Eleven skull and mandible dimensions were measured in arctic foxes, Alopex lagopus, from Fennoscandia, the Far East (Siberia), Baffin Island (Canada), Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard (n=278), and comparisons with data from the literature were made, including samples from most parts of the species' circumpolar range. Significant differences between regions were found, notably Fennoscandian and Siberian foxes were larger than foxes from Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard. Overall skull size was reduced with increasing latitude, which may indicate energetic constraints on body size in high latitudes due to a lower primary productivity.  相似文献

Summary Forty taxa of testate amoebae were found in 15 aquatic samples collected in East Greenland (Angmasssalik Region), Jan Mayen and N.W. Spitsbergen. The number of species per sample is rather small, and the contribution of strictly aquatic species to the fauna is limited. A geographical shift in the importance of some genera can be demonstrated. Centropyxis aerophila and Paraquadrula irregularis are two of the most frequent species. The first-named is characteristic for acidoligotrophic waters, while the latter belongs to an alkaline-mesotrophic community. A third community is named after the commonest species, Trinema lineare. It seems to prefer a somewhat intermediate type of water.  相似文献

 Nineteen hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) were tagged with satellite-linked platform terminal transmitters (PTT) on the sea ice near Jan Mayen. Fifteen were instrumented after completion of the moult in July 1992 (five males, ten females, at 71°N, 12°W), and four during breeding in March 1993 (four females, at 69°N, 20°W). Sixteen of the seals were tagged with Satellite-Linked Time-Depth-Recorders (SLTDR), yielding location, dive depth and dive duration data. The average (±SD) longevity of all PTTs was 199±84 days (n=19; range: 43–340 days), and they yielded 12,834 location fixes. Between tagging in July 1992 and pupping in March 1993, two seals remained in or near the ice off the east coast of Greenland for most of the tracking period. However, most of the seals made one or several trips away from the ice edge, mostly to distant waters. These excursions had an average (±SD) duration of 47±22 days (n=46; range: 4–99 days). Eight seals travelled to waters off the Faeroe Islands, three to the continental shelf break south of Bear Island, and three to the Irminger Sea southwest of Iceland. Eleven seals were tracked in the period between breeding (March/April) and moulting (July). Several of these spent extended periods at sea west of the British Isles, or in the Norwegian Sea. To persist in oligotrophic waters, reef-building corals rely on nutritional interactions with symbiotic dinoflagellates of the family Symbiodiniaceae, but the true diversity of this family remains poorly characterised. In this paper, we assess Symbiodiniaceae richness at Atauro Island (Timor-Leste) as well as on reefs of the neighbouring Timor mainland, using direct sequencing of three gene regions: cob gene, mitochondrion; ITS2 region, nucleus; and psbAncr region, chloroplast; in addition to a highly multiplexed application of next-generation sequencing. These geographic sites are among the most biodiverse in the world, but have never had their symbiont communities studied. Despite their proximity, our results reveal symbiont richness 1.25 times higher at Atauro Island than the Timor mainland, a result evident in dominant sequences. In contrast, Timor had a significantly richer background sequence diversity. Although sampling was restricted to shallow sites only, symbiont richness at Atauro Island was also higher than comparative reefscapes globally, after standardising for number of taxa sampled. While Atauro and Timor have related symbiont populations, with the same novel types recorded at both sites, there were also clear differences in symbiont composition between the two geographic regions, with Timor displaying a consortium more characteristic of stressed reef environments (proportionally hosting twice as many Durusdinium sequences, formerly clade D, as Atauro). These results reveal a symbiont richness that matches the high biodiversity of these reefs, but also potentially negative effects of proximal human populations on Symbiodiniaceae, even when previous studies have shown corals to be largely unaffected.

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Duration and peak frequency of Wren Troglodytes troglodytes songs differ between Welsh islands (Skokholm, Flat Holm, and Sully Island) and a mainland site, suggesting random or cultural divergence.

Aims: The study tests for differences in bioacoustic traits in Wren song between four breeding sites.

Methods: Songs from breeding male Wrens were recorded from three Welsh islands and a representative location on the local mainland. Each sonogram was measured for six variables from the whole song and two distinct phrases from the beginning and middle. The variables were measured manually using an open source acoustic tool and compared between sites using generalized linear mixed-effects models.

