Filtration and ingestion rates of Salpa fusiformis Cuvier were determined while fed Phaeodactylumtricomutum Bohlin at concentrations of 2?64 × 103 cells·ml?1. Filtration and ingestion rates increase exponentially with increasing length and body protein. The relations between protein content and body length, and between filtration rate and weight are similar for blastozooids and oozooids. A capture efficiency of the order of 6–32% is calculated: Salpa fusiformis seems to have a low retention efficiency, but its very high filtration rate gives it pride of place amongst filter-feeders. Specific filtration rates are independent of weight; specific ingestion rates are independent of weight for blastozooids, but for oozooids they seem to diminish with increasing weight. The mean daily ration (μg C ingested · μg body C?1) is 107% for a blastozooid and 117% for an oozooid. Specific filtration rates decrease exponentially as particle concentration rises, as for many other filter-feeders, and the specific ingestion rate follows an Ivlev relation.  相似文献

Phosphorus (PO4-P) and nitrogen (NH4-N) excretion rates of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a rotifer, isolated from Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands) and cultured in the lake water at 18–19 °C, were measured in the laboratory. In a series of experiments, the effects of experiment duration on the P and N excretion rates were examined. The rates measured in the first half-hour were about 2 times higher for P and 2–4 times for N than the rates in the subsequent three successive hours which were quite comparable.Eight experiments were carried out in triplicate, 4 each for P and N excretion measurements, using animals of two size ranges: 60–125 µm and > 125 µm. The specific excretion rates varied from 0.06 to 0.18 µg P.mg–1 DW.h–1 and 0.21 to 0.76 µg N.mg–1 DW.h–1. Generally an inverse relationship was observed between the specific excretion rates and the mean individual weight. The excretion rates of Euchlanis measured by us are lower than those reported for several other rotifer species, most of which are much smaller than Euchlanis.Extrapolating the excretion rates of Euchlanis to the other rotifer species in Lake Loosdrecht, and accounting for their density, size and temperature, rotifer excretion appears to be a significant, potential nutrient (N,P) source for phytoplankton growth in the lake. The excretion rates for the rotifers appear to be about two thirds of the total zooplankton excretion, even though the computed rotifer mean biomass is about one-third of the total zooplankton biomass.  相似文献

Nitrogenous excretion in two snails, Littorina saxatilis (high intertidal) and L. obtusata (low intertidal) was studied in relation to temperature acclimation (at 4° and 21°C), including total N excretion rates, the fraction of urea in N excretion, corresponding O:N ratios and the partitioning of deaminated protein between catabolic and anabolic processes at 4°, 11° and 21°C. Aggregate N excretion rates in both species showed no significant compensatory adjustments following acclimation. Total weight specific N excretion rates at 21°C were higher in standard 3 mg L. saxatilis (739 ng N mg−1 h−1) than standard 5 mg L. obtusata (257 ng N mg−1 h−1) for snails acclimated to 21°C. Comparisons of Q10 values of total weight specific N excretion to Q10 values for weight specific oxygen consumption ({xxV}O2) between 4° to 11 °C and 11° to 21°C indicated that, while total rates of catabolic metabolism ({xxV}O2) and protein deamination in L. obtusata were essentially parallel, the relationship between N excretion and {xxV}O2 in L. saxatilis revealed the partitioning of a larger share of deaminated protein carbon into anabolism at 4° and 21°C than at 11°C. Urea N accounted for a larger share of aggregate N excreted in L. saxatilis than in L. obtusata, but in both species urea N is a greater proportion of total N excreted when acclimated at 4°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 1 to 2.15) than in snails acclimated to 21°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 0.46 to 1.39). Molar O:N ratios indicate that the proportion of metabolism supported by protein catabolism is greater in L. saxatilis (O:N range: 2.5–8.4) than in L. obtusata (O:N range: 7.3–13.0). In both species, regardless of acclimation temperature, the O:N ratios are generally lowest (high protein catabolism) at 4°C and highest at 21°C.  相似文献

