple four-units system in the autonomous case shows the richness of the dynamical behaviors in a biophysically plausible parameter region. We find oscillatory multistability, hysteresis, and stability switches of the rest state provoked by the time delay. Then we investigate the spatio-temporal patterns of bifurcating periodic solutions by using the symmetric local Hopf bifurcation theory of delay differential equations and derive the equation describing the flow on the center manifold that enables us determining the direction of Hopf bifurcations and stability of the bifurcating periodic orbits. We also discuss computational properties of the system due to the delay when an external drive of the network mimicks external sensory input.  相似文献

Epidemiological models with nonlinear incidence rates I pSqshow a much wider range of dynamical behaviors than do those with bilinear incidence rates IS. These behaviors are determined mainly by p and , and secondarily by q. For such models, there may exist multiple attractive basins in phase space; thus whether or not the disease will eventually die out may depend not only upon the parameters, but also upon the initial conditions. In some cases, periodic solutions may appear by Hopf bifurcation at critical parameter values.  相似文献

In this paper we explore how the time delay induced Hopf-bifurcation interacts with Turing instability to determine the resulting spatial patterns. For this study, we consider a delayed prey–predator model with Holling type-II functional response and intra-specific competition among the predators. Analytical criteria for the delay induced Hopf-bifurcation and for the delayed spatio-temporal model are provided with numerical example to validate the analytical results. Exhaustive numerical simulation reveals the appearance of three types of stationary patterns, cold spot, labyrinthine, mixture of stripe-spot and two non-stationary patterns, quasi-periodic and spatio-temporal chaotic patterns. The qualitative features of the patterns for the non-delayed and the delayed spatio-temporal model are the same but their occurrence is solely controlled by the temporal parameters, rate of diffusivity and magnitude of the time delay. It is evident that the magnitude of time delay parameter beyond the Hopf-bifurcation threshold mostly produces spatio-temporal chaotic patterns.  相似文献

We model an age-structured population feeding on an abiotic resource by combining the Gurtin-MacCamy [Math. Biosci. 43 (1979) 199] approach with a standard chemostat model. Limit cycles arise by Hopf bifurcations at low values of the chemostat dilution rate, even for simple maternity functions for which the original Gurtin-MacCamy model has no oscillatory solutions. We find the exact location in parameter space of the Hopf bifurcations for special cases of our model. The onset of cycling is largely independent of both the form of the resource uptake function and the shape of the maternity function.  相似文献

Previous experimental work has shown that the firing rate of multiple time-scales of adaptation for single rat neocortical pyramidal neurons is consistent with fractional-order differentiation, and the fractional-order neuronal models depict the firing rate of neurons more verifiably than other models do. For this reason, the dynamic characteristics of the fractional-order Hindmarsh–Rose (HR) neuronal model were here investigated. The results showed several obvious differences in dynamic characteristic between the fractional-order HR neuronal model and an integer-ordered model. First, the fractional-order HR neuronal model displayed different firing modes (chaotic firing and periodic firing) as the fractional order changed when other parameters remained the same as in the integer-order model. However, only one firing mode is displayed in integer-order models with the same parameters. The fractional order is the key to determining the firing mode. Second, the Hopf bifurcation point of this fractional-order model, from the resting state to periodic firing, was found to be larger than that of the integer-order model. Third, for the state of periodically firing of fractional-order and integer-order HR neuron model, the firing frequency of the fractional-order neuronal model was greater than that of the integer-order model, and when the fractional order of the model decreased, the firing frequency increased.  相似文献