Results: There was significant variation in song variables between island sites and the mainland. Skokholm Wren songs were significantly longer in duration than all other sites by up to 66%. Peak frequency was significantly different across all sites with Sully Island having the highest peak frequency and Skokholm the lowest.

Conclusion: The differences in song duration and frequency do not directly suggest a trend associated with selective pressures such as habitat or noise, but instead may be explained by non-selective drivers such as cultural drift or local dialect formation.  相似文献

Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is an effective predator of spider mites. In Korea, it is distributed on Jeju Island, but is never found further north on the mainland. Due to poor natural control of spider mites by native predatory mites in mainland orchards, commercialization of the Jeju Island strain of N. californicus on the mainland is currently being considered. We conducted two field experiments in mainland apple orchards during winter 2008 and 2009 to assess the effects of sheltered ground habitats on the overwintering potential of N. californicus. In the first experiment, all of the N. californicus individuals that were experimentally placed on bare ground died within 27 days, whereas 70% of mites sheltered by fallen apple leaves or urethane foam survived for more than 27 days. In the second experiment, individuals were released directly onto the ground, either with or without urethane foam. More individuals were found within urethane foam plots than in plots without foam. Sheltered ground habitats would be an important factor for N. californicus when selecting overwintering sites, and could eventually lead to enhanced winter survival. On the other hand, no live N. californicus individuals were found by the end of the winter in either experiment, which suggests that N. californicus could not successfully overwinter in the study area, even in sheltered ground habitats.  相似文献

Summary Forty-five taxa of testate amoebae were found in 53 samples from mosses and lichens collected in East Greenland (Angmagssalik region), Jan Mayen and N.W. Spitsbergen. It is possible to distinguish four associations, with a different responses in relation to the moisture content, the hydrogen-ion concentration and the increasing continentality with latitude. A trend of diminishing diversity and number of taxa towards the north is also shown.  相似文献

Genetic variation of nuclear ribosomal ITS (nrITS) and chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) regions was investigated in Brasenia schreberi (Cabombaceae) to assess the population structure and to infer the evolutionary relationship among 12 populations distributed in South Korea. The combined sequence of the two regions was aligned to 2,069 bp, of which 28 sites were variable. In total, 20 genotypes were identified from 240 individuals of B. schreberi. Genotype diversity (Gd) and nucleotide diversity (Pi) on Jeju Island (Gd = 0.2511, Pi = 0.00012) were higher than those of the mainland of South Korea (Gd = 0.1358, Pi = 0.00005). The relatively low level of genetic variation of the mainland populations is associated with its higher genetic differentiation (G ST = 0.095 on mainland and 0.039 on Jeju Island) and human activities. Minimum spanning network analysis demonstrated that the investigated populations of B. schreberi were subdivided into two geographical groups: the mainland of South Korea and Jeju Island. In addition, analysis of molecular variation showed that a large proportion (73.55%) of genetic differentiation existed between the two regions. These results strongly suggest the presence of significant barriers to gene flow between regions. Thus, the management unit for B. schreberi should be carefully designed to avoid the potential risk that can results from the admixture of individuals from the mainland and Jeju Island regions.  相似文献

Invertebrates at 20 sites on 19 Campbell Island streams were sampled over the Austral summer of 1996/97. Twelve of the 16 benthic invertebrate taxa known from the island were collected. The most abundant group was the Crustacea, which included an isopod (Notidotea lacustris) and two amphipods, one belonging to the family Eusiridae and one to the suborder Gammaridea. Five species of Diptera were found (three chironomids; Orthocladiinae sp., Chironominae sp. and Maoridiamesa insularis, as well as an empidid and a simuliid Austrosimulium campbellense). One trichopteran, the hydroptilid caddis Oxyethira albiceps and two plecopteran species Rungaperla campbelli and R. longicauda and unidentified Oligochaetes were also collected. In general, Campbell Island streams are stable, deeply incised, have unusually high salinity from wind-blown sea spray and a unique benthic invertebrate fauna. With the exception of high altitude streams with large boulders which had invertebrate communities dominated by Crustacea and the endemic stonefly of the genus Rungaperla, none of the measured environmental variables or geographic location could explain the distinctive communities found. The species-poor stream fauna and the absence of many invertebrate families commonly found on mainland New Zealand appears to be related to the extreme isolation and geological history of the island.  相似文献

