A clear shift from vegetative cells to auxospores and resting spores in Thalassiosira australis was observed in the water column and sinking fluxes under the fast ice near Syowa Station in the austral summer of 2005/2006. This is the first report of the auxosporulation by T. australis in situ. Resting spores were also observed in the sediment even before new spore formation, suggesting that T. australis can overwinter in the sediment. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates ingested and digested vegetative cells and auxospores but did not digest resting spores, suggesting a high tolerance of resting spores to grazing by heterotrophic dinoflagellates. We discuss the possible life history and overwintering strategy that T. australis uses in an Antarctic coastal area to cope with the unpredictable timing of sea ice growth and decay.  相似文献

The morphology of vegetative and reproductive structures of Martensia fragilis Harvey, Martensia australis Harvey and Martensia flabelliformis Harvey ex J. Agardh was studied based on material collected from Japan. M. fragilis and M. australis have cystocarps with terminal carposporangia, and their membranous portions are composed of cell layers with regularly stacked flat cells of similar size. M. flabelliformis has the following combination of characters: (i) carposporangia are formed in short chains; and (ii) the membranous portion is composed of irregularly arranged flat cells of various sizes. These characters are distinctly different from those of Martensia and warrant the establishment of Neomartensia gen. nov., with the type species Neomartensia flabelliformis comb. nov.  相似文献

Abstract

Two new species, Ulota yunnanensis and Ulota gigantospora, are described from Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, China. Both have multicellular spores, a relatively uncommon character in the genus. Differences between the species include growth form and habit, leaf areolation, capsule shape, peristome structure and ornamentation, operculum shape and colour, as well as vaginula and calyptra hairiness. These characters and those discriminating the new species from other ones with similar spore type are discussed and illustrated.  相似文献

Eocene to middle Miocene stratigraphic changes in species richness, abundance and valve size of Chaetoceros resting spores in the Norwegian Sea (DSDP Site 338) were investigated in order to understand past productivity and paleoenvironmental changes in upwelling regions. As a result, drastic resting spore events were recognized in a 6 myr interval across the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (EO Event), the Oligocene/Miocene boundary (OM Event) and in the early middle Miocene (emM Event). The EO Event was characterized by explosive diversification at both the morpho-generic and specific levels, an increase in abundance, and a decrease in valve size from the upper Eocene through the lowest Oligocene. The OM Event was defined by a two-fold increase in species richness. During the emM Event spore abundance decreased rapidly, and species richness and valve size decreased gradually. These changes may indicate changes in the nutrient supply, especially in upwelling regions. The increased species richness suggests a change from a stable water column with a constant nutrient supply in the Eocene to an unstable one with a sporadic nutrient supply by increased vertical mixing in the Oligocene, based on evaluation of the ecologic differences between dinoflagellate cysts and Chaetoceros resting spores. The role of main primary producer might have switched from dinoflagellates and/or nannoplankton in the Eocene to diatoms, especially Chaetoceros, in the Oligocene in the Norwegian Sea. Increased resting spore species richness during the OM Event may show that environmental changes such as global cooling and nutrient mixing led to a diversification of the spore producing genus Chaetoceros. The emM Event might have been affected by changes in paleoceanographic conditions, perhaps a decrease in nutrient supply. This study presents the first paleoceanographic analysis using not only the total resting spore abundance but also the abundances of individual species, and establishes the value of spore taxonomy and diatom analysis including spores.  相似文献