Summary The influence of feeding on the metabolic activity of juvenile krill was assessed from 24h experiments in which krill were incubated with various concentrations of diatoms (Chaetoceros calcitrans, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira eccentrica, Fragilariopsis vanheurkii), newly hatched Artemia nauplii and latex beads. Krill fed on the larger food more efficiently, with reluctant feeding on latex beads. Feeding of krill expressed as clearance rates was poorly correlated with their oxygen uptake rates. Instead, a positive correlation was found between the oxygen uptake rates and ingestion rate (except for latex beads). The result implies that the specific dynamic action is the major cause of the increased oxygen uptake of krill. Krill fed diatoms increased both ammonia and phosphate excretion with increasing ingestion rate, but only phosphate excretion was increased in parallel with ingestion rate for those fed Artemia nauplii. Assuming the daily ration of krill in the field is 5% of the body weight, and the major food source is phytoplankton, oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion rates of wild krill are estimated to be 1.6, 4.5 and 7.8, respectively, times the rates of non-feeding krill in 24h laboratory experiments. Krill offered various kinds of food showed different metabolic quotients (O/N, N/P and O/P ratios). While no functional relationship was seen between the metabolic quotient and the ingestion rate of krill fed Artemia nauplii, those fed Fragilariopsis showed a progressive decrease in O/N, N/P, and O/P ratios as their ingestion rates increased.  相似文献

The combined effects of temperature, sex and length of pre-experimental starvation period on respiration, ammonia and inorganic phosphate excretion of the mysid shrimp Neomysis integer were studied in laboratory experiments. Of these variables, temperature had the strongest effect. A rise in experimental temperature from 6 to 16 °C increased the metabolic rates by a factor of 2 to 3.Weight-specific respiration rates of females were slightly lower than those of males. However, these differences could be attributed to differences in size. Sex did not significantly affect ammonia and inorganic phosphate excretion.A prolongation of the pre-experimental starvation period from 6 to 30 h reduced ammonia excretion of Neomys integer, but had no impact on oxygen consumption rates. Accordingly, the atomic O : N ratio increased in starved specimens. There were no discernables effects of the variables studied on atomic O : P and N : P ratios.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion of the zebra musselDreissena polymorpha from 3 sites in lakes were estimated regularly over the course of 1 1/2 years at ambient temperature. They showed a pronounced annual cycle, when expressed in absolute terms (at standard shell length) and in weight specific terms (at standard tissue weight). The atomic ratio of oxygen consumed to ammonia-N released (O/N ratio) was lowest in late summer at all sites (10 to 20) and highest during winter and spring (50 to > 100). The mean body weight exponent pooled from these sites was 0.78 (95% confidence interval±0.07) for the oxygen consumption rate and 0.80 (confidence interval±0.10) for the ammonia excretion rate. Both oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were significantly correlated with the water temperature at the 2 shallow water sites, where temperature variation was most pronounced. Correlation with seston content or gonad volume were insignificant at these sites. The quotient of filtration capacity to oxygen consumption rate was about 3 times higher at the site with the poorest food conditions compared to the other sites. Net growth efficiency was highly variable; its annual average was 35 to 40 per cent and independent of locality and animal size.  相似文献

Spirulina platensis (= Arthrospira fusiformis) was isolated from Lake Chitu, a saline, alkaline lake in Ethiopia, where it forms an almost unialgal population. Optimum growth conditions were studied in a turbidostat. Cultures grown in modified Zarrouk's medium and exposed to a range of light intensities (20–500 µmol photons m–2s–1) showed a maximum specific growth rate (µmax) of 1.78 d–1. Quantum yield for growth (µ) was 3.8% at the optimum light for growth of 330 µmol photons m–2s–1, and ranged from 2.8 to 9.4%. With increase in irradiance, the chlorophyll a concentration decreased, and the carotenoids/chlorophyll a ratio increased by a factor of 2.4. The phosphorus to carbon ratio (P/C) showed some variation, while the nitrogen to carbon ratio (N/C) remained relatively constant, thus causing fluctuations in the N:P ratio (7–11) of cells. An optimum N:P ratio of about 7 was attained in cells growing at the optimum light for growth. Results from the continuous culture experiments agreed well with maximum values of photosynthetic efficiency given in the literature for natural populations of S. platensis in the soda lakes of East Africa, Lake Arenguade (Ethiopia), and Lake Simbi (Kenya).  相似文献