Island communities are exposed to several evolutionary and ecological processes that lead to changes in their diversity and structure compared to mainland biotas. These phenomena have been observed for various taxa but not for parasitoids, a key group in terms of community diversity and functioning. Here we use the parasitoid communities associated with the moth Acroclita subsequana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in the Macaronesian region, to test whether species richness differs between islands and mainland, and whether island parasitoid faunas are biased towards generalist species. Host larvae were collected on several islands and adjacent mainland, carefully searched for ectoparasitoid larvae and dissected to recover any endoparasitoids. Parasitoids were classified as idiobionts, which usually have a wide host range (i.e. generalists), or koinobionts that are considered specialists. Mainland species richness was lower than expected by chance, with most of the species being koinobionts. On the other hand, island communities showed a greater proportion of idiobiont species. Overall parasitism rates were similar between islands and mainland, but islands had higher rates of parasitism by idiobionts than expected by chance, and mainland areas showed the highest koinobiont parasitism rates. These results suggest that island parasitoid communities are dominated by generalists, in comparison to mainland communities. Several hypotheses may explain this pattern: (1) generalist parasitoids might have better dispersal abilities; (2) they may be less constrained by ‘sequential dependencies’; and (3) island parasitoids probably have fewer competitors and/or predators, thus favouring the establishment of generalists. New studies including multiple hosts, other habitats, and/or more islands are necessary to identify which of these processes shape island parasitoid communities.  相似文献

Coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) that form rhodoliths are important ecosystem engineers and carbonate producers in many polar coastal habitats. This study deals with rhodolith communities from Floskjeret (78°18′N), Krossfjorden (79°08′N), and Mosselbukta (79°53′N), off Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Strong seasonal variations in temperature, salinity, light regime, sea-ice coverage, and turbidity characterize these localities. The coralline algal flora consists of Lithothamnion glaciale and Phymatolithon tenue. Well-developed rhodoliths were recorded between 27 and 47 m water depth, while coralline algal encrustations on lithoclastic cobbles were detected down to 77 m water depth. At all sites, ambient waters were saturated with respect to both aragonite and calcite, and the rhodolith beds were located predominately at dysphotic water depths. The rhodolith-associated macrobenthic fauna included grazing organisms such as chitons and echinoids. With decreasing water depth, the rhodolith pavements were regularly overgrown by non-calcareous Polysiphonia-like red algae. The corallines are thriving and are highly specialized in their adaptations to the physical environment as well as in their interaction with the associated benthic fauna, which is similar to other polar rhodolith communities. The marine environment of Spitsbergen is already affected by a climate-driven ecological regime shift and will lead to an increased borealization in the near future, with presently unpredictable consequences for coralline red algal communities.  相似文献

Marine biofilm communities that developed on artificial substrata were investigated using molecular and microscopic approaches. Polystyrene, Teflon® and four antifouling (AF) paints were immersed for 2 weeks at two contrasting sites near Toulon on the French Mediterranean coast (Toulon military harbour and the natural protected area of Porquerolles Island). Biofilms comprising bacteria and diatoms were detected on all the coatings. The population structure as well as the densities of the microorganisms differed in terms of both sites and coatings. Lower fouling densities were observed at Porquerolles Island compared to Toulon harbour. All bacterial communities (analysed by PCR-DGGE) showed related structure, controlled both by the sites and the type of substrata. Pioneer microalgal communities were dominated by the same two diatom species, viz. Licmophora gracilis and Cylindrotheca closterium, at both sites, irrespective of the substrata involved. However, the density of diatoms followed the same trend at both sites with a significant effect of all the AF coatings compared to Teflon and polystyrene.  相似文献

