Population structure and distribution of the thornback ray, Raja clavata , L. 1758, in the northern and central Adriatic Sea were described based on data from bottom trawl surveys conducted in the area between 1996 and 2006 within the scope of the 'MEDITS' project. R. clavata was caught at depths between 23 and 270 m; highest abundance and density indices were recorded at a depth stratum 50–100 m. The sex ratio was close to 1 : 1. Length at first sexual maturity for both sexes was calculated. Length–weight relationships were obtained for males, females and the whole sample. Calculated parameters of the length–weight ratio showed a positive allometry for both sexes. The recent state of the population was compared with data from the 1948–49 'Hvar' expedition. The comparison revealed that significant changes have occurred in distribution and abundance of R. clavata in the Adriatic Sea since the time of the 'Hvar' expedition. During the 1948–49 'Hvar' expedition R. clavata was distributed throughout the entire continental shelf; during the 1996–2006 MEDITS expedition the species was found only in restricted areas and with much lower abundances. Significant changes also occurred in the demographic composition of the population. All described changes indicate an over-fishing of the thornback ray in the Adriatic Sea, a result of the high fishing intensity to which the species has been exposed for the past 60 years.  相似文献

Population histories depend on the interplay between exogeneous and endogeneous factors. In marine species, phylogeographic and demographic patterns are often shaped by sea level fluctuations, water currents and dispersal ability. Using mitochondrial control region sequences (n = 120), we infer phylogeographic structure and historic population size changes of a common littoral fish species, the black‐faced blenny Tripterygion delaisi (Perciformes, Blennioidei, Tripterygiidae) from the north‐eastern Adriatic Sea. We find that Adriatic T. delaisi are differentiated from conspecific populations in the remaining Mediterranean, but display little phylogeographic structure within the Adriatic basin. The pattern is consistent with passive dispersal of planktonic larvae along cyclonic currents within the Adriatic Sea, but limited active dispersal of adults. Demographic reconstructions are consistent with recent population expansion, probably triggered by rising sea levels after the last glacial maximum (LGM). Placing the onset of population growth between the LGM and the warming of surface waters (18 000–13 000 years BP) and employing a novel expansion dating approach, we inferred a substitution rate of 2.61–3.61% per site per MY. Our study is one of only few existing investigations of the genetic structure of animals within the Adriatic basin and is the first to provide an estimate for mitochondrial control region substitution rates in blennioid fishes.  相似文献

The dwarf lanternshark (Etmopterus perryi) is the smallest known described shark, and practically no information has been available on this species since first described in the mid-1980s. Therefore, the aim of this work is to describe, for the first time, the population structure regarding dwarf lanternshark in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. During deep-water research surveys conducted along the Colombian Caribbean coast, 87 stations were sampled using the swept area method. A total of 153 dwarf lanternshark individuals were caught in depths ranging from 230 to 530 m. This information was used to describe the size structures, morphological measurements including length-at-weight relationship, length at maturity in females and the spatial distribution of mean length and biomass of the species. The lengths of individuals ranged from 78.02 to 289.00 mm total length (TL), which is a new record of maximum length for this species. The spatial distribution of mean lengths and biomass distributions show high abundances and high relative mean lengths in the northeast area off Santa Marta and the area northwest of Riohacha. The mean biomass density in the whole prospected area was 5.52 kg km−2. Length at 50% maturity in females was estimated in 203 mm TL (95% C.I. : 190–214 mm). Deep-water elasmobranch species, such as the dwarf lantern shark, are expected to show extremely low resilience to fishing exploitation, even when they are not targeted by commercial fishing. Therefore, the information reported in this study can serve as a baseline upon which management measurements can be proposed for the conservation of this shark species.  相似文献