Fistulifera sp. strain JPCC DA0580, a marine pennate diatom, contains extremely high levels of intracellular triglyceride and has been suggested as a promising source of feedstock for biodiesel fuels. JPCC DA0580 was isolated from a mangrove swamp located in Sumiyo Bay below the mouths of the Sumiyo and Yakugachi Rivers in Amami‐Ohshima, Kagoshima, Japan. In this study, the morphology and the 18S rDNA sequence of JPCC DA0580 were compared with those of other Fistulifera strains. JPCC DA0580 possesses morphological characters of the genus Fistulifera, namely lightly silicified frustules, a distinct median costa (raphe sternum), and a wart‐like central pore (fistula). Morphometric analysis revealed that JPCC DA0580 differs from other Fistulifera species by the presence of a valve with coarser striation and coarser areolation. On the basis of 18S rDNA phylogeny, JPCC DA0580 formed a well‐supported clade with other members of the Fistulifera species complex, although the number of nucleotide substitutions was highest in JPCC DA0580. Our results led us to propose the taxonomic name Fistulifera solaris sp. nov. for JPCC DA0580.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of T. antarctica var. antarctica vegetative and resting stages are compared using light and transmission electron microscopy. Resting spores contain noticeably more lipid reserves than do vegetative cells. Numerous mitochondria and generally fewer numbers of other organelles are eliminated from spores into an abortive daughter cell when the spore formation division sequence is terminated. The remaining spore contents are a compact arrangement of organelles with lipid bodies predominating. These two stages are thus ultrastructurally distinct, and differences in their chemical composition can be manifested as cytological modifications.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Four new species of Henneguya (myxosporidan) are described from Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque (channel catfish). They are as follows: Henneguya postexilis sp. n. and Henneguya longicauda sp. n. from the gills; Henneguya adiposa sp. n. from the adipose fin; and Henneguya diversis sp. n. from the liver, kidney, connective tissue of muscles and fins, and tumor-like external growths. Henneguya pellis sp. n. is described from the dermis of Ictalurus furcatus (LeSueur) (blue catfish). The development stages of all described species are discussed. Henneguya exilis Kudo was found on the gills of one I. punctatus; notes on its spore characteristics are presented.  相似文献

The structure of the frustule of auxospores, resting spores and vegetative cells of Chaetoceros muelleri Lemm. are described with LM and SEM. Vegetative frustules are relatively small and lightly silicified, are not united into filaments, and appear unornamented under LM and SEM. The setae are circular to subcircular in transverse section with spines and puncta arranged in a spiral pattern. The resting spore and auxospore frustules are more silicified than the vegetative frustules and appear unornamented under LM and SEM. The auxospores of C. muelleri were previously unknown.  相似文献

Some, but not all, marine pennate diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia H. Peragallo are associated with the production of domoic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning. Distinguishing between potentially toxic and nontoxic representatives of this genus is time-consuming and difficult because it demands scanning electron microscopy of cleaned frustules. The objective of this work is to speed and ease identification of these organisms by using whole-cell (in situ) hybridization and species-specific large-subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA)-targeted oligonucleotide probes. Toward that end, cultures of P. australis Frenguelli, P. pungens (Grunow) Hasle, P. multiseries (Hasle) Hasle, P. fraudulenta (P. T. Cleve) Heiden, P. heimii Manguin, P. delicatissima (P. T. Cleve) Heiden, P. pseudo-delicatissima (Hasle) Hasle, and P. americana (Hasle) Fryxell were screened with a suite of 15 putative species-specific probes. Of those, a subset of eight probes was found that distinguished each species tested. In addition, Pseudo-nitzschia chloroplasts were labeled with a probe directed against a eubacterial-conserved sequence. Identification of new cultures based on their reactivity toward a set of probes agreed with species designations as defined by morphological criteria. Whole-cell hybridization is a rapid, simple, and cost-effective technique for discriminating among cultured Pseudo-nitzschia species.  相似文献

A new diatom genus Conticribra is erected to accommodate C. tricircularis, described from a freshwater Pliocene deposit in Trout Creek, Oregon (USA). The genus accommodates species possessing: (i) loculate areolae with (semi-) continuous cribra; (ii) non-plicated valve face; (iii) rimoportula located on the valve mantle, replacing a fultoportula. Conticribra tricircularis has no valve face fultoportulae and can easily be distinguished by its marginal fultoportulae with four satellite pores arranged in three rings. Three species are transferred to the new genus from Thalassiosira sensu lato. Using evidence from the fossil record and recent molecular data, a hypothesis concerning the freshwater origin of Conticribra is discussed.  相似文献