Among the most numerous seabird and pinniped species of the Fram Strait and the Greenland Sea, little auks Alle alle and harp seals Pagophila (Phoca) groenlandica are very abundant in the mixed Polar/Arctic Waters at the front between the two water masses. This must reflect the presence of very high concentrations of their food, Arctic zooplankton and nekton, massively attracting their predators. Such a high biological production seems to be depending on new primary production based on upwelling and high nutrient concentration. This usually takes place at the ice edge (e.g. July 2005), but hydrological conditions such as eddies can modify its position, east of the front in open water as caused by a subsurface eddy (August 2005), or in ice-covered areas if westerly winds push the pack ice to the east, eventually covering an eddy and causing very high concentrations of little auks and harp seals (July 2008). On the other hand, a dramatic decrease of pack ice coverage can move this water mass farther north and west, making it inaccessible to little auks during their breeding season, and apparently causing breeding failure in Jan Mayen in July 2005. In future years, if a much stronger diminution in sea ice coverage will take place, similar to the retreat in 2005 and 2007, the failure might affect the whole Spitsbergen population, as well as other seabird species feeding mainly at the ice edge.  相似文献

Summary Few studies of island biogeography have been made on islands in which the time of insularization is precisely known. We tested the effects of island formation on ant species diversity in a man-made lake in South Africa, to determine whether island effects are detectable after only 16 years of insularization. The number of ant species observed at trap-line censuses on islands was significantly correlated with island size (r=0.608; P<0.05) and ant species diversity was generally low compared with similar mainland habitats. Mean species number for all islands, including landbridge islands, was 5.5±3.3 species, and on mainland sites was 7.9±2.85 species. Island effects were more marked on islands <20 ha, which had a mean of 3.3±2.5 species per island. Species number on islands was inversely related to densities of the aggressive Anoplolepis custodiens and A. steingroeveri. These two species were only patchily distributed on mainlands, but these ants were nearly ubiquitous on small islands. Several lines of evidence suggest that this single species domination may be responsible for island effects. Island sites also differed in the number of ant species in different trophic groupings, tending to have fewer granivorous species than the mainland sites, but species in other diet groups were similar in both island and mainland habitats. We conclude that there have been marked changes in the ant faunas on islands smaller than 20 ha apparently due to changes in abundance of the dominant ant species. Macrobenthos was studied in seven glacial bays situated along the Spitsbergen coast between 77 and 79°N. The fauna was dominated by deposit-feeding or carnivorous polychaetes and bivalves. Only 4 of 118 species identified in the collected material occurred in all the west Spitsbergen localities examined (the polychaetes Chaetozone/Tharyx sp., Cossura longocirrata, Lumbrinereis fragilis s.l. (sensu lato), and the bivalve Thyasira flexuosa). Clustering of samples showed a difference between the faunas of east and west Spitsbergen; the latter formed two subgroups, localities open to Atlantic waters and those from inner fjord basins. The fauna in open basins was dominated by cosmopolitan species, whereas arctic elements shares were higher in inner basins and predominated in the fauna in Bettybukta (east Spitsbergen). This indicates arctic, relict character of the inner fjords sites. The biomass ranged from 6 to 310 g/m2 and Shannon diversities from 0.49 to 2.54. Genetic endemism of island organisms and the threat to such organisms provided by artificially introduced genes are aspects of major interest in evolutionary and conservation studies of fishes. In this paper the genetic population structure of the oriental weatherloach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, in Sado Island of Japan was elucidated by phylogeographic analysis based on partial mitochondrial control region sequences. The specimens were sampled at 62 sites in Sado Island and 14 sites on the mainland close to the island. We found various haplotypes of different origins, most of which had already been reported from the mainland and other places of Japan. This suggests that the loach has been historically introduced to the island from various regions of Japan. Of the 62 sites on the island, cultured/nonnative individuals were confirmed to have been stocked at eight specific sites for feeding of re-introduced Japanese crested ibis (Nipponia nippon). By a Mantel test, geographical and genetic distances were not significantly correlated among the local populations in Sado Island. However a significant correlation was found when the eight stocked local populations were excluded from the analysis. This implied that the genetic distribution pattern of the loach on the island has been disturbed by the stocking. In addition, the nucleotide diversity values of stocked local populations were significantly higher than those of other local populations, also a likely outcome of the stocking. In conclusion, the loach on the island likely had their origins in multiple historical introductions and colonizations, where more recent stocking for the ibis has caused further genetic disturbance to their local populations.  相似文献