This paper explores structure and spatial distribution of fish assemblages in an area of the central‐western Mediterranean Sea (south Sardinian deep‐waters) at depths between 546 and 1598 m. A total of 67 species (12 chondrichthyes and 55 teleosteans) were sampled. Multivariate analysis showed a clear pattern of zonation. Three main assemblages were identified within the vertical range investigated: the first situated in the shallower area between 546 and 699 m, the second group between 720 and 1099 m, and the third between 1145 and 1598 m. Abundance values declined with increasing depth. Highest biomass values were found at depths of 720–1099 m with the presence of larger species such as Galeus melastomus, Mora moro, Trachyrhynchus scabrus and Alepocephalus rostratus. Species richness decreased with depth. The deepest bottoms of the central‐western Mediterranean Sea shelter an ichthyofauna dominated by small to medium‐sized species living in a food‐scarce environment in which some large mobile fishes are widespread.  相似文献

The eelpout Lycodes soldatovi was found at depths of 153 to 1005 m in the Sea of Okhotsk; however, it usually inhabits the depth range of 400 to 800. The mean and maximum abundance and the biomass of this species were 198.5 and 1037 individuals per km2 and 173.7 and 1275 kg/km2, respectively. In view of the data on the distribution of young fish (up to 30 cm in total body length) and the reports on the absence of Lycodes larvae, a hypothesis was developed that this species spawns predominantly in the waters off western Kamchatka and eastern Sakhalin at the depth range of 700 to 900 m. Large individuals (>50 cm) exhibit higher migratory activity and are more tolerant of environmental conditions. That is why they are encountered throughout the distribution area of this species, even in subzero temperature areas. Lycodes soldatovi seems to be a typical inhabitant of the Sea of Okhotsk, except for the waters off the South and Central Kuril Islands and the Pacific waters off the North Kuril Islands.  相似文献

The red coral Corallium rubrum (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) is an exploited, long-lived sessile species from the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent coastline in the Atlantic Ocean. Surveys of genetic variation using microsatellites have shown that populations of C. rubrum are characterized by strong differentiation at the local scale but a study of the phylogeography of this species was still lacking. Here, we used seven polymorphic microsatellite loci, together with sequence data from an intron of the elongation factor 1 (EF1) gene, to investigate the genetic structure of C. rubrum across its geographical range in the western Mediterranean Sea and in the Adriatic Sea. The EF1 sequences were also used to analyse the consequences of demographic fluctuations linked with past environmental change. Clustering analysis with microsatellite loci highlighted three to seven genetic groups with the distinction of North African and Adriatic populations; this distinction appeared significant with AMOVA and differentiation tests. Microsatellite and EF1 data extended the isolation by distance pattern previously observed for this species at the western Mediterranean scale. EF1 sequences confirmed the genetic differentiation observed between most samples with microsatellites. A statistical parsimony network of EF1 haplotypes provided no evidence of high sequence divergence among regions, suggesting no long-term isolation. Selective neutrality tests on microsatellites and EF1 were not significant but should be interpreted with caution in the case of EF1 because of the low sample sizes for this locus. Our results suggest that recent Quaternary environmental fluctuations had a limited impact on the genetic structure of C. rubrum.  相似文献

The goal of this paper was to explain variability of phytoplankton in a shallow coastal area in relation to physico-chemical parameters. Temporal variability and composition of phytoplankton were investigated in the Kotor Bay, a small bay located in the south-eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. Samplings were performed weekly from February 2008 to January 2009 at one station in the inner part of the Kotor Bay, at five depths (0 m, 2 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m). Phosphates, nitrites and nitrates ranged from values under the level of detection to the maximum values of 1.54, 1.53 and 23.91 μmol l−1, respectively. The phytoplankton biomass — represented by chlorophyll a concentration — ranged from 0.12 to 6.78 mg m−3, reaching a maximum in summer. Diatoms were present throughout the whole sampling period, reaching the highest abundance in March (3.42×105 cells l−1at surface). The peak of dinoflagellates in July (2.2×106 cells l−1 at surface) was due to a single species, Prorocentrum micans. The toxic dinoflagellate Dinophysis fortii occurred at a concentration of 2140 cells l−1 in May. The present results of phytoplankton assemblages and distribution provide valuable information for this part of the south-eastern Adriatic Sea where data is currently absent.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) for three native fish species of the Comacchio Lagoon (northwestern Adriatic Sea, Italy) were determined. The species Zosterisessor ophiocephalus (Pallas, 1814), Pomatoschistus canestrini (Ninni, 1883) and Knipowitschia panizzae (Verga, 1841), were sampled monthly from 2010 to 2014. Both Pcanestrini and Kpanizzae are listed as protected species in the Habitat Directive and the Berne Convention and there is no information on their LWRs in FishBase.  相似文献