Resting spores of Thalassiosira scotia Fryx. et Hoban were abundant in phytoplankton net hauls collected from the Scotia Sea south of South Georgia in December 1981. Primary valves are distinguished from secondary valves by the presence of marginal striae with rounded, shoelike protrusions, villi surrounding marginal areolae and marginal striae, greater numbers of central strutted processes, and differences in structure of occluded processes. Densities of marginal strutted processes also tend to differ, though ranges overlap. Thalassiosira scotia is most closely related to T. antarctica, differing from that taxon by having coarser areolation, heavier silicification, and more prominent occluded processes. Rudimentary valves of T. scotia differ from those of T. antarctica.  相似文献

Resting spore formation during short time-scale upwelling and its significance were investigated in the field and by a simple theoretical model. Field observations of spore formation ofLeptocylindrus danicus were made off Izu Peninsula, Japan. A rapid increase in ratio of resting spore to vegetative cell numbers indicated thatL. danicus formed resting spores quickly as a response to nutrient depletion in the upwelled water, although only a very low number of resting spores was found in the upwelling. A simple model was constructed to investigate the possible advantages of spore formation during short time-scale upwelling. This showed that there is a critical time-scale for resting spore formation to be advantageous. The nutrient depletion period of the upwelling off Izu was shorter than the critical time-scale determined by the model. Rapid-sinking of resting spores may increase further the critical time-scale, unless spores return with upwelling water. For short time-scale upwelling, the vegetative cell may be better suited than the resting spore for enduring a short period of nutrient depletion. The morphology of single-sporangial isolates of lettuce, tomato, mustard, and oat Olpidium brassicae (Wor.) Dang. growing in their respective hosts as well as in cowpea were compared in situ and after extraction from the roots. The sporangia, zoospores, and resting spores of all isolates were within the established limits of the species. Single exit tubes or pores predominated which means that these isolates should not be transferred to the genus Pleotrachelus. A satisfactory assay for the presence of resting spores was developed by air-drying of the roots for a week or longer. This treatment killed zoospores and vegetative sporangia, but not resting spores. Factors affecting resting spore formation were investigated unsuccessfully. The thermal death point of zoospores of mustard isolates that did not form resting spores was between 40 and 45 C for 10 min.  相似文献

Morphologic, diagnostic characters of the subgenus Nitzschia, genus Nitzschia Hassall 1845, and the marine planktonic genus Pseudo-nitzschia H. Peragallo in H. & M. Peragallo 1900 were compared. Colony formation by overlap of cell ends; weakly silicified, shallow, and flattened valves; an extremely eccentric raphe, not elevated above the general level of the valve; lack of con-opea; and striated girdle bands characterize Pseudo-nitzschia as a natural group and a genus separate from Nitzschia.  相似文献

A cryptic species of the Tetrahymena pyriformis complex, Tetrahymena australis, has been known for a long time but never properly diagnosed based on taxonomic methods. The species name is thus invalid according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Recently, a population isolated from a freshwater lake in Wuhan, China was investigated using live observations, silver staining methods and gene sequence data. This organism can be separated from other described species of the T. pyriformis complex by its relatively small body size, the number of somatic kineties and differences in sequences of two genes, namely the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1). We compared the SSU rRNA gene sequences of all available Tetrahymena species to reveal the nucleotide differences within this genus. The sequence of the Wuhan population is identical to two sequences of a previously isolated strain of T. australis (ATCC #30831). Phylogenetic analyses indicate that these three sequences (X56167, M98015, KT334373) cluster with Tetrahymena shanghaiensis (EF070256) in a polytomy. However, sequence divergence of the cox1 gene between the Wuhan population and another strain of T. australis (ATCC #30271) is 1.4%, suggesting that these may represent different subspecies.  相似文献