The fluxes of particulate and dissolved material between bivalve beds and the water column in the Oosterschelde estuary have been measured in situ with a Benthic Ecosystem Tunnel. On mussel beds uptake of POC, PON and POP was observed. POC and PON fluxes showed a significant positive correlation, and the average C:N ratio of the fluxes was 9.4. There was a high release of phosphate, nitrate, ammonium and silicate from the mussel bed into the water column. The effluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate showed a significant correlation, with an average N:P ratio of 16.5. A comparison of the in situ measurements with individual nutrient excretion rates showed that excretion by the mussels contributed 31–85% to the total phosphate flux from the mussel bed. Ammonium excretion by the mussels accounted for 17–94% of the ammonium flux from the mussel bed. The mussels did not excrete silicate or nitrate. Mineralization of biodeposition on the mussel bed was probably the main source of the regenerated nutrients. From the in situ observations net budgets of N, P and Si for the mussel bed were calculated. A comparison between the uptake of particulate organic N and the release of dissolved inorganic N (ammonium + nitrate) showed that little N is retained by the mussel bed, and suggested that denitrification is a minor process in the mussel bed sediment. On average, only 2/3 of the particulate organic P, taken up by the mussel bed, was recycled as phosphate. A net Si uptake was observed during phytoplankton blooms, and a net release dominated during autumn. It is concluded that mussel beds increase the mineralization rate of phytoplankton and affect nutrient ratios in the water column. A comparison of N regeneration by mussels in the central part of the Oosterschelde estuary with model estimates of total N remineralization showed that mussels play a major role in the recycling of nitrogen.  相似文献

Temperature is a master variable controlling biochemical processes in organisms, and its effects are manifested on many organizational levels in organisms and ecosystems. We examined the effects of temperature on the biochemical composition and stoichiometry of a model heterotrophic bacterium, Escherichia coli K-12, held at constant growth rate in chemostats. Increasing temperature led to increased cellular organic carbon (C) and organic nitrogen (N) with decreased phosphorus (P) content, leading to increased C/P and N/P biomass ratios. P content was related to cellular RNA, which is P-rich (9–10% by weight) and nonnucleic acid P (presumably composed of mostly phospholipids, intracellular phosphate, and polyphosphate). These results indicate that E. coli allocates an increased proportion of its P cell quota toward assembly (ribosomes) at low temperatures and an increasing proportion toward resource acquisition machinery (membranes) at higher temperatures. If these results are relevant to the behavior of prokaryotic heterotrophs in natural settings (the gut, soils, lakes, oceans, etc.), it suggests greater nutrient regeneration and less microbial nutrient retention as temperatures increase.  相似文献

Ammonia-nitrogen excretion in Daphnia pulex   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
Ammonia-nitrogen excretion rates were measured in natural summer and cultured populations of Daphnia pulex from Silver Lake, Clay County, Minnesota, USA during 1973. The mean rate of ammonia-nitrogen excretion for the summer populations was 0.20 µg N animal–1 day–1 or 5.11 µg N mg–1 dry body weight day–1 (N = 80) measured at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. These rates appear to be temperature and weight dependent, but they are probably affected by factors other than temperature and dry body weight. Ammonia-nitrogen excretion rates of Daphnia pulex cultured on Chlamydomonas reinhardi yielded the following relationship with temperature: Log10E = (0.061) T 1.773, where E is µg N animal–1 day–1 and T is temperature °C. The ammonia-nitrogen excretion on a mg–1 dry body weight day–1 basis was related to temperature according to the following similar expression Log10E = (0.043) T + 0.153, where E is µg N mg–1 dry body weight day–1, and T is temperature °C. The length-weight relationship of Daphnia pulex for the summer populations (N = 1583) was log10W = (0.526) Log10L + 1.357, where W is weight in µg and L is length in mm.  相似文献