Using morphometric, meristic and qualitative characters, we confirmed a specific status of a clade discovered based on molecular data only. The newly described species Phoxinus krkae has a very local distribution in the upper Krka River but is easily morphologically distinguished from geographically neighbouring species with much wider ranges: Phoxinus lumaireul, Phoxinus marsilii and Phoxinus csikii. Phoxinus krkae is well differentiated in statistical analyses and differs from other species of Phoxinus in northern Adriatic Sea drainages and right-bank tributaries of the middle and lower River Danube by a combination of characters, none of them unique: caudal peduncle length 1.9–2.2 times minimum depth of caudal peduncle; upper lip not projecting beyond lower lip; rostral fold absent; total number of scales in lateral series 74–84; lateral line incomplete and interrupted, commonly 17–49 (< 60% of total number of scales in lateral series) with no or few canal segments on posterior body and caudal peduncle; scales on belly extending forward to over middle of distance between pelvic-fin base and pectoral-fin origin; patches of breast scales commonly connected by scattered scales or forming 1–3 regular rows of scales; total vertebrae commonly 38–39 (22 + 17, 22 + 16 or 21 + 17). The study reveals unrecognised morphological diversity within the group and provides the groundwork for future taxonomic study in Phoxinus in the Adriatic region and the Danube Basin.  相似文献

We studied the vertical structure of the phytoplankton community in two toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the offshore Baltic Sea. In 1994, vertically separated potentially toxic, diazotrophic and mixotrophic species (belonging to Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Prymnesiophyceae) dominated. In 1997, picocyanobacteria, mainly in colonies, made up 40–50% of the total phytoplankton carbon biomass in the top 20 m both day and night. Colony-forming species of picocyanobacteria seem to be occasionally important and hitherto underestimated in the Baltic Sea.We found species-specific depth distribution patterns. Nodularia spumigena and Anabaena spp. were observed mainly above 10 m depth, while Aphanizomenon sp. was mostly found deeper, especially at night. Dinophysis norvegica was only abundant near the seasonal pycnocline and showed very limited diurnal migration. Other flagellates, including small Cryptophyceae and 10 identified Chrysochromulina species, occurred down to 40 m depth. Their vertical migration may help to retrieve nutrients from below the summer pycnocline. We conclude that considerable differences in dominating functional groups may occur between years/bloom stages, and that the vertical distribution pattern of many species is recurring at similar environmental conditions, suggesting species-specific niche-separation.  相似文献

Four sand‐dwelling species of the marine dinoflagellate genus Sinophysis, including one new species, have been examined from intertidal and subtidal sand, from the Sea of Japan. The morphological features of these species were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Sinophysis minima sp. nov. is flattened laterally and is 17.5–35.0 μm in length and 15.0–27.5 μm in depth, with a length/depth ratio of 1.1–1.4, an epitheca depth of 5.0–7.5 μm, and a sulcus length of about three‐quarters the hypotheca length. Sinophysis ebriola (Herdman) Balech, Sinophysis grandis Hoppenrath and Sinophysis stenosoma Hoppenrath were recorded for the first time in the seas of Russia. Sinophysis stenosoma is the most common species in the Sea of Japan. All species usually occurred together in the region investigated. Additional information on the known species is provided.  相似文献