1. Water velocity plays an important role in shaping plant community structure in flowing waters although few authors have yet attempted to explain the adaptation of plants to flow. 2. We aimed to test two hypotheses, that: (i) some emergent macrophytes reconfigure their shoot distribution in fast currents and form clumps, and (ii) the shape and morphology of such clumps minimises drag caused by the current. The study focuses on three emergent macrophytes that co‐occur along a gradient of water velocity. 3. The species showed a clear zonation in response to water depth and current velocity. Phragmites australis occupied shallower and more slowly flowing water than Typha angustifolia and Zizania latifolia, which had similar preferences. 4. Both T. angustifolia and Z. latifolia shoots were more clumped at high velocity, whereas they were more randomly distributed at low flow or in stagnant water. Because of the low shoot density, water flowed more easily through T. angustifolia clumps, whereas Z. latifolia clumps had a high shoot density and large amounts of trapped litter, causing stagnant water in the centre of the clump. The clumps of Z. latifolia with a high density of shoots were longer and narrower than T. angustifolia clumps. Phragmites australis was less tolerant of flow than the other two species and large amounts of litter trapped in the clumps impaired flow. 5. The shoot distribution of both T. angustifolia and Z. latifolia is reconfigured at high flow and this minimises drag on the clumps.  相似文献

Studies considering the biology and ecology of the toxic bloom‐forming species, Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax, are rare. Our results highlight five features not described before in A. pseudogonyaulax life cycle: (i) A. pseudogonyaulax gametes showed two modes of conjugation, anisogamy and isogamy, (ii) sexual conjugation occurs either in the dark or in the light phase by engulfment or a fusion process, (iii) the presence of planozygote and newly formed cysts in monoclonal culture suggests homothallism, (iv) newly formed cysts have very dark vesicular content and are mostly unparatabulated when observed under light microscope and (v) natural resting cysts are able to give either a planomeiocyte or two vegetative cells. Cyst viability was enhanced after 5 months of cold storage (4°C), with excystment rate reaching 97% after 3 d of incubation. Excystment rate was highest (43%–79%) in Enriched Natural Sea Water diluted culture medium, whereas few germling cells were able to survive without the culture medium (0%–13%). Salinity‐irradiance experiments revealed that the highest cell concentrations occur at high irradiances for all the tested salinities. Vegetative growth rates generally increased with increasing irradiance, and were less dependent on salinity variations. The relatively low growth rate, low cell densities in the laboratory, and the notable capacity of producing cysts along growth phases of A. pseudogonyaulax could explain the occurrence of high resting cysts densities in the sediment of Bizerte lagoon and the relatively low abundances of vegetative cells in the water column.  相似文献

New fossil species, Puncticulata versiformis sp. nov. and Cyclotella kathmanduensis sp. nov., are described from lacustrine sediments in the Kathmandu Basin on the southern slope of the Nepal Himalaya. They were dominant in the Middle Pleistocene. Both LM and SEM observations reveal their unique morphological features. Puncticulata versiformis is characterized by (1) various valve outlines (circular, elliptical, or oval), (2) a tangentially undulate central area, (3) a complex alveolar structure composed of three kinds of costae (thick costae, thin costae, and thin and short costae), (4) well‐developed spines (Y‐shaped and tapering) located on one side of the valve face/mantle area junction, and (5) a valvocopula with an extremely undulate margin. The species‐specific feature of C. kathmanduensis is the presence of two kinds of alveolate zones in a single valve: type‐1 zone composed only of normal costae, and type‐2 zone composed of both normal costae and recessed costae bearing fultoportulae. Changes in valve ornamentation occur in these two species from initial valves to vegetative valves. In P. versiformis, the arrangement of areolae with internal domed cribra and fultoportulae in the central area changes from radial rows in the initial valve to groups in the vegetative valve. In the initial valve of C. kathmanduensis, the type‐1 alveolate zone is generally absent.  相似文献