The response of rice toAzolla caroliniana, newly introduced in India, was compared with the reponse to the local isolate ofAzolla pinnata at varying rates of phosphate fertilizer (4.4–8.8 kg P ha–1) during a wet and a dry season.Fresh weight, dry weight and fixed N were more for both species 21 DAI (days after inoculation) than 14 DAI, but acetylene reduction activity (ARA) was higher 14 DAI than 21 DAI. Dry weight of Azolla and fixed N were less 14 DAI forA. caroliniana than forA. pinnata during the wet season. Twenty-one DAI, fresh weight ofA. caroliniana was 62.1 and 27.6% higher than that ofA. pinnata during the wet and dry season, respectively. However, dry weight and fixed N were more 21 DAI inA. caroliniana than inA. pinnata during only the wet season. The ARA was higher inA. caroliniana both 14 and 21 DAI, irrespective of season. The presence of either species in the rice field increased grain yield, straw yield, number of panicles m–2, number of grains per panicle and reduced percentage sterility during both the wet and the dry season. Phosphate application significantly increased fresh weight, dry weight, ARA and fixed N for both species as well as grain and straw yields of rice. The responses to phosphate fertilizer were similar for both Azolla species and for rice grown with either one of the Azolla species.  相似文献

Summary Effects of P fertilizers on growth of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var.menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) seedlings were examined in pots and nursery beds. In pot experiments levels of P equivalent to 300 kg/ha were adequate for maximum growth over 14–18 weeks and resulted in available soil P levels of 80 ppm after 15 weeks' growth. Maximum growth in pots was obtained with shoot P concentrations of 0.18%–0.20%, with higher values at lower temperatures, but the optimum concentration for one-year old (1-0) nursery seedlings was 0.16% P. Growth of seedlings was greatly restricted at a soil temperature of 5°C and an air temperature of 12°C. At a soil temperature of 10°C and an air temperature of 14°C seedling P requirement was greater than at soil and air temperatures of 20°C.Comparison showed that monammonium phosphate was more effective than calcium superphosphate in stimulating growth in pots and nursery. Triple superphosphate was also effective in the nursery. Diammonium phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and phosphoric acid had no advantages as P sources in the nursery. Available P levels of 100–130 ppm, in the loamy sand and sandy loam nurseries studied, and needle P concentrations of 0.18%, when sampled in October, were associated with maximum growth of two-year old (2-0) seedlings.P fertilization decreased root/shoot ratio, but did not alter the allometric relationship of shoot to root. Improving P status from a low level increased root growth capacity in 2-0 seedlings and P fertilization of potted seedlings increased dry weight/height ratio. Uptakes per seed bed ha of 236 kg N, 31 kg P, 81 kg K and 73 kg Ca by 2-0 seedlings were comparable with, or greater than, uptake rates of agricultural crops. Recoveries of 6–11% of P from fertilizer were recorded in the nursery.  相似文献