The population dynamics parameters of Diplodus annularis from the eastern middle Adriatic Sea were studied. Total lengths of 1704 specimens ranging from 3.3 to 23.0 cm were obtained from commercial and fishery‐independent catches (2000–2002). The species spawns from April through the end of August, with a peak in May. Overall male to female ratio was 1.00 : 1.05. The species is a rudimentary hermaphrodite in the Adriatic Sea. Total lengths (TL) at 50% maturity were 9.0 cm for males and 10.0 cm for females. These estimated sizes were smaller than the minimum legal landing size (MLS = 15 cm) and greater than the actual minimum landing size (Lc = 7.1 cm) for the bottom trawl net. All specimens sampled were fully mature above 13 cm TL. The oldest individual was 13 years old. Length–weight relationship showed close to isometric growth (b = 3.073). Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were: L = 23.95 cm; K = 0.126 per year; t0 = −1.664 year; r2 = 0.896. The low value of total mortality (Z = 0.72) was a consequence of the relatively low rate of natural mortality (M = 0.39) and fishing mortality (F = 0.33). The exploitation ratio was E = 0.46. Estimated parameters and the relative yield‐per‐recruit analysis did not indicate any overexploitation of the species in the study area. However, the estimates include uncertainties and require further confirmation, especially of the natural mortality.  相似文献

Understanding the distribution of genetic diversity in the light of past demographic events linked with climatic shifts will help to forecast evolutionary trajectories of ecosystems within the current context of climate change. In this study, mitochondrial sequences and microsatellite loci were analysed using traditional population genetic approaches together with Bayesian dating and the more recent approximate Bayesian computation scenario testing. The genetic structure and demographic history of a commercial fish, the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus, was investigated throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The results suggest that the species recently underwent population expansions, in both seas, likely concomitant with the warming period following the Last Glacial Maximum, 20 000 years ago. A weak contemporaneous genetic differentiation was identified between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. However, the genetic diversity was similar for populations of the two seas, suggesting a high number of colonizers entered the Black Sea during the interglacial period and/or the presence of a refugial population in the Black Sea during the glacial period. Finally, within seas, an east/west genetic differentiation in the Adriatic seems to prevail, whereas the Black Sea does not show any structured spatial genetic pattern of its population. Overall, these results suggest that the Black Sea is not that isolated from the Mediterranean, and both seas revealed similar evolutionary patterns related to climate change and changes in sea level.  相似文献

Cladocora caespitosa is an endemic coral of the Mediterranean Sea and an important carbonate bioconstructor that adds 3D complexity to the habitat, thus increasing marine biodiversity. Despite its important role in the ecosystem, the real status of the population along most of the Mediterranean coastline is still poorly investigated and very little is known about the resilience of the species. Using non-destructive visual surveys, colonies of C. caespitosa were investigated by SCUBA diving in 2013 and 2015 at seven sites of the northern Adriatic Sea (southern part of the Gulf of Trieste). Data about colony size, index of sphericity and corallite diameter were collected. Almost all biometrical parameters differed significantly among sampling sites, showing low occurrence of the larger size classes compared to the abundance of small-sized colonies. This pattern of distribution is typical of long-lived organisms. The positively skewed colony size distribution could be due to both a high mortality rate of small colonies unable to reach larger size classes, and to a high fragmentation rate of colonies, related to a strong hydrodynamic forces. The northern Adriatic population of C. caespitosa has previously been investigated by Schiller, who reported size and abundance data of colonies from one site, at a depth range of 2–5?m. We compared these data with our findings from the same sampling site, adding new information about the ecology of C. caespitosa. After a 30-year period, the comparison shows a change in the size distribution of colonies, with a decrease of the small class and an increase of the medium class of colonies. In view of these conclusions, further assessments are required in order to evaluate the trend of the northernmost C. caespitosa population in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Data on the distribution and biology of the deep-sea portunid crab Bathynectes maravigna are reported for the Mediterranean Sea, based on several fisheries research surveys. Densities are low and, therefore, biological data are scarce. In the western Mediterranean, the species is much commoner in Alborán Sea than in the Catalano-Balearic Sea. Occurrences are also scarce in the southern Adriatic and northwestern Thyrrenian Sea, as well as in the Ionian Sea. The Alborán Sea and the seas surrounding the southern Italian peninsula are the areas where densities are the highest. The occurrence depth range was found to be 245–786 m, but most of the occurrences took place deeper than 500 m. Sizes ranged between 9 and 51 mm carapace length in males and between 12 and 51 mm in females. Ovigerous females have been only reported in October–December and March–May. Eighty three percent of both males and females are right-handed. Sexual dimorphism was present in cheliped length with males having longer chelae than females. The species appears to be much commoner in those areas where Atlantic influence is the highest.  相似文献