Estuarine and lagoonal surveys of Socotra Island and selected sites on the Hadhramout coast of Yemen were conducted with the objective of documenting and analysing fish diversity and assemblage structure. A total of 74 species in 35 families were recorded, among which 65 species in 32 families were from Socotra and 20 species in 17 families were from mainland Yemen. Twenty‐one species represent new faunal records for Socotra. Including historic records re‐examined in this study, the total fish species richness of estuaries and lagoons of Socotra Island reaches 76, which is relatively high compared to species inventories of well‐researched coastal estuaries in southern Africa. Five species dominate the occurrence and abundance frequencies: Terapon jarbua, Hyporhamphus sindensis, Aphanius dispar, Ambassis gymnocephala and Chelon macrolepis. Rarefaction and extrapolation analyses suggest that the actual number of fish species inhabiting some of those estuaries might be higher than the one observed. Thus, additional sampling at specific sites should be conducted to record other less conspicuous species. Ordination and multivariate analyses identified four main distinct assemblage clusters. Two groups are geographically well structured and represent northern Socotra and mainland Yemen, respectively. The other two assemblage groups tend to be determined to a greater extent by the synchrony between physical (e.g. estuary opening periods) and biological (e.g. spawning and recruitment periods) variables than by geographical location. Finally, the single intertidal lagoon of Socotra represents by itself a specific fish assemblage. The high proportion of economically important fish species (38) recorded underscores the paramount importance of these coastal water bodies as nursery sites, and for sustaining vital provisioning ecosystem services.  相似文献

Sequence divergence of mitochondrial COII was analyzed in 50 specimens belonging to five subspecies of Polyura eudamippus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) collected from southern China. There were nine haplotypes in the 405 bp of partial COII sequence. Distribution of the five subspecies was primarily consistent with the spatial distribution of haplotypes. The K st statistic showed genetic differentiation among these subspecies, except between the pair of P. e. kuangtungensis and P. e. formosana, which were separated by the Taiwan Strait. This is consistent with the 10,000-year history of the Taiwan Strait, not long enough for detectable differentiation. The present distribution pattern of COII haplotypes of P. eudamippus should be shaped by the alteration of Pleistocene glaciations, and Yunnan might be the refugium of P. eudamippus in the ice age, judging from the abundant haplotypes remaining. There were two routes for P. eudamippus in the postglacial expansion, one northward to Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hubei and another eastward to the southeastern coast of mainland China and Taiwan Island. Because the haplotype of butterflies on Hainan Island (P. e. whiteheadi) was completely different from that of mainland China, it was estimated that butterflies on Hainan Island might be from the Indo-China Peninsula rather than from mainland China.  相似文献

Predation by the red fox Vulpes vulpes is believed to be threatening the little penguin Eudyptula minor on Phillip Island in Victoria. Polymorphism at seven microsatellite loci was examined to estimate the extent of differentiation between Phillip Island and mainland populations of V. vulpes. Loss of alleles has occurred on Phillip Island where foxes first appeared = 88 years ago compared with mainland populations. Genetic differentiation between the Phillip Island and mainland populations was high. The relatively high differentiation found between the two populations could be due to either low migration rates, the effect of the composition of founder animals or both effects. Further ecological and historical information about the populations is needed to explore the likely significance of these effects.  相似文献

The life history of three populations ofProtohermes grandis and two populations ofProtohermes immaculatus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) was compared. In general, the larvae lived in stream riffles for 2 years and the adults appeared in summer. Adult body size differed between these closely related species and also between the populations ofP. grandis. Dwarfism occurred inP. immaculatus, a species that is endemic to the small, isolated island, Amami Island. The population ofP. grandis on Yaku Island, located between Amami Island and the mainland Kyushu, had an intermediate body size between that ofP. immaculatus and the mainland population ofP. grandis. Despite being an insular population,P. grandis on Tsushima Island had a similar body size to mainlandP. grandis. In these populations with large adults, some larvae lived in the streams for 3 years. The size distribution of benthic animals, which are the prey available toProtohermes larvae, differed between the streams studied. The density of large prey was lowest on Amami Island, intermediate on Yaku Island, and highest on the mainland and Tsushima Island. Different size distributions of available prey may be caused by the differences of benthic fauna; most of Ecdyonuridae and Ephemerellidae (large mayflies) and Perlidae (large stoneflies) were not found on Amami and Yaku Islands. Thus, there is a tendency to dwarfism in the populations ofProtobermes inhabiting streams where the density of large prey is low.  相似文献