Data on phosphate excretion rates of zooplankton are based on measurements using the pelagic crustacean zooplankton of Lake Vechten and laboratory-cultured Daphnia galeata. In case of Daphnia sp we measured the effects of feeding on P-rich algae and P-poor algae (Scenedesmus) as food on the P-excretion rates at 20°C. The excretion rates of the natural zooplankton community, irrespective of the influence of the factors mentioned, varied by an order of magnitude: 0.025–0.275µg PO4-Pmg–1C in zooplankton (C zp ) h–1. The temperature accounted for about half the observed variation in excretion rates. The mean excretion rates in the lake, computed for 20°C, varied between 0.141 and 0.260 µg Pmg–1C zp h–1. Based on data of zooplankton biomass in the lake the P-regeneration rates by zooplankton covered between 22 and 239% of the P-demand of phytoplankton during the different months of the study period. In D. galeata, whereas the C/P ratios of the Scenedesmus used as food differed by a factor 5 in the experiments, the excretion rates differed by factor 3 only. Despite the higher P-excretion rates (0.258± 0.022 µg PO4-P mg–1 C h–1) of the daphnids fed with P-rich food than those fed with P-poor food (0.105 ± 0.047 µg PO4-P mg–1 C hp–1), both the categories of the animals were apparently conserving P. A survey of the literature on zooplankton excretion shows that in Daphnia the excretion rates vary by a factor 30, irrespective of the species and size of animals and method of estimation and temperature used.About two-thirds of this variation can be explained by size and temperature. A major problem of comparability of studies on P-regeneration by zooplankton relates to the existing techniques of P determination, which necessitates concentrating the animals several times above the in situ concentration (crowding) and prolonged experimental duration (starving), both of which manifest in marked changes that probably lead to underestimation of the real rates.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on filtration and ingestion rates ofSalpa fusiformis Cuvier was determined over the temperature range 13–22°C at a constant algal concentration. Filtration and ingestion rates increased with temperature up to an optimum (19.7 to 20.2°C) beyond which they decreased. Food assimilation for this salp species was determined while fed onPhaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin orHymenomonas elongata Stein at different algal concentrations. The percent assimilation varied between 28 and 39% (mean: 32%) with the diatomP. tricornutum as food, and between 39 to 81% (mean: 64%) with the flagellateH. elongata. Assimilation did not seem to depend on the algal concentration but it was greater with the flagellate than with the diatom, the latter having a higher ash content.  相似文献

The present study reports on effects of different light:dark periods, light intensities, N:P ratios and temperature on the specific growth rate of flagellated cells of Phaeocystis pouchetii in culture. The specific growth rate was estimated by diel changes in cellular DNA content. The cellular DNA content and cell cycle of flagellated cells of P. pouchetii are shown, and the importance of light:dark period in cell division is demonstrated. Diel patterns of the cellular DNA content showed that cell division was confined to the dark period. The cells dealt with more than one division per day by rapid divisions shortly after each other. The specific growth rates (μDNA) based on the DNA cell cycle model were in close agreement with specific growth rates (μCell) determined from cell counts. The temperature affected the specific growth rates (multiple regression, p < 0.01) and were higher at 5 °C (μ ≤ 2.2 d−1) than at 10 °C (μ ≤1.6 d−1). Increasing the light:dark period from 12:12 h to 20:4 h affected the specific growth rate of P. pouchetii at the lower temperature tested (5 °C) (multiple regression, p < 0.01), resulting in higher specific growth rates than at 10 °C. At 10 °C, the effect of light:dark period was severely reduced. Neither light nor nutrients could compensate the reduction in specific growth rates caused by elevated temperature. The specific growth rates was not affected by the N:P ratios tested (multiple regression, p = 0.21). The experiments strongly suggest that the flagellated cells have a great growth potential and could play a dominating role in northern areas at increased day length.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding on the excretory nitrogen (N) metabolism of the aquatic Chinese soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis, with a special emphasis on the role of urea synthesis in ammonia detoxification. P. sinensis is ureogenic and possesses a full complement of ornithine-urea cycle enzymes in its liver. It is primarily ureotelic in water, and the estimated rate of urea synthesis in unfed animals was equivalent to only 1.5% of the maximal capacity of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS I) in its liver. Approximately 72 h was required for P. sinensis to completely digest a meal of prawn meat. During this period, there were significant increases in ammonia contents in the stomach at hour 24 and in the intestine between hours 12 and 36, which could be a result of bacterial activities in the intestinal tract. However, ammonia contents in the liver, muscle, brain and plasma remained unchanged throughout the 72-h post-feeding. In contrast, at hour 24, urea contents in the stomach, intestine, liver, muscle, brain and plasma increased significantly by 2.9−, 3.5−, 2.6−, 2.9−, 3.4 and 3.0-fold, respectively. In addition, there was a 3.3- to 8.0−fold increase in the urea excretion rate between hours 0 and 36 post-feeding, which preceded the increase in ammonia excretion between hours 12 and 48. By hour 48, 68% of the assimilated N from the feed was excreted, 54% of which was excreted as urea-N. The rate of urea synthesis apparently increased sevenfold during the initial 24 h after feeding, which demanded only 10% of the maximal CPS I capacity in P. sinensis. The postprandial detoxification of ammonia to urea in P. sinensis effectively prevented postprandial surges in ammonia contents in the plasma and other tissues, as observed in other animals, during the 72-h period post-feeding. In addition, postprandial ammonia toxicity was ameliorated by increased transamination and synthesis of certain amino acids in the liver and muscle of P. sinensis. After feeding, a slight but significant increase in the glutamine content occurred in the brain at hour 24, indicating that the brain might experience a transient increase in ammonia and ammonia was detoxified to glutamine.  相似文献