The reproductive biology and sexual pattern of Serranus scriba (Linnaeus, 1758) were examined in the Trogir Bay area (middle‐eastern Adriatic) from June 2001 to May 2002. The total length (TL) of all observed specimens ranged from 7.1 to 20.0 cm; 50% of the population of this species sexually matured at 9.3 cm TL. Spawning took place from May to August, with a peak in June and July. Positive allometry was established in the length–weight relationship (b = 3.15).  相似文献

Populations of Noctiluca scintillans (hereafter Noctiluca) were compared from two regions: the northeastern-central Black Sea and the northern Adriatic Sea. In both seas samples were collected in near-shore waters 2–3 times per month during 2004–2012. For analysis of feeding activities and seasonal dynamics additional cruise data on the open waters of the Black Sea were used. Comparison between the two populations shows similarity in size structure with two classes 401–500 μm and 501–600 μm being the most numerous. Seasonal changes in cell abundance in both seas demonstrated a regular annual maximum with the peak period of high abundances in May–June with additional sporadic peaks in other seasons. In spring the average number of food vacuoles in the cell (1.78) and the proportion of feeding cells in populations (79%) in the Adriatic Sea were similar to those in the Black Sea (1.58 and 76%). In September–October, these parameters were lower both in the Adriatic Sea (0.69 and 49%) and in the Black Sea (1.46 and 65%) demonstrating that Noctiluca was better provided with food in spring. Among biotic parameters (wet phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll biomass and zooplankton species) only the concentration of the eggs of Calanus euxinus was significantly positively correlated with abundance of Noctiluca. The possible effect of a high concentration of copepod eggs on the growth of Noctiluca in the peak period is discussed. An obvious negative relationship was observed between Noctiluca cell numbers in the peak period and wind velocity in both seas. The most significant negative correlation was observed between the number of windy hours per month (velocity more than 5–6 m s−1) and cell concentrations in the Black Sea (r = −0.92) and in the northern Adriatic Sea (r = −0.67). On this basis, a new hypothesis has been proposed and discussed: in connection with features of the food behavior of Noctiluca, its outbursts during the peak period are controlled by the wind. An evident positive relationship was observed between the number of Noctiluca in the peak period and its quantity in the preceding months in both seas. Thus, we suggest that abundance data during early spring and weather forecasts (winds) may be used for medium-term prediction of Noctiluca outbursts and red tides.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate a prey body size from the hard parts (e.g. otoliths) of a fish species frequently found in the guts of predators. Length–weight relationships between otolith size (length, height, weight and aspect ratio) and fish size (total length and weight) were determined for four fish species captured in the Arabian Sea by bottom trawl (2015 survey on‐board FORV Sagar Sampada, 200–300 m depth), off the west coast of India: Psenopsis cyanea, Pterygotrigla hemisticta, Bembrops caudimacula and Hoplostethus rubellopterus. No significant differences were noted between the size of the left and right otoliths (t test) in any of the four species. The length–weight relationship of the otolith in all four species showed a negative allometric growth pattern (t test, p < .05). The data fitted well to the regression model for otolith length (OL), otolith height (OH) and otolith weight (OW) to total length (TL) and total weight (TW). Results showed that these relationships are a helpful tool in predicting fish size from the otoliths and in calculating the biomass of these less‐studied fish species during feeding studies and palaentology.  相似文献

Length–weight and length–length relationships are described for 10 of the most important and most frequent small, middle‐size and large pelagic fish species from the Adriatic Sea, namely Sardina pilchardus Walbaum 1792, Sardinella aurita Valenciennes 1847, Sprattus sprattus Linnaeus 1758, Engraulis encrasicolus Linnaeus 1758, Belone belone Linnaeus 1761, Scomber scombrus Linnaeus 1758, Scomber japonicus Houttuyn 1780, Thunnus thynnus Linnaeus 1758, Auxis rochei Risso 1810 and Sarda sarda Bloch 1793. Length–length equations for converting size measurements: standard length (SL) and fork length (FL) to total length (TL) and vice versa, were linear.  相似文献