Significant faunal changes reported from recent, coastal environments, which are not directly influenced by urban and industrial impact, are rarely seen. In Gullmar Fjord on the Swedish west coast, a significant foraminiferal fauna change occurred in connection with severe low-oxygen conditions that evolved in the winter of 1979/1980. A foraminiferal fauna marked by common Skagerrak–Kattegat species, which had previously characterised the deep fjord basin, was replaced by the opportunistic, low-oxygen tolerant species Stainforthia fusiformis (Williamsson). To study this phenomenon further we performed stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses on the indicator species itself, S. fusiformis, both on specimens from sediment cores representing approximately the last 85 years and on living (stained) individuals taken from a transect across the deep fjord basin. Our purpose was to detail how and why S. fusiformis, came to dominate the fauna. The oxygen isotope results suggest that salinities and temperatures in the deep basin have been relatively constant over the last c. 85 years, while the carbon isotopes show a significant change towards more negative values in association with the faunal shift of 1979/1980. The combined results from both the cores and the surface sediments suggest that S. fusiformis did not inhabit the deep basin until 1980. Before then, almost all specimens of S. fusiformis were small sized and their carbon isotope values suggest they were re-deposited shallow-water specimens that had been transported down to the central, deep basin as part of a suspension load. After a major faunal extinction in 1979–1980, S. fusiformis of all sizes suddenly appeared in large numbers and their carbon isotopic values were similar to the signal from registered in the recent, living fauna within the deep basin. This suggests that the opportunistic S. fusiformis established itself in the deep basin as a consequence of the severe low-oxygen event and the faunal crash of the previously dominating Skagerrak–Kattegat fauna.  相似文献

In order to study the influence of nutrients on the growth characteristics of the dominant dinoflagellates, Ceratium furca and Ceratium fusus, in the temperate coastal area of Sagami Bay, Japan, we conducted field monitoring from January 2000 to December 2005 and performed laboratory culture experiments. In the field study, population densities of C. furca and C. fusus were high, even in low nutrient concentrations (N: 1.58 μM, P: 0.17 μM). Both species were more abundant in the surface and sub-surface layers than in the bottom layers during the stratification periods. In the laboratory study, the specific growth rates of C. furca and C. fusus increased gradually along with increasing nutrients up to the T5 (N: 5 μM, P: 0.5 μM) and T10 (N: 10 μM, P: 1 μM) concentration levels, after which the growth rate plateaued at the T50 (N: 50 μM, P: 5 μM) concentration level. In contrast, the nutrient uptake rates of both species continuously increased, indicating “luxury consumption”, i.e., excessive cellular storage not related to growth rate. The half-saturation constants (Ks) of C. furca for nitrate (0.49 μM) and phosphate (0.05 μM) were slightly higher than C. fusus (0.32 and 0.03 μM, respectively). We offer two reasons why the two Ceratium population densities were maintained at high levels in low nutrient conditions. First, these two species have a competitive advantage over other algal species because of low Ks values and specific characteristics for nutrient uptake such as luxury consumption. Their ability to obtain nutrients through alternative methods, such as phagotrophy, might contribute to bloom formation and population persistence. Second, the cell densities of both Ceratium species increased along with nitrate concentrations in the media even when phosphorus was held constant. In particular, the growth of C. furca was directly supported by various nitrogen sources such as nitrate, ammonium, and urea, although the highest growth rates were observed only in the nitrate-enriched cultures. Our field and laboratory results revealed that the growth rates of the two Ceratium species increased readily in high N:P nutrient conditions (i.e., conditions of P limitation) indicating an advantage over other algal species in phosphorus-limited environments such as Sagami Bay.  相似文献

The productivity and ecological role of benthos in man-made Lake Kariba was assessed through the use of P/B-ratios and by measuring the metabolism (respiration, N and P excretion) of the most abundant mussel species (Aspatharia wahlbergi, Corbicula africana and Caelatura mossambicensis) in laboratory experiments. For A. wahlbergi also filtration rate was estimated. The annual production of benthos for the populated 0–12 m interval was estimated at 11.0 g m –2 yr–1 (shellfree dry weight) of which mussels contributed for 8.81 g (80%), snails 2.16 g (20%) and insects 0.03 g (0.3%) respectively. The most important mussel species in the lake were Caelatura mossambicensis (4.97 g m–2 yr–1) and Corbicula africana (3.33 g). The dominant snail species was Melanoides tuberculata (1.63 g). For the total lake, also including deeper unpopulated bottoms, the annual production of benthos was 2.70 g m–2 yr–1 (shell-free dry weight).Respiration and excretion varied with temperature displaying a bell-shaped relationship. Metabolic rates in Aspatharia wahlbergi increased about 5× between 16.5 °C and the maximum at 34.0 °C and then decreased again at 39.0 °C, when the mussels showed signs of severe stress. Metabolism in Corbicula africana had a lower optimum with fairly constant activity between 18.6 and 29.2 °C, rapidly decreasing above this temperature. The average respiration, nutrient excretion and water filtration rates for mussels in Lake Kariba at 25.2 °C were estimated to about 0.6 mg O2 85 µg NH4–N, 1.5 µg PO4–P and 0.51 water filtered h–1 g–1 shellfree dry weight. This gives that a volume corresponding to about the total epilimnion of the lake is filtered by the mussels annually. Further, mussels can be estimated to remineralise % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0Jf9crFfpeea0xh9v8qiW7rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaaGymaiaac+% cacaaI0aaaaa!3A2B!\[1/4\] of the total load of phosphate, and 8 times the total load of nitrogen every year. The population needs 3.5 × 104 tons of organic carbon for its maintainance, which indicates that about 5% of the annual phytoplankton production is channeled through mussels. We conclude that the mussels, rather than being an important food source for fish, seem to play a large role in the nutrient dynamics of Lake Kariba.  相似文献

ACPase activity was localized in the apoplast of pea root nodules under phosphorus deficiency. Pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv. Sze ciotygodniowy) where inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae 248 and were cultured on nitrogen-free medium with phosphate (−N/+P) or phosphate-deficient (−N/−P) one. In comparison with control nodules, P-deficient nodules showed the increase of ACPase activity in plant cell walls and the infection threads. The increase in bacterial ACPase activity under P-deficiency may reflect higher demand for inorganic phosphorus that is necessary for bacteria multiplication within the infection threads. The increase of ACPase activity in nodule apoplast under P stress may enlarge the availability of phosphate for plant and bacteria.  相似文献
